Six charged in Anahim Lake homicides Six people have been charged in connection with a double homicide in Anahim Lake that claimed the lives of 23-year-old Matthew Hennigar and 22-yearold Kalvin Andy on Boxing Day. “I’ve known the two young victims since they were in diapers,” Ulkatcho (Anahim Lake) Chief Zach Parker said Tuesday.

“There’s no script in leadership or any handbook that prepares you for such tragic events.”

Just before midnight on Friday, Dec. 26, the RCMP received a report of shots fired at a home in the 2100 block on Dorsey Road in Anahim Lake. When police arrived at the scene, Hennigar and Andy were already deceased.

Provincial Crown Counsel has approved a charge of first degree murder against Everett O’Reilly, 27, second degree murder against Christian Craciun, 28, Andrew Jongbloets, 25, and Serena Rhem, 26, and manslaughter against Lucille Mack, 33, and Stephen Mecham, 22.

lic to share any information that will help the major crime unit determine a time line for O’Reilly, Jongbloets, Rhem and Craciun from the time of the offence Friday evening until their arrests on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m.

Speaking of resolutions, here are seven goals for a healthy life: sleep 7-8 hours per night; eat breakfast every day; don’t smoke; use alcohol moderately (or not at all); don’t eat between meals; maintain proper weight; and exercise regularly. Perhaps you can include these gems in your resolutions as well.

And here’s an idea for losing weight: Canadians consume an average of 26 teaspoonful of sugar per day. If you cut that amount in half, you’ll lose 16 pounds in one year.

Combine this with exercise, you’ll lose even more.

Gentles trial underway in Supreme Court

The Martin William Michael Gentles, 30, trial began in Williams Lake Monday, Nov. 24. At the beginning of the trial Gentles pleaded not guilty to all charges against him related to an incident where TRU nursing students Rayel MacDonald and Alysha Mullett were struck

by a truck driven by Gentles while walking across Carson Drive on April 22, 2012.

MacDonald was killed and Mullett suffered serious bodily harm.

Justice John D. Truscott will deliver his verdict some time in 2015.

A sign of hope There may be hope for the world yet. Or at least for B.C. A recent poll by Insights West shows that the most important thing for people through the holiday season is not the shopping, the tree, getting gifts or any of the usual trappings of the season.

No, according to the poll, people regard time with friends and family as the most positive aspect of the holiday season.

That goes for Albertans too, though slightly less so (85 per cent) than for the warm-hearted B.C.’ers (87 per cent).

And that is something pretty nice to hear, what with all of the bad news we hear from around the world, commercialism at this time of year and arguments over whether or not it’s Christmas or the holiday season.

The spirit of giving is alive and well, too, according to the poll. Buying gifts for friends and family, not receiving them, took second place on the list with 84 per cent of the respondents checking it off as an important part of the season.

One area that could use some more work, however, is helping the less fortunate. Only about 60 per cent of the people responding, in both B.C. and Alberta, marked that as an important part of the season. Still, 60 per cent isn’t bad either.

Don’t get us wrong. Bad news isn’t going to stop happening just because we want to feel good for a couple of weeks, and the money spent at this time of year is important — there are many small businesses that rely on the Christmas season for nearly half of their yearly sales. That’s a lot of people employed, and that’s a good thing too.

It would be a mistake to think that a few weeks of good feelings, gestures of generosity and thankfulness around Dec. 25 and into the New Year is the solution to making the world a better place. But hearing that most people value friends and family above everything else is a sign of hope.

A few simple substitutions for New Year’s resolutions It’s a tough call, avoiding the word ‘resolution’ at this time of year — or any year!

I hate old lists of guilt-producing qualities – all of which I could become, if only … !

We will not be the same persons at the end of 2015 as we are today. To quote Charles F. Kettering: “Every time you tear a leaf off a calendar, you present a new place for new ideas and progress.”

Nic Vardalos expressed both our hopes and our frustration when he said, “My New Year’s Resolution List usually starts with the desire to lose between ten and three thousand pounds.”

So, in place of the ‘R’ word, perhaps I will cautiously offer approaches that might last longer than a month, day, week, or

hour. Alternates that might be titled New Year’s Substitutions.

1.) Progress not Perfection: Most of my past goals have been of the ‘do’ or ‘don’t do’ variety.

A set-up for instant failure — and fail I did. Directional approaches are now my favourites — and those in my home circle

love them, too. Doing better is more within reach than doing it right. And far more likely to reap results.

2.) The Inside tops Outside: A new look for 2015? New style?

Or new character. If I improve my core integrity, all the exteriors will take their proper place, if they are seen at all.

3.) Balance over Achievement: Rather than committing to two hours on the treadmill at 3 a.m., could I take a brief look at where I’m out-of-balance? Where is my weakest area?

Physical health, mental attitude, social relationships, spiritual investment? That might tell me where to start. But please don’t tell me about food-freaks unless they exercise, or spiritual devotees who couldn’t care less about

others. More out-of-balance is not what I need.

If I’m short on the physical, perhaps I might gradually introduce a new longevity habit, like eating more ‘fresh.’

If my Mental Habits are weak, could I consider reducing my negative comments? Social?

Who doesn’t know someone who needs a friend! And the Spiritual category waits for me to develop a relationship instead of another list of behaviours.

4.) Above all, Keep Pedalling: Continuing to pedal is the only way I know to outpace what bugs me about myself, avoid becoming a victim, and change my scenery permanently. G.K. Chesterton expounds that the object of a New Year is “not that we should have a new year,

but rather that we should have a new soul.”

Akhenaton offered, “He who gave thee a Soul, armed thee with resolution. Employ it, and thou art wise; be wise and thou art happy.”

Simply, resolution is determination. Perhaps then I can eventually become the person I wish those irritating others to be.

Of course, that still sounds like a list, so I will just let Charles Lamb close with the thought that “New Year’s Day is every man’s birthday.”

itamin C is arguably the single most important water soluble antioxidant in the human body. Antioxidants play a key role in protecting cells against free radicals, which can cause damage and play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

It’s tragic that researchers are unaware that high doses of vitamin C and lysine cannot only prevent, but reverse atherosclerosis in coronary and other arteries in the body. Vitamin C is needed for the manufacture of collagen, the glue that holds cells together. A lack of vitamin C means poor collagen, resulting in cracks appearing between coronary cells thus setting the stage for fatal blood clot.

Recently, Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, made this monumental discovery. He took photos of the retinal arteries and then gave patients 6,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 5,000 of lysine (lysine adds strength to coronary arteries just like steel rods increase the strength of concrete). A year later he repeated the pictures. To his surprise, he found atherosclerosis fading away.

Millions of North Americans also suffer from osteoarthritis. Without sufficient vitamin C to produce collagen, a major component of cartilage, bone eventually grinds on bone. There would be fewer joint replacements if more vitamin C were available to produce healthy collagen.

Rheumatoid arthritis, the inflammatory type, also requires large doses of vitamin C. Every moment of the day our bodies are using oxygen to keep us alive. But oxidation results in metabolic ash, known as “free radicals”, which are believed to trigger an inflammatory reaction in joints.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce damaging free-radicals.

Patients often appear surprised when I tell them that vitamin C will help them keep their teeth a lifetime. By age 65 one in five North Americans has lost all their teeth and many of their teeth were normal. Rather, it was the gums that could no longer hold teeth firmly in place in part due to inadequate amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin is needed in large amounts to produce healthy collagen, the glue that holds cells together and keeps gums healthy. Without good mortar bricks fall apart and the same happens when gums lacking collagen lose their grip on teeth.

The essential amino acid lysine is probably best known for its use in those with herpes simplex infections but several other benefits have been ascribed to the molecule, including favourable effects on blood pressure and stroke prevention but also a positive influence on mood and anxiety.

The 4-H Club celebrated 100 years in B.C. this year so the 56th annual 4-H Show and Sale was a little extra special with approximately 170 4-H members in the Williams Lake District participating from Big Lake, Horsefly, Rose Lake/Miocene, Springhouse, Chimney Valley, Canim Valley, Lone Butte, and Clinton.

Aug. 13, 2014 Rivershed team visits Xat’sull Heritage Village

Xat’sull Heritage Village hosted a cultural event in August which included greeting the Rivershed Society team travelling the length of the Fraser River to raise awareness on environmental protection.

About 80 participants took part in traditional cultural activities. Orden Mack of Williams Lake was one of five young sustainability leaders from around B.C. participating in this summer’s raft adventure down the Fraser River.

Aug. 27, 2014 Unusual Ice bucket challenge

Vona Priest and her friends held an unusual ice bucket ALS fundraising challenge Friday, Aug. 22 using a tractor bucket to dump ice water and $1,000 in toonies on their heads to raise awareness about ALS and funds to fight the disease and help those suffering with the disease.

The 39th annual Horsefly Fall Fair last weekend was well represented with competitors and a vast array of produce, art, floral arrangements, canning and baking entrees, photography, and livestock.

The Williams Lake Harvest Fair in the Stampede Grounds was another huge success featuring 447 entries and a record year for children’s entries.

The BeeLieve it or Not theme celebrated bees, the little creatures who make it possible for everything to grow.

In addition to plant and animal exhibits, hand crafts, photography, music, food, trade fair and more the event included the Little Britches Rodeo, Ranch Rodeo, and a gymkhana.

Nov. 4, 2014 Glen Arbor turns 10

Glen Arbor celebrated its 10th anniversary with a large cake featuring a photograph of the residence on Monday, Oct. 27.

Several of the original residents along with new residents were on hand to share photo albums and conversation and review some of the photo albums on display.

Now, for some years I spent time in a culture where direct answers were seldom given, not even to direct questions. I had trouble with lifting the plow blade last spring and thought the battery must be worn out.

And the blade would not lift, nothing worked. I charged it up and it started but by the time I was finished plowing, the blade would only lift up very slowly, with an awful grinding noise. I wondered why this new battery was finished already but then,

Stampede Rugby celebrates 34 years

Talent, skill execution and camaraderie were all on display at the Ottoman Drive Rugby Fields as the 34th Annual Stampede Rugby Tournament took centre stage.

Both the Williams Lake Rustlers and the Williams Lake Hustlers reached the final in their respective divisions, however, some tough competition from throughout B.C. and Alberta made it a challenge to perservere.

On the men’s side Williams Lake got past the Meralomas of Vancouver and Capilano to reach the final, before falling to a team littered with players from the Canadian Men’s Team.

The Hustlers, after winning the Stampede Rugby Tournament for the past three years, fell to Abbotsford in the ladies’ final.

Lakecity soccer teams dominate CYSL windup

The Cariboo Youth Soccer League wound up its regular season at the Esler Sports Complex hosting teams from 100 Mile House, Prince George and Quesnel.

On the under-14 boys’ side Williams Lake beat Quesnel, 2-1, before beating Prince George 3-0 in the final.

Winners in the other divisions included Williams Lake’s under-16 boys, under-16 girls, and under-12 girls.

Williams Lake Blue Fins close out season with ‘AAA’ provincials

The Williams Lake Blue Fins finished the season with a strong showing at the B.C. ‘AAA’ Provincial Swimming Championships.

The six members were part of the biggest team Williams Lake had sent in many years — Coral Choi, Madison Blusson, Kara Zavitz, Gracie Frost, Ashley Beauchamp and Leif Brandson were all in attendance.

Beauchamp and Choi swam their way into the ‘B’ finals to be recognized as some of the top swimmers in the province. Choi managed to swim the 100-metre breaststroke in a Blue Fins’ club-record time to earn a spot in the ‘A’ final and to become top eight in the province.

Rugby tour ignites fire within youth program

A whirlwind rugby tour of Williams Lake wrapped up mid-July for 44 English high school players.

Merchants Taylor’s School, located in Crosby, England — just north of Liverpool — visited for a pair of friendlies with members of the Lake City Falcons and the Williams Lake Junior Rustlers. They also had an opportunity to learn about the community during their four-day stay.

The under-14 pee wee rep fastball team went from zeroes to heroes at the Provincial ‘A’ Fastball Championship at Royal Kwantlen Park in Surrey in July.

Windsor wins ladies soccer title

The Williams Lake Ladies Soccer League final featured a battle between the top two teams in the regular season.

The league-champion under-17 rep team took on runners up Windsor Plywood for the playoff championship at the Esler Sports Complex.

Windsor were the better team on the day as they raced out to an early lead and never looked back to win, 6-1.

Striker Vanessa Hansen scored four times for Windsor, while Katie McMahen and Ashley Callander added singles.

Davies off to lacrosse nationals

Williams Lake’s Elizabeth Davies became the first lacrosse player from the north to ever make Team BC. She represented the province at the 2014 Female Junior National Championships in Whitby, Ont., from Aug. 6-9.

Davies, a Grade 11 student at Lake City Secondary at the time, hopes to one day earn a lacrosse scholarship to a major university.

An unprecedented six Williams lake rugby players have cracked roster spots on BC provincial rugby teams.

Carleigh Walters and twins Laura and Emma Pfleiderer were all selected to the under-16 girls team, Sheridan Davis and Tasha Johnson made the under-18 girls team and Jaye Richards qualified to the under-16 boys side.

All represented B.C. at the Rugby Canada National Championship Festival from Aug. 4-10 at Calgary Rugby Park.

Cross Country Ski Club Family Fun Day Skiers have been busy doing a snow dance for the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club’s upcoming free Family Fun Day at Bull Mountain on Sunday, Jan. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“Skiers of all abilities are invited to try free cross country ski lessons with volunteer ski instructors from our club,” said Family Fun Day organizer Betty Donahue. “This is your chance to learn how to stride and glide safely and get up and down those hills.”

Stampeders host Tomahawks The Williams Lake Stampeders continue the Central Interior Hockey League season hosting the Lac La Hache Tomahawks at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

So far in the 2014/15 campaign the Stampeders have amassed a 13-win, one-loss record and sit six points ahead of the secondplace Smithers Steelheads for first in the league.

Three lakecity mountain bikers were at or near the top of their classes following the sixrace 2014 Downhill BC Cup series.

Mason Seaward, 14, Britany Methot, 20, and Cory Brunelle, 25, competed.

Seaward finished third overall in the under-15 men’s division. Methot, meanwhile, competing in two of the six series races, finished first in the 19 to 29 citizen women’s class during the final race weekend in Fernie.

Brunelle, after a year off racing, placed 10th in the men’s elite class.

This year’s 22nd annual Tour De Cariboo raised more than $60,000 for the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In total, 73 riders participated.

Williams Lake water skier Parnell Pinette competed Oct. 8-10 at the World 35-Plus Water Ski Championships as a member of Team Canada.

The event featured roughly 320 competitors from more than 30 countries spanning from the around the globe.

Pinette jumped to a 10th-place overall finish in the water-ski jumping portion of the event, and helped Canada to a third-place overall finish.

Flinton will make her international hockey debut for Team Canada this February in Granada, Spain at the 27th biennial 2015 Universiade.

The 21-year-old University of Saskatchewan Huskies’ defenceman was named to the team

by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) late October as one of 20 university players in the country.

Williams Lake’s Kayla Moleschi and Team Canada’s Women’s Sevens rugby squad will take their first steps in qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Moleschi, 24, was named to the 12-player roster in November as the team prepared for the Women’s Sevens World series. The top four teams at the end of the tournament automatically qualify for the Olympics.

Dave always did things short and sweet. So in following his wishes, Dave wanted to say “Goodbye” to everyone that knew him, as he goes riding the skies.

Dave leaves behind loved ones, family and many friends. He has gone to join family and friends that departed before him.

His final days were spent with his family by his side at the Laurel Place Hospice in Surrey, BC. Tom and his family lived in Williams Lake for more than 30 years and during that time he served as an alderman and mayor on city council. Tom will be sadly missed by his wife, his three children, his three grandchildren and his one great-grandchild.

His was a life lived to the fullest.

A memorial service for William Edward “Billy” Petteplace Jr. will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11:00am at Compassionate Care Funerals located at 180 Comer Street in Williams Lake, B.C. Billy passed away very suddenly on December 9, 2014 at his home, he was 55 Years old.

Billy was born in Vancouver, BC, on August 19, 1959 to Bill and Betty Petteplace. At an early age he moved with his parents to Tujunga, California. He lived in Tujunga most of his life but moved to Williams Lake, B.C. in December 2007.

He had a kind heart, was very creative and a lover of animals. A welder by trade and a mechanic as well, Billy was able to fix or build almost anything. His most recent project was an impressive looking high handlebar bicycle. He also played the guitar and enjoyed rock and roll music.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Betty.

He will be remembered and missed by his daughter Frankie Lee and granddaughter Joselyn of Sacramento, California.

Five siblings also in California, Joanne, Tammy, Jimmy, Tracey, Chris and their family members. His family in Williams Lake, Linda, Jeannie, Brian, Gail and their families and especially those at Jubilee Place where he lived the past 8 months.

Thank you to all who shared a part of this man’s life.

He was loved by many and will be missed by many more.
