SHOPPING IS A BIG part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that lastminute shoppers may not have. The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and the chance to reduce your carbon footprint. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home. Local economy When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping local can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses. Community identity Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood iden-

tity, and that identity can create a stron- when buying from local businesses, as addition, buying locally makes it more ger sense of community among you and consumers can simply take their prod- convenient for friends and family memyour neighbors. In return their gifts. more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood. Uniqueness of gifts The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefit your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefitting your local economy. Customer service The accessibility of customer service is another C L O T H I N G oft-overlooked benefit of shopping locally. When buying from national chains, especially during the holi148 Lakeshore Drive (778) 489-5075 day season when such busistreetsmartclothes@gmail.com Salmon Arm nesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with customer service departments can be a trying exercise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or online can make the process of contacting customer service extremely frustrating. But such frustration is rare

I t ’s a h a h a f or B a h Hu m bu g GET READY FOR GAGS, hoots, belly laughs and giggles as Shuswap Theatre puts a musical Scrooge on stage. Even while Shuswap Theatre’s successful The Odd Couple was running, Bah, Humbug! was in rehearsal. A much-loved Christmas tradition is back, with a fun-filled musical pantomime based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It features all the familiar characters, including Ebenezer Scrooge, the ghost of Jacob Marley and the Cratchitt family, except that Tiny Tim is now a teenager with a bit of attitude. He thinks he’s funny, but his family is not so sure. But Shuswap families can be sure they’ll be entertained by the on-stage antics of Bah Humbug! The guest director is Paul Kirkwood-Hackett from Asparagus Theatre in Armstrong. He is supported by Jaeden Izik-Dzurko as pianist, with choral rehearsal assistance from Peter Blacklock. Randy Brogden and Darby McEachern-Corley are responsible for the set design. Mike Nash plays the principle female role – Scrooge’s old girlfriend, Belle, who is doing her best to care for London’s orphans. Scrooge comes to life in talented Jason

THE CANADIAN PACIFIC (CP) Holiday Train is on its way across Canada for the 16th year in a row. The brightly lit train left Montreal Nov. 26 and will make stops in several Shuswap communities, including Sicamous, Salmon Arm and Notch Hill on Monday, Dec. 15. CP Rail organizers are aiming to generate healthier donations this year as the train makes its way across North America raising food, money, and awareness for local food banks and food shelves. The online #HealthyDonations Challenge encourages patrons attending Holiday Train events to take a second glance when pulling food out of their cupboards to ensure their nonperishable donations are nutritious and heart-healthy. CP’s goal is to have 20,000 people take an online pledge to underscore how important it is that everyone has access to nutritious food. Anyone who wishes to participate may do so at You can show your commitment at http://bit.ly/1x6u4r8. Food banks and food shelves welcoming the Holiday Train to their community this year are also being asked to commit 10 percent or more of CP’s monetary donation to healthy food initiatives or purchases.

“We’re excited to once again see CP’s Holiday Train travel across the country in support of community food banks,” says Katharine Schmidt, executive director, Food Banks Canada. “When so many Canadians are struggling just to get enough food to eat, programs like this help to ensure so many families and individuals can access essential food.” The U.S. and Canadian trains will make stops in more than 150 communities as they travel across North America. The U.S. Holiday Train will travel across the U.S. Northeast and Midwest before its final show Dec. 17 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, while the Canadian train will travel west and wrap up its journey Dec. 18 in Port Coquitlam. Each Holiday Train event features performances by professional musicians that include holiday-themed songs, including the pop rock band Odds, Roxanne Potvin, Tracey

Brown and Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo fame) on the Canadian tour There’s no charge to attend a Holiday Train show, but patrons are asked to take a cash or non-perishable food donation. All money and food raised in a community stays there to help those in need locally. Local Salvation Army captains Sheldon and Sharon Feener say they are continually amazed by the giving nature of the people of Salmon Arm, and appreciate their support of the organization’s work in the community. “This years Healthy Donations Challenge set forth by CP Rail helps us as a community remember that while we are able to go to the grocery store and purchase foods that help to heal and aid our bodies, not everyone has that same opportunity,” says Sheldon. “While we are grateful for each and every donation that is given, we encourage everyone to think about #HealthyDonations this holiday

season.” The CP Rail Holiday Train arrives at the Lordco parking lot at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15 but organizer Chris Moore suggest people show up at 6. The Salmon Arm Masonic Lodge will be serving hot food and beverages including hotdogs and apple pies, apple cider and hot chocolate, all available by donation to the Salvation Army. “As we no longer have the bleachers, please bring a lawn chair if you require seating,” says Moore. “There will also be carol singing, free glow sticks for the kids and our firefighters will provide burn barrels to keep you warm.” As always, the Salvation Army will be accepting non-perishable food donations and cash donations. Salvation Army community services co-ordinator, just received a large donation of fruit juice and is most in need of protein – canned meat and fish, canned pork and beans and canned vegetables. “I have lots of pasta but very little pasta sauce,” he says. “And we’re good for cold cereal but people are asking for hot cereal like porridge with some raisins or nuts to add to it.”

r e h h e t p h e c c n r i l fect gift for a tea c o t w o H YOU’RE RUNNING DOWN your gift list, racing from work to the mall to pick up the kids. The best intentions in the spirit of the season have turned into a chore. Here’s how to take one decision off your roster. Teachers in publiclyfunded schools across Canada can now post a wish for what they really want. It’s not soap or coffee or another mug — the wishes are always aimed at enriching the learning experience for our children. For example, Mrs. Fennemore wanted levelled books for her kindergarten class in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Mr. Vaillant at St. Ignatius High School in Thunder Bay, Ontario, was hoping for portable recorders so his students could create soundscapes. And Ms. Fleming in Surrey, British Columbia, was looking for snap-together tools called littleBitskits to learn about circuitry. They posted their projects with MyClassNeeds.ca, a crowd-sourcing charitable organization that works to enhance the classroom experience. Friends

and supporters made online donations. No lineups or gift wrap involved. Think birthdays, weddings and corporate client appreciation gifts too. Mrs. Fennemore said her students were thrilled with the new books. “These resources will remain with kindergarten classes for years to come,” she adds, “helping to create new readers and to instill a love of reading with each new year.” Students in Mr. Vaillant’s class have created works of art with “found” sounds, from the chirp of a bird to the clang of a locker closing. Mr. Vaillant points out the benefits, “It is a wonderful way for students who are not drawn to playing instruments to experience the wonder of music.” Ms. Fleming was overwhelmed with the response in her school. “On the day I announced that ‘we had the technology’ (to borrow from the ‘6-million-dollar man’ phrase) to revive the Tech Club, I had 175 of our 225 student population want to join the learning excitement.” You can find that wow gift yourself and support a publicly-funded classroom by going to MyClassNeeds.ca.

If you choose a project with an outdoor environmental focus, a supplier called Copernicus Educational Prod-

ucts will provide 50 per cent matching funding. www.newscanada.com

WE’VE ALL FELT the pressure to attend every holiday movie, try every sweet goodie, and pile up all of our presents under the tree. Yet many parents find that it’s not the gifts their kids remember. Children most enjoy the traditions, the time spent together and the moments of connection with family, friends, and even complete strangers. “My kids can’t recall what was under the tree two years ago,” says Debbie Wolfe a mom in Toronto. “But they often talk about our annual trip to see the decorated shop windows downtown, or the refugee family we invited for Christmas dinner that year.” Here are five other ideas for

memorable, magical holidays: 1. Start a holiday tradition: Try sledding on Christmas Eve, making the cookies your grandmother made, or watching a holiday classic every weekend in December. 2. Open your heart: Invite a less fortunate family for a meal, or get your kids to send a gift to a family in a developing country. This can be done on the web site called World Vision Gifts. 3. Take in music: Whether it’s free holiday music at your city hall, or Christmas carols at a nearby church, the sounds of the season have a wonderful way of lifting spirits. 4. Set up mailboxes: Tape large envelopes to bedroom doors and drop in notes of fun and encouragement. Invite kids to cookie baking in the kitchen that afternoon, or count down the days

But the pressures of the holidays mean that for a lot of families in need, day-today reality becomes unmanageable during this time of year. Canadian charities do spectacular work for communities struggling both here and across the globe. Here are the ways three top Canadian charities are revolutionizing giving back this holiday season: 1. The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) – Working with community-level organizations, this foundation provides care and treatment for HIV/AIDS. How to help: Instead of expensive jewelry or extravagant household items, treat your loved ones to a gorgeous SLF printed or digital card and a donation in their name. Your contribution fights back against a pandemic that has ruined too many lives. 2.
