Registered nurse Joanne Laforce, who works in the Victoria General Hospital neonatal intensive care unit, is reunited with Langford baby Juliette Dudley at a luncheon hosted by six mothers who had babies cared for in the unit earlier this year.

Juliette was born at 33 weeks, seven weeks premature, in March. The event, held at Jeneece Place, coincided with World Prematurity Day. The luncheon was the mothers’ way to say thank you to staff who cared for their babies, and to offer support and encouragement to parents who have babies in the unit now.

The upcoming Sooke School District year will be all about transition.

More than 4,500 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 will navigate their way to new schools for the 2015-2016 academic year and the newly elected School District 62 trustees are already preparing for this and other challenges in one of the fastest growing districts in B.C. “We had a survey done and by 2024, our growth prediction is 50 per cent (from current enrolment),” current Sooke School Board chair Wendy Hobbs said.

“There will be lots of communities with transition times (next Sept.) and we are focusing on getting two new high schools open … so we have enough schools to handle the growth that is predicted.”

No rogue waste burners in Langford so far, says fire chief Newest stage of city burning bylaw being met with respect, Szpak says Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

Langford’s new burning regulations, implemented last month, have proven to be a breath of fresh air, quite literally.

Since burning season opened Nov. 1, the fire department has not received a single air quality complaint, a drastic improvement from previous years.

“Every season for the last 12 years on council, I would get dozens of air quality complaints,” said Langford councillor and protective services committee chair Lillian Szpak.

To be specific, there were 208 official complaints to the fire department in the burning seasons from late 2012 to early 2014, and that doesn’t include all the emails and phone calls Szpak and other city councillors received personally.

“And not just the people with health problems. I was hearing from people who had just relocated to Langford, and when they realized we allowed burning here, they were horrified,” she said.

“They would be coming back from

downtown and see this haze of smoke over Langford.”

Mayor and council listened to what the majority of residents were asking for, Szpak added, and started taking steps to reform burning. “Langford’s not the rural, outlying community anymore.

We’re much more urbanized, and we’ve made our focus family and community.”

The process to move from open burning to a more city-friendly process for dealing with yard waste began several years ago, with gradual steps to shorten the burning season, reduce the number of days to burn within the season and the imposition of more stringent restrictions.

“You want to be respectful when you’re bringing about a change,” Szpak said.

“It was about a year ago that council decided it was time to take the next step,” said Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett of the most recent regulation changes. “And the level of co-operation has been great. We just have not had folks trying to skirt the new regulations.

I think the community recognizes what we’re trying to achieve: clean air.”

As an alternative to burning, the City of Langford and the fire department are encouraging residents to take advantage of the Three Cs: chipping, composting and commercial disposal. The city did look into a municipal drop-off centre several years ago, but the

Students at Belmont secondary were held in their classrooms, their school surrounded by police cars, as the threat of a fight involving a knife and a gun was dealt with Tuesday morning.

Principal Ray Miller confirmed

that the school was placed in a lockout situation – not a lockdown – after comments made on social media indicated that a fight was brewing involving current students and individuals not attending the school.

“We were worried about releasing the kids into the community (for lunch) knowing that this threat may be out there,” Miller said.

The information about a potential fight brewing was relayed to school administrators around 11 a.m. by a Belmont student and a parent who saw postings about it on social media, he said. The decision to implement a lockout came

after 10 minutes of making phone calls and checking information as a way to determine the potential risk to students.

West Shore RCMP received a tip about the possible scenario around the same time and worked with the Sooke School District on implementing a lockout of both Belmont and Pacific secondary in Colwood.

The RCMP determined the fight was to have involved three males, two of whom are students in the district. No weapons were found and no fight occurred, but police are continuing their investigation.

As of late Tuesday, no charges had been laid.

World Prematurity Day inspires local luncheon Nurses thanked for kindness and care Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

As landmarks all around the world were lighting up in purple on Monday to help raise awareness for the fourth annual World Prematurity Day, six local mothers did their part to mark the day.

The moms, who all gave birth to premature babies within the last year at Victoria General Hospital, hosted and paid for a luncheon to thank staff in the neonatal intensive care unit, and

to show support for the families with infants currently in hospital.

“It was wonderful for them to acknowledge us the way that they did,” said Joanne Laforce, a registered nurse in the unit for 27 years. “We look at them as family as well. We bond with the parents and we bond with the babies. We never go into nursing expecting recognition, and to know that they feel about us the same way we feel about them is just wonderful.”

Nearly 500 babies were admitted to VGH’s neonatal intensive care unit last year, and of those, about 90 were born very premature at less than 32 weeks, requiring round-the-clock spe-

cialized care. There are 19 premature babies at VGH right now, and though the job is challenging, it also has its great rewards, Laforce said.

“We see them when they’re vulnerable and fragile. When they defy the odds and get to go home, it’s really rewarding.”

World Prematurity Day aims to raise awareness of premature births, which happen in one of 10 pregnancies worldwide. Premature babies may face learning disabilities, or suffer from vision or hearing problems later on.

Three new trustees could bring a major shift to the Greater Victoria board of education, which incorporates View Royal on the West Shore.

“I think the (election result) is going to change the direction of the board,” said current board chair Peg Orcherton.

Ann Whiteaker topped the polls with 20,252 votes. She will be joined by fellow newcomers Rob Paynter (18,926 votes) and Jordan Watters (16,658).

Orcherton (20,083 votes), will be joined by five other incumbents when the new board is sworn in Dec. 1: Deborah Nohr (20,177), Diane McNally (20,057), Elaine Leonard (17,855), Edith Loring-Kuhanga (17,389) and Tom Ferris (16,940).

“What I’d like to see is the board moving in the same direction, focusing on what benefits students, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen,” Orcherton said.

She expects the three new trust-

ees will side with three incumbents, something she fears will put “the benefit of the teachers’ union before the benefit of the students.”

Orcherton also expects the new balance of power will bring an end to her term as board chair. “I don’t think that’s going to be in the cards. I think with a new majority that will likely shift. We’ll have to see on (Dec. 1).”

Orcherton plans to call on the other trustees to present a united voice to advocate for the proper funding models so students receive the education they deserve.

“With the chronic underfunding of education, we need to work together with one voice, not fighting amongst ourselves and with the stakeholders group, which allows the government to continue to abrogate their responsibilities,” she said.

Board vice-chair Bev Horsman lost her re-election bid, receiving 16,351 votes. Nicole Duncan (14,247), John Rizzuti (12,458) and Ruth MacIntosh (12,222) also fell short of gaining a spot on the nine-member board. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Don’t undervalue role of trustees In the hierarchy of public elections, candidates for school trustee generally fall near the bottom of the recognition scale for most voters.

Around here at least, the people who run for school board are not usually attention-grabbing individuals vowing to make changes to the system or other Your school board such promises. They looks after tens of often have kids in the school system, millions of dollars or aren’t far removed from being parents of school-aged children, and so have a good idea of how education funding is filtering into classrooms.

Today school trustees don’t have nearly so much power to change the system, which is pretty much entirely the domain of the provincial government. But local trustees do play a critical role in our communities, which is to ensure the money the district does receive from the province is spent wisely.

The Sooke School District’s operational budget is pushing $100 million. That’s even more reason for us as voters to install people on the board who have a pretty good handle on reading balance sheets, or at least understand the value of cash.

Not only do trustees have to go over their budget with a fine-tooth comb – and figure out where shortfalls will be taken up – they’re in charge of administering it once the province gives the document the green light.

The workload and expectation level would be enough to drive some people to throw in the towel, but this election saw every sitting trustee run again, despite the additional year of service.

The next step for regional amalgamation is in the hands of the province now that Greater Victoria voters have shown their support, says Amalgamation Yes’ John Vickers.

“The issue took a big step forward with 75 per cent of voters in the region supporting the nonbinding question (if it was on) Saturday’s municipal election ballot,” Vickers said. “Now it’s up to the province, the only way it’s going to fly is if we really do see leadership from them. We want to see an end run here.”

Seven of eight Capital District municipalities voted yes to the non-binding question of amalgamation on Saturday, including Langford, whose question directly asked residents if they favoured amalgamation.

Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes of released a statement on Monday in response to the positive result saying it’s now in the process of reviewing the referendum results in greater detail.

“I remain committed to provide the support and resources required by the newly-elected local governments, once they have had an opportunity to discuss and review the results in greater detail.”

Vickers said he’s had communications with the ministry but it’s imperative now to keep moving that forward.

“What we’d like to see is a commission with experts and insight into the various issues, to study and come up with two or three different models, which will hopefully lead to a provincially run referendum in 2018

It was outgoing Mayor Frank Leonard who framed Saanich’s “governance review” question but it will be mayor-elect Richard Atwell and council overseeing its implement.

Atwell, who came to municipal politics through his work with the Sewage Treatment Action Group, is hesitant to pledge a direct allegiance to amalgamation but said his early focus on the matter would include a review on the Capital Regional District.

“If it reaches a review then one area I’d think would be considered is the election format for the CRD directors. Should they be elected directly?” he asked.

“There is additional cost-savings to be had at the CRD level but I’ve heard (amalgamation) won’t necessarily save money … the challenge is to retain the personal connection with residents, you don’t want to lose that balance.”

Directions Place tart shells on a non-stick or parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Preheat oven to 350F. Combine butter, oats, pecans and brown sugar in a medium bowl. Place lemon juice in a second medium bowl. Add the apples and toss to coat. Add granulated sugar, apple juice, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg, mix to combine. Spoon and mound apple mixture into the tart shells, ensuring all the liquid in the bowl makes its way into the shells. Divide and top the apples with the oat mixture, lightly packing it on. Tarts will look quite mounded, but will settle down as apples cook and soften. Bake tarts 30 to 35 min or until golden brown. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled, removing the foil liners first.

Brand new on the Christmas craft and art show circuit this year is Glow Art Studio and Gallery’s two-weekend event, showcasing dozens of Metchosin’s artists and their talents.

In addition to the regular roster of creatives, Glow Studio founder Linda Simrose is bringing in at least 10 more local artists into the already full space to meet the community’s demand for more and more art.

“I’ve brought in jewelry makers, a weaver, painters. Everyone has their own table, and we’re using up the entire hallway (outside the studio),” she says.

“There will be Christmas decorations and Christmas baking. I’ve got people to do everything.”

The rapidly growing gallery is located in the old library of the former Metchosin elementary, and only opened May 1.

Simrose is already looking at moving the operation upstairs to accommodate the need for more space, especially since her Sunday open-house workshops have become more well known.

“Artists work on their own so much of the time,” she says.

Subaru Imprezas on Okanagan ice and snow

It’s all about gaining traction for Subaru, not just on the pavement but also in terms of sales.

For Subaru, traction and sales are related. The Okanagan was chosen for the wonderful twisting roads through wine country but also snow-on-demand at Big White Ski Resort and the setting was perfect.

The Okanagan is one of those spots that is defined by summer; it’s all about the hot, dry lakeside vacation. But after three days, in and around Kelowna, experiencing the first blast of arctic air, the place is just as magical at this time of year. Stories of the wine pickers getting ready for the ice-wine harvest makes it as appealing and delicious as ever.

The Impreza had a similar one-dimensional attitude before this new model arrived. Yes, it is one of the most practical designs, with big doors that make getting in and out a breeze, the huge windows make outward visibility impressive but the car lacked sophisti-

cation. For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedying the situation. The radio head unit now looks like a polished, integrated feature, replacing what looked like an afterthought. There is a standard 6.2-inch unit or a larger 7-inch model for cars equipped with navigation. A backup camera is now standard equipment along with Bluetooth connectivity and heated seats are standard on all but the base model.

Drive

Driving over ice covered roads on the way to Big White Ski Resort and then getting to push the Impreza as hard as it would allow on a snow covered handling course, gives a great sense of confidence in the cars AWD system.

For ultimate bite, a good set of winter tires along with the AWD system is impressive. The 148hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is carried over from the last car but now it is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV), and the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States claims it is the “cleanest gas car on the market”, helping to reduce smog-forming pollutants.

Other changes include a re-worked suspension and steering. The springs and dampening have been adjusted to reduce bouncing over big bumps and the steering ratio is quicker.

This along with the much quieter interior makes this a good cruising car but the steering lacks feedback and under hard cornering, the car tends to under steer.

Verdict

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) now has a thicker casing for quieter operation and it now features pre-set steps to help mimic a conventional automatic. And manual transmission owners will be pleased to know that all trim levels can be equipped with a stick, but it is only a 5-speed. On the top two trim levels the Impreza can

be equipped with EyeSight, Subaru’s collision mitigation system that can detect objects and pedestrians and will brake the car to a stop if the drive takes no action. This has proven to be popular with drivers and is something typically found in more expensive cars. What Subaru has not changed is the price. Starting at $19,995 and topping out at $30,295, there is a trim and price for many Canadian buyers. The added backup camera, improved interior and the bonus of a PZEV engine is all just an added benefit that should help

Honda has had a big year.

Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products.

But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014.

Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought.

CBR650F

Don’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist.

With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat.

What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but without the wrist and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride.

Honda mentions that the development team included many engineers in their 20s.

That’s a good thing, considering they want to attract a younger customer with the CBR650F. Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements.

Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine.

It comes in great colours like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eye-catching Candy Tahitian Blue The CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999.

VFR800F

The wait is over and 2014 saw the re-introduction of the VFR800F. The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork.

Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new self-cancelling turn signals.

In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque.

The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sport-touring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades.

The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4VTEC engine allows for some great low-end power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face.

Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve timing still operates one pair of inlet/ exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless.

The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.)

It’s not a svelte bike by any stretch, so urban riding wasn’t my favourite. But on the open road, it is just a treat.

It has an MSRP of $13,499.

NC750XA

Ah, the NC750XA. A bike I’ve been dying to get on since the NC700s came out two years ago.

It’s the more adventurous of two NC models (the S and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6-inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position.

This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise.

For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder engine.

With its engine mounted low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-move-around type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank.

Not bad.

And it get’s better.

With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compartment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest features of this bike.

It has an MSRP of $8,199.

CB500XA

One member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjustable windscreen, open riding accommodations and large-capacity fuel tank.

Education fund donations encouraged at fundraiser today

Co-workers are banding together this week for T.J. Kelly, a West Shore man diagnosed with terminal cancer, and his young family.

Employees at PSC Natural Foods in Langford are hosting a fundraiser today (Nov. 21) to help start up an education fund for Kelly’s one-yearold son, Chase.

The special event, on from 3 to 7 p.m. at the store, includes a silent auction, a donation area and live music provided by the Clover Point Drifters.

New bus routes, new catchment areas, labour relations, new courses and transitioning students into those schools are on the docket, all of which is exacerbated by the building of the brand new Royal Bay and Belmont high schools.

“I think the challenges of moving that many children into a new school are going to be (difficult), but I think it’s going to be wonderful,” she said.

“Once we get (them) dealt with, it’s going to be an exciting time.”

That isn’t the only work to be done, Hobbs said.

On top of the need for more high school spaces that is already being addressed, growth in elementary age students is another area of focus for the district.

“We definitely know that Happy Valley is a concern, but you can only put so many portables on schools. You are taking fields away from kids and that is difficult,” she said.

“As you drive (past) Happy Valley (elementary) you see there will be another 25 (homes going in there) so it is crazy.”

That school is currently so full, families living right in the area aren’t able to send children to their neighbourhood school. Development along the corridor is happening faster than the rate of growth in the number of schools, which causes the capacity issues – Hobbs said there are no quick-fix solutions.

Two classrooms formerly earmarked for Langford Emergency Preparedness are currently undergoing changes to be turned into classrooms.

The process, meant to happen over the summer, was delayed when support staff avoided crossing the teachers’ picket lines and is now scheduled for completion around Christmas.

A further configuration change in the school grades adds another layer of respite for the undersized school.

“Next year our Grade 6 (students) are going to be in middle school so we’ll have a couple more classrooms (available), but I do see it will come to a point where we’ll be at capacity and need another elementary school in the Westhills or Latoria area,” she said.

“We just can’t keep up with development. It took 15 years to get John Stubbs replaced – it’s a long process to get schools.”

Riders prep for nationals at Colwood velodrome Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

It’s near freezing at the Colwood velodrome and four teenaged track cyclists dressed in riding spandex are doing their best to keep warm inside a heated training tent.

The group, including 15-year-old Saanich residents Erik Diertens and Erin Attwell, who compete this weekend at the 2014 Junior National Track Cycling Championships in Burnaby, are on bikes attached to wind trainers that allow them to ride in place.

At one point, the frigid wind gusting outside threatens to carry the tents away, leaving Diertens and fellow junior rider Riley Pickrell, 13, to reach up and hang on while continuing to ride. Ah, the joys of winter

training in Victoria.

Triple Shot Racing club coach Lister Farrar says the Victoria Velodrome Association’s member clubs have upwards of 60 young riders in various stages of development.

“The next stage for us is to get local competition for them,” he says.

Farrar, named Cycling B.C.’s 2014 Youth Coach of the Year for his work promoting the sport and helping train area youth, says some riders make their way up the competitive ladder rather quickly, while others are content to ride for exercise and the social aspects of club riding.

Diertens, a member of the ProCity Racing club, and Attwell, who rides for Tripleshot, are among 11 riders from Vancouver Island who are part of Team B.C. competing in Burnaby.

Illustrating the youth movement

in Greater Victoria, the pair will be among the youngest riders in the under-17 categories.

Others area riders competing this weekend (club listed) include Saanich residents Clara Mackenzie (Local Ride) and Eloi Battista (Pacific Cycling Centre), Victoria’s Trevor Stothart (Red Truck), Esquimalt’s John Wilcox (ProCity) and Oak Bay’s Rachel Carey (Van. Island Youth Performance Racing Squad).

The competition on the steeply banked Burnaby Velodrome track includes an omnium event. Track cycling’s version of the heptathlon, the omnium is designed to create generalists among developing racers, Farrar says. Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres said a brisk November has helped push sales past last years home sales to this point, leading to what he said could be the busiest fall and winter season since 2009.

“Overall 2014 has been a surprising year. We expected the momentum carrying into the year would carry over, but it has exceeded expectations,” he said. “We are seeing low, stable interest rates with no reason rates will rise any dramatic amount, and that contributes to increased sales.”

Approximately 575 single family West Shore homes from Sooke, Langford, Metchosin, Colwood and the Highlands are up for grabs, ranging from a $220,000 “fixer upper” to a $5.9-million waterfront property.

Regardless of a wide-ranging inventory, Ayres said proper pricing can make the difference between selling and not.

“My experience on the West Shore has been mixed, a few sell quickly and some take a little time, but the good news is the right-priced properties sell as they do in any market,” he said.

“Prices have moderated, so we haven’t really seen appreciation. So for a seller, you might not get as much as you hope for, but there is enough activity that if you price well you will sell.”

“There (are) less buyers and less sellers looking in the market in the Christmas season. But it is a time when some have time off and are not busy with family stuff, (in which case) it might be a good time to buy or sell,” he said.

“Not everyone wants to sell, but the ones that do are determined to, so they do. The intrepid buyers and sellers are certainly getting deals done.”

Bill Ethier, president of Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, said sales are strong, but that has not necessarily increased prices. So, the currently balanced market has seen most prices remaining relatively stable compared to past years. He expects the same for at least the short term, with only marginal price increases on the horizon if at all; perhaps just enough to rise with the inflation rate, currently running at one to two per cent per year.

“For a seller it’s the old adage,” he said. “It’s a competitive market, but if the house is priced according to market conditions (and) also priced to (the home’s) condition, (it will move). From a seller’s perspective, if

their house is priced accordingly, it won’t languish on the market.”

Ethier pointed to a reasonable time on the market being 60 to 80 days which is the average right now.

His tip for buyers who find a home that fits most of their checklists is to not wait on the sidelines, because lower inventory means houses are on the move and there is a good chance it could disappear.

“We are down 10 per cent in inventory and up 10 per cent in sales,” he said.

SHELTER FOUNDATION Partnership between groups broadens help for transition houses Don Descoteau Black Press

Teamwork. It can be a powerful thing when the people and groups involved in a project or trying to achieve a common goal are all pulling in the same direction.

An initiative launched by Country Grocer, in partnership with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and Creekmore Coffee, sees these three groups working together to expand the reach of charity dollars provided to women’s shelters and transition houses on Vancouver Island.

The month-long fundraiser combines people’s love of coffee; a distribution method and an opportunity to help fund services for women on the Island. Now until Dec. 13, $3 from every bag of Creekmore’s Coffee Country Roaster blend will be directly shared between 10 facilities in Island communities from Courtenay to Ucluelet to Greater Victoria.

Bill Ethier, president and managing broker for Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, says providing financial assistance to transition houses is an extension of what agents do on a regular basis.

He describes that by way of offering the history of the Foundation. That organization emerged from a national survey the company undertook with its agents in 1998, when it asked what types of charity or fundraising ideas realtors would be interested in contributing to as a group.

“Homelessness rose to the top and the company began looking at it on a national level,” Ethier says.

What came through in his conversations with agents on Vancouver Island was that the most important aspect of their job is to provide people with a home. Ideally, they hope those homes are filled with love and companionship, but that isn’t always the case, he says.

“If a home isn’t happy, if there’s intimidation or abuse happening, the home isn’t happy anymore.”

The prevalence of family violence and abuse, not just in areas of the world where women are oppressed, but close to home, can be an eyeopener for people not exposed to such issues, Ethier says.

“There is still that lack of respect for women, and the children are the innocent victims in all of this. They’re victims of a power struggle in the home,” he says. “This happens in our own backyard, not just in other parts of the world.”

Greater Victoria Royal LePage agents and staff have worked with area transition houses for the past decade, via the Foundation. Looking at the scope of family violence and abuse, Ethier and other Royal LePage professionals pursued the idea of expanding the reach of their ongoing fundraising efforts.

“With the Royal LePage offices themselves being located on the South Island, we’ve focused on four shelters. With the ability of Country Grocer to come on board, and Creekmore Coffee … we’re going to be able to raise more money as a group,” he says.

“It’s an Island thing, it’s a national thing, it’s not just a Victoria thing.”

Tammy Averill, marketing manager for Country Grocer, says it’s very rare to have three Island organizations come together working for one cause.

“This is a new avenue for community involvement for Country Grocer,” she says. The chain had worked with Ethier on a previous unrelated campaign and didn’t hesitate when he asked them to get on board again, Averill says.

Dave Creekmore, whose company has supplied Country Grocer for many years and does a lot of work within its community of Coombs and Parksville, is pleased Royal LePage would want to partner up with them on a local initiative.

“This is a project that is good for everybody,” he says. “It’s nice to work Island-wide and do things on a grassroots level.”

LOCAL UPDATE

Services available for women in crisis Greater Victoria is serviced by a variety of transition houses and emergency shelters for women who may be escaping abusive or violent situations.

The Royal LePage Foundation works with four of those organizations: the Cridge Centre for the Family’s Cridge Transition House for Women, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Sooke Transition House Society, and Margaret Laurence House, which is operated by the Greater Victoria Women’s Shelter Society.

The Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, founded in 1974, temporarily housed 129 women and 59 children in 2013, and its volunteers answered 2,037 calls to its 24-hour crisis line. Hundreds more women were helped through programs operated or supported by the society. Among those are the Stopping the Violence counselling, Spousal Assault Victim Support program and specialized senior women’s programs.

The Cridge Transition House, formerly Hill House, offers a safe emergency shelter, supportive counselling, connections to community supports, support designed to meet the needs of children, and provides opportunities to support and be supported by other women experiencing similar situations.

The Sooke Transition House Society, at Annie’s Place, provides emergency shelter for women and children in crisis resulting from family violence. It also offers counselling programs including Stopping the Violence, and Children Who Witness Abuse, in Sooke and Port Renfrew.
