ally from liquor sales. Anton said she doesn’t expect substantial changes in retail prices. The B.C. Government Employees Union, representing government liquor store staff, welcomed the Sunday openings and increased hours to help their stores compete. “The move to a single wholesale price will only be in the public interest if it protects and expands over time provincial revenue,” said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. Premier Christy Clark said the government’s liquor policy review showed “people really like their government liquor stores” because of the wide selection and well-trained staff. Clark agreed with Smith that government stores are well positioned to compete with private outlets, which are generally not unionized and pay lower wages. The government is also changing its tax system for breweries to eliminate the steep increase that applies when small breweries reach a certain level of production. Anton said that is designed to encourage growth of craft breweries, which currently employ 2,500 people in B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch officials are also working on a system of higher prices for high-alcohol beverages, a measure long recommended by Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall to discourage overconsumption.
Wood stove rebates The Province is providing $190,000 to communities throughout British Columbia to encourage residents to replace their old wood stoves with cleaner burning models. Together thirteen communities/regional districts are receiving funding from the Ministry of Environment through the Wood Stove Exchange Program. The goal is to have close to 630 stoves exchanged across the province this coming year. The Kootenay Boundary region is on the list of communities/ regional districts receiving grants for the 201415 wood exchange program. The program provides a $250 rebate on the purchase of a new wood-burning, pellet or natural gas stove.

As we celebrate International Education Week, it’s a good oppor-

Essential Cholesterol
Much of what we believe to be true about the dangers of cholesterol is false and the demonization of this crucial molecule is not only unjustified, it is dangerous. Cholesterol is essential for the body and has many health benefits. In fact, approximately 80% of the cholesterol in your body is made by your liver with only 20% coming from your diet. Every cell in your body is made with cholesterol and all of your steroid hormones, including the sex and adrenal hormones, are made from it too. Cholesterol makes hormones that help us cope with stress, metabolize carbohydrates, maintain healthy blood pressure, make vitamin D (not to mention make babies through the manufacture of testosterone, progesterone, estrogen and DHEA). Memory, the rate we age, our bone health, calcium metabolism and immune function are also profoundly mediated by cholesterol and the molecules cholesterol makes. Further, the notion that there is 'good' cholesterol
and 'bad' cholesterol is very misleading. In fact, HDL and LDL are not even cholesterol, they are fatty proteins that carry cholesterol to and from the liver. Consider that you would die were it not for LDL, the so called 'bad' cholesterol, and you can appreciate that it can't be that 'bad'. The reason LDL cholesterol got its 'bad' moniker it that it is responsible for carrying cholesterol from the liver, where cholesterol is made, to the peripheral tissues where cholesterol can form plaque and block arteries. Recall from last week's article that cholesterol is the bodies bandaid (aka plaque), used to help protect and repair damaged blood vessels. It is because cholesterol is involved in plaque (bandaid) formation that it has such a bad rap. However, blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming the bandaid for the cut you got while carving the turkey. The real question should be what is causing the damage to the blood vessel wall in the first place. More on this topic next week.

Hospitals in Fernie, Invermere, Creston, Golden and Cranbrook received some surprise gifts for their maternity units this week when Telus Community Ambassadors (East Kootenay) dropped by EKFH to deliver baby bags and Telus Critters for the area hospitals. The baby bags are an ongoing priority for the Telus Ambassadors who make up bags for needy families that include infant items, hand-knit sweaters and much more. The regional Telus Baby Bag Program has been underway for the past several years and is a welcomed addition on the maternity floors of
all the regional facilities. Telus Community Ambassador’s President Edith Leclair and Charlene Rothwell (Baby Bag Program Chair) brought some additional goodies this visit with a supply of cuddly Telus Critters for the maternity units and the regional hospital emergency department and psychiatry unit. An ever bigger surprise was for EKFH when the two presented the foundation with a donation of $690.29 from the Telus Foundation & Community Connections for EKFH’s annual Starlite Campaign. To donate to your local or regional hospital go to www.ekfh.ca.

Wildsight welcomes water quality plan Submitted “Wildsight welcomes the approval of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan by the British
Columbia Ministry of Environment,” said John Bergenske, Wildsight’s Conservation Director. The plan addresses water quality reduction
Monday, November 24, 2014 Kootenay News Advertiser and diminished health of fish and biodiversity in the Elk River as the result of coal mining. “We’re past the stage of simply identifying a problem,” Bergenske said. “Teck recognizes the issues and is taking responsibility to improve water quality
in the Elk River. I am confident that success is possible, but only with ongoing monitoring and adapting new strategies as more information becomes available. This problem took decades to reach the critical point we are now at, but the negative
trend in water quality has to be reversed right away. Teck is the only one in a position to do this effectively over time.” The Plan establishes short, medium and long-term water quality targets that will protect the environment and human health against selenium, nitrate, sulphate and cadmium, as well as a plan to manage calcite formation. The approved Plan will guide future regula-
tory decision making regarding water quality and mining in the Elk Valley. Wildsight has participated in public and Technical Advisory Committee meetings that led to recommendations to the Minister of Environment. “The serious concern over the health of fish and other organisms in the Elk River are not going to go away, but there is increased confidence that Teck’s com-

mitment to both water treatment facilities and long-term plans will lead to a reduction in the levels of selenium and other toxins in the river. The Ktunaxa Nation has played a key role in keeping the health of the Elk River front and centre throughout the process to date. And while a lot of questions remain unanswered, there is now a process in place to address ongoing concerns.”

Driving while drugged is an easy way to cause an accident Submitted
Over the years many awareness campaigns have taken centre stage during the holidays to remind revelers about the dangers of drunk driving. But the risks of drug-impaired driving are less known to the general public, even though a lot of damage has been wrought by these illegal substances. New campaigns are now aiming to raise public awareness about the risks involved with all kinds of impaired driving and highlight the potential harms to driver, passengers, other cars, and pedestrians
when someone is operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. EFFECTS OF DRUGS All drugs are a potential danger where driving is concerned. For example, cannabis, or pot, has numerous effects on the driver: difficulty concentrating; poor perception of surroundings; loss of coordination; difficulty in maintaining a straight line, driving at a constant speed, and estimating distances; slowed reaction time; hesitant driving; and lack of ability to handle the unexpected.
What to do if your teen is on drugs
In addition, stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines produce high risk behaviour, a false feeling of confidence, inattention, and loss of coordination. DRUG DETECTION Law enforcement authorities are presently informing the pub-
lic that they are now trained to detect drugimpaired drivers. The police can ask a driver to take a coordination test, the results of which can be confirmed later by an expert in drug recognition at the police station.

them. Instead, have a discussion about the reasons that led him to take drugs in the first place. Help him to get the correct information about drugs, let him know the range of resources he has at his disposal to get help, and tell him that he can count on your support. There is no point in giving him orders or trying to protect him in spite of himself. The right attitude to adopt is that of a guide. ACCOUNTABILITY It is a mistake to cover up mistakes or misdemeanours your teenager has committed under the influence of drugs. It is important to let him face the consequences of his actions. He must face his debts, justify his absences from school himself, and deal with the consequences

Supporting East Kootenay Drug Awareness Week "You Have A Choice" One of your worst fears has materialized—your teen is using drugs. But it’s useless to feel guilty or to panic. Ignoring the situation is not the right way to go either. It is far better to approach the problem with discussion, understanding, and accountability. DISCUSSION Approach the subject calmly with your teen when he or she is not under the influence of drugs. Make him aware of your suspicions. Rather than criticize, express what you feel about the situation, whether it’s anxiety, incomprehension, or fear. Give him your support and encourage him to find his own solutions for stopping the drug use. UNDERSTANDING If your child is not of the opinion that taking drugs is a problem, do not try to force him outright to stop using
