RCMP NOTES

Traffic violation results in impaired driving charges being laid December 13 2:29 p.m. – RCMP were called to the pier in Sylvan Lake after reports that a male appeared to be lying on the ice. A male was located by police sitting on the ice with an auger. He advised police that he was drilling through the ice so that he could ice

fish. The male was determined not to be in any danger.

10:49 p.m. – A 911 call was received by RCMP dispatch of an intoxicated male lying on the ground in the area of Beju Industrial Drive in Sylvan Lake. The 30-year-old male, a resident of Calgary, was

RCMP talked to hotel staff and the male was confirmed to have a room at the establishment. He was escorted to his room after it was determined that he did not require medical assistance.

December 14 1:55 a.m. – A domestic dispute at a residence on Old Boomer Road resulted in police attendance. A female contacted police advising that a woman appeared at her home and requested that police be called as she was assaulted by her boyfriend. RCMP questioned both parties and determined that a physical altercation took place resulting in injuries to a 23-year-old male. The 24-yearold female was not injured. Further investigation resulted in a charge of assault against the female.

Alcohol was a factor in the incident.

9:52 a.m. – RCMP are investigating break-ins to vehicles in the condo parking lot at a complex on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake. One vehicle was entered into with a garage door opener stolen. A cell phone was taken from another vehicle and a bicycle was also stolen.

10:46 p.m. – A 911 call regarding a break and enter suspect resulted in police arresting a 41-yearold male. The male was being subdued by residents in the area of Ralston Place after a home-

owner witnessed the male breaking into his vehicle. A scuffle ensued between the parties until police arrived and took the suspect into custody. The male, a resident of Trochu, is facing charges including theft under $5,000.

11:30 p.m. – A checkstop being conducted by Sylvan Lake RCMP resulted in charges being laid against a motorist. A 26-year-old male was questioned after a strong smell of marijuana was detected in his vehicle. The male admitted to drug use and a search of the vehicle resulted in a quantity of marijuana being seized. The male was subsequently charged with possession of marijuana and having liquor within easy reach of the occupant. The male was also issued a 24-hour suspension. The vehicle was towed at the scene.

December 15 1:36 p.m. – A routine patrol by RCMP members resulted in impaired driving charges being laid against a Sylvan Lake resident. A vehicle driver was stopped for a traffic violation on 43rd Street at 47th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The driver exhibited signs of impairment resulting in a roadside screening device being utilized. A 24-year-old male is charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over. 08.

Support being sought for Filipino crash victims’ families STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Filipino migrant group is calling for support for the families of three Filipinos killed in a crash near Sylvan Lake last month.

Ruben Deogracias, 34, Blesilda ‘Blessie’ Capule Orbigo, 28, and Napoleon Orbigo, 29, were killed when their car collided with a five-ton moving truck on Highway 11 near Range Road 4-2 west of Sylvan Lake on Dec. 13.

In the wake of their deaths, the Philippine government offered condolences, but did not provide repatriation assistance or financial support for victims of the crash and their families, say members of Migrante Alberta.

The group is now demanding the Philippine government take action and provide the services it says its consular offices are responsible for.

“Services such as repatriation are a basic service that the Philippine government must provide for everyone as part of its service to nationals,” said Cynthia Palmaria of Migrante Alberta

Migrante Alberta says members of the public have offered donations to help repatriate the crash victims’ bodies. The group is seeking further financial assistance to support the victims’ families in the Philippines.

The three deceased were on their way home to Rocky Mountain House at the time of the crash, having just finished a language training session in Red Deer.

Another man in the car was airlifted

by STARS Air Ambulance to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton in critical condition, and is still recuperating from his injuries.

Two of the victims — Napoleon and Blessie — were newlyweds, having gotten married to each other in September.

Clinging to such unrealistic expectations is completely naïve of course, but perhaps it is not out of the realm of idealism to hope for tiny increments of positive change in the new year.

The longest journey begins with a single step, and 2015 offers an opportunity to each and every one of us to take that first step to begin our own personal journey towards whatever destination we chose.

I personally plan on squeezing in some sort of nap before I begin the journey, again.

Trust me, I’m all about making good and positive changes, but I know I will need lots of energy to do so.

A nap is a good first step, I’m thinking.

And then I will be ready.

I truly believe it is good to stand in the wings of a new year that is about to unfold, and reach for limits that are, no doubt, realistically unattainable, but possible.

Even as I write this, imagining the strict regime such resolutions involve, I am fairly confident none of the above will happen.

Life will no doubt get in the way and I will fall short of the mark I have set for myself, thereby being all discouraged and ready to quit.

That’s when it’s important to get up and start over, or simply go to Plan B. Delete resolution!

But still, with 2015 an embryo waiting to be born, even with my unfailing track record of incompletion, I am ready to start anew with a fresh list.

And being an eternal optimist, I just keep looking up, which is good because on a clear night in late

December, the timeless beauty of the constellations and the stars cut the night sky into a jagged patchwork of perfection.

And once again l am reminded by the majestic beauty of the night sky that some things such as optimism, hope and New Year’s resolutions are meant to live forever.

And always there will be unexplained beauty, quiet moments of unexpected perfection and even the odd New Year’s resolution that actually gets kept.

So may you all have the best new year ever, and may you all make and keep your own New Year’s resolutions.

Good luck with that!

Wildrose defections a display of greed and treachery Dear Editor, Prostitution is thriving in Alberta. And Danielle Smith is its prim and proper egomaniac pimp.

The en masse Wild Rose traipse across the floor at the legislature to join the governing PCs is not only infuriating, but also a monumental travesty of trust. It slaps each and every one of us in the face. It pukes on our political system. It’s gutless. It borders on treason.

Over 400,000 Albertans have been lied to and betrayed. Smith could sleep comfortably in a grain auger, the snake! She slithered out from under the same rock as Alison Redfraud!

It also speaks volumes of Jim Prentice that he gladly takes such a disgracefully disloyal person as Smith and her cronies into his caucus. A man of integrity would have had nothing to do with this sham. Shame, shame, shame on them all.

It’s all about the power, pension and paycheques. These people will do anything to hedge their bets. It’s about ensuring a very good position at the trough; no morals, no scruples, just a bunch of rats abandoning ship.

It’s not a defection. It’s betrayal, with a capital B. If WR voters can get over the pain of this knife in

the back, they will see this is as it really is, a disgusting display of greed and treachery.

And yes, this included you, Kerry Towle, who defected earlier and in doing so thoroughly abused those Innisfailians who supported you with their pocket books and countless hours of volunteer work.

Was Smith really devastated and betrayed by Towle a couple weeks back, or just annoyed Towle beat her across the aisle? Seeing as Smith was already negotiating with the PCs, would it be rude to suggest the latter?

The disgusting display of zero ethics by a band of hypocritical opportunists is an immoral, outright lie to the electorate, somewhat surprising when one considers their holier-than-thou rhetoric spewed during the election campaign.

They should resign and allow us to go to polls.

Many Albertans voted WR as a last resort. The real travesty here is there are no regards for the electorate. We are meaningless pawns.

Do you still wonder why we get voter turnouts of about 30 per cent in this province? Democracy?

Highly unlikely. More like debauchery.

There should be a way to launch a class action

lawsuit for breach of trust, not to mention their outright theft of the democratic process from the populace. And there should also be legislation enacted to prevent this betrayal by our own little Tea Party from EVER happening again. There needs to be a mechanism that bounds the person to the party and the constituents that elected that person. No floor crossing. No get-out-of-jail-free cards.

And the resulting by-elections should be conducted at the expense of those who intended to cross the floor. Was it not taxpayers’ dollars which funded election costs in the first place? Why did we even bother with an election if, when the governing PCs have all the toys, the opposition just trots on over to their side of the sandbox.

Give up and resign if you must — but defect?

Pathetic.

If we were in a third-world country, people would be taking up arms. Let’s get off our asses and demand democracy be respected.

They have made a mockery of the right to vote.

Expel each and every one of them.

Road conditions a factor in fatal crash near Rimbey STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Police say road conditions were a factor in a two-vehicle collision that killed three people south of Rimbey Dec. 21.

Police were called to the scene of a serious collision on Highway 20 near Township Road 420 around 1 p.m., where investigation revealed a northbound car crossed the centre line and collided with a southbound

SUV. The lone male occupant of the car was pronounced dead on scene. The SUV was carrying a Rimbey-area family of five. One of its child occupants was also pronounced dead on scene, while another child later died at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Other occupants of the SUV were taken to hospital in Red Deer to be treated for serious injuries.

Police on Dec. 22 confirmed that road conditions played a role in the crash.

A charge of the receptacle cost or upgrade, plus 15% which includes delivery, shall be applied to a new qualifying utility account; but does not include the replacement of a receptacle for warranty work or general wear, for which there is no charge.

Residential Green Box Recycling Rate: $6.10 per month per residence Commercial Properties: As subject to this bylaw, commercial properties receiving Green Box recycling service shall pay: Billing amount = Base Rate times the number of units.

Cardboard Drop-Off Recycle Service Base Rate: $7.00 per business per month.

1. The replacement of Schedule “B” in its entirety with: Waste Disposal Fees a. Residential waste customers of the Town of Sylvan Lake delivering waste to the Waste Transfer Site will be charged a fee of $0.08 per kilogram ($80.00 per tonne) for the disposal. b. Any non-residential waste utility customer delivering waste to the Waste Transfer Site will be charged a fee of $0.136 per kilogram ($136.00 per tonne) for the disposal. c. A minimum charge of $5.00 per load will be applied to all deliveries to the Waste Transfer Site of non-recyclable material.

Highway crash claims life of Sylvan Lake man STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Sylvan Lake man is dead following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 11A between Sylvan Lake and Red Deer Dec. 17.

Blackfalds RCMP and Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit officers responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m., where they determined that an eastbound van collided with a westbound one-ton pickup truck.

Police say the van was travelling at a high speed when its driver lost control of the vehicle before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with the truck.

The van driver, a 51-year-old Sylvan Lake man, was pronounced dead on scene. At the request of his family, his name is not being released.

The truck’s occupants were released from hospital after being treated for minor injuries.

The collision caused traffic to be re-routed around the scene for about four hours while RCMP investigated.

At press time, police said they weren’t sure whether alcohol may have been a factor.

“That is the fellowship that has developed over the last 55 years.”

While the Royal Purple is no longer represented in Benalto, volunteerism in the area remains very much alive and well, Austin feels.

And the future looks bright.

“We have managed to do a lot of the banquets and catering stuff because of the young people coming to help us,” said Austin. “Those kids are beautiful young Canadian citizens. They are very, very helpful, and because of them, we have been able to do the work that we have accomplished the last few years.”

For that reason, Austin said she wouldn’t be surprised to see another Royal Purple group, or a different volunteering-based group, emerge locally in the future.

The Benalto lodge’s last gettogether was a Christmas party held in December and attended by its last active members as well as members of other Royal Purple lodges in the area.

The beginning of the new year marked the end of a local organization with a long, illustrious history of helping others in need.

The Royal Purple of Canada’s Benalto Lodge #233 officially ceased operating on Dec. 31 after 55 years of existence.

With a limited and aging membership, and workloads and volunteering responsibilities remaining stagnant, the final decision was made with the utmost consideration for all involved, according to the lodge’s Honoured Royal Lady Carol Austin.

“We’ve watched it coming for about the last five years as it dwindled and dwindled,” she said. “It was not an easy decision.”

The Benalto lodge’s five active members at the time of dissolution were between the ages of 75 and 90, and hailed from various area municipalities, including Sylvan Lake, Eckville and Red Deer.

They, along with other members throughout the years, dedicated much time and energy into supporting deaf detection and stuttering, and many community groups, organizations, charities and events.

Behind them, they leave a proud legacy — one Austin is happy to have been a part of since joining 53 years ago.

“We tried to support everything within the community and surrounding area that we could,” she said. “I feel very, very proud of what those ladies put into the organization. They have worked together and done a beautiful job of it.”

A Sylvan Lake business had extra reason to celebrate over the holidays, having recently been announced as a finalist for a province-wide business award.

Alberta Chambers of Commerce last month named Clearview Glass Service as one of five businesses up for the Alberta Small Business Award of Distinction, which will be presented at a gala dinner in Edmonton Feb. 27.

Owner Len Campbell described the nod as “an honour.” Strong support from the community, he feels, has played an integral part in his business’s success since opening 12 years ago.

“Customer service and ‘keeping it local’ has always been our philosophy, and we remain proud to be a member of the community,” he said in a release. “It’s been an honour serving the Central Alberta community over the years.”

The family-owned and -operated business specializes in new and replacement glass for homes, businesses and vehicles. Campbell said his staff have a combined industry experience of over 100 years.

Clearview is the only Central Alberta business up for the award. Other finalists are based in Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie and Lloydminster.

Poster winners STUART FULLARTON

Students’ artistic and literary abilities celebrated at Legion STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Some of the area’s most creative young minds were commended for their remembrance-focused works on Dec. 18, when they were presented as winners of the Legion’s Poster and Literary Contests.

A ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion Sylvan Lake saw students from Sylvan Lake and area awarded certificates for the Remembrance Day contests, which were divided into various categories.

Stunning, powerful and amazing are just some of the adjectives Poppy Chair and contests organizer Sharon Graham used to describe the works produced. The winning entries, she feels, were fully deserving of their awards.

“We have so much talent in this area,” she said. “Entries are judged professionally,

so for them to win having that level of judging, they obviously are very good.”

Support from teachers is integral to the contests’ success, she added, and helps students pay tribute to Canada’s war dead through their work.

“We have some teachers in the area that are very good at encouraging the children to do these posters and literary entries,” she said. “It’s good for us to get those entries, but it’s good for all those students to remember. While they’re doing all this, they are remembering, and it means something to them.”

Winning entries from the Sylvan Lake branch will now be judged at the area level, with the chance to progress further to district and provincial levels.

A local Grade 2 student was a provincial winner last year, and Graham feels some of this year’s winners also have the potential to go all the way.

A number of works from this year’s contests will be displayed at the Sylvan Lake Legion throughout the month of November.

Sylvan Lake native returns to the Milestones ice for the first time in years JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A native of Sylvan Lake received an early Christmas present when he was presented a pair of size 15 skates, enabling him to skate for the first time in years.

Steven Dale, a 26-year-old Canadian Armed Forces combat engineer, was surprised with the skates prior to public skating at the Sylvan Lake Multiplex on Dec. 21, when he took to the ice for the first time in nearly 10 years.

He described his first outing back as “outstanding.”

“It’s been a long time,” he said.

Dale’s journey back onto the ice was a long one, and began during the town’s Kraft Hockeyville celebrations last year. At that time, family friend Alanna Dextrase approached the NHL to request help finding skates for Dale.

“His feet are so big that you just don’t get normal skates for a guy that size at the store and you have to get them customized,” said Dextrase. Doing so, she added, could cost upwards of $2,500.

But NHL linesman Mike Cvik ensured it didn’t come to that, and donated a pair of his own used skates that he knew would fit Dale.

Dextrase said Cvik was more than happy to help when he heard Dale’s story.

“Mike was surprised of the size, because not many people have feet that size,” said Dextrase. “He’s a very nice man.”

Cvik said he knows all too well how difficult it is to find such large skates, and didn’t think twice about sending Dale a pair of his own.

“It’s nice to be able to help someone out like this,” he said. “I understand how expensive it is for custom-made skates.

first time, Dale stepped onto the ice confidently, beaming with passion as he glided around accompanied by wife Nadine.

He instantly commented on the skates’ comfort, and noted skating is like riding a bike: once you learn how to do it, you never forget.

Having grown up in Sylvan Lake, Dale now lives in Edmonton. Owning a pair of comfortably-fitting skates, he feels, will allow him to enjoy quality time on the ice with his family, and take part in other activities previously unavailable to him.

“At work, we have a (hockey) team, and now I can play with them, finally,” he said. “I never could before.”

Once again, I had a free evening.

My son and I helped set up the crèche displays to celebrate Christmas. We also pulled out the Wii. We have not used it for months. I played hard and can feel a muscle in my right arm — it is like it hasn’t been used in a long time. I guess a little pain is what I need to pay to be successful at a game. I hope it doesn’t affect me tomorrow.

As a family, we watched a live Nativity, with a real donkey, but a doll for the baby (it was below freezing).

I was talking to a friend about recycling the other day, and it is an interesting fact that if you take a product down to its base ele-

ments, you can rebuild it up to the same product. So, if you have the same ingredients you get the same result. Hmmm.

Did I mention that there was a live donkey tonight?

Dec. 18 after a 4-3 loss to the Sharks: Dear Edmonton Oilers, Once again I see that you finished second. You know that this isn’t a marathon where second is pretty good, right?

Tonight we wrapped presents for teachers, and some of our teenager’s friends stopped by for a visit. It was nice.

A friend told me that oil was down; not sure if he was talking the blue and orange or black gold.

Yes, oil is down, but not just the NEP circa Trudeau and Lalonde of 1980, the Oil of Edmonton as well.
