Extortion trial ends with guilty verdict BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Shareen Buck watches as her daughter Cadence Thompson, 4, gives Santa some close scrutiny before satisfying herself that the man in the red suit is the real deal at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s pediatric ward Tuesday. Santa spent the day aboard an air ambulance flying to children’s hospital wards on the Island and Lower Mainland.

AIR AMBULANCE crew shuttled the man in red to pediatric wards. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

Instead of thumping reindeer hooves and harness bells, Santa arrived to the whine of a turbine engine and buffeting rotor wash when he touched down at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Tuesday. Santa’s arrival in a Helijet air ambulance was part of B.C. Emergency

Health Services’ annual Christmas toy run, which included Nanaimo in its flight plan this year. Santa and his elf Giselle Manese, a Helijet employee, visited children in NRGH’s pediatric ward. St. Nick’s unexpected appearance drew lots of smiles from some young patients and skepticism from others, such as Cadence Thompson, 4, who said she wasn’t sure what she wanted for Christmas and required a little proof the man in the red suit was really Santa. After seeing Santa pull on his beard, which was real, pat his belly, authenticity of which was never verified, and

touching his ring of silver sleigh bells, Thompson was satisfied he was the real deal and accepted a small teddy bear wearing a T-shirt bearing Helijet’s logo. Emma Montrose, 16, said she hoped to find a Fender acoustic guitar under her Christmas tree, which prompted a conversation with Santa about musical tastes and a promise from Montrose she’d practise diligently. In a place where children are laid low by serious diseases or waiting for surgery, smiles can be a rare commodity in spite of hospital staff’s best efforts. See ‘SANTA’ /4

Robert Frederick Widdifield, an alleged fullpatch member of the Nanaimo Hells Angels, has been found guilty by a B.C. Supreme Court judge for his part in an extortion plot. In his ruling Tuesday, Judge Robin Baird said the charges of extortion and theft over $5,000 against Widdifield stem from an October 2010 incident where a person, who can’t be named due to a publication ban, was ordered to pay $160,000, punched in the face and had a boat taken as “collateral.” Baird said Widdifield didn’t commit the acts of extortion and theft. However, the judge found beyond a reasonable doubt that, within the dates set out in the indictment, Widdifield participated in concert with three others – an alleged Hells Angels member and two associates – in a common unlawful enterprise of extorting and stealing. Widdifield, along with the others, was originally charged shortly after the 2010 incident, but the charges against him were stayed in June 2013, due to court delays. The Crown successfully appealed the ruling to the B.C. Supreme Court. Widdifield’s subsequent trial took place this fall. Given sentencing for Widdifield and two related proceedings are still before the courts, Neil MacKenzie, Crown counsel spokesman, said there wasn’t much Crown could comment on until sentencing was complete. “Certainly this was a case the Crown concluded should be pursued and I think that was reflected in the fact that the Crown pursued the appeal of the judicial stay of proceedings that had been entered earlier in the case, in 2013,” MacKenzie said. A date to set sentencing is Jan. 12. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Transplant patients access follow-up care closer to home

city scene

City hikes rates on water, sewer Sewer and water rates will jump by more than 12 per cent in the New Year. The average sewer and water bill will increase by just over $34 as the City of Nanaimo rolls out a 12.5-per cent rate hike this January. The move is part of a rate hike plan approved in 2012 to set aside dollars for asset management. Water fee increases also cover supply services, like the water treatment plant. Water rates will increase by 7.5 per cent on Jan. 1, increasing costs by $29 annually for a family that uses 220 gallons a day. Sewer rates will increase five per cent, or by $5.35. There will also be a two-per cent rate hike for garbage collection for each residential unit, but users will still pay less than previous years under a new agreement with Multi Material B.C., a city press release says.

Extra bag fee set to increase Residents are about to pay more for taking extra garbage to the curb. The City of Nanaimo has announced it will increase the fee for an extra garbage bag by a dollar on Jan. 1. It’s the first time the rate has changed since 1993. People are able to purchase garbage tags when trash spills over the one-container limit for a maximum two extra bags on collection day. The tags will now cost $3. People can still use the old orange tags they have at home and retailers can continue to sell them at $2 until they run out.

Volunteers sought for Red Nose service By Karl yu The NeWS BulleTIN

Despite a successful run so far, Operation Red Nose is looking for more volunteers. Jeanne Seney, Operation Red Nose coordinator, said the yearly holiday campaign, which sees volunteers acting as designated drivers, picked up 244 people this past weekend. There are 90 volunteers and while there isn’t a shortage, more are welcome. “If we had more people, we could drive more people home,” said Seney. “We’re meeting all our numbers now but we’re getting busier and the more volunteers we have, the more people that we can take home.” The remaining dates for people to donate time to are Friday and

Saturday (Dec. 19-20), Dec. 26-27 and New Year’s Eve. Seney said if people want to volunteer, they need to fill out an application and a police information check, which needs to be dropped off at the RCMP detachment on 303 Prideaux St. She said there isn’t a deadline and prospective volunteers can sign up any time. “We’re just having a great year and just looking for more people to come and join us and have some fun,” Seney said. Those interested in volunteering are asked to call 250-740-6572 or go to www.pacificsportvi.com. Operation Red Nose drivers are available from 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on the above dates. Transplant patients north of the Malahat will be able to access follow-up care closer to home with the opening of a new outpatient clinic in Nanaimo. Island Health has announced a new regional outpatient transplant clinic for Nanaimo, which is expected to open this April. The service, the second of its kind on Vancouver Island, will offer transplant patients counseling, blood work and monitoring of medication that they previously had to get in Vancouver or at Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital. It’s all part of expanding renal services in the central Island, according to Bill Kane, Island Health’s director of renal services, who says travelling over the Malahat is a scary thing for a lot of people, especially in the winter. A large portion of patients – about 175 – who live in the central and north Island will have better access to patient care services closer to where they live, said Kane, who calls it “a positive step forward in providing access to the care patients’ need.” Vince Cownden, a Cobble Hill resident and kidney transplant patient, says he would use the Nanaimo clinic, which he considers an easier drive than Victoria, where he has to cross the Malahat and “go all across the city.” The new clinic would also be tremendously helpful for any-

body north of Cobble Hill, he said. “People who live in Nanaimo even and beyond having to go to Victoria, it’s not just inconvenient, it’s a big deal and ... if your health is not 100 per cent and you are not able to do all the driving that just adds to it,” he said. Nanaimo’s Melanie Kirk, who received her kidney transplant more than a year ago, said there are those who don’t drive or have the transportation to make the trip to Victoria, so “it definitely is an advantage.” She will be three blocks from the new clinic, although has mixed feelings about the service. Kirk has had the same kidney specialist in Victoria for 18 years. “Logically, I understand that with as busy and overcrowded as they are in Victoria, they have to shift some patients,” she said. “I have no reason to not be willing to make the changes with all the benefits of not having to drive down ... but I am kind of hesitant to lose the guy I’ve known for such a long time.” The new clinic, a partnership with B.C. Transplant, will open in 2015 at the kidney care clinic in Beaufort Centre. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Santa brightens children’s day “It’s hard to find cheerful things when they’re in the hospital,” Mark Durban, pediatric ward clinical coordinator. “It’s more books and procedures, so it’s nice to find something to brighten up their day.” Santa was satisfied with his contribution to help kids feel a little bit better. “I just love it and if I could hug them all it would be wonderful,” Santa said. “With children that are in isolation, it breaks my heart because I’d love to give them a hug because they’re very special kids.” Brendan McCormick, chief pilot, said this is the first year he’s piloted the toy run. “This is my first one and it’s just terrific,” McCormick said. “I’ve not had a chance to do it before and I’ll be trying to get back on this one again next year. It’s a lot of fun.” Nanaimo was the second Island stop after Victoria General Hospital. Santa also visited Lower Mainland hospitals.

Dozens of new jobs are expected as Duke Point’s medical marijuana facility prepares to expand. Tilray won approval from Nanaimo city council last week to rezone three Duke Point properties for expansion of its medical grow operation. The company plans to construct a building more than double its current size, which is expected to create an additional 275 jobs once complete, according to a city press release. The expansion still needs to go through permit and regulatory approvals.

Spiritual retreat put up for sale A society has formed to keep the body and spirit of a wellknown Nanaimo retreat centre alive. Bethlehem Retreat Centre property, owned by the Benedictine Sisters of Nanaimo and located at 2371 Arbot Rd. on the shore of Westwood Lake, was put up for sale earlier this year for $2.8 million. The Benedictine Sisters have operated the retreat centre and their monastery at the site since 1987 and now want to retire, according to a press release from the Friends of Bethlehem Retreat Centre Society, which was created in June to purchase the property and keep the retreat operating. “They want to get out of the business,” said Gerry Herkel, society chairman. “They’re an 2014

lot of people these days are turning toward spirituality or seeking a better understanding of what spirituality is all about and so there’s a growing interest in this whole area,” Herkel said. “More and more people are saying, ‘I’m spiritual, but not religious,’ so how do you meet their spiritual needs?” Herkel said the society believes the retreat centre has the capacity to expand programs and become an internationally recognized spiritual retreat. Sister Barbara Rinehart, prioress of the Benedictine #19of Nanaimo, declined Sisters to comment on the sale of the centre. The leader also pledged to reinstate a $15 hourly minimum wage for employees covered under federal jurisdiction. “How do you get someone out of poverty? Often you are talking about young parents, so you have to be able to help them finish their education,” he said, pointing to the need for child care. “And once that happens, then they can start to work, but they won’t be able to work unless they have the ability to have child care ... it’s a virtuous circle instead of a vicious circle. “It’s a circle that has to be completed with help from the government and that’s where we come in.”

New Democrat leader Thomas Mulcair pledged to boost childcare spaces and reinstate a federal minimum wage during a campaign stop in Nanaimo Monday. Mulcair promoted the party’s national child care plan in a press conference at Little Ferns Early Learning Centre, including a million spaces after eight years that would cost parents no more than $15 a day. He says it can cost $1,000 a month for infants in child care, which is a “huge amount of money.” Under his plan the federal government would work with provinces and territories to boost access to child care and provide 60 per cent of the funding. aging group of nuns.” The society and the Benedictine Sisters signed a purchase agreement in September. As part of agreement, the society must be able to show it has investors committed to 75 per cent of the selling price by Feb. 27. “We have to put down a certain amount of money,” Herkel said. “That’s non-refundable, but it’s not a lot of money in the big picture.” The society, which launched its public capital campaign in early December, also needs to come up with $300,000 to cover operation and maintenance costs. Herkel said several churches have expressed interest in investing in the property and because the society wants the retreat to continue as an ecumenical centre, it is also reaching out to groups from other faiths. The Bethlehem Retreat Centre is among the last of the spiritual non-religious retreats on the Island. “I see it as part of a legacy that we’re carrying on, but a

Decking the halls

Staff at Dover House seniors’ facility create Christmas wonderland uses as the basis for the colour and style of decorations throughout the home. Hall-decking was completed in time for the facility’s Christmas open house which hosted more than 100 visitors Nov. 29.

t takes about a week for staff at Dover House to deck the halls for the Christmas season. The annual tradition of filling the facility with Christmas cheer started in 1996 when owner Judy Parsons opened the residence for seniors with cognitive and mobility challenges caused by stroke or dementia. Each common area in the building has an elaborate display of Christmas teddy bears, nutcrackers and other seasonal icons. Every resident’s door gets a garland of poinsettias, pine cones and gold ribbon. The resulting displays are a collaboration between Parsons and Lorraine Tanti, facility support staff worker and head decorator. “She purchases everything – I’ve been learned by the best – and I put it all together,” Tanti said. “I’m allowed to have free rein.” The decorations chosen are traditional, warm and comforting. Parsons is partial to poinsettias, which she

Dover House has 24 residents. With staff running errands and caring for patients, there’s a lot of activity in building, but the elaborate Christmas displays in the hallways and common areas are carefully designed so they don’t interfere with traffic moving through the building, courtyard and gardens. “I have to say, for all the decorations that we have around, I could count on one hand, how

many displays have been disrupted,” Parsons said. “It’s amazing.” Tanti’s tour of the facility goes through the Christmas village, rooms with colour themes of gold, green and glitter, nativity scenes, country themes and a display of more than 40 nutcrackers of various sizes, colours, uniforms and expressions. Tanti moved one nutcracker to the back of the crowd because of his fierce, angry appearance. “These are fun,” said Tanti. “There’s an angry one. That’s the Mad Hatter one, I guess.” Because the home has military veterans in residence, no Christmas decorations go up until after Remembrance Day. Rita Stein, whose sister is a resident, said the effect is like a five-star hotel decorated for the season. “They just put in so much love and effort,” Stein said. “They decorate for every occasion. “This is all done by staff. They don’t have somebody come in and do it. It’s all done from their heart.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Former nuisance property gets makeover with renovations to interior rooms By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

A Haliburton Street hotel, once designated a nuisance property, is getting a makeover. Mike Seargeant took over the Jolly Miner Hotel, also known as the Newport Bar and Grill, located at 540 Haliburton Street, in July and started renovating the hotel’s pub and living quarters. “The building had been neglected over time, mainly because of absentee ownership,” Seargeant said. “By taking it over I’ve been able

to focus on what the building needs.” The Jolly Miner has 20 rooms, each of which is getting new flooring, paint, blinds and steel doors and frames. The entryways to the building are also getting steel door retrofits. The goal is to provide short-term social housing. “Contained in each of the units will be an individual – I call them all-in-one appliance units, like you’d see in a ski chalet – so you’ve got a small sink, a two-burner hotplate, a fridge and countertop,” Seargeant said. “So it gives them privacy and safety, which

are the biggies.” One room was renovated to completion to establish a budget and work on the remaining rooms is ongoing. The upgrades are a redemption for the hotel, which was deemed a nuisance property in 2012. The city removed that status in April of 2013. Randy Churchill, city bylaws services manager, said a meeting in June between the city, police and Mike Seargeant Enterprises was promising and problems at the hotel have “died off the radar” but the city continues to monitor the property.

“They had a really good plan,” Churchill said. “He was taking control of it. He hired a decent manager there and they were definitely making a concerted effort and moving forward.” Seargeant said his staff is working with government social ministries to bring appropriate clientele to the building. Most will be short-term tenants. “It’s certainly not hardcore low-barrier housing,” Seargeant said. “These are some people that work up north and just need a place to

hang their hat when they come back to Nanaimo. There’s a mixture of tenancies.” Once the Jolly Miner pub reopens in the spring, Seargeant can address the second phase of renovations to another pub he owns – the Patricia Hotel at 525 Hallliburton St. That hotel’s bar and band stage areas have been renovated, but now the remainder of the 1890s-era building must be upgraded. “Our focus is going to be on the Jolly Miner and then we’ll turn our efforts to the Patricia,” Seargeant said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

EDITORIAL

Let’s stay safe on dark nights It’s a familiar refrain this time of year. No, not the holiday wishes. Rather, the plea to motorists and pedestrians to take special care while they’re on the streets. This week, two pedestrians died in separate incidents on the Lower Mainland. They join a stark and growing statistic – every December in B.C., an average of seven pedestrians are killed and another 269 are injured. The dark, rainy weather, slippery streets and poor visibility all conspire to make driving more difficult. There’s little we can do about that. But what we can do is make the extra effort to see and be seen. ICBC has a few suggestions. They’re made every year, but they’re worth repeating. To motorists, remain attentive at all times. Not only is it illegal to use a handheld device while driving, the consequences can be deadly. Pay particular attention around intersections where 75 per cent of all pedestrian incidents occur. Watch while turning left or right for pedestrians who have already begun to cross. And remember that the rain makes the roads more slick. So build in a bit more braking time. For pedestrians, never assume that just because you see the vehicles, their drivers see you. Headlights, traffic and other distractions compete with your visibility. Fight back by ensuring you are dressed to be seen; wear reflective clothing, a reflective arm band, or carry a light. Keep your eyes and ears open and focus on what’s happening around you. That means pulling out your headphones, or putting the phone away while crossing a busy street. But the most important point is to never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact and always err on the side of caution; the consequences of an accident are far graver for the pedestrian than for the driver. The holidays are a hectic time of year. We all have places to be and things to think about. But they’re also meant to be a happy time; don’t let an accident or injury spoil that. Dams stood up to heavy storm To the Editor,

Re: Storm leaves thousands without power, Dec. 11. Unless I have missed a big news release, it appears that several things have been revealed during and after the recent near-record rainfalls. First, the Colliery dams seem to be intact. The wild ‘Chicken Little’ statements by both City of Nanaimo staff and the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school board have been proven to be what most intelligent people already knew –

pure hogwash. Secondly, there was the boil water advisory for Nanaimo’s water system. The city has known since the early 1990s that all surface water should be filtered. Just this month it was announced that the largest water system infrastructure project, which was to prevent any such boil water warnings being required, was indeed not going to be completed on time and will come in considerably over budget.

City must have arts and culture To the Editor,

Re: City should look after its poor and hungry before funding arts, Letters, Dec. 16. I have a quick reply to those who wish to have all the arts funding scuttled because they think it’s a waste of tax money. A city without art, music and culture, is a city without a life, a city without a breath of fresh air, and in my opinion a city not worth

living in. Life is hard enough as it is, and it is the arts in all its forms that allow the average person to escape the drudgery of life for a brief moment and find a measure of hope and joy, however fleeting that may be. The arts must always be supported. It is not a frivolous activity, but a very critical component of our daily lives.

We read in some form of media about bullying at school and corporate bullying, but do we ever notice when we are being bullied in our own home, workplace, business or even volunteer group? Likely not, because it’s a different kind of bullying: it’s prejudice. Some think their rights are more important to the point of causing great discomfort and injustice to others. We are all capable of abiding by the same peace-serving rules, except some individuals change the ones that don’t suit them because their way is the only way. Some will do the former, but that does not stop the bullying; it actually validates and perpetuates the bully way of life, as do the bully supporters you complain to that tell you to ‘put up or shut up.’ I learned the hard way how unhealthy the doormat demeanour is when it comes to personal and spiritual freedoms and although complaining can label one a troublemaker and confrontation can be sickeningly uncomfortable, I take those freedoms very seriously.

Re: Councillors call for report about conference centre, Dec. 16. What a relief it was to read that Mayor Bill McKay, supported by at least some councillors, is going to take a close, hard look at what our conference centre actually is, “a building twice as big as it needs to be or two or three times bigger than it should be.” Perhaps we could reuse this vast amount of wasted space by turning it

into the long-awaited hotel that once again a proposed developer has put on hold.

To the Editor,

Before we spend a couple more million on parkland, let’s take a look at the mess of ugly, distracting, no-class intersections covered with junky two-byfour signs, and have a look at the very welcoming entrance to Parksville. Nanaimo is literally built on coal.

Why don’t we build a scaled-down pithead scene with a short slope to the north of Georgia Park? Nanaimo history, and a good tourist stop. It is a lovely place to live, but we sure have had some bad leadership. Frank Ney was the leader who put us on the map. I wish the new mayor well. He sounds like a leader. Give up a coffee or two and fix up our city. Lower taxes won’t do it.

It’s back to the drawing board for a new sponsorship policy after city council raised concerns it would lead to a new staff position. Nanaimo city council is moving ahead with foundation work for a new sponsorship strategy with calls for city staff to develop naming rights and advertising policies, but rejected a draft document outlining how it can cash in on thirdparty partnerships. A new sponsorship policy, considered a step toward a corporate sponsorship program, was presented to council last week with principles for third-party deals and roles of city staff and council to approve new partnerships. The document also suggests a sponsorship coordinator. Coun. Diane Brennan said she supports directing city staff mem-

bers to put together policy and Coun. Ian Thorpe called it a starting point, but councillors Jim Kipp and Gord Fuller raised concerns about whether the document would lead to a new staff position. Although Suzanne Samborski, the city’s senior manager of culture and heritage, said there is no intent to have a new position, city manager Ted Swabey said the work won’t be done well if it’s off the side of a desk. “Unless we put full resources to it, we will never know the full potential,” he said, adding that city council can talk about what they want to do around the coordinator position once there’s a sponsorship strategy in place. Mayor Bill McKay, part of the committee that drafted the policy, said he’s fine with council not approving the document and that council was “absolutely correct” that as presented, the document would have implications on the size of the civil service. He asked Samborski to talk to other communities with full sponsorship groups to see how they are paid for. news@nanaimobulletin.com

A

local production company has successfully outdone some very tough competition on the international stage in what could be considered Nanaimo’s version of David and Goliath. Earlier this year, Cinnabar Vista Productions, a Nanaimobased company, took home three Remi Awards at the WorldFest-Houston International Film and Video Festival. In an effort to celebrate their achievements, Cinnabar Vista held its own award ceremony at the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce last Friday. The company’s short

films, Infinite Possibilities, Stz’uminus Land Code and Nanaimo Economic Development all received Remi Awards. “It was very exciting,” said Jeremiah Patton, who directed all three films. Infinite Possibilities won a Platinum Remi Award in the Advertising/Promotional category while Stz’uminus Land Code took home a Gold Remi Award in the Community Management category. Nanaimo Economic Development earned a silver in the Advertising/Promotional category. “It was kind of inspiring actually,” Patton said about winning the awards. Infinite Possibilities was able to beat out Myriad Global

Media, a British-based film company whose clients include Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil, Maersk Oil, Qatar Petroleum, Chevron, HSBC, Disney and Manchester United, in the promotional category. Patton said it was a great feeling to see Myriad Global Media proudly touting its gold Remi win, knowing he beat out Myriad with a much

smaller budget. “It was validating that this big company thought it was this really big deal and yet I was one step up from them with the platinum,” he said. Infinite Possibilities was commissioned by the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation and features over 100 different locations. Patton, who graduated from Vancouver Island Univeristy, credits the success of the film to the people of Nanaimo. “A lot of these shots are people shots. They are natural people shots,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without the public.” The WorldFest-Houston International Film and Video Festival, specifically for inde-

pendent filmmakers, has been running since 1961. Past Remi Award winners include Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, the Coen Brothers, Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola and Spike Lee. Cinnabar Vista is showing no signs of slowing down. The company recently released a short promotional video for First Nations Health Authority, a newly formed health authority that is the first of its kind in Canada. “They’re trying to staff these remote communities because it is a very hard thing to do,” Patton said. Pirates will be taking over the Harbour City this month. On Friday (Dec. 19) the Nanaimo Theatre Group will open its annual Christmas pantomime at Bailey Studio. This year’s pantomime, Pirates of the Panto, runs until the end of the month. The production

stars Rachel Scheibel, Tayelor Bourque, Doug Roszmann, Timothy vonBoetticher, Janna Logan, Kim Rogers, Shane Murphy and was directed by Nikita Towe, who is making her directing debut. Pirates of the Panto is loosely based on the popular Disney movie series Pirates of the Caribbean and centres around Zac Sparrow. “It’s about Sparrow and his family, who are off in search of buried tresure,” Towe said. “They are being followed by the

evil Captain Spongebag Roundpants.” Sparrow is played by Scheibel, 18, who has previously appeared in productions of Little Shop of Horrors, Legally Blonde: The Musical and Aladdin. “It is a very fun panto,” Scheibel said. “It’s fun for all ages. They get to interact with the characters, which is great because they feel like they have been involved.” Towe said the audience will enjoy Scheibel’s portrayal of Sparrow.

“I think people are going to love her. She is a very enthusiastic young girl who steps up and makes the most of everything that she is directed to do,” Towe said. Stay off the grass!

www.nanaimobulletin.com

How treading lightly can save your three ears Hanan Merrill, Nanaimo Hearing Clinic

That’s right, I said three ears. And no, I realize you’re not a freakishly endowed mutant that’s somehow eluded the probing grasp of medical science. Now if you’d just read on, I’ll show you why it’s so important to protect the grass in your ears. What?! You’ve seriously never heard of the grass in your ears? OK, it looks like I’ll have to begin a bit earlier than I’d intended . . . An introduction to ear grass Nestled within the warm fluid of your inner ear are thousands of microscopic hair cells that convert sound into electrical signals to be processed by your brain. We in the hearing industry refer to these cells as “grass” because it’s easier to say than “neural receptor cells” and because they’re actually similar to grass in a lot of ways. Think about the grass on your front lawn. If you walk on it gently, it’s going to be fine. Drive over it with your car once or twice and it should bounce back with no permanent damage. But if the “professional” roofers you hired on Craigslist drive their Cumminspowered diesel repeatedly over your lawn to access the oversized rubbish bin that they dumped unceremoniously in front of your living room window, your lawn will be no more. Like your lawn, the “grass” in your ears is designed to be walked on gently by soft- and mediumvolume sounds. It’s not designed to be trampled continually by loud noises. The louder the sound, the quicker the damage. Unlike your lawn, however, you can’t reseed the grass in your ears; any damage is permanent. As your ear grass sustains damage, you gradually lose the ability to hear light sounds, such as the soft consonants that make speech sound clear. So words art ounding ike his. This process is so gradual that you probably won’t even notice it’s happening. You’ll just become increasingly

annoyed by conversations, argue continually with your spouse and be frequently accused of not listening. Eventually you’ll avoid social settings, your relationship will crumble, a baby panda will die and the happy life you once enjoyed will become a bilefilled cesspool of animosity and contempt. But I digress . . . Back to the three ears Last week I was conducting hearing tests on location at an industrial mill site where workers are continuously exposed to harmful levels of noise. Testing these workers regularly keeps the folks at WorksafeBC happy, but the real reason I’m doing it is to protect each worker’s three ears. You’re familiar, of course, with the two ears that decorate the sides of your head. You’ve likely admired the satisfying curves of their cartilage and trusted that the rest of your hearing apparatus is tucked away neatly somewhere inside your head, protected by an unsettling quantity of earwax and the repeated admonitions of countless schoolteachers to “never stick anything in your ear that’s smaller than your elbow.” These are, indeed, the first two of your three ears. These ears, though, are merely sensors that detect sounds and send them along a grassy path to your brain, which (ta-da!) is actually your third ear. Some, in fact, would say it’s your one true ear. We’ve discussed how loud sounds can damage your “sensors.” Poorly functioning sensors deprive the brain of certain sounds, starting with those soft consonants. Ever heard the expression “Use it or lose it”? If your brain doesn’t receive the stimulation of certain sounds, it sees no need to maintain the ability to process them. And so the downward spiral of miscommunication is everexacerbated.

Hanan and Shelagh Merrill

How to protect your third ear once your grass is trampled I’ve seen an encouraging trend within industrial workplaces. While there was once a time when it wasn’t “cool” to wear hearing protection, today’s workers seem increasingly keen to protect their hearing. As a result, we’re seeing dramatic improvements in hearing among industrial workers. Protecting our first two ears may have improved, but protecting our third ear has a way to go – which is unfortunate since this is where true comprehension really occurs. Puzzling over crosswords and Sudoku can help keep your brain sharp, but if the grass in your ears has already been trampled by loud noises, there’s another way to help your brain preserve its ability to process the sounds it’s no longer receiving: hearing aids. Yes, hearing aids. It’s time we recognized them for what they truly are: hearing protection. Hearing aids ensure that our true ear – the brain – receives a full range of sounds and continues to flex its hearing and understanding “muscle.” Use it or lose it. Fortunately, societal attitudes toward hearing aids also seem to be improving. Many of today’s hearing aids are tiny, highly

sophisticated computers, many of which sit almost imperceptibly inside the ear. Many of today’s devices can also connect via Bluetooth to your TV, iPad and cell phone. They’ll probably even connect to your toaster in the nottoo-distant future. Stay connected Increasingly, the people coming through my door are saying things like, “I don’t want to be isolated like my parents are because they can’t hear well,” and, “If hearing aids will help me stay in tune with friends and family, then sign me up.” In short, they want to stay connected to their world for as long as possible. If you want to stay connected to your world, and keep your third ear functioning well into your prime, call me anytime to book a free hearing assessment. I can help you better understand your hearing “protection” options and guide you toward choices that make sense for you. No pushy sales tactics, and no pressure to do anything you’re not ready for. Promise. In the meantime, please don’t trample the grass. After all, you only have three ears.

More Murano sizzle for the money

I believe that this new product has even a larger market than just baby boomers.

’’

by Zack Spencer

When the original Nissan Murano was introduced in 2002, it was one of a number of car-based crossover vehicles that helped build the mid-size family SUV category. What that original model had was a unique take on design that made it stand out from the crowd. Here we are in 2015 and Nissan wants to recapture some of that original sizzle with this third generation Murano. With a bold, eye-popping design that looks like nothing on the road, this latest model has a sharper price, an upscale interior and refined ride that Nissan believes will appeal to the baby boomers this vehicle is targeted at. After spending a very full day driving around California’s Napa valley, I believe that this new product has an even larger possible market than just baby boomers. Looks Since the 2015 Nissan Murano is just about to hit dealership floors, the Napa region was the first in North America to get to see it. By the reaction from other drivers on the road, this mid-sized people mover gets a lot of attention. The bold front design now incorporates the headlamp treatment that will start to migrate across its other vehicles, like the new Maxima coming soon. The wedge shaped look is referred to as a boomerang and it is mimicked in the rear lights as well. The other design highlight is the roof, that looks like it is floating thanks to a blacked out rear windows and roof pillars. This design also features curvaceous rear hips, making the design modern and stylish. Inside The interior is a reason that many people will consider this product, not just affluent baby boomers. The design is simple but looks upmarket; the Murano might be an alternative to buying a Lexus RX350, for less money, or a young family wanting something more upscale than a compact SUV, for not much

more money. The dash and surrounding materials all looks first rate. The trim that looks like wood isn’t, rather a plastic that mimics wood but some might think it feels cheap but it certainly looks good. The base S-Trim isn’t base at all thanks to heated front seats, Bluetooth, navigation, backup camera and satellite radio. The next model up is the SV and it adds a power driver’s seat, huge moon roof, a power lift gate and heated steering wheel. There is also the all-wheel-drive SL that includes leather seats, Bose stereo and more or the top all-wheel-drive platinum that amps up the goodies to include heated rear seats, cooled front seats, 20-inch wheels and a host of safety features. Drive The 260-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine is a carry over from the last model but the body of the new Murano is 66kg lighter. This and a modified continuously variable transmission helps to improve fuel economy to 11.2L/100km in the city and 8.3L/100km on the highway, using the new, stricter fuel ratings for 2015. The tuning of the Murano is very relaxed, almost luxury-like. The steering is very easy to operate; some might find it too light. The pace at which the CVT works is very subdued, meaning the car wants to be in the low RPM range to help extract the best economy but when pushed it can take a while to wake the car up. To get around this there are now set shift points in the CVT that can be accessed through the transmission’s manual mode. It would be better to have a sport setting for the CVT but it isn’t offered. Verdict Overall the packaging of the 2015 Murano is very good. The interior has plenty of room for the front and rear passengers and the seats are comfortable. The cargo area is very big and the square shape of the hatch makes loading easier. This product should be attractive to buyers of compact SUVs that want more room and V6 power for just slightly more. Shoppers of premium brands who want a refined ride and interior for less money should consider the higher trim levels. This new Murano will certainly get attention for its exterior styling, but dig deeper there is more to this product than just an attractive look, there is value and comfort that is available to a wide range of potential buyers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Right gifts can take stress out of winter motoring Yes, winter weather has arrived early this year, but there are some clever new products available designed to make life with an auto less stressful and safer in sub-zero temperatures. Working with its suppliers, Canadian Tire has helped develop some new auto products that address winter driving problems. They’re as basic as scratch-proof snow and ice removal tool that’s easier on your car’s paintwork to a compact and light-weight emergency traction aid that could be a life-saver. The Garant EVA snow brush has a bristle-free brush with a foam head that’s less abrasive on vehicle paintwork. It addresses the negative feedback from customers about conventional snowbrushes and it’s sold in two sizes. Getting stuck in a friend’s snow-covered driveway can be embarrassing, getting stuck on the side of a lonely highway is far more serious. The Trac Grabber car traction aid is not a replacement for conventional chains, as it’s not intended for highway driving use. Easy to use and quick fitting, this traction aid is also far lighter and easier to store in a vehicle than tire chains. A truck version of the Trac Grabber Car Traction Aid is also available.

JIM HULL

July 15, 1948 - November 25, 2014 With profound sorrow, the family wishes to announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Jim Hull, at his home in Nanaimo, BC. Though he left us far too soon, his life exemplified the strong and principled man he was and the fine example he set for others. Â Jim spent his high school years at Paterson Collegiate in Windsor, Ontario, followed by 29 years of proud service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police throughout D Division ( Manitoba ). Â While in the RCMP, he served as the Head of Sector Sarajevo during the war in Bosnia. After his time with the RCMP, he was Director of the Manitoba Chief Medical Examiner's office in Winnipeg. Jim's unique skill set and urge to make a difference led to his being asked to undertake a number of international missions as both a police trainer and security expert in Kosovo with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, with the U.S. State Department in Jordan and finally with the United Nations in New York City. Jim will never be forgotten by his wife Elizabeth, Nanaimo, daughter Amy Strattner (Justin), Nanaimo, son Michael (Nicole), Maple Ridge, BC, his grandson Zachary Strattner and his faithful and loving dog Jasper. He is also survived by his mother Marion, Kanata, Ontario, very special big brother Bill (Nancy), Kanata Ontario, brothers-in-law Paul Mingay (Barb),Tecumseh, Ontario and Peter Mingay (Beth), Amherstburg, Ontario, and sisterin-law Carol Sansburn (Peter), Victoria, BC, ten nephews and one niece. According to Jim's wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Interment to follow at a later date in the Forest Walk at Cedar Memorial Gardens. Raynor Margaret (Norma) U.E. Feb 4, 1929 - Nov 19, 2014 Margaret Norma Raynor (nee Graham) passed away peacefully on November 19th in Astoria at Origins at Longwood. (Nanaimo) Norma was predeceased by her husband Harvey in 2005. She is survived by Kurt (Lianne) and their two sons, Graham (Kristina) and Alex; her daughter Tannis Nudd (Brian) and their two daughters (Kristy and Sarah) and great granddaughter (McKenna). There are many cousins and friends who will also miss Norma. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, compassion and love of family. She was “owned and loved by a succession of dogs who were her constant companions, especially Odin, a gentle Samoyed, who was the last. Her passions were her grandchildren, playing bridge, lawn bowling and genealogy. She was very proud to have proven ancestry of both of her parents to the United Empire Loyalists. We respectfully request that in lieu of flowers that any donations be made to the local SPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the two young gentlemen who changed my flat tire on the parkway. I no sooner puller away when I heard a strange clunking noise – we had not wound up the cable that holds the spare tire under the car. As I struggled to wind this cord, another gentleman and his wife offered their help. BEEF To my neighbour. There was nothing on his to-do list and he still only finished half of it. BOUQUET To the wonderful men who are the Knights of Columbus for donating your food and your time to Park Avenue Elementary School for the Santa breakfast. We truly appreciate all your hard work and Christmas spirit. BEEF To the Christmas card selection at the store. I appreciate my newspaper carrier and all, but I didn’t necessarily want to send him “more Christmas love than words could ever express.” BOUQUET To Riley at Newcastle Nissan for going to so much trouble checking our front tire for leaks in the pouring rain. BEEF To the cranky post lady who butt in and wouldn’t let the clerk sell me stamps for my kid’s Christmas parcel, insisting I buy machine label ones. Merry Christmas to the north-end clerk who put real stamps on his parcel. BOUQUET To the shuttle drivers at Nanaimo Toyota for going out of their way to pick up a damsel in distress. Also a big thanks to the team that got my Yaris back on the road so quickly. BEEF To Victoria’s new mayor for refusing to swear allegiance to our Queen and her great granny, Queen Victoria who was the one who named our proud city. Shame on her for trying to change our traditions. BOUQUET To Tara Fedosoff and Nanaimo Aquatic Centre staff for trying to improve recycling at the facility.

BEEF To the person who stole an old car battery off one of my tie-down legs of my tarp-covered car storage. Removing that one battery, for a lousy $5 or so, destroyed my frame. The wind blew it over my car, scratching the paint job as it went. BOUQUET To the Beefs and Bouquets section and its power. I got to personally witness barefoot guy at the gym get busted by staff. BEEF To the citizens of Nanaimo who have yet to figure out that the old Island Highway is 80 km/h and not 50 km/h. It’s not a residential street, it’s a highway. BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Ice Centre for keeping a bookshelf in the lounge. I was able to read Babar The King during intermission of a hockey game. In a related beef, Babar The King isn’t as good as I remember from my childhood. BEEF to the restaurant. Went there with a group of six and not only were the servers inexperienced and slow, we had to wait 45 minutes for our mediocre food.

BEEF To all the people who think it’s OK to go out to a restaurant when you or your child are sick. It’s very inconsiderate to the servers in the restaurant who don’t have a choice but to serve you. There is such thing as takeout if you are too sick to cook. BOUQUET To the Five Fundraising Friends. Another example of the generosity of Nanaimo people – especially at Christmas time. BEEF To the lady in the white and pink SUV who can’t seem to slow down for any school zone. BOUQUET To my mail person for putting my newspaper through the mail slot. A small act of kindness that is greatly appreciated. We sure won’t get this personal service from a community mailbox.

BOUQUET To the kind gentleman (Mark?) at Life Labs for letting me and my daughter and another man ahead of him in line.

BOUQUET To the best yoga instructor Lesley at Koi Yoga. You got me started and now look at me touch my toes. Thank you for everything – especially the energy at your classes.

BEEF To the store’s delivery system. The driver tried three times, but could have left something to say he would be returning and the item could be picked up at the warehouse or store instead of being sent back. BOUQUET To the raddest boyfriend ever. You do things every day to make me feel wanted and happy. You are truly awesome. Happy one-year anniversary. BEEF To the grocery store that advertises in very large print, “turkey grade A, 98 cents per pound.” Then in small print – so small it looks like a pencil line – “minimum order $50 with turkey.” You really need a microscope to read the last part. BOUQUET To Hazel and Karen Smith. You both work so hard and put in so many hours at Paradise Isle Seniors Society.

BOUQUET To Country Grocer at Southgate for your generous heart and the sunshine you bring to all of us seniors. From Hazel and all the members of Paradise Isle Seniors Society. BOUQUET To Ralph at Mid Island Towing. Thank you for handling a difficult situation with the greatest amount of care possible. BOUQUET To the owner of Cinnamon Joes for his generosity and delicious food. You are a great addition to our downtown. BOUQUET To everyone who tries to keep a smile, or at least fake one, as they brave the mall corridors this month. We don’t have to let the stresses and pressures of the season dampen our good spirits.

High hopes for high school hoops Tipoff 2014-15 special issue: Basketball season gets going

Other key returnees include forward Garrett Goodall and guard Cole McGarvey. Jacob Thom is the team’s head coach. Olsen said the offence is coming along slowly, but with so many offensively talented players on the court, “once we get it it’s going to be really nice.” There is work to do defensively, too, he said, particularly with rebounding. These things will come, the assistant coach said. “We’re looking more long-term…” he said. “And I think when that time comes around, we’ll be ready and very good.” GAME ON … The Islanders play the Alberni Armada today (Dec. 18) at 2 p.m. at the NDSS gymnasium.

H

igh school basketball season has a certain sound to it. At this time of year, the gymnasiums are just starting to echo with the squeak of hightops on the hardcourt and the rhythm of few bouncing basketballs. By season’s end, if all goes well, those echos will become raucous

reverberations as players thunder up and down the court, rock the rim, beat the buzzer, raise the roof. Nanaimo’s high school hoops fans can look forward to all the sounds – and sights – of a new season as teams tip off this month. Here’s a look at the 11 local high school basketball teams:

NDSS ISLANDERS GIRLS

NDSS ISLANDERS BOYS The Nanaimo District Islanders entered the fall with the highest provincial ranking of any local team, eighth in senior AAA. “I don’t know if there’s higher expectations. It might be we’re noticed a little more by people on the mainland,” said Tyus Barfoot, the Islanders’ star player. There are expectations, said assistant coach Tyler Olsen, “but we’re not too worried about it. All that matters is what happens in March, [and] first we’ve got to make it there.” The Islanders understand there will be a process toward playing to their potential. Even though the senior AAA league doesn’t tip off until the new year, the Islanders have been busy with exhibition games and have challenged themselves against tough competition. “These guys definitely want to get better. The guys that are here right now all love basketball, I think,” Olsen said. “They’re slowly starting to work harder and harder and learning what it is to have a good work ethic.” Barfoot said the Islanders have been having good practices and have been working hard and thinks it will start to pay off in games. To win, he said, “we’re going to have to roll together and we’re going to have to play really well as a team.” The Islanders feature three Basketball B.C. high-performance program players, including Barfoot, centre Callum Gemma, and Max Reed, who transferred to ND from Dover Bay.

The Nanaimo District Islanders senior AA girls have enough talent to win games this year, they just need to put it all together. Coach Taylor Hendricks, new in town after moving from Alberta, likes the group of players she’ll be working with at NDSS. “They have a really awesome skill base, they just need to work as a team,” she said. Provincial team player Natasha Jensen, fellow forward Tkia King and point guard Rachel Baird are the three captains and primary scorers. “They are definitely going to be our base for the whole team. They really pick the team up,” Hendricks said. Megan Doumont is another reliable player who can play minutes at any THE NEWS BULLETIN position. DOVER BAY DOLPHINS GIRLS

WOODLANDS EAGLES BOYS

The Dover Bay Dolphins, with a roster full of fresh faces, will experiment with their court chemistry. This year’s senior AAA girls’ team has 11 Grade 11s and two Grade 12s, making for an interesting mix. “For not really playing together as a team, as a core five, I think they have the foundation,” said Lisa Salewski, Dover’s coach. “It’s just how hard they work to continue to build on that.” Post player Mikayla Herring will be a top scorer for the Dolphins, along with swing player Danielle Frinton, another returnee. Forward Rose Plensky plays hard and she and Nyree McGonigle will be two other scorers. Salewski said the Dolphins girls have a lot of work to do offensively and need to learn to play together defensively and it all starts “with the intensity that they bring to the court.” She said the players are coachable and give 100 per cent of what is asked from them, so she expects them to find their form as the season goes along. “It’ll be interesting to see what they’re like at their last game,” the coach said. GAME ON … Dover’s next home game isn’t until Jan. 8, when they host the Alberni Armada in a 5 p.m. tipoff.

The Woodlands Eagles may be underdogs, but they don’t want to think that way. “That’s what we’ve been trying to teach these guys, is always have high expectations,” said Franjo Crnkovic, coach of the senior AA boys’ team. “Because we don’t have a Wildcat or we don’t have a Dover logo on us, we still deserve credit in this town.” The coach said his players are committed, but he wants the veterans to take more responsibility. “The kids, they’re hardworking,” Crnkovic said. “If they commit to everything that we do, like ThE NEwS BullETIN every team, Jordan Cox of the Woodlands we’ll be OK.” Forward Zack Eagles, left, gets past Joseph Almoete of the Wellington Mackay can Wildcats in tournament play. score in the post or from outside, and swingman Griffin Douglas and point guard Jordan Cox will be two other key players at both ends of the court. Another Grade 12, Hunter Gackstatter, is team captain. The league will be as competitive as ever this year, but the Eagles, who beat provincially ranked Barsby on Tuesday, want to rise above underdog status. “It’s going to be a battle,” the coach said. “Every game’s going to count.” GAME ON … The Eagles visit the Ladysmith 49ers tonight (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m.

DOVER BAY DOLPHINS BOYS The Dover Bay Dolphins have the player personnel to again be a basketball powerhouse, but they think they need to change up some things on the court. Carson Williams, the team’s coach, said he’s asking his senior AAAA boys to play an allnew style in the 2014-15 season. “I wanted to push the tempo a little bit,” Williams said. “I think we’ve got a bench that I can rotate a bit, so I wanted to change the tempo of our style so we can go a little quicker.” It affects the game plan at both ends of the court. Not only will the team try to run and gun offensively, but it will also try to play the sort of defence that might lead to fast breaks. “We have some sets we’re trying to run, but I want my guys to play loose on offence … to attack, basically,” said the coach. “And then defensively, just play an aggressive style that turns the tempo up a little bit.” The Dolphins will be led this year by Grade 12 forward Christian Wigmore, who can score from anywhere. Quinn Mirau and Jordan Gladstone are provincial team players in the backcourt and Gary Gladstone, another guard, can also push the ball and score. Forwards Jeff Webb and Fraser Schmidt are other key contributors. ThE NEwS BullETIN “The effort’s been really good Jeff Webb goes to the rim and the focus during a game against a Gulf has been really Islands Scorpions opponent good,” Williams Saturday at the Dover Bay gym. said. “The guys are learning a lot and they’re working really hard and it’s starting to come together. We just have to build on what we’ve got going.” GAME ON … Dover begins league play in the new year and the team’s home opener isn’t until Jan. 20, when the Dolphins take on the Alberni Armada at 7 p.m. at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym.

WELLINGTON WILDCATS BOYS

GREG SAKAKI/ThE NEwS BullETIN

Wellington Wildcats player Hayden Jeffries, middle, gets between Woodlands Eagles opponents Zack Mackay and Griffin Douglas during a game Saturday at the Dover Bay gym.

The Wellington Wildcats senior AAA boys have an early leg up in high school hoops this season. The ’Cats earned some local bragging rights by beating the Dover Bay Dolphins and Woodlands Eagles on back-to-back days this past weekend. What’s more, Wellington – with only Grade 10s and 11s on the roster – is only bound to get better. “We’re really young, but we’ve got some pretty skilled guys and they’re a good group of kids, so it’s been fun to work with them so far,” said Luke Letham, who takes over as head coach. Post players Anton Kamke and Daniel Goodman will have a lot of points and rebounds this season, and point guard Hayden Jeffries is another strong two-way player. “We don’t have one guy that’s going to go score a bunch of points, so basically it’s just working on the defensive end and turning that into points…” Letham said. “We’re going to have to rely on our defence and stopping teams.” League play doesn’t start until the new year, but the Wildcats have been active in exhibition. With two tournament wins in a row now, the ’Cats will bring momentum into a busy new year. “We’ve set goals and we want to be playing for an Island championship,” Letham said. “I think we can accomplish that, with what I’ve seen so far.” GAME ON … The Wellington Wildcats’ first regular-season game is Jan. 6, when the NDSS Islanders visit the Wellington Secondary School gym for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Ladysmith 49ers guard Nick Hayton goes up for a layup during a game against Kwalikum on Friday at Courtenay’s Mark Isfeld Secondary.

LADYSMITH 49ERS BOYS Randy Steel has coached Ladysmith 49ers basketball for a long time, but this year he’s seeing something completely new. “It’s hard to bring two teams together. It’s actually really hard to do,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve ever tried this.” Two-thirds of the roster this year are players who used to attend Cedar Community Secondary School. “They had a system last year that they were running, and then we’re trying to run our system that we run at Ladysmith,” he said. “So it’s actually been a bit of a challenge, but the kids have been really good.” Point guard Nick Hayton is the go-to guy and forward Kurt Olson and centre Raury Lancaster will be other impact players. With a roster of all Grade 12s, a long-term build doesn’t make sense, Steel said. So the 49ers will keep things simple and rely on their basketball fundamentals, skills and smarts. “It’ll be tough. We’ll have to come a long way,” Steel said. GAME ON … The Ladysmith 49ers host the Woodlands Eagles in senior AA league play tonight (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. at the Ladysmith Secondary School gym.

WELLINGTON WILDCATS GIRLS

LADYSMITH 49ERS GIRLS

The Wellington Wildcats, consistent contenders, will need to work for every win they get. Wellington Secondary School’s senior AA girls’ basketball team has a very different roster this year that will try to keep up Welly’s winning ways. Eight newcomers join four veterans. “We have the leadership from the four returning players and the new girls, they come in from a good [junior] program,” said Bill Fraser, co-coach of the Wildcats. Provincial team player Olivia Mjaaland is Welly’s primary scorer and Shaneeka Swift, Shania Sabbas and Amber John are other key contributors. “Like every year here, we don’t rely on one person ever,” said Fraser. “So it’s trying to distribute the responsibilities and the pressure equally amongst them, so then we’re not that team you could just shut down one player and we’re done.” Wellington is known as a basketball school and the Wildcats senior girls were the first team to hit the court this fall to practise. Their head start will help them in an improved league. “I’d expect it to be close right to the end, very competitive,” Fraser said. “It’ll basically boil down to who’s clicking and who doesn’t have injuries.” GAME ON … The Wildcats girls host the Barsby Blazers in league play Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Wellington Secondary School gym.

A new group of girls has helped bring basketball back at Ladysmith Secondary School. There was no senior girls’ team at the school last season, but thanks to a roster of mostly Cedar teens, the program has been revived. Daryl Rodgers, an LSS alumnus, is coach of the 49ers girls. “I know it’s kind of died away in the last couple of years, but maybe we can revitalize the basketball program here again and make it like it used to be,” he said. There is a junior girls’ program at the school, which bodes well for the future, but the present will be challenging. Since there was no team last year, some players on the senior team have little to no experience playing basketball. The team will rely on Marika Grubac and Shelby Dorman-Banks at both ends of the court, as well as Kelsey Hutt, who works hard and hustles on defence. Darby Rae is another Grade 12 who will contribute. “At the start of the season everybody expects to be rusty,” Rodgers said. “It’s where you can get to by the end of the year.” GAME ON … The 49ers visit the NDSS Islanders Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Nanaimo District Secondary School gym.

Much more basketball still to come

BARSBY BLAZERS BOYS Some of John Barsby Secondary School’s senior athletes will try to keep winning as they transition from the football field to the basketball court. “A lot of these guys, they’re running off a big high from winning the B.C. football championships. They’ve just got to work hard and concentrate on basketball,” said Colin Boyce, one of the team’s coaches. Football season delayed basketball season a bit, so the Blazers are in catch-up mode. “It’s a little bit stressful, a lot of things to work on, but we’re doing it, day by day,” Boyce said. “We’re just getting everybody on the same page and getting to know each other, to play together.” Barsby goes into basketball season provincially ranked in senior AA. They will be led offensively by guard Chris DeGoutiere, with forward North Rainey playing a physical two-way game and guard Michael Wyse providing pure shooting from outside. Cedric Mack, Brian Peck and Max Cummings, who comes over from Cedar Community Secondary School, will also contribute. “Everyone has a job to do and with the new players, they’ve just got to find where they belong,” Boyce said. GAME ON … The Blazers host the Kwalikum Kondors tonight (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. at the John Barsby Secondary School gym.

AVA This litter of 5 puppies was born into a very loving and caring foster home where they have been handled and socialized since day one. Even with all the work that the foster family is putting in these puppies seem to be naturally extremely shy and very fearful. We are looking for very specific homes for these little guys. They will need to go to people who are willing and able to put a lot of time and energy into training and socializing. These puppies will all do best in homes with other dogs who are confident and well socialized. We will be working to carefully match these little guys with their forever home. Jeanette came to the Nanaimo SPCA with her litter of kitens. Cats come in all shapes and sizes, but these little ones have a little bit extra to them. They are Polydactyl!! Which means they have extra toes! Here is some fun facts about Polydactyl cats: 5. Polydactyl cats were once considered good luck at sea Back in the day, polydactyl cats got their sea legs by accompanying fiNom shermen / Name Dateon many journeys. And Date they earned their keep -- they were rumored to be excellent mouse hunters, and their extra toes gave them better balance on ships that encountered rough waters. The cats’ many travels might explain their widespread presence today, predominantly in the United States, Canada, England, and Wales.

Clippers want to bring good cheer into holiday break The Nanaimo Clippers hope to hand the Cowichan Valley Capitals a couple of lumps of coal this week. Nanaimo’s B.C. Hockey League team closes out

2014 with games against Cowichan on Friday (Dec. 19) at Frank Crane Arena and then at Duncan’s Island Savings Centre the next night. “Our game’s in a really

good spot right now,” said Blake Clement, Clippers assistant coach. “We were short a few guys [last week] and the guys competed really hard and some guys stepped up

for us. It was a good message sent to us from our team that we can win, it doesn’t matter who’s in the lineup.” The coming Christmas break can be a distrac-

tion, but Clippers coaches will try to keep their guys focused and sharp against a capable opponent. “They’re a pretty good team, they work hard also and they’ve obviously

beat us before so we have to play a really good game here,” Clement said. GAME ON … The Clips and Caps face off Friday at 7 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
