Billing it as the most high tech heart surgical facility in B.C. and rivalling anything else in Canada, Kelowna General Hospital is looking forward to a September 2015 opening for its Interior Heart and Surgical Centre.

The four-storey building dominates the corner of Pandosy Street and Rose Avenue. It’s a hive of activity as construction crews complete their tasks while the hospital community continues its daily routine.

Inside the new building, Doug Rankmore, CEO of the KGH Foundation, looks in some amazement as the complex of 15 operating rooms take on character with massive pieces of machinery starting to populate the spaces.

“This is the raceway around the ORs,” Rankmore said, looking either way along a wide corridor—one side of four that surround the rooms where the business of surgery will soon be performed, deep steel sinks fitted outside each doorway.

“All the ORs are accessed from the outside in, and the inside is a sterile core.”

Having watched the process from planning to construction, Rankmore was excited to now see the rooms be outfitted with surgical equipment.

“It’s becoming very real. The last time we

were in the building there wasn’t even paint on the walls, certainly none of the booms were in,” he said.

“If you look in a traditional OR there is a fair amount of equipment on the floor. The booms

replace a lot of that—it gets it up and easier to

Additionally, the offfloor booms are out of the way to facilitate easy access by the surgical team to the patient and equipment.

“Increasingly as we get more techniques we need new equipment,” said Dr. Gary Goplen, co-chairman of the KGH Foundation Be a Lifesaver Campaign. A former chief of surgery at KGH, Goplen said the design and layout of the ORs take future growth into consideration. “The new equipment takes up

room.”

Used to cramped quarters, surgeons and the five of six specialists in these ORs will have room to carry out their functions. “With this sort of set up there will be lots of room for patient management, and for teams who come in to help. Suffice to say these rooms are stateof-the-art—we can offer big city surgery in here,” he said.

It was up to Dr. Guy Fradet, co-chair of the fundraising campaign with Goplen, to explain the piéce de résistance in the IHSC—the hybrid operating room.

Lake Country’s Tim-Br Mart to close BARRY GERDING Business owners always face difficult decisions, but for Sherri and Keith Williams this month has presented the toughest one of all.

After several years of doing everything they could to keep their business, Lake Country Tim-Br Mart afloat, the couple decided this month to close it down as of Dec. 31.

“We’ve exhausted every option possible this last year and a half, but just nothing has worked to keep the business financially viable,” Keith said. “It’s tough because we feel the community really needs a business like this but we can’t continue to run it at a loss.”

There are 16 staff who work at the store, and all of them face being out of a job come the end of the year.

“We have had a terrific staff at our store and they’re all working right to the end to help us wind things down… that’s one of the tough things about having to make this decision as it

doesn’t just affect Sherri and I,” Keith said.

“Everyone has a mortgage or rent to pay.”

Sherri Williams is the vice-president of the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce, in line to move up to president next year, an awkward position to be in when you are closing down a business.

“With the chamber, we often talk about how sometimes people take their local businesses for granted, about how important it is to support local business and what a good thing it is for your town,” Sherri said.

The chamber just this year recognized Keith and Sherri with a business award for their contributions to the community.

Sherri originally purchased Lake Country Builders Mart Ltd. in May 2005 with her brother Kevin. Previous to that, she had worked since 1978 at Westside Builders Mart, which was started by her parents and was closed down in 2007.

There is not as much to fight over for projects and the profit margins are getting tighter.

“There are indications of that situation improving but not enough to make up for five years of losses. The volume just isn’t there.”

Going forward, Keith and Sherri don’t have any definite plans. They own the land and building at 3223 Woodsdale Rd. where the Tim-Br Mart is located, so selling that will help pay off their personal debts.

Keith said he would like to apply to work for someone else rather than run his own business, while Sherri says her role with the chamber will likely change in the months ahead.

“We love Lake Country as a community and were very supportive of it with our business. I likely won’t become president of the chamber next year unless something else comes up which keeps me involved in the local business community,” she said.

But B.C. has a lot to offer that will become the basis of a revitalization of the Super, Natural British Columbia brand.

“I thank God everyday we are not Saskatchewan,” said Marsha Walden, Destination BC president, speaking at the annual general meeting of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association last week, discussing a new provincial strategy centred on setting a new direction.

“I think it’s very positive rather than trying to do a whole new rebrand, because that’s what the consumer knows us as in British Columbia.”

Super Natural will be repackaged, becoming the basis of a new package emphasizing B.C.’s wilderness.

“We believe a bold new brand platform is what is needed to dramatically set us apart from all the competitors that exist in the world today,” said Walden. “We need to be putting out a brand promise that really ignites the imagina-

In addition to the booms holding surgical support equipment, the hybrid room will have an imaging machine anchored in the corner, but attached to the operating table. When the surgeon needs a fresh view, a ‘C’ arm comes out and rotates around the patient taking 3D images, which are broadcast on a big HD screen. What was a separate function

done pre-op in another part of the hospital, will be done in a matter of seconds while the operation proceeds.

Fradet used the example of blending a CAT scan and echo imaging into one visual.

“We can program the machine and in about eight seconds we can have a 3D image of the heart.” Inserting a heart valve, for instance, the machine shows the heart and gives real-time landmarks for the surgeon to follow.

PCC: Like any family that’s been through tough times, the first thing you need to do when you get back to finding a job and making an income again, is to pay off your credit cards.

And that’s what we’re going to do.

Thanks to astronomy and mathematics, we can calculate exactly when the sun will reverse its decline. In the Okanagan, that moment comes at 3:03 p.m., Pacific Time, on Sunday, Dec. 21.

But I wonder how many imaginary ropes we still wrap around bedrock beliefs.

Almost every civilizdation has some kind of festival of lights. Diwali, Chanukah, Christmas— they all occur during the months when darkness increases its momentum. In our culture, even pagans and atheists celebrate Christmas.

Are those lights, perhaps, our imaginary rope—a symbolic act that defies the darkness to advance 5any farther, an affirmation that darkness can-

not overcome us?

It’s no coincidence that Christmas happens near the winter solstice.

The Roman festival of Saturnalia was also a time of candles and extravagant light. It suspended most of the social rules. For the week around the winter solstice, slaves and owners mingled in an atmosphere of pseudo-equality. Laws and prohibitions were temporarily suspended, with lots of singing, dancing and drinking.

In that freewheeling atmosphere, the new Christian communities could celebrate without fear of persecution. Any other time of year, they were considered traitors; they refused to worship the Roman emper-

So, December 25 became their imaginary rope, connecting them to Jesus’ birth. But his birth date wasn’t actually made official until AD 354.

Because there is nothing, absolutely nothing, in the Bible that defines that date of Jesus’ birth.

It wouldn’t be stated as December 25, of course. The calendars we use today didn’t exist yet.

The Roman calendar of the time was based on the founding of Rome some 500 years before.

There isn’t even a reference that links Jesus’ birth to any of the Jewish festivals—unlike Easter, which is still associated with Passover.

But a lot of people remain convinced that Jesus wasn’t born on December 25. They wrap their imaginary rope around an imaginary date, and hang on tight.

I wonder how many other imaginary ropes we keep hanging onto.

I’m guessing out of fear of not being re-elected on this issue he chose to not make it an election issue and continued with the behind-the-scenes negotiating.

Now, less than a month after the municipal election he has stated that Lake Country’s share in this needless purchase—with our municipality carrying a current $11 million debt load—will have to borrow between $4 million and $5 million for its share. This same municipality openly declares that there is no money in the budget to repair and upgrade many miles of roads to meet current safety standards so that its residents can commute in a safer manner each and every day.

Public Notice of Open House Highway 97 - Crystal Waters Intersection Improvements

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure invites the public to attend an information session regarding intersection improvements in the Crystal Waters Road area on Highway 97.

The proposed intersection improvements would increase safety and reliability at both Crystal Waters Road and Rawsthorne Road intersections.

Information and the design of the proposed improvements will be available at the open house, and the ministry is inviting the public to provide input. Ministry staff will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.

The drop-in Open House is scheduled for the following date and time:

the less than democratic alternate approval process. As city hall you have the personnel and resources to organize a vote and should not try to ram this purchase through by forcing individuals to bear the cost and energy to put this question to your constituents for you.

If city hall cannot afford the cost of a referendum we most certainly can’t afford the cost of this purchase.

We all know that voter apathy is high, especially at the municipal level but at least a referendum would clearly indicate what the majority of those who care enough about our community to come out and cast a vote is. Let the majority have a voice, isn’t that what democracy is all about?

If you are concerned that a referendum would vote this purchase down and don’t have one then you are knowingly going ahead with a purchase and passing on debt to constituents that don’t want it—shame on you.

Should the majority be in favour, council should negotiate a more equitable share in this purchase, you don’t have to allow Kelowna to dictate the terms.

Population wise, fair would be Kelowna $16 million, Lake Country $2 million and Vernon/ Coldstream $4 million.

Why Won’t She Just Brush Her Teeth?

Q: I have a great teenage daughter. She is bright, attractive, and does well in school. She is on two of the school teams, and her coach claims she is a gifted athlete. She hasn't caused us a stick of trouble (knock on wood), and compared to problems some friends' children bring home our situation is a cakewalk. One problem – we cannot get her to simply brush her teeth. I know for a fact she skips, because like a mom – I check for wet toothbrushes. The telltale signs are also bad breath. Why would a girl who can spend an hour in the bathroom putting on makeup and doing her hair skip a 1 minute chore to clean her teeth?

What question would you like a qualified professional to answer?

Play to her vanity, because that will work where the health issues are ignored. There is a cosmetic aspect to many areas of dentistry – simply because if my job is to repair something and I have the options of making it also look more attractive – most of my patients think that is a good thing. Tell your daughter that your dentist is offering a 'cosmetic analysis' with her next checkup. You will have to ensure the dentist is on board.

She may try to cover things up with mouthwash but that will last 5 minutes. If she is ignoring brushing she will have bacteria buildup, and we explain how that results in a putrid odour that she cannot personally notice. She wouldn't work out in the gym and skip the shower before a date, would she? Same issue – just different details. She is genetically wired to ignore her mother, so this 'advice' should come from some third party, like her dentist.

Count your blessings. Make an appointment and give your dental office the 'heads-up'. He or she will help her get through this phase!

He smirked at me like only a 14 year old can – and said 'By the time I'm 40 we'll have flying wheelchairs'. This was talking to a wall.

Listing now means that your home will have less competition during the winter months, and a less crowded market for a buyer to choose from. Having showings at this time of year also reduces the number of “tire-kicker” showings because serious buyers tend to have fewer houses to choose from during the holidays. On one hand, you may have fewer showings but, buyers tend to be more serious, are motivated and are qualified to buy. Remember, it only takes one buyer for your home to sell so don’t miss out on listing your home this holiday season. When you are ready to list your home this holiday season, remember…your home might just end up on Santa’s “buy” list!

At this time of year my eyes start to feel gritty and scratchy - is there a better alternative to artificial tears?

Dry eye is common during the winter as the heaters start to come on and the air dries out. Artificial tears are a mainstay of dry eye treatment as they provide lubrication to the ocular surface, however they are not curative they simply relieve symptoms. Some artificial tears are better than others though, so always use one recommended by your optometrist or pharmacist.

Lifestyle modifications can help as well, such as staying hydrated by drinking lots of water, taking fish oil/Omega-3 supplements and taking breaks from the computer (did you know we blink half as often when staring at a computer screen? Definitely drying to the eyes!).

We know that the root of dry eye is inflammation, so if artificial tears aren’t enough to manage your symptoms your doctor of optometry might put you on a short course of anti-inflammatory (steroid) drops. Sometimes this can provide months of relief, even once you are off the drops. Lastly, within the past few years a new and exciting dry eye treatment has been made available in Canada. It is the only treatment shown to actually cure dry eye in 70% of cases, and it is safe to be on in the long-term for most patients. Be sure to ask your optometrist if this might be right for you.

• Establish the subject of the conversation, if the subject changes, announce the change • Speak normally (not louder or exaggerated) • Use gestures as well as words (visual cues aid understanding) • Avoid speaking over background noise (ie. fans, radios) • Face the person. Sound doesn’t carry well around corners • Make sure that the listener can easily see your face (do not chew, or cover your face) • If asked to repeat yourself; rephrase rather than repeat the exact same words • Monitor the listener’s understanding

Lake Country firefighter recognized for his long service At a Lake Country Fire Department recognition event, Lieutenant Michael Gesi was presented with a BC Long Service Award.

Gesi started his career in firefighting with the Township of Langley, where he was a paidon-call firefighter for 20 years. He has spent the past five years as a paidon-call firefighter in Lake Country.

The District of Lake Country’s chief administrative officer Alberto De Feo presented Gesi with a B.C. Long Service Award medal and certificate, while Fire Chief Steve Windsor described the dedication and selflessness with which Gesi has served his community and this province in the protection of life and property.

British Columbia Long Service Medals are awarded by the provincial government to persons who have completed at least 25 years of paid or volunteer fire service in British Columbia.

Whole community supports the food bank

“Cram the Cruiser” with non-perishable food donations.

This year members of the Lake Country Volunteer Fire Department partnered up with police and came out to support this great cause for the community. They served chili and a bun for donations to the food bank.

Cash and cheque donations were also accepted, with all donations solely benefiting the Lake Country Food Bank.

“Our largest donation this year came from Keith and Loretta Stutters, of Stutters Disaster Kleenup in Kelowna, who donated $2,000 to the Lake Country Food Bank,” said Const. Jesse DO’Donaghey.

“Also Todd Ryder, the manager of the Cooper’s Foods in Lake Country, generously donated hun-

dreds of the pre-packaged bags of food items including the $5 raised for each of them.”

The winner of the grand prize donated by WestJet—a travel voucher for two return WestJet flights anywhere WestJet flies—was Bretta Lawton of Lake Country.

Phyllis MacPherson, the manager of the Lake Country Food Bank, took time to visit all the volunteers at the event.

Council has been asked to approve a Temporary Permit to allow for a finishing carpentry company that manufactures cabinetry, countertops and custom wood working in an existing accessory building on the property.

A Temporary Permit may be used for a maximum period of three years, and may be renewed once. After that time they may reapply for a new Temporary Permit.

Council may specify conditions under which the Permit may be carried on.

Lake Country Citizen of the Year Nominations Now Open The “Sax Koyama” Award The Oceola Fish & Game Club annually recognizes a dedicated citizen within the community, in memory of Sax Koyama.

You are invited to nominate an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the community taking into consideration the following:  The recipient must be a resident of Lake Country and surrounding area north of Duck Lake (e.g. Holiday Park);  Submissions must be based on outstanding contribution having a direct beneficial effect on the community and its residents.

The function of the award is to:  To recognize the outstanding efforts of a citizen working for the benefit of the community.  To foster community spirit.  To create awareness of the varying contributions made toward the wellbeing of our community by its citizens.
