Helping out Hilton

Community rallies to help centre that helps Alberni Valley’s children KATYA SLEPIAN broken furnace would have left the Kiwanis Hilton Children’s Centre out in the cold were it not for the generosity of Port Albernians.

The approximately 60-year-old building’s furnace broke down at the beginning of December.

“One of the original parts to the furnace has broken down,” said Susan Fox, executive director for the Port Alberni Association for Children with Developmental Disabilities.

The centre investigated all of their options both locally and out of town and reached the conclusion that there were no ready made parts available, forcing them to have the part custom made.

“The air-handler is $15,000. It’s the whole heart of the system, it makes the air move into the building, fresh air as well as warm air. That’s what gets the building warm.”

While the centre usually tries to apply for grants and organize fundraisers when they need more money, the urgent nature of the repairs needed meant that they had to rely on the community’s generosity to get the money for the down payment that they’ve been able to put down.

“Everybody’s got together, there’s been several organizations that have already stepped up.”

At $2000, one of the biggest donations has come from CUPE Local 118.

“It’s really tipped the scales for us,” said Fox. CUPE 118 has also issued a challenge to all the other unions in the city to donate to the Hilton Children’s Centre, said CUPE Local 118 president Stacy Watton.

“It’s been really heartwarming,” said Fox. Dolan’s Gas Fitting and Concrete has also stepped up, cutting the cost of the replacement part by $5000 and donating a day and a half of labour.

“Right now it’s warm in here only because they spent a weekend looking for old fans that they could hook up,” said Fox. That effort by Dolan’s will buy the centre’s heating system enough time for the replacement part to arrive.

As the only child development centre for the Alberni Valley, families all across the region rely on programs provided there.

“We even have grandparents now who may have received a service here bringing their own grandchildren,” said Fox of the 32-year-old program.

From childcare to education to therapies of all kinds, the centre is a hub for children’s services in the city.

“These services touch every part of the community,” said Fox. “There’s childcare, education, fitness classes, city early childhood education classes, a preschool.

Then all the special needs therapies for kids are in the centre. If you ever knew of anybody who ever had speech therapy, physiotherapy or occupational therapy, they had it at the Hilton Children’s Centre.”

Cottonwood Farm on Ferguson Road was one of the worst properties affected by the storms and flooding in the Alberni Valley.

“The water was up to my neck,” said farm owner Jen Carter.

The flood water devastated the sheep farm, strewing firewood, hay, length of fence and other debris all over the grounds and into the property’s ponds.

“I had eight cords of firewood and it’s just everywhere,” Carter said. “I have to rebuild all the fences so I have to get the firewood picked up.”

Fortunately, she doesn’t have to do it alone.

Once the severity of the storm became clear, a group of Port Alberni residents came together to help out those worst affected.

Linda Fischer runs the Facebook group “Port Alberni Volunteer Aid and Info,” who coordinated their first cleanup effort at Carter’s farm on Sunday, Dec. 14.

“The site started because of the floods to try and gather volunteers,” she said, adding that the site

so that the farm’s pregnant sheep will have a place to give birth later this winter.

So far, the group has helped out Carter and members of the Tseshaht First Nation.

“We gave over $300 worth of food to Tseshaht for the volunteers and sent volunteers up there,” Fischer said, adding that while no one else has contacted the group yet, they’re eager for both more cleanup projects and volunteers.

“Anybody who has time to volunteer.”

“Overwhelming” support for flood victims An overwhelming disaster has led to an overwhelming show of support for the Tseshaht, who had homes flooded and people evacuated during the storm series last week.

“The people of Port Alberni responded amazingly,” said chief councillor Hugh Braker. “Many of the sandbaggers were people from Port Alberni, friends, relatives, just strangers who showed up to sandbag...

It was really quite overwhelming how generous people were with their time and their funds to help us out. We’re incredibly grateful for the effort.”

According to Braker, 22 homes were affected by the flooding, with 18 of those homes advised to evacuate.

“As an absolutely direct result of the sandbagging, 12 homes were saved from what would have been catastrophic damage,” said Braker, adding that 10,000 sandbags were used in the effort.

The sandbags and the sand were donated by the city and the regional district who were “amazing in very quickly getting us sandbags and sand.”

Approximately 200 volunteers showed up to the Tseshaht administration building to fill the sandbags, with some bringing their own trucks and shovels.

Two homes were also damaged prior to the flooding by the wind storm.

“Those homes had power lines pulled right out of the house

by fallen trees.”

Homes weren’t the only thing to suffer from the storm.

Hector Road and parts of the Pacific Rim Highway were damaged by the flooding and will need repairs.

A vital new piece of Tseshaht infrastructure was also damaged by the storm.

“Tseshaht has damage to the new sewer line that we were constructing... we have some damage to the park at Paper Mill Dam.” All roads have

replace Larry Ransom as chair.

Craig returned to the school board in 2011 after a nine-year absence. Ransom was first elected to the school board in a by-election in 1997 and is currently serving in his sixth full term as a trustee.

The Salvation Army Christmas kettle campaign is less than a week from completion and as of Dec. 15 only 41 per cent of their total goal has been raised.

The Salvation Army’s goal for the Christmas season is $65,000 and despite group like the Kiwanis Club matching $3,000 in donations, they’ve only been able to raise $26,421.99, Major Bruce Mac Kenzie said.

While donations tend to increase right up to Dec. 23, Mac Kenzie said that “my gut feeling is that we’re a little behind last year.”

Contributing to the problem is the lack of volunteers willing to man the kettles.

“We have a lot of empty spaces,” said Christmas kettle

Don’t undervalue heritage Both the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society and the Ross Bay Villa Society are taking on major fundraising campaigns to save more of the city’s heritage, albeit for different reasons.

The Ross Bay Villa Society aims to purchase the Ross Bay Villa from the financially-strapped TLC. The society must raise $130,000 to pay off the mortgage.

Across town, the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society to free up space in B.C.’s history wants the four-storey, 30-room is still castle by removing the gift shop and staff offices to relatively make room for more storyyoung... telling opportunities and museum-based activities.

The gift shop is currently located where the original kitchen was and planners want to restore the kitchen to a Romanesqueera style to match the rest of the castle.

The gift shop will be relocated in another building on the property.

Both projects are worthy of our support for the heritage value alone, never mind adding in the tourism driver they will create.

It’s encouraging that these projects are being pushed by societies who have an invested interest. They should be an inspiration to other groups to push forward their projects, instead of waiting for government to make the first move.

B.C.’s history is still relatively young, but we can’t pass up on opportunities to enhance it and help it grow.

The one thing we must always keep in mind when looking at our history is that we only have so many opportunities to get it right.

As Simone Vogel-Horridge, president of the Ross Bay Villa, said: “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Mailbag: Feedback on dam, McLean Mill City should shut down McLean Mill To the Editor,

The City of Port Alberni alone has poured well over $8,000,000 into the McLean Mill and the steam train operations so far. Why on earth do we need a McLean Advisory Committee? The mill should be shut down.

Parks Canada requires only that the mill be left open for visitors to stroll through. And, of course, the caretaker position would be retained.

The city budget doesn’t tell us how much the mill itself is losing annually and how much the steam train costs us.

If the city closed the mill and wished to operate the train, the losses should be split equally between the city and the regional district (to which the city contributes money anyway).

The most cost effective and responsible actions for the good of city taxpayers are to shut down the mill and stop the steam train operation.

We don’t need a

committee to explain the obvious.

Scrap mill funding, says this writer To the Editor,

After all the citizen action and letters, with a good turnout at the polls, to throw out the old and in with a new forward out of the box thinking council, they kick it all back in the taxpayer’s face.

A committee group to study McLean’s Mill, well at least it’s not money squandered on a consultant’s report. But the message was clear: the taxpayers voted to stop shovelling hard earned cash into the money sucking pit known as McLean Mill.

What has it been, $8 to $10 million, just evaporated into the forest? It hasn’t even slowed down the tourists

racing through town on their way to Tofino and Ucluelet.

That money would have paid for the elusive 10th Avenue bridge and maintenance work so Third Avenue wouldn’t have flooded, for signs and more advertisements telling the world Port Alberni is here; the new swimming pool everyone talks about and more.

Imagine the multitude of improvement and benefits to the city as a whole that could have happened with that money.

I hope council wastes no more time, effort or money on a failed adventure.

Respect the taxpayers’ vote: scrap the mill funding immediately.

Third Avenue area and we hear after each one that the city engineer is developing plans and then looking for funding for his plans. The plan is to dig a ditch straight to the inlet from behind Smitty’s to drain Dry Creek quicker and thereby prevent flooding.

On every one of the floods there have been the same four things happen: 1) Severe winds from the south; 2) heavy rains; 3) very high tides; resulting in 4) thousands of dollars damage caused by street flooding.

Cutting a new channel to the inlet will only create a faster way of getting the flood waters to lower Third Avenue.

In the four-point scenario above we have no control over any of the events but we can control the water flow down Dry Creek by building a coffer dam behind the horseshoe park and having an electronically controlled dam gate that could be closed when necessary.

If council thinks I’m all wet then before they ask any questions of staff why not pose the theory I’ve presented to an out-of-town engineering firm and have them vet it?

After years of not doing anything concrete I would be willing to believe that councils past have left the present council in a tenuous position.

Tom Fletcher: The B.C. Liberal government has given every indication they’re going to proceed with the Site C dam on the Peace River. What do you think?

John Horgan: I’ve always maintained that it’s a good project, but it’s a question of when to add another $8-9-10-12 billion onto the backs of ratepayers.

First of all, go to the B.C. Utilities Commission and find out if this is the power you need and if this is the time to build it. The government refuses to do that, and I think that’s just an Achilles heel in this process.

Fletcher: You voted for the liquefied natural gas income tax to provide certainty, and then you immediately said you would work to increase the LNG

– John Horgan tax in 2017, before any major project could be started. How is that certainty?

Horgan: I thought it was important that the investment community in this sector knew there was bipartisan support for LNG in British

Columbia. But we went from a seven per cent [tax] to a 3.5 per cent because of a softening market.

If there is a decline in return to the province because of a softening market, then surely over a 25-year period – not just between now and 2017, but if the market conditions change and prices go up – I think British Columbians would want their government to make sure they were getting a fair share of that benefit.

Fletcher: Why did you vote against the LNG environmental legislation?

Horgan: They said prior to the election that LNG would be the greenest in the world.

And then when they tabled legislation they left out 70 per cent of

the emissions from upstream activity.

Fletcher: Gordon Campbell’s great goal for greenhouse gases, 33 per cent reduction by 2020, can that be reached assuming a substantial LNG development?

Horgan: I find it difficult to believe that they’re going to achieve those results. [Environment Minister] Mary Polak has a different point of view, and our job as opposition is to hold them accountable to the numbers that they passed into law, and we’re going to do that.

One of the three sectors, housing, energy and transportation, where emission profiles can be managed downward is transportation. And the government has wasted 18 months talking about a referendum on [Metro Vancouver transit.]

Fletcher: What’s your top priority for 2015?

Horgan: I think the public is going to increasingly find affordability issues to be the challenge.

We didn’t spend as much time as I had hoped to on hydro rate increases, ICBC. When the government balanced the budget, they did

it by selling assets, and by increasing costs at their Crown corporations and then pulling that revenue in for budget purposes.

We’re going to have to use new technologies and means of communication to better explain to people what the government’s doing to them.

Fletcher: What should happen with the agricultural land reserve?

Horgan: I don’t think there was a groundswell of opposition to the ALR, quite the opposite in fact, and the commission has in my opinion, infinite flexibility to meet the demands of development in northern areas as well as urban centres.

I’m going to make sure that [agriculture critic] Lana Popham, who as you know is fearless on this issue, is let loose on [Agriculture Minister] Norm Letnick, and we’re going to dog this issue up to the next election.

There is a cosy corner in The Brick where people can cuddle up to the store’s newest mascot while helping children who have to spend time at BC Children’s Hospital.

The Brick has been selling miniature cuddly versions of Brickley, the store’s mascot, since the beginning of November.

Brickley costs $19.95 and all proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network, on behalf of the BC Children’s Hospital.

People are able to make other miscellaneous donations as well, Hamilton said.

The Port Alberni store would like to collect at least $1,500; The Brick nationally will match all funds raised to a total of $100,000.

Raising funds to help others is in the chain’s culture, says Hamilton.

“We’ve chosen two major charitable organizations: one is Breakfast for Learning

and the other is Children’s Miracle Network. They’re both helping kids in need.”

The Brick in Port Alberni has raised funds for Breakfast for Learning in the past, but this is the first year with the Children’s Miracle Network, Hamilton said. “For Breakfast for Learning we’ve raised about $1,500.”

Brickley Bears will be available at the store on upper johnston Road until February.

The Brick owner Garth Hamilton is ready to part with Brickley the Bear to raise money for BC Children’s Hospital.

With the high school basketball season starting, the Alberni District Secondary School senior boys and girls basketball teams got together to show off what they had in store.

Senior boys coach Neelam Parmar said he feels good about the upcoming season.

“In terms of what we can do on the court, I think we can compete with most teams on the Island and give them a run for their money.”

However, Parmar admitted that with smaller players this season, it’ll be more of a challenge.

“We’re a little bit smaller this year so we have to make a few adjustments for that,” he said.

“We are faster so if we can we’ll use our speed but it has to be a controlled speed.”

Controlled speed and traditional manto-man defense allowed the boys to win the Parkland Panthers Tournament in Sidney on Dec. 5-6.

“I used a more traditional approach and that’s how we were able to win that tournament,” said Parmar. “I think we’re going to have to stick with the meat and potatoes, play man defense and play hard.”

Looking ahead at the 2014/15 season, senior boys team captain Kevin Titian Jr., 17, said he felt “pretty good, looking at the team right now.”

The girls also did well at a tournament the same weekend.

worked really hard as a team, especially for our first tournament,” said senior girls team captain Makenna Harding, 17.

“I think it’s going to be a really good season, we have a lot of good girls and a really good team.”

Senior girls coach Al Seredick agrees.

“We had a disappointing first game but we won the two after that because we executed a bit better.”

Looking at his team, Seredick is confident about the season to

come.

“We’re pretty balanced this year.

I’ve got a couple of really good guards and I’ve got some bigger players...so we can compete on the inside a bit more.”

While Seredick hasn’t seen all that the North Island League has to offer, what he has seen leaves him feeling positive.

“We can definitely compete with all of them and I’m hoping we’re going to have a good finish in our league.”

Kings face off in mini-series ADSS’ Dagenais wins gold Bulldogs, BCHL: | Shoulder surgery will end Evan Tironese’s final BCHL season.

Neill Middle School took top honors winning the team title for Grades 7 – 9 wrestlers. The Neill Talons were led by the gold medal performances of Seth Price (38kg) and Owen Spencer (45kg).

Despite only having a handful of wrestlers eligible to compete in the Junior Division, ADSS boys managed a second place finish.

Isaac McDonald (51kg) and Daniel Spencer (63kg) looked strong in route to winning gold medals.

Grade 9 wrestler Aaron Badovinac was at the tournament refereeing but is unable to compete for a month as a result of a hand injury.

Rounding out the team placings in the Junior Boys Division was the Seahawks from EJ Dunn. EJ Dunn boys had seven male wrestlers place.

William Merry (1st at 100kg), Jarod Gagnon (2nd at 70kg), Jayden

Iverson (2nd at 63kg), Noah Stampeen (3rd at 54kg), Prateesh Giri (3rd at 63kg), and Anthony Canute (4th at 54kg) are all part of a large and strong middle school team at EJ Dunn.

On the girl’s side of the tournament, Alberni only saw a small group of their wrestlers compete.

ADSS finished fourth in the girls division.

All four female wrestlers for ADSS placed. Morgan Dagenais won the gold at 55 kilograms, Michel Kurucz was second at 63 kilograms, Summer Wass was third at 55 kilograms, and Emma McGowan was fourth at 63 kilograms.

“It was great to see Morgan have a good tournament as she has been one of the most dedicated females this year,” McDonald said.

EJ Dunn had five girls compete in the Junior Girls Division.

moved up an age group and won a gold medal at 64 kilograms.

Kylea Anderson (73kg) and Kyla McAuley (90kg) also went undefeated to finish first. Ally Flaro and Mackenzie Boudreau finished third and fifth respectively in a very tough 51 kilogram girls weight class.

The tournament also featured an elementary division for those up and coming wrestlers in Grade 3 to 6. Seven wrestlers placed in the youngest division: Landyn Clayton (Dunn Gold), Bobby McKenzie (Dunn Gold), Mason Bodnar (Neill Silver), Manbir Narang (Dunn Bronze), Joe Bysmla (Neill Bronze), Illonia Berg (Dunn Bronze), and Alex McKenzie (AES Bronze).

Alberni wrestlers will be training hard in preparation for the War on the Floor Tournament this week in Vancouver.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are hoping for a Christmas present from Powell River Kings, who they face tonight (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. at Weyerhaeuser Arena at the AV Multiplex.

The Bulldogs are sitting mid-pack in the B.C. Hockey League’s Island Division, two points behind the Kings; they face the Kings twice at home (tonight and Dec. 27) and once in Powell River (Dec. 31, 5 p.m) in a three-game set to end 2014.

“It boils down to a mini-playoff series,” head coach Kevin Willison said.

“That’s the way we’re going to look at it.”

While the penalty killing and power play special teams are doing well, Willison says the team must concentrate on getting better at 5-on-5 play; something he hopes

a shoulder injury on Nov. 16, coincidentally against the Kings, when he got involved in a shoving match with another player and will require surgery.

“It was a freak thing,” Willison said.

“He got involved with pushing and shoving and his shoulder popped out of its socket.”

The Alberni Valley United Church has been filled with the sounds of music as the vocal and hand bell choirs led by Mike Villette, along with the children’s Ring and Sing led by Ellen Vander Putten, are busy preparing for a Christmas concert.

All three groups will perform on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the church.

Alberni celebrates 40 years of Starfleet Alberni and Canada.

When the call went out in spring, members and allies trooped down to the waterfront on a June evening, recorded the video clips, and beamed them over to project coordinator Jonathan Lane.

As clips were received from international chapters, preliminary edits were posted to YouTube.
