Celebration of light

City, band work to improve interactions

Meeting: Discussions involve protocol agreement, highway, Mount Ida, tourism and more.

A new way of relating is in the making.

Members of the Neskonlith Indian Band’s economic development corporation, some of the band’s political representatives and most members of Salmon Arm council as well as the city’s chief administrative officer met at the Prestige Harbourfront Resort Thursday, Dec. 18.

The meeting was hosted by Ska’tsin Resources Ltd., the band’s business arm, which invited Salmon Arm representatives to a meet and greet.

Neskonlith Chief Judy Wilson explained the purpose of the meeting, in terms of economic development.

“The intent was to look at the potential opportunities and address issues with regard to any highway corridor development or any of the continued projects in the Neskonlith-Salmon Arm areas.”

Ongoing issues included highways, some of the culturally significant areas such as Mount Ida, the Salmon River delta, and waterways and trails.

“How we engage economically through our corporation and the (Salmon Arm Economic Development) Society,” Wilson said.

Trails were a big topic, one she found very positive.

representatives attended in order to follow up on a protocol with the City of Salmon Arm. Wilson said the city and the band plan to hold a forum before the end of March in order to work towards an agreement.

Cooper noted that Neskonlith band member Louis Thomas has been acclaimed to the Neskonlith band council for the Salmon Arm area and he would like to be more involved in the work of Salmon Arm Council.

She said he is welcome to sit in on the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society and council’s Environmental Advisory Council.

“He’s more than welcome...,” Cooper said. “Anytime he

Overall, Cooper said, “it was a very positive meeting. Everybody from our side went away feeling good about the meeting. Our desire is to get together in March.

We will come with our thoughts on what a communication agreement or protocol will look like,” she said, adding that she expects creating one will be a process rather than an initial agreement.

Wilson thought the timing for the meeting was right.

“I think most people thought it was timely,” she said.

“There’s a willingness to have further dialogue on the issues and look at a community forum.”

Three people are vying for the position of chief of the Neskonlith Indian Band.

Along with incumbent Chief Judy Wilson, also running are Bonnie Thomas and Randy Narcisse.

Narcisse and Thomas have both held the position of band councillor previously.

Running for a councillor position are several incumbents as well as several newcomers.

The incumbents running are: Frank Deneault, Joan Manuel-Hooper, Art Anthony, Randy Sam and Karen R. August.

Newcomers joining the race are: Fay Ginther, Tracy Holloway, Renee Narcisse and Gary Wiens.

Louis Thomas has already been declared elected as Salmon Arm councillor because he was the lone candidate.

Nominations for council positions closed on Dec. 6 and the election will take place on Thursday, Jan. 22.

The count will be held at 8 p.m. at Neskonlith Hall in Chase and is open to band members.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, a ceremonial ground-breaking was held at the Dabell Street site of Sicamous’ future water treatment plant. Participating in the event were Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes, Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo and Sicamous Mayor Terry Rysz – representing the three funding partners behind the $7.9 million project.

Each of the government representatives took the opportunity to speak to the project, reflecting on its importance as well as the importance of the partnership that’s making the project happen.

“This has been a long time coming for the residents of Sicamous and we are excited

to finally be moving forward with this project. With the help of the federal and provincial governments and residents of Sicamous, we are now able to anticipate the completion of the water treatment plant in the fall of 2015,” states Rysz in a Dec. 17 news release.

The same release states work has paused for the winter and will resume in the spring. However, in speaking with the Market News after the event, Rysz noted work on the project has, in fact, been long underway.

“They’re already fully into this project now and so far, it’s going on time and it’s on budget and it’s coming along quite well,” said Rysz.

creeks, and the subsequent flooding from Shuswap and Mara lakes. The new facility will include a state-of-the-art three-filter membrane filtration system, complete with backup electrical generation, a secondstage recovery system and solids accumulation pond for the collection of waste byproduct.

“Once complete, the upgraded facility will help protect the quality of the region’s water supply and alleviate pressure caused by two significant floods, thus assuring continued access to safe, clean drinking water for residents,” states the release.

Rysz says the project is expected to be complete and operational by early fall 2015.

“I think this community is going to be very excited once it’s done,” said Rysz.

Bah humbug to holiday colds

My foot!

More like a sniffling, sneezing, coughing, hot-to-shivering and back again, whining, snivelling fight with a malicious virus.

I am beating this shapeless thing that ran over me like a Mack truck and stole my energy.

But it took its toll.

Night one: drinking plenty of fluids and resting. Make that trying to. Up every hour as a result of increased fluids and popping oil of oregano capsules.

Who knew oregano could cause such indigestion?

Day two: my passion for Greek food thoroughly quelled, I decide the combined, ‘earthy’ taste of goldenseal and echinacea is a more favourable accompaniment to my sootheyour-symptoms vitamin C cocktail.

Night two begins with a quick descent into much-needed sleep.

Less than an hour later, a choking cough wakes me up snorting like a poorly played

trumpet, scaring my rescue dog Charlie into a howl.

As he always does when he’s afraid, Charlie tries to get as close to me as possible. In this case, convincing him that parking his behind on my head is neither consoling nor helpful is impossible.

I desperately need to sleep and consider whether I can turf him out the bedroom window without getting out of bed. (Just kidding.)

Sneeze by snivel and oh-so-attractive with a tissue stuck up my nose, I sleep in half-hour increments.

Major headache and nose running uncontrollably, I reach for a box of tissues, setting off an avalanche, as phone, glasses, hand cream and more crash to the floor.

Putting the light on so as to avoid stepping on my glasses, I stumble down the stairs to grab another box of tissues and, yes, drink more fluids – all the while repeating my new mantra, “I will beat this!”

Back in bed, I slip clean tissues under my pillows, handy for the next onslaught.

It arrives an hour later in the form of 15, count them, 15 consecutive sneezes.

Charlie is once again on high bark alert and runs noisily off down the stairs to the front window to protect me from some intruder.

The barking hurts

my head, I reach for the Ibuprofen.

Eventually Charlie concludes we are safe from outside threats and patters back up the stairs.

I fall into another fitful sleep, only to waken to the need for more tissues – many more tissues.

No longer carefully placing used ones tidily in a bag, I toss them willy-nilly to the floor beside the bed.

What the heck, Charlie has been robbing every waste container in bedroom and bathrooms, leaving a trail of demolished tissues upstairs and down. This will make it easier for him. And really, my throbbing head doesn’t care anymore.

Day three dawns brighter – no rain at least.

Ah, but the sneezing continues, my tissue contingency diminishes but my ‘vocabulary’ expands.

Charlie, bored out of his mind and missing his daily walks, tears around the house, skidding around corners and digging his claws into the living room carpet.

Day five: I am in the upright position and at work.

Day nine: Still at work, still sniffing and snivelling and filled with compassion for anyone else who is suffering with “just a cold.”

After all, misery does love company.

Rural roads require action

There is no question the provincial government has done a lot with the North Okanagan’s highways, when you consider upgrades to highways 6 and 97A, as well as the upper-level route between Oyama and Winfield. But there are a lot of problems once you get off the major routes.

The Electoral Area Advisory Committee has provided the Ministry of Transportation with a list of projects it wants to see tackled over the next 10 years.

The projects include the resurfacing of the Baxter bridge in rural Lumby and a traffic light at Highway 97B and Springbend Road in rural Enderby.

Vernon residents who head out to Mabel Lake Provincial Park for the summer well understand the need for resurfacing the Lumby-Mabel Lake Road.

“There are parts that should be upgraded and are dangerous,” said Rick Fairbairn, rural Lumby director.

The directors’ demands also include two projects that would improve safety at two high-profile intersections in Greater Vernon, Highway 97 and Stickle Road and Highway 97 and Birnie Road. Both have been the site of fatalities or extremely serious accidents and it is time for the ministry to take both intersections seriously.

The director for rural Falkand-Salmon ValleyRanchero in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Rene Talbot’s longtime calls for improvements to rural roads has seemingly fallen on deaf ears.

Some may question why directors are lobbying Victoria for action, but roads and highways in areas outside of municipalities fall specifically under the mandate of the Ministry of Transportation. Residents in rural communities pay taxes to the province and expect a certain level of service in return. While the ministry is developing a 10-year transportation plan, let’s hope that it doesn’t take that long to improve safety for motorists in the North Okanagan.

Dinner makes up for dashed expectations There is a wonderful, childlike sense of anticipation connected to Christmas. After all, it is the season of giving, and what child doesn’t look forward to Christmas morning with a certain amount of anticipation, if not expectation.

I was certainly no different as a child. I remember wanting a Daisy Spittin’ Image Winchester Model 94 BB gun so bad I could taste it. I never got it. After that, my focus sort of turned to anticipation of Christmas dinner. Little has changed.

Few things in life appeal to me more than roast turkey with creamy mashed potatoes, candied carrots, golden waxed beans, wild rice stuffing and homemade cranberry sauce – not the stuff from a can – and real gravy made in the roaster from the turkey drippings.

I admit, I was sort of disappointed when I didn’t get the BB gun, but I do remember how my spirits were soon lifted by the smell of a turkey roasting in the oven.

While I have never actually cooked a turkey by myself, I have helped out in the

My specialty has become making the stuffing. This has come about in part by people letting me help out in some small way, while trying to keep me out of the way at the same time. Be that as it may, I still make a pretty good stuffing.

A proper stuffing recipe comes about, in large part through trial and error. Not all of my attempts at making the stuffing have been noteworthy. So I offer this simple recipe more as a basic guideline.

Stuffing, and therefore the specific amounts of ingredients, will vary according to the size of the bird and per-

sonal taste.

Start with about six cups of large bread crumbs and one cup of fine bread crumbs. I make my own bread crumbs by drying out Blue Canoe bread in the oven. This can be done a day or two ahead of time.

I also prepare my wild rice a day or two ahead of time – about a cup of wild rice in the steamer, which I then put it in the fridge until I’m ready.

When the time comes to make my stuffing, I start by chopping up three or four stalks of celery that have been halved length-wise and placed in a pot to boil in water. Next, I fry up about a dozen medium-sized mushrooms in butter. When cooked they are set aside in a bowl.

When the celery is cooked enough to be soft but not mushy, it too is placed in a bowl. Do not pour out the water – it is the perfect liquid for the gravy. Add two or three generous globs of butter (one glob equals about two tablespoons) to the celery water and let simmer at a low heat until melt-

ed. I like to add about half a cup of turkey drippings to the simmering liquids. I then add about three finely chopped dried apricots.

Once the apricots are soft, I add the celery back into the liquid, adding about half of a very finely chopped onion.

It is now time to thoroughly mix all the ingredients into a large bowl. First the bread crumbs, to which is added the wild rice, diced mushrooms and two eggs whisked.

Then I add the spices. I use sage, salt and pepper – that’s all. The amount is strictly a matter of taste, but too much sage is too much, where not quite enough isn’t the end of the world.

Slowly mix in the liquid until the bread crumbs are damp. Too much liquid and the stuffing will turn into one big ball of spicy dough.

Once everything is mixed together, put the stuffing into the bird or a covered casserole dish and bake it in the oven for an hour or so before serving. It is a simple to prepare but tasty stuffing – even for a guy like me.

The Danish claim to Santa GLOBAL VIEWS Gwynne Dyer Saint Nicholas (also known as Santa Claus, Kris Kringle or Father Christmas) has had to put up with a lot over the years. After the latest blow, he may not show up at all next week.

First they decided that he had to reside at the North Pole, where the temperature often falls to 50 degrees below zero and there are several months of complete darkness each year just when the workload peaks. The south coast of what is now Turkey, where St. Nick originally lived and worked, was much nicer.

Then in a series of ads in the 1930s the Coca-Cola Company crystallized his image as a fat old man wearing clothes that are frankly a fashion disaster. And now, as a final indignity, they are trying to make him a Danish citizen.

On Monday, Denmark submitted documents claiming the North Pole as Danish territory (since the Danish kingdom includes Greenland). It was a “historic and important milestone” for Denmark, said Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard. It was also provocative and point-

less, but he forgot to mention that.

The Danish government does not actually want or need the North Pole, and does not imagine that it would derive any practical benefit from “owning” it. It is just responding to the equally baseless Canadian declaration last December that the North Pole is sovereign Canadian territory, or at least that the seabed 4,000 metres beneath it is.

The way that claim came about is quite instructive. Canada has a huge archipelago of Arctic islands, and for years Canadian government scientists have been gathering evidence to support a Canadian claim to exclusive economic rights over the seabed of the Arctic Ocean adjacent to those islands. All five countries that border the Arctic Ocean have been preparing similar claims to the seabed off their own coasts.

Until last December, Canada made no claim to the North Pole. It was only days before the country was due to submit its final claim to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government finally woke up.

The claim wasn’t in the original submission because Canada has no real case in international law. Even if the Commission ends up accepting the contention by Russia, Canada and Denmark (on behalf of its Greenland territory) that the underwater Lomono-

sov Ridge extends their respective bits of the continental shelf into the central Arctic Ocean, the principle of “equidistance” would give the North Pole itself to the Danes or the Russians.

For the past nine years, Prime Minister Harper has travelled to the Canadian Arctic every summer to give the Canadian media a “photo op.” He promises new ice-breakers and an Arctic naval base, he stands on a submarine as fighters fly overhead, he sits in the cockpit of a Canadian F-18, he shoots a rifle in a military exercise – every year a new image of him personally defending Canadian sovereignty from some unspecified threat.

So when Harper’s minions belatedly realized that the government’s scientists and civil servants had not included the North Pole in Canada’s claim to the Commission, Harper slammed the brakes on and demanded that they rewrite it. He will have been told by the experts that Canada has no legal case – but he also knows that by the time that becomes clear to the public, many years from now, he will no longer be in office.

Canada didn’t submit its final claim last December after all. The poor boffins in Ottawa are struggling to reformulate it to include the North Pole, while Harper trumpets his determination to protect Canadian “rights.” And the Danes, who were previously willing to

let sleeping dogs lie, have now responded by making their own rather more plausible claim.

The Russians may be next. President Vladimir Putin also likes to be photographed in the Arctic, surrounded by military kit and bravely defending Russian sovereignty. It’s getting ridiculous – but might it also be getting out of hand?

Probably not. There has been much loose talk about allegedly huge reserves of oil and gas under the Arctic seabed, but not much actual drilling is likely to happen in the challenging conditions of the Arctic Ocean when the oil price is below $80 per barrel. (It’s currently in the mid-$50s, and will probably be down there for a long time.)

There’s really nothing else up there that’s worth fighting over.

Louise Barber is shouting out a special thank you to all who attended and supported the CP Rail Holiday Train at Notch Hill on Monday night, Dec. 15.

The railway presented Jim Chisholm, who

is in charge of Sorrento’s food bank, with a cheque for $4,000.

A crowd of between 900 to 1,000 people donated close to 3,500 pounds of food as well as cash donations.

The Holiday Train has stopped at Notch

Hill for about eight years, due to the efforts of Sue P. Moore and Marcha Adams, from the Notch Hill Town Hall Association, says Barber.

Barber says proceeds of the association’s Christmas raffle will

go to a new roof for the community hall.

Christmas craft winners were first – Janice Darbyson, second – Adrian Romyn and third – Stacey Williams. The 50/50 prize of $42.50 was won by Ian McLafferty.

Rollover sends Blind Bay woman to hospital male driver from Blind Bay lost control of her vehicle. It struck a culvert and came to rest on its roof, trapping the driver for about halfan-hour. The woman was taken to hospital

with non-life threatening injuries.

Robbery In the overnight hours of Wednesday, Dec. 17, a theft oc-

curred on Centennial Drive in Blind Bay. A lock was cut on a utility trailer and several thousand dollars worth of tools were stolen.

An investigation into the robbery continues.

Digestive Health 101: Feeling good on the inside and out (NC) The digestive system is best described as the body’s engine. Did you know that every day, eight different organs work together to process the essential nutrients needed for energy, growth, and rejuvenation?

Digestion is fundamental to good health, but a high proportion of Canadians – as many as 20 million, or 56% of the population – regularly suffer from digestive problems like heartburn, constipation and cramps.

According to Dr. Taz Bhatia, an integrative health expert, as well as a frequent contributor to the Dr. Oz Show, and the author of the new Random House book called The 21-Day Belly Fix, digestive discomfort should not be considered inevitable.

“Even though many

people experience digestive problems on a regular basis, there is a stigma that causes us to be embarrassed by them,” she points out. “Therefore, we are often reluctant to seek treatment – and that can only complicate matters. My advice to any patient is to do your body a favour and make the basic lifestyle changes that can lead to optimal digestive health, and seek extra help when you need it.”

Dr. Taz recommends the following tips for healthy digestion: 1. Fibre, fibre, and more fibre. A balanced diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, keeps food moving through the digestive tract.

2. Drink water. Staying hydrated is also a fundamental component of good health. Drink-

ing water throughout the day and avoiding carbonated beverages will help ensure that the digestive tract is lubricated, which facilitates the flow of food.

3. Know when to seek treatment. When the body is dehydrated, the intestines compensate by drawing water out of food. This in turn leads to constipation, a com-

mon digestive disorder that affects one in four Canadians and is best defined as infrequent or difficult bowel movements.

A recent study by the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation with support from RestoraLAX, reveals that many people who suffer from constipation report a negative impact on their productivity and overall quality of life.

According to Dr. Taz, the first line of defense against occasional constipation is to help water work in the digestive system more effectively.

Marina plan gets back on track

Sicamous council is supporting the redevelopment of a 60-slip marina where work began prior to receiving the necessary permit.

On Dec. 10, council voted unanimously in favour of issuing a development permit for the redevelopment of the marina in the channel belonging to The Riverside condos. Final issuance is subject to an amended licence of occupation from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations for the water tenure needed to accommodate the marina.

Sicamous community planning and approving officer, Mike Marrs told council the ministry is close to granting that tenure, and the intent of the resolution before council, to support the

development permit, was to help expedite the process.

“Part of the urgency of this is the owners have a limited time frame – a window of opportunity as it’s referred to – established by fisheries to complete the marina before a certain date,” explained Marrs.

Marrs said the redevelopment is now in compliance with the district’s official community plan and S2 marine zoning. That’s after a complaint triggered an investigation by the district on prior work that had commenced on the marina, resulting in a stopwork order from the district. In his report to council, Marrs says the notice was issued for “failure to obtain a development permit in compliance with development permit requirements of the official community plan and

not having been issued an amended water tenure” from the province.

Staff has since been working with the ministry and the applicant to resolve compliance issues.

“That said, there are issues surrounding this marina, but they’re outside the jurisdiction of the district to deal with, and will have to be dealt with by the individual parties involved,” said Marrs.

In his report, Marrs explains that some Riverside strata owners are concerned a portion of a neighbouring marina might be encroaching into the proposed amended water tenure.

However, having been in communication with the province, Marrs states the issue is not related to the tenure, and the encroachment issue has “no bearing upon the issuance of this development permit.”

The Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team and the BC RCMP are warning potential snowmobile thieves that bait sleds are everywhere. Just like with a bait car – steal one and go to jail.

Throughout the peak winter season police detachments from across B.C. will be deploying bait sleds to help combat theft.

“Snowmobiles have evolved over the years where some are now as expensive as entry level automobiles,” says RCMP Insp. Peter Jadis.

Similar to other bait vehicles, if a sled is stolen police are able to remotely track it in order to recover the snowmobile and arrest those responsible for its theft.

Proper documenta-

tion can help any sled owner, especially when it comes to returning recovered property that had been stolen. As of Nov. 17, 2014, all sled owners can register their machines through their insurance broker and must do so after June 1, 2015 for operation on Crown land.

Auto insurance is also required if operating on a highway.

In reviewing Marrs’ report, Coun. Jeff Mallmes noted the ends of the fingers of the proposed marina appear to be touching the navigable water line. Marrs explained the navigation line forms the western border of the water tenure

so as to meet Fisheries and Oceans Canada and riparian areas requirements.

“The marina is designed so slips are all in the tenure area so there’s no opportunity for moorage out there,” said Marrs.

Pages was a very level-headed, reliable man who worked vigorously at every project he undertook, whether

it was fundraising for a valuable cause, patrolling at night to keep town safe, campground hosting to make visitors feel comfortable or building something that would benefit others.

TNRD offers bursary for short films The Thompson-Nicola Film Commission (TNFC), in partnership with the Kamloops Independent Short Shorts Film Festival, is offering an annual Short Film Development Bursary starting in 2015.

The Short Film Development Bursary is worth $300 and, depending upon the quality of the applications, there may be opportunities for a secondplace bursary of $200.

The winner will be announced at the Kamloops Film Festival, which is held annually in March at the Kamloops Paramount Theatre.

“We felt the idea of an annual bursary will help new and established filmmaking enthusiasts to jumpstart their projects and improve creative

options,” said Steven Rice, TNFC Chairman and TNRD Director for Electoral Area “I” (Blue Sky Country).

Applicants for the Short Film Development Bursary must submit a short written description of their film, which must be less than five minutes, and how the money will be used. They may also include other materials, such as pictures or documents or songs, to help convey the concept.

Applicants must be residents of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and the subject matter must be about a person, place, attraction, event, or tell a story relevant to the Thompson-Nicola region.

All applications for the 2015 bursary must be submitted to

the TNFC by Monday, Feb. 16, either by mail to 465 Victoria St., Kamloops, B.C., V2C 2A9; or dropped off at the Fourth Floor above the Kamloops Library; or emailed to

Roadhouse to return Former Salmon Arm residents Voni and Mike Grindler wrapped up a successful run of their Jupiter Productions’ Rock & Romance at the Roadhouse dinner theatre show at the Quaaout Lodge, but they will be back.

There were a number of audience members who came out to catch up with Voni from her days with Shuswap Theatre, and former Salmon Arm Secondary students who knew Mike from his days as their industrial arts teacher.

“It is always a pleasure to bring some of Vancouver’s most

talented musical artists to the Shuswap to perform in our original shows at the Quaaout Lodge each year,” says Voni.

The show featured songs from the roadhouse era when hardworking musicians would ‘hit the road’ and tour the roadside bars and taverns, playing to some rough characters on the way to successful musical careers.

With the songs made famous by names such as Patsy Kline, Hank Williams, the Doobie Brothers, the Doors, Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, the Eagles, and more, the show has something for music

lovers to keep their toes tapping and storytelling to pull it all together.

There were five performances of Rock & Romance at the Roadhouse over two weekends. With positive feedback and good ticket sales, Voni is pleased to have signed on to bring the show back for three encore performances at the Quaaout Lodge on March 27, 28 and 29, 2015.

BECKER, CLARENCE February 13, 1925 – December 16, 2014 Clarence passed away on December 16, 2014 with family members at his side, at Hillside Manor in Salmon Arm, BC at the wonderful age of 89.

Clarence was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and grandson, David. He is survived by his children; Ron (Joanne), Dale (Betty), Cheryl Hendrickson (Jerry), Brian (Kerrie), Karen Turner (Randy), Leanne Kulchyski (Brett), Laurie Farrell (Kim) and Rick (DeeDee); several grandchildren and even more great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Chase Community Hall on December 20, 2014 at 11 am.

With great sadness, announce the we passing of Marvin Lundeen on December 13, 2014 at the age of 90 after a year-long struggle with lung cancer.

Marvin was born in Govan, SK and in 1930 homesteaded with his family in the BC Peace River country where he grew up. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 and met his future wife, Frances Miles, in 1945 while both served at Tofino. They were married in 1946.

With Frances’s support, Marvin earned a law degree from UBC and was called to the Bar in 1951. He practiced law in Dawson Creek, BC until 1974. He was a founding member of the BC Law Foundation, appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1971 and appointed a Provincial Court judge in 1974, based in Salmon Arm until his retirement in 1990.

Marvin relocated to Port Coquitlam, BC in 2010.

Marvin was an avid curler, golfer and, earlier in life, horseman and was active in many organizations.

Above all, he valued family and enjoyed his three children, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, his sister and family, and his many nieces, nephews and their families. Marvin is predeceased by his parents, Swan and Olivia, brother Harold, sister Darleen and his beloved wife Frances. He is deeply missed by sister Mardelle Blanchette (Marcel), sons Richard (Gabriele) and Barry (Victoria) and daughter Trudi, grandchildren Jeff (Laura), Amanda (Nathan), Rob (Jessica), Mark (Jamie), Riley, Jennifer and Lisa, and great grandchildren Chantal, Austin, Malakai, Freya, Olive, Adreanna, Noah and Leo. Adreanna and Leo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or the BC Cancer Foundation. A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held in Salmon Arm this summer.

MAXINE MADELINE YERBURY It is with sadness that the family of Maxine Yerbury announces her peaceful passing with her family by her side at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on Saturday December 13, 2014 at the age of 80 years.

Maxine was born in Rocky Mountain House, AB on August 19, 1934, this is where she spent most of her childhood until moving to Calgary at the age of 14. While living in Calgary, Maxine began dancing and soon she had a dance partner, Tom Yerbury. Maxine and Tom where married in 1956 and together they have spent 58 wonderful years, travelling to 17 different countries and experiencing and loving life to the fullest.

Maxine and Tom were blessed with twins Robert and Susan, as a family they spent many summer holidays camping, fishing and spending time together. In 1987 Maxine and Tom moved to Salmon Arm to enjoy retirement and the Shuswap.

Maxine continually kept herself busy with crafts, gardening, bowling and she still enjoyed and loved her dancing into her retirement years.

Maxine will be forever loved and missed by her family; husband Tom, her twins; Robert (Jamie) of Victoria, BC, Susan (Tony) of Edmonton, AB and her two grandchildren, Matthew and Aaron.

Maxine also leaves to mourn her passing her three sisters; Phyllis, Shirley and Roxiena.

The family would sincerely like to thank the Doctors and Staff of Shuswap Lake General Hospital for all the love and care shown towards Maxine. Also a thank you to the WeCare and Community Care staff for all the constant support the family received over the past five months.

To friends and family who called or dropped by during Maxine’s illness and after her passing, your thoughtfulness is appreciated and will always be remembered.

Respecting Maxine’s wish there will be no formal service.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent in memory of Maxine to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation.
