Wednesday night, festively decorated in support of a good cause. Five homeowners opened their doors for the Festival of Homes tour, put on by Krest Homes and the Kevin Lapp Real Estate Team.

About 200 tickets were sold, and visitors donated money on site, with all proceeds totaling about $3,000 — money used to purchase Christmas gifts for families in need. “We had a great turn out and people were very generous and gave a lot of positive feedback,” said

Kevin Lapp Real Estate Team office manager Sheri Colford. “They were pleased with our homeowners, who were willing to open their homes to strangers and invite them in to celebrate the season, as well as with the variety of homes that we had.”

Each year, organizers scour Sylvan Lake schools for needy families, and aim to help them at Christmas time by purchasing gifts. Occasionally, families that benefit from the program are overlooked by other programs. This year the staff will purchase, wrap and deliver gifts for five Sylvan Lake families. “It’s really difficult for these kids to go back to school — some kids get so much and some kids get very, very little, so it’s nice to know that for one day these kids are getting what they want, which takes the pressure off of parents,” said Colford. The festival this year experienced its highestever turnout in its three years of existence. Colford was told that people were having so much fun exploring the festively decorated houses that they didn’t want the night to end. “Everybody was so pleased with it,” she said. “It’s a really fun night and it’s really hard to catch people in a bad mood.” Since its inception, the festival has raised over $7,500. Colford said organizers are always looking for ways to give back to the community, and felt people would very much enjoy a night of taking in some of Sylvan Lake’s festively decorated homes. They also felt the event would provide a fun way of raising money for a good cause. Continued on Page 3

Marti Leigh was one participating homeowner whose Marina Bay home was opened to the public for the event. This year marked her first being involved with it, and she was happy to welcome the community inside. “I was asked to do it and I was happy to do it,” she said.

It is truly wonderful to experience those moments at any time, and at Christmas, it is especially meaningful. But unfortunately, life, with its trail of sadness and broken hearts, does not follow a calendar. And, tragedy without warning, can rear its ugly head just as easily at Christmas time as it can at any other time during the year. But still, even as people wrestle with their own sadness and their own demons, the sun continues to rise and set and the days end and the days begin. And people decorate Christmas trees and buy presents and go through the motions of finding joy, even if it seems like an illusive rainbow’s end, and chasing it seems futile and hopeless. But still, life goes on. Those who have lost a loved one during this season, those who cannot lift themselves out of the deep, dark hole of depression, and those who are missing loved ones who are far away no doubt find Christmas a bleak and dismal time.

I like to think of these moments as ‘quiet miracles.’ In my lifetime, I’ve had a few quiet miracles that showed up around Christmas. I don’t even question why. I just count myself lucky. Just for the record, when my higher self isn’t activated, I can’t even see these quiet miracles because I’m too busy running around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off trying to beat deadlines, both real and self imposed. However, when I manage to ‘chill out,’ using such means as hot yoga or chilled rum and eggnog, I can usually manage re-focus.

And I’m here to tell you, if it works for me, I’m sure it will work for you, too. Therefore, I urge each and everyone of you out there to remind yourself once in a while that there are quiet miracles out there, free for the taking, if only you take the time to look. And so, this year, my wish for you all is that, somewhere in the cacophony of the season, each of you may find your own quiet miracles, whatever they happen to be in your world. And in so doing, may you have the best Christmas ever. Merry Christmas, everyone!

The Victory Loan sales organization which has done a great job throughout nine successive loans, celebrated the wind-up of its affairs at a banquet and social evening held in Sylvan Lake hotel on Thursday, Dec. 13. W. A. Biss, unit organizer, acting as M.C., briefly

reviewed the fine showing made by the Sylvan Lake Unit, pointing out that from a modest quota of $25,000 in the first loan, to $100,000 in the eighth, the unit had topped its quota in every loan, raising a total of approximately $625,000. There were 66 people at the function. ♦ ♦ ♦ Pte. Bruce Castleman returned home this week from overseas. ♦ ♦ ♦ The regular meeting of village council was visited by a delegation of A. Bigam, G. Bigam and S. Cairns regarding a draying licence. Council agreed on a $10 licence, which had been the rate previously. A special meeting will be held Nov. 29 dealing with the property used for

a golf course and being purchased by W. A. Biss. Mr. Biss wished to complete payment of golf course instead of yearly payments for a number of years. This was agreeable to council.

At Monday’s meeting of Sylvan Lake town council suggestions for a centennial project were put forth and a committee was set up to decide on a project and carry work forward towards its completion by 1967. A skating arena was mooted as one suggestion, and the establishment of a park to be known as Centennial Park was also suggested. A letter was received from the County of Red Deer enquiring about plans and suggesting pooling the

town’s grant with that of the county a project of more benefit to more people could be undertaken. Committee set up to further study the matter was made up of Councillors Paul Dolling, Fred Moore and Mayor W. Dunford. ♦ ♦ ♦ New officers for 1965 elected at the regular meeting of Royal Canadian Legion are as follows: President - R. Ferguson; Vice President - C. Turner; Secretary - P. For the purpose of calculating the sewer service charge payable by a customer, the volume of sewage contributed by the customer to the sewer system shall be deemed to be equal to 80% of the water delivered to the customer’s premises, whether the water was received from the Town or from sources other than the Town.

Staff of the Sylvan Lake Tim Hortons on Wednesday were happy to present the proceeds from their recent Smile Cookie Campaign to the Ambulatory Care Centre for Sylvan Lake and Area. A cheque for $5,000 was presented to members of the Ambulatory Care Centre’s Community Advisory Committee (formerly the Urgent Care Committee). Committee chair Susan Samson said a business plan for the care centre was submitted to the Province in November. Word on the status of the submission is expected by late January. victims of family violence in 2010. Females accounted for 81 per cent of police-reported incidents. In 2010, women were more vulnerable than men to intimate partner violence, with a rate of intimate partner violence nearly four times higher than that for men (574 per 100,000 versus 147 per 100,000). This elevated risk for women was the case for both spousal and dating partner relationships.

Alberta had the fourth highest rate in Canada with 13,010 victims of family violence. Six in 10 children and youth victims were assaulted by a parent. Aboriginal women were three times more likely than non-Aboriginal women to report being a victim of spousal violence.

Christmas outreach programs well supported in Eckville

Churches of Sylvan Lake Ministerial Association Christmas Eve Services December 24th

Members of the Eckville community in November donated plenty of food and gift items to help support families for that town’s Santas Anonymous program, and to be sent abroad to help other children around the world for Operation Christmas Child. Laurie Carritt, owner of Eckville Super Service, has collected Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes as a Greyhound agent for the past 25 years. He said the program received solid community involvement this year from people eager to help out. “People realize Christmas is for everyone,” he said. In previous years, the program in Eckville received an average of 40 shoeboxes for the entire year. This year, it received an average of three to five a day. Students at Eckville Elementary School also played their part in helping others in need by donating toys and non-perishable food items to Santas Anonymous. Principal Ian McLaren said most students have donated to Santas Anonymous before and are happy to help in any way they can. “The kids are excited when they bring something in. They are happy to give,” he said. Popcorn machines were also set up around the school, with proceeds from popcorn sales also going toward the cause. About $340 was raised through that initiative. Eckville FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) director Heather Allen said a total of 20 hampers were put together for families in this year’s Santas Anonymous program. Hampers include items such as turkey, ham, soft drinks, chips, candy canes, chocolate, bacon, eggs, coffee, pancake mix and toys for children. Other items, such as bath products, were also included in some hampers. “Families are surprised with all they get in the hampers,” Allen said. While Santas Anonymous is a program specific to Christmas, donations for the Food Bank are accepted year-round, said Allen.

Students of École Mother Teresa School learned business basics by participating in a number of handson activities last Tuesday, all to help prepare them for the working world. Junior Achievement Southern

Alberta regional programs have been in place for 50 years, with various programs running throughout the school year. The programs target students in Grades 5 through 12, and build upon one another with the aim of making students financially responsible. and through hands-on activities aims to teach them various business skills such as creating and organizing a business plan, business management, resume writing and interviewing skills. Gregg Broks is a volunteer business teacher for the program and teaches business principles to students by using examples of businesses such as hot dog vendors. He said it’s important that students learn how to market their own businesses with tools such as social media, word-of-mouth communication and print. “The students learn how easy it is to make money with having your own business,” he said. “It motivates them to explore new options.” Broks said he enjoys helping children understand how business impacts community, and said they can begin working at an age as young as 12 years old. He’s frequently impressed by how quickly they grasp the concepts of business and entrepreneurship. “They love the idea, and it opens up a whole world of opportunities to start a business,” he said. A particular favourite activity among many students centres around pen assembly production, according to program co-ordinator Marie Litwinski. In the activity, students experience the difference between assembling pens through unit production as opposed to in an assembly line.

“They love the challenge of putting together the pens,” said Litwinski. “They like the race and competition. It seems to be the highlight from the program.” Litwinski said the program’s main purpose is to give students a basic knowledge of what’s required in the workforce, and to inform them at an early age of future business opportunities. “It’s a good overview to the business world — getting out there, entrepreneurship and how to get out in the workforce,” she said. Starting at a young age, she feels, will reap many benefits for them in the long run. “It may not all stick and it may not make the most sense right now, but at least it gets them thinking of those basic skills and building on for the future,” she said. “I think introducing it now is a great idea — it’s getting them prepared for when they do get out into real life, and it’s work-readiness skills.” Litwinski said the program’s content directly corresponds with students’ intellectual levels and abilities, and is supported by examples of early entrepreneurship such as babysitting and lawn mowing. Through such endeavours, young workers are faced with the choice of either spending or saving their money earned, and Litwinski wants students to understand the nature of making such decisions, and the implications that may result from them. “It’s about getting those ideas instilled in them now if they do make a bit of money,” she said, adding the program also benefits students in many other ways. “It’s a good supplement to their math courses, and in high school, it’s a 1-800-222-TIPS good supplement to (1-800-222-8477) their career and life We want your INFO... ...NOT your name management courses.”
