When Stacey Croft was admitted to West Coast General Hospital at 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day, she had no idea that in less than two hours she would give birth

to Port Alberni’s official New Year’s baby for 2015.

Jennifer Adena Douglas made her grand entrance at 4:36 a.m., a day before her due date and after a fast delivery.

She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces.

“I was surprised she was the New Year’s baby,” said Croft, adding that she knew there were a couple of women who came into the maternity ward after she did.

Jennifer is Croft’s third child—Croft has a son, Raymond, 6,

and daughter Amber, 3—and father Dale Douglas’ fifth.

British Columbia’s first baby, a boy, was born five seconds after midnight at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock.

Vancouver Island’s first baby, also a

boy, was born to a Ladysmith couple at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital at 1:10 a.m.

re you able to find some balance in life?

Like many people, the Christmas season is a time for overindulgence with holiday treats, social gatherings, less exercise and eating lots of baking and other goodies.

It’s a special time of year, and food is an important part of many celebrations and holiday traditions.

With the new year here, it’s also an annual time for resolutions for many.

Are you considering

any diet-related resolutions, such as ‘eating clean’ and trying to ‘detox’ your body to start new and fresh? This extremetype dieting is not necessary and may even be dangerous.

Dieting, fasting, using cleanses and ‘eating clean’ are various terms for restrictive diets that may do more harm than good.

Typically, cleanses or ‘detox diets’ involve a period of fasting, followed by a strict diet of raw vegetables, fruit and fruit juices, plus water.

In addition, some detox diets advocate using herbs and other supplements along

with colon cleansing (enemas) to empty the intestines.

The promoted ‘cleanses’ and ‘detox diets’ are a marketing myth rather than nutritional reality.

They sound like a perfect solution to starting fresh and clean with eating.

These diets seem like a great concept and it would be a quick fix if they truly delivered all that they promised. Yet, many of the claims made by detox diet promoters are exaggerated and not based on evidence. Plus, any benefit of weight loss is usually short-lived.

Some examples of detox dieting claims include; “ending unhealthy cravings, restoring a healthy metabolism, healing the digestive tract, and balancing your immune system”.

Promoters may liken the physical body to a computer operating system and suggest, starting the cleanse to ‘hit the reset button’.

Statements such as “Eat nothing but unprocessed, unrefined, sugarfree food, while also cutting out entire food groups, such as dairy and grains” are common themes with cleanses. These ideas seem like a great way to start a new eating pattern, but can be too extreme and backfire for good health.

The body has a welldeveloped system and mechanisms to detoxify and remove waste and toxins.

Waste products, such as alcohol, medications, products of digestion (fat, sugar and salt), dead cells, chemicals from pollution, additives, pesticides

and bacteria are all removed by the natural filtration organ systems of the liver, kidneys, lungs, intestines, and skin.

Fasting, or severely restricting what you eat limits intake of energy (calories) and important nutrients needed for health and wellness.

Rapid weight loss can occur, and this weight loss is largely water, glycogen (the body’s carbohydrate stores), and lean muscle rather than fat. You may feel tired, lightheaded, dizzy and experience low blood sugar and blood pressure. It’s very possible that you’ll have less energy while you are following an extreme detox program.

Long-term fasting

can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Colon cleansing, which is often recommended as part of a detox plan, can cause cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting and dehydration.

Also, with detox diet systems, colon cleansing is not a regulated medical procedure and due to its invasive nature, bowel perforations can be a real risk, along with questionable sterilization methods and pathogenic bacteria.

All or nothing thinking doesn’t work well with healthy living.

Get rid of the rules and dogma. Eating a well-balanced diet of variety and

moderation will help the body get rid of toxins through the normal functions of organs, such as kidneys, liver, intestines, skin and lungs.

If you live with diabetes, heart, lung, liver, intestinal or kidney disease, the ‘detox’ or cleanse diets can be harmful, since they restrict certain foods and nutrients. These cleanses could fast track the condition into a more critical and dangerous state.

If ‘eating clean’ to you means buying and consuming less chips, chocolate and candy, then it’s a good time to make a fresh start with shopping habits, but to swear off those goodies forever is not reasonable or

realistic. Black and white thinking when it comes to eating can do a lot of damage, since it can affect your relationship with food.

Yo yo dieters have seen the effects of rapid weight loss, then re-gaining back the pounds, plus more and more over the years. All foods can fit, as long as there’s some balance, variety and moderation.

Instead of jumping on the detox diet bandwagon, resolve to try to make Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely (SMART) goals that target a particular dietary pitfall.

A goal such as cutting back on double portions at dinner or reducing the mindless snacking while watching TV may help get the ball rolling to small steps in the right direction for better nutrition.

Using the SMART method will help improve daily habits with positive actions and results over time.

Ensure that some regular daily activity is part of your healthy living plan. This fitness will ensure your body works more efficiently to improve body functions for long-term health.

While detox diets may encourage some positive habits like eating more fruits, vegetables, and limiting overly processed foods, it’s best to enjoy a healthy, varied diet of moderation and active lifestyle rather than following a restrictive ‘cleansing’, fasting or ‘detox diet’.

Ken White was only 67 years old and had just retired in May. He was full of life and excited about the future.

He’d been diagnosed with skin cancer and a slow-growing leukemia not long ago—both of which he’d downplayed as nothing to be

concerned about. But this new discovery of a life-threatening tumor in his lower esophagus was alarming.

I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening in a haze. I tried to only think optimistically as he requested, but I found myself emotionally raw and physically drained, breaking down in tears several times over the next few days. After our

“We’re going to fight this aggressively, Kiddo,” my dad said, detailing the weekly chemotherapy and daily radiation treatments for the entire month of December. “Hopefully the tumor will decrease in size and the surgeon will be able to remove it in the new year.”

And from a lifetime of observing how he’s chosen to think, his cup isn’t just half full, it’s running over.

Dad’s jovial outlook has been an incredible blessing to our family. But the gift we cherish most is his unconditional love and support – something we adoringly give right back.

wo months ago my dad called and as soon as I heard the sound of his voice I knew something was wrong.

“Hi, Honey,” he said softly. “Do you have a couple of minutes?”

Instinctively my eyes welled up with tears and I could feel my throat constrict.

“Yes,” I said, bracing myself for the news he was about to deliver. His voice uncharacteristically cracked with emotion as he told me he had esophageal cancer.

Feeling the quick onset of a throbbing headache and a shortness of breath I failed to stop myself from crying out loud.

“I don’t want you to worry,” he said. “I’ll be going for tests and we’ll find out what can be done. I’ll keep you informed. Just think positive thoughts, okay? There’s nothing we can’t handle.”

After our conversation ended and I hung up the

My children, husband, brothers, sister-in-law, nephews, uncle, grandma and I arrived at Dad’s place on Boxing Day at 11 am at his request.

When we got to the door his wife said he was resting and summoned us into the living room.

We visited quietly for awhile until we were suddenly interrupted by a jolly good bellowing of “Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!”

...passed away peacefully at West Coast General Hospital in the arms of her loving family on Monday December 22. Joan, was predeceased by her parents Stella and Charles Gingell, and her brother Billie and sister Kathy. She is survived by her loving husband Brad, children: Mike, Laura and Jason (Tanya) as well as her grandchildren Crystal, Ryan, Natasha, Albert, Skyla, Noah, McKenna, Cody, and great grandchildren Jackie-Lynn and Jordyn. Her siblings, also survive Joan: Bobby, Mary, David, Joyce, Donald, Fred, Gordon, Betty and Phillip. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was born in Calgary Alberta, on February 22nd 1946 to Stella and Charles Gingell. She was one of 13 children. She went to school in Summerland; B.C. Joan was a waitress and then came to the Island in 1968. First living half way between Ucluelet and Tofino and then to the Valley in 1970. She met Brad in 1975 and they were married on Oct. 9, 1976 at St. Andrews United Church on Johnston Road.

Together they raised three children, Mike, Laura and Jason.

Joan worked for Dr. Burnett’s wife Edna and then went to work for Port Fish in 2009 for a few months, and did this while Brad was fighting cancer. Joan was a member of the Mid Island Kidney Association.

Joan opened Ecuador and More four years ago and loved having her own business, treating customers as friends. The business originally started in her home then moved to Argyle Street and then next to the Blue Door CafĂŠ where it is now.

Joan was a generous and caring lady who helped out anyone who needed it. She was a stay at home mom while the children were little and was a great cook and also loved to bake. Joan crocheted afghans and doilies and she loved to read and go camping. Gardening was also one of her great loves.

Joan will be remembered as a woman with a huge heart who put her family first.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Saturday January 10th from 1 to 4 p.m. at her home on 7059 Beaver Creek Road.

In lieu of flowers a donation to the Mid-Island Kidney Association would be appreciated.

We visited places that lack access to clean water in a country that boasts having an abundance of the cleanest water in the world. We met people trying to protect their communities, wildlife and habitat from fossil fuel development and pipeline projects. We joined more than 1,000 people in Toronto for a celebration of local food, music and nature during the Homegrown Park Crawl. We took part in nature-themed scavenger hunts with schoolchildren.

It was a lot of work that included many serious discussions, but it was also inspiring and fun.

We’ve been asking people to advocate in their communities for recognition of the right to clean air, water and food by all levels of government — and, ultimately, in the Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Local-level organizing has already been incredibly successful. Municipal declarations of the right to a healthy environment have now been adopted

by Richmond and Vancouver, B.C., The Pas, Manitoba, Montreal (preceded by its borough of Rosemont-La PetitePatrie), Quebec, and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories — all thanks to citizens of those communities working together. More than 11,000 volunteers have signed up and similar efforts are now underway in 30 communities.

More than half the world’s nations, about 110, have constitutional rights to a healthy

environment. It’s time for Canada to join them. Research shows the benefits go beyond protecting the environment and human health to strengthening the economy by stimulating innovation, diversification and competitiveness, and reducing healthcare costs. It’s not about slowing progress or stopping development; it’s about ensuring those occur in the best ways possible, reducing environmental degradation and ensuring that the longterm needs of citizens are prioritized over short-term corporate profits and political ambitions.

The tour may be over, but the movement is just getting started.
