A dozen homes were evacuated after a chemical spill occurred outside a residence in the 1500 block of Middle Rd. on the Songhees Nation land.

View Royal fire department and the West Shore RCMP responded to the mobile home park Thursday night and quickly established a perimeter to secure the area, while the Capital Regional District’s hazardous material response team investigated the substance.

The tenant was improperly disposing of what appeared to be sodium hydroxide, said Const.

Alex Berube. CRD HazMat was still conducting on-site tests at press time to confirm the exact nature of the substance.

Sodium hydroxide, more commonly known as caustic soda or lye, is an industrial strength detergent.

The evacuated residents were able to return to their homes the same night, and there were no injuries from the spill.

B.C. Ambulance charge dispatcher Ryan Hendren often volunteers to work Christmas day so that fellow dispatchers who have young children can enjoy Christmas morning with their families.

Whether or not you actually celebrate Christmas, chances are you regularly get Dec. 25 off from work every year.

It’s a tradition that most of Canada takes for granted, but Santa’s not the only one who pulls an all-nighter on Christmas. Police, the fire department and other emergency services step up again and again, sacrificing family time to keep us all safe.

“Everyone accepts that we run 24-7,” says Ryan Hendren, a charge dispatcher for B.C. Ambulance and a paramedic for 14 years come January.

“We’re willing to help as many people as we can. Christmas is no different.”

But just because it’s a work day doesn’t mean it’s ordinary.

“Because of the nature of the work we do, (your co-workers are) sort of like your second family,” he says. “Even though everybody’s at work, there’s definitely a family feel to it.

of Christmas cheer and tries to pull together a dinner.”

It’s a little disjointed with paramedics running in and out the door all day and night, but there’s still a sense of the holiday amidst the hubbub.

“I make the best of it,” Hendren says. “I come to work and wear a Santa hat and try to keep everybody cheerful.”

Keeping that spirit alive will no doubt be easier now that they’re in a brand-new building on Leigh Road. The switch from an antiquated facility on Jacklin Road was a sorely needed upgrade, he says.

“We went from essentially a small, dark cave to a bright, modern, very spacious, brand spanking new building. It literally has been night and day.

“Our home feels like a very comfortable place to be.”

Though Hendren, 34, lives in Saanich and has worked at dispatch centres throughout the Victoria region and up Island, he says the West Shore is “definitely home base for us.”

In addition to saving lives and dispatching ambulances,

he has also helped make the holidays better for his coworkers over the years.

“It can be tough on people with younger kids, if they’re not there for Christmas morning. I don’t actually have kids, so for me personally, it’s not as big a deal.”

Hendren and others who don’t have little ones waiting anxiously for Santa’s arrival will often offer to trade shifts, where possible. He’s worked many times on Dec. 25 and it usually comes from trading with someone who wants the day off.

Regardless of family commitments, the men and women who have devoted their careers to saving lives and protecting the public take their roles very seriously, and work with dedication every day, holiday or not, Hendren says.

“There are so many people who are so driven to help people any way they can, and they really deserve recognition for that.” acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

For many pet owners, their furry four-legged friends are bone-afide members of the family, with presents under the tree at Christmas and even their own stockings.

It’s important to remember that with all the excitement, extra food and decorations, the holidays can bring a handful of unexpected hazards for the animals in the house, from eating improper food to much more serious dangers.

“The most common thing we

see over the holidays is gastroenteritis, just from getting into things they shouldn’t,” says Dr. Chris Collis, veterinarian and owner of Eagle Rise and Glenview animal hospitals. “We’ll see upset stomachs up to the risk of pancreatitis just from overindulging.”

Turkey drippings, table scraps and leftover bones can make a dog howl with joy, but high fat and rich foods are one of the biggest culprits of the season.

Resist the puppy dog eyes and avoid having to clean up more than just wrapping paper scraps.

“It’s really no different than in humans,” says Collis. “If you overindulge, there’s likely going to be a price for that.”

Ensure dogs in particular avoid chocolate and raisins

completely as well, as they can cause more serious, and sometimes fatal, effects.

The many varieties of holiday plants look festive, but if there are cats in the house, it may be best to pass if the felines are inclined to nibble.

Holly and poinsettia ingestion can cause mouth irritation, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea or lethargy. Mistletoe has the potential to cause cardiovascular problems, but is more likely to cause stomach upset. And many types of lilies are one of the most deadly, with the potential to cause kidney failure in cats, even if they just drink the water out of the vase.

If you’re expecting a lot of company over the holidays, it’s good to know how your pet han-

dles the influx of people.

“If your pet is prone to anxiety from the noise and extra activity, like doorbells and lots of people, it’s okay to put them in a quiet room with a favourite bed and toy if they’re overwhelmed,” says Michelle Pedro of Island Pet Source. “You can also bring home a meaty bone or a long lasting chew to occupy your dog.”

As for tree decorations, make sure ornaments are firmly affixed, keep electrical cords tucked safely away and avoid leaving out ribbons or bows.

“Nobody uses tinsel anymore, thank goodness, but I’d still be cautious of anything that cats take a particular interest in playing with,” Collis says. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Make healthy travel choices The holiday lights are up, casting a warm glow over the streets and sidewalks of the West Shore and inspiring us all to enjoy the best of this Christmas season.

But there are another series of lights we see this time of year that don’t carry such a happy message.

The flashing lights of police cruisers and emergency vehicles serve as an unfortunate reminder that all too many holiday celebrations end in tragedy.

Police on the West Shore and across the province are in the midst of their annual Christmas CounterAttack campaigns, targeting impaired drivers in an effort to keep the roads safe.

The consequences of a single bad choice can haunt you for the rest of your life.

And those bad choices add up to thousands of injuries and dozens of deaths each year as a result of alcohol-related crashes in B.C. The good news is the numbers are decreasing, with the number of fatalities down significantly from just a few years ago.

But there is no acceptable level of carnage on B.C. roads. Each and every one of those crashes represents a tragedy for someone’s family, and the saddest part is that they could all have been easily avoided.

There’s just no reason to take chances with your own or your neighbour’s safety. And don’t kid yourself, if you’ve had too much to drink, no amount of coffee, food or fresh air will make you sober.

So when you’re celebrating the season this year, make sure those celebrations include planning for a safe ride home. Arrange for a designated driver, call a taxi, plan to stay over with friends – anything it takes to prevent adding to the crashes on B.C. roads, not to mention the potential loss of your driver’s licence.

Think of the victims, think of the potential consequences, think of what you would have to tell your family – just please think, and let us all enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on humancaused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes.

Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony.

But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action.

I’ll discuss that next week.

A recent incident in Ottawa, which exposed another military poser, has stuck an emotive chord with Canadians coast to coast, particularly since the poser chose to appear at the National War Memorial, less than 75 metres from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the site of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo’s murder.

However, one only has to attend services at a local cenotaph to find members of so-called veteran’s service organizations wearing selfawarded medals, unearned hazardous skill badges and bogus foreign insignia. Their selfish actions do nothing but insult the gallantry, dedication to duty, integrity, honesty and the sacrifices made by members of Canadian Armed Forces.

We remember the blood, sweat and tears that it took to earn a piece of metal attached to coloured ribbon, a strip of cloth or an embroidered badge, and that is why we get somewhat emotional about them.

Fakery is not flattery, it’s cold, calculated deception with the goal of having one’s selfesteem issues assuaged by basking in the reflected glory of honourable men and women who have selflessly served this great country.

One must ask how many receptions honouring veterans have these fakers been invited to due to their “special status and position of honour “ within their respective groups?

How many have attended sporting events, battlefield pilgrimages, provincial or national conventions? How many of these fakers, embellishers and out-right fraud artists have received thanks for their service by an unsuspecting public?

If the answer is one, then even that is one too many.

As 18th-century British writer Samuel Johnson once said, “Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier or not having been at sea.”

Jesse Roper remembers gripping a knotted rope, galloping off a cliff and flinging himself into Matheson Lake.

As the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season hits the home stretch, bus trips have become a little less ominous for the Westshore Wolves.

The Colwood-based team, firmly positioned in second place in the South Division, is finally learning how to win on the road.

“When we started the season, it seemed like every bus trip we made, we would lose, but we were really good at home,” said Wolves’ head coach Brian Passmore of contests against North Division teams.

After losing their first five games north of Mill Bay, the Wolves won their next two (their final true road trip of the season was last Friday against the division-leading Storm in Campbell River, after the ***Gazette’s early holiday deadline).

“We’re getting almost to .500 on the road, so we’ve got that somewhat figured out,” Passmore said. “Sometimes it’s mental and how you prepare for those games.”

The South-leading Victoria Cougars and the Storm

have put distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. The Wolves are the only team that has reasonably kept pace, becoming the thirdfastest team to hit the 20-win mark a couple of weeks back.

Westshore has taken points off every team in the league this season, including a big 6-5 win over perennial powerhouse Victoria. On the other hand, they’ve given up at least one point to every team but Peninsula, a fact Passmore says the top teams haven’t experienced.

Learning how to win on the road, especially against teams with worse records, is something the Wolves need to improve further on as the playoffs draw near, he said.

That, and cutting down on the kind of turnovers that force the Cougars to score four or five goals to win.

“You learn from your mistakes. We’ve gone through our up and downs this season; we just ask that they not make the

same mistakes over and over.

And that starts with practice.”

Last week’s win over the Cougars saw both teams forecheck hard and show their speed in a high-flying game.

The Wolves impressed by making the Cougars pay for sloppy play with the man advantage, scoring shorthanded twice in the second period.

We know we’ll get our scoring chances, but we don’t wanna get into those 6-5 and 7-6 games like we did the other night. It’ll be more like 2-1 and 3-1 in the playoffs.”

A full disposal ban on kitchen scraps at Hartland landfill takes effect January 1, 2015. The ban will divert compostable items like vegetables, meat, bones, grains, dairy products, fruit and soiled paper that currently take up thirty percent of the landfill. At the same time, diverted kitchen scraps will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will be processed into beneficial compost.

Daisy recalls that tomatoes were not available at Christmas until 1963 and families had at most two cookbooks – the standard being the Five Roses Flour Cookbook – so there wasn’t much variety, either.

Despite the changes over the years, one thing remains the same: Mandarin or Japanese oranges, individually wrapped in green paper, available only for the season. In 1926, Daisy’s first orange of the season would be from the toe of the Santa stocking given at the concert. The family would have one box of the exotic oranges that would be opened only on Christmas morning.

If dinner is always at your house, ask another family member to entertain this year.

Throughout the season, make an effort to accept invitations to holiday events. You may be surprised by how an evening out can lighten your spirits even while you are missing someone special.

If you are concerned with the prospect of facing long, empty days, then why not share your time with others while doing some good? Volunteer at your local food bank, church group or homeless shelter. You’ll feel the warmth of good company, and your help will be appreciated.
