Welcoming a brand-new Waterwheel Square Chemainus revitalization: Square expected to bring new life to downtown Niomi Pearson

It’s a view Ross says she looks forward to enjoying when the Chamber’s Visitor Centre moves into the expanding Chemainus Museum building next spring, if all goes well.

Chemainus Museum secretary and archivist Norma Greer says the exterior of the building should be completed by the end of the year, with interior work getting started in 2015.

The Chemainus Valley Historical Society has raised approximately $400,000 to add roughly 4,500 square feet to the current museum building. They are looking to fundraise an additional $200,000 to complete the project and hold a grand opening in time for the museum’s 25th anniversary in 2016.

“It’s needed here because we’ve grown so much,” said Greer.

The expansion will not only double available space for both displays and archives, but also improve the quality of the displays as well.

The final phase of the project will involve the join-

ing of the old with the new museum, finishing and remodeling all areas and reorganizing all displays.

“We’re hoping to do all-new, better-appealing displays and have more technology in the displays,” said Greer. “We’ve got thousands of pictures in our archives that nobody actually gets to see.”

The Chemainus Revitalization Plan was adopted by council in 2011 and calls for several more projects, including a new skateboard park, which is currently underway, and improvements to modernize Chemainus Road and Willow Street and the waterfront.

In the new year, work will begin to remove the old fire hall in preparation for a new library.

“It’s quite a comprehensive plan and it’s over a number of years, but we’re picking away at it,” said MacKay. An official opening for Waterwheel Square is in the works, but a date has not been set.

There has been much in the media about taking baby ASA for 5-10 years to reduce your risk of getting bowel, stomach and esophageal cancers. We know we can reduce cancer risk by stopping smoking and losing weight but this ASA method is showing promise. But, DO NOT start taking this drug without your doctor’s approval. It has side effects which can be damaging.

Before you take it, talk about it. Good advice to follow with any medication.

or the first time in 30 months, the Cowichan Valley has a Board of Education.

Veteran trustee Candace Spilsbury was elected chairwoman of the new seventrustee school board that was sworn in Wednesday night. Barb de Groot will serve as vice-chair.

“It is an exciting time for us as a new board and it is an exciting time for the community as an elected board returns to be a strong voice for our students,” Spilsbury said in a media release.

Also on the board are Elizabeth Croft, Randy Doman, Rob Hutchins, Cathy Schmidt and Joe Thorne.

They will serve four years, instead of the three years previous trustees were elected for. In another significant change, the seven trustees is a reduction from the previous nine who served School District 79.

“We have much work to do and I am confident our collective commitment to students, collaboration, integrity, and service to our community will give us a unity of purpose which is all about excellent education for our students,” Spilsbury said.

he transformation of Waterwheel Square in Chemainus came full circle this week as municipal workers put the final touches on the first of several revitalization projects planned for Mural Town.

According to John MacKay, director of engineering and operations for the Municipality of North Cowichan, workers were finishing up a little electrical and stone work in the hopes of having it complete in time for Saturday’s Little Town Christmas.

“The majority of it is done,” he said before the News Leader Pictorial went press. “We’re just tying up loose ends.”

Construction on the Waterwheel parking lot began at the end of August so as to not disrupt summer traffic for businesses and tourism in the area.

The revamp has included a total redesign of the parking lot to include a dedicated parking area for tour buses in Waterwheel Lane, new trees, lighting, benches, picnic tables and power outlets for market vendors.

“The background of the trees and shrubs all makes it look very attractive, and yet we’ve managed to keep our most convenient parking spaces and also create a wonderful gathering area at the lookout, which we’ve never had before,” said North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure.

“We’ve always used the parking lot as a town square, but it really didn’t look like a town square.

Now it’s going to be a focal point for anybody coming into Chemainus.”

The new multi-use venue has kept well within its $900,000 budget, says MacKay. The budget had to be revised from preliminary projections of $802,000 when tenders came in higher than expected, and a charging station for electric cars was also added.

“When it first started, there was some negativity, but as the project’s proceeded and people can see what they’re getting, the feedback has been very positive,” he said.

Chemainus and District Chamber of Commerce co-ordinator Jeanne Ross says the project will have a big impact on Wednesday Markets when they start up again in May. “Now there’s going to be more shelter and trees — it will be a much nicer place for the market to

he News Leader Pictorial’s parent company, Black Press, has acquired a number of newspaper titles, related publications and digital properties from Glacier Media.

“We have purchased the following; The Nanaimo Daily News, The Harbour City Star, the Alberni Valley Times, the Cowichan Citizen, Parksville Oceanside Star, Tofino/ Ucluelet Westerly News, the Comox Valley Echo, and Campbell River Courier on Vancouver Island as well as the Surrey Now, Langley Advance and Maple Ridge Times in the Lower Mainland,” Black Press president and CEO Rick O’Connor said in a statement.

Black Press will take over operations in Courtenay-Comox, Ucluelet/ Tofino and Oceanside on Jan. 1 and the remainder of the publications and their websites on March 2. In a separate transaction, Black Press is also selling the Tri-City News, Burnaby New West Newsleader and the Richmond Review to Glacier Media.

They will assume operational control of these operations on March 2, as well.

“While we are pleased with the acquisitions, we are disappointed to be selling these excellent community newspapers.

We believe in the value our Black Press colleagues at these newspapers have created and the many long time staff members will be missed,” O’Connor said.

“However, as we move through these changing times in media, it is important that we align our strategic interests to better position the company for the future.

“We are great believers in community newspapers and the value they provide. With these changes, we believe readers and advertisers will be better served and the company will be stronger moving forward.”

Police are looking for information about this missing excavator.

RCMP dig for help in excavator theft

A

t 25 tonnes, it’s not the kind of thing easily targeted by a shoplifter or a thief versed in the fine art of smash-and-grab.

But it has been swiped nonetheless.

Shawnigan RCMP are looking for the public’s help in locating an excavator that has been missing since early November.

Const. Jordan Luscombe issued a media release recently about the Nov. 3 theft of an orange 1991 Hitachi hydraulic excavator, model EX200 from 829 Shawnigan Lake Rd at the south end of Shawnigan Lake.

“At the time of the theft the excavator was left unattended visible to the roadway,” Luscombe said.

Local government officials celebrate a $25,000 physical literacy grant at Fuller Lake Arena.

Grant aims to promote physical literacy for kids

Cowichan: gets $25,000 RBC Grant under the Canadian Sport For Life program

C

owichan has been handed $25,000 to help kids stay active and fit.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has been awarded a $25,000 RBC grant to promote physical literacy under the Canadian Sport For Life program.

Physical literacy is defined as helping and encouraged kids between the ages of two and 12 to become competent and confident in a wide range of fundamental movement skills. This includes running, jumping, throwing, agility, balance, coordination, and speed.

According to a media release about the grant, kids nationally are meeting just 5% of our physical activity guidelines, and are spending more than seven hours per day in front of screens. The grant is aimed at improving that situation.

Recreation staff from Ladysmith, North Cowichan, South Cowichan, Cowichan Lake, and the Island Savings Centre will share the grant, using it to implement suitable programs.

The release states representatives from KidSport Cowichan, School District 79, and Our Cowichan Communities Health Network are part of the local planning team.

“Our vision is that the Cowichan communities will be the most livable and healthy in Canada,” said former CVRD Chairman Rob Hutchins. “Grant opportunities like this one from RBC help us deliver services to make that happen.”

On December 15, 2014, the Canadian Coast Guard was informed that the vessel “Sunrise Dancer” was partially sunk and discharging oil in Cowichan Bay. The “Sunrise Dancer” is described as a white Chris Craft, approximately 10m (30’) in length, from Maple Bay, B.C. The owner of the vessel is responsible for taking measures to prevent/minimize pollution. As no action was being undertaken by the owner, the Canadian Coast Guard had the vessel removed from the water. The vessel is being stored ashore until an owner can be located.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans/Canadian Coast Guard is now seeking information on the ownership of the vessel. Any parties having knowledge of or interest in the vessel are requested to contact the undersigned prior to December 29, 2014.

Failing which, the Canadian Coast Guard will take any action it deems fit in the circumstances, including removal, sale, destruction, disposal of the vessel and its contents, and the file will be passed to the Ship Source Oil Pollution Fund for the purpose of cost recovery.

Here’s to a green Christmas

E

veryone wants a white Christmas.

But these days just as many people seem to be interested in greening their holiday.

Here are 14 tips designed to do exactly that.

1. Bring a reusable bag when heading out to the store for some holiday shopping.

2. Make unique and recyclable gift tags by reusing the fronts of old holiday cards.

3. Wrap your gifts in recyclable materials such as magazine ads, old maps, newspaper, or in reusable items such as cloth bags, scarves, tea towels or tablecloths.

4. Save used wrapping paper for next year or use it to store delicate holiday decorations.

5. Use a potted spruce or evergreen if a tree is a holiday tradition in your family; they can be planted in the garden later.

6. Decorate with everyday foods such as cranberries, popcorn, nuts and fruit, which can be fed to birds or composted after the holidays.

7. Make your own gifts: paintings,

knitted or crocheted items, jams, preserves or baked goods. Your recipient will appreciate the time and effort put into their gift.

8. Give “experience gifts” like tickets to the local theatre, a concert or sports event, or gift certificates to local restaurants or spas, or services.

9. Donate to a charity in someone’s name.

10. Shop all year long at the Thrift Shop and garage sales and flea markets for second hand gifts and put them in a gift stash. That way manufacturers do not receive the message, “Hey, they are buying this stuff, we better make more.”

11. Go to www.storyofstuff.org and watch their videos.

12. Participate in freecycle which is on the internet where people exchange things free of charge. The only stipulations are the items have to be free and legal. In the Cowichan Valley go to: www. cvrecycle.ca or go to www.freecycle.org to find one near you.

13. Buy locally produced foods and goods.

14. Share this with others.
