Interior 9-1-1 service transfered to E-Comm Submitted

As of 10:33 a.m. today, 9-1-1 calls from the Central and Southern Interiors are being answered by E-Comm—British Columbia’s largest 9-1-1 public-safety answer point. The changeover to E-Comm will be transparent to residents, who should dial 9-1-1 as usual. Calls will be routed to the same local police, fire and ambulance dispatchers who currently dispatch first responders to emergency situations. After four months of collaborative technical and operational planning that included the engineering, design and installation of new 9-1-1 infrastructure, the transfer of 9-1-1 services for the Central Okanagan, North Okanagan, Central Kootenay, ColumbiaShuswap, OkanaganSimilkameen, Thompson-Nicola, East Kootenay, Kootenay-Boundary and Squamish-Lillooet (North) regional districts occurred seamlessly. Representatives from the new service areas were onsite at E-Comm to witness the official cutover. “This is a significant event for all nine interior regional districts involved,” said Regional District of Central Okanagan Chair Robert Hobson. “Public safety is always our top priority. E-Comm’s outstanding track record means residents will receive the same high-quality level of service they are accustomed to, but with added operational and technical benefits. These include a larger workforce to handle high call volume and increased security and resiliency.” Hobson added that there will also be significant cost savings for each of the regional districts. The approximately 230,000 emergency calls placed each year from the regional districts will now be routed to E-Comm, where highly-trained 9-1-1 call-takers will quickly confirm which agency the caller requires and for which location. Police calls will then be transferred to the same dispatchers in Kelowna, fire calls will continue to be dispatched by centres in Cranbrook, the Fraser

and Vernon while ambulance calls will continue to be managed by the BC Ambulance Service’s dispatch centre in Kamloops. Part of the robust preparations surrounding this morning’s transition included more than 240 test calls across all regional districts. Geography familiarization was also a priority for E-Comm calltakers in the lead-up to today, with the many geographical and other special attributes of the new service area being a focus of their training

program, along with the policies and procedures for individual agencies. “9-1-1 is a lifeline, which is why thorough preparation was our top priority for today’s transition,” explained David Guscott, E-Comm President and CEO. “We’re eager, and ready, to share our large team of experienced 9-1-1 staff, our technology and purpose-built facility with residents in the Central and Southern Interiors and we are proud to be their partners in public safety.”

Bird Feeding

1. Sticking Around for Winter. In fall, we see the large flocks of songbirds gathering to head south. There are, however, some birds that stick around for the colder months. The frozen and snow covered ground makes it extremely difficult for them to get enough calories to keep their bodies warm during the cold months. 2. A Place to call Home. To survive the winter, birds need these things: shelter, food and water, and protection from predators. A stand of evergreen trees or shrubs creates great protection against wintry temperatures. One of the best evergreens for food, shelter and nesting is the pine; it is often home to chickadees, woodpeckers, blue jays and numerous other birds. 3. Water is Life. Like other animals, birds also need a good source of water to stay properly hydrated. You make your yard more attractive by providing a bowl with fresh water near the feeder. In the winter months, keeping the water flowing can become a bit more challenging. There are heated bowls and you can get birdbath de-icers to keep the water flowing. 4. Natural and Organic. Providing sources of food for birds can be easy for gardeners. Instead of tidying up the yard at the end of the fall season, leave the seed heads of purple coneflowers for finches to munch. Refrain from pruning or deadheading the last of the roses, leaving the Vitamin-C rich rose hips for the birds. Birds will also feast on the blue- black berries of Virginia creepers, the red fruits of cotoneasters, shriveled crabapples left on the tree and many other fruit. 5. Don’t Suet the Small Stuff. If there is not an abundance of natural bird food in your yard, you might want to supplement with a good quality seed mix. Sunflower seeds and peanuts both have a high fat content and can easily provide the extra calories and most birds in our area enjoy them. Suet is another good way of ensuring wintering birds get the fat content they need. Commonly sold in the shape of cakes, balls or bells, suet is a mix of fat, bird seed and nuts and can easily be hung almost anywhere. 6. Chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee. One of the most commonly recognized birds, chickadees can easily be identified by their call. Chickadees prefer wooded areas, but they are also quite content in backyard hedges and birdhouses that can protect them from the elements. They enjoy a diet of black oil sunflower seed and are voracious eaters of insects – a very good reason to keep them around all year long. 7. Wood is not for Eating. Woodpeckers frequent a wide variety of habitats and a woodpecker’s diet includes fruit, nuts, corn, ants, tent caterpillars, grasshoppers and many kinds of flying insects. They change their diets according to what food sources are most abundant and forage in the air, on the ground, and in trees. They often poke into crevices and chips at the bark of trees, searching for insects, but not “eating” wood. 8. I’m not Upside-Down. You Are! The favourite winter foods of the nuthatch are black oil sunflower, suet, sunflower chips and skinless peanuts. Nuthatches will often forage together with other birds in a group known as a foraging guild. They will occasionally feed on the ground, and readily visit feeding stations. You can pick them out easily, because they frequently descend tree trunks head-first and can hang upsidedown beneath twigs and branches. 9. Feeders Galore. There are many different kinds of bird feeders. A good feeder to hang out for nuthatches, chickadees and woodpeckers is a tube style feeder, with big enough ports for the preferred variety of seed, or a screened-sided tube feeder. Upside-down suet feeders are also a great choice for all three. If squirrels are an issue in your yard, you might want to look at a squirrel-proof feeder. 10. Winter Birdwatching. Each year around Christmas, bird watchers across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean take an informal head-count of the birds in their neighbourhood in the Christmas Bird Count. For more information on the individual counts, you can go to the website of the British Columbia Field Ornithologists at http:// bcfo.ca.

New rules coming for local election spending

(Kootenay East) Province of British Columbia

3 Facts you need to Know About...

The LNG Rate 1.

2.

3.

The Province and BC Hydro announced the rate for all LNG customers that want to connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid and reached the first agreement under this new rate with LNG Canada. The LNG rate will start at $83.02 per megawatt hour – about 50% more than the standard industrial rate – this will ensure that LNG customers cover the full cost of new energy required. Recently, Fortis broke ground on an expansion of its Tilbury LNG facility in Delta. The expansion will significantly increase natural gas liquefaction and storage capacity to support growing demand for B.C. LNG. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes. by Tom Fletcher Municipal election campaigns are like mushrooms that pop up every few years, with voters still in the dark about who’s fertilizing

them with how much money. That’s why the B.C. government waited until the first elections for four-year municipal terms were held to examine how campaign

spending should be regulated, says Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development. Oakes promised there will be new rules on

Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project – Public Comments Invited November 14, 2014 — As part of the strengthened and modernized Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012) put in place to support the government's Responsible Resource Development Initiative, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) commenced a federal environmental assessment for the proposed Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project, located in British Columbia (B. C.). The Agency invites the public to comment on which aspects of the environment may be affected by this project and what should be examined during the environmental assessment. The public can review and comment on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines, a document that identifies the potential environmental effects to be taken into consideration, and the information and analysis that needs to be included in the proponent’s EIS. Written comments must be submitted by December 14, 2014 to: Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency 410-701 West Georgia Street Vancouver, British Columbia V7Y 1C6 Telephone: 604-666-2431 Fax: 604-666-6990 Coal.Mountain@ceaa-acee.gc.ca To view the draft EIS Guidelines or for more information, visit the Agency’s website at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca (Registry reference number 80086). Copies of the draft EIS Guidelines are also available for viewing at the following locations: Elkford Public Library 816 Michel Rd. Elkford, B. C.

Sparwood Public Library 110 Pine Ave. Sparwood, B. C.

Fernie Public Library 492 3rd Ave. Fernie, B. C.

Cranbrook Public Library 1212 2nd St. N. Cranbrook, B. C.

Consistent with the transparency and public engagement elements of CEAA 2012, this is the second of four opportunities for the public to comment on this project. All comments received will be considered public. Following this comment period, the Agency will finalize and issue the EIS Guidelines to the proponent. An application period for participant funding and a future public comment period on the proponent’s EIS will be announced at later dates. Projects subject to CEAA 2012 are assessed using a science-based approach. If the project is permitted to proceed to the next phase, it will continue to be subject to Canada’s strong environmental laws, rigorous enforcement and follow-up, and fines for non-compliance. The Proposed Project Teck Coal Limited is proposing to expand its existing Coal Mountain Operations. The Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project, an open-pit coal mine, would be located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 15 kilometers south of Sparwood, and 20 kilometers northwest of the proponent's current operations. The proposed project would include an approximate disturbance area of 1 000 hectares, and would produce approximately 2.25 million metric tonnes of clean coal per year over an estimated mine life of 34 years.

spending and donations from property developers, unions and other donors to municipal council and school board candidates by the next province-wide municipal vote in 2018. A legislature committee started working on it in October, with recommendations due by Nov. 27. “What we found is that for a lot of the organizations, if you’re not in election mode, they are not formed,” Oakes said. “So we knew that if we were to do stakeholder engagement, we need to do it when the elections were happening.” Some urban municipalities see substantial campaign donations from special interests, with only the requirement of disclosure long after votes are counted. In Vancouver, where developers and civic worker unions spend heavily, Mayor Gregor Robinson’s

Vision Vancouver party and challenger Kirk Lapointe’s NonPartisan Association were pushed to voluntarily disclose their major donors before Saturday’s vote. Imposing campaign reform on local governments is an awkward task for the ruling B.C. Liberals, who have refused to give up their multi-million-dollar advantage in corporate donations over the NDP and other challengers. NDP leader John Horgan said Monday the opposition will soon table its annual private member’s bill calling for the elimination of corporate and union donations from provincial campaigns, as has been done in other provinces and at the federal level.

Seeking input on area coal project C a n a d i a n Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012) put in place to support the government’s Responsible Resource Development Initiative, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) must decide whether a federal environmental assessment is required for the proposed Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project, located approximately 12 kilometres from the District of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia. To assist it in making its decision, the Agency is seeking comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. Written comments must be submitted by December 8, 2014 to: Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project C a n a d i a n Environmental Assessment Agency, 410-701 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, British Columbia V7Y 1C6. Telephone: 604-666-2431. Fax: 604-666-6990. CrownMountain@ceaaacee.gc.ca Projects subject to CEAA 2012 are assessed using a science-based approach. If the project

is permitted to proceed to the next phase, it will continue to be subject to Canada’s strong environmental laws, rigorous enforcement and follow-up, and fines for non-compliance. Quick Facts The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is seeking public comments on the summary of the project description for the proposed Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project, located approximately 12 kilometres from the District of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia. The summary of the project description and more information on this project are available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry website, reference number 80087. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will post a decision on its website stating whether an environmental assessment is required. If it is determined that an environmental assessment is required, the public will have three more opportunities to comment on this project, consistent with the transparency and public engagement elements of CEAA 2012.

College employee recognized with BCCAT Rising Star award

Photo submitted

College of the Rockies’ Articulation Officer, Karen Langan, proudly shows off her BCCAT Rising Star award. Submitted College of the Rockies’ Articulation Officer, Karen Langan has been awarded the BC Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) Rising Star award at their joint annual meeting on November 14. The Rising Star Award recognizes an individual who, while early on in her career, demonstrates exceptional leadership and accomplishment in the area of

transfer and articulation within the BC Transfer System. To be eligible, the recipient must have worked in the area of articulation for five years or less. Since becoming articulation officer, Langan’s achievements include updating the College’s transfer credit policy, developing College-wide articulation procedures and policies, maintaining an online database of provincial and international block transfer agree-

ments on the College website and setting up numerous tracking systems to ensure smooth transfer credit processes for students. Some of the policies and procedures developed by Langan at COTR have been shared across the BCCAT system. “I find my position as Articulation Officer at COTR to be very rewarding,” Langan explains. “In my role I am able to help support student mobility between institutions which, in turn, offers them more options for their educational pathways. To be recognized by my peers for this work is an honour.” Articulation involves comparing the content of courses offered at College of the Rockies with courses at other post-secondary institutions to determine transferability of courses or programs from one institution to another. Langan not only searches out opportunities for students to transfer into College of the Rockies programs but also finds other institutions for College of the Rockies students to transfer to if they wish to complete a credential not available

at the College. Langan is well respected by her colleagues at the College, with Dean of Instruction Darrell Bethune saying, “Karen has been meticulous and zealous in her approach to ensuring College of the Rockies courses receive articulation. She is a valued colleague and worthy recipient of the BCCAT Rising Star Award. She has a rare ability to manage the many details of developing transfer agreements and within the College has shown tremendous teamwork in supporting the work for faculty, staff and administrators. Ultimately, students are the beneficiaries when they use the transfer agreements Karen has set up.” The BC Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) oversees the BC Transfer System, enabling important links between the BC post-secondary institutions, the education ministries, and the public and private education sectors. RCMP seeking help in vehicle theft Cranbrook RCMP were advised of a theft that occurred some time between the 10th and 12th of November. A hunter was travelling somewhere near the 19 Kilometre mark of Boulder Creek Forest Service Rd when his vehicle broke down. The hunter packed out what he could on foot, but ended up leaving some rather expensive items behind in the vehicle. The vehicle was left blocking most of the road way. It is believed at some point on the 11th of November, one or more persons found the broken down vehicle, and decided to steal its contents. Some items taken include: *Green Swarovski Binoculars valued at $2500 *Husqvarna 353 Chainsaw with a 20” bar *Laser Range finder At present the RCMP have no suspects to this crime. As it is hunting season, there were likely people in the area who saw the

vehicle blocking the road or who have personal knowledge of the event. The Cranbrook RCMP are request-

ing the publics assistance in identifying the person(s) responsible. It is requested that any person having informa-

tion on this theft call the Cranbrook RCMP, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

What to do with school boards? B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The saddest manifestation of British Columbia’s modern democracy has produced its judgment, with the election of school trustees for the next four years. There are still independent, communityminded trustees, but mostly “boards of education” have become the neglected, exploited stepchild of B.C. politics. Teacher union locals and CUPE-dominated “labour councils” organize candidate forums

and ask most of the questions, often to former teachers holding and seeking school board seats. Unions finance the campaigns of those who pledge to act as a bullhorn for constant demands for more provincial money, and instruct their members to vote for what should be called the Conflict of Interest slate. This has been going on for so long in B.C. it is seen as normal. Trustees who most loudly plump for their union masters tend to win, thanks to low turnout. The public mostly

doesn’t give a damn, since school property tax authority was centralized in Victoria many years ago, largely because of this special interest pressure. The classic case is in Coquitlam, where one could almost hear the theme from The Godfather as local CUPE boss Dave Ginter appeared before the board of education in February. He informed the elected trustees that their collective financial acumen wasn’t up to his standards and some of them would have to go this fall. “Obviously, the chore I have is to find new trustees,” Ginter clarified in an interview with the Tri-City News as the union’s candidate selection machine

stirred to life. Ginter seems to have made them an offer they couldn’t refuse on Saturday, with formerly union-blessed trustees turfed out in favour of a new group. Then there’s Vancouver Island, where the 1970s survived, at least until Saturday night. Cowichan school board got itself fired by the province in 2012 for refusing to submit a balanced budget. Two of the trustees who think the job is to flout the balanced budget rule and instead demand a “needs budget” ran again. They were joined on a slate by two others who apparently still believe the answer to every problem is to shout

for “more government funding.” They didn’t get in, as voters appear to have been unimpressed by seeing their school board replaced by a provinciallyappointed manager for two years. That brings up a modest proposal. How about an appointed trustee for each of the 60 school districts? School boards have lost authority over taxation, curriculum (another area of constant union social engineering pressure) and now labour relations. Do we really need them any more? After the 2013 B.C. election, the Christy Clark government wasted no time taking control of union bargaining on behalf of school districts. Trustees were

pushed out of the bargaining agency, no longer trusted to represent taxpayers for that duty either. The puppet role of some school trustees was evident in the recent teacher strike. When the province opted to pay parents for the disruption, there was a chorus of protest from those supposedly elected to represent the interests of parents and taxpayers. School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those

liquefied natural gas plants.) Would Education Minister Peter Fassbender and his team continue their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings may become something more than union beef sessions. Share-a-Bear campaign is looking to make the season warmer

Photo submitted

The Share-a-Bear campaign is on again. BC Liquor Stores are encouraging British Columbians to give to those less fortunate this holiday season by participating in the 25th annual Share-a-Bear campaign. “This year marks 25 successful Share-aBear campaigns - that

is 25 years of bringing smiles and comfort to those less fortunate, in communities throughout B.C. This is a fine example of the Liquor Distribution Branch’s dedication to social responsibility, and I invite customers to support local charities dur-

ing the holiday season through this year’s campaign,” said Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton. From now until Christmas, or while quantities last, customers can buy a Share-aBear for $12 at any BC Liquor Store and have its ‘twin’ teddy bear donated to a local community charity. Each year, BC Liquor Store employees select charities in their communities that help families in need - from children’s charities to shelters and hospitals - and deliver donated Share-a-Bears over the holidays. This year’s Share-aBears are plush whiteand-black teddy bears dressed in bright red, puffy vests featuring a sparkling snowflake on the lapel. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Sharea-Bear campaign is one of the ways the

BC Liquor Distribution Branch demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility in com-

munities across the province. Quick Facts: * Last year, BC

Your experiences on local child care options are requested Submitted Children and families in Canada have a right to access quality, affordable child care services. Yet, only 20% of young children today have access to a regulated space and, in many regions, child care fees are the second highest expense for families. Early childhood educators also have a right to be socially valued and properly paid for their work, yet ECE professionals earn about half as much, on average, as other college-trained workers. From grandparents to economists, working parents to student parents, health care professionals to social workers, early childhood educators to university professors – and so many others – everyone has a child care story.

The East Kootenay Child Care Needs Assessment Task Force has secured funding enabling us to hire Jane Boyd (45 Conversations, a media and education company) with significant connections and experience in the early learning and child care field. Canadians have been debating child care for years: How much? What kind? Who pays? We’ve heard from politicians and experts. The EK Child Care Needs Assessment Task Force wants to hear from parents/caregivers, grand parents, business owners, Early Childhood Educators, all stakeholders that have an interest or need for child care. As part of the East Kootenay Child Care Needs Assessment, we are pleased to move forward with the online

survey component of this project. This work will be completed in two phases. The survey is intended to identify the child care needs in the East Kootenay region and to prioritize those needs through a plan for action. Phase One will run from now through the end of 2014; with a final report being issued shortly thereafter. Planning for the funding and implementation of Phase Two is already underway. We want you to be part of the East Kootenay Conversations on Child Care. You can access the survey at http://45conversations. com/east-kootenaychild-care-survey/ or by visiting www. EKkids.ca. No Access to the Internet? Please share this link with as many individuals as possible who may have an interest with child

care issues in the East Kootenay region of BC. If someone does not have access to the internet from their home, we encourage them to: – visit their local library where they should be able to access a computer and internet for no cost (provided they have a library

card). Please see this link for information on local library locations http://klf.bclibrary.ca/ KLF-libraries – for those in Cranbrook, contact Street Angels at 250420-2756 to arrange for internet access in order to complete the survey. The East Kootenay

Child Care Needs Assessment Task Force wishes to thank the Columbia Basin Trust, Success By Six, Children First, East Kootenay Child Care Resource and Referral and 45 Conversations for their funding and in-kind contributions toward this project. For additional infor-

mation about the EK Child Care Needs Assessment, please contact Patricia Whalen, Children First Manager at 250-4262542 or at ekidsfirst@ shaw.ca, or contact Jane Boyd at boydwfl@gmail.com.

ness, virtuosity, and the brilliance of pieces like ‘The Trojan Horse’ and ‘Winter’. A fresh chinook blows out of the west.” Verismo recorded for CBC’s Jazz Beat in 2005 and has appeared at the Calgary International Jazz Festival among many other venues. As head of the U of C music department from 2003 to 2008, Dr. Jeremy Brown led the creation of the Monday Night Jazz Concert Series in Calgary among several other musical accomplishments. As a saxophone soloist he has made many recordings of classical music, including for the CBC, and has appeared as the featured soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He has toured across Canada, the USA, Europe, and Japan as a conductor, saxophonist, lecturer, clinician, and adjudicator and has received many glowing personal reviews. The word ‘verismo’ is a post-Romantic term meaning ‘realism’, from the Italian word ‘vero’ meaning ‘true’. It describes operatic music such as that by Henry Purcell and writing such as Emile Zola’s that deals with the realities of everyday life, particularly of the lower classes of the early 20th century. It seems an appropriate name for a jazz band, jazz having risen from the levees of Louisiana as the popular dance music of African American working people of the same period. Originally called ‘ragtime’ it soon became known as New Orleans jazz or Dixieland jazz. The evolution of jazz since those early years has seen it go through many manifestations including swing, bebop, cool jazz, free jazz, latin, funk, and modern jazz and a host of other offshoots, making it a difficult genre to define. This season Centre 64 has featured the smooth jazz of the Neville Bowman trio with Kinga Heming and the jazz funk of the Melody Diachun Quartet. Verismo promises yet another interpretation of the jazz genre with two tenor saxaphones, grand piano, upright bass, and drums. Tickets are available from Centre 64 (250427-4919) or online at www.eventbrite.ca. As seating is limited and the last concert sold out, you’d be well advised to get your tickets early, $22 for Kimberley Arts Council members, $24 for non-members in advance, $26 at the door if still available.

Max & Ruby bring The Nutcracker Suite to the Key City Theatre

Bring your kids to see Max & Ruby at the Key City Theatre. Max & Ruby in The Nutcracker Suite, are coming to the Key City Theatre on November 26. Max & Ruby bring to life a wonderful tradition this holiday season as they take to the stage their most magical performance yet! Inspired by one of the greatest musical scores ever composed – Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite – the beloved bunny siblings star in Koba Entertainment’s brand new musical production Max & Ruby in the Nutcracker Suite. It’s Christmas Eve, and Ruby is busy trimming the tree, while Max is chasing the delicious scent of Grandma’s freshly baked gingerbread cookies! A knock at the door reveals a huge parcel from their Great Uncle Drosselmeyer. As the package is unwrapped, Ruby realizes that each new toy is from the story of the Nutcracker Ballet, including a Nutcracker doll! As Grandma reads the story of the Nutcracker, their imaginations whisk them away to a magical land where they become characters in the beloved ballet. Dancing, singing and delicious treats follow, as the bunny pair experiences the wonder and excitement of the classic Nutcracker story. Whether it was the

sweets, or their lively imaginations, the bunny siblings head off to bed with visions of candy canes dancing in their heads! Max & Ruby’s

All are welcome to come in, see, listen, pray, and stay for lunch.

Hugs: To the staff of Amy Woodland school for one of the nicest Remembrance Day assemblies I’ve been to in years.

woman from the medical clinic because she had the nerve to walk there instead of hiring a cab, shame on you, I hope this never happens to your mother.

Hugs: Want to give a gigantic hug to the PAC group at Kootenay Orchards School for the most awesome Halloween carnival ever. So much work put in and everyone enjoyed, hats off to you.

Slugs: To the person driving the white Honda Ridgeline who caused damage to my vehicle when leaving the Canadian Tire parking lot on Sunday, November 16. Shame on you for leaving the scene.

Slugs: To vehicles, mostly the truckers who “gun it” close to intersections when the traffic lights have turned amber long before they get to it. Case In point is the Willowbrook/Cranbrook Street Strip. So many close calls, one of these days there will be a real tragedy. Have witnessed incidents there more times than I care to, am I the only one to see this?

Slugs: Big slugs go to the people that attend hockey games for not leaving their swear words at home, come on people there are children that go there, and it is a terrible example to be setting.

Hugs: To Kal Tire for fabulous customer service. Brought my car in Monday the day of the snow blizzard, place was packed, they promised they would not go home until they had the snow tires on the car. We picked up our car at 12:30 am!!! They did not turn anyone away, what business does that!! Slugs: To the delivery service in town that would not release a parcel because the driver didn’t have the correct information that the parcel was prepaid. We asked if we could pick it up at the end of the day or if someone could re-deliver it and they said “possibly”. They did not go out of their way to help a customer out. Slugs: To the Fernie Taxi Driver who refused to pick-up an 87 year old

Hugs: To the residents of Cranbrook for voting in a complete new slate of council members. Let’s make Cranbrook a city that people love to live in rather than a city of sky rocketing property taxes. Slugs: A slug to the companies that installed (Oct 29th) a High Intensity Flashing Strobe Light on the power line towers on Kootenay Lake. We now have Lightning invading our home and area every 1.25 seconds 24/7 compounded by low lying cloud cover and fog. I wonder what the area animals think, Oh well who needs animals around. It’s completely ruined the evening hours and heaven help any epileptic’s in the area. Take it down or make it a constant light!!! Thank you, Blinded by the Light Hugs: Big hugs to Jeremy at Neno’s Paint & Body Shop for repainting my Nissan after a job from 10 years ago. Thanks for your great service!

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

A fishing tale to top them all By Ian Harwood

Is it practical? ‘‘– Maybe not,

but it sure would look cool to take it fishing and show off to your buddies.

Ian Harwood

With the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show wrapping up last week in Las Vegas, I thought I would share with you an interesting vehicle that was on display and caught my eye – the 2014 Toyota Tundra Ultimate fishing vehicle. Bassmaster Elite Series pro angler, Britt Myers wanted a Toyota Tundra equipped with everything you would want to go fishing and I think he got his wish. It is painted in a matte gray finish from front to back with yellow and black tribal graphics. Front bumper is made by Fab Fours and comes

with PIAA fog and driving lights. There is a Warn 15000lb winch tucked inside this massive bumper. Rolling big power provided the custom grille. Bushwacker fender flares help cover the 37” tall Nitto mud grappler tires mounted on 22” Moto metal black rims. The folks at Pro Comp suspension provided the 6” suspension lift. It features a MX 2.75c series coil over front shocks and MX6 adjustable rear shocks.

In case you are wondering, how you would get in this thing, Bestop has built a running board step that raises and lowers automatically when you open and close the doors. A smaller step folds down manually just in front of the rear tires. This helps you reach the custom-made roof rack cargo basket. The cargo basket has Rigid 50” LED lights recessed in the front, back and sides, giving plenty of light to see all

around. The canopy is built by Leer and has painted fiberglass panels replacing the windows. The rear is truly unique. The canopy gate and vehicle tailgate are connected and attached to a rolling platform that slides out to carry a beverage fridge, tool compartment, fishing tackle, and more! It looks like a showroom out of a fishing store. The cabin features all black factory leather seats with a custom made center console.

Instead of cup holders, a panel of switches takes its place where the driver can easily access the various powered equipment. The dash features a graphic montage of fish skeletons to get you in the mood. The door panels are equipped with twin speakers and a fish finder monitor. I guess you would have to dip the front tire in the river to make it work. The factory 5.7-litre engine has been upgraded to feature

a Toyota racing development supercharger and a cold air intake. A custom exhaust system by MBRP finishes off the engine compartment. Fuel economy? – If you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Is it practical? – Maybe not, but it sure would look cool to take it fishing and show off to your buddies. Sticker price: $125,000, to a Redneck . . . Priceless. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

It’s all about gaining traction for Subaru, not just on the pavement but also in terms of sales. For Subaru, traction and sales are related. When Subaru decided to switch its entire lineup of cars to all wheel drive (AWD) back in 1995, the company never looked back. (That was also the year Subaru introduced the Outback sport wagon.) Back

Subaru Imprezas on Okanagan ice and snow ment. Sold a sedan or hatchback, both cars now have a sharper, more defined look. But Subaru also wanted to make a statement with what cannot be seen, the way the car is put together. One of the main areas of focus was sound insulation and reduced cabin noise. Stories of the wine pickers getting ready for the ice-wine harvest makes it as appealing and delicious as ever. The Impreza had a similar one-dimensional attitude before this new model arrived. Yes, it is one of the most practical designs, with big doors

that make getting in and out a breeze, the huge windows make outward visibility impressive but the car lacked sophistication. For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedying the situation. Driving over ice covered roads on the way to Big White Ski Resort and then getting to push the Impreza as hard as it would allow on a snow covered handling course, gives a great sense of confidence in the cars AWD system. Traction is not an issue, the limit is really only defined by the type of tires the car is equipped with. For ultimate bite, a good set of winter tires along with the AWD system is impressive. The 148hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is carried over from the last car but now it is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV), and the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States claims it is the “cleanest gas car on the market”, helping to reduce

smog-forming pollutants. Other changes include a reworked suspension and steering. The springs and dampening have been adjusted to reduce bouncing over big bumps and the steering ratio is quicker. This along with the much quieter interior makes this a good cruising car but the steering lacks feedback and under hard cornering, the car tends to under steer. The engine too is best suited for cruising; climbing mountain roads strained it at times. The good news is that enthusiast drivers have the excellent WRX as an option. Verdict

The 2015 Impreza is all about small changes to an already good car. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) now has a thicker casing for quieter operation and it now features pre-set steps to help mimic a conventional automatic. And manual transmission owners will be pleased to know that all trim levels can be equipped with a stick, but it is only a 5-speed. On the top two trim levels the Impreza can be equipped with EyeSight, Subaru’s collision mitigation system that can detect objects and pedestrians and will brake the car to a stop if the drive takes no action. This has proven to be popular with drivers and is something typically found in more expensive cars. What Subaru has not changed is the price. Starting at $19,995 and topping out at $30,295, there is a trim and price for many Canadian buyers. The added backup camera, improved interior and the bonus of a PZEV engine is all just an added benefit that should help Subaru get even more traction with buyers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Cold day, warm thoughts about two-wheelers The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.) It’s not a svelte bike by any stretch, so urban riding wasn’t my favourite. But on the open road, it is just a treat. It has an MSRP of $13,499. NC750XA

Ah, the NC750XA. A bike I’ve been dying to get on since the NC700s came out two years ago. It’s the more adventurous

Honda CB500XA By Alexandra Straub

Honda has had a big year. Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products. But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014. Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought. CBR650F

Don’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist. With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat. What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but

without the wrist and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride. Honda mentions that the development team included many engineers in their 20s. That’s a good thing, considering they want to attract a younger customer with the CBR650F. Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements. Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine. It comes in great colours like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eye-catching Candy Tahitian Blue The CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999. VFR800F

The wait is over and 2014 saw the re-introduction of the

VFR800F. The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork. Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new selfcancelling turn signals. In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque. The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sporttouring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades. The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4-VTEC engine allows for some great low-end power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face. Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve timing still operates one pair of inlet/ exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless.

of two NC models (the S and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6-inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position. This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise. For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder engine. With its engine mounted

low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-movearound type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank. Not bad. And it get’s better. With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compartment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest features of this bike. It has an MSRP of $8,199.

CB500XA

One member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjustable windscreen, open riding accommodations and largecapacity fuel tank. It has an MSRP of $6,049. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Five (more) movie clunkers By Grant Stoecker

Sequels are rarely as good as the first, but give this second round of clunkers from film and television a chance. Each of the following cars was selected based on reader comments. “Uncle Buck,” 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham: We all have that oddball relative — if you can’t think of one, well, it’s probably you. In 1989’s hit comedy, “Uncle Buck,” John Candy portrays Uncle Buck, an unemployed gambler charged with caring for his wealthy suburbanite brother’s children. While the children might find Uncle

Buck a bit odd, they find his ’75 Marquis downright revolting — and terrifying if standing anywhere near it when it backfires. “Columbo,” 1959 Peugeot 403 Cabriolet: This popular television series starred Peter Falk as disheveled detective Lieutenant Columbo. While most cops would opt to drive a service car, Columbo chooses to drive his personal car, a faded Peugeot 403 Cabriolet that often suffers from mechanical problems at inopportune moments. And just one more thing: The car was personally selected for the show by Falk, after he spotted it in a parking lot at Universal

This 1976 Pacer was the ride of choice for publicaccess cable stars Wayne and Garth in 1992’s cult classic “Wayne’s World.” While the Mirth Mobile, with its mismatched wheels and flame decals, is sure to make any car lover go “schwing,” the Pacer is often noted for its unique styling, courtesy of the famous designer Richard Teague. “Harper,” 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster: Who would have ever thought of Paul Newman driving a Porsche on the big screen? Sarcasm aside, Paul Newman’s eponymous character, Harper, is a wisecracking private investigator tasked with tracking down a kidnapped millionaire in the 1966 film of the same name. Harper’s decrepit Porsche 356 Speedster makes several appearances in the film, including a horrific tumble down a hill (at least for a Porschephile like myself). Fortunately it was not a true 356A Speedster, but a shell with exhaust tips attached. “Dude Where’s My Car,” 1979 Renault Le Car: In 2000’s so-bad-it’s-funny com-

ELLA MAY DOMIN It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ella May Domin, on November 12th, 2014. Her valiant fight with ovarian cancer has finally ended and she can now rest peacefully. Ella May Ingham was born July 12, 1928 in Cranbrook BC. She spent her childhood in Elko, later residing in Morrissey, Rampart, Galloway, Jaffray and finally Fernie. After leaving school, Ella worked in Elko and Fernie, as a housekeeper and a nanny until she met her husband Joseph Domin, married in 1946 and together they happily raised four children: Joanna (Walter) Fantuz, Marie Worthington, Wendy Johnson and Rodney (Deborah) Domin. She is also survived by grandchildren David, Brian and Christine Fantuz; Corlyn (Dean) Haarstad, Anissa and Kaitlyn; Bernice (Angus MacDonald) Wiebe, Jessica and Connor; Stephanie (Darcy) Hutchinson, Colton and Madison; Marvin (Stacie) Johnson, Corbin and Keenan; Jason (Stacey) Johnson, Sierra and Donovan; and Jordan Domin. Ella also leaves behind brothers Frank (Blanche) Ingham and Roger (Josie) Ingham, sisters Harriett (Sam) Cross, Carole (Gordon) Hallett, Ann (Lawrence) Corrigan and Francis (Rolly) Portman; plus many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ella was predeceased by (and truly missed) her husband Joe, her mother Wealtha, her father Carl and her step-mom Julia; her inlaws John and Theresa Domin; her brothers Edward and Thomas Ingham; her son-in-law John Worthington, grandson-in-law Jason Wiebe and her great-grandson Zeke Fantuz. Ella will be remembered for her sense of humour, but most of all for her love of family. She liked to have them all visit and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She doted on her grandchildren, recognizing each for their individuality; bragging about each of them whenever she had a chance. Ella liked to bake, to invent new dishes, to do puzzles to keep alert and to spend time with friends. We will all miss her dearly. Prayers were held on Monday, November 17, 2014 with Funeral Mass following on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 with Father Marcel Cote Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Children’s charity of your choice.
