Colin Basran wasn’t exactly new to the political sphere when he ran for the mayor’s seat in 2014, but he was nonetheless championed by his supporters as a fresh start for this city.

Kelowna’s long lamented reputation as the playground for the rich, white and elderly was repeatedly reflected in its council and Basran, who fit none of those stereotypes, was said to be the person to bring much needed vibrancy to the mayor’s office.

Demonstrating the drive and energy needed to back up that assertion, Basran campaigned tirelessly in the weeks leading to the election.

He was available for every interview, showed up at countless events and made his presence known in every conceivable way.

“If I had to guess based on belt loops, I’d say I lost at least 20 pounds during the campaign,” he said. “You are running on adrenaline and nervous energy…For me, it doesn’t matter how many times I’ve done public speaking events, I still get nervous. And with so many speaking

engagements, I didn’t eat. I was busy, skipping lunch and meals and just being busy.

The effort wasn’t lost on the electorate. Basran won the mayor’s seat with 57 per cent of the vote.

“I’ve had a lot of young people come up to me since the election and saying they voted for the first time because they finally had someone they could relate to, who was running,” he said.

“On the campaign I always said—and I believe—that I bring about a new era in decision making. I will be open to new ideas and I have a unique perspective.”

Born in 1977, Basran is part of what some have referred to as the “sandwich generation.”

He’s a parent of two children under the age of four and he has two living parents. That, he said, gives him insight into a wider swath of this city’s demographics.

“I have parents whom I want to make good decisions for and I have children whom I want to make good decisions for,” he said.

And, he explained, he won’t be the one coming up with all the answers.

The journey for Colin Basran to become elected mayor of Kelowna in the Nov. 15 civic election began with a press conference announcing his candidacy last summer. council to be a receptacle to innovative and workable concepts.

“It’s not council’s job to come up with the ideas.

It’s our job to allow the people who have the

good ideas to bring those ideas forward and for us to implement them together,” he said, noting that a big part of that is allowing city staff the freedom to do their jobs

to the best of their ability.

He likes the direction things are going in, anyway.

“I wasn’t running on a campaign for change,” Basran said. “Let’s keep

it moving in the current direction, where we’re open for opportunity.

“They can be business, social and artistic opportunities…I want us to have a well balanced

community, economically and socially.”

When asked for an example of how he sees that vision coming to life, he pointed to the Rutland Centennial Park revitalization, which is on the books for 2015.

“It will improve things in a number of ways,” he said. “I think part of the plan there is to get some youth soccer fields. And with that I see parents dropping off their kids to play soccer then going to grab groceries or coffee. A revitalized park stimulates the economy around the park and improves the health opportunities for families.”

That kind of project, he explained, helps Kelowna achieve its potential— something he’s been thinking about his whole life and the reason why he’s so thankful to have been given the mandate by the electorate to work toward.

“Being mayor is an absolute dream come true,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier. Being somebody who was born and raised in Kelowna, then getting to become the mayor…I don’t know how to put how that makes me feel into words.” @kelownanewsKAT

It was a changing of the guard on Kelowna city council in 2014.

Council lost two veteran councillors and a popular mayor who, despite being back for only one term, was a well-known face at city hall, having served two previous terms as mayor

from 1996 to 2005 and three terms as a councillor in the 1980s.

Councillors Robert Hobson and Andre Blanleil, who between them had more than 40 years experience on council (Hobson 26 and Blanleil 22) called it quits in 2014, opting not to run again.

With both saying they felt it was time for new blood on council and

expressing satisfaction with what they had achieved while serving the city and, in Hobson’s case, the region as long-time chairman of the Central Okanagan Regional District, the duo left the local political scene in very different ways.

While Hobson stayed neutral to the end, Blanleil actively, and vocally supported fellow councillor

Colin Basran in his successful run to succeed Gray as mayor.

In fact, on election night Basran singled out Blanleil, saying he felt his win meant as much for the veteran councillor who had taken Basran—a single-term councillor—under his wing over the last four years as it did for him.

In the mayoral election, Basran

handily beat out former mayor Sharon Shepherd, who was attempting to make a political comeback after she lost to Gray in 2011 after serving two terms a mayor. She served under Gray as a councillor and them defeated him for the mayor’s chair in 2005.

After reading a particularly violent crime story, most people can brush off lingering unpleasantness with this little lie: What happened involved people unlike

them, in situations they would never engage in.

The ability to invoke that particular emotional defense, however, isn’t always possible, as was the case with the Oct. 30 killing of Caesar Rosales.

Rosales was not a member of Kelowna’s

underworld, nor someone who even would stand out in a crowd.

He wasn’t in the wrong place, engaging in unsafe behaviours or choosing to spend time with people who did.

going about the business of every day life, which is what made the final chapter of his story so unsettling for so many people.

Rosales, 55, had finished the work day at Kelowna Flightcraft that Thursday and was commuting home when he told friends that the weather looked pleasant and he wanted to take the bus downtown to run some errands.

He was a regular transit user, and had even gone so far as to inquire about the efficiency of the local bus system before he accepted the position at the Kelowna-based aerospace company.

So he was likely just retracing steps he had taken before when he faced a violent turn of events.

According to witness accounts, Rosales was on his seat near the door of the bus when a man stabbed him and ran away.

try and save him.

By the time police and ambulance crews arrived he had already died.

At Flightcraft, where most of Rosales’s friends worked, nobody was the wiser to his fate.

It wasn’t until he had missed a shift that people started asking questions.

Rosales was known to be conscientious and unlikely to miss a day without calling in, so they started making inquiries to the police.

News soon filtered out it was Rosales.

“It’s a struggle. It’s a big void for the people he worked with,” FlightCraft’s Grant Stevens said. “You come to work and see his desk, and now it’s empty, and you know he’s never coming back.”

Those who knew him well weren’t the only ones who struggled with the

violent turn of events.

Drivers on Kelowna’s bus routes were familiar with Rosales, and the violence they were dealt that night shattered the calm they were accustomed to.

In a unanimous show of support, dozens of Kelowna bus drivers pulled over their buses for a minute of silence on the day of Rosales’s funeral.

The driver from the night Rosales was killed took that time to lay a bouquet of flowers at their last shared stop.

Because the event was so random, there’s no real lesson to be taken.

The story of the man who is charged with the killing will be made clear in the future, as he jumps through the hoops of the legal system. @kelownanewsKAT

Seeing new faces at city hall COUNCIL FROM A3

For Gray, who said he believed politicians have a “shelf life” and felt he had reached the end of his, leaving city hall— his on and off political home over the last 30 years—was a somewhat prolonged move.

Several months before publicly announcing he would not seek reelection, Gray said he would make his decision early to give anyone looking to replace him— specially those on his council—time to mount a sustained campaign.

So potential successors had to wait for his decision.

Basran was first out of the blocks, announcing early he was interested in the mayor’s job. But he said he would not seek it if Gray ran again.

He was also the first candidate to announce his candidacy, doing it very early, way back in April.

Basran was not alone in considering a mayoral bid. Two of his council colleagues, Luke Stack and Gail Given talked about possible runs, but both opted to seek reelection as councillors.

Both were successful and Given went on to succeed Hobson as regional district chair.

On the council side, another departure was a familiar face to many, former long-time Kelowna fire chief Gerry Zimmermann who left after just one term.

Zimmermann has subsequently been appointed to sit on the provincial Agricultural Land Commission.

In the November civic election, the four incumbents who ran— Stack, Given, Mohini Singh and Maxine DeHart—were all reelected, joined by newcomers Tracy Gray (the wife of Walter Gray’s nephew), Brad Seiben, Ryan Donn and former councillor Charlie Hodge.

were all endorsed by ForKelowna, a group of businesspeople who were part of the controversial

One of those was Hodge, who lost his seat on council three years ago but claimed the

Sticking to your 2015 resolutions

January for a new year is almost here and we’re all still bloated from Christmas and regretting our life choices over the past week.

That awful post-Christmas guilt suddenly makes us want to be better people and we resolve that this year we will do those things we’ve wanted to do for years.

Whether it’s eating more healthily, going to the gym, quitting smoking or promising yourself that you will take that trip of a lifetime, the first week of the year can be an exciting time fresh with new hope for the future.

But if you don’t stick to your promises, the second week can be a bit more guilt-laden.

So how do we avoid falling off the wagon at the first hurdle? How do we manage to stick to our goals until we see results?

The NHS website has published some great tips from professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, on how to make those New Year’s resolutions a reality: 1) Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

2) Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve.

3) Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment.

4) Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and timebased.

5) Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim.

6) Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress.

2015: Year of climate adaptation It’s time to look beyond the protests Victoria News and political battles around climate change that TOM dominated 2014, and FLETCHER look at the year and the decade ahead.

From the California drought to shifting forest patterns across B.C., there is evidence that our climate is changing more rapidly.

Public debate consists mainly of squabbling about the significance of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, rather than what can be done to prepare.

A draft discussion paper from the B.C. forests ministry on wildfire control was released in December after an access to information request. “Climate Change Adaptation and Action Plan For Wildfire Management, 2014-2024” describes the progress made in the province’s community forest fire prevention plan, and its goal to create “wildfire resilient ecosystems and wildfire adapted communities” over the next 10 years.

The final discussion paper is to be released early in 2015, but the key research is in. It estimates that by 2017 there will be 788 million cubic metres of dead pine in B.C. forests. Fires in these areas spread 2.6 times faster than in healthy green stands, up to 66 metres per minute.

The report calls for fuel management beyond community boundaries to stop “mega-fires” by creating landscape-level fuel breaks, with targeted harvesting, prescribed burning and new silviculture practices.

It notes that bark beetle infestations and bigger, hotter fires are being seen across North America, with costs rising along with urban development. For example, the 2011 Slave Lake fire in northern Alberta generated the second largest insurance charge in Canadian history.

The costs of preparing are huge. The costs of not preparing could be catastrophic.

advisory committee to prepare for the renewal of the Columbia River Treaty with the United States.

While this 1964 treaty has no end date, its flood control mandate expires in 2024. I spoke with Deborah Harford and Jon O’Riordan, members of the Simon Fraser University Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT), who, along with ACT senior policy author Robert Sandford, have written a provocative book on the treaty.

They hope it will help lead to a renewed agreement that will be a model for a changing world.

“If you’re looking ahead 60 years from 2024, there’s a lot of climate change projected in that period, for British Columbia and the U.S.,” Harford said. “For the B.C. side, we’re looking at heavy precipitation and potential increase in snowmelt runoff, while in the States, you’re getting the opposite, much less snow.

“There will probably be no snowpack left down there, and they’re looking at the prospect of quite drastically lower flows in the summer.”

The treaty, sparked by devastating floods in 1948, led to construction of three dams on the B.C. side and one at Libby, Washington that backed up Kookanusa Lake into B.C. Between that reservoir and the Arrow Lakes, 110,000 hectares of B.C. land was flooded, including orchards, dairy farms and the homes of 2,000 people.

Those dams hold back spring flood water and provide for irrigation that has allowed Washington to expand its agriculture to a $5 billion-a-year industry. The treaty shares the value of hydroelectric power generated by the many downstream U.S. dams such as the Grand Coulee, but it pays B.C. nothing for agricultural benefits that were achieved at the cost of B.C. farms and aboriginal territories.

O’Riordan notes that climate shifts create a strategic benefit for B.C. The U.S. has no more dam capacity to exploit, and needs us more than ever, for flood protection and water supply.

Residents resent quota going to trophy hunters

To the editor: Re: The proposed changes to the Wildlife Allocation Policy. (B.C. Hunters Oppose Giving More Game to Non-resident Hunters, Dec. 12, and B.C. Game for B.C. Hunters, Dec. 17 Capital News.

The request by The Guide Outfitters Association of BC (GOABC) for a wildlife allocation increase to 25-40 per cent for non-resident hunters is astounding. Aside from sheer greed and the desire to chase the almighty dollar, I can see no other reason why GOABC would push for a change to our wildlife allocation policy that would grant more hunting privileges to non-residents and that would see the hard working, tax paying residents of our province lose their hunting privileges to an already declining trophy hunting industry in British Columbia.

The norm for most provinces in Canada, and states in the USA, is an allocation of 5-10 per cent of their wildlife to non-resident hunters. This has proven to be a healthy and sustainable allocation of the wildlife populations and has allowed for ample hunting opportunities for both resident and non-resident hunters alike. So, the request by our province’s Guide Outfitters Association for an allocation of 25-40 per cent for nonresidents seems a bit high, to say the least.

We, as resident hunters, need to help regulate this sale of our precious wildlife to foreign hunters, by voicing our opinions to those in government who have the power to legislate fair allocations for all.

The number of resident hunters in B.C. has risen by 20 per cent over the last 10 years, from 85,000 to upwards of 102,000, while the number of non-resident hunters has seen a decline of 30 per cent over the same time period, from 6,500 down to 4,500. That is 102,000 outdoors men, outdoors women and children, that love to spend time in our wilderness while in pursuit of a healthy, organic and challenging source of food and who stand to lose their hunting opportunities to the mere 4,500 or so non-resident trophy hunters.

I am the father of young children, and I can only hope that in 10 years time, when they are old enough to hunt, that there will still be opportunity for them to do so in our

province. It is an experience as Canadian as hockey, and the opportunity to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors should remain a right for us, the residents of British Columbia.

I would ask that you, as a resident of B.C., hunter or not, please show your support for those of us that love this experience by writing a letter to your local MLA, to our premier or by simply signing a petition on www.change.org under the title “Don’t Take Away Resident Hunters’ Rights.”

Upon attending a local BC Wildlife Federation meeting at the Kelowna Gun Club recently, I learned that big game wildlife allocation to resident hunters is going to be significantly reduced in order to satisfy greedy requests from the Guide Outfitters Association of BC who have demanded a greater quota of animals so that they can sell more trophy hunts to foreign (non-resident) hunters.

I, along with approximately 200 other hunters (most of whom are also local sustenance hunters), were appalled to learn about this recent change in government policy without any consultation with B.C. citizens, resident hunters or the groups that represent them. As per usual provincial government modus operandi, we the citizens of the province had to hear about this change in wildlife allocation policy after it was rubber stamped by MLA Steve Thompson.

I have to admit that upsetting a large number of passionate people, armed with guns is a very unwise decision any politician could partake in. A short historical review easily backs up this statement.

We must protect our wildlife, conserve and secure it for future generations to enjoy and harvest. We must stop this sell off of our resources. If we don’t take a stand now, when will it ever end?

Location choices To the editor: Might I remind Mr. Rescorla that he and his constituents chose to live in Joe Rich and similar areas.

(Fortis’s Residential Conservation Rate Discriminates Against Everyone Living in Rural Areas, Dec. 26 Capital News) My main concern here is whether or not the current Fortis rates account for greater costs incurred by rural residents or are those of us living closer to cities and/or urban centres now being served with natural gas and other options being asked to subsidize Mr. Rescorla either as ratepayers and/or shareholders.

What will be next? Will Mr. Rescorla also insist we subsidize the fuel for his vehicles because he does not have the same options for public transit that I and my wife do?

To the editor: There has been some chatter regarding the misuse of Boucherie Road in West Kelowna.

The chatter suggests that Boucherie Road is being used as an alternate highway, and that most, if not all, vehicles that travel along this road are driven by people who speed or drive over-size trucks that tear up the road.

The chatter mentions that in order to deter of the Central and South rule-breakers there should be frequent police Okanagan / Similkameen check-stops along the road, speed bumps and circular models at intersections, and residents should, basically, use Hwy. 97 to lessen the road-load and stop ‘wear and tear.’

When making an informed decision as to how to best manage Boucherie Road consider the following five points: of the Central and South 1. Boucherie Road is a BC Transit bus route Okanagan / Similkameen and bus routes do not allow for speed bumps 2. Boucherie Road is a narrow two lane, mostly soft-shoulder, winding road with sharp corners and obstruction of view, which makes it unsafe for police pull-overs (there are frequent police check-stops at Ridge Estates Drive and just north of Hudson Road where the road is safe for pull-over.)

3. Boucherie Road is a BC Tourism route for some of the best wineries and B&Bs in B.C. and that is a factor for heavy traffic, especially Areas of practice include: in the summer and fall months. (These folks • ICBC Claims tend to drive slowly, not speed, to enjoy the view.)

Make yourself seen in 2015 To the editor: I voted in your jaywalking poll but thought I would go a step further and explain why my vote was “No, jaywalking is not a serious issue.”

I have been almost hit so many times crossing the street at a lighted crosswalk with the light and the sound letting the pedestrian know that they have the right of way.

Drivers in this city don’t seem to care about the pedestrians. I have seen this happen to other pedestrians as well as people in wheelchairs.

You take your life in your hands walking across the street when you are supposedly safe to do so, but that seems to be when it is the most dangerous.

dark, wet nights it is extremely difficult to see pedestrians or cyclists, who are often wearing dark colours and are walking, or biking, too close to the road.

Please, before you head out, think about making yourself visible. Assume that you can’t be seen. Take a flashlight or wear a reflective jacket if walking, and if cycling, make sure your bike is well lit up both front and back. Before crossing the street, make sure the cars are stopped for you. If you are walking a dog, please keep them well off the road and buy a reflective collar or a leash with lights. Again I ask, assume that you can’t be seen.

I can’t imagine the agony of being struck by a vehicle, and the anguish of the person behind the wheel, and now that speeding and running red lights appears to be the norm in Kelowna, it is even more dangerous.

Chief Byron Louis of the Okanagan Indian Band has warned local municipalities investing in the purchase of the former CN rail line that ownership of about a 20-kilometre portion of the rail line is subject to a land claim by the band. they have been successful in buying the corridor for $22 million from CN. But the ramifications of the purchase on the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB), which claims part of the land as its own, will likely take much longer before they become clear.

This saga that dates back to the late 1800s is the biggest story of 2014, not only here in the Okanagan, but it should resonate with all of us who are living on these lands that were first inhabited by First Nations, before European settlers moved in.

Kelowna, Lake Country

and the North Okanagan Regional District will combine to raise about $15 million of the $22 million that CN wants for the corridor.

According to officials in Kelowna and Lake Country, the rest of the money is set to come from higher levels of government. The fact that the OKIB land claim has been ignored for so long is what has turned this story from a win-win into something that just doesn’t feel right.

Sure, I hope that the corridor is saved and is turned into something great. CN would have

The Kelowna-born ski cross racer defied consecutive seasonending injuries, by climbing on to the podium at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

just behind Canadian teammate and friend, Marielle Thompson.

“I’m super happy to be walking away with a silver medal and even happier to be sharing it with my teammate Marielle,” Serwa said.

“Every race I go out, I fight tooth and nail to get to the top of the podium.

“But it was the most amazing feeling coming over the finish line 1-and2, knowing that we were bringing gold home to Canada and one more (medal).”

In 1877, the federal government designated it as a reserve, only to take it back in 1891 and give it to white ranchers. Courts have ruled that First Nations do have rights to the land.

Lake Country Mayor James Baker called it a mess then and a mess now. Meanwhile, OKIB Chief Byron Louis and his band have come out in opposition to the deal.

It’s time for the governments to deal with this land claim. It’s time to right a wrong, not pile on to the list of atrocities and mistreatment of First Nations.

It’s time for someone in local government to have an opinion on this other than to say it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.

Opportunity of a lifetime? Not for the Okanagan Indian Band.

No, the municipalities have said this isn’t their issue. They say it’s for higher levels of government to deal with First Nations.

But standing by and watching First Nations get walked on again does not mean there is no blood on their hands. The group invited the OKIB to the table to take part in the process.

What were they thinking? That the natives wanted to buy their own land back from CN Rail?

No, that was just due diligence by the group so they could say they tried.

at all this year was a testament to both her perseverance and healing abilities. Her journey leading up to the Sochi Olympics was plagued by misfortune and injury.

After seriously hurting her back, Serwa twice damaged the same knee, in 2012 and again in 2013.

In the end, Serwa refused to give up on her medal aspirations.“Last year I actually thought about stepping away after I blew my knee again,” she said.

“Once that came into my mind, I got really sad

and realized I wasn’t ready for retirement yet and because I still had some energy left in the bank.”

If Serwa was elated and moved by the turn of events in Sochi, she would be further overwhelmed by the reception waiting for her back in Kelowna.

Upon her return, hundreds of fans, along with friends and family showed up at the Kelowna International Aiport for a hero’s welcome.

“This is above and beyond what I ever expected,” said Serwa, who shed a few tears in response to the greeting.

“I think it just goes to show how strong a community Kelowna is.

I didn’t get here on my own, it was a huge group effort, and just the love and support I felt in Russia from Kelowna.”

After a season off from competition, Serwa plans to return to the World Cup ski cross circuit next year.

Christmas is a great time to celebrate our many ‘angels’ Still stuffed from the stuffing?

I am, and pleasantly so.

When it comes to food and festivities nothing beats the combination better than the Christmas season.

Most of my life I’ve been blessed enough to either attend or host major Christmas dinners complete with turkey, veggies, gravy, stuffing, desert—fortunate indeed considering so many have no such pleasure.

For a sweet-tooth such as moi, even better than an amazing Christmas dinner is, in the weeks prior, the ever-emerging and expanding array of delectables for mouth and stomach.

Chocolates, shortbread, butter tarts, mincemeat, fruitcake, gingerbread men, Christmas candies, candycanes and for good health —mandarin oranges.

Mid-January to midFebruary is generally spent in stomach rehab and sugar withdrawal therapy.

Hodge Podge CHARLIE HODGE Special times with family and friends always add to the celebration, including the sharing and consuming of the above mentioned gourmet items.

I love presents. I make no bones about that.

However, I really do get a special pleasure out of giving stuff at Christmas.

To me, the whole gift giving ‘thing’ is an adventure and a hoot. In fact, I generally take all the crowds, stress, lineups and other negative distractions as merely part of the traditional ritual. I basically ignore the nasty and seek the nice.

What I therefore enjoy most about Christmas time is the kindness in others. Those special moments when strangers merrily exchange greetings and smiles with

strangers.

It’s that annual spirit of sharing display which inspired my original Charlie’s Angels list many years ago.

The criteria to be an Angel is simple— be a nice person who willingly does something nice for others. Angels are people who make a difference in some way, shape, or form in your world.

Last week, I ran out of space before printing a few other readers’ Angel lists and, of course, my own. So...

Les Thompson’s nominee is his Big Brother Barry Johnson. Through Big Brothers of Kelowna, Barry befriended a young Les some 40 years ago this year. Les says that mentorship and friendship has meant a great deal to him all his life. That’s a lasting Angel, for sure. Way to go Barry.

Peter Comrie and Joyce Evans along with Lorraine and Don Richmond are

two Kelowna couples that routinely do amazing things for others in our communities. They join Westside resident Ruth Gerber for her angel-like work with others, and Lake Country’s Karie Hay (or her work with injured workers around B.C. and friends and family here in Kelowna) as special members of Charlie’s Angels list.

My favourite angel Teresa (Tez) says her list of Angels is not huge this year but those on it are platinum angels.

Marlene Lang tops a list that includes Sheryl Deni, Deb Stone, daughter Lisa Derksen (Carlow), and the Dyck’s pharmacist on Gordon Drive and his assistant Sue. Last but not least there is Teresa’s mom Otti Tomani. Even though she is my mother-in-law, she really is an angel.

Angels list, not only for the obvious reasons but also for her tremendous work and support in so many ways during the past couple of months of civic election insanity.

A handful of amazing other folks have really ‘been there’ this past year

it is humbling. Brothers like Keith Thom, Gary Smyth, Curtis Tulman, Jim Krahn, Ralph Krehbiel, Ziggy, and my Aunty Rae Banner—always there rain or shine.

Wes Kimmett, Noel Barber, Jim Ripley, Bernie and Bettina,

Jim LeGuilloux, Elie Marchante, Ken Chung, Les Thompson and Yves Beliveau are salt of the earth folk who do many things for others quietly, or, in some cases, not so quietly. They make this a better place to live.

Seniors DEMENTIA SYMPTOMS

I had the pleasure before Christmas of attending the West Kelowna Silver Song Group, a session of singing and music which is the brainchild of the Sing For Your Life Foundation.

Now in its fourth season, regular sessions are held at three locations in our area to offer a unique and protected model of participatory music-making for older adults.

The model is driven by the latest developments in the field of Creative Arts and Health.

I gathered with the 40 or so participants that had come out on a cold winter’s day to join in the joy and merry making that comes with singing and socializing.

The group is led by musically experienced facilitators and several volunteers are there to assist with the hour and a half session.

I noticed right away that the participants were happy to be there and a festive atmosphere pervaded the room.

Coffee was on and some delicious goodies were out for all to enjoy.

Chatting with several people before sitting down, I discovered that

Seniors’ Concerns MARJORIE HORNE I was the newbie, and that many of the others present attended the sessions regularly, not because they have to be good singers, but because it makes them feel good.

“I love it”; Wouldn’t miss it” were the jist of their comments to me. Music books were available for each person and a couple of most jolly fellows, Robin and Dan were the leaders for the day’s group.

We started off with a couple of Christmas songs to get our voices woken up. As the session went on, various musical instruments were added in for people to play.

Beautiful sets of hand chimes, easily managed by all, percussion instruments and tambourines were given to individuals to add in to the merrymaking, with a big dose of encouragement from the volunteers and the rest of the group.

What I noticed was the exuberance of everyone, including myself, as the

session went on.

Lots of laughter filled the room and as I looked down the row of singers, everyone’s foot was tapping on the floor most enthusiastically just as mine was.

I could feel an abundance of energy moving in my body and those around me and soon the whole room was a-rockin’, because music has a way of connecting us to memories that help us feel good and happy.

It was obviously working with this crowd as I looked around at the smiling faces and smiling is very catchy you know.

When everyone around you is smiling, it’s hard not to smile yourself.

I have been reading a book called “This Is Your Brain On Music” by Daniel Levitin. I am very interested in how music forms a connection for those who have dementia that creates a positive effect on their well being.

It is evident that even as memory loss progresses in Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, the remembrance of music that was loved by the individual remains intact.

That is quite incredible

and offers a way to reconnect through the emotions with an older person suffering from disconnection with the present and with their loved ones.

Daniel writes: “Research has shown that it is the teen years that are the turning point for musical preferences. As adults, the music we tend to be nostalgic for, the music that feels like it is ‘our music,’ corresponds to the music we heard during these years. It is because these are the years of self-discovery, and as a consequence, are emotionally charged; in general, we tend to remember things that have an emotional component because our amygdala and neurotransmitters act in concert to ‘tag’ the memories as something important.”

I recently bought a harmonica for one of my clients who is very musically inclined but now experiencing the symptoms of dementia.

He hadn’t played this instrument for many years. I was amazed to see him pick up the harmonica and play it like a pro, remembering all of the songs that he used to play when he was very

young.

It brought such joy to his face and to mine, seeing him feel this reconnection to something that helped him feel empowered and joyful. The brain holds many mysteries for us still to discover.

• Smoking The largest population of smokers are baby boomers between the ages of 44 and 54. By now it’s hard to imagine that we haven’t got the message about the health risks of smoking. We just need to act on it.

• Lack of sleep The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports most people are not getting enough sleep and it adversely affects our own health and

puts others at risk especially when we get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

• Making poor food choices Most seniors over the age of 65 have one or more degenerative disorders, such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, macular degeneration or osteoporosis.

These conditions were once considered inevitable diseases of old age, but now are recognized as lifestyle diseases. So, making good food choices can prevent and reduce the risks of developing these diseases.

That Kelsey Serwa was still able to compete against the world’s best in 2014 was, in itself, a story of will and perseverance.

But the Kelowna ski cross racer wasn’t content to just to show up at the starting line.

Serwa made an unlikely comeback from serious knee injuries two years running to step on to the podium on the ultimate athletic stage.

She charged her way a silver-medal performance at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, finishing second only to Canadian teammate and friend, Marielle Thompson.

“I’m super happy to be walking away with a silver medal and even happier to be sharing it with my teammate Marielle,” Serwa said. “…it was the most amazing feeling coming over the finish line 1-and-2, knowing that we were bringing gold home to Canada and one more (medal). I skied as fast I could, she skied as fast as she could, and it turned out pretty well.”

Serwa’s journey leading up to the Sochi Olympics was plagued by misfortune and injury.

After seriously hurting her back, Serwa twice

damaged the same knee, in 2012 and again in 2013.

She could have just as easily walked away from the sport, but Serwa’s lifelong dream was just too powerful to leave behind.

“Last year I actually thought about stepping away after I blew my knee again,” she said.

“Once that came into my mind, I got really sad and realized I wasn’t ready for retirement yet and because I still had some energy left in the bank.”

If Serwa was thrilled by what happened in Sochi, she would be further elated and overwhelmed by the reception waiting for her back in Kelowna.

Upon her return, hundreds of fans, along with friends and family showed up at the Kelowna International Airport for a hero’s welcome.

“This is above and beyond what I ever expected,” said Serwa, who shed a few tears in response to the greeting.

“I think it just goes to show how strong a community Kelowna is. I didn’t get here on my own, it was a huge group effort, and just the love and support I felt in Russia from Kelowna…is unspeakable.”

The Kelowna Rockets didn’t celebrate a championship, but still made 2014 one of the most eventful and memorable years in club history.

Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Huska for the last time, the Rockets captured the Western Hockey League’s overall title, while also setting franchise records for victories (57) and points (118).

“It’s a testament to the kids, they’ve played hard all year, and our coaches have done a wonderful job with them,” said Rockets’ GM Bruce Hamilton.

Despite their regular season exploits, the Rockets were ousted from the playoffs in the WHL’s Western Conference

final in five games by the Portland Winterhawks.

Still, with team success came individual success as Jordon Cooke was named the WHL’s goaltender of the year, while forward Nick Merkley earned the league’s rookie of the year honours.

Cooke later added the CHL goaltender of the year award, as the 20-year-old from Leduc, Alta. capped off a solid junior career.

“This award has everything to do with the team success we had,” Cooke said. “It’s a product of the the way the guys played in front of me, and they are a big reason I’m here today with this award.”

HUSKA MOVES ON

Following the season, Ryan Huska announced he would be moving on after seven years as head

coach of the Rockets.

The 38-year-old Huska took on the top bench job with the AHL’s Adirondack Flames.

“Reflecting back, we’re proud of the records we’ve had and the banners we’ve had, but I’m going to be remembering the team, and all the people that allowed us to get to that point, and allowed me the opportunity to move on,” Huska said. “That’s what’s really special about this organization.”

Taking over as the new head man was Dan Lambert, Huska’s righthand man for the last five seasons. “(Ryan) being successful has allowed me to grow as a young coach and now to get this opportunity, I’m very grateful to the Hamilton family and that they trust in me that I can follow in Ryan’s footsteps.”

Kelowna’s Julianne Delaurier captured a silver medal in junior women’s competition at the Canada’s national figure skating championships.

sports in 2014_____________________________________________________________ A trio of the best players to ever wear the colours of the Kelowna Rockets helped their country to golden glory in 2014.

Defencemen Shea Weber and Duncan Keith, and forward Jamie Benn all played key roles as Canada captured the gold medal in men’s hockey at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

“Everybody in our organization is pretty pleased to see what these guys have done,” Frey said. “There were a lot of people along the way at different levels who deserve credit for their success, we were just lucky and happy to be part of it. They were all good kids when they were here and they enjoyed success with us. Kudos to all three of them.”

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Weber, was a defensive stalwart along the Canadian blue line

and also displayed his heavy, powerful shot as the Sicamous native scored three goals— second most on the Canadian team—during the Olympic tournament.

Weber played four seasons in Kelowna, including winning the Memorial Cup with the Rockets in 2004.

Keith, a product of Penticton, who played with the Rockets in 200203, was another rock for Canada along the blue line at the Olympics. He was second only to his partner, Weber, in ice time for Canada at 126

minutes.

Benn, who played his way on the Canada’s roster after a solid start to the NHL season, teamed up with Ryan Getzlaf and Cory Perry to form one of Canada’s most effective forechecking lines at the tournament.

Benn, a Victoria native, scored two goals in the tournament, including the lone marker in Canada’s 1-0 semifinal win over the United States.

Benn played two seasons in Kelowna, helping the Rockets to the WHL title in 2009.

The aftermath of a wonderful Christmas dinner? Cranberry sauce on the carpet! How can I remove it safely?

Well, first of all, don’t panic! Begin by scraping up and removing any solids.

Then blot up any excess moisture, but do not use excessive scrubbing as it may fray the fibers. Mix a solution of ¼ cup white vinegar, one tbsp liquid dish soap (Dawn or Ivory work well - just be sure it does not contain skin moisturizers) into one liter of water or a standard size trigger sprayer. Mist onto the spot but do not oversaturate.

Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes. Then blot gently with a white towel checking periodically to see if there is any transfer of color. Blot with a dry towel and stand up the nap to dry. In many cases, this will be completely successful, but if not, call Oxy-Dry. Mary Statham is a classically trained pianist. She has written a novel and she’s been rock climbing.

Yet rather than despair, she took action, connecting with CRIS Adaptive Adventures, as an active participant and volunteer.

“Going out with CRIS saved my life,” she says. “One of the first things we did was climb Mount Boucherie and then we went down the really tricky way with me holding on to somebody’s backpack and I was like: ‘Oh my God. It’s not over. There’s so much more to do.’”

Her nephew is now teaching in Japan and Statham represents CRIS in media campaigns, doing her best to share her gifts to benefit others.

Courage

Angie Lohr has courage in spades.

A former cocaine addict and sex worker, she always knew, if she ever got clean, she would start a program to help others achieve the same, hopefully with a safe house.

Now six years into running H.O.P.E. Outreach, an incredible non-profit organization offering direct support to street workers and a house for those caught in the addiction cycle, she is living the dream.

“To see where we are today, I don’t know, I can’t even put words to it. I would never have dreamed,” she said.

In the beginning, her methods did not sit well with some members of the community, but she persevered, winning Kelowna over.

A team assembled by general manager David Michaud with the sole intention of winning championships, the Okanagan Rockets didn’t disappoint in 2014.

After finishing the B.C. Major Midget League regular season with a club-record 32 victories, the Rockets went on to claim their first league title since 2006.

The Rockets displaced the defending champion Vancouver Northwest Giants 2-0 in the best-ofthree BCMML final.

Head coach Mack O’Rourke pointed to both team play and commitment to the cause as the Okanagan squads main keys to success.

“The players were unbelievable in buying into our system and accepting their roles,” O’Rourke said. “Some guys obviously didn’t play as much as others, but they were all committed to what we asked of them.”

Two weeks later, the Rockets made club history by defeating the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs two games to one in the Pacific Regional final.

The series win earned Okanagan its first ever berth in the Telus Cup national midget championship.

“We know we can accomplish great things when we put our mind to it,” said GM David Michaud. “With these guys, when they get knocked down they don’t want to stay down.”

While the Rockets didn’t finish off the season with another title, they did manage to medal at the nationals in Moose Jaw. After watching their championship aspirations disappear in a loss to

Prince Albert a day earlier, the Rockets downed the Toronto Young Nationals 3-2 in overtime to earn bronze.

“It was real important for them not to lay down and they didn’t,” Michaud said. “Winning this in overtime is a great lasting memory to our season. We think we deserved to have this, and to say ‘We’re No. 3… that’s not a bad thing at all.”

The Rockets also won the Kelowna International Elite Midget Tournament in January, defeating Waterloo in the final.

As it was, the Okanagan foursome, skipped by Calgary’s John Morris, won the B.C. men’s curling title, before settling for second best at the Brier in Kamloops.

In February, Morris, Cotter, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky captured the provincial championship with a 10-2 victory over Jason Montgomery in the final.

A month later, the Vernon/Kelowna rink posted a 9-2 record to finish first in the round robin at the Canadian men’s championship.

The Morris/Cotter team advanced through the playoffs all the way to the final before running out of magic, losing 10-5 to Alberta’s Kevin Koe. Despite a disappointing end to the season, second Tyrel Griffith said it was a rewarding year with the Morris/Cotter team,

RUSSELL, ROBERT (BOB) It is with great sadness that we announce Robert (Bob) Russell passed away on December 25, 2014 at the age of 83 years. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Cooke, his granddaughter Tara, his sister in law Donna Russell, his nephew Roger Russell (and family) as well as extended family in BC, Alberta and Ontario. Bob was sadly predeceased by his wife Patricia in 2006 and his brother Leslie in 2010.

1933 ~ 2014 Norma was born on March 12th 1933 in Calgary, Alberta and passed away peacefully on December 22nd 2014 at Kelowna General Hospital with her loving husband of 33 years, John Gammie at her side. Now resting peacefully she leaves behind many fond memories to her sons, Jim (Jenn) Hance and family of Kelowna, BC, Allen Gammie of Edmonton, AB, brother Lawrence “Joe” (Sharron) Gregory and families all of Calgary, AB as well as numerous friends.

Norma put all her heart into working with the children of S.D. 23’s Black Mountain Elementary, Kelowna, BC where she was the head secretary from 1975 to 1990. As per the families request there will be no formal service at this time, a celebration of Norma’s life will be announced at a further date. 1915 ~ 2014 Wilfred Johnsen, born April 20, 1915 passed away peacefully in Kelowna on December 25, 2014 at Spring Valley Care Home at the age of 99. He was predeceased by his wife Bessie. Wilf is survived by his daughters Louise (Mason) Dodds and Judy Johnsen, son Peter (Barb) Johnsen, grandchildren: Shannon (Steve) Colle, Thomas Dodds, Amanda Donaldson, Amber (Victor) Genero, great grandsons: Owen and Simon Genero and Sean Colle, niece Diane (Pete) deGroot and family, nephews George (Peggy) Wellwood, Matthew (Anna) Johnsen, numerous other family members and friends. KELLY, RONALD Ron entered into eternal rest December 23, 2014 at the age of 70 after a short illness.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife Martha and two sons Brent (Joanne) and Joseph.

Ron is also survived by his sister Sharon (Gerry Erlam) and will be remembered for his love, humour and gentle ways by other family and supportive friends.

Ron was a keen player and long-time member of the Kelowna Badminton Club. He enjoyed a good game of bridge with his wife, Marty as his partner in life, love and bridge at the Westside Senior and Duplicate Bridge Clubs.

Ron was fond of outdoor adventures, biking, hiking, fishing, and camping. Every activity brought him joy and camaraderie.

At Ron’s request there is no service. ALLAN FABBI Passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2014 in Kelowna, BC. Allan is survived by his two sons, Chris (Karen) and Michael; his five grandchildren, Ben, Max, Rosa, Tyson and Tru. He is also survived by siblings, Phyllis, Lorri and Nadine.

Allan was a gentle, ethical, humorous and patient man. Never one to take a back seat to life, he was an adventurous risk-taker and had many outrageous tales to tell, especially from his youth growing up in Summerland, BC, as an adult in Northern BC and two extended VW van tours through Europe, Africa and the Middle East. For 13 years he was co-owner of Fabbi Auto Parts in West Kelowna and enjoyed connecting with people over the parts counter. He was an avid hiker, cyclist, biker and was active in the Kelowna Folk Club and was the creator of the “Eclecticsans Electric” concert series. Thanks to the Apple Grove staff at Brandt’s Creek Mews, Karla’s Kare and the Chatsworth who were a great support in the last years of Allan’s life. Individual donations can be made in Allan’s memory to “Plan Canada” in lieu of flowers. He was generous, kind and loved by many. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 at Everden Rust Funeral Services, 1910 Windsor Rd, Kelowna. Black Mountain Irrigation District

ADMINISTRATOR The Black Mountain Irrigation District (BMID) is an improvement district operating within the boundaries of the City of Kelowna and the Regional District of Central Okanagan. BMID is an autonomous local government body responsible for the provision of water for the benefit of residents and agricultural users within the community. BMID is the largest improvement district in the Province. As of January 1, 2014 we have a service population of approximately 22,550. We serve approximately 5,273 parcels of land with 5,790 connections, of which an estimated 5,350 are residential with the remainder being commercial, industrial, and institutional connections. In addition, there are over 860 agricultural irrigation connections.

This is the Chief Executive Position for the District, serving as the primary advisor to the 5 member Board of Trustees and providing strategic leadership to ensure the District is operated in a responsible and sustainable manner. The successful candidate will coordinate and review new development within the District, plan and implement system upgrades, monitor maintenance programs and set out Capital Works, Emergency Response, and other plans regarding infrastructure and the provision of water. This position is responsible to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Interior Health Authority, the Ministry of Community, Sport & Cultural Development, the British Columbia Municipal Act and Provincial Improvement District Manual.

This candidate will possess financial acumen, intuitive political judgment, and an understanding of basic engineering designs, environmental approvals and permitting.

The position also requires excellent interpersonal skills and the necessary adaptability and flexibility to liaise with various government representatives, engineers, suppliers, contractors, the media and the public.

OK Dodge revs up fundraising drive A Kelowna auto dealer sees bright futures for students in Okanagan College’s trades programs, prompting the company to invest in the $33-million Trades Training Complex at the Kelowna campus to help make those futures a reality.

Okanagan Chrysler Jeep Dodge has pledged $100,000 to the Okanagan College Foundation for the $7-million Bright Horizons

Building for Skills campaign that supports the expansion and renewal of the trades complex.

“Having run Okanagan Dodge for the past 12 years, and having seen the way Kelowna has embraced my business in that time, I began looking for a way to give back to the community that would truly have an impact,” said Dean McAuley, dealer principal for Okanagan Chrysler Jeep

Reducing the discomfort created by frozen shoulder Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where there is stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint leading to a limited range of motion in the joint.

Frozen shoulder usually only affects one shoulder, but some people may eventually develop it in the other shoulder as well.

This condition usually develops slowly, over a period of months.

Needle Notes JAMES KAUFMAN The shoulder starts out in the painful stage, where pain occurs with movement and the range of motion begins to become limited.

Gradually there is a decrease in pain along with a drastic decrease

in the range of motion of the shoulder.

Frozen shoulder can occur after an injury to the shoulder, a surgery or an arm fracture, or it may occur in people with other health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, thyroid problems, and Parkinson’s disease.

Frozen shoulder is also more common over the

age of 40. With frozen shoulder, the shoulder capsule (the connective tissue in our shoulder joint) becomes inflamed and stiff, which in turn can cause adhesions to develop between the joint’s surfaces and a decrease in the natural lubricating fluids in the joint, all of which contribute to the pain and reduced mobility.

At night the shoulder might hurt when sleeping on the painful side and

there can be a numbness or tingling in the arm and hand. With the limited use and mobility, strength is lost in the surrounding muscles.

The treatment in Western medicine consists of pain management by using painkillers, muscle relaxants and antiinflammatory drugs.

To regain mobility, physiotherapy or acupuncture may be recommended. A frozen shoulder that isn’t treated

Classes range from painting in watercolour, oil, and acrylics, to drawing or working with mixed media. Local professional artists Jim Elwood, Rena Warren, Harry Tonn and Kendra Dixson lead the classes.

Most classes run for six weeks, and cater to absolute beginners, as well as to those at anintermediate skill level. The cost for each six-week-long series is $130 for Kelowna Art Gallery members, $160 for the general public.

We Are Animal Rescuers

Our job is to assist God’s creatures. We were born with the drive to fulfill their needs. We take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection.

We have bought dog food with our last dime. We have patted a mangy head with a bare hand. We have hugged someone vicious and afraid. We have fallen in love a thousand times. And We have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.

We have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends. We don’t often use the word “pet”. We notice those lost at the road side and my heart aches. We will hand raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture. We know of no creature unworthy of our time.

We want to live forever if there aren’t animals in Heaven, but we believe there are. Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?

Some may think we are masters of the animals, but the animals have mastered themselves… something people still haven’t learned. War and abuse make us hurt for the world, but a rescue that makes the news gives us hope for mankind.

We are a quiet but determined army and we are making a difference every day. There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan, nothing more rewarding than saving a life, no higher recognition than watching them thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who, only days ago, was too weak to eat.

By the love of those who we’ve been privileged to rescue, we have been rescued.

We know what true unconditional love really is, for we’ve seen it shining in the eyes of so many, grateful for so little.

We are an Animal Rescuer. Our work is never done.
