Giving back: The Grade 6 leadership students hold up pajamas that they collected for the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter as part of their ‘giving back campaign’. The students, staff and parents of Rimbey Elementary donated 125 pairs of new pajamas to the women’s shelter. Community reaches out to help victims of tragic highway fatality

By Treena Mielke The community of Rimbey is reaching out to show its support for Angus and Rachel Dixon after a tragic accident on Highway 20 claimed the lives of two of their children.

A spokesperson from ATB said a trust fund has been set up for Angus and Rachel Dixon at the Rimbey branch of ATB. People who wish to donate may visit the branch or send email transfers to Sandra VonHollen at gmail.com until the power of

attorney is in place.

Donations may also be made at Game On Oudoors.

The fatalities occurred when a southbound vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle on the highway near Township Road 420 at around 1 p.m. Dec. 21.

The driver and only occupant of the northbound vehicle died at the scene.

Wildrose Party announces new interim leader and critic roster On Dec. 22 the Wildrose Opposition announced Calgary-Fish Creek MLA Heather Forsyth as new interim leader and released an updated critic roster.

The announcement has been fully endorsed by all MLAs of the Wildrose Caucus after being passed by members of the party’s executive committee.

New Year’s resolutions are a timeless tradition Believe it or not, 2015 is but a few days away and Christmas 2014 has already faded into the annals of the past, ready to be stored, once again, in a photograph book of memories.

But, looking ahead, Treena Mielke not back, is what we all On The Other Side must do and it’s almost time to move on to a new year.

And, as the days start to unfold, it will be time, once again, for the country, the province and each and every individual to fill in the blank slate of the yet to be lived days of their lives with responsible decisions which will, hopefully, benefit not only themselves, but their communities, their province and their country as well.

Clinging to such unrealistic expectations is completely naïve of course, but, perhaps, it is not out of the realm of idealism to hope for tiny increments of positive change in the New Year.

The longest journey begins with a single step, and 2015 offers an opportunity for each and every one of us to take that first step to begin our own personal journey towards whatever destination we chose.

I, personally, plan on squeezing in some sort of nap before I begin the journey, again.

Trust me, I’m all about making good and positive changes, but I know I will need lots of energy to do so.

A nap is a good first step, I’m thinking.

And then I will be ready.

I truly believe it is good to stand in the wings of a new year which is about to unfold and reach for limits which are, no doubt, realistically unattainable, but possible.

In my mind, I flip back to my own personal plans, hopes and dreams that I unfailingly make each and every new year.

Lose weight. Learn a new song on the piano every month. Do something nice for someone every day. Exercise at least three times a week. Follow Canada’s food guide. Keep your desk clutter free every day, not just when you can’t stand it anymore. Learn a new skill.

Do not use profanity when driving or at any other time.

Do not gossip.

“Ahhh, what happened to my resolutions?

Even as I write this, imagining the strict regime such resolutions involve, I am fairly confident none of the above will happen.

Life will, no doubt, get in the way and I will fall short of the mark I have set for myself, thereby being all discouraged and ready to quit.

That’s when it’s important to get up, start over, or simply go to Plan B. Delete resolution!

But still, with 2015 an embryo waiting to be born, even with my unfailing track record of incompletion, I am ready to start anew with a fresh list.

And being an eternal optimist, I just keep looking up, which is good because on a clear night in late December, the timeless beauty of the constellations and the stars cut the night sky into a jagged patchwork of perfection.

And, once again l am reminded by the majestic beauty of the night sky that some things such as optimism, hope and New Year’s resolutions are meant to live forever.

And always there will be unexplained beauty, quiet moments of unexpected perfection and even the odd New Year’s resolution that actually gets kept.

So, may you all have the best New Year’s ever and may you all make and keep your own New Year’s resolutions.

County turns down two zoning requests

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Two rezoning applications to Ponoka County were turned down after councillors heard opposition on the matters.

Public hearings on the requests were held Tuesday, Dec. 16 during council’s regular meeting.

The first request came from Kelvin and Jennifer Jones to reclassify approximately five acres of land, on Township Road 432 and Range Road 11, to country residential from agri-

cultural. A portion of the property was already subdivided some years ago, which is normally discouraged in the county’s municipal development plan, stated a letter from West Central Planning Agency.

The agency further said it could not support the proposed zoning but did not have any objections. However, there were two objections from neighbours, one written and one during the hearing.

The second application came from Leo and Jolanda van der Toorn who wanted to split a fiveacre parcel in half.

Located on the corner of Township Road 424 and Range Road 245, there was one letter of opposition to the request from Mike Stretch and Henk Krijger. They felt having two small parcels would not benefit the area.

“Where is the beginning and where is the end?” Kriijger added during the public hearing.

The van der Toorns were not at the hearing so no other comments were made. Reeve Paul McLauchlin suggested the request was not ideal.

“Splitting fives is a tough thing to do,” he said.

Both requests were defeated.

Jess Donald spoke against the request stating with additional subdivisions, dogs cause issues with his cattle. He says dogs usually are not leashed and he had to shoot one some years ago as it was attacking his cattle.

Mr. Jones said the 5-acres is not ideal for farming and would be better suited for residential use.

He added he never objected to neighbours with their subdivision applications.

By June Norvila Ten members of the Bentley District Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Sandy Point RV Resort on the southwest end of Gull Lake on the morning of December 3 around 6:30 a.m. The fire was reported by a neighbor who was awakened by the light and noise.

When crews arrived they found a brand new park-model mobile home at lot #44 fully engulfed in flames. Lacombe had been called but were stood down when it was determined they were not needed.

One concern was a nearby 420-pound propane tank. It was found it to be venting properly so was cooled down and the rest of the propane dispersed.

The home was completely destroyed leaving only charred remains with damage estimated to be around $125,000.

No one was living in the home at the time and there were no injuries. It was interesting to note that the new owners were to take possession later that very day.

The home in the adjoining lot suffered only minor heat damage to windows, flashings, etc.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but doesn’t appear suspicious. It appears the fire may have started in the utility room that housed the hot water tank and furnace.

Crews had arrived with an engine, tender, rescue unit, and utility vehicle. They were on scene for about three hours.

The fire department would like to remind people to be extra careful with fireplaces, heaters, and Christmas decorations at this time of year.

GALISKY (nee Skeels) Thelma Jean Feb. 5, 1940 - Dec. 17, 2014

On February 5, 1940, Lester and Alda Skeels were blessed with an angelic little baby girl named “Thelma”, she completed their family on a little farm outside of Rimbey, AB. Thelma loved the farm life, she cherished all the time with her Mom and Dad, she loved all animals, especially horses.

She grew up as the baby sister of two older brothers (Gerald and Delmer) and an older sister (Louise). She met Dennis Galisky and they were married in 1958 they moved to Prince George and began their family. Soon after their two boys were born, Bob and John. Missing family, they moved back to Rimbey. Dennis and Thelma separated in 1976. This is when Thelma began the journey of raising two teenage boys in a town where everyone knew your name! Thelma worked for Jack Perry at the Rimbey Record and overseen 4 other newspapers. In 1981 The RD Advisor gave Thelma the opportunity to begin a new career in Red Deer with her two boys, -where everyone didn’t know your name!

Thelma loved working with people and always found the good in everyone. Thelma had quite a successful real estate career, with Sutton, C.A.R.E. realty. Thelma was an active member in a few Christian churches, her faith in the Lord was unwavering. In 2000 She rekindled a friendship with a special man, Robert Watts. Over the past few years they travelled together across the US, attended car rallies and numerous visits with old friends.

He was so special to her and treated her like a porcelain doll. Thelma’s health problems began 4 years ago and has steadily worsened over the last year, those who knew her, take comfort in knowing that she was cared for by an amazing, caring and passionate group of people at Villa Marie, RD. She was predeceased by her Mother and Father, brother in law Tommy Sanderson-1998, Dennis Galisky-1986, and her partner Robert Watts- 2013. Left to cherish Thelma’s memory, her two boys, John (Twyla), grandson Conner, Bob (KeriLynn) grandsons Cameron, and Dylan. Her sister, Louise Sanderson, brothers Gerald (Mae) Skeels, Delmer (Joyce) Skeels, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will announce a date for a service in Rimbey in the spring 2015.

BEEBY December, 1930 ~ December, 2014 Dennis Wilfred Beeby of Gull Lake, Alberta, following a long, courageous battle with cancer, lost the battle on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer at the age of 84 years.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Pat; his four children: Dean, Chris, Mary-Ann, and Susan; three grandchildren; and his sister, Tricia Stevens. He will also be remembered for his kindness and joyous laughter by the Burke Family in England and Canada; the Spreadbury Family in Calgary; and his many friends in Canada and the United States. Dennis was predeceased by his son, Matthew.

“Dennis will be greatly missed.”

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Dennis’ Life was held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Father Gabriel Udeh officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer.

If friends desire, memorial tributes in Dennis’ Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, #101, 6751 - 52 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4K8.

Central Alberta Buccaneers gear up for 2015 season with new head coach The Central Alberta Buccaneers are well underway in preparation for their upcoming AFL season. With the signing of a Devon Hand as head coach, the Bucs are entering the 2015 season with a new direction and vision. By fostering a football culture of commitment and accountability and recruiting a large and competitive roster, the team will “allow as much fun as possible without compromising the work it takes to win a title,” said Coach Hand. “This will be a program guys want to play in.”

Defensive end Ian Keetch, former Rimbey Spartan, is heading into his sixth season as a Buccaneers and “has loved every second of it.” Keetch has found his stride in the AFL, being named to the All-Star team for 2013 and 2014 as well as crowned the defensive MVP in 2013. While he is one of the league’s premier d-linemen, Keetch admits that his initial transition into the league was daunting. “It was a hell of a transition from playing football with [high school] boys to playing with the men of the AFL.” Keetch credited his recent success to Coach Hand who swapped Keetch to the defensive side of the ball. “Hunting quarterbacks is natural for me and [Hand] saw that.” When asked why others should join the Bucs, Keetch said, “I use it as therapy. It works for me.”

After falling short of the 2014 AFL title, the Bucs are continuing to bolster its roster size and talent pool. With in-

creased depth, the team will be better able to endure injuries as well as avoid over-fatiguing players. To find these additional recruits, the Bucs will operate booths at trade shows during the spring (Ponoka, Lacombe, and Stettler), host its first annual Bucs Recruitment Night, and continue to have a presence in the Central Albertan community via fundraisers and charity events.

The Bucs will continue its partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ponoka by entering a team into the Bowl for Kids fundraiser. At this event, participants raise pledges, which greatly contribute to BBBS’s yearly operating funds, and bowl for game or two. This will be the Bucs fourth year participating in this event and the team aims at raising $1200 for Big Brothers.

After completing its fourth teamblood-drive on Dec. 13 (which included 17 blood donators), the Buccaneers sent out a friendly challenge to the rest of the AFL to see which club is more willing to bleed for Alberta. On Feb. 7, 2015, the nine teams that comprise the Alberta Football League will collectively roll up their sleeves in their respective blood clinics in order to donate. Fans and interested players are encouraged to participate.

The Bucs Recruitment Night will function as a meet and greet for interested potential players. Coaching staff and veteran players will be more than willing to share information regarding

the team, its culture, its history, and, most importantly, its goals for 2015. While an exact location has not yet been decided upon, the Recruitment Night will happen on Jan. 24. For more details, follow the team’s website at www.cabuce.com.

When asked about the 2015 expectations, Coach Hand said: “When we strap up in red and black this

upcoming summer, players will be challenged to leave it all on the field for the better of the team. There will be no excuses. There will be no shortcuts. When the summer turns to fall and the dust settles, players will be able to look each other in the eye and say they laid it on the line for the team. That is what 2015 Central Alberta Buccaneers will be all about.”
