Gift ideas for seniors and how to help those in need
Meaningful gifts for the seniors on your list
By Jennifer Blyth
Selecting the right gift for a senior can be a challenge. Perhaps they say they have “everything they need,” or lack space for many extras. So, what to get? “Our residents always enjoy nice chocolates and with the increasing price of chocolate this is even more valuable,” says Lynn Larsen, general manager or the local seniors’ residence, Amica at Douglas House. Through
winter, when the weather might keep seniors indoors more, puzzles can also be very welcome, Larsen adds. Gifts that consider seniors’ special needs are also most appreciated. Micky Fleming, from Cherish Living in the West Shore, suggests electric foot warmers, sweater vests, large print books and magnifying glasses can be much appreciated, along with homemade cookies and crafts hand-made by grandkids. For a splurge, a gift like an iPad – along with the gift or your time to help them get up and running with it – can allow seniors to exercise their mind and stay connected. Be sure to show them how to Skype! While children are understandably the focus of many social programs at the holidays, remembering older adults – especially those on a limited income – is also important. “We are definitely seeing more seniors coming in to Our Place,” says Grant McKenzie, the organization’s
