Hunters protest shift favouring non-residents By Tom Fletcher As B.C. hunters packed rooms to protest regulations giving guide-outfitters and their out-of-province clients a larger share of big-game permits, the provincial government argues that the shift is being exaggerated. The latest increase in the share of guide permits to hunt moose, grizzly bear and other restricted animals in limited-entry hunting areas of B.C. totals 618 “hunting opportunities” across the province per year, says a statement from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Based on the success rate of hunts for different species, “this model represents a transfer of approximately 186 animals from residents to guides.” The B.C. Wildlife Federation’s estimate that the wild game allocation policy could result in 5,000 fewer hunting permits for resident hunters under limited entry hunting rules is “not accurate,” the ministry says. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said in an interview he made the decision on the latest allocation after a long consultation where the BCWF and the Guide Outfitters Association of B.C. couldn’t agree. The decision was to provide certainty for guide businesses, but also took away guides’ rights to pool regional game allotments and hunt in vacant guiding territories. “There are arguments over the number, depending on which base you use, and I expect those arguments will continue,” Thomson said. “At the end of the day we all want the same thing, which is healthy wildlife populations.” BCWF hosted hunter meetings in Kelowna and Langley this week, and spokesman Jesse Zeman said hunters were lined up out the door in Langley. He said the latest changes are part of a longerterm shift going back more than a decade that has seen a loss of harvest share for resident hunters. B.C. hunters are concerned that the share
reserved for guide-outfitters is now higher than anywhere else in North America. Under the latest policy, that share is 20 per cent for elk, 20 or 25 per cent for moose depending on the restricted region, 35 per cent for mountain goat, and 40 per cent for grizzly bears. Open season areas for moose and other animals remain in the southern Interior and northeast, where anyone can buy a license and tag to hunt. Abundant species such as mule deer, whitetail deer and black bear have no hunting quotas in any part of B.C. Zeman said for prized species such as Roosevelt elk on Vancouver Island, winning a resident tag in the lottery is rare enough to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As hunter numbers rebound, they increasingly face the choice to aim for another species, drive long distances to an unrestricted region, or hire a guide. The latest changes include returning Kootenay bighorn sheep to a general open season for guided hunting. The restriction that only full-curl rams can be hunted remains in place. Thomson said the population will be closely watched, and harvest limits returned if necessary. Zeman said the BCWF is concerned that this iconic Rocky Mountain trophy could once again be over-hunted. The popularity of hunting in B.C. continues to increase, from about 81,000 licences issued in 2003 to more than 100,000 last year, which means more res-
ident hunters are losers in regional hunting lotteries. BCWF compiled statistics for moose, the most popular big-game target. Moose populations have declined in some areas while both applications from resident hunters and the share reserved for guides has risen. In 2005 there were 56,000 applications for moose, with only one out of five successful. By 2013, there were nearly 67,000 would-

1. Christmas and Pets… An Explosive Mix! If you have ever watched the movie ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ you will appreciate that having pets - or any animal for that matter - in the house for the holiday celebrations can be challenging at times. And although we might be generally less accident prone than the Griswold family, there are some things we can do to make sure everyone in the family is safe and has a great time at Christmas. 2. Recipe for a Longer Life. The chemicals added to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to keep your tree living longer won't do the same for your pet. They are toxic to animals and you should never add chemicals if there is a chance of a pet taking a drink. Barricade the water reservoir for your tree stand to keep your pets from drinking the dirty water. 3. Not all that Glitters… Nothing shines like a fully decked out tree, but to keep everyone safe, tape down and secure any light or extension cords and frequently check for damage. Hang more fragile ornaments higher up and out of reach for curious kittens or wagging tails. Tinsel should not go on your tree. Ingested, tinsel can get wrapped up in your pets’ digestive tract, leading to great discomfort and even blockages that require surgery to be removed. 4. A Bad Rep for no Reason. The poinsettia is one of the plants that has a bad reputation. While the sap of poinsettias is considered to be mildly irritating and could cause some nausea or vomiting, it is by no means life-threatening, even if your pet consumed large quantities. 5. Pretty, but Poisonous. There are some holiday plants that are considered somewhat toxic to pets when ingested, including holly, mistletoe and the Christmas rose. The smaller the pet, the higher the risk. Monitor your plants and your pets closely. Are there any missing leaves or chewed branches? Is your family pet acting funny, vomiting or has it difficulty breathing? If you are at all in doubt, a call to the veterinarian is in order. 6. Not a Fan of Turkey. We might feel pleasantly full after a rich holiday meal, but for dogs and other pets, holiday treats are too rich and can result in a costly trip to the vet or worse. Poultry bones can easily splinter and fragments may cause intestinal blockages or injuries. 7. Not so Tasty Treats. Chocolates are a special treat during the holidays, but they are an absolute no-no for pets. They contain a chemical that can be deadly to pets. Keep pets on their regular diet over the holidays and look for special pet biscuits or chews for that extra treat. And make sure you keep treat plates and stockings stuffed with goodies out of your pets’ reach. 8. Shelter from the Storm. It is best to bring your pets inside during the colder months, but if your pet has to spend some time outside, make sure they can reach their usual sources of food and fresh water. When outside for an extended period of time, pets may require some extra calories to fend off the cold, so you might want to top off their bowls. And check their water supply twice a day to make sure it stays ice-free. 9. Your Social Life, not Mine! Holidays are a busy time for visiting. If you are away, have someone check in on your pets or board them. Remember that vaccinations will have to be up-to-date. If you are entertaining, keep an eye on your pets so they don’t share your guests, holiday treats or keep them in a quiet room away from the noise and bustle. 10. Happy Holidays for All. Don’t forget the wild animals this holiday season.Whole wheat is a great treat for many birds and other neighbourhood critters that visit your yard. You can also get special bird seed blends for all sorts of varieties of winged creatures that may be dining at your place.

BC’s population and economy are growing. Demand for electricity is forecast to grow by 40% over the next 20 years. BC Hydro will meet 78% of that incremental growth in demand through conservation measures, leaving a need for new generation of 1100 megawatts. We had choices on how best to acquire that 1,100 megawatts. Our decision was driven by choosing the lowest cost electricity so that rates can stay down. One of BC’s competitive advantages is our low cost electricity, 3rd lowest in North America! Site C is the third dam on the Peace River and because of the alreadyexisting huge Williston Reservoir, will generate 35% as much power as the WAC Bennett dam with only 5% of the environmental footprint. Low cost, clean, reliable electricity for the next 100 years. Climate talks end 2014 in disarray
B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure. This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert. These vast 1,500-yearold petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list. Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru. “Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in

falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough. This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag. The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lameduck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions. Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global human-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective. Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media. “Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to reannounce their modest

efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production. And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America. Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell. I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. Letter: On wildlife allocations for hunters We in the East Kootenay are privileged to have a tremendous resource in the variety of wildlife that we have for either viewing enjoyment or harvesting for our family’s winter supply of organic meat. Each year the provincial government sets the allocation rates to determine how many animals will be available for harvesting by resident hunters and guide outfitters. What many of us do not realize is that the B.C. Guide Outfitters Association is constantly lobbying the government for a greater share of the available allocations. These allocations would generally be for the benefit of foreign hunters as most of the clients of guide outfitters are from outside of Canada. It goes without saying that the
greater the guide outfitters, the fewer allocations are available for resident hunters. In most jurisdictions across North America, foreign hunters receive from 5 to 1- per cent of the harvestable surplus of wildlife. The current proposal of the B.C. Guide Outfitters Association would give foreign hunters up to 40 per cent of specific game species such as mountain sheep, goat and bear, and up to 25 per cent of moose and elk. This could result in 5,000 fewer hunting permits going to B.C. residents. It is of interest to note that over the last 10 years, the number of B.C. hunters has grown by 20 per cent while the number of foreign hunters coming to B.C. has declined by 30 per cent for the same period.
B.C. resident hunters spend over $230 million annually in local communities on hunting related activities and contribute $9 million a year towards conservation work through license fees. This does not reflect the contributions through conservations organizations and the more than 300,000 hours annually that outdoorsmen spend on habitat conservation projects across the province. Over the past two decades, non-resident hunting permits for moose in the Kootenay region have gone from 6 per cent in 1991 to 21 per cent in 2012, leaving hundreds of Kootenay residents without the opportunity to hunt moose. In the interest of comparison, Saskatchewan limits non-resident moose hunters to 4 per cent of the harvestable surplus and Alberta limits allocations between 2 to 7 per cent with a maximum of 10. In
Washington State the allocation limit for nonresidents is 5 per cent. It is not my intention to comment negatively on the B.C. Guide Outfitters as it is in their best interest to obtain as much of the allocation as possible. What I am attempting to do is bring this issue before the general population that may not be aware of some of these facts and figures or the importance of speaking up in support of increased allocations for resident hunters. If this is of concern to you I would ask that you express your concerns by contacting your MLA to encourage him to speak for you when this issue comes up for debate or discussion in the legislature or in committee. * Some of the above details obtained from the research of the B.C. Wildlife Federation. ~ D.F. Heidt, resident hunter

Hugs: To everyone who puts up Christmas lights, it’s so great to see all the decorations during the darkest time of year. Thank you for making dark, cold winter nights magical! Hugs: A huge hug to the kind gentleman at the hockey game on Friday who gave my grandson a ticket. Your kindness is so much appreciated. Hugs: Hugs and appreciation to all citizens of Cranbrook who have such beautiful lights to tour around and see. Light displays add memories to keep for all of us at any age. Slugs: To whoever decided to change the traffic flow coming down Panorama Hill! I have lived up here for 35 years and was completely satisfied with the 3 way stop. I would have thought that a survey with the residents up here on the hill would have been consulted with before any change was made. It is obvious that whoever was responsible for the change, has never lived up the hill and never driven down the hill on icy, snow covered roads in the winter. Dissatisfied resident Hugs: Big hugs to the ladies at Fabricland. They are always willing to stop and help a person no matter what your question might be. Thanks ladies!! Slugs: Big slugs to the litter bugs who really don’t seem to care about our town. Walking down the street, I can’t believe the mess. Can’t you just use a

These wonderful volunteers pick up many of the local shut-ins and bring them down to the Legion clubroom in the Heritage Inn, for an hour of singing along with Bud Abbott and his happy singers(Hugs to them too); socializing with friends & coffee, tea, sandwiches and sweets, courtesy of the Telus Ambassadors. A special hug to Santa for handing out surprise gifts (supplied by the Telus Community Ambassadors) to all the Seniors attending last Wednesday, and hugs to the Legion L.A. for the special Christmas baking. Thank you all, for your extra special efforts at this time of year. From Betty Nakahara, President, L.A. to Br. 24, R.C.L. Slugs: “Slimy” Slugs to the person or persons who dropped off 5 cats on Wycliffe Road to try to fend for themselves. Their fate does not look good. Survival amid the coyotes, traffic, local dogs, house broke cats do not last long and no doubt will meet a horrific demise. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Next time you acquire a kitten, it will grow up to be a cat, and unless you are being responsible and neutering, there will be more cats than you are willing to take care of. Dropping them off on others is not the answer!

Engaging the public on Columbia Basin The Columbia Basin Regional Advisory Committee provides a First Nation and community voice that will help inform hydroelectric operations planning in the Columbia Basin and potential future improvements to the Columbia River Treaty. “The people who live within the Columbia River Basin are best situated to shape its future. The Columbia Basin Regional Advisory Committee will give basin residents, communities and First Nations, government and power utilities another forum to share ideas as we continue to engage on hydroelectric operations on the river and negotiations on the Columbia River Treaty.” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Core Review. The committee builds on a longstanding tradition of community involvement in activities that affect the Columbia River Basin, and grew out of the extensive, twoyear public and First Nations consultation that informed British Columbia’s decision to continue the Columbia River Treaty and seek improvements within its existing framework. The basin residents that took part in the Columbia River Treaty Review public engagement activities expressed an interest in improved understanding and information sharing with respect to Columbia Basin hydroelectric operations, and continued engagement of First Nations and communities throughout any future Columbia River Treaty negotiations. The Columbia River Treaty Local G o v e r n m e n t s Committee, BC Hydro and the Ministry of Energy and Mines worked together to address these interests by establishing the Columbia Basin Regional Advisory Committee in the summer of 2014. The 37 members of the committee represent a broad range of interests, groups and geographical areas within the basin including municipalities and regional districts, First Nations, basin businesses, environmental, agricultural, recreational, and community organizations, and the Columbia Basin Trust,
BC Hydro, Columbia Power Corporation, FortisBC, the federal government and the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The committee will provide a forum for dialogue among participants and inform hydroelectric operations in the Columbia Basin and potential improvements to the Columbia River Treaty. A key role of committee members is also to engage members of their respective communities - seeking their input and disseminating information to improve collective understanding. The committee’s first meeting in September 2014 included a presentation on hydro operations in the basin, a discussion on how to raise awareness and understanding of hydro operations, and an update on the Columbia River Treaty Review. Feedback from participants was highly positive. A webinar on Dec. 15, 2014 covered a presentation and lively discussion of the range of impacts and benefits of the Columbia River Treaty on Basin communities, the region and province. With such a promising start, the Columbia Basin Regional Advisory Committee can expect to be highly engaged in 2015.

Additional $2 million for Buy Local program The B.C. government is expanding the Buy Local program with an additional $2 million to help B.C. farmers and food processors promote their products, and support food security in B.C., Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick announced today. “The Buy Local Program will continue to be a huge success
in encouraging British Columbians to choose the high-quality foods grown and produced right here at home. Every purchase of a B.C. product contributes to jobs in our communities, and the food security of our province,” said Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick. With the additional $2 million investment, the
program aims to increase consumer demand and sales of B.C. agrifoods. Businesses and organizations can apply for matching funding from the B.C. government for projects that promote local foods. Projects can include in-store promotions, social media or web campaigns, traditional advertising, or other ideas.
“Buying local food creates jobs, builds our local communities, and is good for the environment. If this investment results in new sales relationships across the value chain and more purchases of locally grown, caught, and processed foods, the benefits will be far reaching. It’s been a busy time for the team at Taylor Adams Chartered Accountants office; not just because of the day to day work they are committed to but their charitable work as well. By now we hope everyone, not just in Cranbrook, but across Canada has heard that Taylor Adams was the number one fundraising team for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada’s Dress for the Cause. In addition, Mike Adams was the individual highest fundraiser in the country. As part of that dedication and effort the Breast Cancer Society of Canada has made a gift on behalf of Taylor Adams and has lit one large star with EKFH’s Starlite Campaign. The $5,000 gift is dedicated to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s oncology department with funds stewarded by EKFH.
“There has been a lot of attention surrounding the team at Taylor Adams but perhaps the most beautiful part of their story is the compassion and humility each of the team has in respect to why they dedicated so much of their own time to such a great cause for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada and now EKFH,” shares Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. A big and bright blue star now shines atop the regional hospital in honour of Taylor Adams; Top in Canada and now a Star at Home. EKFH’s Starlite Campaign captures a thank you, a memory, a wish to make a difference or just simply because. ment to grow agriculture and looks forward to working collaboratively in the weeks and months ahead to realise this commitment.” said British Columbia Agriculture Council chair Stan Vander Waal. The Buy Local program has supported about 40 campaigns to support B.C. food, seafood, and floral products in communities around the province so far, with companies and organizations, large and small reporting increased sales, including: * B.C. Food Processors Association reporting sales of B.C. products increased by $5 million during the first four months of their project. * 17,000 additional cartons of cherries were sold over three weeks in 2013 compared to the same period in 2012 despite a smaller crop. * The entire crop of the new Salish(TM) and Aurora Golden Gala(TM) apples sold, with successful introduction in four of B.C.’s largest food retail chains. * Coastal Black Estate Winery reported sales increased 12%, and expanded sales in liquor stores and restaurants. Applications and more information about the program are available at www.iafbc.ca/buylocal. htm.

The Starlite Campaign EKFH’s annual Starlite Campaign underway EKFH’s 7th Annual Starlite Campaign has begun and the tradition of lighting stars atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital is underway. The first three stars: Judy’s Star (Eagles Nest RV Resort), BMO Bank of Montreal and an accumulation of community donations has started the campaign with donations of $17,452.29. An extralarge star at the peak of the hospital has also been set ablaze signifying the start of the 2014 campaign. Funds raised through this year’s campaign will help community hospitals and health care facilities. EKFH is inviting donors to also consider investing their Starlite gift to provide critical support to intensive care at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. EKFH Chair Brian Clifford, “This is a very important time of the year for EKFH; holiday giving is a significant component of the funding the foundation is able to provide for many areas of health care in the East Kootenay. This year the Starlite Campaign takes on a special purpose with our efforts focused on raising critical funds for medical equipment for the new 6-bed ICU currently under construction at the regional hospital.” The 2014 Starlite
Campaign goal is to raise $150,000 and to light 17 large stars and 24 smaller stars. By supporting the Starlite Campaign donors can help strengthen health care in their own community and/ or services provided at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The ICU Capital Campaign is a 17-month fundraising effort to raise $1,000,000; a more concentrated effort on the ICU campaign will begin in the early New Year. Since 2005 EKFH, with the generosity and help of donors like you, has provided $4,290,228 in funding to East Kootenay hospitals, facilities and programs. In the last four years, 95% of the donors’ donation has been dedicated back to the purchase of equipment and/or patient comforts. When you see the stars shining brightly please remember that through your generous support you can help light a path for others. Every dollar and every star counts. Welcome to the driver’s seat
Peaking through the long lens of Driving Television
By Keith Morgan
Driving Television is a slickly produced, fast-paced car show, designed to help regular folks make a sound decision when making the second biggest purchase of their lives – buying a car. When Driveway’s lead test driver Zack Spencer is not writing for you here, he’s in front of the camera co-hosting the top-rated, independently produced, Canadian show with Lacey Elliott. You won’t find me in front of the lens, having looks suited only for print, but recently I spent a day behind the DTV camera, observing Zack and videographer Brian Chow. The action took place in Whistler for the launch of the 2015 Lexus NX. First up was a presentation about the product, and specifically the technology featured in the compact crossover vehicle. While some journos
present yawned occasionally and jotted a few notes, Zack wrote feverishly, asking many questions. “They sometimes last an hour or longer but these presentations are extremely important to my day’s work,” advises Zack. “The print guys can take the thumb drive with all the info on it and check it at their leisure later. But I need to leave the room with all the facts and have my questions ready to go.” Minutes later, he’s conducting an interview with Lexus Canada Director Cyril Dimitris, about the importance of this new entry to the fastest growing market segment. The print and online writers have already left for a day on the scenic back roads and a jaunt along the Sea to Sky Highway. We’re striking out on our own. “We do up to 30 launches a year and some manufacturers want people to drive up to 400 kilometres. I always say we are either driving or shooting but we’re not doing both so most manufacturers are happy to let us do our own thing.” Just 15 minutes later, Zack is up Whistler Mountain, doing a standup shot talking

knowledgeably to the camera about the NX. Yes, he really was taking notes while many of the rest of us were nodding or slurping the coffee at the Four Seasons Resort. A steep mountain road outside Pemberton was the perfect spot to show off the car in a beautiful location. Well, it was in the breaks between heavy logging trucks passing by. The next couple of hours were spent driving up and down the road to capture in car commentary from Zack. “When we first started (12 years ago) we had to shoot with large TV cameras from the roadside for externals or stuff a camera into the dash to get my remarks while driving,” explains Zack. But new technology has changed all that. Brian shoots with what looks like a regular digital still camera. “The old TV cameras would cost about $100,000 but you can now get great DSLR cameras, designed for video, for around $10,000.” Then there are the tiny $500+ GoPro video cameras that attach anywhere inside or outside, which Brian controls from an app on his iPhone
from the passenger seat! Gone are the days of $1,000 an hour helicopter shoots when a $150 remote controlled drone can achieve the same dramatic aerial video. Now it’s back to Vancouver to edit a three- to sevenminute segment for the show. Zack explains the program’s mandate: “Like the Driveway section in print, we are not producing a show for gearheads but for normal people, who just want to know what’s available, for how much, what the safety features are and how fuel efficient a car is.” The show featuring the NX goes to air this Saturday on Global TV across Canada. Check your local listings for times. keith.morgan@drivewaybc. ca What Zack says about the 2015 Lexus NX Where has the modern station wagon gone? – Nowhere, it’s just called something else—a crossover or small SUV. The edgy design of the NX will turns heads and garner attention but I have come to realize two things about the car business. When a design is

rather edgy, it can date quickly. The second is that the initial “bam, look at me” wears off. The exterior might be an acquired taste but the inside is a refined and practical place to spend time.
Powering around the mountain resort I got my first shot at the all-new 2.0L direct inject turbocharged 4-cylinder that Lexus will use in a number of its vehicles. With 235hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque this new power plant does a good job once the NX 200t is in motion, it is getting away from a stop that could use a bit more snap. AWD is standard across the lineup but the system is designed to run in front wheel drive as much

I believe that this new product has an ever larger possible market than just baby boomers.

When the original Nissan Murano was introduced in 2002, it was one of a number of car-based crossover vehicles that helped build the mid-size family SUV category. What that original model had was a unique take on design that made it stand out from the crowd. Here we are in 2015 and Nissan wants to recapture some of that original sizzle with this third generation Murano. With a bold, eye-popping design that looks like nothing on the road, this latest model has a sharper price, an upscale interior and refined ride that Nissan believes will appeal to the baby boomers this vehicle is targeted at. After spending a very full day driving around California’s Napa valley, I believe that this new product has an even larger possible market than just baby boomers. Looks Since the 2015 Nissan Murano is just about to hit dealership floors, the Napa region was the first in North America to get to see it. By the reaction from other drivers on the road, this mid-sized people mover gets a lot of attention. The bold front design now incorporates the headlamp treatment that will start to migrate across its other vehicles, like the new Maxima coming soon. The wedge shaped look is referred to as a boomerang and it is mimicked in the rear lights as well. Both the front and rear have LED accents and the main headlamps are LED on the top trim levels. The other design highlight is the roof, that looks like it is floating thanks to a blacked out rear windows and roof pillars. This design also features curvaceous rear hips, making the design modern and stylish. Now sold as front wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and priced from $29,998, the Murano is an option for many potential buyers. It is too bad

stricter fuel ratings for 2015. The tuning of the Murano is very relaxed, almost luxurylike. The steering is very easy to operate; some might find it too light. The pace at which the CVT works is very subdued, meaning the car wants to be in the low RPM range to help extract the best economy but when pushed it can take a while to wake the car up. To get around this there are now set shift points in the CVT that can be accessed through the transmission’s manual mode. It would be better to have a sport setting for the CVT but it isn’t offered. Verdict Overall the packaging of the 2015 Murano is very good. The interior has plenty of room for the front and rear passengers and the seats are comfortable. The cargo area
is very big and the square shape of the hatch makes loading easier. This product should be attractive to buyers of compact SUVs that want more room and V6 power for just slightly more. Shoppers of premium brands who want a refined ride and interior for less money should consider the higher trim levels. This new Murano will certainly get attention for its exterior styling, but dig deeper there is more to this product than just an attractive look, there is value and comfort that is available to a wide range of potential buyers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

The 2015 Canadian Car of the Year competition moved in to its final phase with the announcement of the final fifteen “Best New” category winners by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, better known as AJAC. These category winners were chosen by 73 Canadian automotive journalists following a recently completed hands-on, five-day, back-to-back evaluation drive event, known as

2 “TestFest”, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The testing is both detailed and a challenging process that generated 1,640 evaluation drives, approximately 106,405 data points and 500 category ballots. “TestFest is the most intensive new vehicle evaluation process on the planet,” said CCOTY Co-Chair, Gary Grant. “No other organization employs such stringent testing methods to determine their car of year award winners. Import brands dominate Canadian Car of the Year Awards treal Auto Show) and Canadian Green Car of the Year (March 24 / Vancouver Auto Show). Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Subaru were all double winners and, as usual, there were a few surprises. You can look at the voting and scoring details plus all the collected data on performance (acceleration, braking, fuel economy, etc.) on the AJAC web site (ajac.ca). You can also look back on previous winners going all the way back to 1985, when the Volkswagen Golf (an omen perhaps?) was a winner. A few weeks ago, I made some winner predictions for the seven categories that I managed to drive all entries, while at Testfest. Three proved to be right on the mark, two were runner-ups, but sadly, my Toyota Camry Hybrid and Chevrolet Tahoe choices were completely off target. The Acura RLX Hybrid was my most disappointing non-winner, as I

also considered it a good candidate for overall Canadian Car of the Year. The RLX is an amazing sophisticated automobile that could yet win a new technology award. There were just two entries in all-electric City Car category and the Kia Soul EV was a clear winner. I’ve heard both small car victors Honda Fit and VW Golf talked about as the poten-

Margareta Mahlstedt accepting the Canadian Car of the Year award for Sports Performance, over $50k, for the 2015 V60 Polestar tial overall winner. The double wins for Subaru and Hyundai were a bit of a surprise (to some) but it was certainly nice to see Porsche recognised for two outstanding products. While I didn’t expect the Volvo V60 Polestar to eclipse Ford Mustang GT, it was certainly good to see Volvo, a company with a great history that was teetered on the brink of extinction, back in the winner’s circle. All voting for Canadian Car of the Year is done by secret ballot and the esteemed accounting firm KPMG tabulated the results. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
