At least one person was taken to hospital, treated for exposure to pepper spray, after a home invasion in Langley City on Monday morning (Dec. 29).

Around 9 a.m., Langley RCMP and the police dog service were called to a home in the area of 52 Avenue and 201A Street, after two male suspects broke into the home and used pepper spray against the victim or victims.

Police say the people

in the residence are known to police and the crime is believed to be drug-related.

The suspects fled and numerous officers and a police dog services searched the area, including Linwood Park. But no suspects were found during that search.

Police initially asked people in the area to stay inside to help facilitate the tracking process.

A woman is taken to hospotal following a home invasion on 201A Street in Langley City on Monday morning. Police believe the incident was drug-related. Police dogs searched for two men, but were unable to track them down.

Guilty plea in thefts

Derek Sean Hall, 32, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and theft in connection with a stolen bulldozer, trailer and used truck.

The Langley resident is expected to be sentenced on Jan. 15, 2015, in Surrey Provincial Court.

The investigation and charges stem from incidents involving Hall and his co-accused Roelof Den Dryver. The pair

lived on a property in the 6600 block of 256 Street, where the stolen equipment was located.

Den Dryver was given an 18-month conditional sentence for stealing a brand new Dodge pickup during a test drive and falsely reporting he was carjacked. In a trial, Den Dryver was found guilty of theft over $5,000, stolen property over $5,000 and reporting a crime that was false.

He was acquitted on a charge of assaulting a police officer.

A thief who stole a Langley resident’s credit card managed to make more than $16,000 in purchases while also trying to take money from the victim’s bank account.

Police spoke with the victim who said the credit card had been stolen from a post office. Since the culprit took the credit card, the suspect had attempted to make third party transfers from the victim’s bank account and rack up $16,000 in purchases.

A small non-commercial poultry operation in Aldergrove has become the latest victim of an avian flu outbreak in the Fraser Valley.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported all 85 birds at the Aldergrove location were destroyed.

It is the first case of avian flu to affect a non-commercial poultry operation since the outbreak was first reported on Dec. 1.

Since the H5N2 virus was detected at a broiler/breeder farm in Chilliwack and a turkey farm in Abbotsford, a total of 12 sites have been affected and more than 240,000 birds have been killed with carbon dioxide gas and then composted in a bid to keep the deadly virus from spreading.

Besides the Aldergrove outbreak, there have been two other cases in the Langley area, resulting in the destruction of 53,000 table egg layers at one farm and 11,800 broilers/breeders at another.

The H5N2 bird flu virus is described as a Eurasian-North American Hybrid that is especially deadly to birds.

It’s the first time this type of avian flu virus has been seen in North America.

“The appearance of this particular reassortant (genetic material from two or more viruses) virus is significant due to its ability to cause high mortality in domestic poultry,” a CFIA statement said.

The virus has been detected in wild birds, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which has reported the H5N2 strain was detected in northern pintail ducks just across the border in Lynden, Wash.

The USDA also reported a different strain of avian flu was discovered in a Oregon backyard poultry flock.

On Tuesday, the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) banned Canadian birds and bird products originating in or transiting through the control zone in B.C. from crossing the border.

The ban covers uncooked chicken, turkey, duck, or goose; raw eggs; live birds; hatching eggs; composted manure; and meat from hunter-harvested birds.

Pet birds must have APHIS-approved health certificates and will be required to spend 30 days in quarantine.

2014 – year of overpasses and overcrowded schools In September, the last of three Langley-Surrey overpasses officially opened.

The $51 million Mufford overpass project was part of a $307 million plan to build eight overpasses and one railway siding along the 70-km stretch that connects Roberts Bank, with Canada’s largest container port (Deltaport) and coal terminal (Westshore), to the North American railway network.

Currently, the rail tracks carry up to 18 trains per day, many of them more than two kilometres long.

Rail traffic is expected to increase to 28 to 38 trains a day by 2021.

••• The problem of overcrowded schools continued to dominate education news in 2014.

The news was not promising, with word that there would likely be no money for a new high school in the rapidly-growing Willoughby neighborhood.

Langley school district secretary-treasurer David Green reported the provincial education ministry sent a letter in July, telling school boards to stop submitting five-year capital construction funding plans.

The ministry now requires school districts to fund nearly 50 per cent of any new school project, making it nearly impossible for Langley, which has about $4 million to contribute to a new high school that would cost around $30 million.

School trustees were warned without a new school, students will likely have to be bused to another school zone, to Langley Secondary or as far away as Aldergrove.

Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman wrote The Times to insist there will be funding for a new Willoughby high school “once a proper business case can be made” adding “the project is very much active.”

In sports, professional lacrosse played its first season at the Langley Events Centre, while both Langleys hosted the very last B.C. Seniors Games.

The four-day seniors event brought more than 3,800 athletes ranging in age from 55 to 97 from all around the province to the Township and the City.

At the closing ceremonies, organizers revealed the annual event will henceforth be known as the “55+ Games.”

The next games will be held in 2015 in North Vancouver.

This was the year that the pro

lacrosse Stealth moved from Everett, Wash. to the Langley Events Centre (LEC).

The Vancouver Stealth, under the same ownership group, management team and with the bulk of the same players, began the 2014 National Lacrosse League season at the LEC in January.

The team has signed a fiveyear agreement to call the LEC home with the option of two five-year extensions.

The Stealth become the fourth Canadian team, joining Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto.

New look for the Langleys 2014 ELECTION SAW COUNCIL MEMBERS COME AND GO AT BOTH CITY AND TOWNSHIP TABLES There was plenty of change in the makeup of the three local government bodies, after ballots were cast in the Nov. 15 municipal election.

In addition, voter turnout improved in both Langley City and Langley Township, although more than two-thirds of eligible voters did not vote in the Township, and more than three-quarters avoided voting in the City.

Several citizens’ groups mounted campaigns against a number of incumbents in the Township, and three incumbent councillors lost their seats — Grant Ward, Steve Ferguson and Bev Dornan.

Taking their place on council are newcomers Blair Whitmarsh, Angie Quaale and Petrina Arnason.

They join Mayor Jack Froese, who was easily re-elected over two challengers, and incumbent Councillors Charlie Fox, David Davis, Michelle Sparrow, Kim Richter and Bob Long.

In Langley City, there were three open seats on council, as a result of Ted Schaffer being named acting mayor after the resignation of Peter Fassbender, and the decision of Teri James and Rosemary Wallace not to seek re-election.

Angie Quaale was among three newcomers to win seats at the Langley Township Council table along with Blair Whitmarsh and Petrina Arnason. Longtime councillors Steve Ferguson and Grant Ward lost their seats, as did two-term member Bev Dornan.

Rudy Storteboom (who served between 2008 and 2011), Paul Albrecht and Val van den Broek.

They join incumbent Councillors Gayle Martin, Jack Arnold and Dave Hall.

Langley Board of Education has three new trustees. Incumbents Wendy Johnson and Cecelia Reekie did not seek re-election in the Township, opening up two seats.

Elected in the Township were incumbents Rod Ross, Alison McVeigh and Megan Dykeman.

Joining them are newcomers Rosemary Wallace (who moved over from Langley City council) and David Tod. In Langley City, Rob McFarlane was re-elected, and newcomer Shelley Coburn edged out incumbent trustee Candy Ashdown.

The two councils and board of education will be the first to serve four-year terms.

The next municipal elections in B.C. will be held in November, 2018.

The man being sued over an unclaimed $50 million lottery ticket says he doesn’t have it.

Dalbir Sidhu has been taken to court by Gayleen Rose Elliott, who is convinced that Sidhu, a co-worker who was responsible for buying tickets for a workplace lottery pool, has the winning March 14 Lotto Max ticket that was sold in Langley and is trying to avoid sharing the winnings.

Elliott filed her notice of civil claim in the Vancouver B.C. Supreme Court registry on

Dec. 1.

In his response, filed on Dec. 19, Sidhu says he forgot to buy the tickets on March 14 but “mistakenly believed he did purchase the … tickets at a gas station in Surrey …” and didn’t realize his mistake until Elliott asked about the purchase after the $50 million March 14 prize went unclaimed.

Sidhu says he has checked with the B.C. Lottery Corporation and none of the numbers the pool was playing were drawn on March 14.

He denies Elliott’s claim that

he wrongfully converted the winning ticket for his own use, denies he has any legal obligation to the pool, denies that he breached his duties and denies “having been unjustly enriched.”

Elliott’s lawyer is demanding $52 million plus interest from Sidhu, along with additional damages for fraud and breach of contract.

Sidhu’s lawyer says Elliott isn’t entitled to any damages.

Whomever bought the winning ticket has one year to claim the money.

The March 14, 2014 Lotto Max jackpot win ties the largest prize ever won in B.C. The lottery corporation says no top lottery prize on Lotto Max or Lotto 6/49 has ever gone unclaimed in B.C.

A new charge of jumping bail has been laid against one of two Canadians charged with trying to bring a meth-lab-in-a-box across the Aldergrove border crossing.

The new charge was filed against Lola Crystal McKay, 24, on Dec. 12, a week after she failed to show up for a scheduled appearance before a Whatcom County Superior Court judge in Bellingham to set a date on Dec. 5.

Court records show McKay didn’t actually post bail, but was allowed to go free on a promise to return.

However, under Washington State, law, someone “who fails to appear or who fails to surrender for service of sentence as required is guilty of bail jumping” which is a Class B Felony, which can result in a prison term of up to ten years, a fine of up to $20,000, or both.

McKay and Calum James Buchanan, 40, both from Chilliwack, were arrested at the Aldergrove border crossing on Sunday, Nov. 23 after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered what they described as a portable meth lab inside a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am. After a U.S. customs officer became nauseated and vomited after breathing fumes from some plastic wrapped storage containers in the car, the crossing was shut down in both directions for about an hour while a hazmat team removed the chemicals.

The officer, who was transported to hospital, made a full recovery.

Buchanan is scheduled to stand trial Jan. 26.

If convicted of possession of meth chemicals with intent to manufacture, the pair could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $25,000 U.S.

The municipality has unveiled a new tool that makes it easier for residents to access information about garbage and green can collection details, pick up days and service updates.

The award-winning “ReCollect” software also allows residents to

set up a handy reminder by email, text message, phone, calendar or private message through Twitter.

Simply by typing in their address, citizens can view their collection day and select when they want to receive their collection reminder (for example 6 p.m. the day before collection day, or 7 a.m. on the day of), which will also include helpful

details such as what is being picked up that week, as well as any service changes and special campaigns.

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to be more responsive to our residents’ needs,” said Rick Bomhof, the City’s director of engineering, parks and environment.

“This handy new service will provide citizens with the ability to get

information when, where and how it is most convenient for them.”

ReCollect reminders — along with a quick and easy way to check collection schedules — are available now through the City’s website at city.langley.bc.ca.

The City will continue to make printed schedules available to residents.

As the wrap-up of the past year in the news pages of The Times has shown, it was a very eventful year in Langley.

As reporter Dan Ferguson noted in the year in review story, it could be labelled “year of the backlash,” as many of the most enduring stories involved pushback.

Perhaps the most dramatic story was one that did not even involve Langley — except in the fertile minds of some members of the media. This was the case of the six dogs who were found dead in an Abbotsford ditch — but only after a frenetic week of searching for the dogs, who had supposedly gone missing at the Brookswood dog park.

In fact, dog walker Emma Paulsen wasn’t even at the dog park, nor had she taken the dogs to Langley. The dogs apparently suffocated to death in her vehicle while she was in Richmond, and she then dumped the bodies in Abbotsford. She brought Langley into the story as part of her fabrications about the event, and some members of the media continued to buy into that narrative, long after it was disproved.

The municipal elections in Langley were more meaningful than usual, and in both Langley City and Langley Township, turnout improved, although it remained at very low levels. Most people voted for things “to remain” as it by not voting or participating in any way.

The push by Langley Township council for a new community plan for Brookswood was resisted vigorously, and although the plan was defeated, the whole process led to significant attempts to get rid of several members of council. There was significant success on that front — three of the five specifically targeted by several groups lost their sets. However, Mayor Jack Froese (who was targeted as well) was an easy winner. His quiet but determined approach to his job won support from most voters.

In Langley City, several vacancies led to a significantly new look for council, and acting mayor Ted Schaffer earned the title by winning election decisively.

MP Mark Warawa was part of one of the biggest national stories of the year — the storming of Parliament by a gunman who was short and killed by Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers in October. Warawa and most other MPs were locked down in caucus rooms and other offices for hours, until it was deteremined there were no more gunmen.

Rampant growth in Willoughby, which was a subtext in the Brookswood discussions, became more of an issue when it was revealed that a new high school in the area is

Drivers in Port Alberni aren’t getting the message when it comes to impaired driving.

And that is a real worry as we enter the holiday celebratory season, when many people are on the road to visit family, both locally and on two segments of Highway 4 (east and west) that are oftentimes challenging to drive at this time of year.

In British Columbia, drunk driving is the third highest factor contributing to motor vehicle fatalities behind speed and distracted driving. This after nearly 40 years of Counter Attack impaired driving campaigns — and in the Alberni Valley, three decades of media campaigns and enforcement efforts.

We cannot fault the RCMP for these types of statistics, for they are diligently out on patrol, conducting roadside checks and pulling over suspected impaired drivers. RCMP officers are the ones making our community a little safer by pulling impaired drivers off the road.

However, they can’t do it all by themselves. We as a community must take responsibility too, and drive responsibly.

Those who do observe the law can also help by calling 9-1-1 if they suspect a driver of being impaired, or by asking someone for their car keys at a party.

Have a Merry Christmas; enjoy a fun New Year’s Eve with friends. But be responsible about how you are going to get home.

Council ignores safety Editor: There has been endless debate regarding parking along 80 Avenue. It took up much of Langley Township council’s time for most of 2014.

Ultimately, council decided against parking on 80 Avenue. The decision was influenced by a report provided by Paul Cordeiro, manager, engineering transportation, and Richard Welfing, transportation engineer.

The report stated that arterial roads such as 80 Avenue primarily provide for the movement of through traffic, not parking.

Welfing noted the nearby major transportation projects and stated that 80 Avenue plays a key transportation role within the Township of Langley. Six different options for providing parking on 80 Avenue were reviewed, and findings were that installing an option with a travel lane, time of day parking/travel lane, and a bicycle lane is not possible for a number of safety reasons.

Staff recommended maintaining the existing road configuration on 80 Avenue; considering implementation of time limited parking on 79A Avenue and 80A Avenue as an alternative, after a ballot is sent to directly affected properties and returned with a minimum of 67 per cent support; and continuing with the review and consultation of alternative options, such as two-sided parking on local roads and review of off-street parking requirements.

As a resident of Willoughby, I spoke out strongly against the proposed parking along 80 Avenue. A lot of good that did. Township council has recently covered the no parking signs along 80 Avenue for the duration of the holiday season. Council voted 7-2 in favour of permitting parking along 80 Avenue with Mayor Jack Froese and Councillor Angie Quaale the only two who were not in favour.

The majority of council consciously chose to ignore the safety issues outlined in the report. In my opinion, this issue should not have been put on the agenda. A decision was made this past fall regarding the parking, and council should abide by that ruling.

However, to appease a few homeowners and to ensure the longevity of their political careers, council voted to proceed in direct violation of its own bylaws and has now put the safety and wellbeing of the Willoughby residents in jeopardy.

Traffic along 80 Avenue has doubled over the past year. Drivers cannot see when trying to make a left hand turn onto 80 Avenue, when cars park on the side of the street. There is a major line-of-sight issue. The engineer’s report stated this. Council even used this information as a rationale to prevent implementing permanent parking along 80 Avenue. Now they are now choosing to disregard those same facts to allow holiday parking.

Council is fully aware of the safety issues associated with parking along 80 Avenue, but is still permitting it during the holiday season, thereby consciously putting peoples’ lives at risk — including pedestrians trying to cross at an incredibly busy intersection.

Township council should put aside political agendas and give the gift of safety to the residents of the Yorkson South Community.

Anti-development bias Editor: As a regular reader of your editorials and letters, I must take umbrage with what I perceive to be a decided bias in your paper. For the most part I embrace your editorial positions, both yours and that of your guest writers. What concerns me is the numerous anti-anything viewpoints you favour.

An example is the letter of John Winter (The Times, Dec. 25). It is well-written, clear and to the point. The point is so far off the mark it voids any of Winter’s concerns.

This type of letter and some editorials which are full of nothing but wild off-the-wall speculation, along with publishing baseless assumptions, does little to enhance your paper’s reputation.

Winter uses the usual scare statement without foundation, such as scarring the land for life. It is apparent Winter has absolutely no

knowledge of pipeline construction.

I too have concerns about the future of British Columbia. It is not so much for me and my wife, but for our grandchildren. How will they be able to exist above a poverty level without some form of industry contributing jobs and taxes?

Winter and the others of his ilk, who are against anything productive, would probably be happy going back to the horse and buggy days, I, for one, do not suppoprt such a step. Progress in any manner is inevitable.

All I expect from your paper is unbiased reporting and a clear statement of facts. The letter from Jimmy Polk (The Times, Dec. 25) is a refreshing breeze in a sea of anti-development dialogue.

Dangerous exit situation Editor: What is the real difference between “yielding” and “merging” in legal terms? Presumably a yielding motorist must at least slow down, but to what degree?

The reason that I am asking is that we live close to the eastbound freeway offramp on to 232 Street, which intersects with 232 Street just 35 or so metres from the 72 Avenue west intersection. I have witnessed some very close encounters, when a car exiting the freeway tries to sneak between oncoming traffic in-

stead of yielding.

Although there is a yield sign, numerous motorists will “squeeze in” between oncoming traffic on 232 Street without slowing down, and if they misjudge the gap, they endanger not only the oncoming motorist but also pedestrians walking up toward the bridge. There are numerous pedestrians like ourselves who find themselves at risk there.

Langley City mayor sets a high standard for integrity Editor: I read a recent article from Langley City council with fascination, because Mayor Ted Schaffer recused himself from both the Committee of the Whole discussion and the vote regarding the development permit.

He did so because the developer was among

his campaign contributors. What an honourably quaint concept — integrity. Wow. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our Township council could find this kind of integrity.

far from a certainty, due to new provincial requirements that a significant portion of the capital costs be paid for by the local school district. R.E. Mountain Secondary is already overcrowded, and the area urgently needs more high school space.

The importance of Langley Events Centre in attracting people and dollars from outside the community to Langley was

emphasized when the National Lacrosse League’s Vancouver Stealth became the first professional sports team ever to be based in Langley. The Stealth are now in their second season. The BC Seniors Games in September, which attracted more than 3,800 athletes, showed just how much economic activity comes into Langley from sports and athletics.

The beating of Chris Lafreneier after he

got off a bus at Langley City bus loop in November attracted a great deal of attention, and will lead to better lighting and security at the bus exchange. Thankfully, the community pitched in to make Christmas better for Lafrenier and his family.

However, many issues involving unruly bus passengers remain to be dealt with.

And the opening of all the remaining overpass projects in Langley during 2014

has offered significantly more alternatives to drivers who, in the past, have been stuck waiting for trains to pass. Still to come are advance warning signs along major Langley streets, which will alert drivers to an oncoming train and suggest alternative routes — usually involving one or more of the overpasses.

The new year will likely be just as busy and diverse as 2014 has been.

Two fires Dec. 25 and 26 cause major damage Walker said that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction, possibly due to an overloaded circuit related to a Christmas tree. The occupants were lucky to escape unharmed, he said, as the smoke alarm was not functioning, and “there easily could have been fatalities.”

The smoke alarm was not working at another fire the next day (Friday) in the 24900 block of 40 Avenue. The fire broke out in the basement, and Walker said it was

caused by an overloaded power bar. Damage to the basement area was extensive, but no one was injured, and all occupants were able to escape. The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m.

A tanker truck relay system was set up to haul water to the site, as there are no hydrants in the area. That enabled fire crews to quickly get the fire under control.

cerned to discover that smoke alarms were not working at both homes, as they are an inexpensive way to alert residents to fires. They can be lifesavers, particularly if a fire breaks out when people are asleep.

A fire that started on the stove of a Willoughby townhouse on Thursday, Dec. 11 could have done far more damage than it did, if not for the presence of a working sprinkler system.

Pat Walker, assistant fire chief with the Township fire department, said the blaze started after a pot used to sterilize rubber nipples for baby bottles was accidentally left heating on the stove when the family went out.

“They left the house and thought they had turned it off, but it boiled dry,” said Walker.

Eventually the nipples caught fire and ignited plastic components inside the stove’s hood.

The flames had also melted a cabinet door and a plastic kettle on the counter before being doused.

“It would have been a totally different scenario without the sprinkler,” said Walker.

Firefighters from halls 4, 6, and 8 responded to the blaze at the townhouse in the 8000 block of 209 Street just before 6:30 p.m. Finding no one home, crews broke a window to get inside, where they encountered heavy smoke.

“It smouldered for a long time,” said Walker.

Although it is a tough time of year to be out of their home, Walker said the family will likely be able to return in a couple of weeks, once restoration work has been completed.

Tree chipping planned for weekend The fourth annual Field’s Christmas Tree Chipping event benefits the BC Cancer Foundation.

It takes place on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

It will be at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum (Demonstration Garden) on the north side of Fraser Highway, east of 208 Street, in the 21200 block of Fraser Highway.

All proceeds support the BC Cancer Foundation.

Choir performs to help save forest An outdoor concert on Saturday is the latest step by people working to preserve the Creekside Forest in Aldergrove.

Langley Township council had earlier approved sale of the property for residential development, but in December called for another look at an arborist’s report on trees on the property, which at one time housed the Aldergrove sewer plant.

The Opus One Women’s Choir will perform the concert at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the forested area of the property. The choir is directed by Brenda Wilson.

Organized by Watchers of Langley Forests (WOLF) and Aldergrove Neighbours, it is billed as “celebrating the new year with a fond farewell to the Christmas season.”

It is a concert for the whole family and will feature a singalong and refreshments.

South Surrey artist Marilyn Dyer works on a drawing of ‘Tattoo.’ Dyer’s horse sculpture was vandalized for the second time when it was returned to a Brookswood park in 2014 after being repaired.

A story that began as a disappointing commentary on the lengths some people will go to tear down others’ achievements, was made into something positive in 2014 …. before taking another turn for the worse.

“Tattoo,” a painted fibreglass horse statue valued at $10,000, was vandalized shortly after being placed in a Brookswood park in the summer of 2013, when its head and feet were cut off.

Instead of getting angry or throwing in the towel, however, South Surrey artist Marilyn Dyer, who designed and painted Tattoo, saw an opportunity to use the tale to a denounce bullying.

Dyer collaborated on a children’s book with a Summerland writer, drawing colourful images of the horse to accompany the text. Dyer said at the time, she hoped the book would be stocked in school libraries.

“For me it’s a lesson for life,” she said.

“We have to watch out for the vulnerable.”

Sadly, after Tattoo’s repairs were complete and the statue was about to be unveiled for a second time, vandals struck again, cutting off the horse’s hooves and tagging it with graffiti.

Local talent takes centre stage

Until Everyone Comes Home featured the music and comedy of the 1930s and ’40s, including plenty of classic hits, performed by young singers, costumed and styled to look like the artists who made the songs famous, from Vera Lynn to the Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby.

••• In April Langley Has Talent entered its fourth year, crowning a new champion in local musical duo A Guy and A Girl.

Their uptempo rendition of The Civil Wars’ From This Valley earned the young musicians first place in the annual talent competition and an accompanying cheque for $2,500. Second place went to rock band Quinn

and Tonic, while 12-year-old dancer Paige McLachlan rounded out the top three.

••• Throughout 2014, Langley residents made their mark on the province and the nation, with musicians, authors, artists, actors and even an actor/ bartender proving they have what it takes to get noticed.

In the spring the R.E. Mountain Secondary Improv Team became the first Langley School to represent B.C. at the national level when they won a spot at the Canadian Improv Games in Ottawa.

The team did not make the top five and were therefore ineligible to compete for a national title on the final night of the games.

••• Being legally blind and developmentally disabled didn’t stop Langley musician Patrick Jagdeo from taking top spot in B.C. for his Royal Canadian Conservatory Grade 4 exam in guitar. Jagdeo, who often gives volunteer performances at Langley Seniors Resources Centre, received a gold medal for his efforts.

A collaborative effort by Fort Langley author Jane Watt and painter Richard Cole put the pair on the short list for national book prize in 2014. Watt and Cole were nominated for a Ruth and Silvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award for their colourful Continued Page 18

PRESENTS Proving brain injury can be tricky If you’re hurt in a car crash through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation from the at-fault driver or their insurer (typically ICBC).

But first you have to prove the crash was a cause of your injuries – that if it weren’t for the crash, you wouldn’t be having the health issues in question. Sometimes this isn’t obvious – the court may have to sort through conflicting medical information to decide this critical question of causation.

Peter’s family doctor said he had post-concussion syndrome – that he’d suffered a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) from his head hitting the windshield in the car accident.

Even though the air bag deployed, Peter’s head struck and shattered the windshield of the Civic, and he got a gash on his head. He also suffered soft-tissue neck, back and leg injuries. His co-worker took him to hospital, where he was treated for the cut on his head and released.

Based on the symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury given in court, the judge concluded Peter’s psychological difficulties and cognitive impairment were due to the car accident, not a pre-existing condition (the facts didn’t support that alternative diagnosis). And the judge noted the problems Peter had in court could stem from the brain injury he received in the accident.

The medical experts differed sharply as to the reason for his ongoing problems.

The defence’s expert doctor suggested he only got whiplash-type, soft-tissue injuries in that accident (not a brain injury), and that his Take Peter’s case (name changed). Anyone who has ever tried to pry a teenager out of bed in the morning does not need to be convinced of the teens altered circadian rhythm! Now the American Academy of Pediatrics agrees. They have issued a call to schools to ensure schools start no earlier than 8:30 am.

Adolescents require 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleeps nightly for optimal function, but many have difficulty falling asleep before 11 pm. Shifting to later starts allows the time for the required sleep.

One hour per day. That’s the recommended minimum amount of physical activity for kids. And, not just for health reasons. A study from the University of Illinois has demonstrated a link between moderate to vigorous exercise and improved brain function and cognition. Furthermore, there was a “dose-response” aspect in that repeated and ongoing exercise produced greater benefits. Now that’s a prescription!

While the information about the possible dangers of microwave radiation (MWR - emitted by wireless electronics) is conflicting, one fact has been shown:

••• Langley’s Ryan Steele spent the summer running across the nation’s television screens as he, along with co-worker and race partner Rob Goddard competed in the Amazing Race Canada.

After a couple of close calls, when the team nearly got eliminated, Steele and Goddard finished the race in a very respectable third place.

••• All in all, 2014 wasn’t a bad year for Langley country music artists. Not only did Karen Lee Batten sing her way to the top spot in the BC Country Music Association’s Spotlight Performer Contest on June 26, she also picked up the award for Female Vocalist of the Year from the BCCMA in October.

Also representing Langley at the BCCMA’s — Dallas Smith took home four awards including Album, Single, Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year.

A look back at the sports scene in 2014

With 2014 now behind us, it is a great time to sit back and look at some of the fantastic stories that made headlines in the sports sections of the Langley Times.

January • Professional lacrosse made its return to the Lower Mainland as the Vancouver Stealth debuted in the Langley Events Centre.

The Stealth, who play in the National Lacrosse League, relocated from Everett, Wash. The team, which advanced to the Champions Cup title game the season before, struggled on the floor as they finished 4-14 and out of the playoffs.

February • It was the thrill of a lifetime for the Langley Minor Hockey Association atom A4 Eagles as they were surprised with a visit from hockey’s biggest trophy, the Stanley Cup. The team’s players and coaches were one of five teams across the country honoured through Scotiabank’s Surprise and Delight campaign. The Eagles were chosen for their efforts of collecting 363 pounds of food and $375 for the local food bank.

• She may have left Langley at a young age, but Jessica Hewitt still has a strong contingent of family back in Langley, including her father. And they were cheering

her on from afar as the short track speed skater from Kamloops helped Canada win the silver medal in the team 3,000m event in Sochi at the 2014 Olympic Games.

March • There was no heartbreak this time around for the Brookswood Bobcats.

The senior girls basketball team, which fell short in the 2013 title game, completed the task in 2014, winning 64-57 over the Oak Bay Breakers in the championship final of the B.C. senior girls Triple-A basketball finals. It was the fourth title in the program’s history.

•The Langley Rivermen won the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy as the BCHL’s top team in the regular season, the first time a Langley junior A squad had done so. Head coach Bobby Henderson was named the league’s coach of the year. The team was ousted in the Mainland Division finals to the Coquitlam Express, who would go on to win the Fred Page Cup. The Express featured a trio of Langley players in Brendan Lamont, Daniell Lange and Anthony Gardner.

• Trinity Western Spartans men’s volleyball coach Ben Josephson wins the CIS coach of the year while Adam Schriemer is named rookie of the year.

• The Walnut Grove Gators Grade 8 boys basketball team wins bronze at provincials.

•Langley bantam Eagles win tier 4 provincial hockey title 3-1 over Kamloops.

• Langley United Premier men’s soccer team wins Pakenham Cup 5-2 over Port Moody Gunners.

• Langley United U21 wins Fraser Valley Soccer League U21 Cup 1-0 over Port Moody Gunners.

• Langley United Division 2 team wins President’s Cup 3-1 over West Coast United.

• Sarah Potomak helps Canada win gold at U18 world women’s hockey championship 5-1 over the U.S. in Hungary. Potomak scored twice in that game and had goals in four of five games.

April • Langley’s Stephen Ryan won the Pacific Junior Hockey League scoring title with 41 goals and 88 points in 44 games for the Aldergrove Kodiaks. He beat out another Langley Minor Hockey Association alumni — and Kodiaks teammate — Adam Callegari, who had 70 points.

The pair also helped the Kodiaks capture the PJHL championship in a thrilling seven-game series to the Richmond Sockeyes.

The Kodiaks trailed 3-1 in the series before battling back. Aldergrove advanced to the Cyclone Taylor Cup championships and made it to the gold medal game, but the junior B hockey club could not hold on to a 2-1 third period lead, falling 5-2 to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

• Langley Fundamental’s Hannah Beaton wins Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award.

• Brookswood’s Trevor Welzin wins silver at cadet/juvenile Canadian wrestling championships in 69-kg weight class May • It was a banner year for local hockey players and the Langley Minor Hockey Association at the annual Western Hockey League bantam draft as two locals were taken in the first round and six were taken overall. That included goaltender Jordan Hollett (13th overall) and defenceman Jarret Tyszka (16th overall). Hollett was the top pick ever for a Langley player and this marked the first time that two Langley players both went in the first round. The six selected also set a new record for Langley. Also selected were James Malm, Alec Capstick, Conner Bruggen-Cate and David Laurin.

• Langley’s Danielle Lawrie was honoured at her alma mater as the University of Washington retired her jersey number. Lawrie, a Brookswood graduate, was a dominant pitcher for the Huskies softball team during her four years in Seattle.

June • Langley’s Danton Heinen definitely made his mark in his one season in the BCHL. The Langley Minor Hockey Association product captained the Surrey Eagles, earning the league’s rookie of the year and most sportsmanlike player awards. And Heinen also impressed the NHL as the Boston Bruins selected him in the fourth round of the NHL entry draft.

The Langley Rivermen also had a player selected as the Winnipeg Jets grabbed Matt Ustaski in the seventh round.

• The Major League Baseball draft saw the Langley Blaze’s Mitchell Robinson selected in the 22nd round by the Miami Marlins and Kurtis Horne in the 31st round by the New York Mets.

• The Valley Ball Hockey Association Outlaws win bronze at peewee U12 ball hockey championships.

• Langley Christian’s Nickolas Colyn captured a pair of medals at the B.C. high school track and field championships. Colyn won gold in the 2000m steeplechase and bronze in the 3000m. Walnut Grove’s Robyn Buckingham delivered three medals, taking silver in the heptathlon and long jump and bronze in the javelin.

The pair helped Langley athletes win a combined 22 medals (Grade 8, junior and senior) at the championships.

• Langley Rebels win bronze at the U18 rep B provincial fastball championship.

• The Valley Selects U19 team wins gold at the Western Challenge Cup, beating the Delta Giants 5-0 in the ball hockey final.

• Langley Xtreme win silver at U14 rep B girls softball provincial championships.

• Bailey Herbert won medals of each colour for the Langley Olympians’ at the B.C. AAA long course championships. Herbert won two gold, one silver and a bronze for the swim club. Hugh McNeill won gold, silver and two bronze. And Renae Ledoux won one gold and Chelsea Borrowdale won bronze.

• Fort Langley hosts Prospera Valley GranFondo.

• Langley athletes helped the Fraser Valley win the medal race at the B.C. Summer Games.

August • With the gold medal on the line, Dakota Curry came up clutch, belting a walk-off bases loaded double which scored two runs in a 4-3 extra innings victory over the North Shore Twins in the finals of the B.C. Premier Baseball League provincial championships.

And later that month, the Lang-

ley Senior Blaze won gold at the Canadian senior men’s national baseball championships.

In the decisive game, Shane Kraemer delivered a gem in a 3-0 win to beat Ontario’s Tecumsheh Thunder 3-0. He allowed just two singles and two walks over seven innings in a complete game performance.

• Chelsea Borrowdale and Joel Harrison each won a gold medal as McLeod Athletic Park hosted the Canadian Legion youth track and field championships.

Borrowdale won in the midget 1500m steeplechase event while Harrison won in the pentathlon.

Altogether, Langley athletes won a dozen medals at the championships: Lauryn Cheung won bronze in pole vault; Megan Champoux silver 200m hurdles; Teagan Rasche silver javelin and bronze hammer throw; Jordan Ellingson silver javelin; Dean Ellenwood bronze 400m and silver 800m; Nickolas Colyn silver 2000m steeplechase; Tanika Dolfo bronze hammer throw; and Hannah Morrison helped win bronze in the 4x100 relay.

• The Langley Events Centre hosted the Minto Cup, Canada’s junior A lacrosse championship, with the Six Nations Arrows defeating the Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs.

• Ryan Martel, Nathaniel Kozevnikov Quinn McKitrick and Brock Rose help Team BC win gold at midget national lacrosse championships. And Raachel Beaulieu, Natalie Rahler and Carrigan Rose helped BC win gold at bantam national championships.

• The Langley Xtreme senior B women’s defeat the New Westminster Riot 7-3 to win the provincial title.

Input Sought on Township’s Kinder Morgan Concerns The Township of Langley continues to seek the public’s input on its concerns regarding Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project and will accept comments until Friday, January 9, 2015.

The Township of Langley has been granted corporate intervener status in the Kinder Morgan pipeline hearing and is preparing to submit its second information request to the National Energy Board. For more information, visit tol.ca/pipelineinput.

If approved, the project would see the pipeline twinned by locating a portion of new pipeline within the existing corridor up to 217A Street and creating a new pipeline corridor for the remainder. In August 2014, Kinder Morgan revised its corridor alignment to run through or around Redwoods Golf Course and through the industrial part of North West Langley toward Port Kells.

1972 Lancia Stratos HF – The Lancia Stratos HF is a monster of car. In the concept stages, the Stratos was an attempt by Bertone to get its foot in with Lancia, who had previously worked with Pinin Farina for design. The legend states that Bertone re-bodied a Lancia Fulvia and drove it to Lancia’s headquarters.

Impressed with the Stratos prototype, Lancia agreed to collaborate with Bertone to create their next generation rally car. The Stratos was built around a Lancia chassis, with a Ferrari Dino engine positioned behind the seats. The rolling chassis was finished off with an aerodynamic body fitted by Bertone. The Lancia would go on to have a legendary career, winning the World Rally Championship from 1974-1976.

1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R – The Nissan Skyline GT-R is arguably the most iconic sports car to ever come from the islands of Japan. While the GT-R is most commonly idolized in its mid-’90s guise from the Fast & Furious franchise, our pick is the original — the 1969 Skyline GT-R. Introduced at the 1969 Tokyo Auto Show, the GT-R was a Nissan Skyline sedan that was stripped out and given the special treatment by the boys in the Nissan Skunks Works team. The heart of the GT-R is a Nissan racing V-6 engine putting out 160 horsepower, allowing the GT-R to outrun its European rivals. Other cool upgrades included wide wheel arches, rally wheels, front and rear spoilers, and of course, the now-iconic GT-R badges.

1973 Chevrolet Firenza Can Am – American automotive manufacturers have made a number of performance cars exclusively for Europe and Australia, but have you ever heard of an African performance car?

Meet the Chevrolet Firenza Can Am, a Euro-American mash-up that was never sold in either of those markets. Built to compete with Ford’s inferior Capri Perana, the Can Am began its existence in Britain as a Vauxhall Firenza frame, which was then shipped straight south to Port Elizabeth, where it was paired with a power train straight out of an American legend — the 1969 Camaro Z/28. With a lightweight body and nearly 300 horsepower, the smell of burning rubber was a no-cost option, and I’m sure there was plenty of that. The car was limited to a run of 100, which were built to satisfy homologation requirements for Argus Production Car series, 30 of which are still known to exist.

Of course, Ford engineers weren’t satisfied with a compact coupe with 1.3-litre engine, so they contacted the blokes over at Cosworth and developed the Escort RS1600. While the Cosworth engine may have put out only 113 horsepower, the tiny Escort was barely tipping the scales at 1,800 pounds, making the RS1600 one of the coolest cars cruising the UK at the time.

The U.S. and Canada might get a wide variety of unique and exotic cars, but there are a few cars that never made it to our showrooms and appear now only has special imports.

1986 Porsche 959 – The Porsche 959 is a perfect example of what happens when some German mad scientists in Porsche decide that the 911 Turbo isn’t just quite enough. Built to be the ultimate Group B rally car, Porsche decided to slap an all-wheel drive system and a twin-turbo 2.8-liter boxer engine in a highly modified 911. In order to fulfill the FIA’s homologation rule, Porsche built 337 examples for consumption by the public. Of course, the EPA and Porsche weren’t quite on the same page, and the 959 was never legally sold in the U.S. However, several example of the 959 have made their ways to our shores, most notably the “Gates 959,” which was stored by U.S. Customs for 13 years and was key in the passing of the “Show and Display” law.

NOTICE TO NICOMEKL RIVER MARINE TRAFFIC. BNSF Railway is proposing to undertake major repairs to the swing span bridge located over the Nicomekl River at Crescent Beach Marina in January, 2015. This work will preclude the bridge from swinging for marine traffic for the duration of the project. It is anticipated that it will take approximately three (3) weeks to complete the repairs. BNSF is proposing to start the work on Wednesday, January 7 and complete the work on Friday, January 30. These dates are subject to obtaining authorization from Transport Canada under the Navigation Protection Act (NPA).

The work being undertaken on those dates with a view to disrupt as little marine traffic as possible. Historically, this the time of year with the least amount of marine traffic requiring the span to swing to enter or exit the Nicomekl River. All vessels not requiring the bridge span to swing will not be impacted by this work.
