Recruitment task force adds another family physician to city Family physician Dr. Jordan Wolff has joined the team at Cranbrook’s Associate Clinic, marking another success for the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice’s physician
recruitment task force. A recent graduate of his family practice residency at the University of Alberta, Dr. Wolff moved to Cranbrook in late September accompanied by his wife and
children. In July, Dr. Karen Fordham joined the community. “I, along with my family, am very happy to be here,” says Dr. Wolff. “We look forward to making Cranbrook our
home.” “I am pleased to welcome Dr. Wolff to Cranbrook,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “The addition of a new doctor in the region means

greater accessibility to primary care for many residents needing a physician, and is a vital part of people achieving and maintaining good health.” The East Kootenay
Division of Family Practice initiated the physician recruitment task force as part of its A GP for Me work. A GP for Me is a joint initiative of the Government of BC and
Doctors of BC that aims to improve access to primary care and help British Columbians who want a family doctor to find one. The initiative is being implemented locally by divisions of family practice, including the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice, which are non-profit community-based groups of family doctors committed to improving primary care. The family physician recruitment task force is a collaboration of the East Kootenay Division, Interior Health Authority, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, the City of Cranbrook, the Regional District, and the College of the Rockies. The task force develops short-term solutions and long-term strategies to address community-wide physician vacancies. The task force’s Red Carpet Committee is one of those strategies. It helps family doctors decide whether the community is a good match for them and their families. Visiting doctors have the opportunity to tour local clinics and regional recreation amenities, and meet with representatives from schools and other community organizations. The task force also organizes a welcoming event where visiting doctors can meet with community leaders, local family physicians, and others, depending upon their interest. “It is wonderful to have Dr. Wolff join the Associate Medical Clinic,” says Dr. Ross Dawson, Division lead for recruitment and retention and practising physician at the clinic. “He fills a need in the clinic as well as the community.” About the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice The East Kootenay Division of Family Practice is a non-profit society whose membership comprises 102 family doctors who support patients in the communities of Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Kimberley, Golden, and Invermere. The Division has received A GP for Me funding to improve the local primary care system. www.divisionsbc. ca/east-kootenay

RADIANT COMPLEXION True beauty starts with a radiant complexion. As well as your daily routine, try a microdermabrasion, which is a treatment that exfoliates the skin and stimulates collagen production, giving an incredible glow to your complexion. Apply a progressive selftanning cream once or twice a week for a natural looking tan. GLAMOROUS HAIR Be sure to spoil your hair as well. The key word: hydration. When next at the hairdresser’s, be sure to ask for a natural oil treatment, the ultimate for a glamorous mane of hair. Where hairstyles are concerned, the boyish look is back as well as the fishtail braid. Otherwise, lots of volume and ultra-smooth texture are musts. THE LATEST IN MAKEUP For holiday makeup, a shopping trip is on the order of the day so that you have all the articles necessary for creating the very latest in looks: coppery, smoky eyes; cashmere lips (coloured lipstick with a softened effect); the nude look with tones on the cold side; golden eye liner; and accentuated eyebrows. DAZZLING SMILE Lastly, think about a whitening treatment for your teeth in order to restore that dazzling smile. GET FIT After the copious meals and late nights of the holidays it can be pretty hard to return to a your first colour healthy lifestyle. Luckily, by resuming healthy service with habits and some form of regular physiaward-winning stylist eating cal exercise we can repair the damage to our bodies.

Premier Clark says surplus will be used to pay off past deficits fares, BC Hydro rate increases and other charges, and it’s time to put some back to the people who need it. Her party has been pressing for removal of a clawback of child support payments from social assistance and disability recipients, an estimated annual cost of $17 million. “It’s not simply people who are the recipients of child maintenance dollars, but in fact all British Columbians see
how unfair it is that that money is clawed back from children,” James said. Another priority is to increase post-secondary education funds, which are looking at one of a series of budget cuts next year despite the government’s high-profile jobs plan, James said. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond, meanwhile, turned away calls from retiring B.C. Federation of Labour

Premier Christy Clark listens as Finance Minister Mike de Jong presents the 2014-15 budget last February. The expected surplus has grown to more than $400 million since then.

by Tom Fletcher Premier Christy Clark and her ministers are fending off calls to increase spending on pressing social priorities as the financial picture brightens for the B.C. government. With the bills tallied for the first half of the fiscal year, the province is forecasting a surplus of $444 million by next spring, about twice as much as was projected in last February’s budget. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the improvement was helped by a strengthening U.S. economy, despite commodity slumps that have produced declining lumber and coal revenues. Both de Jong and Clark said their highest priority is to repay about $5 billion in debt accumulated during a string of deficits before the budget was balanced in 2013. “Like any family that’s been through tough times, the first thing you need to do when you get back to finding a job and making an income again, is to pay off your credit cards,” Clark said in an interview. “We’re going to pay off these credit cards that got charged up after 2008 pretty heavily.” NDP children and family critic Carole James said the government has achieved surpluses with the help of increases to medical premiums, ferry
president Jim Sinclair to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. After a series of increases brought the B.C. minimum up to $10.25 by 2012, Bond said the issue is being monitored, along with factors like youth unemployment and inflation. “You’re certainly not going to see us move to $15 an hour in the short term,” she said.

Liquor changes could push up prices B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher When the B.C. government announced its latest changes to liquor distribution, the reaction was not what I expected. Private store representatives complained bitterly that the government is allowing further expansion of fridges and “cold rooms” in selected government liquor stores, and longer operating hours that include more Sunday openings. Those hours, along with non-union staff, are the private
stores’ big advantages as things stand in B.C.’s hybrid liquor retailing system. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union didn’t seem at all perturbed that state-run stores’ key advantage was also going to be gone effective April 1. That would be preferential wholesale pricing, in which the government’s monopoly wholesaler sells to them at cost and to private stores at higher rates. How much higher? Liquor Distribution Branch officials were
carefully vague on that, and it varies depending on which of the 22 wholesale categories you look at. They released a graph that suggests the average wholesale cost to government stores might be going up 10 to 15 per cent to create a “level playing field” with private stores. That wholesale price difference is the main reason private stores have generally higher retail prices. And the majority of the province’s revenue of nearly $1 billion a year comes from this monopoly wholesale business, where the hidden tax is coyly termed a “markup.” When the new, simplified system comes in
next spring, a bottle of hard liquor will have a “mark-up” of 124 per cent. That’s right, LDB more than doubles the price with its wholesale liquor tax. And if it’s premium booze, anything valued at more than $21 a litre will get an extra luxury tax on top of that. Coolers and ciders will see a 73 per cent mark-up. Wines are taxed at 89 per cent, with extra luxury tax on premium wines. Beer gets a per-litre tax with ascending rates for small, medium and large breweries. Then of course there is federal and provincial sales tax applied to all of it. Cheers! Premier Christy Clark acknowledged that the
first guiding principle of this overhaul is to keep that government revenue coming. The new BCGEU president, Stephanie Smith, doesn’t sound like your bullhorn-toting socialist of yore. She insists she’s gungho to compete head to head with those private interlopers and get back some lost market share, particularly on the high-volume cold beer sales. The union has another ace in the hole. Its current contract stipulates that LDB can’t close stores. In some small towns there are government stores that lose money, particularly since they’ve had more private competition. But at least for
the duration of this BCGEU contract, the government retail arm will continue to operate in some places as a perverse social program, subsidizing retail clerk jobs that pay nearly twice what private retail pays. And let’s face it, running a till at a liquor store is not rocket surgery. Private and government store staff have to take the same training, and liquor inspector sting operations have increased vigilance on ID checks in all stores. With higher wholesale prices applied to government stores, this kind of artificial support will cost more. The only way LDB could maintain it with-
out subsidizing it from the wholesale windfall would be to raise retail prices. The LDB says this new simplified system is “not intended to impact consumer pricing.” Note the careful choice of words. Oh, one last thing. There is another new tax in the works. It will be applied to higheralcohol beverages, in an effort to reduce adverse health effects. Annual Chamber Turkey Drive looking to help this holiday season Submitted The annual Chamber of Commerce Turkey Drive will be underway on Thursday December 4th. This is the 4th year for this fundraiser that provides financial support to both the Salvation Army and the Cranbrook Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program. The Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce hopes to raise over $25,000 this year to support these two great organizations. The Chief Turkey Chair (CTC) is Jason Wheeldon who spearheaded the original event, and is back at the helm with his cochair Warren Bedell and several of their Jr Poults who have been out in the community this past couple of weeks driving pre-pledges from local business and residents. Our Guest Celebrity program this year has several residents helping out including Nella Rounsville, Denise Pallesen, Heather Smith, Lona Williams, Micheil Hardy, Chris Thom, Tom Shypitka & Liz Chaney seeking pledges for a Turkey. “There is definitely a rivalry brewing from our celebrity pledgers who want to make sure the need in our
community is fulfilled and also to be the top pledge earner.” said Wheeldon. Last year Nella Rounsville won the friendly competition and this year there is heated competition. The Turkey Drive concept is simple, residents of the community can pledge a turkey (a donation of $20). The Chamber of Commerce will collect the pledges and remit the proceeds to the Salvation Army and the Food Bank as the revenues are collected. The revenues received will be utilized by the organizations to prepare the Christmas Hampers. The community is invited to take part in the one day drive on Thursday December 4th by listening to the Drive FM and calling into the Chamber of Commerce 250 426 5914 to pledge their donation. Captain Kirk from the Salvation Army will be on hand during the one day event and “thanks the Community for their past support” and hopes to see this year’s turkey drive rally as the need in our community is still there. Between the Cranbrook Food Bank and the Salvation Army over 750 Christmas Hampers will be prepared for residents &
families in our community. The Hampers include more than just a turkey but all of the accessories and meal accompaniment’s to ensure a festive family dinner for all in our community. Last year over $27,000 was raised which set a new record for the Turkey Drive and this year the organizers want to set a new record. “This Fundraiser is definitely near and dear to Karin (Penner’s) heart and this is her last year with the Chamber and we want to send her out with a bang.” Quotes Cathy Bauer one of the staff who administers the pledge drive. The Turkey Drive got its start when Penner, Wheeldon and friends found out there was a shortage in the community and that some families would not be receiving Christmas Hampers. Employing the Chamber of Commerce network volunteers & chamber staff phone lines were lit up and the need in our community was fulfilled within 5 hours. The Turkey Drive continues to this day because the need in our community is still there. The Chamber invites the entire community on Thursday December
Elk Valley water plan approved
MLA Bill Bennett. Submitted The Elk Valley Water Quality Plan, developed to address increasing levels of selenium in the Elk Valley’s rivers, was approved last week. A project board, comprised of Teck, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Energy and Mines as well as the Ktunaxa Nation and Wildsight, established the plan. “Over the last decade, companies and people who work in the fed-
Photo Black Press
eral fisheries department and the Minitry of Environment provincially have realized that [selenium] is a component that needs to be measured and the content in the water was going up,” said MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett acknowledged that in moving forward with this plan, the board had to find ways to balance Teck’s financial stability with problem-solving action. “We’ve managed to find a way to create a plan that I think is going
to do what the public expects us to do but also enable this mining operation to continue to employ all the people that they do in the Elk Valley,” said Bennett. He added, “If the company goes out of business and if the government drives the company out of business, it becomes the duty of the government to take over managing this problem. The challenge is not to drive the company into bankruptcy but to push them to get this done as quickly as possible.” The plan will include Teck investing $600 million over the next five years into water treatment plants. One such plant at the Line Creek Operations, which cost the company $100 million, is still undergoing investigation in response to the death of 34 fish. “It’s a long-term project,” admitted Bennett, “it’s not something that’s going to happen in a year or two or perhaps even in a decade.”

OUTDOOR EDUCATION 12
The Mount Baker Outdoor Education 12 students would like to extend a huge thank you to many people in the community who give us support. This Saturday, Joey and Mike from The Choice and many other outdoor enthusiasts helped us raise over $1000.00 to fund new equipment purchases and future trips. Kootenay Savings, Sidekick Stickers, Top of the World Treatment Centre, Fun Hogz and High Country Sports contributed to our bake sale and silent auction. Special Thanks also to the Key City Theatre staff and volunteers and Dave Hill. The MBSS Outdoor Education Program is for students in Grades 11 and 12 and provides a foundation for youth to recreate safely in the outdoors and to explore career options related to the outdoors / environment. We are lucky to have incredible places nearby to learn diverse skills such as backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, xcountry skiing, snowshoeing and winter camping! If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact Leigh Cormier at (250) 426 -5241 or leigh.cormier@sd5.bc.ca.

Michelle Sartorel, Principal at Gordon Terrace Elementary School , approached Paul Knipe last spring to see about building a Buddy Bench. She explained that the bench would be placed in the playground at GT. The idea was that if someone was looking for a friend, or wanted to talk to someone, he/she would sit on the bench. Paul approached his Adapted Technology class at Mount Baker Secondary and the Educational Assistants who work in this program to see if they would be interested in getting involved in the project. All were enthusiastic! Mr. Brian Lutz donated the material. The process involved designing, building and finishing the bench. An important aspect of the Adapted Technology program is helping students develop a sense of the importance of giving back to the community. This project has demonstrated this idea very well!

Our family pot-luck supper and kitchen party was a huge hit. More than a hundred people attended and we had a wonderful evening of food, fun, music and dance. We will make sure to keep you posted for our next party. We were fortunate to be allowed the use of the brand new Gathering Place at the College for a reception following the Métis Flag Raising. It is a lovely facility, and we really enjoyed being there. Colette Trudeau, the Youth Minister from Métis Nation B.C. was here last week from Vancouver. She was on a tour of the Kootenays, and got together with the Wild Warriors, our Aboriginal student leadership group, for a needs assessment survey. Colette is always a great guest and very supportive of our youth. The students are looking forward to an upcoming evening of artistic expression with Marissa Phillips, and they are also undertaking a signage project for MBSS. The aim is to have signs in the school pointing out key places not only in English, but also in the Ktunaxa language.
Nine students take part in We Day Alberta After hard work and dedication, on November 3rd, nine Mount Baker Secondary students were able to go to We Day Alberta, an inspirational and empowering event for youth who have committed themselves to a year of global and local change through fundraising and shedding light on the social issues we face in our world today. Through Mount Baker’s Leadership class, these students will continue on with the energy they received from We Day to help the need in Cranbrook, and to empower women in Ecuador by giving them the tools to create their own income and support their families.

Can you help this woman find her biological father?

Julie Creasy (above) is searching for her biological father, who could be residing in the area. (right) Sandra (Erickson) Birtwistle was the biological mother of Creasy. by Brian Coombs Knowing who your parents are is a simple comfort that most of us enjoy. For a current Salmon Arm resident, trying to find that comfort is occupying much of her time. Julie Creasy was born in Victoria, but conceived in Cranbrook. “I was adopted,” said Creasy. “I knew that my whole life.” When she was 18 or 19, with the support of her adoptive parents, Creasy began to look for her birth parents. After finding a search angel – a person who looks up people’s genealogy online – she was able to find who her birth mother was. “Her birth name was Sandra, maiden name Erickson and her married name was Birtwistle, which was not my birth father’s name,” said Creasy. She found out that her birth mother had died a couple of years ago and that she had two other children, about 10 years older than herself. “Their names are Tracy and Troy and we are still in contact. I went down to meet them and Sandra’s mom Pearl, who passed away this past April. While Pearl decided not to divulge much information on Creasy’s birth father, she did say that her mother met her father, and decided to move to Cranbrook. It was here that she
became pregnant, but the father decided not to have a family with her. Because of this, Creasy’s birth mother moved back to Victoria. After a while, and after her grandmother Pearl had tried raising her, Creasy was put up for adoption. In researching her father, she came up with a document that tells precious little about him and his family. It states: “The baby’s father was 5’6” tall and of average weight. He had fair colouring, fair hair and blue eyes. He was of a medium build and was in good health. He was employed working with his family in their business and had started with the family when he left high school. He was talented in working in agricultural endeavours and was also musical. The paternal grandfather, who was in his early sixties, was 5’10” tall and of average weight. He had fair colouring, dark brown hair and brown eyes. He continued to work in the family business and was in quite good health although he had had a heart attack. The paternal grandmother, who was also in her sixties, was 5’ tall and was overweight. She was fair in colouring and had light brown to fair hair. She seemed to be in good health.” If you have information about Creasy’s birth father, please

Christmas Trees
1. A Long Tradition. Using evergreens to celebrate the winter season has a long tradition in many - especially Northern European - cultures. The first decorated Christmas tree as we know it today, is said to have been set up in Latvia in 1510. The first written reference to Christmas trees was made 20 years later in Germany. 2. Light it Up! Since the middle of the 17th century, people have been using small candles to light a Christmas tree. In the 1880s, Thomas Edison’s assistant came up with the idea to attach electric lights to trees and light strings were first mass-produced in 1890. Just a few years later, large department stores in the US started setting up big, decorated and illuminated trees. 3. It’s Not Real, Or Is It? The first artificial trees were made in Germany during the 19th century from dyed feathers and wire. Brushes and aluminum were materials used in early manufacturing in North America. Today, most artificial trees are made from fire-retardant PVC plastic. 4. Tried and True. Overall in Canada, freshcut Christmas trees are still more popular than artificial trees, although the gap seems to be getting smaller each year. While early settlers were cutting their trees in the nearby forests, today most fresh-cut trees come from plantations. It takes between six and ten years and constant grooming to grow them to perfection. 5. Exploring the Benefits of Fir. Named for Scottish botanist and explorer David Douglas, the Douglas Fir has become one of the most popular trees for the holidays. It is liked for the dense, bushy shape and fine, soft needles that have a distinct, long-lasting pine-like scent. This tree is a very economic option, especially if you want to hang lots of lights. 6. More Scottish Discoveries. The Fraser Fir is named after yet another Scottish botanist, John Fraser who was exploring the expanse of North America in the 1700s. The branches grow more upward on this fir, giving a perfect view of the silvery underside. The needles are very soft and don’t prick easily when hanging ornaments, making this a great choice for a Christmas tree; in fact, Fraser Fir has been used more times as the White House Christmas tree than any other type of tree. 7. I Will Never Drop! The Nordmann Fir has achieved the status of the ultimate non-needledrop Christmas tree. It is a very symmetrical and graceful tree; its shiny, bright green needles are slightly flattened, soft and delicate to the touch. Nordmann Firs originate in the region around the Black Sea, Turkey and the Caucasus in Russia. 8. Don’t Let Me Freeze! For better needle retention, cultured trees should not be frozen. If the temperature is below -6° C, you may want to bring an old blanket to wrap around your tree when you get it home. And whatever you do, do not leave it sitting outside in freezing conditions as freezing is the number one reason for needle drop. 9. Never Without a Drink. Once your choice is made and you get your tree home, make sure to re-cut the bottom and immediately immerse it in hot water. You will be surprised how much water your tree will take up in the first 24 hours, so keep it well watered and never let your tree dry out. If the reservoir should run dry, you will have to make a new cut to get the tree drinking again. 10. Needle Protection. If you have an exceptionally dry house, you can apply an anti-desiccant spray to your tree to help keep moisture in the needles. This product is all natural, derived from pine oil, and can protect your wreaths and other winter greens as well.

Giving the gift of sport this season Submitted Sport giving is in the spotlight this year on Giving Tuesday as the Canadian Paralympic Committee officially launches its “From Playground to Podium” fundraising campaign, inviting Canadians to give a tax-deductible gift of sport. Funds raised through the campaign will support programs and activities that have a lasting impact at the initial point of contact with aspiring athletes. To contribute, please visit Paralympic.ca/ donate. “Only a very small percentage of Canadians with a disability are active in organized sport, compared to the general population, and that is a fact we are working hard to improve,” said CEO Karen O’Neill. “To have a podium full of Canadian athletes, we need a playground full of participants.” Funds raised will help the Canadian Paralympic Committee enhance its world-leading programs, which range from introductory “get involved” awareness programs, to school resources, to adapted sports equipment purchases and many more. A list is at Paralympic.ca/donate. Top athletes and corporations are already on board, including Sochi 2014 para-alpine skiing gold medallist Josh Dueck, as well as four-time Paralympic swimmer and Toronto 2015 Chef de Mission Elisabeth WalkerYoung. Corporate partners, including PetroCanada and Pfizer Canada, have pledged to match donations up to $30,000. “I am who I am due to how I was raised and through my participation in Paralympic sport,” said WalkerYoung. “I may have medals to my name, have stood on international podiums, but it wouldn’t have happened had I not climbed monkey bars with my sister or played in gym class. It’s about being active. Not everyone will be a Paralympian, but everyone deserves to be able to dream to be one.” “This campaign is important to me,” added Dueck, “as the CPC has played a sig-
nificant role in my personal development as an athlete, since I was first injured 10 years ago. Through my journey, the power of sport has helped me to transcend many perceived barriers, both physical and emotional. Because of the opportunities created through sport, my story is one of inspiration, rather than tragedy.” The Canadian P a r a l y m p i c Committee’s quest to be at the top of Paralympic podiums is fueled by a belief that outstanding performances by high performance athletes with a disability will change attitudes and inspire greater levels of physical activity for people with disabilities in Canada. The From Playground to Podium campaign will create opportunity, provide leadership and inspire excellence. It’s also timely, as tomorrow, Dec. 3, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. “This is an investment that all Canadians can take pride in,” said O’Neill. “A gift of sport may be just what is needed to nurture a future potential Paralympic champion. Our sincere thanks to all our supporters.” The campaign runs until Dec. 31, 2014. About the Canadian Paralympic Committee The Canadian Paralympic Committee is a non-profit, private organization with 25 member sports organizations dedicated to strengthening the Paralympic Movement. The Canadian Paralympic Committee’s vision is to be the world’s leading Paralympic nation. Its mission is to lead the development of a sustainable Paralympic sport system in Canada to enable athletes to reach the podium at the Paralympic Games. By supporting Canadian high performance athletes with a disability and promoting their success, the Canadian Paralympic Committee inspires all Canadians with a disability to get involved in sport through programs delivered by its member organizations. A Q and A about touring with The Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows a programming genius and he does it all, on songs like Transmission or Temptation with foot pedals and two keyboards. Jeff has learned to make his guitar rig fatter and fatter and I’ve learned to make my drums sound bigger and bigger. Experience counts too. It’s a pretty thick musical experience we have with
many layers. Q: What is your favourite part of touring your new album? A: Canadian fans get a chance to see what we’ve been doing in Australia, for one. We also get to be part of the cusp or a resurgence in real rock music. There’s been a void of that and bands like Monster Truck play by their

own rules and I love it. Fighting the good fight and not going by what’s popular on the radio. If you do live shows and you are good, people will come. We’re in the happiest place we’ve ever been. Musically we’re stoked, we’re playing better live than we’ve ever played and we are super charged and very
grateful. It’s sometimes been a bumpy ride in the past, but I remind myself how many people would want to be in our shoes? That opened our eyes and now we are thankful to everyone around us. That’s our motto. And when people come to the show, when we are on stage, we own it.

The Tea Party is playing at the Key City Theatre on Monday, December 8. by Brian Coombs Music is a part of everyone’s lives. For some of us, it is as important as breathing and for all of us, music is one of the metres we use to divide our memories. The Tea Party, coming to Cranbrook on December 8, at the Key City Theatre with their new album The Ocean at the End, is one of those long-lasting bands whose songs are the background music to memories going back more than two decades. Recently, The Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows had a little time to chat before hitting the road. Q: The band has been producing music for a long time now. Have you seen any changes in your audience? A: Most of our original audience is out there in the seats and many of them are now bringing their kids. I always heard about that, and I
never thought I’d be in that position. Q: Speaking of changes, the band split up in 2005, reforming in 2011 with the original members. What’s it like being back together and touring a new album? A: We call that a hiatus. Looking back on the horrible past with rose-coloured glasses it is hard to believe, but the shows are going so well. It’s strange how it all worked out but The Tea Party has never been anything but the three of us. We’ve played with other people, with orchestras, but in the end, it’s Stuart, Jeff and I. Getting back together was a two stage process/ The first was just seeing if we could still get along and it went off well. Then we tried writing. We went to Brisbane and hunkered down for two weeks and did three or four tracks. We were happy. I suggested we go back to Windsor and we spent two or three weeks
there and everything came together. More guitar driven music, more melody, more blues and riftiness. As for touring, it’s hard to tour, but honestly, we had that six-year lull and that was the darkest part of my life - ever. When the band broke up, I soon realized how much a part of my personality as a human was interwoven with being the drummer of The Tea Party. I’m more than just a drummer or a songwriter. The band is part of my fibre. And we’re all actually improving. I know I’m a better drummer now than 15 years ago. Q: The Tea Party has always had a bigger sound than you would expect for a three-person band, but the sound seems even larger for this album. Cass Corridor, from the latest album, comes to mind. How do you accomplish that? A: We have to give kudos to Stuart, the human octopus. He’s

Changes to Range Act now in force Submitted
Changes made to the Range Act and Range Act regulation to improve the management of B.C.’s rangeland will come into force today, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson has announced. The regulatory changes reflect a commitment made in the BC Jobs Plan and a recommendation of the Ranching Task Force to improve the regulatory framework for range tenure holders. The changes to the Range Act regulation: * streamline the process for approving agreements (permits and licences) so vacant Crown range can be allocated more quickly and efficiently; * simplify the fee structure and eliminate some fees; * improve business certainty for range operators by allowing
longer terms on tenures, and also allow the conversion of grazing permits issued prior to 2004 to grazing licences; and * enable the conversion of grazing leases to grazing licences, providing tenure holders more flexibility to manage their businesses. The changes to the Range Act regulation will also give licence holders and other agreement holders more freedom to manage their operations by removing the requirement for operators to obtain ministry approval before selling their excess hay production. The changes will also allow a holder of multiple tenures to more easily consolidate or subdivide those tenures. Ranching operations are typically family-run businesses that have been in operation for several generations and are the backbone of many rural communities.

Mazda MX-5 2015 Jeep Renegade Over the last few years Mazda has been introducing There is no question that the merger of Fiat and vehicles with its new Skyactiv technology but there is Chrysler has helped to introduce many new vehicles. one car that will signify the culmination of all the things The small car segment is a perfect example; the Fiat Mazda does well, the next generation MX-5 (Miata). 500 and its variations has been a plus The MX-5 will come in 2015 as a 2016 for Chrysler’s bottom line. Built in Europe model and all eyes are on Mazda to see on the Fiat 500L platform, this smaller what it can deliver. The bodywork is more Jeep Renegade replaces the Compass dramatic and having seen it in person, and Patriot models. Powered by either the dimensions look fanatic but the new a 160hp, 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder front grille might take a while to adapt too. The two-seat cockpit is roomier, thanks to or a larger 184hp, 2.4L 4-cylinder, Jeep claims that this compact crossover is a wider body and longer wheelbase but the overall length is 105mm shorter and still a capable vehicle because of two by Zack Spencer available all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. 20mm lower. Engine automatic transmission. output has not been announced, neither has the price, Styling is all-American; the signature Jeep grille is married perfectly into the boxy design, as too are other Jeep but expect the car to be competitive with the 2015 model on price. styling cues. The interior is has a rugged, yet upscale design that features all of Jeep’s latest technology, Ford Explorer including the award winning Uconnect infotainment The sixth generation Ford Explorer will arrive in 2015 system. Pricing has not been announced but expect it as a 2016 model, now with new 2.3L EcoBoost engine shortly as it is due at dealerships very soon. available on the base and XLT trim. This replaces the older 2.0L Ecoboost and provides a 270hp, a 13 per cent bump over the last version. The 290hp 3.5L V6 is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. Ford claims that styling is the number one purchase consideration so the shape was retained but new grille and LED headlamps help refresh the look.

Honda HR-V Coming in 2015 is another SUV, smaller than the CR-V, helping to define the new subcompact SUV market. This little runabout is built off the excellent Honda Fit platform and will include many of the features that make that car a standout. The first is the interior of the HR-V. It will also feature Honda’s Magic Seats that flip
and fold for amazing versatility. The same 1.8L 4-clinder engine with 138hp will power this vehicle, either with FWD or AWD, through a continuously variable transmission or 6-cpeed manual. Pricing will be introduced closer to the introduction this coming spring. Built in Mexico, the HR-V will give Honda the same leg up that the original CR-V did for the small SUV segment. Chevrolet Volt It might surprise many people that the best selling electric car in Canada is the Chevrolet Volt, not the sexy Tesla Model S. There are many reasons for this, mainly the fact that the Volt provides all-electric transportation for 65 kms but with the aid of a small 4-cylinder generator to extend the range over 300 kms. This car has all of the upside of an electric car with none of the range limiting restrictions. In 2015, Chevrolet will introduce the second generation of Chevrolet Volt, one that hopes to improve on the usability of the car in terms of comfort and electric driving range. General Motors will showcase the next generation car in January at the Detroit Auto Show and the company’s CEO has stated that the new car “will store more energy in its battery pack with fewer cells, yet go further on a charge.” General Motors claims that 80 per cent of current Volt owners commute entirely on electric power, so any improvement to range will help increase this number. The Volt isn’t a huge volume seller for General Motors but this new model will help the company to showcase what it can do technologically. General Motors has the capability to produce some the most advanced cars on the road.

Five new vehicles under $25K Thanks to the use of highstrength steel, it’s more rigid, but also safe, with better handling. Though the Golf has grown in size it has dropped
in weight by up to 35.8 kg/79 pounds (depending on model.) An all-new, 1.8L directinjected turbocharged engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 184 pound power it-feet of torque. The shape and design elements remain as defined, as ever, with a distinctive C-pillar and roofline framing classic Golf side windows, but the striking new front end and steeply sloped hood leave no doubt this is an all-new model. Subaru Legacy ($23,495) The all-new Subaru Legacy will pleasantly surprise those in need of a mid-size sedan with all-wheel drive. Priced under $24K, its trunk accommodates for 425L, there’s room for five, and its 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine produces 175 horsepower. On the base model, you have the choice of a 6-speed manual or an available Lineartronic CVT with paddle shifters and manual mode. One of the weakest points of the Legacy was probably the interior. For 2015, it’s significantly updated. Its infotainment system also receives a much needed revamping. Inside the entry-level Legacy 2.5i you’ll find an AM/FM stereo with SiriusXM satellite radio, a Radio Data Broadcast System, an in-dash CD player, a 6.2-inch multi-function touchscreen display, Subaru STARLINK connectivity with smartphone integration, a rear-view camera. Furthermore, the multi-touch display offers swipe and scrolling gestures, similar to smartphones and tablets. MINI Cooper ($20,990) MINI’s street legal, go kartlike Cooper is now in its third generation and better than before. This pint-sized 3-door can be outfitted with a choice of two new engines: either a 3cylinder engine with a peak output of 134 horsepower or, if you move up to the S trim, you’ll get a 4-cylinder engine with an output of 189. You can match either engine with either a 6-speed manual or an available 6-speed automatic. And as the MINI Cooper grows up, it also grows in dimensions. It’s 114 mm longer, 44 mm wider and 7 mm higher than its predecessor. Honda Fit ($14,495) Unveiled at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, the all-new, five-passenger, five-door vehicle comes with style and flair. And just because it doesn’t have a huge price tag, it doesn’t mean you don’t get some pretty great standard features. Those include things like: Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-angle rearview camera,

with push-button start, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, Honda’s exclusive LaneWatch display and a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen in-
terface with HondaLink smartphone connectivity. The 2015 Fit marks the debut of an all-new directinjected 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine. It produces 130 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 114 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. Engine output is increased by 13 horsepower and 8 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing engine For those who love the versatility of Honda’s exclusive Magic Seats, they continue through this generation. It provides an amazing 1492.3 L of cargo space when the second row seats are folded flat. Nissan Micra ($9,998) It’s small and comes with a small price tag, but expect big things from the all-new Nissan Micra. At one of Canada’s lowest MSRPs – it competes directly with the Mitsubishi Mirage for
that title – it’s amazing what you can get for so little. The base model comes with manual windows and a manual transmission. It handles quite well and the cabin isn’t particularly loud when driving at highway speeds. The Micra is designed to not only meet or exceed Canadian safety regulations, but exceed them. Micra’s standard safety systems include the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) (includes front supplemental air bags, front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS). Under its hood is a 1.6L, 4-cylinder engine that produces 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. Okay, it’s not a lot but certainly enough to get

Pickups pick up major sales across the country By Ian Harwood Pickup trucks continue to push new sales records every year and with more and more advancements in technologies and lightweight materials, we are witnessing a dramatic change to the automotive industry. The 2015 Ford F-150 is a reinvention of North America’s most popular pickup.
It is 317 kilograms (700lbs) lighter, due to its aluminum body. It can tow up to 500 more kilograms (1,100lbs) and carry up to 240 more kilograms (530lbs) of cargo. The other benefit of losing all this weight is the fuel economy numbers, projected to be five to 20 percent better gas mileage. Four engine choices, 2.7 litre EcoBoost V6 delivering 385 horsepower

The 2015 Ram 1500 Diesel features a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 with an eight-speed TorqueFlite transmission, delivering an impressive 7.1 L/100 km highway fuel economy, powers. The Ram also includes active grille shutters to improve airflow for improved aerodynamics. There is also an airbag option available that can lower the ride height to create less drag. In Canada, Ram has maintained a strong following and with a diesel engine offering, the light truck market just became more interesting. The 2015 GMC Canyon has breathed new life into the midsize pickup market. This vehicle is equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and is mated with a six speed manual transmission, with a six-speed automatic available as an option. attention, especially on the west coast where midsize trucks were so popular. The 2015 Chevy Silverado HD marches in with an all new exterior styling designed around improving airflow, which helps the 6.6-litre Duramax turbo diesel or the 6.0-litre Vortex V8 maintain full power during heavy towing and higher temperatures. Auto grade braking and diesel exhaust braking help keep towing in check on those steep hills. Starting on a hill is no problem thanks to the hill start assist that holds the brakes until you press the accelerator. The trailer sway control automatically senses if a trailer is swaying and brings it back in line by applying both the truck’s and trailer’s brakes. The rear bumper has steps integrated into each corner making it easier to access the pickup’s box. The 2015 Toyota Tundra is equipped with a 5.7-litre i-force V8 engine producing 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque can tow up to 4,760 kg (10,500 lb). The Tundra went through a complete makeover last year with dramatic changes to the body. The grille is much larger and gives the truck a more aggressive look. The 1794 Edition is a Western themed truck that features 20” chrome clad alloy wheels, chrome surround grille with 2 bar silver inserts, a chrome and silver bumper, 1794 Edition badging, power moonroof and a heavy duty towing package. The Tundra tailgate opens very easily with the hydraulic assist and can close with as little as two fingers. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

When it comes to picking a shade to best represent your vehicular product, sometimes silver or a black just won’t do. There were some standout hues on vehicles displayed at the recent LA Auto Show, goodness knows which, if any of them, will make it your local showrooms. Here are a few vehicles that not only had flair, but the paintwork to match. 2015 Ford Edge If the name “Electric Spice” doesn’t grab your attention, then the actual colour itself will. You could label it as bright gold. But not a gaudy gold. Yes, it’s bright, and probably will repulse some crossover shoppers, but it doesn’t look half bad on the 2015 Ford Edge. 2015 Chevrolet Spark Lime and Electric Blue are just some colours you will find on Chevrolet’s pint-sized cars. While they might not attract your gaze because of their size, they can certainly catch your eye because of their electrifying tones.
UP TO
2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA While you might not be able to option your new MercedesBenz GLA out with this paintwork, it’s pretty darn cool. Mr. Brainwash, an LA-based but world-renowned street artist, partnered with Mercedes-Benz to create a one-of-a-kind GLA crossover that toured eight cities. Aside from it being awesome, you can see that the paint literally got everywhere. 2015 Dodge Charger and Challenger Don’t call me baby, even if it might be blue. The head-
CRANBROOK North Star Motors 250-489-4711 turning colour I’m referring to is the B5 Bly that was draped over Dodge’s two new models: the Challenger and Charger. You can see it from miles away, and whether you option it out on the sedan or coupe, you’re bound to get some attention. That’s if your HEMI isn’t doing its job! 2015 Nissan Juke Love it or hate it, the Nissan Juke is here to stay. And rightfully so. If you can get past its quirky looks, it’s quite a fun vehicle to drive. But what would a Juke be without some

OBITUARY
Bernadette Marie Agnes Caron (nee Boissonneault) 1929 - 2014 On Tuesday, November 25, 2014 Bernadette passed away peacefully with her family by her side. She was born in Timmins, Ontario on December 6, 1929. Dementia is cruel, heartbreaking and dehumanizing. We lost her twice in this life but not forever. We have no words to describe her strength and her love for family life and all it's creation. Bernadette is survived by her son John Claude, Donald (Kolleen), Maurice (Elizabeth), Denis, Laurent (Linda) and daughter Christine (Tom), many grandchildren, her sister Marie-Jean and brothers John and Marcel. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest, brother Rene and daughter-in-law Ann Marie. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Witten all the staff at the F. W. Green Memorial Home for all the love and care given to our Mother the past five years.
