January A body found New Year’s Day on Whatcom Road in Abbotsford is confirmed to be that of missing woman Erica Schmidt. Schmidt left the home she shared with her husband Henry on Timberlane Drive on the morning of Oct. 5. A multi-day search was launched that included members of Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue and the Abbotsford Police Department (APD).

The man killed on Jan. 2 in Abbotsford’s first homicide of the year is identified as Matthew Gordon Campbell, 31, known to have ties to the Red Scorpions gang. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirms that Campbell was the victim of the attack. He had sustained severe neck wounds, which IHIT says appeared to be stab injuries, and was taken to hospital, where he died.

IHIT spokesman Sgt. Adam Macintosh says Campbell was known to police for his criminal gang-related history, and the fatal assault is believed to be targeted.

The Abbotsford Heat’s operating deficit for the 201213 season will cost local taxpayers $1.66 million. The City of Abbotsford releases the numbers for year four of the 10-year supply fee agreement between the American Hockey League team and Global Spectrum, which manages the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) on behalf of the city.

The announcement brings the total payout from the city to the hockey team to $5.24 million.

The city will repeal its controversial bylaw against harm reduction measure, after approving the third reading of an amendment removing the prohibition on services such as needle exchanges.

A proposed bylaw to limit the use of propane cannons in Abbotsford was denied provincial approval in June, and council couldn’t find internal agreement on a less stringent set of rules.

Council calls on staff to report on efforts to start a regional starling management program to lessen the impact of the invasive bird species on crops.

A fire at Maan Farms is investigated as suspicious. When Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews arrive on the scene, the main barn on the property is engulfed in heavy flames. At the peak of the blaze, flames shoot about 60 feet into the sky. It takes crews several hours to get the blaze under control. The barn housed the farm’s offices, winery, “country kitchen” and main store.

Gladys Avenue is busy as eviction day arrives for residents of a homeless camp.

The area fills with people, vehicles, carts and recycling company trucks during the eviction of homeless camps along the street. Many residents of the camps spend the day moving items out of the area, following an eviction notice set for July 31 from BC Hydro, which owns the land. A number of citizens turn out with signs expressing support for the homeless.

August The B.C. Ministry of Environment looks into a leak from a local business that poured iron oxide into Matsqui Slough, turning the waterway a reddish-brown colour.

The slough has an intense rust colour at Harris Road, where it passes metres from a sign declaring it a salmon habitat. Iron oxide is a common compound, and is widely used as a colouring agent. It also occurs naturally as rust.

The $25-million infrastructure project to upgrade Highway 11, improve border traffic, and build a new overpass across Vye Road is delayed. When first announced, the project was expected to go to construction in 2014, with completion in the fall of 2016. The timeline is adjusted because the city is still negotiating agreements with CP and Southern Rail to cross the rail tracks at McConnell Road, and the process has taken longer than anticipated.

A decades-old cold case investigation is back on the front page when Garry Taylor Handlen, 67, is arrested in Surrey and charged with the first-degree murders of KathrynMary Herbert, 11, of Matsqui in 1975 and Monica Jack, 12, of Merritt in 1978. Police say that Handlen had been a “person of interest” early in the investigations into the two murders, but it had taken years to gather enough evidence to support charges.When Handlen makes his first court appearance in provincial court in December, gasps are heard from the 30 or so family members of the two girls as they see him for the first time.

An avian flu outbreak in Abbotsford and surrounding areas prompts several countries, to close their borders to local poultry products. The virus has now been

detected at eight Abbotsford farms.

Seven countries have now imposed restrictions on Canadian poultry, including the U.S. and Mexico.

Officials stress that avian influenza poses little danger to humans, and that all poultry is safe when prepared correctly.

Police reveal that the woman whose body was discovered was discovered in Mill Lake Park in July died from inhaling the contents of “gas duster” used to clean electronic equipment.

A blue ribbon panel on crime reduction has urged the province to concentrate even more on the few prolific offenders who commit most offences and expand drug addiction treatment and services for the mentally ill.

Chaired by Abbotsford South MLA and criminologist Darryl Plecas, the panel appointed

by Justice Minister Suzanne Anton also urges the province to appoint a senior crime fighting leader to get different agencies to work better together.

The province has already passed legislation that will allow it to force holdout municipalities to join specialized policing teams, such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The panel report said lack of access for drug and alcohol addiction treatment was “a major issue” it heard across the province, and was told that in Port Hardy, for example, 500 people needed treatment but there were only six treatment beds.

“The lack of funding for abstinence-based and other recovery support programs was described as a serious issue everywhere and as one of the main reasons for the high rates of recidivism observed across the province amongst offenders suffering from substance abuse disorder.”

The report recommends spending more money on drug addiction treatment and mental health services, citing estimates that every dollar spent curing addiction cuts drug related-crime and justice costs by up to $7, and $12 if health care costs are counted.

The report also calls for a task force to probe problems with the proliferation of unlicensed and sometimes “predatory” drug recovery houses.

It noted there are 240 drug recovery houses in the Fraser Health region but just eight are properly licensed.

Great West because one of my co-workers showed me a tennis scrapbook of old newspaper clippings and pictures she had collected over the years.

“Reading through them I discovered that the tennis club had been around since 1978 and there was a long history of indoor tennis in Abbotsford.

There weren’t very many indoor tennis clubs in Canada in the ’70s and early ’80s. I scanned the clippings into my computer and also came across more pictures when one of the offices at Great West was renovated.

“I have been going to The Reach gallery in Abbotsford every year and going through the newspaper archives to find any more tennis articles and pictures so I can add to the photo book every year. The book roughly covers 40 years of tennis history in Abbotsford.”

This Christmas season, 80 Abbotsford preschool and kindergarten students joined 2,000 Wind and Tide preschoolers from across the Lower Mainland to partner with Union Gospel Mission (UGM) in providing essential food items and gifts for 56 low-income families.

Rachel Cram, founding director of Wind and Tide Schools, prompts her students each Christmas to learn about the needs in their own communities and to play a part in solving those needs.

She does so through UGM’s Gifts of Hope initiative, where each year her students assemble holiday hampers for families in need.

In November, each school received a list of

much-needed food items, as well as information about the gender, age, interests and hobbies of each family member.

The students at Wind and Tide brought donations from home, carefully chose toys and gifts, and watched the hampers fill up.

Each hamper is packed with all of the food items needed to prepare a Christmas dinner and includes gift cards to purchase a turkey, groceries and dairy as well as a personalized gift for each family member. UGM delivers the hampers to families in Vancouver’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

First Night celebration at Tradex Abbotsford residents looking to ring in the New Year with people of all ages can gather at Tradex (1190 Cornell St.) for the First Night Celebration on Dec. 31.

The event runs from 5 p.m. until 12 a.m. Admission is $10.71

An Abbotsford Police officer who was accused of fracturing a man’s finger during an arrest in January of this year will not be charged, according to the provincial Criminal Justice Branch (CJB).

The CJB made the announcement on Dec. 23, saying there was not enough evidence to conclude that the officer used excessive force or that the complainant’s finger was broken during the arrest.

The incident took place on Jan. 28, 2014 and was then investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which subsequently submitted a re-

According to the CJB statement, both the complainant’s sister and girlfriend indicated to police that a week prior to the arrest, the man had punched a hole in a closet door at his sister’s residence.

He complained about his injured hand for the rest of the week, the girlfriend stated.

Suddenly on Tues. Dec. 16, 2014 at ARH, Lorraine, wife of Fred of Abbotsford, passed away. Lorraine was truly the most loving, compassionate and generous person. Her thoughtfulness impacted many people’s lives. All who knew hew were truly blessed as she touched all their hearts. She is dearly missed by our families and friends. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, after a lengthy, courageous battle with Leukemia. Bernice was born in Winnipeg Beach to George and Christina Gray and spent her youth growing up in Manitoba. After marriage, starting a family and a successful career in Real Estate in Winnipeg, Bernice, Al and family moved to Abbotsford in 1980 settling here until her recent passing.

Bernice was the glue to her family in countless ways. Ever the caretaker to all, giving unconditionally of her love, time and talents. She will be missed beyond words can express. Taken too soon, she leaves behind her devoted, loving husband of 50 years Al Otto, her children Sandy (Teri-Lynn) Otto, Randy (Shelley) Otto, Gina (Darren) Chard, and Kara (Chris) Collins, along with their families including 10 grandchildren: Lindsay, Brittney & Randi; Jordan (Mark), Alex, Trenton, Jessica, Kristina, Alissa and Jacob, and great granddaughter Hannah. Bernice’s greatest joy was sharing life with her family and many friends and was most fondly know as “Grammi” to many family and non-family alike.

Bernice and Al enjoyed extensive travel around the world with family and friends making many more friends along the way, wherever their travels took them. Also grieving her loss is brother Tommy and family, along with cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear, close friends. The comfort of our loss is the knowing of heaven’s gain. We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every staff member of Christine Morrison Hospice for the special care and attention Bernice received in the last 4 months her life there. With deep sorrow, we announce the loss, on December 16, of a truly irreplaceable cornerstone of our family.

Darleen Ruth Golke was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 01, 1943; the first child of Elsie and Arnold Golke, and spent her early years on the family farm near the rural community of River Hills, MB. Dar’s formal education progressed from the local 2-room school, to high school in Lacombe, Alberta, then to Andrews University in Michigan for a BA in English Literature and subsequently to the U. of Manitoba for teaching certification. She began teaching in Boissevain, MB, moving to a full-time position at Miles McDonnell Collegiate in Winnipeg, from 1966 - 1969. Dar moved to Toronto in 1969, and from 1970 - 1975 she taught at William Lyon McKenzie Collegiate --one of the newest high schools in Toronto.

Those years were probably the most professionally satisfying of her career, with a progressive administration and bright, inquisitive students providing a rich teaching environment. In 1975, Dar moved back to Winnipeg, married, and embarked on a business venture. Unfortunately, neither marriage nor business survived, and she returned to teaching. In 1978, she joined the staff at Fort Richmond Collegiate, and remained there as teacher / librarian for nearly 25 years.

She proceeded to upgrade her credentials by completing, in 1996, a Master of Library and Information Science degree.

During the years at Fort Richmond Collegiate, Dar made many good friends, none closer than Gail Gowanlock. The two shared a thirst for adventure and joined forces on trips to destinations including China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Cuba, and Mexico.

Many more excursions were pending. Dar’s selfless dedication to family members in times of need was extraordinary: if someone had a problem, Dar could always be relied on to provide direct support and intelligent advocacy. After retirement in 2003, she moved to Abbotsford and devoted much of her energy to caring for her mother. Dar’s watchful presence allowed Mom to remain in her own home until 2013, and saved the rest of the family much stress and worry: we owe her an enormous debt of gratitude for that wonderful gift. Left to mourn are: her mother, Elsie; sister, Morna, brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Barbara; niece, Raena; nephews, Neil and Kyle; uncles, aunts, cousins, and many good friends. She was pre-deceased by her father, Arnold; and brother, Bruce. A memorial celebration will be held in spring 2015, in the Fraser Valley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.

It saddens us to announce the passing of Elsie at the age of 84 years while at Bevan Lodge. She is lovingly remembered by brother Jack (Carol), daughters Carol (Ralph), Sandra (Bill) and Susan (Steve); grandchildren Darren (Ashley) and Sheri (Fred); great grandchildren Hailey and James and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Hank; grandson Michael; siblings Helen, George, Erna, Marion and Ernest. The family would like to thank the staff at Bevan Lodge for their care and support. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Cliff) Houweling and his grandchildren, Jolaine (Ryan), Travis (Brittany), Colin, Larissa (Anthony) Janzen and his 3 great-grandchildren Charliee, Sully and Ivy, his brother-in-law Jack Glazema and sister-in-law Della Feenstra; siblings Klaaske (Henk) Snoek, Sake (Trude) Feenstra, Joke (Jaap) Nauta, Jetty Feenstra, as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada, USA and Holland.

He was predeceased by his wife Audrey, sons Steven and Michael, brothers Lou and Ray, sisters Tena and Vicky, brother-in-law Henry and sister-in-law Anne. A memorial service was held at Trinity Christian Reformed Church, 3215 Trethewey St., Abbotsford BC on Tuesday, December, 30, 2014 at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Nathan Elgersma officiating. Donations in memory of John may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
