Pitt council takes over economic development Replaces volunteer board members with councillors

Pitt Meadows council has replaced the volunteers who sit on the board of the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation with the members of council themselves.

Mayor John Becker said the change is a return to the arrangement when the board first was founded. Becker said council has “lost strategic control of the corporation” and needs to get it back.

He also said it didn’t make sense for economic development to sponsor Christmas in the City, or a Christmas tree decorating contest.

“We need to re-focus energies on the strategic work that was originally intended,” he added.

Coun. Janis Elkerton supported the move.

Two B.C. Appeal Court justices have ordered a new trial following the acquittal last year of Andelina Kristina Hecimovic of dangerous driving causing death in connection with the deaths of Beckie Dyer and Johnny De Oliveira four years ago.

“Without having a new trial, it

sets a precedent for everybody,” Becky’s mother, Debbie Dyer, said Monday.

“It’s a huge thing for the Crown to take it to appeal.”

When the new trial will start in New Westminster Supreme Court, though, isn’t known.

Hecimovic has 30 days to decide whether to appeal the case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

A Toyota driven by Hecimovic skidded sideways over a concrete median, flipped and landed on top of the couple’s Suzuki Swift. Hecimovic was driving in the rightturn-only lane when she crossed the intersection of Harris Road and Lougheed Highway on a red light. An expert estimated she hit the concrete median at a speed of between 100 or 110 km/h.

In the initial trial in September 2013, Justice Miriam Gropper ruled that Hecimovic was not trying to beat the red light.

Hecimovic testified at trial that

she was heading to her boyfriend’s house after a trying day working as a nurse at Eagle Ridge Hospital, where a suicidal young man vomited on her.

Hecimovic told the court she was thinking about her shift and suddenly smelled something odd as she approached the intersection. When she looked at her scrubs she noticed vomit on her shirt and burst into tears. She was trying to wipe the tears off her face and focus on the road when she realized she had run a red light.

B.C. chamber supports PST increase Some local businesses opposed to 0.5% bump

he B.C. Chamber of Commerce was in town Tuesday to try to get the local chamber to back the proposed TransLink half-per-cent increase in the provincial sales tax.

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce president Terry Becker, though, wasn’t ecstatic about the idea.

Speaking personally, before the board endorsed any position, Becker said she didn’t like any increase in tax.

“What I’d like to see here is what will be the increase in expenses to the small business owner.”

The B.C. chamber supported the proposal after it was announced by the mayors as a way to fund part of the $7.5-billion plan for TransLink for the next decade. Metro Vancouver voters will show in a spring referendum whether they support the idea.

The B.C. Chamber is part of the Better Transit and Transportation Coalition, composed of the Vancouver Board of Trade, Tourism Vancouver, and Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association.

Metro Vancouver voters now have the chance to decide between a strong economy and job creation or more traffic congestion and less service, said John Winter, B.C. chamber executive.

Local businesses aren’t as enthusiastic.

“My personal thought is, any increase in the PST is going hurt businesses in the Lower Mainland,” said Bryan Hutton, with Canadian Tire in Maple Ridge.

It’s difficult to tell what will motivate people to leave Metro Vancouver and go to the U.S. in search of better prices.

In addition to the higher prices, businesses also have to go through another tax change, one that won’t be faced by businesses east of Langley or Maple Ridge. Goods being sold in Abbotsford and Mission, for example, would only see the seven-per-cent sales tax, while in Metro Vancouver the tax rate would be 7.5 per cent, assuming voters approve the higher tax in a plebiscite this spring.

“It’s just one huge confusion. Personally, I don’t think anybody is going to vote for it,” Hutton said.

Scott Jones, general manager of West Coast Toyota, said the higher levy will remove the incentive for buyers from the Fraser Valley or Interior to shop in Metro Vancouver. A car buyer could save $150 on a $30,000 vehicle by shopping in Abbotsford.

“Why wouldn’t they? If I’m a Maple Ridge business, how am I going to compete on big-ticket items when the consumer can drive 20 minutes and not pay the .5 per cent PST? It makes no sense whatsoever.”

And where will the shopper go, to the Costco in Abbotsford or the one in Coquitlam, where he or she will pay 7.5 per cent PST on non-food items.

If businesses absorb that in an effort to keep customers, it means subsidizing a sale.

“For big-ticket items, it’s definitely not a level playing field,” Jones said.

It would make more sense to charge the extra half per cent throughout the Fraser Valley as far as Hope, he added.

However, Mike Zimmerman at Haney Automotive didn’t see much effect.

“I don’t think a half per cent is going to cause any of our customers to go anywhere.”

On a $1,000 repair job, the extra tax will add another $5 to the bill.

“Our business grows based on reputation.”

The coalition came out in support of more funding for TransLink before the PST increase was endorsed by the mayors’ council on Dec. 11.

The coalition has created a pledge for other groups who support the tax to sign. The pledge says that a yes vote for more TransLink funding will “strengthen our econo-

my, reduce pollution, improve the health of our communities and make this region a more affordable place to live.”

Allan Asaph of the Abbotsford chamber of commerce said it supports the coalition in calling for more TransLink funding.

That’s not because Abbotsford businesses are expecting a windfall as shoppers flee Metro Vancouver, but because it’s a reasonable funding solution, Asaph added.

The Langley-Abbotsford border and the Maple Ridge-Mission border are the also the boundaries of Metro Vancouver.

“I think the impact of shift in consumer spending is being over stated.”

Some big-ticket items will be cheaper, but Metro Vancouver retailers can use that as a marketing tactic. There’s been no growth in the number of gasoline stations in Abbotsford, even with gas prices 10 cents a litre cheaper in Abbotsford, he pointed out.

And some high-end auto dealers in Metro Vancouver don’t even exist in the Fraser Valley.

“The proposal is a reasonable approach. It certainly spreads the cost across the widest possible spectrum,” Asaph said.

For most purchases, an extra half a per cent won’t make a difference, and, overall, he added, improving transportation in Metro Vancouver will improve transportation in the Fraser Valley.

Adult students taking high school courses and English as a Second Language programming at Maple Ridge’s Riverside Centre may soon have to pay for their education.

The Education Ministry announced last week that it will no longer fund some students for adult upgrading courses, including ESL programs.

As of Jan. 1, 2015, postsecondary institutions will charge tuition fees for all adult upgrading courses and ESL, Beginning May 1, 2015, the Ministry of Education will no longer provide funding to school districts for tuitionfree upgrading courses for adults who already hold a high school diploma.

High school courses will remain tuition-free for anyone working toward and adult dogwood diploma, and for

adults looking to take basic, introductory courses.

The government says it is protecting low-income learners, and that up-front, nonrepayable grants will be available for low-income students attending adult upgrading courses, including ESL, at public post-secondary institutions.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board could not quantify the local effects yet.

Secretary-treasurer Flavia Coughlan said she is assessing the data now to gauge the impact. To date, the board has had no formal communications from the education ministry.

The board takes in a total of $150,000 in funding for adult education, with corresponding expenses.

Asked if it was bad news, Coughlan allowed that it was “Unexpected news.”

Others were less diplomatic.

“Today’s announcement is a total reversal of the government’s position on tuition

fees that no one wants,” said Zach Crispin, chair of the Canadian Federation of Students.

The move comes after tuition fees for ABE (adult basic education) were eliminated by the B.C. Liberals in 2007.

It was an outcome of the B.C. government’s Campus 2020 Report, and followed months of research and consultation, said a press release from the group.

“In 2007, this same government concluded that all citizens should have access to tuition fee-free basic education”, said Crispin. “Today, that decision was reversed, without warning, consultation, justification or reason.”

The cost of maintaining the tuition-fee status of ESL programs is estimated at less than $20 million across the entire province, he said.

“B.C. has a budget surplus in excess of $400 million.

There is simply no justification for cutting funding to basic education and asking students and families to pay more.”

on’t tell Richard Robinson you can’t enjoy your own homegrown tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers just because you live in a two-bedroom, thirdstorey apartment.

The harvest he and his family enjoyed this summer from the plants soaking up the sun on his balcony shows you can attain some self sufficiency in food no matter where you live. “It was pretty substantial what we had out there. The kids did almost all of it,� said Robinson, who lives near the Ridge Meadows Hospital.

The Robinsons had five types of tomatoes and two types each of lettuce, beans, peas and cucumbers growing their balcony.

To spice things up, they also grew basil, dill, oregano, parsley, cilantro, onions, garlic and sunflowers.

Lettuce and green onions grow all year long. “It takes a little bit of work to set up. The big thing is to make sure everything gets enough water.�

Robinson said their south-facing balcony that allows plants to soak up the summer rays for 18 hours a day helps with productivity.

Also, the plants have to be regularly watered. He uses coffee grounds collected over the winter as a mulch.

Robinson entered Maple Ridge’s Front Yard Food Garden Contest this year, although he didn’t win anything.

Maple Ridge recently has handed out its awards, gift certificates from the Haney Farmer’s Market, for the fifth annual contest.

Winners were chosen based on the quantity and range of food produced, the health of the plants and design of the gardens.

The event is held to raise awareness about the importance and potential of growing food locally and to show that food can be grown in people’s front yards and that “food production can still be a thing of beauty,� said organizer Diana Hall.

Low point The plummeting price of oil may have a big impact on the Canadian and B.C. economies in the next year or two.

Some of that will be positive, but it is likely that it will be mainly negative.

The price of gasoline (but not diesel fuel) is falling, and that means more money in the pockets of consumers.

This helps them meet other obligations, such as rent, credit card bills and child care.

If the provincial and regional governments can avoid the temptation to tax this newly-found money out of people’s pockets, the fall in prices will be a good thing.

One other bright spot may be a boost in exports if the dollar remains low.

The negative implications are widespread.

There will almost certainly be a fall in economic activity, and particularly jobs. Many well-paying jobs are concentrated in the oil sands. Many regional residents either work there or work for companies that supply the oil sands.

There will be no new construction projects in that area, as long as oil prices stay at the $60 to $70 per barrel level. It simply costs too much to produce oil from the oil sands.

As economic activity is reduced, it impacts taxation to the federal and provincial governments.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and B.C. all are dependent on revenue from oil and natural gas.

In B.C., one LNG project has been delayed by the falling price of oil, as Asian natural gas prices are tied to oil prices. More could be delayed or even cancelled. It is significant that none of the major LNG players are ready to commit.

A fall in economic activity likely means that 2015 will see much lower growth than anticipated, which won’t help the overall Canadian economy.

Tom Fletcher: The B.C. Liberal government has given every B.C. Views indication they’re going to proceed with Tom Fletcher the Site C dam on the Peace River. What do you think?

John Horgan: I’ve always maintained that it’s a good project, but it’s a question of when to add another $8-9-10-12 billion onto the backs of ratepayers.

First of all, go to the B.C. Utilities Commission and find out if this is the power you need and if this is the time to build it. The government refuses to do that, and I think that’s just an Achilles heel in this process.

TF: You voted for the liquefied natural gas income tax to provide certainty, and then you immediately said you would work to increase the LNG tax in 2017, before any major project could be started. How is that certainty?

JH: I thought it was important that the investment community in this sector knew there was bipartisan support for LNG in British Columbia. But we went from a seven per cent [tax] to a 3.5 per cent because of a softening market.

If there is a decline in return to the

province because of a softening market, then surely over a 25-year period – not just between now and 2017, but if the market conditions change and prices go up – I think British Columbians would want their government to make sure they were getting a fair share of that benefit.

TF: Why did you vote against the LNG environmental legislation?

JH: They said prior to the election that LNG would be the greenest in the world. And then when they tabled legislation they left out 70 per cent of the emissions from upstream activity.

TF: Gordon Campbell’s great goal for greenhouse gases, 33 per cent reduction by 2020, can that be reached assuming a substantial LNG development?

JH: I find it difficult to believe that they’re going to achieve those results.

[Environment Minister] Mary Polak has a different point of view, and our job as opposition is to hold them accountable to the numbers that they passed into law, and we’re going to do that.

One of the three sectors, housing, energy and transportation, where emission profiles can be managed downward is transportation. And the government has wasted 18 months talking about a referendum on [Metro Vancouver transit.]

TF: What’s your top priority for 2015?

JH: I think the public is going to increasingly find affordability issues to be the challenge. We didn’t spend as much time as I had hoped to on hydro rate increases, ICBC. When the govern-

ment balanced the budget, they did it by selling assets, and by increasing costs at their Crown corporations and then pulling that revenue in for budget purposes.

We’re going to have to use new technologies and means of communication to better explain to people what the government’s doing to them.

TF: What should happen with the agricultural land reserve?

JH: I don’t think there was a groundswell of opposition to the ALR, quite the opposite in fact, and the commission has in my opinion, infinite flexibility to meet the demands of development in northern areas as well as urban centres.

I’m going to make sure that [agriculture critic] Lana Popham, who as you know is fearless on this issue, is let loose on [Agriculture Minister] Norm Letnick, and we’re going to dog this issue up to the next election.

Editor, The News: Re: Mayors want to increase PST (The News Views, Dec. 12).

Mayor Nicole Read’s decision not to approve the draft transit referendum question is understandable, but disappointing.

Understandable, because she is right: this referendum makes local politicians accountable for regional transportation planning without giving them the power to implement their plan.

Mayor Read has been dealt an especially bad hand in that she is new to municipal hall and, therefore, her support of the mayors’ council transportation plan means supporting a document she had little input on.

Disappointing, because Mayor Read’s decision exemplifies the discord that will kill the referendum’s chance for success.

The mayors’ transportation plan, or even the mayor’s council itself enjoys credibility only with consensus.

While every Lower Mainland mayor has the standing to comment on TransLink’s control structure, rejecting the draft referendum question is the wrong place to make this comment.

The referendum question was never going to propose a change of governance; such a question would not likely be approved by the province. If Mayor Read, as she says, supports the mayor’s council vision and believes a regional increment on the sales tax is likely the fairest fundraising option, she has a responsibility to approve the referendum question drafted, which indicates new funds will be subject to independent audit and public oversight.

As a walker, cyclist, transit-rider, and driver, I implore the mayor to work with the majority of regional mayors on this issue and to not waste her influence. Rejecting the mayor’s initiative may risk her ability to leverage and argue for service improvements, such as a B-line buses from Maple Ridge to Coquitlam, that she made part of her campaign platform.

I’m worried for Maple Ridge. This is the table and this is the deal: if we’re not in, we’re out.

Make victim’s rights priority Editor, The News: Re: Not reasonable (News Views, Dec. 12).

The police searching your cell phone is a major privacy issue. That my be true, depending on your perspective.

The majority of us have been a victim of crime.

Whether you’ve had your house or business broken into, your wallet stolen, or your cell phone stolen, it’s a major invasion of your privacy.

The criminals ransack your house, look in your drawers, use your toothbrush, and copy any risque photos that you may have had on your phone.

To make matters worse, the criminals then use the stolen property or identification to fraudulently obtain goods and services in your name, destroying your credit and costing you even more money to get your good name back.

The police then arrest a suspect and locate some

of your belongings. But in an attempt to locate other evidence, conduct an “unreasonable” search of the suspect’s cell phone.

Fortunately, due to the “unreasonable” search, police are able to locate and return more of your belongings. Of course, the case gets thrown out in court because the criminal’s privacy rights were violated.

“I don’t think the Supreme Court has gone far enough by allowing police only restricted rights to search cell phones.”

Who’s been violated, you or the criminal?

In our current legal system, it’s the criminal who

fell on hardship and the true victim receives no compensation for the stress and expenses incurred.

Of course, police need to justify their actions, and be held accountable for grievous actions.

But who’s holding the criminals responsible?

Let’s look at this issue from a taxpayer’s perspective.

Policing costs are high and consume a large percentage of every city budget.

Also, police costs continue to rise, but statistical crime rates are dropping.

Doesn’t seem to add up, or does it?

The argument put forward by the author of the original article, and the Canadian Civil Liberties

Association, is to protect everyone’s absolute privacy rights 100 per cent of the time.

This will lead to increasing policing costs with less police officers on the street.

More police officers will be sitting in the office doing court related paper work, like search warrants, instead of being on the streets, preventing crime and catching criminals.

As a taxpayer, I want police on the streets, preventing and solving crime.

There has to be a balance between privacy and maintaining the law.

We all want to be protected from an unreasonable search.

Of course, being part of the majority of the population who are law abiding citizens, I’ve never been arrested, and subsequently searched.

So maybe I just don’t have the right perspective.

“It was a bit of a distraction, because of the old technology,” said Becker.

But city staff believes the new sign, even though it is bigger, will be less of a distraction.

The new sign will have automatic sensors installed to adjust the brightness, dependent on the lighting levels – so it will be brighter at noon than at midnight.

Becker said the sign brings revenue to the city, along with a package of improvements

for the municipality.

But its agreement with Pattison Advertising includes confidentiality around the financial details.

Becker noted that the former council already negotiated the deal, and the existing council is dealing with the height variance.

The city will also have the use of one advertising face on each display screen to promote Pitt Meadows services or programs.

City staff call it “a key feature at the western entrance to the city.”

“I support the concept of revalidating the terms of reference and mandate of economic development,” said Dingwall, “but I didn’t feel like I had enough in-

Kosicki said he would be happy to continue working to build Pitt’s economy.

“You don’t have to be elected, necessarily – some of the most valuable contributions come from citizens,” he said.

Ridge Meadows RCMP tracked down three suspects after a break-in to a business on Lilley Drive in the Kanaka Business Park on Sunday.

A neighbour called police about a suspicious vehicle at about 11:45 p.m. Police sped to the scene and arrested two men in a vehicle and later used a police dog to track down the third. Stolen property was recovered from the vehicle. Police won’t say what was stolen or the business that was broken into.

New car dealership in Pitt getting closer

There are a lot of conditions that have to be met before a new Maple Ridge Chrysler dealership is built on a vacant property just off the northern approach to the Golden Ears Bridge It is a 3.5-hectare property that was once part of the Meadow Gardens Golf Course lands, but was severed from the club by the construction of the approach to Golden Ears Bridge. The triangular lot, located immediately east of the bridge’s northern approach, has been vacant since.

The dealership would be located in Pitt Meadows, and Mayor John Becker said he supports the business based on the tax revenue and employment that it would bring.

“Now it’s going to be even closer than you think,” he quipped, referring to the dealership’s advertising slogan.

However, the City of Maple Ridge will have to agree to service the lot with sewer and water for the development to

proceed.

Pitt Meadows Council has officially asked for that, and there is precedent with other properties build along the border between the two communities.

Translink must also approve access to the site, which would come off Golden Ears Way. And the developers are contacting the Ministry of Transportation about access off the Lougheed Highway – although Pitt Meadows planner Dana Parr said that is not crucial to the project, because the principle access would be off Golden Ears Way. The property would still need to be rezoned from outdoor recreation use to highway commercial.

Becker said the dealership would face conditions and restrictions in its lighting, lot speakers, landscaping, building height and in other areas to ensure it does not disrupt the residential neighbours in a subdivision on 201st Street in Maple Ridge.

The developers held a public meeting on July 29, and resi-

dents voiced concerns about traffic, noise, light pollution, parking overflow onto their street and drainage.

Pitt Meadows staff noted “generally residents seemed to favour some kind of commercial development over residential development on this site.”

Becker said council wants to be good neighbours to Maple Ridge in the development of the site, and said the developers are taking the same approach.

“These are community people,” he said, adding they don’t want something ugly that disrupts the neighbourhood.

The development would include a two-storey, 56,600-square-foot building in the middle of the lot, with a showroom facing Golden Ears Way. It would have 586 spaces for car storage and parking.

The Pitt Meadows economic development corporation said the development is a good fit, but voiced concerns about traffic safety at access points off the Lougheed Hwy. and Golden Ears Way.

he Salvation Army needs donations to feed 300 guests a Christmas meal.

The Salvation Army Caring Place will be hosting its annual Christmas dinner on Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.

“The meal is not only a great way to share in food and fellowship, but it is also a warm, lively environment for vulnerable individuals in our community to feel loved during the holiday season,” said Amelia Norrie, public relations coordinator.

All are welcome at this meal, from all parts of the community, and Santa Claus will also be making an appearance.

The Caring Place relies on donations from local grocers and residents to supply the special supper.

With the dinner just days away, it is coming down to the wire to collect donations.

other services year-round.

Holiday Greetings Adopt a family for Christmas D

onations for the Salvation Army’s Adopta-family Christmas program are falling short this year.

For many, the holiday season is a time of family and togetherness, and the extra costs that go to purchase food, gifts and outings are a planned-for part of their family budget.

But for a few, the costs that go along with the holidays are a source of stress and anxiety, due to the pressure of not wanting to come up short for their family, at a time when expectations are so high.

The Salvation Army Caring Place in Maple Ridge operates an AdoptA-Family program to assist vulnerable families in having the best Christmas possible.

Last year, the Caring Place, along with community sponsors, assisted

The Salvation Army assisted 47 families last Christmas.

47 families with gifts and food packages for Christmas Day. Families are referred to the Caring Place from community agencies, and the referral is then assessed based on family size and composition.

Although there are other agencies in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows that assist families at Christmas, the Salvation Army recognizes that some people feel reluctant to ask for help, and

attempts to address this need so that no family is left behind.

This year, Adopt-AFamily needs are coming up short in some areas, and the organization is appealing to the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for their support.

Gift items: • gift cards for teens (movies, Subway, Coquitlam Centre, iTunes); • new unwrapped toys for children preschoolers

“It’s just such an amazing evening,” Bell added.

Holiday Train provides the food bank with its single biggest cash fundraiser of the year.

Last year at the Haney stop, CP gave the local charity a cheque for $7,000, and there were further cash donations of $1,700 from local people at the event that night.

Local firefighters also use the occasion to kick off their shake-a-boot event, during which they collect donations for Christmas charities at local grocery stores and other high-traffic locations. Last year, they gave Friends in Need approximately $9,000 in donations.

In addition to the cash, she estimates the food bank takes in 1,000 pounds of food that night.

With two stops this year, she anticipates local charities will be well stocked this holiday season.

Robson also appreciates that the food bank’s cause is highlighted in such a high-profile way.

The CP Holiday Train visits tonight.

he CP Holiday Train will make it’s firstever stop in Pitt Meadows tonight, with the former Blue Rodeo front man putting on a Christmas concert.

Jim Cuddy is riding the rails with CP this year, offering free concerts from the rolling boxcar stage.

Also performing locally this year is Tracey Brown – an inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

The Holiday Train will stop at the Harris Road crossing at 8:45 p.m. The boxcars will open on both sides, and a holiday street party will begin at 9 p.m.

Harris road will be closed to traffic during the event.

The concerts are free, but those attending are asked to bring a non-perishable donation for the Friends in Need Food Bank, or a cash donation.

Billed as “North America’s longest rolling food bank fundraiser, the Holiday Train started in 1999, and has generated $9.5 million in cash donations and $3.3 million pounds of food donations in communities along the tracks.

The Holiday Train has made Maple Ridge a regular stop, and it will first stop in Haney tonight at 7:30 p.m., so local people could easily see the show twice. It will continue on to Port Moody and Port Coquitlam for its last shows of the season on Dec. 18.

peration Red Nose continues to offer safe rides home in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows this holiday season.

With Rudy back as the official mascot, the operation is based at Maple Ridge Towing, in Albion industrial area.

The volunteer designated-driver service will operate again in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Dec. 19 and 20, as well as New Year’s Eve. It is now in its seventh year here.

Maple Ridge Towing owner Randy Sorley and his daughter, Dena, have been keen supporters of the program since it was introduced to the region in 2008.

“At the time, we were approached to help with Operation Red Nose, we had been considering offering safe rides home with our trucks for people who knew they shouldn’t be driving themselves,” recalls Sorley.

“When we understood what a benefit Operation Red Nose would be to this community, we wanted to be a key partner to ensure its success.”

Dena is the volunteer director, venue manager and lead dispatcher, providing more than 300 volunteer hours each season.

“The more road teams we have each night, the better we are able to respond to the clients requesting the service,” she said.

“We need at least 10 teams a night to give us the resources to do our best job of getting

Volunteers drive the client vehicles and the road team vehicles with navigators. These roles form a three-person volunteer road teams.

“We find that volunteers who have served on a road team typically return year after year because they find it rewarding to know they are reducing the number of unsafe drivers on the local roadways,” says Dena.

Operation Red Nose operates from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Holiday Greetings ALL Keep pets warm and safe Christmas Décor ’T 40% OFF is the season, and as British Columbians gear up to celebrate, the SPCA is reminding pet guardians that the holidays – and the colder weather – can be hazardous for pets.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holidays, including the furry members of your family,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the B.C. SPCA. Holiday pet safety tips: • Bones are bad: avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

• Thoughtful treats: chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pet over the holidays is to keep them on

their regular diet. Look for healthy animal treats instead of giving your animal companions cookies, rich snacks or sweets meant for people.

• Poisonous plants: many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets – especially birds.

Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people.

Some pets may have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant and may get diarrhea or vomit.

• Tinsel is trouble: having a Christmas tree and pets can be troublesome. Ensure the tree is well-secured and try to place the decorations above paw height. Using string to hang decorations instead of hooks helps, as hooks can be easily dislodged. If possible, use nonbreakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair – cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intes-

tinal problems.

Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets, especially chewing puppies and exploring kittens. If you add chemicals to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to help it last longer, keep in mind those chemicals are toxic to animals and keep the reservoir covered.

• Toy watch: avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones.

As the holidays near, the temperature drops below freezing in many parts of the province, making the season not so merry for outdoor animals.

“Cold weather conditions can pose a serious risk to your pet,” Chortyk notes.

“Extra caution should be taken to ensure that your pet stays warm, safe and healthy this winter.”

ith Christmas quickly approaching, so too are the mounds of wrapping paper that make their way into the recycling box after a flurry of gift opening.

The holiday season can tend to be a crazy rush and the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society is hoping that rush doesn’t lead to a lot more waste.

The recycling society suggests making lists in advance to help think of non-wasteful gifts: • courses, classes, or workshops will teach a new skill and give the gift of time to focus on learning; • tickets to a play, movie, speaker series, or concert are gifts that delight when they’re given and when the event takes place; • homemade crafts or the offer of time babysitting, dog walking, or sharing one of your skills is a lovely way to show you care; • holiday baking or appetizers that are always a welcome treat and can save the recipient time and money while hosting a holiday event.

The society also suggests that, when wrapping gifts, people use cloth or paper gift bags that can be used repeatedly, or use cloth gifts such as tea towels, new dish cloths, clothes, and ribbon as wrapping for other gifts.

Other ideas include using children’s artwork for wrapping special gifts or giving gifts that don’t need wrapping.

For people using wrapping paper, the RMRS suggests they pay attention to what kind of wrapping paper is bought and used as plastic gift wrap or foil printed paper is not recyclable.

Only buy paper wrap that can be put in the blue recycling bag.

Paper manufacturers cannot accept loads with a high level of contamination and unfortunately mixed loads sometimes end up in the dump.

••• Also this year, regular recycling pickup on Thursdays will be moved to Saturday Dec. 27. Set out by 7 a.m.

And for people who have made the switch to environmentally friendly LED Christmas lights, old lights can be dropped off for free at recycling depots, in bins located at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre.

Also, the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot now accepts more than 200 items. So if Santa brings you a new cell phone, new electronics, appliances or a new computer, you can recycle the old items for free at the depot.

Plus there is free depot drop-off

for the Styrofoam, cardboard and plastic packing the presents came in.

The recycling depot (0092 – 236th St., just off River Road in the Albion Industrial Park) is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but open late (till 7 p.m.) Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Garbage drop-off is available next door at Metro Vancouver’s Transfer Station, which is operated by SSG Holdings (604-466-9277).

••• The First Haney Scout group, which is participating in this year’s Waste Reduction Challenge, are selling Christmas trees seven days a week in the Cap’s cycles parking lot at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 216th Street.

When the holidays are over, people can bring their stripped Christmas trees by for chipping, by donation, for the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue team. The chipping will take place next to Planet Ice from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends of Jan. 3-4 and Jan. 10-11.

The scouts will also provide curbside pickup service of discarded Christmas trees to be chipped for a recommended minimum donation of $10.

Christmas parade draws a crowd

ore than 10,000 people lined 224th Street in Maple Ridge on Dec. 6 to welcome Santa Claus to Maple Ridge.

The Christmas in the Park festival attracted close to 3,000 people.

Dianne Enns, chair of the Christmas Festival Society, was pleased with the turnout, considering bad weather plagued Maple Ridge all that day.

“We ran out of popcorn as usual, we ran out of S’mores pops. The numbers were still good. We were quite happy with that we had lots

of people in the park,” said Enns.

There were more than 200 volunteers that helped in the events success.

Parade winners: • best band – Port Coquitlam Legion Pipe Band; • best animals – TCB Ranch and J&M Acres Horse Rescue; • best mascot – Maple Ridge Fire Department; • best community non-profit – Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue; • best youth non-profit – Port Hammond Girl Guides;

he festive sound of bells jingling, a smiling volunteer with a red toque, and a big kettle marked “Salvation Army” will get Christmas shoppers across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows reaching into their purses and wallets to help those in need.

The six-week kettle campaign has become synonymous the holiday season, and the 2014 Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign marks the 124th year that the organization has asked the public to help millions of Canadians living in poverty.

With a $4 million goal in B.C. and a $90,000 target in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the campaign will enable the Caring Place to work

ike Huber’s Christmas wish came true last year.

His son Issac was rushed to Ridge Meadows Hospital on Christmas Eve with what was thought to be appendicitis.

The family spent Christmas Eve and Day in the hospital, as tests were conducted and medications administered to relieve Issac’s pain in hope of avoiding surgery.

Hospital staff – doctors and nurses – not only helped avoid surgery, they got the family home in less than 48 hours.

But before that, Santa arrived at the hospital in morning of Dec. 25 with a special gift just for Issac, then 8: a stuffed animal named “Christmas.”

“This stuffy we will cherish for a life time as it symbolizes,

with individuals and families in providing basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter.

Contributions will also help The Caring Place provide life‐changing programs, such as housing support and job and skills training, to help vulnerable individuals find a way out of poverty, permanently.

t’s that time of the year again, the time when families come together, homes are decorated, and gifts are given.

I have to admit, it’s my favourite time of the year.

Many people agree that Christmas has become too commercialized in recent years and everything under the sun is advertised as a possible gift idea: tires, new carpet, oil changes.

People struggle to find just the right presents. They spend money on things that may never be used, or worse yet, re-gifted.

Christmas should not be stressful, or about spending ridiculous amounts of money, nor should it be about buying useless trinkets because you have no idea what to get your second cousin twice removed.

Since I have been in the rescue world for so many years, I can’t help but look at the world from that point of view.

When I buy my gifts, I make an effort to purchase things that will somehow benefit a charity. I check the back covers of calendars to see if any of the proceeds go to conservation initiatives.

I know a lot of people in the rescue world, and over the years I have gotten a good idea of what is needed to survive.

Big donations are always a plus and fun-

draisers can definitely put a dent in the vet bills, but ongoing monthly support seems to be one of the most important sources of revenue.

Sponsorship is the way to go.

Most rescue groups have a monthly sponsorship program. You go to their web page and check out the “ways to donate” tab.

In this day and age, you don’t even have to write out a bunch of cheques. You can donate monthly via Pay Pal, or your credit card, or even directly from your bank account.

The best thing about monthly sponsorship is that you don’t have to come up with a chunk of cash at one time, and no amount is too little.

Some groups do have monthly sponsorship rates, but no one will turn you away if you can only donate half of that.

So if you are struggling to find the right gift, if you have a person who loves animals on your list, and if you like that the gifts you give to make a difference in this world, then consider sponsoring an animal in their name.

It’s a beautiful gift and it keeps on giving.

Many rescues will send you updates on your sponsored animal – some sort of memento so you know that there is a living, breathing, soul out there benefitting from your kindness.

Isn’t that really what Christmas is about?

heatre In The Country will be resurrecting the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future with their production of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.

For the past three years the show has been held at Maple Ridge Christian School. This will be the first year at Theatre in the Country.

“The venue we’ve moved to is more intimate and it also allows us to do it as a dinner theatre,” said artistic director Reg Parks.

In addition, the audience will be asked to participate in the singing of Christmas carols and even do a little dancing.

Parks is also excited about new elements added to the show.

One element will be video of Scrooge walking the streets of 1840s London, England and through an ancient graveyard that will be projected onto a screen during the show.

In September, while leading a theatre tour through London, Parks and his wife, Erin, took a couple of extra days and shot the video of Scrooge, played by Parks.

“We always try to make it a little different in how we present it,” said Parks.

This will be the third time Parks has played the role of Scrooge.

“I think the most interesting thing about Scrooge is, of course, the story is so well known and taking him from the extreme of the greedy old miser to the most generous

But, he added, because the arch of Scrooge’s story is so well known, you have to be careful how you portray it.

“The most challenging part of it is acting away from the lines. In other words, reacting to what’s going on stage and trying to gage [Scrooge’s] journey emotionally as you’re watching these other scenes take place,” he said.

Jessica Tabak is back playing the part of Belle,

Scrooge’s love interest. A role she loves to play every year, primarily because of the song she sings when she breaks up with Scrooge. “ It’s been a big thing that keeps me coming back to the role. The song is absolutely beautiful and really heart breaking in a gorgeous way,” explained Tabak.

Although Tabak has played Belle for the past four years, she says she has in no way perfected the role.

“I think that’s part of the fun of it, getting to do it over and over and over again, is what can I push this time, what can I do better, how can I challenge myself,” she said.

Next year, Parks is planning to do a musical version of It’s A Wonderful Life and the following year a musical called The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, about the beginning of the relationship between Mary and Joseph and the nativity story, before bringing back A Christmas Carol.

“We’re just hoping to build a great Christmas tradition of doing really good Christmas shows out here,” said Parks.

For its 49th season, the Handel Society of Music will perform Messiah, by George Frideric Handel, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Maple Ridge.

The society was founded in 1966

by Karel ten Hoope and performs for audiences around the Lower Mainland.

The show will feature soloists soprano Nancy Washeim, mezzo soprano Ingrid Mapson, tenor Lucas van Lierop and baritone Willy Miles-Grenzberg along with the Handel Society Choir.

Orchestra and soloists will be conducted by maestro Johan Louwersheimer.

The concert takes place on Friday, 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 22561 – 121 Avenue in Maple Ridge or in Surrey on Dec. 20, 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2250 – 150 Street.

With sleigh bells ringing and joy in the air I reflect on the past year, I can’t believe how quickly the year has come and almost gone, especially the past 6 months. It has been a time of change for the chamber.

Since joining in June, I have been busy getting to know the amazing business communities of both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. It has been such a pleasure getting to know as many as I have in such a short time and I look forward to getting to know more of you in 2015.

Right from the beginning I was fortunate to be a part in the BC Chamber AGM. This is where Executive Directors from all the Chambers around the province are able to bring forth policy resolutions that impact their communities. It is also an opportunity to network with other chamber and partake in seminars and workshops that are relevant to chamber operations. It is a supportive group of professionals working together supporting the Chamber’s mandate to be ”The Voice of Business” .

It is with a fresh perspective that we move forward looking at how to better support our members and the business community. We have been busy working on our strategic plan and setting goals in preparation for 2015. We have implemented new programs and events, resurrecting old events and would like to share these recent Chamber highlights: • Membership has grown by 8%, we are now nearly 500 members.

Skateboard show boosts charities

Local skaters were at their airwalking best during the annual Shred, Share, Stoked skateboard competition on Sunday night.

In the advanced category, Noah Eastwood took first place, followed by Zacc Lester in second.

In the intermediate competition, it was Jayden Murphy in first place, followed by runnerup Levi Wihnon.

In the beginner category, Aaron Cunningham took first, and Anxen Lee second.

The event is also a booster for local Christmas charities, and participants are asked to bring donations of food for the Friends in need food bank, clothes and shoes, an even cash.

The entry fee this year was five cans of food, five articles of clothing or $5 in cash.

The event garnered two boxes of food, 14 large bags of clothes, footwear and other items for Cythera Transition House and the Caring Place, and $180 in cash for Maple Ridge Youth Council.

The Maple Ridge Ramblers senior boys basketball team played in the G.P. Vanier tournament in Courtenay over the weekend.

The first game had Ridge defeating Reynolds of Victoria 6852. Isaac Halas was player of the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ethan Coumont contributed 17 points.

The semi-finals had the Ramblers against the tallest team they had faced all year in the host Vanier team, ranked second on Vancouver Island in the 4A tier. The hosts won 64-46. Ethan Coumont scored 18, and Josh Solk, was the player of the game with 10 big points late in the game.

The Ramblers then defeated Eric Hamber of Vancouver 60-51.

The combo of Coumont and Halas had 17 and 16 points each and supported by Grade 10 Tristan Coumont with 13. All three players also had outstanding nights on the boards.

Coach Ken Dockendorf said the team is improving with the development of bench players Cole Deakin, Colorado Zelinski and Burke Brussow – each in Grade 9.

Friday the Flames hosted the Richmond Sockeyes, and lost 4-2 to one of the top teams in the Pacific Junior Hockey League standings.

Cordoni and Jordan Rendle scored the Ridge goals.

The Sockeyes enjoyed a big edge in power plays, and went one-for-six with the man advantage.

The Flames had just one power play, and didn’t score.

Sunday at Burnaby Winter Club, the Flames outshot the Steelers 2822, but couldn’t get a win – their power play couldn’t score in eight attempts.

Andrew Stelezki and Christopher Chen scored for Maple Ridge.

With a record of 1018, the Flames are still behind Mission in the standings, and outside of one of the four playoff spots in the five-team conference.

The Flames annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place this Friday, during the game against the Mission City Outlaws.

All fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal or new packaged toy, to be thrown onto the ice when the Flames score their first goal of the game.

The teddy bears will be collected and donated to the Ridge Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, and will become Christmas gifts for local children in need.

Ramblers medal at Fox invite The Maple Ridge Ramblers wrestling team had some impressive results from the weekend’s Terry Fox Invitational, led by gold medals from Cam Hicks and Ryan Hicks.

Hayden Tupper, Colby Ladret, and Lucas Kolobara each won silver, while Dionte Hurtado, Libby McDonnell and Jacob Burgi took bronze.

Marko Kolobara had a fourth-place finish, and Mateya Haintz and Miki Rowbottom were fifth.

Pitt Meadows golfer Ryan Hunt will continue his career with the Seattle University Redhawks in 2015-2016.

Hunt signs with Seattle U. Pitt Meadows golfer Ryan Hunt has signed with the Seattle University Redhawks.

Hunt is one of the top junior golfers in Canada, competing for Team Canada at both the North America Cup in Bluffton, S.C., and the Euro Junior Golf Cup at historic St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.

He helped Team Canada win both competitions, posting a 6-2-1 match play record in the two competitions combined.

In mid-July, Hunt finished in sixth place at the Maple Leaf Junior Tour/PGA British Columbia Junior Tournament.

He has already graduated from Thomas Haney Secondary School, where he received the Governor General’s Academic Medal for earning the highest grade point average in his class. Hunt finished with a 4.0 grade point average, as he earned straight As throughout his time in secondary school.  “Ryan is a very strong athletic competitor who is also tops in his class academically,� said head coach Marc Chandonnet.

“We are very excited to add him to our roster in the fall of 2015, and we believe Ryan already embodies all of the traits our institution strives to instill in our students. Therefore, we see him fitting in immediately in all areas, and we are confident he will have a great impact as a student-athlete.�

Seattle University is a catholic institution with some 7,500 students, and has a reputation for strong academic programs.

The school announced Ryan Hunt signed a national letter of intent during the November signing period to join the Redhawk golf program starting in the 2015-16 academic year.

The Seattle University men’s golf team finished its fall season with back-to-back second place finishes at tournaments hosted by the University of Utah and Georgetown University.

Lorne Smith. Lorne passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, on December 4th 2014. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother George and sister Sharon. Lorne is a decorated 30 year navy veteran.

He spent many years working for the Red Cross and continued

to service the local community by delivering newspapers, in Maple Ridge, for the past 10 years.
