ffects of a recent heartbreaking fire at the Ellison family’s dairy farm are being doused by local and island musicians staging a Raise The Barn Fundraiser Dec. 7 at Avalon Equestrian Centre. Spokeswoman Laura Hesse says the fun-filled family event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at Avalon, owned by Jeff and Heather Winship, at 2442 Herd Road, North Cowichan. Music and sound is being provided by Ron Stewart Audio, assisting the Ellisons who lost a hay barn, a mobile home residence, and a raft of farming equipment. Their dog, Maggie, also perished in the Nov. 14 blaze fought by three fire crews. “When we heard about the Ellison’s fire, and were asked by friend and neighbour of the Ellisons, Jacque Duncan, to help, we were in,” said Stewart’s partner, Laura Hesse. “I know the Ellison family, having boarded my horse across the road for many years. They are a wonderful family, and my heart broke for them when I heard of their loss.” Stewart’s band, Ron Stewart and Friends, will open the show. Stewart, on lead guitar and vocals, “is known for his riveting performances and his minstrel-like strolls through the crowd.” Hesse’s press release says. Lead bassist, Paul Betker, is billed as “one of Vancouver Island’s, if not B.C.’s, most talented bass players.” Randy Cunningham on drums completes the trio. “Cunningham’s energetic performances always wow the crowds. They will also be backing up the other guest singers.” more on page 4

work stoppage at the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial prevented the paper from hitting your doorstep at its regularly scheduled time Wednesday. Unionized staff walked off the job Monday morning in an escala-
tion of strike action that began the previous week. A dozen members of Unifor elected to walk out after contract talks failed to produce a deal. The workers — members of the sales, editorial, creative and off teams — had been without a contract since Jan. 1.

The sticking point in negotiations is the company’s proposal for a two-tiered wage grid that would have existing employees maintain their current wage scale while introducing a lower wage scale for new hires. No further talks are planned at the moment.

good deed of the Duncan Kinsmen Club has turned into a gift that keeps
on giving. This summer, the club rallied around the kids of the B.C. Lions Society Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan, stepping up to repair the dilapidated camp pool. In the process it put swimming back on the list of camp activities and saved the Lions Society a $30,000 repair job. The Lions Society will repay the favour Sunday by featuring the Kinsmen project during its annual Timmy’s Christmas Telethon. Tatum Toporowski, the lifeguard whose pitch inspired the Kinsmen to their
good deed, got the following message from Verna Wright, special events co-ordinator with the Lions Society after she and others involved taped their telethon appearance. “Tatum, just wanted to say thank you again for being one of the smiling faces to represent the Lower Vancouver Island Kinsmen for the Telethon and for doing such a great job. “We are truly in awe of the generosity and amazing giving attitude of all the people who worked so hard to get the pool back in working order to be enjoyed by our wonderful kids. We are aware of what a lot of hard work went into the project and we commend you.” Toporowski and boyfriend Shane Hudson screened a video to the Kinsmen about the sad state of the pool, which had been rendered unusable because of a plugged valve and crumbling tile. The club, spearheaded by Mike Wiersma, stepped up with labour, material and expertise to get the handicapped-accessible pool shipshape in time for the kids to use this summer, much to

It’s akin to Christmas for

Christmas Telethon feature six hours of televised entertainment, special celebrity guests, and inspiring stories as they canvas the province for donations to help the charity help kids with physical and cognitive disabilities.
iFor the third time in less than three weeks, Duncan is under an open burning ban. A three-day was issued by the Ministry of Environment this morning, in conjunction with Island Health, for the area within 15 kilometres of Duncan city hall. The air quality advisory is back in place because of high concentrations of fine particulates that are expected to persist until weather conditions change, an order signed by Robyn Roome states. “Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted,” a media release reads. “Staying indoors and in air conditioned spaces helps to reduce fine particulate exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.” Under the ban, no new fires may be initiated and no additional material may be added to existing fires. Contravention of these ban may lead to fines. Recreation funding support should be mutual
Dear editor Can it be a surprise that there is less than total enthusiasm for the pet projects of the core municipalities? You might notice the more far-flung reaches of the valley did not express such enthusiasm as the people who live close to the Cowichan Sportsplex. Surprisingly Mill Bay and Cobble Hill seem to have fallen for this canard but consider it from my view here in Shawnigan: my kids can’t walk or bike to the ‘plex and I can’t readily walk there or use the exercise facilities, etc. The same applies to the Aquannis Pool. Don’t assume, however, that we don’t support these facilities; they truly are an asset for the region and once in a while we do use them. It’s just that everyone else seems to forget the crumbling facilities at Kerry Park and the increasing needs for recreational and community facilities in Shawnigan and elsewhere. If we are acting as a region then lets account for those interests as well as Duncan/North Cowichan’s. If not, then all the best wishes funding your pools and parks and plexes on your own and no surprise (or petty “you can’t come” attitude) required. Paul Warren Shawnigan Lake

Neubauer earns special Golden Brush President’s Award: one of 10 honours given during weekend Chemainus ceremony John McKinley

ou know the Golden Brush Awards as an annual salute to the those people who make Chemainus, well,
Chemainus. But despite the wide range of categories recognizing volunteers and businesses that go above and beyond, there sometimes is a special person whose efforts really don’t fit any of the programmed slots. Such a person is Ron Neubauer. Neubauer was recognized Saturday with the Golden Brush President’s Award, a “prestigious award given annually to a special person in our community.”
“This year’s recipient of the President’s Award is certainly one of those special people. And one of those individuals whose contributions go largely unacknowledged most of the time,” a statement on the Chemainus Chamber of Commerce website states. Neubauer, supervisor for the 49th Parallel stores in Chemainus and Duncan has lived in Chemainus for more than 30 years, and carved a reputation as an incredibly hard worker and an outstanding family man. Among his contributions: hanging and looking after the downtown flower baskets, helping distribute Christmas hampers, and being the driving force behind the annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock fundraising efforts. According to the chamber, more than $57,000 has been donated to Cops for Cancer, largely, through his efforts. His was one of several honours presented during the Golden Brush Awards Dinner and Auction, Nov. 29 at the Chemainus Senior’s Centre.

CBC’s Quirky science guy narrates English Christmas Holiday show: Cowichan Concert ices The Snowman

he Cowichan Consort Choir and Orchestra, the Bench Elementary School Choir and CBC’s Bob McDonald. It all adds up to An English Christmas, being presented this weekend in Duncan. McDonald, a Canadian author, officer of the Order of Canada and host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks, will narrate Howard Blake’s The Snowman, a British Christmas tradition. The Bench choir will sing and the Consort Orchestra, conducted by Robert Mari, accompanies. Ann Mendenhall will play piano and Marg St. Cyr will direct the choir for the famous Walking in the Air song
Bob McDonald as the video is shown behind the performers. This ushers in an evening of English music by Blake, Britten, Holst, Handel, Rutter, and Vaughan Williams. The Consort Choir will sing two Rutter carols, a movement from Britten’s Ceremony of Carols featuring Gwyneth Evans on harp, and selections of carols by Williams
and Holst, finishing with the rousing Hallelujah Chorus for all to join in. The show is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6 starting at 7:30 p.m. at Duncan’s Christian Reformed Church 930 Trunk Road. Tickets are $15, or $10 for students at Volume One, from Consort members, or at the door. For information, call 250-748-2460. ports editor Don Bodger’s youth athlete of the week and annual top 100 countdown inform us of the ongoing achievements of young people in the Cowichan Valley. In December 1967, the year’s accomplishments in track and field were celebrated at the Cowichan Valley’s Athletic Club trophy presentation. 1967 saw more members, higher standards, more track meets, more public support and more top athletes, said the club’s head coach Ton Hamilton. That year, club members place high among Canada’s young athletes, he added. In the B.C. championships at Kelowna, the club won five gold, five silver and six bronze medals and came first in the girls’ relay. At Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island competition, the club won three aggregate trophies, 26 first, 28 second and 25 third prizes. Top prizes for outstanding athletes of the year went to Mill Bay’s Paul Washington who received the Cowichan Leader trophy; and Elsie Jong, who captured the House of Beauty award. Also receiving awards were John Gibson and Sharon Crabbe, peewee class; Gary Anderson and Pat Fedun, bantam class; Don Kinney and Gail Turney, midget class; and Brian Robinson and Theresa Hicks, juvenile class.

Always keen for my truck ride, my every day spent at Dad’s side. As a pup I was very cripple, yet still I made Gord’s laughter ripple. He spent thousands to help me walk, and how I wished that I could talk. Then I’d have told him in my own way, how grateful I was for every day. I loved to hike and swim and play, with friends I made up in Rock Bay. Our hunting trips were especially neat; I took such pride in guarding meat. In Waldon Park where ball was played, happy memories there too were made. When we moved in with your girlfriend, Pammie cared for me until the end. Thank you Dad for all you’ve done, for 11 years we’ve had so much fun. I was not expected to see age 8, and these bonus years have been so great!

y the way, did you hear: • Bruce Cafferky of RBC Dominion dropped by the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre in mid-November to hand a cheque for $1,500 to the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Unit 34 Jaap Zwaan, tells us.
