B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher Following are highlights from Tom Fletcher’s year-end interview with NDP leader John Horgan. For an extended version, see the Opinion section at www.kootenayadvertiser.com TF: The B.C. Liberal government has given every indication they’re going to proceed with the Site C dam on the Peace River. What do you think? JH: I’ve always

maintained that it’s a good project, but it’s a question of when to add another $8-910-12 billion onto the backs of ratepayers. First of all, go to the B.C. Utilities Commission and find out if this is the power you need and if this is the time to build it. The government refuses to do that, and I think that’s just an Achilles heel in this process. TF: You voted for the liquefied natural gas income tax to provide certainty, and then you immediately said you would work to increase the LNG tax in 2017, before any major project could be started. How is that certainty? JH: I thought it was important that the investment community in this sector knew there was bipartisan support for LNG in British Columbia. But we went from a seven per cent [tax] to a 3.5 per cent because of a

softening market. If there is a decline in return to the province because of a softening market, then surely over a 25-year period – not just between now and 2017, but if the market conditions change and prices go up – I think British Columbians would want their government to make sure they were getting a fair share of that benefit. TF: Why did you vote against the LNG environmental legislation? JH: They said prior to the election that LNG would be the greenest in the world. And then when they tabled legislation they left out 70 per cent of the emissions from upstream activity. TF: Gordon Campbell’s great goal for greenhouse gases, 33 per cent reduction by 2020, can that be reached assuming a substantial LNG development? JH: I find it difficult to believe that they’re going to achieve those results. [Environment Minister] Mary Polak has a different point of view, and our job as opposition is to hold them accountable to the numbers that they passed into law, and we’re going to do that. One of the three sectors, housing, energy and transportation, where emission profiles can be managed downward is transportation. And the government has wasted 18 months talking about a referendum on [Metro Vancouver transit.] TF: What’s your top priority for 2015? JH: I think the public is going to increasingly

find affordability issues to be the challenge. We didn’t spend as much time as I had hoped to on hydro rate increases, ICBC. When the government balanced the budget, they did it by selling assets, and by increasing costs at their Crown corporations and then pulling that revenue in for budget purposes. We’re going to have to use new technologies and means of communication to better explain to people what the government’s doing to them. TF: What should happen with the agricultural land reserve? JH: I don’t think there was a groundswell of opposition to the ALR, quite the opposite in fact, and the commission has in my opinion, infinite flexibility to meet the demands of development in northern areas as well as urban centres. I’m going to make sure that [agriculture critic] Lana Popham, who as you know is fearless on this issue, is let loose on [Agriculture Minister] Norm Letnick, and we’re going to dog this issue up to the next election. The Perfect Present Great gift ideas for the parent or grandparent in your life

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Giving a gift that makes your parents or grandparents feel less lonely is a great idea. Submitted

You’d love to give a

gift to your nana and grandpa this Christmas, but you don’t even know what to give your parents, let alone your grandparents! Here are some gift ideas that are sure to delight them. Does your grandmother always feel cold? Give her a cozy clothing item, such as a wool sweater, a plush bathrobe, a shawl, or slippers. Your grandparents would also appreciate cushions and warm blankets to snuggle up in when sitting in

for kids

front of the television or fireplace. Board games are sure to delight your grandparents, especially if you take the time to play with them. In fact, your company would be more precious than the gift itself. To combine the practical with a bit of fun, think of memory games or those

that stimulate your observation skills. Do your grandparents live alone? Help them to feel a bit less lonely by giving them a CD of some music they love, a DVD of their favourite movie or television series, jigsaw puzzles, books, or something to knit. If your grandparents

*

have vision problems or difficulty holding objects, many games are available in versions adapted for seniors. There are also very practical accessories, such as playing card holders, and some books are published in large print editions. You can also find audiobooks for those

who don’t read much anymore, and knitting needles in larger sizes. The best gifts are often the simplest: a greeting card containing a handwritten note, a framed family photo, or simply some of your time, to spend a while together.

When young people leave home to move into an apartment for the first time, often as students, there isn’t just furniture and appliances to think about. Here are some practical gift ideas for those flying the nest and who only have a limited budget. For the kitchen A few dishes are always useful, unless frozen meals are the only item on the menu! Don’t just stop at plates, bowls, glasses, cups, and utensils. You can also offer pots, pans, cookie sheets, and plastic dishes. For proud pastry chefs measuring cups, muffin and cake pans, a whisk, and wooden spoons are also essential; don’t forget a large bowl for mixing the ingredients. Some decorative itemS Lamps and accent furniture are not necessarily essential, but they are very useful and make an

apartment much more comfortable. other items, such as curtains, are not always affordable to start with. Of course, choosing the right colour can be difficult, but you can always go for neutral tones. houSehold linenS Oven mitts, aprons, towels, washcloths, tea towels, and dish cloths — they may not be the gifts your young person is dreaming of, but they’re so practical. And it’s better than receiving a garbage can or cleaning products! Plus, household linens can be quite expensive, so you’ll really be helping them out. The possibilities are endless; just think about what you have and what you couldn’t do without. Bathroom accessories, a toaster, rugs, coffeemaker, and why not a chocolate fondue set too? Some of us couldn’t live without one of those!

MADD has been a major force for many years in bringing awareness to the problem of drunk driving. “We are pleased to be flying the red ribbons from our City vehicles,” he said. Stetski added that recent crime statistics compiled by the RCMP revealed an interesting trend — perhaps a disturbing trend. Crime in every category is down locally, he noted, except in the area of impaired

driving. There were seven total impaired driving charges and refusal charges in 2013, and 13 such charges in 2014 (an increase of 85.7 per cent). There were 47 Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs — a 90 day suspension) in 2013, and 62 in 2014 (an increase of 31.9 per cent). The totals of both combined were up 38.9 per cent. The statistics beg the question if the trend

is because of more impaired drivers on the roads, or the result of more police enforcement. Cpl. Parker said there could be no definite answer; however, the implementation of the IRPs had freed up much patrol time for police officers, and across B.C., statistics showed that injuries and fatalities as the result of impaired driving were down. At the ribbon cutting ceremony, a new official sign calling on citizens to report impaired drivers was unveiled. MADD Canada red ribbons are available at City Hall and Bridge Interiors. of Cranbrook to tie a MADD Canada red ribbon to their antenna, side mirror or other visible location on the vehicle and/or on their keychain. “It is our hope that the red ribbon will remind people not to drive impaired, not to get in a vehicle with an impaired driver, and to report impaired drivers,” Sigurdson said. Cpl. Shayne Parker of the Cranbrook RCMP said that across B.C. and Canada, the RCMP runs campaigns to combat impaired driving. “It’s one of our focusses,” Parker said. “And now that we’re approaching the holiday season we’ll be stepping it up.” In his remarks, former Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski said

kicked off its annual Project Red Ribbon campaign in November, with a ribbon cutting at City Hall. Project Red Ribbon is MADD Canada’s largest and longest-running public awareness campaign, is designed to combat impaired driving during the holidays. It runs until the first Monday after New Year’s (January 5). Katryna Sigurdson, MADD Community leader for Kimberley and Cranbrook, presided over the event at City Hall. She said that every day, on average, four Canadians are killed and 207 more are injured due to alcohol and drug-related crashes. With the involvement of local businesses, the campaign is asking residents

Counterattack 2014

Only a small percentage Submitted

A common misconception about the impaired driving problem is that drinking and driving is a regular occurrence – i.e., everyone does it. The reality however, is that only a small percentage of the population reports that they drive after drinking or when they thought they were over the legal limit. When asked about driving after consuming any amount of alcohol in the past 30 days, 19% of Canadians admitted to doing this in 2009 and just 5.6% of Canadians admitted to driving when they thought they were over the legal limit in the last 12 months. In gauging public knowledge about the extent of the impaired driving problem, arrive alive DRIVE SOBER found

that most people could not correctly identify that 92.4% of drunk driving trips are made by only 4.4% of drivers (Vanlaar et al. 2006). They estimated the percentage of drivers to be much higher. Therefore, the problem is not as widespread as many may believe. The fact is that more people are making the choice to not drive after drinking. Drunk drivers do share some common characteristics including the tendency to drink and drive. But this does not mean that these offenders are all the same. The reality is that some people drive drunk infrequently, others do it often; some are at a relatively low risk of causing a collision, others are at a very high risk. Impaired drivers are one of the most heterogeneous offender

populations in the justice system and they come from all walks of life. The majority of impaired drivers are men, however, the number of female impaired drivers is rising and has become a growing concern. Impaired drivers also represent different ages, levels of education, and professional achievement. The socio-economic status and criminal activity of these offenders also varies greatly. The truth is that the problem has many different parts to it and includes many distinct segments of the population. So it is essential to have a broad range of strategies or countermeasures available to create a comprehensive approach to address the problem.

Do we give others the benefit of the doubt when driving and try to be considerate of them, letting them into our lane, for instance, when we see their blinker is on and they are trying to get over, or do we think only of ourselves when driving? The answer is always the same: it feels very aggressive and dangerous and no one likes to be tailgated. When I follow up that question and ask them if they

Slugs: Endless Slugs, to you drivers who just have to pass other vehicles who are driving to the road conditions, and spray everyone with rocks, and you are no further ahead. You gain nothing, have some respect for others safety and vehicles Hugs: BIG CHRISTMAS HUGS to AUDREY for the wonderful piano entertainment at the Key City Theatre appreciation dinner. You really put everyone into the holiday spirit. THANK YOU Hugs: The biggest hug in the universe for Christmas, the best day of the year. I hope it will be a white one!!! Hugs: A HUGE HUG to Save-On-Foods Meat Men - Don (Cranbrook) and Austin (Kimberley) for your superb customer service! My turkeys cut in half in Kimberley and delivered right to the door in Cranbrook! Awesome job guys! Slugs: To those males of the human species who, in this day and age, STILL believe that a beautiful woman’s head cannot possibly contain a highly functioning brain. You testosterone infused, monosyllabic cave dwellers know who you are.

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Gregarious Gardener

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Gifts for Gardeners 1. Keep Their Toes Toasty. Most gardeners are hearty folks, tending to their plants in all sorts of weather conditions. A good pair of garden shoes or boots will help them stay comfortable while braving the elements. One of the most comfortable, practical, and fun series of waterproof footwear is made by Sloggers. With anything from tall or short boots to clogs and even sandals, they have a stylish shoe for every gardener. 2. Protection All Around. When it comes to protecting oneself from the harmful effects of the sun, nothing beats a good sun hat. For gardeners, look for a light-weight and breathable model with a wide brim. Kneelers or kneeling pads can make a fashion statement with cute designs while serving the gardener beautifully, easing some of the discomfort from long periods of weeding or planting. 3. Dig in without Damage to the Manicure. An accessory that gardeners can hardly get enough of is a pair of well-made gloves. One guideline is to look for gloves with a durable rubber coating or leather pads covering the palms for protection when digging or lifting, as well as nice and light, durable and breathable fabric covering the back. 4. Tools of the Trade. Sturdy, high-quality, welldesigned tools are probably one of the most needed and appreciated gifts you can give any gardener. There is always use for another trowel, planter or pruner. There are tools made for specific gardeners, such as ergonomically formed devices that can ease arthritis or back pain and reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries. 5. For the Birds. Most gardeners love to share their yards with others, from friends and neighbours to winged visitors. Some birds will stick around for the colder months and you can help gardeners attract them with a gift of some top-quality bird food, a decorative feeder or bird bath. 6. Small is Beautiful. Not sure how much room your gardener friend has to play with? Fairy gardening is the art of creating a magical world in the smallest of spaces. From an indoor garden in a decorative pot to a large fairy village in a corner of the garden, the imagination and creativity of the gardener is the limit, so get your friend started and they will likely find a new passion. 7. Living Gifts. Through the winter months, gardeners sometimes get a case of winter blues as they are looking at their snow-covered flower beds and vegetable patches. What better gift to brighten up a dark winter day than a flowering plant? Amaryllis bulbs deliver great reward with spectacular blooms in all different colours, and they are a no-fuss project in any home. 8. Sow a Seed. Seed packages make great stocking stuffers for gardeners who just cannot wait for spring to arrive. You can choose things that will grow indoors, like herbs, lettuce and other greens; or maybe pull together a bouquet of your favourite flowers or a bowl of delicious vegetables. 9. All in the Packaging. How to wrap all the goodies you found for the gardener on your list? Why not put them in a garden tote that will come in handy to hold anything from garden waste to harvested produce. Or you could fill an attractive clay or tin pot that can shine on a patio or porch in the summer. 10. Endless Choice. There is always that person who has everything, but no panic, there is sure to be the perfect gift for them. Why not let the gardeners choose it for themselves? There is no harm in getting them a gift card to their favourite garden centre and come spring, your gift will keep on giving all season long.

Gifts that Give Hope offer an alternative by Dan Schellenberg Gifts That Give Hope’s website states that it promotes meaningful gift giving and support for non-profit organizations by helping communities host alternative gift fairs. Cranbrook was fortunate enough to host one of these gift fairs last month at Western Financial Place, which was the first of its kind held in Canada. Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) is a United States based organization that held its first fair in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and was hosted by a local woman’s giving Circle, raising over $20,000 to help 15 non-profit organizations. Fairs are typically held

in public venues where shoppers meet and learn about non-profit organizations, and make a donation to a cause of their choice in honour of a friend or loved one. In turn, the friend or loved one receives an attractive card with a description of their charitable donation. Furthermore, GTGH fairs give shoppers the opportunity to choose meaningful gifts for people on their gift list, while helping others who are not on anyone’s gift list. Patricia Whalen, Children First manager in Cranbrook, inspired by the concept embraced by GTGH, contacted the organization’s president see Gifts page 21

Kootenay News Advertiser Monday, November 17, 2014 Gifts from page 20

Jeanne Kruidenier and requested that an alternative gift fair be held in Canada, which resulted in the event taking place on November 15th of this year. The fair was adequately staffed by local volunteers and raised $3,500 for 14 local non-profit organizations. The GTGH event in Cranbrook was hosted by the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation and Children First. Generous support was provided by the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group. Jeanne Kruideniers said that “My visit to Cranbrook was a wonderful experience as it was evident the community of Cranbrook has embraced the concept of alternative giving. This, in part, can be attributed to the enthusiasm of the organizers, Patricia Whalen and Riley Wilcox.” Jeanne went on to say that “First year fairs are an introduction to this type of giving; they grow each year as the event becomes a tradition. We see more and more children getting involved with the concept of helping those in need. It is a fantastic way to shop together as a family and make wise choices in gift giving.” The website www. giftsthatgivehope .org/ Canada features a quote from Children

First Manager Patricia Whalen: “The Gifts that Give Hope fair is a fun way to bypass the annual stress of holiday shopping and accumulation of ‘stuff’ while honouring friends and relatives with donations to causes that fit their values.” Children First regional initiatives support and promote the healthy growth and development of young children, birth to six years. Using a community development approach, local groups work together to assess, identify and plan for the unique needs of young children in their community. The Cranbrook and District Community Foundation has three main goals: Building permanent endowments, providing annual grants to local non-profits and fostering community connections that support a safe, healthy, sustainable and vibrant Cranbrook for now and forever. Gifts That Give Hope can be a great and meaningful way to shop this year and every year. It’s not too late to get in on the action for those shopping this holiday season. Visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org/canada to do your online shopping by donating to your local non-profit organizations. Your gift card will be mailed to you so that you can pass it on to the person you have honoured by giving the donation.

you like. Different makes and models use different sizes of screens but most are compact enough (in and around 3-inches) that it won’t interfere with forward visibility. Furthermore, most use wideangle lenses so you have quite a panoramic view. They tend to come in handy if you get into a fender bender and it wasn’t your fault. Hitting the track? – It can be used to film your accomplishments. Memory is stored on SD cards. Depending on how large your SD card is, you can film for hours or program your device to loop every so often. Available online or at your local tech store. OBD2 Bluetooth Connector/ Apps (Under $40 for both) So, you want to know what’s going on with your car via your smartphone. I have the gadgets for you. You’ll need an OBD2 Bluetooth Connector (you can get them as cheap as $10 online) and then an app. Try TorquePro (for Android $4.95) or DashCommand for Apple ($9.99 on the iTunes app store). Simply connect the OBD2 connector into your car’s OBD2 port (usually found underneath the dash) and pair the device with your smartphone. Within the app, you can set certain parameters; i.e. what you want to be displayed. Torque, rpms, power, boost, speed, engine temperatures, you name it. The connector then reads the car’s data and sends it, in real time, to your phone. A cool feature found on TorquePro is the ability to use it as a Head’s Up Display at night. You just place it on your dash, let it reflect of the windshield, and read the data that’s being displayed. Universal Dashboard and Windshield Mount ($50) Handsfree calling has never been easier. Especially with the Logitech [+] drive universal mount. The actual mount will suction to any window in your car or your dash, and your phone/GPS/device is then held in place by a strong magnet. You simply adhere a small thin metal plate onto your tech toy of choice for the magnet to grab. Your device then stays firmly in place even on rougher or the sinuous roads. The great part about it is that when you have attached your phone, you don’t have to fumble with clasps, clamps or rubber bands to make sure it’s secure. You just press it against the mount, the magnetic force does the rest. It just stays in place and doesn’t move. Brilliant. And when you’re done drivsee Gifts page B6

Obituaries Marian Rosalie Smith (nee McClellan) September 24, 1925 ~ December 10, 2014,

Marian passed away with many of her loved ones at her side in Creston, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. Marian was born to W. Norman and Lena McClellan in Edmonton where she completed her education. Marian met the love of her life, George Lewis Smith, while they were both attending U. of A. They were married in 1947 after achieving their degrees in Pharmacy and Medicine. In 1948, they designed and built their log and stone dream home on Hillside in Creston, B.C. In the early years of their 54-year marriage, Marian helped George with his medical practice by maintaining records of all the babies he delivered as well as taking notes during autopsies. Many years later, Marian and the other wives of Creston’s physicians formed the Medical Management Co. that spearheaded the construction and administration of the Family Practice building. Marian was gifted with a beautiful singing voice, which she shared with numerous choirs. She was also very active in, and became a lifetime member of, the United Church Women. Family was where Marian’s gifts shone: she excelled in all aspects of caring for and loving her Ă€ve children. One of Marian’s favourite activities was to be taken for rides around “her beautiful valley.â€? Marian was predeceased by her infant son Brogan, beloved husband Dr. George Smith, brother Norman McClellan, brother and sister-in-law Frank and Phyllis Smith and great-grandson Branson Beales. OBITUARY Marlene Petersen July 27, 1938 – December 11, 2014 Marlene Petersen, of Cranbrook, passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital on December 11, 2014 at the age of 76 after a very short battle with cancer. Marlene was born in McDowell, Saskatchewan and moved to Cranbrook with her mom and dad, Elva and Allan Pocha. She resided in Cranbrook until moving to Alberta where she lived most of her life other than a few years that were spent in Winnipeg, Manitoba and 5 years in Germany. Marlene sold her residence in the Crowsnest Pass last year and returned to Cranbrook. She loved her new home here and worked daily around her yard and inside to have it to her level of perfection. Marlene’s cuisine skills satisfied many appetites. She was a seamstress during her working years and completed a coat made from a pattern that she had designed just a few months before being diagnosed. She had a beautiful voice and enjoyed writing songs, putting music to them and singing them with her guitar. Marlene could do anything that needed to be done around a house including painting, building, refinishing, brick laying, tiling, landscaping and gardening. She was a very independent lady. During her final days the care given to her was foreign as she was always the one to care for others. Marlene will be lovingly remembered by her children, Susan (Darwin) Feil, Shelly (John) White and Cory (Katherine) Petersen; three grandchildren Kaden and Keidrich Feil and Myriah White; brothers, Lornel (Florie) Pocha, Clarence (Elana) Pocha, Floyd (Cheryl) Pocha, Alden (Christine) Pocha and Randy Pocha; sisters, Sylvia (Gordon) Pocha, Trudy (Brian) Clifford and Audrene (Detlaf) Harasiuk; and sisters-in-law Carol Pocha and Debbie Pocha, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Marlene was predeceased by her mother Elva (nee Hinch) Pocha her father Allan Pocha; step dad Harold Hinch; four brothers Carl, Gerald, Lawrence and Lloyd Pocha and two sisters, Diane Bailey and Audrey Pocha, one niece Ione Clark and one nephew Shaun Harasiuk. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook, BC at 2:00 pm. Everyone who knew Marlene is welcome to attend the service.
