Three new trustees could bring a major shift to the Greater Victoria board of education.

“I think the [election result] is going to change the direction of the board,” said current board chair Peg Orcherton.

Ann Whiteaker topped the polls with 20,252 votes. She will be joined by fellow newcomers Rob Paynter (18,926 votes) and Jordan Watters (16,658).

Orcherton (20,083 votes), will be joined by five other incumbents when the new board is sworn in Dec. 1: Deborah Nohr (20,177), Diane McNally (20,057), Elaine Leonard (17,855), Edith Loring-Kuhanga (17,389) and Tom Ferris (16,940).

“What I’d like to see is the board moving in the same direction, focusing on what benefits students, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen,” said Orcherton, She expects the three new trustees will side with three others currently at the table, something she fears will put “the benefit of the teachers’ union before the benefit of the students.”

Orcherton also expects the new balance of power will bring an end to her term as board chair.

Gingerbread artists create masterpieces Elaborate and tasty gingerbread creations will compete to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Victoria this holiday season.

The sixth annual Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase will be held at Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria from Nov. 22 to Jan. 4.

This year’s theme is Where Things Live and features more than 25 works of 100 per cent edible art by professional and home bakers.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite by donating to Habitat for Humanity Victoria, then casting their ballot.

Voting for the People’s Choice award closes on Jan. 4.

Last year, the event raised a record donation of over $21,500 for Habitat for Humanity Victoria. All funds go towards building new homes for low-income families in Victoria.

Postcards from the edge of history Victoria author Nick Russell takes a peek into the past with his new book Kevin Laird Victoria News

Victoria author Nick Russell has always been a collector.

He’s collected stamps, coins, antique tools and, yes, postcards.

So it’s not surprising that when he was looking at writing a new book on Victoria history, he turned to his collection of postcards.

“After living in Victoria for a few years and researching the city’s history, I was seeing a lot of nice, old postcards,” said the author of Glorious Victorians.

The idea for Russell’s newest book Victoria Then and Now: Postcards from the Past germinated as he was finishing Glorious Victorians three years ago. From, there he began collecting and researching for his new book.

Part of the research involved searching estate sales, thrift shops, antique stores, online and old newspapers for postcards. He

even found one postcard in the wall of a heritage house being demolished in James Bay. The book includes 35 pre-First World War postcards. Each heritage scene is complemented with an updated photo taken by Russell. He estimates he took more than 1,000 pictures for the project over a two-year period.

There is also a small written piece on each site and, if appropriate, what was written on the back of the postcard. “ Vi c t o r i a n s and Edwardians were great collectors of postcards,” Russell said. “They kept albums, they collected cards when they went on trips, asked friends to collect cards for them. A whole sub-culture of exchange took place.”

Russell chose the period before the First World War for his book because that was the height of the postcard era, when hundreds of thousands of postcards were made and mailed. It was the period of a lot of prosper-

ity in the region and tourism was booming.

Following the war, the economy slowed and the enthusiasm for postcards began to fall.

Russell has about 150 postcards in his collection, but dating the documents is a challenge. A legible stamp cancellation is a great help, but only indicates the card was probably then available. It may have been printed years before. Messages were not permitted on the earliest cards.

Another difficulty for Russell was trying to determine exact spot where a photo was taken. He was able to triangulate most shots but one was simply impossible. The problem? New buildings (or the lack of landmarks) and even vegetation overgrowth. With some shots he had to go back five times or more to get proper lighting, depth of field and even “to get the trees right.”

But this labour of love was worth it.

“I really like putting things out there and sharing them. It’s not for the money, heaven knows. I like contributing something to the community, so that it’s a little richer,” he said.

Only one Victoria city councillor, besides mayor-elect Lisa Helps, did not put her name forward for council this past election.

Shellie G u d geon was elected as a firstt i m e councillor in 2011, but decided not to run again this year.

“It’s been a complicated journey,” Gudgeon said. “This isn’t the best job I’ve ever had.”

Gudgeon said she did not feel welcome when she first entered city hall as a councillor, adding it was difficult to get support.

However, she eventually found her place.

“Where I found the most support was from our neighbour-

hoods and the organizations that I worked with.”

Gudgeon said she had to fight for many of the initiatives she believed were important for the city, including reducing speed limits on certain streets to 40 km/h.

“It was crazy how hard I had to fight to get that changed,” Gudgeon said. “That was fighting the culture of ‘no’ at the city.”

However, she calls that one of her proudest accomplishments on council. She is also proud to have been part of starting the conversation of amalgamation.

“One of the strongest successes I had was starting conversation. Typically what I found being on council for the last three years is, in order to survive as a politician, you stay away from the difficult issues. I brought the difficult issues to the public to discuss.”

Gudgeon said despite the challenges, she feels she accomplished what she set out to do on council. “I’ve learned so much about the depths of our community,” said Gudgeon.

“It’s been a privilege.”

Orcherton plans to call on the other trustees to present a united voice to advocate for the proper funding models so students get the education they deserve.

“With the chronic underfunding of education, we need to work together with one voice, not fighting amongst ourselves and with stakeholders groups, which allows the government to continue to abrogate their responsibilities,” she said.

Bev Horsman just missed out on her bid to become a trustee with 16,351 votes. Nicole Duncan (14,247), John Rizzuti (12,458) and Ruth MacIntosh (12,222) also fell short of gaining a spot on the ninemember board.

The Salvation Army’s annual kettle campaign kicks off Saturday (Nov. 22) at Uptown Plaza Square.

The campaign is the Salvation Army’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and runs until Dec. 24.

JOHN SEBASTIAN John Sebastian began officially as a carrier on September 5, 2012. Prior to that, he helped his friend Luke do the route on Craigdarroch beginning in September of 2010. He enjoys being a carrier, going around the neighbourhood seeing neighbours, people and animal friends, as well as the wildlife. He also feels the paper is important, that it ties our community together; when he is done his deliveries he sits down to read it. As for hobbies, he really likes to play sports, basketball, tennis, volleyball, but his biggest passion is SOCCER! He plays on both his school team as well as for Bays United FC. He is hoping his team will go to Sweden this summer to participate in the Gothia Cup, an international soccer tournament bringing together children from over 30 countries. His other passion is music, he plays the piano and just took up the saxophone. John Sebastian loves animals and is very kind to them. At school, he is a member of the Outreach Club, helping raise funds for school initiatives, and is great with the younger grades on the soccer pitch.

Herring sale comes to aid of sick kids

A local fish market will be selling thousands of pounds of fresh herring Nov. 29 to raise money for Fishermen Helping Kids with Cancer.

Finest At Sea will have 20,000 lbs. of herring for sale for the third year in a row, in support of B.C. Children’s Hospital. The first year the James Bay business brought in 10,000 lbs. of herring, and sold out in the first five hours of being open. The next year, it doubled the supply and raised around $15,000.

The fish is sold in 20 lbs. bags for $20 and 10 lbs. bags for $15. Customers are asked to bring their own buckets to take the fish home in.

This year, they hope to attract even more people and raise even more money.

“We want to raise as much money as possible,” said Paul Chaddock, Finest at Sea vicepresident. “That’s why we’re doing it; and to bring awareness to that specific organization.”

If they would like, customers can have their fish frozen, vacuum-packed or smoked for an extra charge. All of those

“It’s a fish that people can’t regularly get,” said Robert Fraumeni, owner of Finest at Sea. Along with the fresh herring, Finest at Sea will also be selling cooked herring from its food truck outside all day.

Those proceeds will also go to the charity.

From full ’mo to half ’mo Cancer survivor Rob Evans knows the benefit of events like Movember – even if he can’t grow a full moustache Andrea Peacock Victoria News

After a rigorous radiation cancer treatment, Rob Evans had all the hair follicles on the left-side permanently burned off. Now he has half a moustache to show for it, which he is using to raise awareness about the Movember Foundation.

After discovering a lump in his throat a couple months before his 50th birthday, Evans, now 60, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a head and neck cancer.

“The prognosis was not good,” said Evans.

Evans was due for surgery to remove the lymph nodes in his neck, which he said would have affected the mobility of his left arm in the long run. Instead, Evans received a treatment that had not been done in Victoria before, which involved a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.

“I chose to try it and save my lifestyle.”

But the treatment was extremely hard on Evans.

“At one point, my tongue was burned so badly [from the radiation], that I couldn’t

drink water. So I had to come up with a honey extract so that I could get enough fluid in.”

His doctors discovered the cancer was only on one side of his face, so that is where they directed the radiation.

Shortly after, Evans said he realized he didn’t need to shave on the left side of his face, which he said was a bonus.

“But I’m not really the type that gets up every day and shaves every morning,” he said. “So it created kind of an interesting look for me, and I embraced that. I thought it was kind of fun.”

After seven weeks of radiation, Evans was sent home to recover.

Three months later he had a test, and was deemed cancer free.

That is until a few years later in 2012, when he was diagnosed with an aggressive stage of prostate cancer. Soon after, Evans had surgery to remove his prostate.

It was two months after his prostate cancer surgery that Evans decided to get actively involved in Movember.

“At that point I thought, well here I am; I’m the perfect spokesperson for Movember. I’ve gone through prostate cancer,” said Evans. “I thought it would be kind of funny since I only have half a moustache.”

That year, Evans raised over $7,000 by soliciting donations from everyone he knew.

This year marks Evans’ third Movember, and

he has come up with an alternative fundraising plan.

Being the owner of Character Building in Victoria, Evans decided to donate his time as a carpenter for the month of November.

In exchange for free labour, Evans is accepting donations for his Movember campaign.

“What I like about Movember is the levity of it in the face of great devastation. There’s an optimism that I tried to bring to all of this,” said Evans.

Final thoughts on the election A few more thoughts on last weekend’s civic election: ■ Seven new mayors are gracing the halls of power in Greater Victoria municipalities, including Victoria’s new mayor, Lisa Helps, after last Saturday’s election.

A political shift is definitely taking place, but what is that shift – and what is the catalyst?

Is it to younger, more dynamic politicians, the influence of the Green Party, or were Greater Victoria residents just in need of change for the sake of change? Only time will tell.

■ One thing for sure: people certainly weren’t happy with the status quo. This is always evident when you get a high voter turnout (which was recorded in almost every South Island municipality).

Each municipality has its issues. But the two overriding issues remain the sewage project boondoggle and, of course, amalgamation. And each of those will require a miracle worker to solve.

■ The province walked into the amalgamation debate two days after the election when it announced it will commit support and resources as required to the process.

As we noted in this space Wednesday, it is extremely important that Greater Victoria creates its own plans for amalgamation: a made in Victoria solution, not a provincially mandated solution that may serve the B.C. legislature rather than local residents.

To do that, mayors and councillors, new and old, will have to start by sitting down and seeing what first steps can be taken in terms of informal cooperation and sharing.

■ We would all be remiss not to thank all the candidates for offering their time to public office. It takes great courage to put your name before the electorate. Campaigning means a lot of work and money.

These candidates risk a lot when they decide to run for a seat on city council or the school board. It’s not as if they are going to be paid an exorbitant rate even if they win.

The Impreza had a similar one-dimensional attitude before this new model arrived. Yes, it is one of the most practical designs, with big doors that make getting in and out a breeze, the huge windows make outward visibility impressive but the car lacked sophisti-

cation. For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedying the situation. The radio head unit now looks like a polished, integrated feature, replacing what looked like an afterthought. There is a standard 6.2-inch unit or a larger 7-inch model for cars equipped with navigation. A backup camera is now standard equipment along with Bluetooth connectivity and heated seats are standard on all but the base model.

Honda has had a big year.

Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products.

But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014.

Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought.

CBR650F

Don’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist.

With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat.

What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but without the wrist and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride.

Honda mentions that the development team included many engineers in their 20s.

That’s a good thing, considering they want to attract a younger customer with the CBR650F. Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements.

Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine.

It comes in great colours like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eye-catching Candy Tahitian Blue The CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999.

VFR800F

The wait is over and 2014 saw the re-introduction of the VFR800F. The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork.

Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new self-cancelling turn signals.

In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque.

The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sport-touring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades.

The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4VTEC engine allows for some great low-end power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face.

Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve timing still operates one pair of inlet/ exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless.

The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.)

It’s not a svelte bike by any stretch, so urban riding wasn’t my favourite. But on the open road, it is just a treat.

Ah, the NC750XA. A bike I’ve been dying to get on since the NC700s came out two years ago.

It’s the more adventurous of two NC models (the S and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6-inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position.

This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise.

For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder engine.

With its engine mounted low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-move-around type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank.

Not bad.

And it get’s better.

With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compartment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest features of this bike.

One member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjustable windscreen, open riding accommodations and large-capacity fuel tank.

Colder weather and shorter days are a reminder that winter is on its way – and with it comes the holiday season, lights and Christmas parades.

In Victoria, the annual Island Farms Santa Light Parade happens Nov. 29 from 5:45 to 7 p.m. The parade, full of lit up floats and marching bands, goes down Government Street, starting at Belville Street and ending at Chatham Street.

On Dec. 6 is the annual Truck Light Parade and the Greater Victoria Harbour Lighted Ship Parade. The Truck Light Parade, organized by the Island Equipment Owners

Crooners sings blues and jazz for training centre for the blind

The Pacific Training Centre for the Blind is singing the blues.

The centre will host a concert at Hermann’s Jazz Club on Saturday (Nov. 22) featuring local jazz and blues artists, including Maureen Washington with Karel Roessingh, the Craig Henderson Trio with Bill Kent, pianist Skye Mundell, and several others.

The centre runs the Blind People in Charge program, a community-based service which provides twice-weekly classes led by blind facilitators to blind adults in Victoria and Nanaimo.

The curriculum for this program revolves around the basics of blindness/non-visual skills and independence training.

Participants enrolled in this program learn Braille, adaptive technology, travel with the long white cane, cooking, home management and job readiness skills.

This pilot program also serves as a foundation for our larger goal of building capacity for a more intensive, residential program scheduled to launch in the next three years.

Tickets will be sold at the door for $17 each.

The event, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, was held at the Empress Hotel.

The author must reside on southern Vancouver Island.

New provincial rules coming for municipal election spending Tom Fletcher Black Press

Municipal election campaigns are like mushrooms that pop up every few years, with voters still in the dark about who’s fertilizing them with how much money.

That’s why the B.C. government waited until the first elections for four-year municipal terms were held to examine how campaign spending should be regulated, said Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development.

Oakes promised there will be new rules on spending and donations from property developers, unions and other donors to municipal council and school

board candidates by the next province-wide municipal vote in 2018. A legislature committee started working on it in October, with recommendations due

by Nov. 27.

“What we found is that for a lot of the organizations, if you’re not in election mode, they are not formed,” Oakes said. “So we knew that if we were to do stakeholder engagement, we need to do it when the elections were happening.”

Some urban municipalities see substantial campaign donations from special interests, with only the requirement of disclosure long after votes are counted. In Vancouver, where developers and civic worker unions spend heavily, Mayor Gregor Robinson’s Vision Van-

couver party and challenger Kirk Lapointe’s Non-Partisan Association were pushed to voluntarily disclose their major donors before Saturday’s vote.

Imposing campaign reform on local governments is an awkward task for the ruling B.C. Liberals, who have refused to give up their multi-million-dollar advantage in corporate donations over the NDP and other challengers.

NDP leader John Horgan said Monday the opposition will soon table its annual private member’s bill calling for the elimination of corporate and union donations from provincial campaigns, as has been done in other provinces and at the federal level.

Researchers behind a new interactive online map that tracks cycling crash hotspots and near-misses are anticipating the project will soon spread to cities across the world.

Bike Maps (bikemaps.org) has already drawn 9,500 online visitors and reports of 466 cycling incidents in its first month of operation, said University of Victoria associate professor Trisalyn Nelson, who created the project with a small team in the spatial pattern analysis and research geography lab.

“We already have people entering data from nine different countries without any promotion,” Nelson said. “This is the launch site.”

The idea started with Nelson, who commutes by bike to UVic. Her kids, three and six years old, are following suit as little commuters of their own, which inspired Nelson to take cycling safety analysis to the next level.

“I originally thought about a site where you could rant about a near-miss and community

cycling hazards, but that wasn’t enough. The planning community wants to increase ridership and safety is a No. 1 concern,” she said.

Bike Map’s main feature is collecting reports of cyclinginvolved crashes fusing data from ICBC, the Victoria Police Department and the public, who are invited to submit their own experiences. Researchers are keeping the emphasis on Greater Victoria for now.

“What we’re seeing is there are hotspots of bike incidents around the city that wouldn’t have shown up using strictly ICBC data because they’re not vehiclerelated and therefore don’t result in claims,” Nelson said.

As of last week, Bike Maps’ four categories included 115 collisions, 175 near misses, 131 hazards and 45 bike thefts. Hazards refer to potholes, narrow intersections or other road dangers while near-misses and collisions include those with another bike or pedestrian.

Users can register their riding area and receive tailored monthly updates. A smart phone app is scheduled for the spring,

and cyclists will be able to use it in real time.

“You would get real time alerts with the phone, you could even change your route based on them,” Nelson said.

Building the site was tasked to fourth year undergraduate Taylor Denouden, who spent the summer putting in the work.

Now that Bike Maps is live, SPAR masters student Ben Jestico is continuing his graduate work to study predictors of cycling safety. A fourth member, Karen Laberee, is in charge of publicity.

Nelson said the eventual trove of cycling data collected through Bike Maps will be useful not only to cyclists, but to police and other academic researchers.

“Our message has mostly been around safety, but including the incidents of bike theft made sense. There is bike theft (in Greater Victoria) and with Bike Maps, we’ll see it in clusters of place and time.”

Highlanders FC men’s Prospects soccer squads split last weekend’s matches, Nov. 15-16, with the Division 2 squad capturing their first win of November, while the U-21’s fell to a Mid Isle Highlanders squad that featured several returning members fresh off a second-place CCAA Nationals finish.

The Highlanders Division 2 Prospect men took to the pitch, Sunday against PLSC Lakers Black 2, grinding out a 2-1 victory at Finlayson Turf off of goals from Bilal Mohomad and Brian Im. Andrew Dunn scored for Lakers Black in a losing cause as the Highlanders earned their first victory in November.

Victoria opened scoring in the match, with Earthy Find rounding his marker before sending a low cross across goal to a sliding Mohomad, who sent the ball to the back of the net to go up 1-0 in the match.

scored the eventual game-winner goal before halftime. The second half of play featured a missed pair of opportunities from the Highlanders, who focused their efforts in the latter half of the game on preserving their lead.

“We played well against a mature, good team,” explained head coach Steve Simonson.

The Highlanders U-21 squad conceded a 6-2 defeat to affiliate club Mid Isle Highlanders FC on Nov. 15, receiving goals from Mitch Lefebvre and Andre Earthy Find. Mid Isle found their scoring from a variety of sources that included Blaze Roberts, Darien Atkinson, Russell Lederer. Victor Blasco Llorens registered a hat-trick for the visiting squad.

“It was a good game to be honest,” said Simonson. “It was enjoyable for our young players, who got the opportunity to play against some very good college players.”

Victoria Royals’ Magee enjoys life on and off the ice It may be just a practice but veteran Victoria Royals forward Brandon Magee is in action all over the arena at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, taking part in drills, chatting with teammates, flipping the puck on his stick and even turning a loss of balance into a pratfall on ice for the amusement of teammates.

The 20 year old is enjoying his late return to the ice (from a 12-game suspension for an incident against Portland at the end of last season) and not just in practice.

Magee has had a hot hand since returning including tying a franchise record for most assists in a single game last weekend against the Vancouver Giants.

Magee was happy to tie the record, calling it a “fun tidbit for the stats.”

When asked if he gained any insights from his enforced observation of the game from the press box during the suspension, Magee said that he did gain a different perspective of the overall flow of a game and hoped he brought some of that understanding back to the ice with him.

This will be Magee’s final season in the Western Hockey League and as a veteran one of his roles is making sure the rookie players fit in.

He finds most rookies too shy to ask questions so he said it is up to the vets to make sure the newcomers understand

the speed of the game, the need to pay attention to detail, move the puck and to remember to have fun in the new environment.

Off the ice the Edmonton native is an avid golfer, enjoying the fact he can golf year round in the local climate, likes drives along the waterfront to the breakwater and sitting at the top

of Mount Doug with a coffee, all activities he couldn’t do in his hometown.

On whether he now considers himself a Westcoaster as opposed to an Alberta boy, Magee said he’ll always be an Alberta guy at heart. For instance, he still loves country music, but he says he’s “gotten soft” and can’t take the prai-

rie cold anymore.

SHELTER FOUNDATION Partnership between groups broadens help for transition houses Don Descoteau Black Press

Teamwork. It can be a powerful thing when the people and groups involved in a project or trying to achieve a common goal are all pulling in the same direction.

An initiative launched by Country Grocer, in partnership with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and Creekmore Coffee, sees these three groups working together to expand the reach of charity dollars provided to women’s shelters and transition houses on Vancouver Island.

The month-long fundraiser combines people’s love of coffee; a distribution method and an opportunity to help fund services for women on the Island. Now until Dec. 13, $3 from every bag of Creekmore’s Coffee Country Roaster blend will be directly shared between 10 facilities in Island communities from Courtenay to Ucluelet to Greater Victoria.

Bill Ethier, president and managing broker for Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, says providing financial assistance to transition houses is an extension of what agents do on a regular basis.

He describes that by way of offering the history of the Foundation. That organization emerged from a national survey the company undertook with its agents in 1998, when it asked what types of charity or fundraising ideas realtors would be interested in contributing to as a group.

“Homelessness rose to the top and the company began looking at it on a national level,” Ethier says.

What came through in his conversations with agents on Vancouver Island was that the most important aspect of their job is to provide people with a home. Ideally, they hope those homes are filled with love and companionship, but that isn’t always the case, he says.

“If a home isn’t happy, if there’s intimidation or abuse happening, the home isn’t happy anymore.”

The prevalence of family violence and abuse, not just in areas of the world where women are oppressed, but close to home, can be an eyeopener for people not exposed to such issues, Ethier says.

“There is still that lack of respect for women, and the children are the innocent victims in all of this. They’re victims of a power struggle in the home,” he says. “This happens in our own backyard, not just in other parts of the world.”

Greater Victoria Royal LePage agents and staff have worked with area transition houses for the past decade, via the Foundation. Looking at the scope of family violence and abuse, Ethier and other Royal LePage professionals pursued the idea of expanding the reach of their ongoing fundraising efforts.

“With the Royal LePage offices themselves being located on the South Island, we’ve focused on four shelters. With the ability of Country Grocer to come on board, and Creekmore Coffee … we’re going to be able to raise more money as a group,” he says.

“It’s an Island thing, it’s a national thing, it’s not just a Victoria thing.”

Tammy Averill, marketing manager for Country Grocer, says it’s very rare to have three Island organizations come together working for one cause.

“This is a new avenue for community involvement for Country Grocer,” she says. The chain had worked with Ethier on a previous unrelated campaign and didn’t hesitate when he asked them to get on board again, Averill says.

Dave Creekmore, whose company has supplied Country Grocer for many years and does a lot of work within its community of Coombs and Parksville, is pleased Royal LePage would want to partner up with them on a local initiative.

“This is a project that is good for everybody,” he says. “It’s nice to work Island-wide and do things on a grassroots level.”

LOCAL UPDATE

Services available for women in crisis Greater Victoria is serviced by a variety of transition houses and emergency shelters for women who may be escaping abusive or violent situations.

The Royal LePage Foundation works with four of those organizations: the Cridge Centre for the Family’s Cridge Transition House for Women, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Sooke Transition House Society, and Margaret Laurence House, which is operated by the Greater Victoria Women’s Shelter Society.

The Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, founded in 1974, temporarily housed 129 women and 59 children in 2013, and its volunteers answered 2,037 calls to its 24-hour crisis line. Hundreds more women were helped through programs operated or supported by the society. Among those are the Stopping the Violence counselling, Spousal Assault Victim Support program and specialized senior women’s programs.

The Cridge Transition House, formerly Hill House, offers a safe emergency shelter, supportive counselling, connections to community supports, support designed to meet the needs of children, and provides opportunities to support and be supported by other women experiencing similar situations.

The Sooke Transition House Society, at Annie’s Place, provides emergency shelter for women and children in crisis resulting from family violence. It also offers counselling programs including Stopping the Violence, and Children Who Witness Abuse, in Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Situated across from Saanich’s Rutledge Park at 935 Cloverdale Ave., the new Midtown Park development is aptly named.

The 42-unit condominium project is surprisingly close to two of Victoria’s biggest malls, one block south of Uptown and one block north of Mayfair, and is just one block from the border of Victoria, minutes from downtown.

“The location is very convenient, that’s why we liked the property,” said co-developer Gerry Koutougos.

Midtown opened in May and there are still l4 suites for sale, all two bedrooms.

The only penthouse, a much roomier two-bedroom, sold for $499,000. The rest range between $299,000 and $399,000, depending on floor space, which varies from 750 to 1194 square feet.

It’s the first multi-unit development by Koutougos and Chris Souliotis, who’ve built plenty of singlefamily houses in the region.

“The process of building Midtown Park was enjoyable, we are very happy we did it,” Koutougos said.

The developers had originally hoped for a greater number of units but relented, showing a great deal of patience to convert the previously abandoned, and controversial property, into a modernized condominium.

“I believe we did a good job on this one and we’re considering another multi-unit project in Saanich despite some of the red tape,” Koutougos said.

Only 14 of Midtown Park’s 42 units remain available, all two bedroom suites from $299,000 to $399,000. two decrepit houses. Koutougos and Souliotis purchased the land and houses but it still took time to get it approved.

Midtown’s structural design came from Misra Architect, with finishings led by Heather Kallos Interior Design, though there were some simple elements that just made sense, Koutougos said.

with the property. The view is beautiful there, looking across to (Rutledge Park) so we wanted nice big balconies, which are great.”

Sales are mostly consistent and Koutougos is not worried about the remaining suites.

“One week you don’t sell one but then the week before last week, all of a sudden we sold three.

“Whenever we sell it is fine, we’re

not worried about any deadlines, selling it.”

Charity event supports green projects The Land Trust Alliance of B.C. and Habitat Acquisition Trust will celebrate Christmas early – with a predictable green flair.

It’s all about gaining traction for Subaru, not just on the pavement but also in terms of sales.

For Subaru, traction and sales are related. When Subaru decided to switch its entire lineup of cars to all wheel drive (AWD) back in 1995, the company never looked back. (That was also the year Subaru introduced the Outback sport wagon.)

Back then, sales then were roughly 4000 per year and this year Subaru is on track to sell over 40,000 units, an impressive accomplishment.

In order to highlight Subaru’s latest Impreza compact sedan and hatchback, Subaru needed a location that could show off the vehicle on dry roads and in winter conditions. The Okanagan was chosen for the wonderful twisting roads through wine country but also snow-on-demand at Big White Ski Resort and the setting was perfect.

Looks

Earlier this year Subaru introduced the WRX, higher performance, Impreza-based sedan to accolades for that vehicle’s handling, power and design. It could be argued that Subaru has refreshed the outside of this new 2015 Impreza with WRX “light”. The new front grille, headlamps, air intakes and wheel options all make a much bolder statement.

Sold a sedan or hatchback, both cars now have a sharper, more defined look.

But Subaru also wanted to make a statement with what cannot be seen, the way the car is put together.

One of the main areas of focus was sound insulation and reduced cabin noise.

Thicker front and side glass is now used, along with

wheel-well sound insulation, thicker door seals and under carpet baffling. Not the kind of advancements that get noticed initially but they are welcome.

Drive

The Okanagan is one of those spots that is defined by summer; it’s all about the hot, dry lakeside vacation. But after three days, in and around Kelowna, experiencing the first blast of arctic air, the place is just as magical at this time of year. Stories of the wine pickers getting ready for the ice-wine harvest makes it

For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedying the situation. The radio head unit now looks like a polished, integrated feature, replacing what looked like an afterthought. There is a standard 6.2-inch unit or a larger 7-inch model for cars equipped with navigation. A backup camera is now standard equipment along with Bluetooth connectivity and heated seats are standard on all but the base model.

Other changes include a re-worked suspension and steering. The springs and dampening have been adjusted to reduce bouncing over big bumps and the steering ratio is quicker.

This along with the much quieter interior makes this a good cruising car but the steering lacks feedback and under hard cornering, the car tends to under steer. The engine too is best suited for cruising; climbing mountain roads strained it at times.

The good news is that enthusiast drivers have the excellent WRX as an option.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) now has a thicker casing for quieter operation and it now features pre-set steps to help mimic a conventional automatic. Honda has had a big year.

Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products.

But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014.

Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought.

CBR650F

Don’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist.

With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat.

What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but without the wrist and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride.

Honda mentions that the development team included many engineers in their 20s.

That’s a good thing, considering they want to attract a younger customer with the CBR650F. Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements.

Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine.

It comes in great colours like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eye-catching Candy Tahitian Blue The CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999.

VFR800F

The wait is over and 2014 saw the re-introduction of the VFR800F. The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork.

Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new self-cancelling turn signals.

In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque.

The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sport-touring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades.

The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4VTEC engine allows for some great low-end power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face.

Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve timing still operates one pair of inlet/ exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless.

The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.)

It’s not a svelte bike by any stretch, so urban riding wasn’t my favourite. But on the open road, it is just a treat.

It has an MSRP of $13,499.

NC750XA

Ah, the NC750XA. A bike I’ve been dying to get on since the NC700s came out two years ago.

It’s the more adventurous of two NC models (the S and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6-inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position.

This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise.

For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder engine.

With its engine mounted low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-move-around type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank.

Not bad.

And it get’s better.

With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compartment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest features of this bike.

It has an MSRP of $8,199.

CB500XA

One member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjustable windscreen, open riding accommodations and large-capacity fuel tank.

A fishing tale to top them all With the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show wrapping up last week in Las Vegas, I thought I would share with you an interesting vehicle that was on display and caught my eye – the 2014 Toyota Tundra Ultimate fishing vehicle.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro angler, Britt Myers wanted a Toyota Tundra equipped with everything you would want to go fishing and I think he got his wish. It is painted in a matte gray finish from front to back with yellow and black tribal graphics. Front bumper is made by Fab Fours and comes with PIAA fog and driving lights. There is a Warn 15000lb winch tucked inside this massive bumper.

Rolling big power provided the custom grille.

Bushwacker fender flares help cover the 37” tall Nitto mud grappler tires mounted on 22” Moto metal black rims. The folks at Pro Comp suspension provided the 6” suspension lift. It features a MX 2.75c series coil over front shocks and MX6 adjustable rear shocks.

In case you are wondering, how you would get in this thing, Bestop has built a running board step that

raises and lowers automatically when you open and close the doors. A smaller step folds down manually just in front of the rear tires. This helps you reach the custom-made roof rack cargo basket.

The cargo basket has Rigid 50” LED lights recessed in the front, back and sides, giving plenty of light to see all around. The canopy is built by Leer and has painted fiberglass panels replacing the windows. The rear is truly unique. The canopy gate and vehicle tailgate are connected and attached to a rolling platform that slides out to carry a beverage fridge, tool compartment, fishing tackle, and more! It looks like a showroom out of a fishing store.

The cabin features all black factory leather seats with a custom made center console. Instead of cup holders, a panel of switches takes its place where the driver can easily access the various powered equipment. The dash features a graphic montage of fish skeletons to get you in the mood. The door panels are equipped with twin speakers and a fish finder monitor. I guess you would have to dip the front tire in the river to make it work.

Five (more) movie clunkers

Sequels are rarely as good as the first, but give this second round of clunkers from film and television a chance.

Each of the following cars was selected based on reader comments.

“Uncle Buck,” 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham: We all have that oddball relative — if you can't think of one, well, it’s probably you. In 1989’s hit comedy, “Uncle Buck,” John Candy portrays Uncle Buck, an unemployed gambler charged with caring for his wealthy suburbanite brother’s children. While the children might find Uncle Buck a bit odd, they find his ’75 Marquis downright revolting — and terrifying if standing anywhere near it when it backfires.

“Columbo,” 1959 Peugeot 403 Cabriolet: This popular television series starred Peter Falk as disheveled detective Lieutenant Columbo. While most cops would opt to drive a service car, Columbo chooses to drive his personal car, a faded Peugeot 403 Cabriolet that often suffers from mechanical problems at inopportune moments. And just one more thing: The car was personally selected for the show by Falk, after he spotted it in a parking lot at Universal Studios.

“Wayne’s World,” 1976 AMC Pacer: Ah, the “Mirth Mobile”! This 1976 Pacer was the ride of choice for public-access cable stars Wayne and Garth in 1992’s cult classic “Wayne’s World.” While the Mirth Mobile, with its mismatched wheels and flame decals, is sure to make any car lover go “schwing,” the Pacer is often noted for its unique styling, courtesy of the famous designer Richard Teague.

“Harper,” 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster: Who would have ever thought of Paul Newman driving a Porsche on the big screen? Sarcasm aside, Paul Newman’s eponymous character, Harper, is a wisecracking private investigator tasked with tracking down a kidnapped millionaire in the 1966 film of the same name. Harper’s decrepit Porsche 356 Speedster makes several appearances in the film, including a horrific tumble down a hill (at least for a Porsche-phile like myself). Fortunately it was not a true 356A Speedster, but a shell with exhaust tips attached.

“Dude Where’s My Car,” 1979 Renault Le Car: In 2000’s so-bad-it’s-funny comedy “Dude, Where’s My Car,” Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott wake up from an eventful night only to find they’ve forgotten where they parked their beat-up Renault Le Car.
