Health officials downplay Ebola concerns

Rossland nurse practitioner Patrice Gordon returned to Kelowna Christmas Day after treating Ebola patients at a Red Cross treatment centre in Sierra Leone and was partway into the three-week period of self-monitoring to watch for the emergence of symptoms after potential exposure.

A health care worker who recently returned to B.C. from Sierra Leone is being tested for Ebola at Kelowna General Hospital, although officials say there is no cause for concern.

“We can say with a high degree of confidence ...it’s not looking like Ebola at all,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, a provincial health officer.

“But because of their history working with patients with Ebola, we need to be abundantly confident.”

A first set of blood tests done Monday came back negative, and results from a second set due to arrive today are expected to offer those assurances.

The woman who is being tested at KGH is Rossland nurse practitioner Patrice Gordon, who arrived in Kelowna Christmas Day, following a stint treating Ebola patients at a Red Cross treatment centre in Sierra Leone.

Upon her arrival, she was asymptomatic, said Dr. Rob Parker, an Interior Health medical health officer. “(She) felt well, and they were doing twice-a-

day symptom and fever checks,” said Parker.

Protocol for health care workers who have been in Ebola plagued West Africa includes a 21 day probation period.

Throughout the three week incubation period, they’re not allowed to return to work and they must continually self monitor for any symptoms, reporting daily to health officials.

In this case, worrisome symptoms were reported fairly quickly.

The woman noticed a low grade fever on Sunday, and it was accompanied by a bit of a sore throat.

By the next morning symptoms were still mild, but ongoing so she drove herself to KGH’s

emergency room at around 6 p.m. Monday.

Hospital staff trained in how to deal with Ebola patients ushered her into the hospital through a door in the back of the ambulance bay, adjacent to the emergency department, where there’s a quarantine room, said Kelowna General Hospital chief of staff Dr. Mike Ertel.

At no time did Gordon come in contact with any patients. Simply walking by would not have spread the infection anyway.

Contact with bodily fluid is how the infection is spread.

“The emergency is open and fully functional, and there is no risk to patients or visitors whatsoever,” said Ertel,

trying to assuage any concerns.

Gordon made a similar attempt through a statement she issued Tuesday.

“The biggest concern is that the publicity given to my situation here in (B.C.) right now might deflect some of the attention from the real issue, which is the plight of the people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia,” she said.

“I’d like to reassure my family and the public that I have absolute confidence that I am receiving the best of care in a fashion that fully protects the public. I want to encourage everyone to keep the focus where it belongs—back in West Africa.”

Gordon is not the only

health care worker who has returned to B.C. from West Africa and under scrutiny for Ebola.

Seven other health care workers are now selfmonitoring and not going to work while they wait for the end of the 21-day Ebola incubation period.

Nine previous B.C. individuals have also undergone the threeweek wait to ensure no Ebola symptoms appeared.

Only once before has a patient been isolated in a B.C. hospital and tested for Ebola because of the emergence of symptoms that could not immediately be ruled out.

That case was handled in August at Vancouver General Hospital.

No positive Ebola cases

have yet been confirmed in B.C. If one is, the patient will be treated by a specialty team at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Most health care workers returning to B.C. from serving in West Africa have been in the Lower Mainland, but Henry said there are some in every region of the province.

Kelowna General is one of five B.C. hospitals designated to isolate suspect Ebola patients awaiting testing and treatment within their regions.

Other Ebola referral hospitals are Surrey Memorial for the Lower Mainland, Royal Jubilee Hospital for Vancouver Island, University Hospital

of Northern B.C. in Prince George for the North, while children would go to B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Even prior to the arrival of any suspect Ebola cases, health officials in B.C. have been grappling with intense anxiety among health care workers and their unions over the procedures to contain the virus.

Several patients in Fraser Health have previously been flagged for screening as possible Ebola patients, but have been ruled out in each case.

Over 60 centimetres of snow fell in a sevenday period around Christmas, bringing out a large number of local skiers and adding to an already robust number of Christmas tourists who had planned vacations at Big White.

“We knew the Christmas reservations were the largest we have seen in our history, but this new snow brought out more locals and condo residents than ever before,” said Michael Ballingall, Big White’s senior vice-president.

“If we don’t get the snow, these people don’t come out. It’s a statement on the consistency of the weather patterns in the Okanagan Valley.”

Traditionally, New Year’s Day is the busiest single day at Big White, and this year was expected to be much the same.

In a two-day span earlier this week, Big White set all time records in several different areas including the rental of ski and snowboard equipment, (1,774 units), overnight guests booked in rental accommodation (96.2 per cent of accommodations were booked), visitor day parking (2,118) as well as the amount of water use in the resort (over

Big White is on its own water supply which has a capacity of 750,000 US gallons a day.

Ballingall said it’s the truest measure of the sheer numbers of people at the resort, as some people don’t buy lift tickets but instead spend the day doing any number of other activities.

New Year’s Day was expected to bring water usage upwards of 600,000 US gallons at the resort, which also has the ability to access a different reservoir at the hill if water usage gets close to capacity.

Ballingall said the record Christmas isn’t just good news for the resort, it spreads throughout the valley as businesses that operate in Big White

“You look at the people arriving at the airport and staying in hotels. Everyone gets a percentage of the visits to the mountain.”

In terms of tourists, Big White says a busy time at the ski hill will benefit the entire tourism industry in the Okanagan, mostly known and marketed as a summer destination.

But Big White is making a case for the region as a summer and winter destination.

“The winter tourism business is growing,” he

said.

“It always used to be about the beaches and peaches. Now they are seeing there are more warm bodies coming into the interior for the winter tourism and that is helping everyone.”

Increased snowfall early this week allowed Big White to open a number of new lifts and terrain in the resort, including in the West Ridge ski area.

The opening of the West Ridge area increased skiable terrain at the resort by 48 per cent.

Line-ups formed early as skiers and boarders anticipated fresh tracks on the previously unskied areas as four locals

grabbed the first chair to the West Ridge area —Mike Berger, Megan Griffiths, Keith Klotz and Bob Vaughan were the first up the Gem Lake Express.

Skiing outside of the resort remains treacherous with avalanche warnings in effect throughout the province, due to the layer of snow that froze with warm temperatures early in the season followed by heavy snowfall on top of that layer of ice.

“Extending these credits will provide longlasting benefits for employers and skilled trades workers and help fuel the skilled workforce we need to keep B.C.’s economy moving.”

To encourage First Nations participation in trades, individual and employer tax credits are enhanced by 50 per cent.

Persons with disabilities and their employers are also eligible for enhanced tax credits under this program.

The Training Tax Credit program is designed to attract people to apprenticeship programs in B.C. to gain the experience they need to qualify for skilled trades jobs. The program also provides employers with an incentive to hire and train apprentices so they can get the work experience they need to find the job they want to support themselves and their families.

“Since the program began in 2007, thousands of apprentices have enrolled and gone on to secure stable, well-paying jobs throughout B.C.,” said Minister of Finance Michael de Jong.

Life was already tough enough for a single Kelowna dad with three kids and a new business.

But for Simon Ng, the real struggle began last July when his 11-yearold daughter Myranda was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—the same type of bone cancer that stopped Terry Fox. The diseased lower leg was amputated and Myranda began regular chemo treatments at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

But the family’s 1998 Tercel was never designed to hold an extended family of two adults, four kids and a full-sized wheelchair, especially for weekly return trips of 780 km.

For all these reasons, the partners in the Freedom Road Project— Craftsman Collision, Royal

Sun Alliance (RSA) and BC Automobile Association (BCAA)—selected Mr. Ng as the first beneficiary of their charitable initiative—a refurbished 2010 Limited Edition Ford Explorer plus $1000 worth of insurance.

Ng was lured to the Dec. 22 presentation at the Craftsman Collision Kelowna shop by his companion Sandra under the pretext of redeeming a coupon.

Instead, he found a smiling group of family and friends and a nearmint SUV full of gifts for his children.

“It was a total surprise,” said Ng, a former youth pastor who now officiates weddings, works as a youth counselor and mentors minor hockey teams.

“The car is beautiful, it looks great. I’m still in

shock.”

“Simon is more than worthy,” wrote one of several individuals nominating him for the award.

“He gives and gives and gives to the community. He is one of the most soul-filled men I know, and really deserves the break.”

“Simon is a dynamite dad, a kind, responsible and caring human being who has given back to the youth of Kelowna for many years,” wrote another.

“Hearing and reading about so many families and charities in need in the Central Okanagan made it hard to keep a dry eye,” said Rick Hatswell, CEO of Craftsman Collision.

The auto body repair business is the lead partner in the Freedom

Road Project and whose technicians and painters restored the Explorer to a showroom-like lustre.

“We hope this will bring some much-needed Christmas cheer to the Ng family after having such a tough year, and we look forward to working with the same partners on the Freedom Road Project again next year,” Hatswell said.

“We are so proud to participate in this meaningful project which gives us the opportunity to give back to the communities where we live and work,” said claims adjuster Gladys Kosowan, with the international insurance group RSA, another Freedom Road partner.

Kelowna woman wins A&W fundraiser new car prize hits home for Uzelman because his daughter has CF, as do thousands of other children across Canada.

“It’s a devastating lung condition that needs some help. So we stepped up to the plate and we’r e a happy to do our part,” Uzelman said to one local media outlet last month.

Myles Longphee, the general manager of Bannister Cadillac Kelowna and spokesman for the Bannister Automotive Group, echoed Uzelman’s sentiments.

He said Bannister is excited to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause.

Sebastian Akesson and his fiance Amanda Cradock-Henry were just trying to help out a worthy cause.

That cause was the annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis research, held at various A&W restaurants across the Okanagan, with $1 from every burger sold and 100 per cent of donations raised on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, going to the ‘Breath Of Life’ campaign.

The event raised about $40,000.

But the event took on an added meaning for Akesson and CradockHenry, as her draw prize ticket was the lucky winner of the 2015 Chevy Spark,donated courtesy of the Bannister Automotive Group, local A&W restaurants and the Okanagan chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis of Canada.

Kelowna A&W franchise owner Claude Uzelman said he’s participated in this fundraiser for more than five years now, and raised about $250,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, CF is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults, and there is no cure.

Electorate duped by those whom we elect To the editor: I read with interest the letter to the editor, Surreptitious Dealings in WK, written by Mike Budd, printed in the Capital News on Dec. 19, 2014.

LETTER OF THE WEEK I agree with Budd’s comments regarding a serious lack of input in regards to the proposed new city hall and civic centre. Where and when did any public consultation happen? If it did occur, who was present?

Not long ago, I remember reading an article where [West Kelowna] Mayor Doug Findlater was quoted as saying you need a thick skin to be a politician. His may not be thick enough yet, as he seems reluctant to face the electorate—and explain truthfully.

If you are proud and positive of your decision and you can back it up with supporting data/facts, then face the electorate and elaborate.

If you can’t or won’t do this, well maybe the electorate made a mistake.

In my view, the mayor’s failure to stand, face the electorate and admit he and council have been making decisions affecting the District of West Kelowna is inexcusable. Not allowing the electorate to its rightful voice through a referendum is also inexcusable.

I see one group and one group only, happy with council’s preferred site for a new city hall and civic centre.

Other sites had been mentioned but were poo—pooed by the mayor and council (exceptions are Neis and Ensign who were just elected), some with solid reasons, others not so much—the old Home Hardware site at Bartley and Byland for example. I got the impression:

There are plenty examples of this and other provinces, and even the country, giving money and resources away to people who don’t live here.

Well, the province is doing it again with its new hunting regulations. The regulations greatly increase the amount of animals that non-resident hunters can bag. This is great news for the Guide Outfitters Association of BC (GOABC), and according to the B.C. Wildlife Federation, bad news for resident hunters. The regulations mean that there will be less available elk, moose, mountain goat and grizzly tickets available for resident hunters. However, there are no hunting quotas for mule deer or whitetail deer. So lets look at these changes in perspective.

If you are a person who hunts for food, there is still plenty of opportunity to fill your freezer with venison. And in these expensive times, going out to bag a whitetail makes good economic sense in terms of feeding a family. That does not however, excuse this recent legislation.

MY office has received many letters over the years stating that while some hunters say that they do hunt elk and moose, and even bear for food, that is

a preference, not a need. They say that the hunters who go after these animals do so for the trophy and prestige of bagging big game, with the meat being a secondary consideration.

But while trophy hunters, which much of this new legislation is for, may be considered by some to be making up for inadequacies by killing something much more magnificent than themselves, that is not the point.

GOABC claims that the 5,000 non-resident hunters that visit the province each year generate around $120 million. In total, the revenue generated by all hunting in the province sits at around $350 million. The numbers trotted out by the province say that resident hunters bring in around $7 million in license fees, but this doesn’t come remotely close to the economic benefit brought in from the more than 100,000 hunters who live here, hunt here and spend their paychecks in the local economy.

Experts have argued for decades that if all the timber harvested here was given extra value by local industry, the amount of extra money coming into the province would be enormous.

seems to want to ship the raw materials out as quickly as possible before buying back the refined product for a much great cost.

Call it the Canadian way, but we are selling ourselves short. The same is true for these new regulations for hunting.

Regardless of whatever reasons for the switch, people can be forgiven for thinking this is yet another example of the province that prefers to sell out to non-residents rather than give the people who live and spend here an even break.

As a note for GOABC, this organization may want to watch what it asks for. More hunting permitted for non-residents will open up your market to newcomers. When more people feeling they can make a living as a guide outfitter under the new rules, the prices charged today will go down.

Discount outfitters will crop up and before you know it, owners of these operations will be fighting to make minimum wage.

And no matter what some feel personally about hunting for anything other than food, the province has blown an opportunity to show the residents of B.C. that it has their back.

Look at long-term benefits of rail/trail To the editor: I would like to say that I think the opportunity for Kelowna, Lake Country and Vernon to purchase the CN Rail line to possibly be developed into a Rails to Trails system, is a once in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Obtaining and building this stretch of land into trails will open the door to many more tourists to the Okanagan area, specifically Kelowna through to Vernon. My understanding is that if we, the community, do not purchase this stretch of land, it will be sold off as private sales. We will never have this opportunity again.

If we keep community-minded, this stretch of land could be developed to ensure that everyone can enjoy it. It is easy access to walking and biking along the lakes which would provide safe trails vs walking or cycling along the highway.

Because the grade is so gradual, those

who are wheelchair dependent or using other walking aids would be able to access and use the trail. Others that would use this trail include young and old alike, families, athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, bird watchers, dog walkers and the list can go on.

The views along the CN Rail are varied and changing from beginning to end. These views cannot be seen or enjoyed in their entireties when driving by.

There are many other communities in the Okanagan that have trails or pathways for walking and biking along lake shores. There are pathways in Osoyoos, Penticton, the trail between OK Falls and Penticton and in Peachland to name a few. I have used, enjoyed and continue to use and go back to these trails and pathways. As well, I have met and talked to many people from out of town, that return year after year to the Okanagan.

These people are aware of and use the

Okanagan trails. It would be such a benefit for them and our community if we could add another trail.

In the end, it would be a shame if we turned down this opportunity to build an easy access trail system that would enhance our communities, draw in tourists and ultimately leave a wonderful legacy for our children and grandchildren.

This is a grand opportunity for our region and I would hope that individuals can look at all the benefits vs the cost. Yes, I realize there is a cost to it, but the cost per household per year is minimal and the benefits will long outlive the cost.

In the end, I do not want to be the one to tell my grandchildren that the Rails to Trails did not come to fruition because the almighty dollar was more important than our health and wellness.

The perils of a ‘parallel state’ To the editor: Re: Nisga’a Prove Their Critics Wrong (B.C. Views, Dec. 3 Black Press. See http://tinyurl. com/n5jst8m).

Tom Fletcher seems to have had an epiphany that’s led to his urging acceptance of Supreme Court of Canada rulings which enabled the creation by the Nisga’a Nation of (in Fletcher’s words) “a parallel state” in B.C. Fletcher may never have learned “that two wrongs don’t make a right.”

The first long-standing wrong at issue is the sorry treatment of aboriginals in both B.C. and across Canada. Despite significant improvements over recent years, more remains to be done.

The second wrong is that the Supreme Court of Canada now enables a new layer of government in B.C.

What’s been created is a “landed gentry” of sorts who’ve in effect received authority to exercise sovereign powers, and they now plan to establish multiple export-enabling LNG terminals on the B.C. coast.

B.C. taxpayers will follow such developments with interest, particularly if there is no parallel commitment by the Nisga’a to assume increasing responsibility for both federal and provincial government services as their “parallel state” business plans prove profitable.

The old adage that “there’s only one taxpayer” could, with Nisga’a concurrence remain a truism.

It’s based on the realization that whether for services provided by local, provincial or federal governments, most voters and elected leaders have long recognized that it’s the

I asked for a referendum in conjunction with the election. I was told that wasn’t possible. Why not? I was told, the time frame would not allow.

So now I ask: “Was this purposely delayed, so it couldn’t be part of the November election process?”

Too many politicians today speak with a forked tongue, or pre-prepare statements that may be less than truthful. In my opinion, this seems to be true with both the Westbank First Nation and DWK governments on the west side of Okanagan Lake today.

Do any of us really know what they are up to? Who made the decision, and what is the plan? Who will really benefit? Will it be the people of the WFN and the people of DWK, or will it be individuals, silent partners, numbered companies where we don’t know the principals, etc.?

I hear all this rhetoric about transparency, but it’s hard to find, and getting more difficult to believe when you listen to reports, or are they fabrications? The proof in the end will always be in the pudding.

The WFN bypass and underpass isn’t really to “nowhere,” because it is going somewhere and to something. It just isn’t clear yet, “to what” or “for what purpose.”

It might be a hospital. It might not. Stay tuned, we haven’t talked to our people yet, so we will let you know in due course. So see, the WFN government is not much different than the government in the District of West Kelowna.

The DWK council wants to build the city hall and civic centre where they want it. They believe they can deflect the flak over their chosen site and its cost. Once the property has been purchased and construction started, what can the electorate do? They will soften to it in time, they have to.

I agree with Mike Budd, a referendum with full disclosure is the only avenue for council if they want to hold their heads high.

Quite simply, to all you elected officials: You elected to run for a governmental position; we elected you to work for the majority in “our” electorate! If there’s any uncertainty what the majority wants, then do the right thing and ask us in a referendum.

Unanswered questions include: Will this aboriginal “parallel state” acknowledge a responsibility to—within its anticipated capability—participate as a fully functional entity within our national federation?

Will it fund a portion of the many provincial and federal government services it now receives? Will it commit to creating and funding its self-determined unique government service programs?

Historical antipathy between First Nation, local, provincial and federal agencies indicates a need for strong but flexible leadership at all four governmental levels. In seeking a comprehensive governmental rebalancing, we’ll hopefully avoid historically based emotional rhetoric supporting retributive rationale if we’re to minimize costly, confrontational negotiations.

In B.C., our often-envied Canadian cultural mosaic is at risk of becoming a dysfunctional and tattered societal quilt.

Kelowna writing school starts seminar series A new writing school has been started in Kelowna.

Curious Beyond Words School of Writing, founded by long-time local writer, editor and instructor Dona Sturmanis.

Sturmanis will kick off the school’s start in the new year with 16 Saturday workshops being offered in downtown Kelowna. The workshop series, which starts Jan. 10, features guest speakers and instructors along with Sturmanis as host.

Workshops in January will include Plan & Progress Your Writing Project, The Art of Fine Food and Wine Writing with Jennifer Schell, Wild at Heart Poetry Primer with Cherie Hanson and Keys to Creating Books Children Want to Read with Karen Autio.

“There is definitely a need in Kelowna for an independent, private writing school,” said Sturmanis.

“There are schools for the other arts—dance, music, theatre, cooking, visual arts, pottery, but not writing.

“Yes, there are writing courses offered through institutions, but the idea here is to be non-institutional.

Writing is fun and in our informal, upbeat classes, the learning is fun. And very social.”

These latest studies out of the University of California have now identified 60 genes with more than 90 per cent chance of increasing the risk of ASD. This is a significant advance in understanding as earlier studies found only 11 such genes.

Scientists from the California studies say their findings have enabled a better understanding of the nature of genetic mutations associated with

ASD. Genes uncovered in these studies seem to cluster around three sets of biological functions: Development of synapses important for communication between nerves; the creation of genetic instructions; and DNA packaging within cells.

Each of these areas has the potential to cause traits commonly associated with autism.

Mostly, this new research represents an improvement in our understanding of the biology underpinning autism.

When we have a better understanding

with the most success include applied behaviour analysis and educational intervention, which have demonstrated effectiveness at improving global functioning and intellectual ability in young children with ASD. I look forward to seeing what will come of the continued research into the genetic and biological underpinnings of this complicated set of disorders.

More research might help determine what environmental factors may cause those genes to mutate.

ASD affects one in every 165 children.

It is a spectrum of conditions that affects brain development and function and tends to cause difficulties with communication and social interaction.

It also results in unusual patterns of behaviour, sensory perception, activities and interests.

Symptoms can range from very mild to debilitating where individuals are virtually unable to communicate.

To date, treatments

of what is taking place within the body, we are closer to having the ability to create effective treatments for it.

To date, many people with autism spectrum disorder have limited success with available therapies. A breakthrough could be a huge step forward.

Unlocking the genetics behind autism also provides hope for prevention.

Researchers in these studies noted that some of the genes they identified were genes that are not passed from either parent but developed within the egg or sperm before conception.

Apply now for water project funding The Okanagan Basin Water Board is now accepting applications to its 2015 Water Conservation and Quality Improvement Grant program.

The grants are distributed according to the percentage of tax each region pays into the program.

This year there is $56,850 available to the North Okanagan, $179,310 to the Central Okanagan, and $63,840 to the South Okanagan.

Last year, the water board conducted a comprehensive review of all previous grants and created a new grant database at www.obwb. ca/wcqi_project/.

“The projects were organized into 18 categories from drought planning to xeriscape,” explained OBWB office and project manager James Littley.

Littley said the water board of directors has chosen eight categories for special consideration

during this grant cycle— among them drought planning, groundwater, irrigation, metering, restoration, source protection, water system improvement (quantity and quality) and water flow monitoring.

“Projects in these categories really address some of the board’s priority areas from the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan,” said Littley.

“They also complement projects that OBWB staff are currently working on

and close some of the gaps in the valley-wide management of water.”

Still, the OBWB encourages applications in all conservation and quality improvement categories.

“The application process is straightforward, and this year all the forms are available online,” Littley said.

On average, 20 projects are funded per year. Over the past eight years since the program began, the OBWB has awarded $2.9

million to 179 projects worth more than $18 million.

Earlier this fall, the three Okanagan regional districts renewed their commitment to fund this program for four more years.

This year’s grant application deadline is 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, 2015.

House fire started in the furnace room Kelowna Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire Monday night at the 600 block of Cook Rd. Residents were home when the fire started and kept it at bay with a dry chemical extinguisher before fire crews arrived.

The fire department members finished extinguishing the smoldering material and ventilated smoke from the residence. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time but not deemed suspicious.

There were no injuries. The fire department would like to remind everyone to ensure their smoke alarms are working by testing them periodically.

City of Kelowna employees recently presented the Central & South Okanagan Similkameen United Way with a cheque for $31,210 at City Hall. The money was raised from a bake sale, chili cook-off, pancake breakfast, wine draw, 50/50 draw and a joint RCMP golf tournament. As well, 114 city employees contributed $23,759 through biweekly payroll deductions. “United Way’s community-minded mission complements our own: to improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action,” said the Kelowna City Hall United Way campaign coordinator, Mardelle Corbett. Last year, city employees contributed $30,744 to the United Way. The money supports 39 charities and the United Way’s own Impact Programs in the Central and South Okanagan and Similkameen region. The Kelowna Rockets have one more week to endure before captain Madison Bowey returns and recently-acquired Josh Morrissey joins his new Western Hockey League club.

Factor an injured Mitchell Wheaton and the trade of Jesse Lees last month, and the Rockets’ young defensive corps has been stretched to the limit since the middle of December.

All in all, assistant coach Kris Mallette is pleased with the way the remaining group of rearguards has responded.

“Other than (20-yearold) Cole Martin, we are extremely young back there right now,” said Mallette.

“Dalton Yorke missed a significant amount of time with an injury, so it took him a while to get back his game back. We have another 18-yearold (Riley Stadel) and three 17s, so really this is a defense that’s still in its development.”

Joe Gatenby is just 17, but with a pared down defensive corps, Mallette said the Kelowna product

is logging minutes more befitting a veteran and is facing other team’s top lines on a nightly basis.

As for rookies Devante Stephens and Lucas Johansen, Mallette said both are on an accelerated learning curve.

“It’s a situation where we’ve had to throw them in, there have been bumps along the way, but all the minutes they’re getting should pay off down the road,” Mallette added. “On the whole, our young guys have all done very well.”

As for the expected return of Bowey and Morrissey from the world juniors—potentially around Jan. 10—Mallette is looking forward to working with two of the junior game’s best.

“They’re elite players and the experience they’ll get at world juniors will be invaluable. Ever since the trade, I’ve been getting texts from people saying our back end is something special. It’s exciting for our hockey club.”

The Rockets (29-63-0) return to action Friday when they visit the Kamloops Blazers.

On Saturday, Kelowna will play host to the Prince

George Cougars.

SHARKS SIGN CHARTIER…

Rockets’ centre Rourke Chartier has signed an entry level contract with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks.

The Saskatoon native was drafted by the Sharks in the fifth round of the 2014 entry draft.

“Rourke is having a tremendous season and has become one of the premiere goal scorers in the Canadian junior leagues,” said Sharlks GM Doug Wilson. “He has taken his offensive game to a new level this season and plays a very complete game in all three zones.

We look forward to watching his steady development.”

Chartier, 18, currently leads all Canadian junior players in goals (35) and ranks fourth in the Western Hockey League (WHL) in points (54) in 32 games played this season. He was named the WHL Player of the Month for November, and earned the WHL Player of the Week honour from Nov. 3 to 9. In addition, Chartier attended Canada’s national junior team selection camp in December.

Warriors open up 2015 in Salmon Arm The West Kelowna Warriors kick off the new year on the road when they visit the Salmon Arm SilverBacks Friday in BCHL action.

The Warriors then return home Saturday to host the Merritt Centennials. Face off at Royal LePage is 7 p.m.

The Interior Division remains tight with the Warriors (19-13-05) trailing second-place Vernon by four points, and leading Merritt by three for third.

What a difference a year makes.

Twelve months after their best performance ever at the Mac’s midget hockey tournament, the Okanagan Rockets came up winless at the annual international showcase in Calgary.

The young and largely inexperienced Rockets closed out the 2014-15 tournament on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to the Grande Prairie Storm to finish at 0-4-0.

Last year, the Rockets had their best finish ever at Mac’s, reaching the semifinals before losing to the eventual champions, Team Finland.

Captain Mark Krabben is the only returning player on the defending BCMML’s champs 20-man roster.

The Okanagan squad opened the tournament with a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Buffaloes on Boxing Day, followed by a 6-3 loss to the Ontario (CA) Avalanche on Saturday.

On Monday, in their best effort of the week, the Rockets were shutout 2-0 by the Regina Pat Canadians.

Next week, the Rockets will be back to defend their title at the Kelowna Elite International Midget Tournament at Rutland and Memorial Arenas.

Play begins Wednesday, Jan. 7 with the Rockets taking on South Delta Academy.

After swimming her way on to Canada’s national team in April, Kelowna’s Kierra Smith made her presence felt on the world stage in two major events in 2014.

In July at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the 20-yearold Smith narrowly missed the podium in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke, finishing in 2:25.40, just 4/10 of a second out of the bronze medal position.

“The thing I wanted most from this meet was a second swim so I was so happy to be there and I tried to enjoy it as much as I could,” said Smith. “It gave me a lot of confidence to know that I can compete with the girls here and I could belong at a senior meet

O’Neill, also a member of the Okanagan Athletics Club, capped off the year in style, winning the

gold medal in the girls 800 metre event at the International Children’s Games in Australia.

“She’s talented with lots of ability and dedicated to her training,” Okanagan Athletics Club coach Nathan Reiter said of O’Neill. “She performs well at big competitions, and when the countdown to each race is on, she’s ready to go out and execute the plan.”

All-Canadian Robbie Yochim’s outstanding year returning kicks helped lead the Okanagan Sun to a 9-and1 regular season record.

As individual performances on the junior gridiron go, few were as memorable as the one turned in by Robbie Yochim in 2014.

The Okanagan Sun veteran assaulted the B.C. and Canadian junior football league record books with his kick and punt returning prowess, while also leading his club in interceptions in the defensive secondary.

A school with a strong tradition of competitive sports teams, 2014 was a superlatively successful year in athletics for the Immaculata Mustangs.

Mustangs teams won four B.C. School Sports championships, while claiming silver medals in two other sports.

On the hardwood, the Mustangs senior girls basketball team won its second straight provincial A title.

Immaculata defeated the rival Kelowna Christian Knights 69-49 in the provincial final in Lumby.

“They are just a fantastic group that carried the No. 1 ranking all year and took care of business in the finals,” said Mustangs coach Dino Gini.

Turner’s 10-event score of 7,408 points was 23 better than Canadian rival Pat Arbour of Ottawa.

No. 1 ranked Canadian Damian Warner didn’t compete, but it wasn’t nearly enough to take the lustre off Turner’s accomplishment.

“It means a lot to win this,” said Turner, a twotime Canadian junior champ. “Since I was young, it’s always been a goal of mine to get this, I’ve been working toward it for a long time. Those junior titles were fun, now I’m glad I’ve taken the next step.”

Turner is currently in his third year with the University of Toronto Blues track team.

Training schedule key for long distance running

Running is a popular activity that can help Keeping You maintain or improve Moving your cardiovascular fitness and in some ADAM cases help you lose BERNARD weight.

There are many different reasons to run but often there is a goal set that may include five km, 10 km, half marathon or full marathon.

When training for longer runs including 10 km, half and full marathons it is important to remember that the training schedule should take place over long periods of time to allow your muscles and joints to accommodate for the increased strain that will be placed on them during the long run.

As a physiotherapist, I treat many runners with all sorts of injuries.

Some of the most common injuries include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, muscle strains, and Iliotibial band friction syndrome (IT band syndrome).

IT band syndrome is a repetitive stress injury that occurs when the iliotibial band glides over the lateral femoral condyle on the outside part of the knee.

The iliotibial band is the thick band that runs from the outside of the hip down to the outside of the knee.

It is a common injury for long distance runners (20 to 40 miles/week) but is not limited to only long distance runners.

Running on various terrains can increase the risk of developing this condition. Up and down hills, graded slopes, and cambered roads have all been shown to increase the risk.

This syndrome may also be found in other athletes or weekend warriors such as cyclists, weight lifters, and participants in jumping sports.

With IT band syndrome there is rarely a history of trauma. Patients will often complain of knee pain that may be difficult to localize and usually increases

with repetitive motions like running.

The symptoms usually get worse with changes in training surfaces, increasing mileage, or training on crowned roads.

Studies have found that long distance runners with IT band syndrome have weaker hip abductor and glut muscles on the involved leg compared to the uninvolved leg.

The hip abductor muscles are located on the outside part of the hip and help prevent the leg from moving towards the centre of the body.

It is also noted that fatigued runners are more prone to having their hip adduct (move towards the centre) and internally rotate (leg turns inwards) which causes more friction on the iliotibial band and therefore the symptoms get worse.

The management of IT band syndrome usually includes: 1) activity modification (usually decreasing mileage); 2) new running shoes replaced about every 500 km; 3) heat or ice; 4) stretching the IT band; 5) strengthening the hip abductors and glut muscles.

If you are interested in pursuing long distance running you should: 1) follow a certified training schedule; 2) make sure the shoes you are wearing are the right shoes for you; 3) increase your mileage slowly to allow your body to accommodate for the increased strain; 4) hit the gym as muscle weakness can cause problems down the road; 5) go in for an assessment with a health care professional if you start to experience aches and pains that aren’t going away.

LENNO, Italy—Silvia Givera is standing on the picturesque bank of Lake Como. She winds up, underhand, to throw a tennis ball to her dog Diego. The dog stands transfixed until the ball sails far out into the lake, and then he happily swims after it.

He brings it back but is reluctant to return it to Givera. Eventually she gets the ball and the two walk back to Bar il Golfo in town. She helps run this place, which serves traditional Italian fare. The view of the lake is stunning from the restaurant, and it’s hard

to fathom spending every day surrounded by such beauty.

I had just stepped off a water taxi after visiting the amazing topiary gardens of Villa Balbianello and walked past Bar il Golfo on my way to meet my family, in Italy on a parallel trip.

While I took 32 people through the gardens of Venice, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, my family used Como as its base to explore Switzerland, the towns around the lake and, most important, connect with relatives near the Austrian border.

When we met in Lenno, my family had already walked more than two miles from the

Grand Hotel Tremezzo on the Greenway del lago di Como (Lake Como Greenway). It’s a 10-kilometer trail, a little more than six miles, that winds through neighbourhoods and small towns from Cadenabbia south to Colonno in this part of northern Italy.

Of all the remarkable things I saw on my 10day trip in September, this was one of my most treasured memories.

People always say to get off the beaten path while visiting Italy, and it paid off for us in every way.

LAKE COMO FROM A21 the trail.

We started our walk by a couple of small restaurants and behind industrial businesses.

Our first surprise was a rocky slope filled with pink begonias cascading down a rock wall. The second was the sight of a beautiful maid working inside a home. Once we tore our son away, we were back on our hike.

Before long, we stumbled onto a little lakeside boat launch several yards off the trail.

The lake was calm, and we stood there for a few minutes to soak in another sweet view of the water and surrounding hills.

We continued through narrow cobblestone pathways flanked by stone walls punctuated by open shutters and window boxes filled with geraniums, ferns and other plants.

As we rounded a corner in Ossuccio we were struck by an odd looking home, filled with art and a sign saying “free entrance.” I wasn’t sure about going in, but my son led the way.

As we opened the door, Felippo Salice sat watching television.

He rose and greeted us with a great smile. His home was filled with a cornucopia of odd treasures for sale. He didn’t speak English, but my wife, Cindy, is pretty good with Italian, and they were able to communicate. The walls were filled with photos of him as a young man, with other family members and even walking in a church processional.

After we talked for a while, Salice opened another door, which led to even more interesting items. My wife bought an old crucifix from 1950, and I purchased a crazylooking little bronze face, which might have been at the front of someone’s home. As we bid Salice goodbye; we felt we had experienced something interesting and special.

We crossed a street and eventually came upon the faded frescos of San Giacomo, a church that dates to at least the 11th century. As we looked around the outside we were treated to another spectacular view of the lake. Standing on a narrow, overhanging

walkway we could see big fish swimming at the bottom through the crystal clear water.

The trail ascended and as we climbed we passed an abandoned estate, where we briefly had an “Under the Tuscan Sun” moment.

We thought better, though, of following in the Frances Mayes character’s footsteps and renovating an old villa.

We took a breather at a small, cool waterfall that meandered. There were warm greenish purple figs hanging from trees for tasty snacks.

As we reached the summit and began to descend, we were greeted with a hardto-beat view of the bell tower of Chiesa di Sant’Andrea in Sala Comacina.

I always recall George Clooney’s comments about Lake Como and why he chose to live here.

One day he watched as workmen headed for home singing, each with a lunch pail and bottle of wine in hand.

As we approached two men pouring concrete one whistled a tune as he worked on a modest trailside home.

All of Italy’s charm embodied in one sweet smile

One of the most interesting things on the hike was a stop at the home of Felippo Salice in Ossuccio, Italy.

The odd-looking home was filled with unique art and a sign saying “free entrance.” went, stopping to peer around curves, running to the next safe spot. We found what we needed at Enoteca Wine Bar. Alessandra Carminati was preparing the bar for patrons and was happy to allow us in for a bathroom break and point my wife in the direction of the ferry stop.

wife was able to ascertain that there was no ferry going north to Tremezzo where they were staying and only one more going south to my hotel in Moltrasio.

They learned of a bus headed north, and we parted ways. Since I had 1 1/2 hours to kill before my ferry, I headed back to the Enoteca bar, where Carminati poured me a large beer and made me a nice plate of meat and cheese.

As we talked, she told

me of her love of Italy.

How she lived out of the country for a time but longed to return home.

She wondered what I thought of Italy, and when I told her of my unending love for the country she flashed a sweet smile and opened up, telling me where all the food on my plate came from.

“The cow cheese is from up there,” she gestured toward a steep hill. Each bite was better than the last, and as she

poured me another beer, one of her friends stuck in traffic yelled and waved to her through the open front door. “Alessandra,” he screamed, which made her smile again. Her grandmother came in to sit for a bit and then her grandfather, who runs the nearby Grand Hotel Victoria. Another friend came in for a small beer and some cheese.

The two of us talked for 45 minutes—about tourists, food and her long journey on a bike to and from work each day.

Despite our brief time together, we connected in the way that’s hard to explain. In another life, we’d be friends.

It’s one of the beautiful things about traveling, stumbling upon a person and place like this.

“Will I see you again, maybe next year?” she asked. I didn’t have the heart to tell her we’d probably never meet again.

As the ferry slowly crossed the lake, I thought of Carminati and how her kindness had saved us that day. I couldn’t get her sweet smile out of my head. It embodied what Italy is all about.

BRLECIC JURAJ (GEORGE) Brlecic, Juraj (George) passed away on Sunday morning December 28th, 2014 with the love of his family around him. He had a great passion for life and because of this he fought wholeheartedly to live, but his brief illness with cancer overcame him. George was born in Marija Bistrica, Croatia. He loved his family so much and had a very strong work ethic. George loved the outdoors for fishing, hunting, mushroom picking and working around his home tending to his wine grapes and yard. He also loved music and people.

After spending 2 years in Paris, France; George came to Canada in 1967 to apply his trade as a painter, then worked as a Longshoreman for over 30 years with ILWU local 505.

In addition to this, he had his own log salvage business working as a beachcomber. But beyond this he was a man of many talents that took great care and pride in everything he did and always a man of his word. He was admired and inspired by many.

George is survived by his loving wife Barica (Barbara) of 41 years; son George of Kamloops, daughter Marian of Victoria and son Chris (Laura) of Vancouver; brother Ivan (Esperanza) of Courtney, BC; sister Gabriella of Croatia; numerous nephews and nieces and extended family in Croatia, Germany and the USA. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday January 3rd, 2015 at 2:00 pm at St Theresa’s Catholic Church 750 Rutland Rd N Kelowna, BC, with Father Louie Jimenez as Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1589 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5V7 A special thank you to Dr. Bobyn and to our Palliative Care Team (Jody, Christine, Shiela, Kathleen and Racheal) for their exceptional care during George’s illness.

Passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2014 in Kelowna, BC. Allan is survived by his two sons, Chris (Karen) and Michael; his five grandchildren, Ben, Max, Rosa, Tyson and Tru. He is also survived by siblings, Phyllis, Lorri and Nadine.

Allan was a gentle, ethical, humorous and patient man. Never one to take a back seat to life, he was an adventurous risk-taker and had many outrageous tales to tell, especially from his youth growing up in Summerland, BC, as an adult in Northern BC and two extended VW van tours through Europe, Africa and the Middle East. For 13 years he was co-owner of Fabbi Auto Parts in West Kelowna and enjoyed connecting with people over the parts counter. He was an avid hiker, cyclist, biker and was active in the Kelowna Folk Club and was the creator of the “Eclecticsans Electric” concert series. Thanks to the Apple Grove staff at Brandt’s Creek Mews, Karla’s Kare and the Chatsworth who were a great support in the last years of Allan’s life. Individual donations can be made in Allan’s memory to “Plan Canada” in lieu of flowers. He was generous, kind and loved by many. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 at Everden Rust Funeral Services, 1910 Windsor Rd, Kelowna. MCCRADY (NEE CLARKE): PHYLLIS MAE With family by her side, Molly passed away peacefully at Kelowna General Hospital on December 23, 2014, at the age of 88 years. Born Molly Risbridger on April 16, 1926, in Guildford, Surrey, England. Molly was a war bride, arriving in Halifax, NS (Pier 21) aboard the Lady Rodney, in Nov. 1946. She immediately became a cherished and respected member of her new extended family. She will be forever remembered by her husband of 69 years, Kenneth Lloyd ‘Ken’ Maxted (Kelowna) and their children, Julie Maxted/Murchison (Norm) Ottawa, Glenn ‘Max’ Santiago, MX, Ron (Jaclyn) Calgary, Patricia Shevchuk (Dave) Kelowna, and her brother Robin (Jennifer) England. Molly’s beautiful sole also embraced stepson Alan Casey (Cathy) Port Alberni, and special daughter-in-law, Sharon Maxted, Kelowna , Proud Nan/Nanny to 16 grandchildren and loving Great Nan to 15 great-grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by longtime friends Marg Prowse (Kelowna) and family, Andy, Margaret, Steven Clements (Peachland), as well as numerous friends, nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, England and Australia. Molly loved deeply and lived simply. She enjoyed camping in the Yukon, their garden on Longhill Road, Kelowna and their peaceful home on the mountain in Peachland. In 2012, Molly and Ken returned to Kelowna to reside at Chatsworth Senior Home. Molly especially treasured times spent with those dearest to her, her family and friends. Her keen interest in people and her excellent memory for names, birthdates and life events meant that she was instrumental in keeping their large family connected. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Lynn Reynolds, Chatsworth Residence staff, Home Instead Senior Care and KGH staff for the care and comfort provided to our Mother. As per Molly’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
