Growing up years with hockey greats The earth moves on its axis just like it should, and Christmas begins peeking out of shop windows and flaunting itself on people’s lawns and in their living rooms, and, weirdly, I feel all sad.

The sad feeling began, like a little ache in my tummy, spreading quickly to my brain like some sort of unchecked virus.

Now, don’t get me wrong. It has nothing to do with Christmas.

I love Christmas, always have, always will. I do! I truly believe the editorial, Yes, Virgina, there is a Santa Claus.

Seriously, I think each and every Christmas brings with it special moments, unique as Treena Mielke snowflakes, that are On The Other Side too wonderful and too awesome to ever be forgotten.

No, the sadness was because of CBC radio, which I listen to faithfully, mostly because it has excellent news coverage and also because it seems to be the only radio station I can get without lots of annoying static.

Anyway, the other day CBC carried the sad news of the death of Jean Beliveau, the great Montreal Canadiens hockey player.

When I heard the news, for some reason, unbidden tears flooded my eyes, which I rubbed furiously away, being I was driving and all.

Of course, I didn’t know Jean personally, for one thing he was much older than me, plus he played for Montreal and my brothers and I, we always loved Toronto.

But, for me, Beliveau was part of the innocence and simplicity of a childhood that will exist forever on the blackboard of my mind, no matter

how the years keep trying to erase the memories away.

Beliveau was the “he shoots, he scores,” announcer voice of my brother, perched at the other end of a hockey game where the tin red men of Montreal Canadiens faced off against the tin blue men of Toronto Maple Leafs.

My brother and I played and played on that hockey game, until the game was called because of church, but afterwards we usually picked up the game again, going into double overtime when the blue guys inevitably scored the winning goal.

My brother was a skinny kid, with a shock of dark hair, a kid whose smile always reached his eyes, especially when he had a hockey stick in his hand. My brother, and his hockey friends, some real, some imaginary, would play hockey all winter and then shoot imaginary pucks into the coal shed all summer.

During those long ago winters etched in black and white simplicity across the landscape of my childhood, I remember the original six and the Condor Comets being of equal importance.

Two of my brothers, wearing worn scarlet jerseys and Eaton catalogue shin pads secured with sealer rings played for the Condor Comets.

In my mind, they were the best players in my entire world, which, for the most part, consisted of a main street, a church, a school and a hockey rink.

I did not compare them to anyone from the Original Six, like Beliveau because I think in my child’s mind, the NHL players were actually made of tin.

Being a kid without a mom around to soften the edges of my world wasn’t really so bad and I remember the days of my childhood with something akin to a warm kind of longing.

And, sometimes, when I sit in my living room, my fingers curled around a cup of coffee, with the lights down low, I swear I can see them all again.

My brothers, my dad and that old hockey game and once again, with the sounds of silence ringing in my ears, I hear my brother’s voice, loud and clear.

“He shoots, he scores!

And I smile and move on!

Tax savings for Canadian Families Over the last month there has been a lot of commentary surrounding the recent tax cuts announced

by Prime Minister Harper. These cuts as many of you know are geared towards families – this is a positive step for hard working Canadian families. Here are some facts about the initiatives: For one, the Family Tax Cut or Income Splitting will allow higher earning spouses to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to their spouses who are in a lower tax bracket. Additionally, this credit is capped at $2,000 for couples with kids under the age of 18 and will be claimable in the 2014 tax year.

Second, our Government is increasing the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). For kids under the age of six, starting January 1, 2015 parents will receive a benefit of $160 per month for EACH child under 6 – an increase of $60 dollars per month. This amounts to a benefit of almost $2,000 per child.

Third, we have expanded the UCCB to children ages 6 through 17. Starting January 1, 2015; parents will receive a benefit of $60 dollars per month for kids aged six to seventeen, totaling $720 dollars per child for the year.

Fourth, we are increasing the Child Care Expense Deduction Limit by $1,000 dollars – effective in the 2015 tax year. This means for children under the age of 7, parents can now claim $8,000.

For Children 7 through 16, parents can claim $5,000

and $11,000 for children who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. Additionally, last month the Prime Minister announced our intention to double the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and make it refundable.

These measures are MP Blaine a positive step forward for Canadian families Calkins but the opposition disagrees. If we examine some of the numbers you can see clearly the opposition parties are offside with Canadian families.

For example a couple that is a two income couple with a 7 year old and a 3 year old; with one parent making $95,000 and the other earning $25,000 –the tax measures our Government has announced and introduced since 2006, would save this family about $7,285 in 2015. Furthermore, by calculating JUST the UCCB measures for this family starting in 2015 until the oldest child reaches 17 years of age, this family would benefit almost $14,000 dollars.

Justin Trudeau has said that our plan will not

benefit single parents. He is misleading Canadians. If you take a single parent earning $45,000 and raising a 4 year old child in 2015, under our measures this single parent would be better off by about $3,325 dollars. If you compound that until the child’s age of 17, assuming the parent has no other children, they will benefit from our measures by close to $13,000.

In Mr. Trudeau’s champagne world that benefit might not mean anything, but for hard working single parents in Central Alberta, $13,000 means help with everyday expenses, child care or future education planning. It is easy for the leader of the third party to make outlandish and unsubstantiated claims but the numbers don’t suit his rhetoric.

While the opposition parties dream of ways to make life more taxing for Canadians, our Government will continue to introduce measures that reduce the overall tax burden of Canadians and Canadian families so they have more of their own money staying in their pockets.

Interim budget ready for green light by Rimbey town council

Council is looking at streamlining its recycling service

By Treena Mielke After several meetings and indepth discussions, council is almost ready to give the green light to an interim operations budget that will come close to five million dollars.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said he believes the budget talks went well, though there are still several unknowns.

“I expect the assessment will go up,” he noted. “However, there has been a slight increase in residential and commercial (properties).”

Rimbey CAO Lucien Cloutier said the budget cannot be finalized until the assessment is determined which will be in the New Year.

“This year’s budget does not include the figures from requisitions which we will have in the New Year,” he said.

While assessments have shown an average 3.4 per cent increase in the last few years, they have fluctuated wildly from year to year, he noted.

The interim budget does not reflect major changes in service levels, al-

Art fusion project created by young Rimbey artists

By Treena Mielke A group of budding young artists from the student art fusion has pooled their talents to create a large wall painting with the theme, ‘Our Rimbey Community.’

The art fusion project was created by the class this fall as its legacy project.

“Our objective was to learn some techniques in art such as graduations and resists and design and use them to create a grander work as it comes together,” said Sharon Johnston, president of the Rimbey Art Club.

The club plans to donate the painting to the town.

“We want to donate it as a token of our positive feeling of being part of a work of art and part of something grander …… a community,” said Johnston.

The student art fusion, one of the club’s seven programs, is in its third year of operation.

The art club runs a fall and winter series of art fusion which is comprised of eight sessions each.

Students register for the program through the Town of Rimbey and the art club provides the studio and instruction on art concepts and elements and also comes up with a variety of projects.

Tracy Davis manages the program.

Margreet Beekman, Jan Boyarzin, Tracy Davis, Cassidy Davis, Eliabeth Jones, Grace Johnson, Sharon Johnston, Dawn Nawrot, Sandra Peacock, Annette Peck and Mandy Swanson have all contributed their time and talent to teaching a variety of courses during the time the art fusion group has been operational.

Donors who have helped keep the art group afloat in-

clude Bonavista, Rimbey, Clear Creek Oilfied and Gull Lake Golf Course.

2015 will mark the 50th anniversary for the art club.

“As the RAC proceeds into 2015, our 50th anniversary year, we reflect on what a responsibility we have to keep the club alive and well for this generation, and the ones to come. We welcome all those who have any interest in the art and offer various avenues to pursue their creative endeavours,” said Johnston. “We have presently a number of variety projects that sustain us and we think future is bright,” she added.

Legacy: This piece of art was created in the Student Art Fusion program of Rimbey Art Club.

The legacy project, Our Rimbey Community, will be donated to the town. Prepare for Yuletide season with a designated driver Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 45 files this week.

Highlights include a domestic disputes, break and enters, theft and other serious matters.

Car stolen On Friday, November 28th, at approximately 3:00 p.m., an unknown culprit stole a 2005 Ford Escape when it was left unattended while the owner was warming it up in their driveway. To their dismay, the victim watched their SUV speed away without giving anyone permission to take it. Police quickly patrolled the area but were not able to locate it until later when it was found abandoned in Sylvan Lake.

Unfortunately, in this case, the owner had also left his wallet in the car so the thief not only got a free ride out of town but got a tip too!

Break and enter On the evening of November 29th, just before 9:30 p.m., a lady was startled when she saw a man trying to crawl into her house through a basement window. When the perpetrator saw her he immediately ran away. Police surrounded the area but were unable to locate anyone matching the bandit’s description.

Repeat offenders Mounties in Rimbey continue to target repeat offenders to ensure they are abiding by parole and probation orders while

they are living in the community. Further charges were laid this week and arrests made when officers found the chronic habitual offenders violating their release conditions.

Diesel theft During the night of December 2nd, thieves hit another oil lease site near Bluffton stealing hundreds of litres of diesel by syphoning the fuel from heavy equipment.

Later the next day, a black Dodge truck returned to the scene of the crime but took off when they were seen by a lone worker who was still at the site after everyone else had departed for the evening. Police continue to seek the person(s) responsible for these crimes.

The convention was held in Saskatoon, Sask. Nov. 27 to 29.

Alberta Beef Producers wraps up three day AGM (Calgary, AB) For three days, producers, industry, government representatives and Alberta Beef Producer (ABP) delegates tackled big issues impacting the province’s cattle industry. The Annual General Meeting was held in Calgary Dec. 1 to 3 and included speakers, resolution debates and elections.

“The ABP delegates participated in active and thoughtful debates on the resolutions from the fall meetings and the Board of Directors related to the Plan Review. The resolutions that were carried will provide clear direction to ABP as we begin the process of working with Marketing Council on changes to our regulations and by-laws,” said Rich Smith, ABP Executive Director.

The delegates heard informative presentations on the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, an in-depth look at social media from FarmOn and a look at the new Canadian Beef Centre of Excellence from Canada Beef Inc. Industry updates were given from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), the Beef Cattle Research Council and Canfax.

The first evening speaker was Stuart Somerville, one of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders in the CCA

development program that provides training and mentorship to young cattle producers. The Environmental Stewardship Award was presented the following night at the banquet to Bar S Ranch and the Chattaway family of Nanton, AB. The 2015 Executive was elected.

Greg Bowie (Ponoka) was re-elected Chair, Bob Lowe (Nanton) was re-elected Vice Chair, and Roland Cailliau (Valleyview) joins the executive as Finance Chair.

ABP welcomes the newly-elected 2015 Board of Directors: Rick Friesen (Vauxhall), Cecilie Fleming (Granum), Brian Edge (Cochrane), Judy Fenton (Irma), Rob Somerville (Endiang), Tim Sekura (Rocky Rapids), Colin Campbell (Bon Accord), Lyndon Mansell (Innisfree), Norm Hennigar (Grande Prairie), Roland Cailliau (Valleyview), John Buckley (Cochrane), Howard Bekkering (Vauxhall), Larry Delver (Calgary) and Tim Smith (Coronation).

Rimbey Ladies Hospital Auxiliary here to help out

By Gladys Wilson The Rimbey Ladies Hospital Auxiliary is a busy group.

The Auxiliary sells raffle tickets, which is a big source of income and has a bake sale at the Co-op annually.

The group also delivers boutonnieres’ and corsages to long term care patients on the day of their birthday, serve birthday cake and change the flowers in Area 2 to fit the season. Bringing in dogs to cheer up patients in Long Term Care is another one of the ladies’ duties.

Auxiliary ladies also help out in the beauty salon by taking patients back and forth to their rooms.

Since its formation in 1986 the auxiliary has donated approximately $75,000 to the Hospital for patient comforts. All the support from Rimbey and district residents is very much appreciated.

New members are always welcome. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month except July and August at 1 p.m. at the Conference Room at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Center.

Rimbey woodworker enjoys creating unique and interesting wooden pieces and toys

By Treena Mielke As far back as he can remember, Harry Stuart has enjoyed making toys for kids, a hobby which has expanded to include patio tables and potato bins as well as a number of other creative endeavours.

However, for many years he didn’t have time to indulge in his passion, as he was busy following a career path that took him in many different directions.

He worked for some time in print and broadcasting media, and also did a stint in the oilfield and spent some time working for a cabinetmaker.

Unfortunately, a serious injury he obtained in the oil field laid him up for some time.

He and his wife Linda and their family moved to Rimbey 28 years ago and he opened a sharpening shop here.

Running a small business in a small community proved lucrative and satisfying for Stuart, and he and his wife decided to set down roots here

and make Rimbey their home.

However, Stuart suffered a heart attack in 2005, and subsequently was unable to continue with his business.

But, as so often happens, when fate intervenes and one door closes, another one opens, and for Stuart it seemed the door that opened led him right back to his passion for woodworking.

He opened STU-ART Productions in 2005 and never looked back.

“I don’t want to do anything else,” he admitted. “I love it.”

In some ways, it seems the humble little shop could be compared to Santa’s workshop. Shelves of little toy cars and trucks, some painted, some left plain adorn one side of the shop.

A stack of wooden tables, which apparently are good for sitting on as well, (if you are less than 300 pounds), are stacked somewhere in the vicinity of the middle of the shop.

He has lots of orders on the go, and admits he is behind on some, but adds he will be sure and get orders to his customers on time and before Christmas if requested.

Owning a small business means helping out neighbors and friends, many of whom are also operating small businesses.

Stuart tries to shop locally for much of his wood and often works with Jackie Stratton from Scratchin the Surface for engraving on many of his products.

He also donates hand made products to local organizations.

Stuart and his wife Linda have three children, Wade, Trinity and Cali and three grandAn Eagle inside of an Eagle that is scroll sawed and framed with red children.

Bentley bonspiel biggest in years

By June Norvila This year the Bentley Farmer’s Bonspiel that ran November 24-29 was the biggest in many years. There were 30 teams entered in the fourevent bonspiel this year. Once again a junior team was entered.

The ice was good and ready to go, and despite a huge snowfall with drifting snow and drastically dipping temperatures that caused school closures B-Event: Winning and cancellations for Thursday and Friday, it the Bentley Farmer’s didn’t curtail the action at the local curling rink.

There were evening draws throughout the Bonspiel ‘B’ event was the Tony & Jeff week starting on Monday at 6:00 p.m. Action ended with four draws on the final day, so one Kamlah crew from Laearlier morning, with the four finals on the Satcombe who beat out urday 3:15 p.m. draw. In the evening following Bob Percharsky. play, there was a banquet at the Bentley Ag Center Photos submitted catered by Classic Catering for all the curlers and guests where there were a few door prizes and silent auction items.

Going through undefeated to capture the “A” Event was the Ernie Rodermond crew who beat the Don Olson foursome (“B” event winner last year) in the final “A” event game. Placing third was the Walter Jensen team and fourth was Randy Johanneson.

With only one loss and winning the “B” Event was the Tony Kamlah team who beat out Art Dykstra in the final making Bruce Millar third and Bob Pecharsky fourth.

In the ‘C’ Event the repeat winner was Darren LaGrange, who had won the ‘C’ event last year, and this year defeated Herman Wegmann in the final so Arnold Kubista (Cecil Galloway) placed third and Dana Kamlah fourth.

John Stol won the ‘D’ Event final over Jason Wiese making Norm Rieu third and Melvin Johanson fourth.

Bentley always feeds participants well at their bonspiels.

Ray’s Grader Service sponsored free ribs and potato salad on Tuesday evening. Armin Mueller sponsored buffalo smokies on Wednesday night and the club supplied meat and cheese trays for the Thursday draws. There was the usual free coffee and candies.

BEAGLE Hazel Arlene Beagle of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with family at her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the age of 93 years.

Hazel was born October 26, 1921 to Minnie and Leo Herman at Lomond, Alberta. She had older siblings, Orville and Alice. They were raised on the Herman homestead at Armada and attended the Plateau School. Hazel also went to school at Vulcan and finished at the Armada School.

When she was nineteen, Hazel became ill with polio - it was a very serious disease and she was placed in quarantine with three others, also inflicted with polio. She came through this hard time, and on January 17, 1942 she married Raymond Beagle. They farmed at Armada and raised their family of four boys. It was during this time that many “stories” are shared about living on the farm. In 1978, they retired off the farm and moved into Lomond. They kept themselves busy with helping at the farm where Jack and Holly now lived, helping drive grandsons to hockey, and Hazel also worked at a small grocery store in Lomond. In 1999, they moved to Rocky Mountain House where family members were living. Ray passed away in 2007, and Hazel stayed in their home until she moved to the Westview Lodge and then to the Parkland Manor in Rimbey in 2014. Family was Hazel’s love and joy - she could never see too much of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved all of them unconditionally and with all her heart. She was so proud of her family and when one walked in the door, she made sure you were looked after and had lots to eat, and she never wanted anyone to put themselves out for her. Her family always came first.

Hazel will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four sons: Gary (Donna) Beagle of Rocky Mountain House; Don (Joyce) Beagle of Victoria, B.C.; Randy (Beth) Beagle of Sylvan Lake; and Jack (Holly) Beagle of Rimbey; as well as ten cherished grandchildren: Raymond (Carol), Tarina, Brent (Joanne), Lorne (Rhonda), Raylene (Bill), Shannon (Kyle), Randell (Josh), Chad (Michelle), Kent (Kathleen), and Cole (Francis); and nineteen great grandchildren: Donna, Shawn, Skylar (Allie), Tahnee (Pat), Talon, Kaden, Kya, Kolby, Joelle, Bryken, Keegan, Keston, Kacey, Tavish, Cameron, Hudson, Josie, Coleten, and Bryce. She is also lovingly survived by her brother, Orville Herman of Brooks; and her sister-in-law, Miss Hazel Beagle of Rocky Mountain House; in addition to many loving nieces and nephews, and many others who lovingly referred to her as their Grandmother. Hazel was predeceased by her beloved husband, Raymond in 2007; her granddaughter, Tammy Nadine in 1971; and one sister, Alice in 1935.

Interment will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Rocky Mountain House at a later date. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Lovina will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her beloved husband, Gordon; and her children, Diane (Marjan) Filipic of Thorsby; Lorena (Bill) Houghton of Ponoka; Donna (Glen) Szautner of Evansburg; and Norma-Jean (Fred) Ladwig of Red Deer; as well as thirteen treasured grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her special niece, Shirley Bard of Rimbey; numerous additional nieces and nephews; and a host of cherished friends. Lovina was predeceased by her parents; her daughter, Nancy; her grandson, Randall; six brothers and two sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Father Gabriel Udeh, Celebrant. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton. COOPER Mary Irene Cooper was born on March 5, 1930 in Lethbridge, Alberta, and passed away on November 30, 2014 in Red Deer at the age of 84 years after a brief illness.

Mary leaves behind her sister, Betty Barthalow of Red Deer; her daughter, Catherine (Mike) Prichuk of Sundre; her sons, Jack of Teepee Creek, Alberta; Dean (Irene) of Eaglesham, Alberta; and Kelly of Peace River, Alberta; her son of choice, Rodney (Cheryl) Letendre of Drayton Valley; and a half dozen grandkids.

Mary was always kind, infinitely generous, and forever gracious. And during those times when she found her children lacking in these qualities, she knew how to work the business end of a wooden spoon. We miss her.

Remembering his first heartbreak The basic pleasure of falling in love is invariably accompanied by a wide and vivid range of emotions including but not limited to apprehension, infatuation, exhilaration, acceptance, sacrifice and sometimes rejection and disappointment.

I am reminded of a line in a Cat Stevens song: Find a girl, settle down, if you want – you can Marry. Look at me I am old but I am happy.

The last word in that line (happy) is what anyone engaged in the process of falling in love focuses on and hopes for. The intensity of emotion facilitates the construction in your mind of a bliss-filled Kingdom where love conquers all, the sun shines all the time, friends are true, motives pure and you “get” every love song on the radio.

I was the king of that phantasmagoric kingdom and had only one candidate in mind for my queen…Donna. Even saying her name produced near – delirium.

We spent our days at the same institute and lived some distance from each other. I was determined to propose marriage at some point in the near future and decided that I would walk her home on some crystal clear winter day (Dr. Zhivago style)

There were a few impediments but I was certain that the quality of my genuine affection would outweigh them.

The opportunity to execute my plan presented itself one afternoon in the common area of the institute. She seemed very pleased to accept my offer to escort her home.

At the approximate midpoint of the journey, we were walking by a hockey rink and bolstered by adrenaline, I invited her to take a seat as I had this burning question that had to be answered. She declined my invitation to sit down but I felt that due to the momentous nature of the question and the fact that my legs lacked, at this moment, the structural integrity to support

my weight I decided to sit.

I looked lovingly into her soft brown eyes and said “will you marry me?”

When she said no, I could hardly believe it. Had she misheard me. No? No…? Did I ask the wrong question? Was I even speaking English? No? What on earth is going on here?

My mind reeled in a cascading confluence of words and emotions. As she turned and walked away, the reality of the rejection hit me like a stone. I knew there were no more fish in the sea and I was destined to live out my days – a solitary man.

Donna’s father was compassionate and understanding.

When he heard of my rejected proposal, he sought me out and advised me that if circumstances were different and Donna and I were a few years older with a more mature set of life experiences and viable long-range plans, our chances of success would be much greater.

I was encouraged to continue to cultivate a friendship with his daughter, finish grade two and postpone the burdens of married life.
