The city of Coquitlam is asking School District 43 for clarity on when and where the board intends to build new schools on Burke Mountain.

Seven properties have

been identified as potential elementary and middle school sites in the area but the district has said it will only need four to serve the new neighbourhood.

During Monday night’s meeting, council voted unanimously in favour of sending a letter to the

board asking for more information and a definitive timeline.

“We need clarity for developers and people moving in there,” said Coun.

Brent Asmundson, who put forward the motion to send the letter to the district and is a Burke Mountain resi-

dent. “We have been at the school board for over two years now to give us some clarity on those four sites that they are going to need.”

While no sites have been formally selected, Coquitlam city staff did note that SD43 has indicated several preferences

The city’s planning and development general manager, Jim McIntyre, said a piece of land in Upper Hyde Creek located west of Coast Meridian Road and north of David Avenue previously considered for an elementary school will no longer

be required by the board.

Grants helping to feed tweens

School District 43 has no plans to come up with an alternative for lunches at middle schools where cafeterias were shut down to save money.

But vulnerable students who used to get subsidized meals at the school cafeterias are still getting fed with grants of up to $3,000 in provincial Community Link money to schools with significant at-risk student populations.

SD43 assistant superintendent Julie Pearce acknowledged that some parents have complained about the cafeteria closures but she said there are no plans to put in another kind of program to replace support staff jobs that were lost.

“We had a number of employees lose their jobs,” she said. “We are taking our time to see what our options are.”

Closing school cafeterias was one of a series of measures taken last spring to cut $13.4 million from the 2014/’15 budget. Two part-time jobs at each middle school were cut for a total of approximately seven full-time equivalent positions.

Cafeterias remain open at SD43 high schools.

Making school lunches for 300 elementary school children is not an easy job but a group of women working out of Port Coquitlam’s Central elementary school know how to make it fun.

The four drivers and school meal co-ordinators who make, bag and deliver lunches that are distributed daily to 22 elementary schools in School District 43 take their jobs seriously.

Their hands don’t stop from about 8 a.m. to noon, as they make sandwiches, wash fruit and prepare desserts for children in kindergarten to Grade 5.

They chat as they wash fruit, butter buns and pack paper bags — white for special dietary needs, standard brown for the remainder — into blue plastic tubs and then deliver them.

Their job is doubly challenged by the need to come up with food that kids will eat that is also healthy and they plan these meals well in advance.

Among the meal ideas the ladies turn into tasty reality are chicken and taco salads, cheese sandwiches and wraps. Special desserts are made, such as

“People think we’re just making lunch but, when you break down the whole process from preparation to delivery, there’s a lot of components,” said Janet Winship, who heads the program.

Their efforts are appreciated by the children, said assistant superintendent Julie Pearce, who oversees the program. She said

many of these children might otherwise go without. Approximately half of the lunches are paid for, with parents sending $4 a day to school for the nutritious meals. But the remaining half are paid for with about $100,000 of provincial Community Link funding that is targeted to vulnerable students.

“There’s an increase in need, and it’s hard to get a hold of,” Pearce said.

who has been making school lunches for 12 years, said she, too, has seen an increase in the need over the last several years as the school district has grown and the population has diversified.

“It’s a very necessary program,” Niven said. “It’s good to know these kids are getting fed.”

Central elementary, where the lunches are made, also has a successful breakfast program where about 20 children

come each day for cereal, a toasted bagel and fruit.

The lunch ladies say they are sympathetic towards the struggling families — they see how expensive food has become and are pleased the district can help out in this small way.

Lenore Van Loenen said she especially likes getting to know the students who get the lunches. “There is never any waste,” she said, and she knows the kids appreciate the special treats.

Share Family and Community Services expects its volunteers to pack more hampers this holiday season as vulnerable families continue to receive community support while they juggle the bills and expectations faced by many this time of year.

Last year, Share delivered 1,168 hampers during the Christmas period and this

year, the non-profit agency that runs food banks in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody expects its volunteers to pack more than 1,300.

“The food and funds that we raise for the next 30 days will help us feed people in our local neighbourhoods, children in our schools, seniors and others who need our help,” Share CEO Martin Wyant wrote in an email. “Please help us bring a warm welcome, at an im-

portant time of year, to our neighbours who need us.”

Wyant said he’s counting on the continued generosity of individuals, schools, businesses, sports teams, faith groups and service clubs for this year’s holiday food drive. Some 40,000 lb. of food is needed to fill Christmas hampers this year.

And among the items needed are nutritious staples — when donating, people are asked to keep

the Canada Food Guide in mind. Some of the most urgently needed items are: • canned fruit; • canned vegetables; • canned fish and meat; • canned meals; • pasta and pasta sauce; • peanut butter; • juice; • cereal; • rice; • pasta and pasta sauce.

Financial donations are also requested to purchase extra items and run the

delivery vans. Here are the three ways to donate: • Drop off your donations to Share at 2615 Clarke St. in Port Moody (at the back of the building).

Another elementary school south of David and north of Victoria Drive in the Partington Creek area will also likely not be necessary, McIntyre told councillors, while staff also expect a middle school south of David Avenue in the Smiling Creek area will be eliminated. “My understanding is the school district has some preferred sites,” said Perry Saniscia, the city’s general manager of strategic initiatives.

If these preferences are eventually chosen, that would leave three elementary schools — one in Smiling Creek and two in Partington Creek — and a middle school, which is planned for the east side of Partington north of David.

McIntyre said the three sites not chosen for future schools could be used for other municipal purposes and a city staff report noted that public consultation is expected to be undertaken to determine alternate uses.

Several timelines for school construction completion are also likely to change, staff said during Monday’s meeting. For example, a new Smiling Creek elementary, which was expected to open in 2016, will now likely be completed in 2017.

According to a 2012 SD43 staff report, Partington Creek elementary would be next on the list, with a planned opening date set for 2021, while the new Burke Mountain secondary is scheduled to open in 2023. Another elementary school located on Marigold Street in Partington is expected to be completed before the opening of a

Coquitlam’s historic Booth Farm is an important part of the municipality’s heritage and will one day be a significant civic facility.

But for now, it will be home to the four to five staff members on the city’s gardening team, a move designed to improve security by creating more activity on the site.

On Monday, council voted unanimously in favour of changing the zoning of the property to civic institutional and the building will be used as a satellite office to the Austin works yard.

According to a city staff report, the building currently sits empty. By having employees and vehicles coming and going, it is believed security on the property will be improved, the document said.

Booth Farm was the site of many community picnics — such as the one shown above from 1928 — in the early days of Coquitlam. The city bought the site last year. of locations, particularly around the city centre and Douglas College neighbourhoods.

Council first considered the bylaw in October but several concerns were raised about how the carts and trucks would affect existing restaurants in the area.

Staff came back with a proposal that would put certain limits on vendors, who now must be at least 30 m from a restaurant.

Licensing fees have also been changed. For example, licensing costs for street vendors and food trucks were initially set for a $110 flat fee plus $25 for every square foot of space used, which worked out to an average fee of $2,500.

BOOTH FARM BACKGROUND The city of Coquitlam bought Booth Farm on Brunette Avenue last year for $590,000 — plus an adjoining vacant lot for $510,000 — with the aim to re-create the community spirit that once prevailed on the property.

Built in 1901, Booth Farm is either the oldest or second oldest home in Coquitlam. According to the city’s heritage inventory narrative, a home on nearby Marathon Court (known as the Brehaut House) was built in either 1898 or 1909.

Booth Farm was built with lumber from Fraser Mills in Maillardville, which at the turn of the last century was the biggest sawmill in the British Commonwealth. The property is named after the original owner, Ralph Booth, the area’s reeve from 1904 to 1908.

With the acquisition of Booth Farm — a twostorey, 2,300 sq. ft. home — the city now owns three heritage assets, including Ryan House and Mackin House, both located beside Place des Arts and built in 1908 and 1913 respectively. All three homes are listed as of “primary” value in the city’s heritage inventory.

At the time of the Booth property acquisition, Coun. Craig Hodge said: “This property played an important part in our history.” He added that he hopes Booth Farm will be ready in time for Coquitlam’s 125th birthday celebrations in 2016.

Two Surrey men are behind bars after Burnaby and Coquitlam RCMP investigated three violent convenience store robberies that took place earlier this month.

The crime spree began in the early morning of Nov. 3, when two men robbed a convenience store on Austin Avenue in Coquitlam; one of the

men brandished a knife and threatened to harm the store employee, and the duo fled after stealing cash, cigarettes and bottled drinks.

The second robbery happened at another convenience store on Austin Avenue; one of the suspects again brandished a knife and they took off after robbing the store of cash, e-cigarettes and lighters.

The third robbery oc-

curred at a convenience store in the 9600-block of Cameron Street in Burnaby, near the Coquitlam border. The pair brandished a knife and assaulted the store employee before fleeing with several packages of cigarettes.

“These robberies quickly got our attention as the level of violence was escalating,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung in a press

release.

He said investigators from Burnaby RCMP’s Strike Force and Coquitlam RCMP’s robbery section got together to work on the case and, in less than three days, two suspects were identified and arrested.

The two Surrey men, 18 year-old Joshawa Hall and 25-year-old Anthony Colgan, are now each facing the following criminal charges: three counts of

Vaccine less effective against mutant strain

This year’s flu shot may prove less effective than usual because the dominant virus now circulating has mutated significantly in the months since the vaccine was devised.

The H3N2 strain — one of three targeted in this year’s flu vaccine — is thought to have changed its genetic makeup enough to possibly thwart the antibodies that the vaccine activates.

Dr. Danuta Skowronski, an epidemiologist with the BC Centre for Disease Control, is still recommending the vaccine, particularly for the elderly, the chronically ill and those with compromised immune systems.

“It’s not a perfect match,” she said. “But for the high risk, even an imperfectly matched vaccine is going to give cross protection. And for some people it could be life-saving.”

She said the H3N2 strain tends to be particularly nasty to the elderly and may bring a deadlier flu season than usual.

“We may see more hospitalizations or deaths this year,” Skowronski said.

She said it’s particularly concerning that the flu has struck B.C. surprisingly early this season, causing outbreaks in eight seniors’ care homes.

Skowronski said it’s still not too late to get the shot and some protection when flu activity peaks in the weeks ahead, including any later surge of cases of influenza B, which tends to peak in March or April.

Even in years when the vaccine is a better fit — last year’s was about 70 per cent effective against the then-dominant H1N1 strain — Skowronski says everyone should wash their hands frequently and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.

People who get the flu shot often mistakenly think any illness they contract can’t be flu and sometimes fail to get appropriate treatment.

“It doesn’t make you invincible,” Skowronski said.

Anti-viral medication can stop or fight an influenza infection but must be given quickly, ideally within 12 hours of the start of symptoms.

An estimated 3,500 Canadians die each year from flu complications — mainly seniors and others with underlying conditions.

Three Port Moody businesses are in the running for the Small Business BC Awards, although one has since moved to Vancouver.

Rocky Point Ice Cream is up for Best Company while the Runner’s Den and Chomp Vegan Eatery are both nominated for Premier’s People’s Choice awards. Chomp, which opened in Suter Brook in 2011, closed and moved to Vancouver’s Fraser Street earlier this month.

A Port Moody nurse is encouraging Grade 10 and 11 students in School District 43 to apply for the Rotary Youth Exchange so they can have the same life-changing experience she had when she went to Switzerland eight years ago.

Megan Staub, who is now 25 and spent her 2006/’07 school year in the European country, living with four different families, making friends and learning the language, said she returned to Canada “a proud, independent, confident, courageous and ambitious young adult, ready to take on the world.”

Staub even went through a health crisis, developing ulcerative colitis, but refused to go home; she was able to complete her year with support from her host families, Rotary counsellors, doctors and new friends. “I will forever be grateful to their kindness towards a young woman they had just met,” she wrote in a letter to The Tri-City News describing her experience.

Now, she’s urging SD43 students to apply for the Rotary Exchange program, the deadline for which is fast approaching.

“It’s actually an ambassador we are looking for,” explained Alan Schmelzel, president of the Rotary Club of Port Moody.

He said the exchange

student must be responsible, articulate and eager to represent the Tri-Cities in another country while also dealing with the stresses of homesickness and learning another language.

Typically, ambassadors don’t graduate with their peers as they generally take fun courses when they are abroad and return home to take their academics.

Still, it’s an experience not to be missed, Schmelzel said, and is ideal for those with leadership skills and an interest in travel and learning a language.

Some of the countries to which the Tri-Cities’ various Rotary clubs have sent students to include Brazil, South America, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Mexico and Australia.

The Tri-Cities will also be hosting an exchange student and Schmelzel said it’s gratifying to see young people gain confidence through their exchange experience.

Staub, who works in the emergency room at Eagle Ridge Hospital, said she has friends all over the world and continued her involvement in various Rotary projects for young people when she returned.

“I would not be the person I am today, have my chosen career, nor would I have been exposed to the world of Rotary to this extent, if I had not gone on Rotary Exchange. Please bring

Labour backs yes ref. vote SWEEPSTAKES B.C.’s labour unions are pledging to support the Yes side in an expected spring referendum on new taxes for transit expansion in Metro Vancouver.

A unanimous vote of delegates at the BC Federation of Labour convention on Monday means “labour is now fully on board” to help win the referendum, according to Nathan Woods, president of the union representing bus drivers.

Unifor Local 111 and

other unions representing TransLink staff had already been strongly supportive and Woods predicts labour will work in coalition with business, environment, community and other groups in the coming campaign.

“There are hundreds of thousands of workers who depend on public transit every day to get to and from their job and we will be talking directly to them about how the Mayors’ Council plan will cut commute times

but also take thousands of cars off the road as transit becomes a better option,” Unifor western director Joie Warnock added.

No final deal is in place yet between the province and the Mayors’ Council on exactly what new tax or levy would finance the proposed $7.5-billion expansion plan, which includes rapid transit lines and an increase in bus service. Further talks are expected in early December.

governments. Its carbon tax bill alone is $9 million.

Yes, the company makes a lot of money but we live in a capitalist society not a communist one. Mr. King’s stance on the issue can only be seen as a personal bias against the petroleum industry and he is allowing his bias to trump his responsibilities as an educator.

As a parent and an educator, I strongly encourage teachers to apply for the funding available through Fuel for School.

Opportunities like this one are rare, and if educators don’t apply for the money, it is possible that the program will be terminated.

If the teacher’s unions have issues with the amount of funding, the application process or Chevron’s expectations, it makes more sense to work with Chevron to sort out those issues rather than disregard the program entirely.

is ridiculous. First, a competitive process is not a negative thing — it ensures that the best proposals are supported. Second, it’s not a small pot of money, it is $100,000 (a year). That pays for a lot of classroomenhancement projects and there are very few opportunities for teachers to apply for that sort of funding.

Finally, Chevron supports projects that are posted on the crowdfunding website myclassneeds.ca. It does not give the money directly to schools and does not impose expectations on teachers.

• Mr. King goes says: “If Chevron wants to be a good neighbour, I think they should pay their fair share of taxes. Ordinary families pay enough and oil companies are making record profits.”

This gets to the crux of the problem. Chevron employs 250-plus people and another 200 contractors in the Lower Mainland. It pays the taxes it owes, including millions to the federal, provincial and municipal

view water supply is as a commodity whose cost is based on use and access to the commodity depends on one’s ability to pay.

Thus, differentiating the rate between singlefamily and multi-family homes is a step towards commoditizing our water resource.

Despite representations made to the public, water is cheap and plentiful in our region and, at $426 per year ($35.50 per month), it is cheaper than both my phone and cable service. Most of us don’t worry about how much time our fellow residents are watching TV or using the phone, so why differentiate the cost of water based on perceived use?

I would argue that arbitrarily choosing a differential rate between different classes of dwelling is just that — arbitrary. What could be fairer than each property owner equally sharing in the cost of providing a service to which we all have equal access?

There should at least be a public debate on this issue prior to its implementation, preferably prior to the next civic election in four years’ time.

I’ll admit up front that I am an owner of a single-family home in Coquitlam, so I do have a bias as I read the article on the impending shift in the burden of financing the city’s water utility from multi-family residences to singlefamily homes.

I’ll also admit the I am a bit of a cynic so I’m naturally suspicious of the timing and motive of this announcement, right after a civic election, in which the electorate did not have the ability to question the candidates on this issue. It’s the timing of this announcement that has compelled me to write this letter.

There are two ways to think of water supply.

You can either think of it as a public service where every property owner shares the cost of the service equally, with each owner having the same right to access to the service. Other services traditionally provided this way are local home telephone service, or cable TV, and your use of these services does not affect the rate you pay.

If the provincial government were to increase resources for education, that additional funding would almost certainly go to salaries and not to enhancing classrooms.

action on Metro legal move against PoMo not expected until new year OCP is at issue; mayor hopes to meet with Metro in Jan. Janis Warren

Metro Vancouver launched a legal petition earlier this month against the city of Port Moody, alleging its new official community plan (OCP) is “invalid.”

In its action, filed Nov. 13 at BC Supreme Court in Vancouver — two days before the city election — Metro Vancouver claims the OCP that Port Moody council adopted 5-2 a month earlier is contrary to provincial legislation.

According to the Metro court filing, Section 866 of the Local Government Act states that all 21 municipalities must have a regional context statement (RCS) accepted by the Metro board in its OCP. Since Port Moody’s

POMO MAYOR MIKE CLAY doesn’t, it says, its blueprint for growth effectively does not meet statutory content: “Until such time the new OCP meets the required content required

by Section 866 of the Local Government Act, the new OCP is not in force and effect,” the petition states.

Metro Vancouver officials and Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, who chairs the regional board, which voted in camera to pursue legal action against Port Moody, declined to comment while the case is before the courts.

“We’re looking for a way to resolve it,” Metro

spokesperson Bill Morrell said.

Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay said the legal challenge by Metro was expected.

On Monday, he told The Tri-City News the city had been discussing the land use matter with Metro for some time. In the spring, when the city took its proposed OCP to Metro for comment, Clay said Metro suggested the city make four changes, of which two were later approved and two denied.

Those two concerned the Mill and Timber (Flavelle mill) site next to Rocky Point Park and the former Andrés Winery.

Clay said Metro insisted those sites be moved from industrial to general urban use — something the city did not want to do because there was no immediate plan to develop them.

Clay said Metro then reversed its decision, denying Port Moody a change from industrial

to general urban. “We said, ‘We’re OK with that because they’re industrial sites with a special-study area overlay,’” Clay said, adding, “This is why we’ve gotten where we’ve gotten, because there’s basically a disagreement with the semantics of what they’re doing. They told us what to do, then voted against it.”

Clay said Port Moody has sent a letter to Metro that it won’t be responding to the petition within the required 21-day period because of the city council and Metro board change-over after the Nov. 15 civic election.

But he and city staff hope to meet with Metro officials early in the new year, when Clay said he believes there will likely be a change to the city’s RCS. “We will meet their conditions. We will just file an amended one...

Start with yourself. In his book Enough Already!

Clearing Mental Clutter to Become the Best You, Peter Walsh writes, “Our homes, our heads, our hearts and our hips are intimately interconnected.” He provides

a plan for clearing the mental and emotional clutter to create balance in your relationships, work, family life, finances, health and spirituality. Interspersed throughout the text are interesting letters to the author as well as thoughtprovoking quizzes and activities designed to help you discover how your mind, and hence your physical spaces, become cluttered

and how you can refocus your priorities to finally create the life you desire.

Jenny Schroedel’s The Everything Organize Your Home Book really does provide information on nearly everything related to organization. Schroedel provides techniques for combating the clutter habit and suggests improving the energy in your home through feng shui and other spiritual practices. There are separate chapters for every room in your home, which give tips on determining your needs for each space and selecting furniture, lighting, etc.

Helpful icons throughout the book indicate answers to common questions, important facts, handy tips and urgent warnings. The Everything Organize Your Home Book is a helpful general resource for your home organization needs.

Two years ago, Jeannette Sirois’ younger sister, a photographer, sent her an email out of the blue about The Kingston Prize, a national portrait competition.

Sirois was perplexed about her sibling’s intentions as she was primarily an abstract painter, drawer and designer; however, the Surrey resident and Langara College visual arts lecturer decided to give a whirl although she had never taken a portraiture class in her life.

Despite being pleased with her submission, Sirois’ entry didn’t make the cut but the challenge spurred her on to do more. A few months later, her secondever portrait took first place with the Surrey Arts Gallery and, since then, her newfound skill has won rave reviews and accolades.

Now, Sirois has her first collection of portraits, titled Beyond Real: Overexposed Underexposed, which will be unveiled at Port Coquitlam’s Leigh Square Community Arts Village next week.

Her series features 21 images of hired models, close friends and family members, ranging in age from 20 to 80. And the process she used to capture each of them in a non-traditional way — i.e., outside of a studio setting — was meticulous.

Because she admits she has difficulty reading faces and proportions, Sirois spent about two hours talking and walking with each subject, snapping up to 400

Sirois wanted to make them feel comfortable so the chatter would happen in a living room or on a trail — anywhere they would feel more relaxed, she said.

Then, at her computer, she sifted through the digital pictures and zeroed in on her favourites. Using the software PhotoShop, Sirois played with the images — overexposing, underexposing, cropping and adjusting the composition, for example — until she settled on a few. Those images — the ones that she believed brought out the most character — became the basis of

her portrait drawings.

Every drawing took between 70 and 100 hours and were done in a new medium for her: pencil crayon, which Sirois says offers the most control for portraits.

But sometimes when Sirois showed her subjects the finished project, the raw elements of the face — that is, the lines, wrinkles, frowns, etc. — generated a negative reaction, she said.

Still, Sirois said she’s encouraged by the feedback to her artwork. After her inaugural show ends in PoCo on Jan. 12, her collection will be exhibited at The Cultch in Vancouver.

World winter tunes For Rebecca Blair’s holiday concert, the lights at Place des Arts will be dimmed and the LED lights on her harp will glow for the opening song, the Huron Carol.

The tune, composed in 1642 by Jesuit missionary Jean de Brebeuf, is the oldest Christmas hymn in Canada and will set the stage for Blair’s 90-minute festive show, an annual event that tends to sell out.

Blair said her Saturday recital, titled Once Upon A Winter’s Night, will evoke strong imagery, colours and texture to represent the chilly evenings now upon us — and it will unfold with seasonal music from around the world.

A Place des Arts harp instructor for 15 years, Blair will be joined on stage by fellow harpist Judy Henry, who also plays the flute; New Brunswick soprano and percussionist Megan Goudreau, a music therapist; and Deborah Jackson on the flute and recorder.

There will be solos, duets, trios and foursomes as well as a few sing-alongs like Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls, Blair said.

A loss to Sutherland secondary on Friday kept the Dr. Charles Best secondary Blue Devils from winning gold at the B.C. soccer provincials, but the team were able to come away with a bronze medal after a victory in the consolation game.

The AAA high school soccer squad defeated Tamanawis secondary in the battle for third place in B.C., downing the Surrey school by a score of 4-0.

With the win, the Blue Devils wrapped up a successful soccer season.

Best was the only school to appear in the B.C. championship after finishing the regular season with a 7-0 record.

However, the team’s win percentage was not the only thing opponents had to worry about.

After a bumpy showing in the Fraser Valley playoffs, Best earned berth in the B.C. championships.

The club opened the tournament with a dominant 4-0 win over Mount Boucherie, following up with a second 2-1 victory over Sir Winston Churchill on the first day of the event.

The club had a bit of a hiccup when they played Queen Elizabeth secondary to a 1-1 tie, but Best suffered its defeat on Friday, when it dropped the game 3-1 to Sutherland.

That game knocked the team out of first place contention, setting up the squad for a third place showdown against Tamanawis, which the Blue Devils won.

Panorama Ridge secondary eventually defeated Sutherland in the finals to take first place in the province.

The Terry Fox Ravens are in the final four, one game away from making their second trip in a row to the B.C. AAA high school

football provincial championships under the dome at B.C. Place Stadium.

The Port Coquitlam club demolished New Westminster in the postseason quarterfinal, taking down the team on home turf 37-0. With the win, the Ravens are poised to take on South Delta next week in the semifinals, which will be held at the University of British

Columbia.

Fox has been on fire all season, seemed to find another gear on Friday night in the win over New Westminster Hyacks.

The team jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the game and kept piling on the points as the quarter wore on.

Early turnovers cost the Hyacks, while Mike West, Keishon Ross, Tyler

Poitras and Isaiah Stevens all had touchdowns in the match. Ravens quarterback Connor McKee finished the game with 101 yards.

Former Marlins medal with school swim teams Riverside team takes gold & sets B.C. record

Members of the Port Coquitlam Marlins Swim Club had strong showings at the B.C. High School Provincial Swim Championships last week in Richmond.

More than 1,100 swimmers from 93 schools competed in the event, with several local athletes taking home medals in their individual competitions.

Riverside secondary’s 200 m medley relay team, consisting of Jasmin and Sara Whelan, Brooke Ancell and Lindsey Cauley got the meet off to a strong start, winning their category and setting a new provincial record in the process. The team also snagged a bronze medal in the 400 m free relay against a pool full of tough competition.

All four swimmers got their start with the PoCo Marlins, before moving on to year-round clubs in Burnaby and Vancouver.

Alyssa O’Connor took gold in the 100 IM final and silver in the 50 fly. The school won bronze in the 200 free relay, a team that consistent of O’Connor, Taylor Clark and Kassandra Richard.

Fox also earned valuable points in the 200 m mixed free and medley relays, with a team made up of Ben Nichols, Adam Prelowski, Hannah O’Connor and Natalia Dziekciowski. The school wrapped up the event in 15th place.

Coq. Edge find a way to come back against PoCo The Coquitlam Metro-Ford Edge came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat their Tri-City rivals the Port Coquitlam inferno in under-18 girls soccer action on the weekend at Gates Park.

The Edge fell behind early when a PoCo forward found an open backside attacker that left Coquitlam net minder Angela Webster with no

chance to make the save.

After the goal, the visitors began to pick up the pace, but took the deficit into the first intermission.

In the second, however, the Edge came out strong. The team drew even at the 57th minute when Cassidy Cooper’s shot was deflected to teammates Cassie Weimer, who buried the ball from 18 yards out.

Coquitlam continued to press and were eventually rewarded when Yuna Chang’s free kick found Cooper in the box, who coolly drilled the ball low to make it 2-1.

Strong defending by Justyna Pomalecki, Elaine Rosetti, Sam Feng and Tayler Kaartinen helped seal the win and keep the Edge in second place.

Christmas Carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

Make the most of Black/Red Friday Shopping

Black Friday is one the biggest shopping days of the year in the United States and is widely being recognized by Canadian Retailers. Also becoming known as Red Friday in Canada, it is often the perfect time to begin holiday shopping and save money on incredible deals. Thousands of eager shoppers will leave their homes in the early morning hours and wait in lines at stores in order to grab the best prices of the season, while retailers will be gearing up to lure the greatest number of shoppers. Surviving the day unscathed and arriving home with discounts galore involves having a game plan for success. * Know the prices of the items you want to buy. Scour advertisements in advance of Black/Red Friday to gauge the regular retail prices for common items, including electronics. Comparison shop for the best prices and make notes to help you. * Understand the fine print of â&#x20AC;&#x153;door busters.â&#x20AC;? Door buster sales are meant to get shoppers into stores, where retailers hope shoppers will make additional purchases while taking advantage of advertised deals. If door buster items are all youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for, read the advertisements carefully, noting the start and end time of the discounts and if there will be limited quantities. POST-ELECTION

At the Chamber, we understand the importance of public office and the challenges that it brings and we would like to start with a congratulations to all those candidates for stepping forward to represent the interests of the greater community.

After the whirlwind of the last 3 months, the 2014 municipal elections are finally over. While there was small changes to Port Coquitlam City Council, Coquitlam and , Michael Hind Port Moody represented Executive Director the greatest area of Tri-Cities Chamber change with the loss of Commerce of 2 incumbents and in Port Moody, the newest, youngest Councillor in BC at age 22; Robert Vagermov. For the most part there was consistency across the region.

The greatest turnover occurred in the School Trustee elections with 4 veterans losing elections and 2 self-selecting out by not running. As a result, 6 new SD-43 School Trustee’s (or 66% of the Trustee’s) will participate in the management of a budget in excess of $300 Million dollars with 3 veteran trustees to help share the load, not to mention a newly hired Superintendent.

This year, the Tri-Cities Chamber redesigned our All Candidates Meetings into structured debates. Our intention was to ask questions that shared our candidate’s knowledge, skills and revealed the scope of their ability. The new format involved greater community participation through the use of online service Pigeonhole Live – a platform where residents could submit questions online – vote for them - in an attempt to increase transparency and provide access to candidates and incumbents in their respective races. We’re happy to say that from the feedback received, both from our membership and the community at large, we accomplished these goals.

I have been coaching for longer than I care to remember and I see many similarities between teams and city councils. Both are groups of people brought together to work towards common goals. In order to reach those goals, the teams and their leaders need to set standards and expectations to allow the process to happen. That will lead to a successful outcome.

In fact, we expect councils to raise the standard for politics in the Tri-Cities just as we did with our new debate format. The Chamber has the following expectations of our city councils: • Councilors work together in collaboration to

research, justify and debate policy in good faith, with the interest of their constituents at the forefront; • Councilors move forward beyond their differences to ensure the dialogue is focused on the issues and not on personal agendas to move our cities forward; • Councilors reach out to their respective business communities and work with them to assist in strengthening the economic landscape of our region; • Councils share with their counterparts

in other municipalities and other levels of government to better the Tri-Cities community as a whole.

Our expectations are clear and quite simple. Our desire is to see city councils that collaborate, both within their city and within the Tri-Cities as a whole, in order to make our entire community a better place to live, work and play.

Something New Expect Something New from Rodos Kouzina!

Almost a year passed since “Rodos Kouzina Mediterranean Grille” restaurant came under new management. The beloved Port Moody establishment with its take-out/ delivery outlet “Pegasus Pizza” has been around for a quarter-century.

A lot has changed since last November. Renovations are complete at “Pegasus”, but the most important changes are not visible to the customers. They have happened in the kitchen area. There is lots of new equipment and shelving, but, most importantly, our experienced crew came under the supervision of the new chef, John Kourtesis.

John joined the restaurant in February, bringing with him a treasure trove of experience in Greek cuisine and

fine dining. Consistency and a high quality is his motto. Food presentation under John’s guidance improved dramatically and our customers took a note. They love the aesthetics as much as the taste of our lamb, moussaka, soups, desserts and many other dishes. A new lunch and delivery/take-out menugive more options to our customers and we’re looking forward to a new dinner menu and wine list very soon!

Rodos is one of a handful of restaurants in Lower Mainland that offers live music.

Join us every Friday and Saturday for Dine and Dance Night with popular singer Frankie Pokorny, who brings to life your all-time favorites. Twice a month, usually on Wednesdays, we host Jazz Night.
