The Trail Historical Society has kindly offered photos and stories related to the history of Trail.

One fond Christmas tradition is remembered regularly by long-time Trail residents and smelter employees this time of year: the annual Cominco Christmas turkey. The following text is from the December 1941 edition of the Cominco Magazine and makes for a nostalgic read. ***** We’re talking turkey! Such is the theme song of the turkey people. The turkey people, in case you aren’t aware, are the boys and girls who do such a splendiferous job of seeing that every Consolidated family, pensioner, widow and enlisted man’s wife is provided with a succulent, Grade A, No. 1 gobbler for Christmas dinner.

To say that the job is no cinch is to stay on the right side of the King’s English. In the best Hollywood jargon – it’s terrific! During the last two weeks of their tribulations, the air in the vicinity of these turkey people is specially piped to the stratosphere and – yes, you’ve guessed it – it keeps the sky blue for the rest of the year!

The grief starts with the sorting of married men and single-men-withdependents from the single men; it continues through the additions of new men, keeping track of transfers, securing addresses of pensioners, widows, and enlisted men’s wives living in every part of Canada, determining the number of turkeys to be ordered, how many of which weight, and worrying about weather conditions and getting two or three carloads of turkeys here in first-class shape at the latest possible moment.

It’s a lot of work and the staff have their reward when they go home on Christmas Eve to dream of all the people who rest content with a nice fat bird stuffed into the refrigerator – or to toss and turn restlessly at the nightmare of having missed one deserving person from the list.

Another common nightmare is the illusion of being confronted with a bill for $20,000 (approx. $387,000 today!) for that 60,000 pound pile of turkey meat! That is approximately the price and size of order which went out for last year’s birds.

The number of turkeys and the size of the job have increased four-fold since the first year the turkeys were given by the Company, but it is doubtful whether any more headaches are generated.

Old-timers will recall the issuing of turkeys from the Company store when that venerable institution was housed in what is now known as the Doukhobor Block. The store moved to its present site in 1925 and the turkey gift was an established custom even at that time.

the turkeys to each house, but as Trail homes in those days were without numbers or other means of identifications the plan was dropped and the practice established of issuing cards and having employees call for their birds.

Of late years the Trail rink has been used as a storage and distribution spot for Trail employees and the Rossland Courthouse for Rossland employees.

These same arrangements have been made for this year and the gobblers will be distributed during the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on December 22 and 23.

ted according to the size of the family or the number of dependents.

It is conceivable, even with the great amount of care that is taken, that some person rightfully entitled to receive a turkey may be missed. Police continue to investigate murder Six-month-old death of Tom Feeney remains unsolved

By Times Staff Six months after the home invasion and murder of Rossland resident Tom Feeney, police are still trying to find those responsible.

Police and investigators requested the public's help in identifying those involved in the crime, and are asking, once again, for any information.

“Investigators have been following a number of tips,” said a press release, providing updates on the investigation. “(They) are still looking for more help in identifying the person or persons responsible for his death.”

Police received the initial call about the 75-year-old's death on June 5, around 11 a.m. The call came in reporting a body at a residence on Feeney Road in Rossland.

After arriving at the scene, police identified the body as the homeowner, Feeney.

“The preliminary findings suggested that this was a random incident, or a crime of opportunity that resulted in the tragic death of Tom Feeney,” said the updated press

release. ”The BC RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit was called in to assist with the investigation.”

As well as finding Feeney's body, police discovered there were several things were stolen from the home, and they are still looking for any information regarding the location of those items.

The stolen goods include a 40-inch Emerson LCD TV, five firearms including an 1874 Pedersoli/ Cimarron Arms rifle with an octagon shaped barrel and .45 calibre Lyman, Schmitzer long range high performenace rounds.

Since the investigation began, police have determined there were more items missing than originally thought.

A Barnett crossbow with a broken string, a 30/30 lever action rifle, a double barrel break action shot gun and a clay pigeon thrower were added to the list of stolen items to keep an eye out for.

Investigators are asking anyone with any information about the murder or the location of the stolen items to call the tip line dedicated to the investigation at 1-877-987-8477, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Pastor dismayed by theft

Nelson pastor Jim Reimer is heartbroken that thieves have stolen approximately 500 meals’ worth of cash from SHARE Nelson.

The Lakeside recycled furniture and houseware business is run entirely on donations, with revenue going to Nelson’s soup kitchen Our Daily Bread.

“Somebody broke into the store and stole our safe,” said Reimer.

Though it hasn’t been determined how the thieves got in, and there were no signs of forcible entry, Reimer believes the crime occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday morning.

There are no suspects and no positive leads. The thieves seem to have left the rest of the store alone, making away only with the safe and its contents.

Inside were the keys to the store’s truck, as well as the spare keys.

“Now we have to change all the

locks and get people to make new keys for our delivery truck. That will cost us $1,000, plus the replacement of the safe,” he said.

But he’s most upset about the donation fund that was stolen.

“Staff at the store have been raising money on their own time.

Every day we make a night deposit from our sales. The money being collected in the safe they had raised through bottle collection and hot dog sales,” he said.

“They wanted to make the presentation to Our Daily Bread. That money was in there.”

The employees had raised $2,500 dollars, which would have translated to “about 500 meals” at Our Daily Bread.

And though they’ve experienced minor thefts before, Reimer said he was shocked at the scale of this one.

“Nothing like this has happened before. We had a change jar taken before. We’re going to make changes on the security system,” he said.

Brent Iachetta from the City of Trail started his Tuesday shift by setting up sites where Christmas trees can be dropped of this year. The city and the J.L. Crowe Secondary School grad class will be picking up trees from homes throughout Trail and the designated points on Saturday Jan. 17 and Sunday Jan. 18. Trees can also be disposed of for free at the McKelvey Creek Landfill. All decorations and any type of plastic covers need to be removed from the trees before drop off.

Early days of newspaper offered colourful commentary

FROM PAGE 1 Local stories are key to staying connected to our readers, so we hope that sharing personal memories will spotlight how a local newspaper can deeply affect the community that surrounds it.

Also in the works, is a once a month Trail Times feature that will highlight an outstanding event or moment in each decade from 1895 until present.

While in today’s world we strive to convey stories both accurate and interesting, they don’t really compare to the colourful front page articles from the Trail Creek News.

Thompson recounts in detail, the daily goings-on of a dusty remote town that wasn’t incorporated as a city until six years later.

In the first edition, he explains a brave deed by Chief Engineer Sproat of the steamer Lytton, who encumbered by clothes and extra heavy shoes sprang into the chilly waters of the swift Columbia and brought a nearly drowned man, Redney Robinson, to shore.

Then two columns to the right, Thompson writes “He Lies On the Mountain Side, Near Trail,” in a separate rendition about the subsequent burial of Mr. Robinson, who succumbed to acute congestion of the lungs. Thompson writes, he was “taken to a beautiful place on the high plateau about half a mile above the town and there consigned to the friendly bosom of Mother Earth.”

Another cheeky headline titled “A Bull in a China Closet,” tells of Topping & Hanna’s bull, that after a long picnic during the summer was nearing its end due to ‘midnight depredations. ‘ The story is a play-by-play according to ‘a certain cook in a certain hotel in Trail,’ who was awakened by a noise in the kitchen. “Then ensued the usual proceedings that follow the entry of a bull in a china shop, until the cook succeeded in driving the bovine out of doors,” he added.

Unfortunately the 120-year document, which is said to be written on wrapping paper borrowed from a neighbourhood grocery store, is in tatters, so the ending must be left to the current reader’s imagination.

In the Historical Portraits of Trail, provided by Sarah Benson from the Trail Museum and Archives, Thompson sold the business to W.K. Esling and W.E. Blackner in 1897, who sold the paper to Mr Elmer Hall, who later formed Hall Printing, in 1919.

The Trail Creek News became the Trail Daily Times in 1928 and continued to run the presses on Cedar Avenue until the 1980s.

Black Press purchased the daily newspaper in 2010, and through an advanced computer system print the now four-daya-week Trail Times publication in Penticton.

Hundreds take the political plunge despite cynicism THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - How many people would fight tooth and nail to get into a profession almost guaranteed to earn them a reputation as self-serving liars and cheats, if not outright crooks?

Lots, it turns out.

Hundreds of Canadians are fighting for the opportunity to dive into what the majority of their fellow citizens appear to consider a cess pool: politics.

Many are giving up successful careers to carry the flags of their preferred political parties in 338 ridings across the country in next year’s federal election. Some fought long, hard nomination battles for the right to have their names on the ballot; hundreds more are still in the process of nomination contests.

And that’s the easy part. Once nominated, they’ll spend the next 10 months fending off attacks from their political rivals and slogging door to door in their ridings, where they’ll have to defend their choice of party and profession to cynical voters.

Do they need their heads examined?

Good question, laughs Jane Philpott, a family doctor who is running for the Liberals in the

Toronto-area riding of Markham-Stouffville.

Polls suggest “family doctors are usually almost at the very top” of the most respected professions in Canada, she notes.

So, “to go from that to being a politician as the least respected might make one think I’m crazy.”

A recent poll by The Gandalf Group for Ryerson University suggests only 13 per cent of Canadians trusted politicians to behave ethically, slightly ahead of lobbyists. By contrast, 78 per cent deemed doctors to be trustworthy.

The online survey of 1039 people painted a grim picture of how Canadians view politicians: self-serving individuals in politics for personal gain, who use taxpayers’ money to help their friends and who routinely lie, break promises and cheat on their expense claims.

Almost 30 per cent of respondents said politicians frequently take bribes. And 63 per cent felt politics corrupts honest people.

of error as they are not a random sample and therefore are not necessarily representative of the whole population.

Far from dissuading good people from running, cynicism about politics seems to be a motivating factor for some of the freshlyminted candidates interviewed recently

by The Canadian Press.

“It’s quite frankly part of the reason why I decided to go into politics,” says Rachel Bendayan, a 34-yearold lawyer running for the Liberals in Montreal’s Outremont, where she’s taking on the daunting task of trying to defeat NDP Leader Tom Mulcair.

“I would like to change that. I think we need to rebuild our confidence in our representatives at all levels of government. I think we need to give back some of the respect, esteem,

importance to public service.”

Erin Weir, a labour economist running for the NDP in Regina-Lewvan, says “the onus is really on those of us who are seeking elected office to change that (cynical) perception and to demonstrate that these democratic institutions can actually serve good purposes.”

While Canadians profess cynicism and suspicion about politicians generally, some candidates have found they don’t seem to see individual politicians in the same light.

“Once I meet them face to face, they’re quite supportive. It’s quite encouraging,” says Tim Laidler, a 29-year-old military veteran running for the Conservatives in British Columbia’s Port MoodyCoquitlam.

As a social studies teacher, Janis Irwin,

who is running for the NDP in the newlycreated EdmontonGriesbach riding, says it’s “a dagger through the heart” when constituents tell her they can’t be bothered to vote because all politicians are the same.

But like Laidler, she’s finding she can “counter that, at least at the local level, by proving that I am there for the right reasons.”

The reasons candidates offer for taking the plunge into politics would likely strike even the most cynical voters as “the right reasons:” giving back to the community, pursuing particular policy objectives, making life better for Canadians, making their city or town’s voice heard at the national level.

At 60, Richard Cannings is at an age when most are thinking about retirement or, at least, slowing down. But the biologist, ecologist and bird expert is running for the NDP in B.C.’s South Okanagan-West Kootenay because he’s worried about the environment and what he sees as the Harper government’s muzzling of federal scien-

tists.

“I would really like to play a role in turning that around,” he says.

Arif Virani, a 43-year-old lawyer, former United Nations war crimes prosecutor and human rights activist, arrived in Canada as an infant refugee when his parents fled the brutal regime of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

He’s running for the Liberals in Toronto’s Parkdale-High Park in part because he wants to “give back to the country” that took his family in.

For Laidler, his military experience in wartorn, poverty-stricken Afghanistan convinced him that economic prosperity is crucial to a country’s success. He chose to run for the Conservatives because of their economic track record and what he saw as their traditional support for the military.

Harjit Singh Sajjan was similarly motivated to run by his military experience, albeit for the Liberals in Vancouver South. He’s a former Vancouver cop who worked in the organized crime and gangs unit, a

much-decorated military veteran and first Canadian Sikh to command a regiment.

One of his medals was awarded for his work reducing the influence of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

That experience, combined with his police work, convinced him of the need to figure out the root causes of crime and extremism so that a focus can be put on prevention, particularly among kids.

It also persuaded him that Stephen Harper’s aversion to “committing sociology,” as the prime minister has dismissively referred to interest in root causes, is “not only simplistic nonsense, it’s dangerous.”

Whether or not one agrees with their views, it’s hard to deny the strong strain of idealism running through the 2015 crop of candidates.

“I think the drivers that made me want to be a family doctor are the same drivers that made me want to be a politician,” says the Liberals’ Philpott.

“You know, it’s about helping improve people’s lives.”

Kai Madsen of the Christmas Cheer Board says the Fontaines are simply giving back and trying to make life for the organizations a little easier, so they can continue to do good work for others.

“They make a point of distributing much of what they have to many agencies to make sure we’re all doing well, and that’s a blessing,” said Siloam Mission director Judy Richichi.

“It’s phenomenal, it’s fantastic,” said Chiapetta. “It’s just a great moment for us.”

Painting a picture of 2014 through pop culture THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Just for fun, let’s try to picture the year in pop culture, all in one image.

We might begin with a singer oddly named Adele Dazeem, belting “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen.”

Suddenly a friend would pour a bucket of ice water over her head. Adele would immediately tweet the moment on her new iPhone 6, hashtag #icebucketchallenge, while Ellen would pop out and take a group selfie that would #BreaktheInternet.

Now let’s get more serious. It’s always a challenge to capture a year in pop culture, but we try nonetheless.

Herewith, our annual, highly selective trip down memory lane: JANUARY: P H A R R E L L WILLIAMS has lots of reason to be happy this month. After a huge 2013, the producerrapper-singer gets an Oscar nomination for “Happy” on the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack. A week later, he wins four Grammys, including album and record of the year for producing the funk-electronic anthem “Get Lucky.”

Happy, Lucky ... the guy certainly picks apt song titles.

FEBRUARY: The ground shifts in the late-night TV landscape: JIMMY FALLON takes over for JAY LENO and immediately establishes himself as the new king, with a younger, fresher vibe perfect for nextday YouTube viewing of bits like celebrity lip-syncing duels.

Kicking off an eventful year in the tech world, FACEBOOK pays a massive $19 billion for WHATSAPP, the popular mobile messaging service favoured by teenagers and young adults - who see Facebook as something better suited to their parents. At New York Fashion Week, emerging star LUPITA N’YONGO makes a front-row splash at Calvin Klein.

MARCH: It’s OSCAR time, and this year’s show - the most-watched in a decade - gives us a slew of pop culture moments. Introducing

IDINA MENZEL, JOHN TRAVOLTA mangles her name in epic fashion, creating a new star: “the one and only ADELE DAZEEM.” Ever the Broadway trouper, Menzel doesn’t miss a beat as she sings the girl-power anthem “Let It Go.” N’YONGO completes her rapid ascent to superstardom with a supporting-actress trophy for “12 Years a Slave,” also the year’s best picture. And speaking of superstars, ELLEN DEGENERES takes that famous selfie with a gaggle of ‘em, causing Twitter to crash for 20 minutes and beating the previous champion for retweets, a photo of BARACK and MICHELLE OBAMA. Time for a new phrase in Hollywoodspeak: “CONSCIOUS UNCOUPLING,” the term used by GWYNETH PALTROW to describe her enlightened split from CHRIS MARTIN. Oh, and OBAMA pitches his health plan to young people via an unusual platform: Zach Galifianakis’ comic Web series “Between Two Ferns.” Some conservative commentators call it undignified.

APRIL: Yet more epic shifts in late-night: DAVID LETTERMAN announces he’ll retire in 2015.

His replacement is Comedy Central star STEPHEN COLBERT, adored by the younger demographic.

LETTERMAN quips: “I happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.” And now, we know you were getting antsy for KIMYE news, so here it is: KIM KARDASHIAN and soon-to-be hubby KANYE WEST make the prestigious cover of VOGUE, sparking existential angst among some fashionistas.

Kardashian tweets that it’s “a dream come true!!!”

MAY: But the real dream comes when KIMYE ties the knot at a Renaissance fortress in Florence, Italy, following lavish prewedding festivities in France. ANGELINA JOLIE makes a splash as “Maleficent,” giving us a new take on the Disney character that’s now more superheroine than villainess.

Also making a splash: LAVERNE COX, the openly transgender actress on “Orange is the New Black,” featured on the cover of Time magazine.

JUNE: Let’s turn to sports: It’s WORLD CUP time, and who says America doesn’t love soccer? People are glued to their TVs, iPads, phones and other devices for the U.S. games, and a hero is born: TIM HOWARD, the U.S. goalie, who even in a 2-1 defeat to Belgium makes a record-setting 16 saves.

Turns out his fashion choices - lots of blues, and bib overalls - prove as influential as his mom’s. COX, meanwhile, is nominated for an Emmy the first nomination for an openly transgender person. It’s also time for the campy “SHARKNADO 2.” A shark in the New York subway? No big deal.

Manhattanites have seen rats that big.

AUGUST: Whoever would have thought a lowly bucket of ice would become a pop culture phenom? Celebs and regular folks alike take on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, generating many millions of dollars to fight the disease. Epic screams are heard, but the most entertainingly bloodcurdling comes from OPRAH WINFREY. And what would August be

without a wedding?

BRANGELINA finally ties the knot, at a small ceremony on their French estate. A very sad note to the month: The death of ROBIN WILLIAMS, whose manic energy graced screens big and small, leaves a gaping hole in the cultural landscape.

SEPTEMBER: Back to weddings - and in this year of celebrity knot-tying, nothing is bigger than the lavish Venice festivities surrounding the nuptials of the bachelor who said he’d never marry again GEORGE CLOONEY and British human rights lawyer AMAL ALAMUDDIN. Think traffic jams of paparazzi on gondolas.

This isn’t even the only Hollywood celebrity wedding in Italy this month - NEIL PATRICK HARRIS, next year’s Oscar host, marries partner DAVID BURTKA. Big tech news: The new iPhone 6 arrives, with its larger screen and inevitable prestige factor. APPLE also unveils its smartwatch, bringing the features of an iPhone to one’s arm, and Microsoft spends $2.5 billion for the company that created the hit game “Minecraft,” popular on mobile phones. Sadly, the world loses deliciously tart-tongued JOAN RIVERS, a trailblazer

for women in comedy.

OCTOBER: More life cycle events: KATE MIDDLETON appears in public for the first time since announcing that she’s expecting her second royal heir.

As for Hollywood royalty, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, about to make a splash with the latest “Hunger Games” installment, speaks out on the hacking scandal that led to nude photos of her - intended for her boyfriend - being published on websites.

“It is not a scandal.

It is a sex crime,” she says.

NOVEMBER: R e m e m b e r when Ellen’s selfie sorta broke the Internet? Well, KIM KARDASHIAN (yes, her again), aiming to do the same, poses nude for Paper magazine, and the focus on her posterior leads to all sorts of talk about “the year of the booty.” Kudos to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which tweets a photo of a strikingly similar figure from one of its 4000 B.C. statues, noting that they can “BreaktheInternet” too. TAYLOR SWIFT, meanwhile, takes a

stand, asking SPOTIFY to stop streaming her music, and setting up an intriguing standoff between the industry’s most popular artist and its top music streaming service. On a MUCH more serious note, BILL COSBY, once America’s most beloved TV dad, faces a cascade of allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted women decades ago. The comedian’s planned return to television is shelved, and his career suffers irreparable damage.

DECEMBER: Suddenly it’s the only thing anyone in Hollywood is talking about: The devastating SONY hacking scandal. After several weeks of embarrassing disclosures in hacked emails, the focus turns sharply in mid-December to genuine fear, as hackers threaten violence and mayhem at theatres showing “The Interview,” the Seth Rogen-James Franco film depicting the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Theater chains pull out, and Sony finally shelves the movie griefly before limited openings.

What will drive the B.C. economy in 2015

ever mind the dollar. Don’t pay attention to interest rates. Ignore the musings of the Prime Minister or the Premier.

What really drives the B.C. and Canadian economies is the good ol’ U.S. of A, and right now it is strong.

The U.S. ended 2014 with a growing GDP, rising stock markets, and declining unemployment.

Times are good, and when our neighbour to the south does well, so do we.

Our growing connection to Asia is paying off as well, as China builds its domestic markets to meet the demands of its growing middle class. It wants our natural resources, our wood, metals, energy, and food products. If we can increase our growing exports of services as well, we can really have something.

These are positive signs for the B.C. economy. We have sound infrastructure, a strong and growing education sector, good healthcare, and a technology sector with brains and connections; all that is

missing is the capital to allow it to really take off.

Sustaining this level of demand will keep B.C.’s economy moving towards full production and, quite frankly, we really don’t need much more to achieve it.

But we are not in control of our partners’ economies and, as we learned from the collapse in the price of oil over the last year, you just never know where the next sector of volatility will come from.

2014 saw the Petronasled Pacific Northwest LNG pipeline delay its final investment decision another year. But even if this project never comes through there are several other proposed LNG projects, such as LNG Canada backed by Shell, Kitimat LNG backed by Chevron, and Prince Rupert LNG backed by BG Group in the wings. At least one or two of these projects are expected to be developed, although their final investment decisions may not come until 2016 or later.

driven economy also received three major approvals last year, with the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline, BC Hydro’s Site C hydroelectric dam, and Seabridge Gold’s KSM mine now being able to move to the next stage of development.

But these approvals came in the face of 2014’s Tsilquot’in ruling, which recognized the rights of First Nations over land use decisions with far greater scope than governments and industry had expected. The decision will require a different approach to consultations.

But it’s isn’t just First

Nations which want meaningful consultations and a say in what’s happening: the public-at-large also wants to be included.

The Northern Gateway approval came with over 200 conditions, plus the key one not mentioned: the need to gain the public’s approval. The B.C. public, as well as key interest groups including First Nations, are opposed to piping oil from Alberta to B.C.’s coastal ports.

While this opposition may have at one time been isolated to Enbridge and the north, it now includes a rejection of the Keystone XL from Alberta to Texas, and the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

While this opposition has so far conveniently mostly targeted Alberta projects, the protest against the Site C dam in the Peace country could be a precursor of what lies ahead for B.C. business and the government.

Fear for the province’s proposed LNG pipelines falling prey to the same tactics have forced the companies involved in the

projects to begin building strong connections now by listening to the concerns of First Nations and local communities as well as to actively begin recruiting people through training and employment.

All in all, if the B.C. economy continues to rely on supplying the U.S. and Asian markets, then 2015 will probably be a good year.

Our staples of forest products, metals, and minerals, as well as our professional and business services, are in demand.

But for the province to really prosper over the next decade will require these new development projects to come onstream. But for that to happen will also require the establishment of real and effective communications between the proponents and the public. If we can do that, then next year will set the stage for a strong decade.

The good news on women’s rights in 2014 An editorial from the Toronto Star The annual end-of-year list of events that changed our world is normally one weighted heavily with disasters — war, terrorism, climate catastrophes, epidemics and economic upheaval.

That’s why a look back at some of the biggest news stories in 2014 is so surprising: it can actually make one feel hopeful.

In a break from tradition, the stories that most captured world attention in 2014 trumpeted something undeniably positive – the rise of women’s rights. Specifically they told us: no man is so powerful he can assault a woman and actually count on getting away with it. And no woman is so powerless that a crime against her doesn’t matter.

The stories didn’t mean that sexism, misogyny, harassment, victim blaming and violence against women don’t still exist.

But what was startling in 2014 was that those human rights abuses were top of the news and social media agendas, being written about, debated — and condemned — by women and men alike.

More importantly, when combined, the stories heralded a potentially permanent shift in the landscape, one that bodes well for years ahead.

In Canada, the shift was more of a tsunami than a tilt after accusations of sexual assault against star CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi created a flood of angst and anger that engulfed everyone from doctors accused of sexually assaulting patients, to MPs on Parliament Hill accused of “personal misconduct,” to junior hockey players.

Fifteen woman came forward to accuse Ghomeshi of violent acts against them.

Three would take their complaints to police.

The laying of charges — four counts of sexual assault and one of overcoming resistance by choking — went a long way to prove no one is too privileged to avoid prosecution. But perhaps a bigger message was this: no longer would the court of public

opinion side with a powerful man against alleged victims. Ghomeshi lost his job and went from powerhouse to pariah even before charges were laid.

Similarly, two MPs, Massimo Pacetti and Scott Andrews, were suspended from the Liberal caucus after allegations surfaced against them, despite the fact no charges have been laid.

And just as the Ghomeshi story inspired coverage of other allegations of abuse in the corridors of the CBC, news of the MPs’ suspension spawned an outpouring of stories — from reporters, political aides, even former politician Sheila Copps — about assaults in the halls of political power.

Exalted sports celebrities, too, were no more immune to the shift in public opinion than entertainers or politicians.

The Ontario Hockey League wasted no time benching players Greg Betzold and Jake Marchment for 15 games for making sexist remarks on social media.

And the University of Ottawa suspended its men’s hockey program and fired the head coach after allegations of sexual misconduct against some members of the team. All that occurred before charges were laid against two players.

In the wake of the Ghomeshi scandal, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario announced that it, too, would finally review its policies on sexual assault.

The review could mean doctors who sexually abuse female patients would not be able to keep their licence and continue to treat male patients — as the college has been allowing. The college is also considering whether it should automatically report sexual abuse complaints to police, something that may see doctors criminally charged instead of just facing disciplinary action from the college.

It wasn’t just Canada where the tables of power were being overturned.

In the U.S., the NFL suspended running back Ray

Rice indefinitely and the Baltimore Ravens fired him in September after a video surfaced of Rice knocking his fiancée, now wife, out cold in an Atlantic City hotel elevator.

It was a year, too, when Bill Cosby made the cover of People magazine, not for his fame but for his infamy, after more than a dozen women alleged he had drugged and raped them.

Meanwhile, South African Olympic superstar Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to a five-year prison term for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day. His conviction wasn’t enough of a fall from grace. Prosecutors are now seeking a longer jail term.

At the same time as the powerful were being knocked from their pedestals, the previously powerless were being told they matter.

The murder of aboriginal teen Tina Fontaine demonstrated that the public would no longer stand silent when native women are attacked.

In the shadow of Fontaine’s murder the Harper government refused to launch a national inquiry into the 1,181 aboriginal women who have been murdered or gone missing since 1980. Instead, it unveiled a $25-million, fiveyear plan to help curb violence against aboriginal women and girls.

The vocal, visceral crosscountry reaction: It wasn’t enough.

Meanwhile, where once girls trying to seek an education could be killed with impunity by the Taliban, the world responded to the shooting of one girl in Pakistan in 2012 — Malala Yousafzai — by awarding her the Nobel Peace Prize.

Whether the victims were young or old, whether the crimes perpetrated against them were recent or decades past, the stories pointed to one thing: they mattered. As for perpetrators — no matter how privileged — they didn’t.

And if the signposts in the events of 2014 are any signal, there will be no turning back.

Pope’s message was for all to hear

T

he Christmas greeting that Pope Francis delivered to members of the Roman Curia was anything but “have your self a merry little Christmas.” Described in the press as a “blistering attack”, a “public rebuke”, and a “scathing critique”, Francis called his brother bishops to account for fifteen “curial diseases”. While the Curia was the target audience for the pontiff’s address, the rest of us might think twice before we applaud this public dressing down of the “princes of the church” and shake our fingers at them; the Pope’s message is applicable to all.

Using the image of the Church as the mystical body of Christ, Francis warned that the Curia, like any body, is exposed to diseases. The “more louise common diseases” affecting the life of the Curia include “thinking we are immortal, Everyday Theology immune, or downright indispensable”, “the Martha complex of excessive busyness”, “mental and spiritual petrification”, “excessive planning and functionalism”, “poor coordination”, “spiritual Alzheimer’s”, “rivalry and vainglory”, “existential schizophrenia”, “gossiping, grumbling and back-biting”, “idolizing superiors”, “indifference to others”, “a funereal face”, “hoarding”, “closed circles” and “worldly profit (and) forms of self-exhibition”.

While the pontiff’s unflattering appraisal of the state of the Curia will not endear him to his detractors, Francis remains committed to reforming the culture of the Vatican. He has been leading by example, chipping away at clericalism, with its culture of superiority and privilege. With his catalogue of “curial diseases”, Francis continues to challenge the members of the Curia to reform their hearts and minds.

While many see this as an attack that will draw the battle lines between the Pope and his opponents, it is also an invitation to conversion coming from a man who takes the need for his own conversion seriously, and who despite the title of “his holiness” refers to himself as “chief of sinners”. Francis is not asking any more of these cardinals than he asks of himself.

After addressing the Curia, Francis met with the employees of the Vatican and their families. In his remarks to them, he referred to his speech to the Curia; he encouraged them to use it as a starting point for an examination of conscience in preparation for Christmas and the New Year.

In my view, through the public nature of these two events held on the same day, Francis invites all of us to reflect upon his comments in light of our own lives, our communities of worship, and our places of work. While the Curia was the primary audience for the Pope’s comments, their significance should not be restricted to criticism of the Curia or to a commentary on the politics of the Vatican. The Pope’s message has implications for human conduct everywhere.

The “curial diseases” that Francis describes are linked to self-absorption and to a false sense of autonomy, to forgetting that we live, move and have our being in the context of our relationships with others and with God. None of us are immune to these diseases. I know that I recognized myself in some of them.

With a New Year upon us, we might think about the ways these “curial diseases” find a home in us, and formulate our New Year’s resolutions accordingly. We may find ourselves feeling uncomfortable and exposed along with the members of the Roman Curia.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The NFL’s troubles with domestic violence were selected the sports story of the year Tuesday in an annual vote conducted by The Associated Press.

Ninety-four ballots were submitted from U.S. editors and news directors. Voters were asked to rank the top 10 sports stories of the year, with the first-place story receiving 10 points, the second-place story nine points and so on.

NFL domestic violence received 659 points and 29 first-place votes.

The No. 2 sports story, Clippers owner Donald Sterling forced out by the NBA after his racist statements, had 518 points.

Here are 2014’s top 10 stories: 1. NFL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Baltimore Ravens star running back Ray Rice knocked his nowwife unconscious in an Atlantic City casino eleva-

tor Feb. 15, but it wasn’t until July 24 that domestic violence cases spiraled into a crisis roiling the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Rice for just two games, which drew widespread derision. More than a month passed before Goodell admitted he “didn’t get it right” and announced harsher sanctions for future domestic violence offences.

But the NFL’s problems were only beginning. On Sept. 8, TMZ Sports released video from inside the elevator that showed Rice punching his then-fiancee; the Ravens responded by releasing him and Goodell suspended him indefinitely.

And on Sept. 12, one of the league’s biggest stars, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, was indicted on felony child abuse charges for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son. The Vikings initially planned to play him just over a week later, reversing course only

The veteran centre had come out 10 months earlier, a trailblazing moment that helped inspire other athletes and sports officials to follow his lead in 2014. That included Missouri All-American Michael Sam, who went on to be drafted into the NFL, though he has yet to play in a game.

One significant final tip of the hat to the Trail kid who did us proud on diamonds around North America.

The rest of the passing year provided many good moments, some not-sogood, but if you are reading this, at least you survived it.

•I don’t know as I compose this how the Smoke Eaters ended 2014, as the result from West Kelowna is pending. I do know it was really nice to see Trail get some balanced scoring in a must-have win in their first game back from the holiday break.

I know, too, that that has to continue on the road for the Smokies to have any chance to climb into a playoff position in probably the toughest division in Junior A hockey.

It is really too bad, after sending fans home with smiles on their faces for the first time in a while since back-to-back wins at Cominco Arena in mid-November in fact - that it will be two weeks before Trail has another home game. Here’s hoping they can scare up some on-the-road standings points between now and then so fans can be hopeful when next Trail hits home ice January 9.

Been a positive week for Trail in a very important aspect of the BCHL. The latest two scholarship commitments bring the number of college-bound Smoke Eaters on the current roster to nine. That is second only to Penticton in the league and, despite the standings, means the Smokies have been doing good work this

Raonic became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles semifinal in the Open era. He fell to Roger Federer in straight sets at the All England Club but later gained revenge with his first career victory over the Swiss star at the Paris Masters.

That win helped Raonic qualify for the season-ending tournament in London for the first time. He finished the season ranked eighth in the world and posted a 49-20 record on the year.

“I did achieve the goals that I specified but I always have this yearning for more, more, more,” Raonic said in a phone interview after a recent training session in Monte Carlo. “It doesn’t matter how much I do, I always want more - especially when it comes to my tennis.”

Before Raonic, the last Canadian to reach a men’s singles semifinal at a major was Robert Powell at Wimbledon in 1908, according to Tennis Canada. Montreal native Greg Rusedski reached the U.S. Open final in 1997 but he was representing Britain at the time.

Raonic finished with 29 of the 82 votes (35 per cent) in balloting of sports editors and broadcasters across the country. Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty was second with 19 votes (23 per cent).

The dog breeders are denying them the “use and enjoyment” of their property, and they can sue for injunctive relief and damages. It should be a last resort,

but it could be very effective. Sometimes a letter from an attorney stating the intent to file suit will suffice.

Of course, before they threaten to sue, they must be prepared to follow through in case the dog breeders call their bluff. Never bark

Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Need Help,” the young wife who doesn’t like sex.

I don’t believe she is unusual or unhealthy or necessarily asexual.

I felt the same way in my 20s and still do in my 60s. I have a faithful husband who likes regular sex. I would be happy with frequent cuddling and only occasional sex. I tried everything to change, from hormones to counseling.

What finally worked for me was realizing (in my 40s) that I am lucky to be a female and can perform sexually whether I’m aroused or not. My husband and I agreed on a frequency of sex that meets his needs, and once in a while, I enjoy it, too.
