A Langley man arrested for an arson attack on his estranged wife and her two children has pleaded guilty to four criminal counts.

Andre Harvey Richard, who has been in custody since the April fire, made a brief appearance before a Surrey Provincial Court judge on Monday morning (Dec. 22).

Richard entered guilty pleas to arson, breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offence and two courts of aggravated assault.

Charges of attempted murder will be stayed by the Crown prosecutor.

Richard was arrested in Fernie the day after his wife and her two children managed to escape their burning house on Wakefield Drive in the Willoughby area of Langley Township.

Police said the three were asleep

when Richard set fire to their house around 1 a.m. on April 2, then entered the wife’s bedroom and assaulted her.

When the woman’s 14-year-old daughter tried to intervene, police said she was also assaulted.

The wife and daughter managed to escape the burning home with the couple’s eight-year-old son and fled to a neighbour’s house where they call 911.

The house was completely destroyed in the blaze.

A warrant was issued for Richard’s arrest.

The next day, RCMP received a call of an erratic, and possibly impaired, driver near Fernie, 30 minutes from the Alberta border.

A witness followed the suspect until the vehicle — a grey Saturn SUV — came to a stop.

The driver exited the vehicle and ran into bushes at the side of the road, said police.

A crisis negotiator convinced Richard to surrender without further incident.

At the Monday court appearance, the stocky, bearded Richard stood with a written copy of the charges in his hand as the judge read them out.

Four times, he was asked how he pleaded, and four times he said, “guilty, your honour” in a clear, low voice.

A small group of people attended the hearing.

One woman could be seen tightly gripping the hand of a friend as the guilty pleas were entered.

Richard is tentatively scheduled to return to court for a one-day sentencing hearing on March 5.

Between now and then, he will undergo a psychiatric assessment as part of a pre-sentencing report.

Langley RCMP closed 200 Street for several hours on Monday afternoon, after four vehicles were involved in a crash near 45A Avenue.

Two people were injured, with one taken to hospital via helicopter.

Langley RCMP are looking for witnesses to a noon-hour crash in the Brookswood area on Monday, which sent two people to hospital.

Four vehicles were involved in a pile-up near 45A Avenue and 200 Street around 12 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 22).

Initial reports suggested there was a head-on crash, which led to at least one other vehicle being sideswiped.

One person was transported to hospital by ground ambulance with relatively minor injuries, while a second person with more serious but non-life-threatening injuries was transported from the scene by air ambulance.

Police closed a section of 200 Street near 45A Avenue to traffic for about two hours, so that the injured could be taken away for treatment, the vehicles towed away and the investigation at the scene could take place.

Anyone who saw the crash is asked to contact the Langley RCMP detachment at 604532-3200.

While it has not received the negative attention the Langley City bus loop has in the past few years, the new Carvolth exchange and park and ride lot is under the microscope of both Langley RCMP and TransLink Police.

Several recent incidents have drawn plenty of police attention. One series of events involved the thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles parked in the lot, and the second was an assault in the early evening hours of Nov. 7. Arrests have been made in both cases.

At a meeting on safety issues on Dec. 10, TransLink Police assistant chief Ed Eviston said his agency “was on the cusp of engaging in a joint forces operation related to property crimes at Carvolth,” when Langley RCMP swooped in on Nov. 5 and

made an arrest.

Langley RCMP Supt. Murray Power said police highlighted the thefts in a morning meeting, and were able to make an arrest that afternoon. A 48-year-old Surrey man, was in the midst of taking a catalytic converter off an exhaust system when he was arrested.

In the assault incident, Langley RCMP arrested two people who had been hanging around the bus exchange.

In this case, they asked the victim for money and then stabbed him when he didn’t give them what they considered a “sufficient sum.”

Charged are Amanda Visona, 29, and 26-year-old Justin White.

There are several abandoned houses near the transit exchange. The two suspects had been tracked to one of those properties, but weren’t found at that time.

Keian’s Holiday Wish Toy Drive has officially come to an end, with 1,511 toys delivered to sick children at BC Children’s Hospital and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

“This is what Keian was about; bringing joy to others,” said Keian’s mom Chantal Blundell.

“He wanted to ensure that children like him could experience the love that surrounds Christmas. It’s because of his love that we will continue to keep his legacy shining just as bright.”

Chantal and Ryan Blundell lost their beautiful six-year-old son Keian on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2014, after a very hard fight against an aggressive leukemia.

But even in those last days of his young life, Keian was thinking of other sick kids just like him, wanting to bring love and joy into their lives.

While he was in hospital, Keian told his parents he wanted to bring toys to children living at BC Children’s Hospital and Canucks Place Children’s Hospice.

By last Christmas, family and friends got word of what he was doing, and Keian got to deliver 300 toys to sick children two weeks before he passed away.

This year, his parents wanted to honour their son and keep his legacy of care and love alive

by continuing his toy drive.

“Keian’s Holiday Wish Toy Drive” went from November until Dec. 15.

There were drop off locations all over Metro Vancouver, including in Langley at Keian’s preschool at West Langley Elementary.

Christmas was Keian’s favourite time of year and the donation of the toys on Wednesday, Dec. 17 was a clear example of what one little boy’s spirit can accomplish, said his parents.

It was the year of the backlash in the Langleys, with controversies over everything from a heritage style business block in Fort Langley, to an attempt to increase housing density in Brookswood, and a plan to establish Canada’s first Christian school of law.

Work on the Coulter Berry building resumed, following a drawn-out battle that saw some residents sue to block the heritage-style three-storey building, arguing the structure exceeded the size limit guidelines for downtown Fort Langley.

They won a court ruling that suspended construction, but it turned out to be a temporary victory.

The judge who issued that ruling said the project should have been approved through a different process of rezoning, which resulted in an application to do just that by developer Eric Woodward.

After a public hearing that lasted three days, council voted to approve the necessary rezoning and a modified, slightly smaller version of the building.

••• In Brookswood, the battle was over a proposed plan to increase the population of the Brookswood area by allowing multiple-family dwellings and smaller lots.

It was voted down after a marathon multi-evening public hearing that was dominated by opponents.

••• A planned law school at Trinity Western University fell victim to a cross-Canada controversy.

At issue was the TWU community covenant that requires students and staff to promise they won’t get involved in any relationship other than a married, heterosexual one.

Critics say the covenant is anti-gay and conflicts with a lawyer’s duty to represent anyone regardless of their beliefs.

TWU says the issue is one of religious freedom.

The school was approved by the Law Society of British Columbia, which regulates the more than 11,000 practising lawyers in the province, and the provincial government.

But under pressure from a majority of lawyers in B.C. both the society and the province have rescinded their approvals.

TWU has announced it is taking the society to court.

It is also suing a number of other law societies that have declared they will not recognize a law degree from TWU. ••• Among the many crime stories that generated the most attention in 2014, the tragic death of several dogs was at first reported as a Langley case, but that turned out to be untrue.

Dog walker Emma Paulsen claimed someone had stolen her truck with six dogs inside it while it was parked at the Brookswood off-leash dog park in Langley.

The case became known as the “Brookswood Six.” But in fact, as Paulsen eventually admitted, the dogs died from heat while left in her vehicle, which was reportedly parked in Richmond.

••• As the year drew to a close, the case of Chris Lafrenier generated a near-overwhelming response from local residents after The Times reported how

the Langley man was savagely beaten and robbed of his rent money after getting off a bus at the Langley City bus loop on Logan Avenue.

A campaign on social media raised thousands of dollars and generated offers of help ranging from a home-cooked Christmas dinner to dental work to repair a chipped tooth suffered in the attack.

Chris Lafrenier is starting to recover from a vicious beating that left him with a brain injury on Nov. 29, 2014. Two teens, 15 and 19, were arrested. The community raised more than $12,000 to help Chris.

A 15-year-old also arrested for the attack was charged with the same counts, but he can’t be named because of his age.

••• A May assault aboard a Langley transit bus was recorded on video by a passenger, and the footage generated hundreds of thousands of views on the YouTube website.

The video shows a mother with three children physically going after a woman who threw a drink at one of the kids.

Langley RCMP said the confrontation occurred when Leah Susan MacKay, 43, of Surrey got into an argument with the bus driver over nonpayment of her fare and the mother objected to MacKay’s swearing.

The police report said MacKay then threatened to kill the mother and her children before throwing a drink at the youngest child, a boy who was less than one year old.

The two women got into a fight, captured on video.

Police said after the two women got off the bus, MacKay produced a knife, knocked over the complainant’s four-year-old daughter and kicked her other two-year-old daughter in the back.

The attacker was arrested about 20 minutes later.

In August, MacKay pleaded guilty to guilty to one count of assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering threats.

She was sentenced to time served, ordered to pay a $100 victim surcharge and given two years of probation.

••• Work began on a new recreation centre in Langley City in 2014.

The new Timms Community Centre facility will include a weight room, gymnasium and indoor walking/running track, as well as change rooms, a games room, multipurpose rooms, a community kitchen, coffee shop and a secure enclosed patio on the building’s west side.

Work on the 35,000 square foot facility next to the existing city hall is now underway.

In December, a report to council said while construction on the recreation centre is still on budget, it has fallen about three months behind schedule and will likely be completed in March, 2016.

Construction crews uncovered an artesian well that needed to be capped as well as a number of rail ties from the former interurban railway, which they had to remove.

The biggest delays were caused by the need to relocate BC Hydro and Telus lines, which previously ran through the property where the centre’s underground parking garage will be located.

Currently, the centre, budgeted at $14.3 million, is on track to cost around $13.97 million, with a $330,000 contingency.

Justin Trudeau has come up with a campaign idea that may help him seal the deal with enough voters to win power in next October’s federal election.

He has taken direct aim at the prime minister’s secrecy, the muzzling of cabinet ministers, MPs and bureaucrats and what he calls “message control.”

Many people who otherwise have few issues with the Conservative government are not happy with the manufactured flow of information. Other than government ads which feature “the Harper government,” actual information from MPs and civil servants is often sparse. While some MPs like Langley’s Mark Warawa are quite open and accessible with citizens and local media, many more are not.

Many cabinet ministers rarely hold press conferences.

Harper himself is almost permanently unavailable to the media. He makes a few appearances, such as a recent year-end interview on CBC, but he never answers questions in an impromptu fashion.

When he appeared at a fundraiser in Langley in the summer, he did not say one word to any media person, national, regional or local. Supporters who wished to talk to him had to stand in a lengthy lineup.

Prime ministers don’t have to be your friends. But they do have to be accountable, and that includes saying something that isn’t scripted, at least once in a while.

Like Bard the bowman in The Hobbit, Trudeau has taken aim at this weak spot in the dragon’s scales, and it may score enough votes for him to at least win a minority government.

Christmas means something different for just about everyone, but there is some common frustrations and joys about this holiday that we all share.

Following is chronological list of what Christmas is for many of us.

Nov. 1: Christmas is — not even on my radar.

Nov. 30: Christmas is — a nagging feeling that I should be doing something on my weekend...shopping perhaps?

Dec. 5: Christmas is — jealousy at finding out that your best friend and family will be spending the holiday in Cabo. That nagging feeling from the end of November intensifies, but you go out to a movie instead.

Dec. 12: Christmas is — finding out that the Christmas lights that you left hanging on your house from years past no longer work. This prompts a mad dash to the store and numerous cuts and abrasions as you try to hang them using the same rusty nails and rickety ladder you promised you would replace two years ago.

Dec. 19: Christmas is — another mad rush to the mall to find last-minute gifts for friends, family and the people you work with. Absolutely nothing appeals to you as a gift for the special people in your life, but you are able to find the most perfect present possible for that annoying but friendly delivery guy you see twice a year. You run into your friends at the mall, who inform you they are just there to see a movie. They did their Christmas shopping on Nov. 1.

In talking with your family, you stay away from the subject of presents. You know that your sister will positively not need or want the cheap bunny slippers you ended up getting her and that golf book you got for your Dad just proves that you are a bad, thoughtless son.

Dec. 24: Christmas is — driving home late at night during a snowstorm because you finally thought of a gift for your spouse that is only available out of town. You got the last one and allowed yourself a moment of private celebration.

You felt a warm bond with the store’s proprietor that ends as you pray that the red lights of the car in front of you stay where they are to guide you through the driving snow.

Dec. 25: Christmas is — easy laughter with your friends and family. Dad sits in a chair by the fire, nearly overcome with the warmth of family and the nostalgia of past Christmas mornings.

Then, amidst the good-hearted chaos, you lock eyes with your wife from across the living room. She smiles and mouths ‘I love you.’ Your heart melts and Christmas is wonderful.

Council is being had Editor: For the second straight year, Langley Township council has bent over backwards to allow street parking along 80 Avenue, between 209 and 212 Streets These individuals who complain to the council say the parking is required for their beloved guests. “Where will our guests park during the holiday season?” they whine.

Really? Your guests? How about telling the truth — this is so you can park your own car on the street because either your garage is full, or not being occupied, or you have way too many people living in your house. Do they have junk in their garages? Do they have illegal suites?

Did these people not look around before they bought their houses to know there would be no street parking, and 80 Avenue would be expanded to four lanes and used as a feeder route to Highway 1 via 216 Street? It’s all laid out in the Willoughby Plan on the Township website.

Why are these people crying now? If you look at any time of the day during this holiday parking period along 80 Avenue, you will see the same cars parked there. Take that to the bank.

Look at 209 street. You think this is guests parking on the street? Nope. It’s the residents of the townhouse complexes along 209 Street. These people have garages and driveways yet they park on the street.

If you have a problem parking your own car, maybe you should have bought a bigger home or better yet, taken a look at the Township plan.

My property taxes go towards funding the expansion of 80 Avenue to four lanes. I didn’t sign up for my money being used to expand the street and have it used for street parking.

The council is setting a very bad precedent here. If I don’t like something that is really stupid to begin with, I should go cry to the council and they will go in my favour? Ridiculous.

These people who lobbied to implement parking should really give their heads a shake. You aren’t concerned about your “guests.” You are concerned about where you should park because you bought a small house or aren’t utilizing your garage properly, or you have illegal tenants.

Wake up council. You are being had.

Don’t fall for the images in pipeline commercials Editor: Re: Pipeline Support, (The Times, Dec. 18.)

Well. This is what happens when people believe the mushy ads on TV, put there by the oil companies.

The oil and pipeline companies are spending millions to try to convince the people of British Columbia they can install a pipeline through the most beautiful part of the province without scarring the land for life.

Even with care, this is impossible.

These new pipelines will not carry crude oil. They will carry a mixture of thick tar sands oil and a chemical solvent to thin it down so it can be pumped. This concoction is called Dilbit (diluted bitumen). As we have seen in recent U.S. spills, Dilbit is impossible to completely clean up. Unlike oil, it sinks to the bottom of creeks, rivers and oceans, where it is out of reach for clean-up.

In a fast-flowing river, the sticky mess will ball up and travel for miles. Think what will happen in the ocean.

The fumes from solvent evaporation kill foliage and sicken people and wildlife. And one more thing. After the solvent is removed from the oil in Asia, the solvent is shipped back to B.C. in tankers and pumped back to Alberta to be used again. This stuff is a poison.

Is there a financial benefit to the people of B.C.? The construction employment is short-term. A finished pipeline is run by a handful of people.

At the loading terminals, a few long-term jobs will be created but not enough to outweigh the cost of a spill.

The paltry tax collected from this industry disappears behind the subsidies. This is the dirtiest and most expensive oil to produce in the world.

The world price for oil is falling fast because the Arabs are putting us out of the oil business before we even really get started.

But even if the pipeline is successful, it will cost the people of B.C. a fortune in the end.

When it all falls apart we will be left to clean up the mess. This is a financial millstone around the neck of the B.C. people.

Please don’t fall for the pretty pictures and nice downhome people you see on TV. This is a commercial trying to get you to buy.

The dam is going to take a full 10 years to build before it produces a single megawatt of power, so the sooner we get things going the better. After all, who can imagine what the clean energy demands on our province’s power grid will be a decade from now, in 2024?

It could be LNG, it could be new, next generation mines and processing plants, it could be something that’s not

even on the radar yet. Whatever it is, having a robust supply of reliable, cleanly generated energy is an economic asset that gives us an ongoing edge in a world dealing with climate change and the need to lower carbon emissions.

Bravo to all those who worked to make Site C a reality.

I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming.

Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes.

Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony.

But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action.

This Christmas season, 557 Langley preschool and kindergarten students joined the 2,000 Wind & Tide preschoolers from across the Lower Mainland to partner with Union Gospel Mission in providing essential food items and specially chosen gifts for 56 low-income families.

Each Christmas, Rachel Cram, founding director of Wind & Tide schools, prompts her many young students to learn about the needs in their own communities and to play a part in solving those needs. She does so through UGM’s Gifts of Hope initiative, where each year her students assemble holiday hampers for families in need.

“Through the generosity of the children at Wind & Tide and other donors, we’ve been able to provide 200 hampers for families as well as some singles,” said Barb Atkins, manager of UGM’s Women and Families Centre.

“Each hamper is packed with all of the food items needed to prepare a tasty Christmas dinner, including gift cards to purchase a turkey, groceries and dairy as well as a personalized gift for each family member. These hampers, valued at $350, provide families with much needed relief during the holidays.”

UGM delivers the hampers to low income families in Vancouver’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

In November, each school received a list of needed food items, as well as information about the gender, age, interests and hobbies of each family member. Then the students at Wind & Tide got to work, bringing donations from home, gathering food, carefully choosing toys and gifts and slowly watching the hampers fill.

“It is quite amazing to witness the students experiencing the joy of giving to those in need,” said Wind & Tide education director, Suzie Warneke.

“At age three and four, these children understand this. They see the importance of teamwork and how together they can make a difference.”

Warneke explained that hampers are not only important to those who receive them, but also to those who give.

“Each year the families and children make this a priority. I see how this initiative impacts families and how grateful they are to teach their children how to give,” she said.

Record-breaking night for KPU AWARDS NIGHT CELEBRATES STUDENTS’ SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) held its biggest awards night yet, with a record-breaking $750,000 in scholarships, awards and bursaries going to KPU students this fall.

Hosted by the KPU Foundation at Richmond’s River Rock, the 26th annual scholarships and awards dinner — which combined KPU’s general awards night with the School of Business awards — saw over 470 students, donors and KPU representatives come out to celebrate student success and achievement.

The event was the biggest awards night in the universi-

ty’s 31-year history, with the most dollars donated, awards received – over 440 – and guests in attendance.

“When we receive awards, we gain more than support, or the means to further our education. Recognition by donors, by industry, by our university empowers the students who will be the next generation of intellectuals, visionaries, activists and entrepreneurs. Being recognized as valuable citizens within our community empowers our potential,” said Sana Sohel, a Faculty of Arts creative writing major who spoke on behalf of KPU students.

The keynote on behalf of donors and industry was given by Envision Financial President Shelley Besse, who spoke of the importance of supporting students and post-secondary education.

“At Envision Financial, our organization is committed to making a meaningful difference in our local communities and to partnering with other local organizations who share our commitment,” she said. “That’s why we are proud to be long-time supporters of Kwantlen Polytechnic University,” Besse said. “KPU is a well-respected educational institution

that is known for academic excellence and for the high caliber of its students. We are proud to support Kwantlen in its efforts to ensure that tomorrow’s leaders receive an exceptional educational experience.”

Each year, the KPU Foundation hosts its annual scholarships and awards night in one of the communities KPU serves. In addition to providing students with recognition and financial support, the event allows donors to meet their award recipients and network with future potential employees. Canada calls for Theodore It is a tournament that hundreds of thousands of Canadians tune in to watch every holiday season. And this year, it will feature a local connection as Aldergrove’s Shea Theodore has made the final roster for Canada’s entry to the 2015 world junior hockey championship.

The tournament begins Dec. 26 and runs until Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal.

Theodore was one of seven defencemen named to the final roster. Ten had been invited to the team’s training camp.

This is his first time playing for Canada’s world junior team, but he has represented his country before at the world U18 championships.

Theodore, who played his minor hockey with the Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association, was a first round draft pick (26th overall) of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2013 NHL Draft.

The 19-year-old plays in the Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds.

In 10 games with Seattle this season, he has two goals and six assist.

Theodore had hurt his elbow in training camp with the Ducks and he played five games with Anaheim’s AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals, registering three goals and two assists before joining Seattle.

Last season, he was the Thunderbirds’ top scorer with 22 goals and 79 points in 70 games.

Former Stealth coach passes away

The lacrosse community is in mourning with the passing of former Vancouver Stealth coach Chris Hall.

Hall, who stepped down following the 2014 National Lacrosse League season after a cancer recurrence, passed away on Sunday morning with his family by his side.

He was 64 and had battled cancer for the past four years. “(He) was a tremendous coach but more importantly he was an outstanding person and role model who brought out the best in his players,” said Stealth captain Curtis Hodgson, who called the loss devastating.

“The courage he showed while leading our team over the last several seasons despite his health issues have had an enormous impact on us all.”

“Words cannot express the loss and emptiness that we are all feeling right now,” said Stealth president and general manager Doug

Locker. “(Chris) was a dear friend, mentor and confidant. His battle over the last several years has served as an inspiration to all of us who watched him bravely fight this terrible illness.

“He will forever be remembered in our organization and throughout the lacrosse community for all the good he brought to the game we love.”

In September, Hall was inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame.

He was one of only three head coaches to have won NLL Champions Cup titles with two different organizations, winning with Calgary in 2004 and the Stealth in 2010.

Hall won 85 games over his 12year head coaching career, which is third all-time in the league. He was the NLL co-coach of the year in 2010.

Lightning strike Cougars in tournament final The Langley Lightning avenged their lone loss of the weekend, winning when it mattered most.

The girls midget C1 house hockey team defeated the Prince George Cougars 2-0 in the championship finals of the rep division at a hockey

tournament in Penticton.

The Lightning had gone 1-1-1 in round robin play, beating the Penticton Vees 4-1, losing to the Cougars 3-2, and tying the Calgary Chaos 2-2 to advance to the championship final.

I also feel it lost a little bit of personality along its way to adulthood. I’ll forever love them, quirks and all.
