Jeremy Buller joined hundreds of others awaiting a Christmas hamper Tuesday in a lineup that snaked around the Kelowna Community Food Bank. It’s not how he’d envision a perfect start to

the holiday season but, he pointed out, it’s better than the alternative. “Sometimes I feel awkward and ashamed about being here, because there are people out there who are worse off than me,” he said, as he awaited his turn to pick up all the fixings for a holiday spread as well as basic sundries. “But (food bank staff) have been really good

and they always remind me, the reason I should come here is so I don’t become one of the people who are worse off.” Buller is a regular at the food bank on Ellis Street. A series of injuries have left him reliant on Canadian Pension Plan disability payments and far from financially stable. So when his accounts run down, he turns to them to top him

up with supplies. “I worked for 20 years with no problem. Then things just fell apart,” he said, noting he has some plans in the works to turn things around. “If it wasn’t for this help from the food bank, I sometimes wonder what I’d do.”
