Virginia Smith takes mayoral seat by 316 votes over incumbent Bill Humphreys

North Thompson Star/Journal Virginia Smith has taken the District of Barriere mayoral seat away from incumbent Bill Humphreys by 316 votes in the Nov. 15, municipal election (Smith with 507 votes, Humphreys 191). Smith gained one vote from the initial number announced of 506 said the electoral officer last Tuesday due to a ballot that had been spoiled in the councillor vote area, but was acceptable in the vote for mayor, and was therefore counted. Smith has served the previous three terms on council, and in an interview with this newspaper prior to the election stated that she was ...”ready to become mayor.” After the election Smith said, “I think it was a good campaign by both of us, and I congratulate him on the work he has done over the last three years. I am now looking forward to serving this community to the best of my ability.” District of Barriere council members elected include two who will now be serving their fourth consecutive term for the municipality, Ward Stamer (561 votes), and Pat Paula (361), while moving into her second term for Barriere is Amanda Sabyan (424 votes). Barriere’s inaugural mayor, Mike Fennell, is back on council with 406 votes, and newcomers Al Fortin (450 votes) and Donna Kibble (458 votes) are joining the team. Mayor elect Virginia Smith votes, Harry Eberts with 271 votes, Christine Janis with 182 votes, and Shane Quiding with 161 votes. The total number of votes cast in the District of Barriere was 704 from 1490 estimated eligible voters. Voter turnout was just over 47 per cent.

Barriere’s Bill Kershaw will continue on as Thompson Nicola Regional District Area ‘O’ Director after receiving 156 votes over challenger Mike Fennell with 88 votes. School District #73 Board of Education Trustee Rhonda Kershaw is also continuing in her position, being elected by acclamation to represent TNRD Area ‘O’ and Barriere for the upcoming term.
