Christmas comes to Armstrong

Light Up launches holidays in Armstrong Morning Star Staff

It’s an evening of merriment that kicks off the Christmas season in Armstrong and Spallumcheen. The annual Home for the Holidays Downtown Light Up and Parade, sponsored by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, takes place Thursday, Nov. 27. “This will be an evening of fun for the whole family and it’s all free,” said Andrew Laird, president of the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the annual parade, there will also be the official light up, an opportunity to visit with Santa at Shepherd’s Outdoor Living Centre, road hockey with the North Okanagan Knights junior team, Spin the Wheel with BC Hydro and the Girl Guide cookie decorating booth in partnership with Country Bakery. Local businesses and organizations will be offering refreshments and in-store specials as well as contests and giveaways during the day leading up to the parade.

The parade leave the Village Cheese Company at 6 p.m. and travels east on Pleasant Valley Road, then circles Spirit Square on Pleasant Valley Boulevard before heading back to the Village Cheese. “Santa will arrive at Spirit Square via transporation provided by Caravan Farm Theatre, and will flip the switch to signal the arrival of Christmas to Armstrong and Spallumcheen at about 6:30 p.m.,” said Laird.

Armstrong Celebrates a Festival of Trees ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

It started as a tribute to Christmases past, and as an event for Armstrong’s centennial birthday in 2013. The first Festival of Trees was such a huge hit, the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery is bringing back the event. “We did it for centennial and it was so successful we decided to do it again,” said Festival of Trees administrator Sherry MacFarlane. “It used to happen years ago apparently, but I’m not sure how it was done.” Festival of Trees is open to all businesses and organizations. They bring in a Christmas tree to the museum and decorate it on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The trees will be on display at the museum on Dec. 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28. Participants can decorate in any

theme of their choice. Last year’s event led to some, er, “delicious” ornaments vanishing from the trees on display days. “The Lions club had baked lions and Rogers Foods had cookies as ornaments and they kept disappearing,” laughed MacFarlane. “They, of course, were replaced. It was all in good fun.” The Armstrong RCMP detachment could not take part in the inaugural event, but they’ve gone above and beyond to participate this year.

returns in 2014

“We are getting ornaments from RCMP wives across Canada,” said MacFarlane. “They are all handmade. We are so thrilled.” Festival of Trees also serves as a fundraiser. The price to enter the event is providing an item for a silent auction. Funds raised from the silent auction are divided back into

the non-profit groups that participate.. There will also be a box on-hand at the museum to collect donations for the local food bank. People who come to view the trees will be encouraged to vote for their favourite, which will be awarded the People’s Choice honour.
