Christmas Fire Prevention
A Christmas message on fire safety from the Canada Safety Council The Canada Safety Council wants Canadians to have a Merry Christmas. Following these steps will help to make sure your holiday is a safe one. 1) Light up the night without igniting the lights • Purchase extension cords for the specific job – don’t improvise with an indoor cord outdoors, or daisy chain several shorter cords instead of just getting a longer one. • As with extension cords, indoor-rated light strings and pre-lit trees are for indoor use only. Products marked for
indoor use are not designed to hold up against the elements. However it is safe though to use outdoor extension cords and light strings indoors. • It is not a good idea to connect different types of light strings together. For example, don’t plug in a new LED string to your old incandescent light string. • Do not run extension cords under carpets, out windows or doorways where they could become pinched. • Inspect light strings/ set and extension cords before use, and discard any that show signs of

wear or damage. • Insert plugs fully into outlets. Poor contact may cause overheating or shock. • If using candles, burn them in proper holders, on sturdy surfaces away from children and pets. Put out candles before leaving the room or going to sleep. • Do not overload electrical outlets. 2. Staying warm • If you must use a space heater, plug it directly into a wall outlet, not into an extension cord or power bar. Give it lots of room -- at least 1 m (3 feet) of space on all sides, and turn it off before leaving the room or going to sleep. • Consider replacing old space heaters with newer models that turn off automatically when tipped or overheating. • Use a barrier to keep children and pets away from gas or wood burning fireplaces when they are in use. • Never burn gift wrappings, boxes, cartons, or other types of packing in the fireplace. 3. Cooking safe
If you have a real tree for Christmas, make sure it is well hydrated and away from fire sources. • Don’t leave grilling, frying or broiling unattended.

Smoke alarms save lives Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services Reminds Cranbrook Residents: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives! Working smoke alarms can make a life-
Cranbrook Firefighters would like to take this opportunity to thank North Star Motors for their generous sponsorship of our 2nd annual Fire Fighters Halloween Fall Bash that was held on October 25, 2014. A big thank you to everyone who attended! We hope you had a great time. We would like to thank Pacific Coastal Airlines and Sutton Place in Vancouver, B.C., for their generous donations. And of course to all the local businesses who donated door prizes and silent auction items for our event. A special thank you goes out to the staff and management at the Columbo Lodge, Krevan Photography, Kimberley Alpine Shuttle, Russel’s Rockin’ Roadshow and B104 and the Drive radio stations! Without everyone’s support and generosity, this event would not be possible and would not have been such a great success. We are happy to announce that we have raised just over $8,000.00. This money will be split between Muscular Dystrophy and the B.C. Professional Firefighter’s Burn Fund. Thank you everyone for your support! From the Cranbrook Firefighters
saving difference in a fire. That’s the message for a safe Christmas. Remember, working smoke alarms save lives and you should test yours every month. Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services would like to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them monthly. According to research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “In a fire, seconds count,” said Bill Munro, Fire Prevention Coordinator. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when
most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

Mountie releases elk–no charges laid

A screenshot of a video showing a Kimberley RCMP officer who managed to save an elk stuck in a wire fence recently.
On December 10, a Kimberley RCMP officer assisted an elk after she became entwined in a wire fence. Police were alerted to an elk in distress off Highway 95A east of Kimberley around 11 a.m. Sgt Darrell Robinson immediately attended and found a cow elk laying on her back with two legs caught in the wire. He was able to approach the animal and free one leg, using wire cutters he was able to free the second leg. Shortly after the elk stood up and walked away, with no apparent injuries.
Police believe the elk was held captive for a least an hour before their arrival. The elk could have suffered a painful death or be attacked by predators. Cpl. Chris Newel, Operations NCO for Kimberley said, “The public often call us when there is crisis or immediate assistance

3 Tips for Health
Several patients mentioned to me this past week that they are very confused about what to eat due to all the conflicting information about carbohydrates, fat and cholesterol. I completely understand. Even though it is my job to do so, It is a challenge for me to stay on top of the best evidence regarding healthy eating. The information and advice is often so contradictory that I am sure it must be utterly frustrating. The problem is compounded by the fact that individual needs and genetics make it impossible to be absolutely specific about the dietary needs for everyone. There is no one diet ideal for everybody on the planet. We can, however, make some well supported general statements about how to eat that will improve your health even though they fly in the face of conventional wisdom. At the top of the list is the need to reduce your intake of carbohydrates, particularly in the form of grains (like corn, wheat , potato and rice) and refined sugars (like white sugar, honey, corn syrup, fructose etc). Enough starchy carbohydrate to just fill your cupped hand is the most you should consume at any given meal. Doing so reduces your body fat,

lowers blood pressure and blood sugar, increases HDL (the so-called "good" cholesterol) and is very satisfying because you don't need to worry so much about restricting your calories. Secondly, most of us should be getting more of our calories from good-ol' fat. Yes, FAT. Not all fats, however, are equal. Trans fat and partially hydrogenated oils along with vegetable and seed oils like canola and safflower should be avoided as they oxidize (rust) and harm your blood vessels and promote disease. Fats from nuts and seeds, avocado and olive oil can be eaten freely and promote health. All of us also need some saturated fats from animal, fish and sources like coconut oil. These are stable fats that provide us with essential nutrients. And finally, consume more veggies! Any and all vegetables, including the dark green leafy ones, should be consumed freely and make up the bulk of the meal. These foods are packed with vitamins and minerals, have virtually no calories and give us much needed fibre. I hope these three health promoting tips clear up some of the confusion you may have about how to feed your body.

Opinion: Spend more on our highways by Brian Coombs This may be an unpopular sentiment at the moment, but perhaps the recent road woes on our local highways aren’t completely the contractor’s fault. Sure, Mainroad did partake in a competitive bidding process for the job and said they could do it on around $14 million a year. Across the border in Alberta, Volker Stevin seems to be able to keep clear highways, but they have a budget of $26 million, again, won in a competitive bid process. A lot of the criticism seems to come from the fact that the roads were horrible after our last rain/snow/ice combination, but many people are saying that if Mainroad said they could do the work on $14 million, they should live up to their end of the contract. That’s understandable. If you hire a contractor to re-do your roof and they come in over-budget, you have a right to complain and even go to court if need be. But that’s the problem right there. Our highways are not a contract for home improvements, they are the lifeblood of the province. And this province, (as many first-time visitors to the province visitors are aware) has some highways through incredibly dangerous terrain. On the prairies, if you skid off the highway you will find yourself in the ditch. In many places
out here, going off the highway could mean a long drop followed by a very short stop. At a press conference on December 5, Mainroad’s Al Sanders admitted that if the company had an extra $1 million, “...we could do a lot with that.” While giving this company an extra $1 million to fulfill a contract they bidded for may seem to go against the grain, compared with other expenditures, such as spending more than half a billion dollars on the leaky-roofed B.C. Place Stadium, this seems like peanuts. But increasing the amount we spend on our highways, no matter how important they are to our economy and our very lives, is a serious no-go in a province where elected parties are always campaigning on lowering taxes. And no matter how many times it is proven that lowering taxes in once place increases the amount of money we pay elsewhere, many of us fall for the panacea of lower rates. (MSP premium hikes anyone?) This is important to mention, because as soon as the idea is floated to spend more cash on highways, the rejoinder is always, ‘yes, but we’d have to increase taxes to do that.’ Regardless of political persuasion, our highways can be extremely scary in the winter months. If it costs the province more money to keep them clean, so be
it. And for those who are opposed to any tax increases, there may be no reason for that either. Maybe political parties won’t be able to spend $64 million on partisan advertising campaigns, but the rest of us will all have a better chance of surviving our winter roads if that money was placed in our pavement. For that matter, our current monopolistic insurance company, ICBC, had profits exceeding $500 million. Originally, the profit from this company was supposed to be specifically earmarked for things related to driving, such as roads. Over the years however, it has become an extra cash cow to go into general revenue. What if that money (all of it) was spent on our highways? This increased investment in our highway safety would most definitely earn dividends. In 2013, the trucking industry in the province brought in just under $2 billion, putting it above forestry for its economic input.* Reducing the hospital stays for those injured in accidents, damage done to vehicles and equipment and time wasted not going to work because the roads were too poor should make up for any shortfalls increased highway spending may create. For a province that is open to business, having slow, unsafe highways for months at a time doesn’t seem to be a very good strategy to increase the flow of goods. * According to stats from http://www. bctrucking.com.

The spirit of giving is alive and well at Save On Foods. Following a challenge by Save On President Darryl Jones for stores to meet or exceed a donation of 100 turkeys to those in need, the local Save On Foods did just that, donating the birds to the Salvation Army and the Food Bank. The store went one further though, and added a $150 gift card to each organization. Kudos Save On for making Christmas a little brighter this year. During the season of advent, St. Mary’s Catholic School prepares for Christmas by choosing a worthy cause to support. This teaches children about being aware of the needs of others in our world and community beyond ourselves. This year, the school is raising money for a Shelter Box which is a cause undertaken by the local Rotary Club. Shelter Boxes are used throughout the world to provide shelter for up to a family of 10 when natural or manmade disaster strikes and people lose their homes. The cost of one box is $1,200. Student’s will be able to track the box that the school contributes to and they will be able to know where in the world it ends up being used. Pictured in front of the Shelter Box are Kindergarten students Katie, Carley, Aila, and Zack.

One veterinary hospital in the B.C. com-

lation problem, along with the Creston Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS). The entire staff at Creston Veterinary Hospital and staff from Creston PAWS recently participated in two separate weekend spay/neuter events at the hospital, resulting in the successful sterilization of more than 50 outdoor-living felines in Creston and the surrounding area. “Everyone at the clinic pitched in. It was pretty awesome,” says registered veterinary technician Tara Halonen. “Spaying and neutering leads to better quality of life and also helps prevent unwanted litters.” Spayed and neutered outdoor cats are less territorial and spray

less, fight less and maintain weight better, Halonen notes, and fewer unwanted litters means a declining outdoor cat population. “This protects our native songbird population and prevents the suffering of countless kittens,” she said. Through its PetSmart Charities of Canada® grant program, the BC SPCA provided surgical instruments and sterile gear in spay/neuter surgery packs to help the Creston Veterinary Hospital provide the necessary surgeries. The BC SPCA also provided funding through its Community Animal Spay/Neuter Grant program to cover all other medical expenses. “It’s a fantastic exam-
ple of how staff at one vet hospital in an area without any SPCA shelter or clinic is helping to create a more humane community,” said Amy Morris, BC SPCA officer, policy and outreach. “Addressing the cat crisis in B.C. is a massive, ongoing undertaking, and this just shows how, by coming together, British Columbians are solving the problem, one step at a time.” Solving the province’s cat overpopulation issue is a major focus of the BC SPCA’s fiveyear Strategic Plan, as there are tens of thousands of homeless felines in communities across B.C. Olympic Spirit art exhibit showcases Canada’s athletes in Fernie
Photo sarah KucharsKi
From left: Artist Gordon Milne stands with Fernie Museum director/curator Ron Ulrich. by Sarah Kucharski The Fernie Free Press The faces of a dozen iconic Canadian athletes have been captured in vibrant colourblocked portraits and are currently being showcased in Fernie. The exhibit — Olympic Spirit: Canada’s Sports Heroes — is the Fernie Museum’s latest, making its debut on Saturday, November 29. On loan from
Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, Alberta artist Gordon Milne, who created the pieces, was in Fernie for the grand unveiling and delivered a presentation to attendees, providing insight and background to several of the artworks from the collection. The long-term project began in the late 90s but Milne said he really began taking it seriously in the early aughts (2000’s). Having come from no
previous painting background, Milne said he felt free to paint however he wanted to. As a long-time sports fan, he decided to reach out to athletes he had admired growing up. Each of the portraits, said Milne, is an attempt to capture the personality of the athlete he is depicting. A favourite of Milne’s is of famed speed skater, Catriona Le May Doan. He explained that when sketching the
drawing of Le May Doan (main image, top), the multiple Olympic medalist’s home was in utter chaos as multiple family members were over and tending to Le May Doan’s newly born child. “There was so much chaos going around her, but she was so quiet and determinedly focused,” explained Milne. The portrait ultimately cast Le May Doan against a background of Milne’s signature colour-blocking, transmitted in anarchic, chaotic colours to represent the disorderly situation he sketched
her in. Another painting, of swimmer Alex Baumman, is symbolically painted in many shades of blue for the waters that he swims in. “I’m blown away by the real sense of personality [in these portraits],” said Ron Ulrich, director/curator of the museum. He commented, “These are larger-than-life personalities on larger-thanlife canvases.” On the significance of this particular collection appearing in Fernie, Ulrich said, “We’ve worked very

JCI Kootenay gives thanks for another great Santa Claus Parade
Photo brian coombs
Around $10,000 has been raised to purchase Santa a new sled. You can still donate to help him get a new one for next year. Submitted
JCI Kootenay would like to send a huge thank
you to everyone who came out for the 44th
Annual Santa Claus Parade in Cranbrook on November 28th! It was a very rainy evening, but that didn’t stop hundreds of residents lining up along Baker Street to catch a glimpse of Jolly Old Saint Nick and his wife, Mrs. Claus. The weather also didn’t stop 40 festively-adorned floats and cars from proceeding through, while the elves and helpers walking close by handed out candy to the children. We would also like to thank the generosity of everyone who made a donation to the Cranbrook Food Bank, with over $3,200 raised this year! However, you may
have noticed Santa’s sleigh is in need of some repairs, and maybe even a complete replacement. Ahead of the 45th Santa Claus Parade, JCI Kootenay wants to raise $25,000 dollars to build a new long-term float for Kris Kringle. So far, about $10,000 has been raised, and with the deadline set at December 31st, time is running out! If you would like to donate to this noble “Claus”, go to youcaring.com/supporttheclaus, email devontwarowski@hotmail. com, or drop off donations at the Bedroom Furniture Galleries. Every little bit counts, but if you pledge more than $500, your name
or business will be put on a snowflake attached to the new sleigh. Back to this year’s fantastic parade, here are the top ten floats for the 44th Annual Santa Claus Parade: 1. Cranbrook Snowmobile Club 2. City of Cranbrook 3. COTR 4. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 5. Don Cherry’s Sports Bar and Grill 6. BC Hydro 7. Spirit Rock Climbing Centre 8. Kimberley Ski Hill 9. Just Liquid 10. Sweet Gestures JCI Kootenay is a group of young people, aged 19 to 40, who

OBITUARY
STAMBULIC, Vinko (Vince) March 26th, 1935-December 5th, 2014 As the last few notes of “Dante’s Prayer” faded away at the exact hour he would have left for work back home, Vince passed away surrounded by his family’s love in Victoria Hospice after a very short, courageous battle with a rare form of kidney cancer. To Vince, his family and friends were the foundation of his life. The love he bestowed upon them was immeasurable and returned by all who knew him. Vince is now at peace, knowing he has imparted a strong legacy based on his integrity, values, and love of life. Vince was born in Žejane, a village on the Istrian Peninsula in what is today Croatia. For the past 55 years, he has been a proud resident of Cranbrook, BC. Vince was predeceased by his parents Anton and Maria and his brother Tony earlier this year. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Anna of almost 57 years, as well as his children: Tony (Anna) Cranbrook; Mary (Don) Victoria; Rob, Cranbrook; Walter (Patti) Cranbrook, and Eddie (Tammy) Mission. Papa is survived by his 15 grandchildren: Danielle, Brittany, ToniMarie; Kendra, Michael, Eric, Daniel; Jordan, Matthew, Nathan; Raeanne, Joey; Johnathen, Vincent, and Ashley. He is also survived by his brothers Mike of Cranbrook and Vlado in Žejane and families. Vince was a well-known and respected master builder of quality homes in Cranbrook and the East Kootenays. Over the course of six decades, he built hundreds of homes to exacting standards based on quality, commitment, and loyalty to his customers. Vince had a tremendous work ethic and was in the process of building a house when illness took hold. He treated his customers as friends, and Vince’s handshake was his word: strong, honest, and enduring. Vince loved the outdoors. He often took his children and grandchildren to experience the majestic mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Kootenays. Vince had the quality to see the good in all people. He believed everyone had a gift to offer the world and could see their strengths and inner beauty when they themselves could not. Vince and family extend heartfelt thanks to his many close friends for their support, in particular his long-time friends Terry Segarty and Dr. Lawrence Jewett of Cranbrook. Their love, commitment, and support are greatly appreciated. The family would also like to acknowledge staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, BC Cancer Agency, Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria Hospice and, in particular, Drs. Andrew Attwell, David Brook, and Greg and Cecile Andreas, all of whom treated Vince with dignity, care, and respect. A celebration of Vince’s life will be held at the church he helped build in Cranbrook, Christ the Servant Parish (1100 -14th Avenue South) on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cranbrook and Kimberley Hospice Society (#230 20-23rd Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 5V1) for the hospice Vince wanted to build on his return back home. To send a condolence, please visit www.earthsoption.com. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark.
