Geothermal pitched as Site C dam alternative By Tom Fletcher Geothermal energy can help power the B.C. electrical grid around the province, and B.C. should assess that option before deciding to pro-
ceed with a third dam on the Peace River, an industry association says. The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) issued a report Tuesday detailing its latest work on geothermal sites. In addition to hot springs and volcanic sites that could be tapped to provide power, the study examines “hot sedimentary aquifers” that have been stumbled upon by oil and gas drilling. Thompson pointed to the recent joint federalprovincial review of BC Hydro’s Site C dam project, which noted that little research into geothermal energy has been conducted in B.C. The CanGEA report estimates that deep hot water aquifers and other geothermal sources are capable of producing enough electricity to meet BC Hydro’s projected needs, including the 1,100 megawatt capacity offered by Site C. The report calls for a one-year delay on Site C, which has passed federal and provincial environmental reviews. Energy Minister Bill Bennett said Tuesday he expects cabinet to make a final investment decision on BC Hydro’s $8 billion dam proposal by the end of December. He said geothermal energy has potential in B.C. because unlike wind or solar power it provides a steady source of power, but he doesn’t see it as an alternative to the dam. “It is a good resource,” Bennett said. “We do want to use it. It will be important to B.C. in the future. It’s not a way to get the 1,100 megawatts of electricity that we need now.” Bennett noted that the provincially-funded research agency GeoScienceBC issued a request for proposals Tuesday for a study on the economic viability of geothermal resources. CanGEA is doing its own mapping, not just of promising sources but their proximity to roads, power lines and consumers. Thompson said the industry is also looking at combining solar and biomass with geothermally heated water to produce enough heat to fire boilers for electricity. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver said the report shows Site C should not go ahead next year, because CanGEA projects lower cost, with power sources and jobs distributed across the province.

Avalanche Canada is issuing a special public avalanche warning for the mountains of BC’s interior, including the North Rockies, Cariboos, North Columbia, South Columbia, Purcells, Kootenay Boundary, South Rockies, and Lizard Range and Flathead. This warning applies to recreational backcountryusers and is in effect from Friday, November 28 to Monday, December 1. Heavy snow, strong
winds and warm temperatures this week have resulted in high avalanche danger ratings across the regions. But the main concern is the coming weekend, when the weather clears and the temperatures drop. The danger ratings will go down as natural avalanche activity decreases but the potential for large and destructive humantriggered avalanches remains. “The slow start to the winter, with cold temperatures and low snowfall, gave us a weak snowpack,”
sure to overhead hazard, and re-group in safe zones away from avalanche run-outs. If you do not have the training or experience to assess avalanche terrain, stay in areas where avalanche risk is professionally managed. All backcountry users must be equipped with essential avalanche safety equipment. Everyone in the party needs an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel every day. It’s equally important that everyone has avalanche training and

speed. In addition to education and awareness police review the statistics and will follow up with enforcement action in the area if necessary. This year the volunteers put in more than 140 hours and set up on 34 separate occasions, recording the speed of more than 6700 vehicles. Less than 10% of those vehicles were exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 kmh. Placement of the teams is a collaborative effort between the Speedwatch coordinators and police. Location deployments are based on observations made by the police, complaints received from residents and local government or in high risk areas (i.e. school zones). In addition to enforcement police often send warning letters to those may need a further reminder to slow down. Sgt. Darrell Robinson, Kimberley Detachment commander, “The volunteers are committed to making Kimberley roads safer for everybody and their time and effort is truly appreciated” Next year the group intends to implement “Cell Watch” which will make observations with respect to the use of electronic devices while driving. Texting while driving is a serious issue and is becoming one of the major factors in a high number of collisions. If you wish to become part of the Speedwatch group for 2015, please contact the Kimberley RCMP.

Jason Beaudry, classified as a high risk offender, is planning on moving to Cranbrook. by Brian Coombs
Individuals receive bad news all the time. Their pay cheque may turn out to be low, the doctor may have his suspicions about that nasty lump on your back or you may have failed a key interview. This is part of life and we generally accept that into everyone’s life, a little rain must fall and we move on. This past week, the entire community of Cranbrook got some bad news and we, as a city, have to figure out how to move on. Jason Beaudry, a man classified as a ‘violent, high risk offender’ is planning on moving to Cranbrook. This man has at least 70 convictions, including violent and sexual offences and weapon charges. According to the RCMP, his victims have been men and women, total strangers and casual acquaintances. Some of these offences included weapon use. Before continuing, know that this individual has served his

sentence(s). He has gone through the court system, been found guilty of his crimes and paid the internment penalty required. Also know that if this individual was convicted of non-violent, nonsexual property crimes, the RCMP would not have given the community a notice of his intending to move here. That would have been a case of time served, and move on. But as a society, we have deemed that certain crimes deserve harsher punishment than others, especially sexual assaults. This part of his record will haunt him – for good reason – for the rest of his life. Call this an additional part of his punishment or rehabilitation, but Beaudry will move to this community and already be known for his crimes. Getting work will be difficult for him. Enjoying the anonymity most of us enjoy when out and about will be difficult for him. Finding friendship will be difficult for him. Convincing the com-

munity that he will not re-offend will be difficult for him. But as stated above, he has served his time and the courts have seen fit to release him back into regular society. Why he chose Cranbrook is anyone’s guess, but he may have some form of support system here, either with family, friends or a qualified outreach organization that made this community a good choice for him. Still, this does not change the fact that for many of us, Beaudry moving here is a scary concept. He has proven, in the past, to be unable to control his urges for violent action and sexual offences. Now in the future, he may prove to be a poster-child for rehabilitation and live out the rest of his days as a useful, contributing member of the community. That is redemption and that concept is as big a cornerstone of philosophical and spiritual life as ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you.’ The RCMP however, have seen fit to issue a warning to the community about this person.

On Tuesday, November 25th, Aspire Dance Academy had 15 dancers take a Master Ballet class with guest teacher TJ Milne. TJ is a performer from tonight’s show “Max and Ruby in the Nutcracker” held at the Key City Theatre. TJ was accompanied by her pianist Julia Sunay also a performer in tonight’s show. The dancers had a wonderful ballet class and were thrilled to have this experience. We thank Koba Entertainment Inc. for making this workshop possible.
The question we (The Kootenay Advertiser) are asking is: Should a high risk offender like Jason Beaudry ever be released back into society or should they remain locked away? Visit www.kooten a y a d v e r t i s e r. c o m , hover your mouse over ‘Opinion’, then click ‘Web Poll’ on the dropdown menu and answer that question in our latest survey.

Busting the fat myth
Saturated fat from cream, cheese, meat and butter are bad for you right? These foods have lots of cholesterol and cholesterol is a killer right? It would be an understatement to say these two sentences represent conventional wisdom; they are approaching the power of gospel. There is, however, a mountain of evidence indicating that this gospel has been wrong and that we have blamed the wrong foods for obesity, diabetes and heart disease. The best science from the last 10 years now shows that too many carbohydrates, including whole grains, cereals, pastas and, of course, sugars, increase the risk of these diseases compared with a diet low in carbs. Since the 1950's researchers have been telling us that carbohydrates are uniquely fattening. Eating carbohydrates stimulates the release of insulin which helps sugar get into the cell and is also extremely effective at storing fat. Fructose, the main sugar in fruit, stimulates the liver to make triglycerides and other fats that are particularly bad news. How, then,
did we end up believing that cholesterol is the primary culprit? According to many authors and researchers it has been a blend of personal ambition, bad science, politics and bias. Two studies in the last two years have added more muscle to disproving fat phobia. In 2012, a Norwegian study looked at 52,000 people and found that women with high cholesterol had a 28% lower risk of dying than women with low cholesterol. In 2014 a huge meta-analysis of 80 studies and 500,000 people published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that people who eat more saturated fat have no more heart disease than those who consume less. So, how the heck should you eat? Start by reducing your intake of sugar, including honey and maple syrup. Make your whole grain a side dish, not the main part of the meal. Don't avoid fats, they are healthy and necessary. Limit your fruit intake to three servings a day and eat as many vegetables as you can.

This is something that will stay with you long after you receive your Award. You will always know just how much you are capable of, and that is a powerful thing for youth to know,” she

Local rider makes coveted Team Canada Para-Equestrian list enter live competitions. And that’s what she did. 2014 saw Sarah compete at four Nationally Recognized Competitions in Canada and the USA, yielding results that placed her at the top in each competition. She is now in the top 10 Para-Equestrian riders in Canada. Next trial: the short list and Canada’s Olympic Team. The Olympic stretch for excellence takes
devotion and precision training to up the ante and secure a win. Someone like Jessica Wisdom, recent USA National Grand Prix Champion (http://www. eqequestrian.com/) is just the right person to have on Sarah’s team. Jessica Wisdom is coming to town December 6 and 7. She will conduct a dressage clinic hosted by Riverbend Equestrian Centre at Wycliffe. To secure a spot on the short list, Sarah will
be riding against some pretty stiff competition and there’s not much funding at this stage. Sarah has to finance everything on her own. She’s a hard worker, helping out at Riverbend Equestrian Centre in exchange for lessons and the use of Spirit Keeper, the Medicine Hat Paint she competes on. Expenses for shows stack up pretty quick and she pays those out of her earnings at a part time job. The clinic is a
cost recovery program that depends on registrations to pay for it. In parallel, Riverbend Equestrian Centre will offer the opportunity to audit the clinic, make purchases, bid in a silent auction and enjoy a snack at a modest concession stand. Proceeds will help to fund Sarah’s journey. For information contact riverbendstable@ gmail.com.

Local artist wins national acclaim in Legion poster contest
Darynn Bednarczyk is the local winner of the Royal Canadian Legion poster contest. Below she shares her experience.
by Darynn Bednarczyk Last year, I entered the Royal Canadian Legion poster contest and my drawing was chosen from 7000 entries to be 1st place in all of Canada. The grand prize was an allinclusive trip to Ottawa for the Remembrance Day Ceremony. I had no idea it would be this incredible. We were greeted at the airport by our amazing host Mr. Bill Maxwell of the Royal Canadian Legion. He let us know of the events in the days to follow. There was a private tour of the Parliament building, accommodations at the Chateau Laurier hotel, a wonderful Luncheon and awards ceremony where we met many dignified Legion members and amazing outstanding citizens. We also toured the war museum, in which my drawing is on display in the main lobby. But the highlight of this trip for me was the Ceremony itself. This was a very emotional year in Ottawa due to the tragedy that
occurred at the War Memorial just prior to Nov.11, and the re-dedication of the Memorial by Princess Ann. The ceremony hosted more than 50,000 people. I, along with the color poster winner, the poetry and essay winners and Canada’s top 3 cadets were center stage. We were personally introduced and acknowledged by Canada’s highest dignitaries including the Prime Minister, The Governor General, the Silver Cross Mother, and Princess Anne. Together, the four winners presented a wreath on behalf of the Youth of Canada. We also had a grand luncheon at Rideau Hall with the Governor General. I was interviewed on live TV by CBC. I entered this contest several times over the course of my school life, and honestly, this is the best thing I’ve ever been able to do. This time, I drew my grandfather, his medals and recreated his original war photos from WWII. It was such an honor to be chosen as the winner for this National Remembrance Day event. I highly encourage all kids in school to enter this contest. It’s so worth it, your life will
