Virginia Smith takes mayoral seat by 316 votes over incumbent Bill Humphreys

North Thompson Star/Journal Virginia Smith has taken the District of Barriere mayoral seat away from incumbent Bill Humphreys by 316 votes in the Nov. 15, municipal election (Smith with 507 votes, Humphreys 191).

Smith gained one vote from the initial number announced of 506 said the electoral officer last Tuesday due to a ballot that had been spoiled in the councillor vote area, but was acceptable in the vote for mayor, and was therefore counted.

Smith has served the previous three terms on council, and in an interview with this newspaper prior to the election stated that she was ...”ready to become mayor.”

After the election Smith said, “I think it was a good campaign by both of us, and I congratulate him on the work he has done over the last three years. I am now looking forward to serving this community to the best of my ability.”

District of Barriere council members elected include two who will now be serving their fourth consecutive term for the municipality, Ward Stamer (561 votes), and Pat Paula (361), while moving into her second term for Barriere is Amanda Sabyan (424 votes). Barriere’s inaugural mayor, Mike Fennell, is back on council with 406 votes, and newcomers Al Fortin (450 votes) and Donna Kibble (458 votes) are joining the team.

Harwood re-elected as mayor of Clearwater

By Keith McNeill The Times The initial results are in and John Harwood has been re-elected as mayor of Clearwater for another four years.

He defeated challenger Jon Kreke by 481 votes to 294.

Harwood has been District of Clearwater’s mayor since incorporation seven years ago.

Also elected to Clearwater town council were Ken Kjenstad with 679 votes, Shelley Sim with 667, Merlin Blackwell with 598, Gord Heisterman with 545, Dennis Greffard with 533 and Barry Banford with 505.

All except Greffard were incumbent council members.

VICTORIA – Municipal election campaigns are like mushrooms that pop up every few years, with voters still in the dark about who’s fertilizing them with how much money.

That’s why the B.C. government waited until the first elections for four-year municipal terms were held to examine how campaign spending should be regulated, says Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development.

Oakes promised there will be new rules on spending and donations from property developers, unions and other donors to municipal council and school board candidates by the next province-wide municipal vote in 2018. A legislature committee started working on it in October, with recommendations due by Nov. 27.

“What we found is that for a lot of the organizations, if you’re not in election mode, they are not formed,” Oakes said. “So we knew that if we were to do stakeholder engagement, we need to do it when the elections were happening.”

Some urban municipalities see substantial campaign donations from special interests, with only the requirement of disclosure long after votes are counted. In Vancouver, where developers and civic worker unions spend heavily, Mayor Gregor Robinson’s Vision Vancouver party and challenger Kirk Lapointe’s Non-Partisan Association were pushed to voluntarily disclose their

Imposing campaign reform on local governments is an awkward task for the ruling B.C. Liberals, who have refused to give up their multimillion-dollar advantage in corporate donations over the NDP and other challengers.

NDP leader John Horgan said Monday the opposition will soon table its annual private member’s bill calling for the elimination of corporate and union donations from provincial campaigns, as has been done in other provinces and at the federal level.

Yellowhead submits environmental application for Harper Creek project The Times VANCOUVER/CNW/ - Yellowhead Mining Inc. announced on Nov. 11 that it has submitted its application for an environmental assessment certificate for its Harper Creek project to the BC Environmental Assessment Office in accordance with the provisions of the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Act. The EA application was also submitted to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, as the EA application constitutes an environmental impact assessment (“EIS”) under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. “The submission by Yellowhead of the EA application/EIS for the Harper Creek project to the BC EAO/CEA Agency marks the end of a 10 month process to completely update, restructure and rewrite the EA application/ EIS, and represents another milestone in the development of Harper Creek” noted Frank D. Wheatley, CEO of Yellowhead.

“The EA application/EIS reflects our efforts over the past year to incorporate a series of design improvements, with a particular focus on waste and water management, to further reduce and mitigate the potential environmental impacts resulting from the development of Harper Creek” continued Wheatley.

With the submission of the EA application to the BC EAO, the 30-day screening period to ensure that the EA application is complete, has now commenced.

Once the EA application has been screened and accepted by BC Environmental Assessment Office, BC EAO has a 180-day period to complete its review, with the involvement of a Working Group, including representatives of First Nations, local governments and other government agencies.

The BC EAO then will prepare an assessment report for a decision by the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Energy and Mines on granting an environmental assessment certificate for the Harper Creek project.

In coordination with the British Columbia provincial permitting process, CEA Agency will review the EIS. In April 2013, the company submitted its original application for an environmental assessment certificate for the project to BC EAO. In May 2013, BC EAO identified a number of deficiencies with, and provided a number of comments on, the original application, and requested that the company address such

deficiencies and comments.

Yellowhead believes the EA application submitted to the BC EAO on Tuesday addresses all of those comments and deficiencies.

About the Harper Creek Project Harper Creek is a proposed 70,000 tonnesper-day open pit copper mine with a 28 year mine life, located in the Thompson-Nicola region of British Columbia near Vavenby.

Harper Creek has a four year development period, with the initial two years focused on environmental and construction permitting, and the second two years dedicated to construction. Harper Creek would provide up to 660 jobs during construction and up to 450 permanent jobs during operations.

About Yellowhead Mining Inc. Yellowhead Mining Inc. is a development stage company with a 100 per cent interest in the Harper Creek project.

Global warming stalled politically too VICTORIA – On most issues this column discusses, the feedback I receive is generally negative.

One exception has been human-caused climate change, where my mail runs three to one in favour of a skeptical approach. Most express relief at having someone question the exaggerated or false claims advanced by environmentalists who strive to paint Alberta and B.C. as home to uniquely evil climate crimes.

As mentioned last week, this is an urgent issue in B.C. as the government pushes to develop liquefied natural gas exports.

The B.C. Liberal approach to limit only the “intensity” of greenhouse gas emissions from LNG production, and make no commitment on the majority of emissions from upstream gas production, looks like the effective end of Gordon Campbell’s crusade to lead North America in “climate action.”

The government has also abandoned Campbell’s collapsed effort to set up a capand-trade system with various U.S. states to regulate emissions. Which brings me to a key reason for public skepticism.

Going back to Jean Chrétien’s lip service to the Kyoto Accord, the world-wide effort to rein in fossil fuel emissions has been a smog of hypocrisy, hollow promises and failed experiments.

The next grand climate summit is scheduled for Paris next summer, although the vast international green bureaucracy will first have to jet to Peru for a pre-summit summit in December. Expect dancing polar bears in the hot sun.

The European Union has just agreed to a Campbell-like new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 per cent by 2030. But that’s dependent on the Paris summit reaching a legally binding international deal, something the United States remains unwilling to do. Meanwhile, Germany is building new coal-fired power plants.

In Ontario, a grandiose scheme to replace coal-fired power with wind, solar and other renewables has produced steeply rising electricity rates and a political scandal over a cancelled plan to build gas-fired capacity.

The public continues to be bombarded with ginned-up stories of environmental destruction. You may have seen shocking TV reports in October of a “haul-out” of thousands of walruses on beaches around the Chukchi Sea in Alaska and Russia, with animals trampling each other.

The World Wildlife Fund and U.S. biologists rushed to media to frame this as a crisis caused by a lack of sea ice.

This claim has been demolished by Susan Crockford, an evolutionary biologist who teaches at the University of Victoria. Her paper and brief video document a long, pre-industrial history of these events. She concludes that they are a sign of overpopulation in the now-protected walrus herds.

Crockford’s website debunks similar claims made about supposedly disappearing polar bears that have been a mainstay over the years to drive the global warming catastrophe narrative.

In terms of actual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, there are signs of progress. The United States has made considerable strides, thanks to abundant shale gas that has allowed it to switch from some of its 600-odd coal-fired power plants.

Which brings us back to B.C.’s push for natural gas exports. The NDP claims to support this, but has spent hours in the legislature warning of a giveaway of the resource, imagined fracking disasters and LNG tanker explosions and everything else they can dream up to throw at it.

This is the same party that campaigned against the carbon tax in 2009 and hasn’t had a coherent energy policy since.

But this isn’t some partisan game. It’s about whether B.C. maintains its gas industry. And so far natural gas is the only thing that has substantially cut carbon emissions.

TB dwarfs Ebola deaths To the editor; While the world watches in morbid fascination as Ebola burns through west Africa, there’s another, more patient killer that will claim far more victims.

Unlike Ebola, tuberculosis takes its victims slowly, ensuring that on average a TB sufferer infects almost a dozen others before they are treated – or die.

Each year nine million people are newly infected with TB, a third never diagnosed. 1.4 million will die. These numbers dwarf the deaths by Ebola, the disease that has gripped the world with fear.

Ebola is a new threat and certainly needs attention. But for years now Canada has been at the forefront of helping the world rid itself of the an-

cient plague of TB. Canada launched TB REACH in 2009, and in its first year this program increased detection and treatment of TB up to 100 per cent in some areas. Its reach has since expanded to 145 projects in 36 countries, and millions of lives have been saved.

Canada is the sole funder of TB REACH, and the time for funding renewal is here. As we did in 2009, Canada needs to pledge another 120 million dollars over five years so that TB REACH can continue with its successful and innovative outreach programs.

Omnibus bills are an abuse of process To the editor; Re: Omnibus Bill Targets Bees - and More (Nov. 6/14 edition): The Conservative government’s latest omnibus bill is another attempt to undermine good government and local MP Cathy McLeod?s defence of it is disappointing. Omnibus bills are an abuse of process and show contempt for parliament.

The Prime Minister, with the full support of government MPs like Cathy McLeod, have buried important legislation in this 458 page bill hoping that it will not get the full and democratic debate it deserves. This is another example of the Harper government using omnibus bills to subvert democracy.

The mammoth bill includes a wide range of measures, including legislation that could

allow provincial governments to restrict or deny income assistance to refugee claimants.

Restricting basic income is a violation of human rights and reminiscent of Harper’s previous decision to limit and deny refugee claimants? access to universal, public health care. It took a federal court judge to block that legislation, saying it constituted “cruel and unusual? treatment, put lives at risk, and that it ?outraged Canadian standards of decency?. The government is appealing the federal court decision.

I have met many Barriere residents and I think they would expect their MP to support refugee claimants and stand up for those needing health care and assistance. That’s what has made this country so strong, so diverse, and so prosperous. Why is Cathy

McLeod subverting democracy and human decency?

Canadians are caring people by nature and want to help those in need to do well, and to make a contribution to our country.

Harper’s legislation is offensive and must be stopped.

Harper Conservatives, like Liberals before them, use omnibus bills to ram through changes to legislation without proper debate.

The Harper government’s contempt for Parliament and democ-

racy has become so ingrained that it could not restrain itself, even in the solidarity of Canadians, in the days following of an attack on the greatest symbol of our democracy.

Canadians and our system of democracy deserve better. In 2015 Canadians have an opportunity to put an end to this nonsense and fix Ottawa.

25 years later: The Berlin Wall

In China, the communists had just massacred the students in Tiananmen Square and won themselves another quarter-century in power.

On the other hand, the Poles voted overwhelmingly for Solidarity in June and,

by September, Hungary had opened its border with the West.

But, it was the fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9, 1989, that really opened the floodgates.

I had been spending a lot of time in the old Soviet Union since 1987, when I visited Moscow after a five-year absence and found the place unrecognizable. People had lost their fear: In the kitchens and, sometimes in the streets, they were saying what they really thought. It was the first time I had gone to Russia without feeling I had left Planet Earth.

I went home and told my friendly neighbourhood network something very big was going to happen.

I didn’t know exactly what but, if they gave me a travel budget, I’d spend a couple of weeks in the Soviet bloc interviewing people every three months and when the big thing happened, I’d give them an instant radio series on it.

Networks had more money and more nerve in those days, so they said yes.

By 1989, I had kind of worked out what was going to happen, but I didn’t know if it could all be done non-violently. The signs were good — I had spent much of the summer in the Soviet Union and the first big demos had already happened peacefully in Moscow — but, where and when the dam would finally break was still anybody’s guess.

Then, in early September, I flew from Moscow to Hungary for a quick look around.

On the way into Budapest from the airport, the streets were full of abandoned East German cars, mostly pathetic Trabis any sensible person would abandon. But, still . . .

The taxi driver explained Hungary had opened its border with Austria. East Germans were coming down in

droves across the “fraternal” communist country of Czechoslovakia (no visa needed) to travel onward to Austria and then to West Germany.

So, I had the taxi take me up to the Young Pioneer Camp in the hills behind Buda that was serving as a transit camp.

Every few minutes, a taxi would pull up and East Germans — usually a young

so easy. They were fed up to the back teeth with the pettyminded, boring communist bullies who dominated their lives and they were sick of being poor, but nobody wanted to die in an old-fashioned revolution.

Yet the communist ideology obliged the believers to launch a civil war rather than surrender power peacefully.

So, when it turned out non-violence worked even against communists, at least in Europe, people quite rightly felt they had been very lucky.

As a bonus, the threat of a nuclear world war went away.

The old NATO alliance still trundles on a quarter-century later, picking up work wherever it can, but it has become the sound of one hand clapping.

There were some problems later on in places like Romania and Russia, but it was a radical, amazingly peaceful revolution in a part of the world that was not best known for its ability to change peacefully.

So, once the celebrations died down in Berlin, I rented a car and drove off to Warsaw to see how the new post-communist government was doing in Poland.

I parked outside a government ministry and, while I was inside interviewing the minister, somebody broke into my car and stole my bag, including all the interview tapes from Berlin and the piece of the wall I was bringing home to my daughter.

The soldiers marching back and forth inside the fence saw it happen, but pointed out stopping thieves was not their job.

I reported the theft to the police for insurance purposes and explained to them that, if they spotted a well-dressed man who was limping badly, it was probably the thief.

The stolen bag contained the suit I wore for interviewing presidents, but I had mistakenly packed two left dress shoes with it. They didn’t laugh — they had been trained by the communists, after all — so I drove off down to Prague for the next revolution.

couple — would get out. Every hour, an enormous coach would drive up and take them all off to the West. And, after an hour or so interviewing them as they arrived at the gate, I knew what was going to happen next.

They didn’t see themselves as refugees fleeing to start a new life in the West. They were taking advantage of an opportunity to see the West and they’d be safe there if things went badly wrong in East Germany, but most fully expected to be home again, in a democratic East Germany, within a year.

When I got on the plane home, I started writing a piece in which I compared East Germany’s communist regime to a Walt Disney character who had run off a cliff — but wouldn’t actually start to fall until he looked down.

And, as soon as we landed, I booked a ticket back to Berlin for late October. I was just in time for a great party.

What astonished everyone was the way the old system just rolled over and died.

This amazing new technique of non-violent revolution had been working well in Asia since 1986 — the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Bangladesh — but taking down a communist regime seemed like a much more dangerous and doubtful enterprise, especially after Tiananmen Square.

Minister promises more child protection workers

By Tom Fletcher Black Press B.C.’s struggling child protection service will be strengthened by the addition of 200 more social worker and support staff positions over the next two years, Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux says.

The announcement came a day after the union representing staff issued a report saying they continue to deal with excessive workload and staff shortages due to high staff turnover, unfilled positions and budget cuts.

Cadieux said the additional staff and centralizing of child protection intake screening is a response to the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union report, and previous critical reports by Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.

The BCGEU estimates that 80 per cent of social workers have more than the recommended 20 cases, with nearly half carrying more than 30 and some reporting caseloads of 70 or more.

Cadieux said 70 auxiliary employees are being made permanent immediately, mostly in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, and the target is to bring the total to 200 new positions by the end of 2016.

“We’ve heard the concerns of our staff about their workload, about their inability to do all of the things that they feel are necessary,” Cadieux said.

“We had a fantastic number of cards entered last year, and we hope to see all the businesses participate again this year,” says Chamber rep Marie Downing.

Late night shopping will be on Friday, Dec. 12, with stores being open until 8 p.m., home-based businesses and farmer’s market in the Legion basement from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Christmas Tree Lightup and Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13, and the Senior’s Christmas Sale Nov. 29 are just a part of scheduled events.

Candlelight and Holly quite a show North Thompson Star/Journal The Annual Candlelight and Holly Arts and Craft Sale hosted by the Yellowhead Artists Cooperative took place over three days last weekend.

The Barriere Legion basement was overflowing with outstanding art and numerous unique creations for Christmas gift giving, with items affordable for every pocketbook. Paintings, pottery, photography, fiber arts, wood carving, jellies, hand crafted clothing, jewelry and more, all providing shoppers with numerous choices and the opportunity to purchase those special items not available in big box stores.

There was also a silent auction with some interesting merchandise, and a great opportunity to win a work by Shirley Kristensen, which was won by Darlene Hagen.

The event also hosted a dedication to long time Yellowhead Artist Shirley Kristensen for her work with the Co-op and numerous artists over the years. Kristensen was also one of the founding members of the Candlelight and Holly

event, which was hosted in her home for many years before it outgrew the house and had to move to larger premises. Kristensen’s name is synonymous with art in the North Thompson Valley. Her paintings of ranching life hang in many homes, and her work with scrimshaw and other mediums is equally impressive.

There was a gallery display with some of Kristensen’s work, as well as some of her work available for purchase.

Yellowhead artist Josie Wilson made the presentation to Shirley’s husband Gunnar, due to Shirley being unable to attend for health reasons.

He was accompanied by his sister, and friends of the family.

Wilson said during the dedication, “Shirley was always ready to lend a hand or offer advice for any artist who needed it. She would say “let me help”, and then do just that.

Kristensen has fought through a number of health challenges over the years, and each time rallied and come back to the art that she loves.

“I keep hoping that this time she will be able to come back as well,” said Wilson.

To have better bladder control, keep your weight in control. Don’t smoke. Smoking can double your chances of developing incontinence. Keep active. Keep coffee and alcohol consumption down. These can irritate the bladder.

Men can get breast cancer too. Here’s a few things to watch for: nipples turning inward, puckering of the skin in the breast area; nipples becoming red or scaly; discharge from the nipples. See your doctor for a check-up. Early detection means there is more options for early successful treatment.

There are two vaccines that seniors should get. One is the vaccine against pneumonia.

The other is the anti-shingles vaccine which is recommended for all adults over 60 with no immune system problems. You may have to pay for it yourself although some private drug plans may cover it.

Tax Rate a Canuck competitive advantage North Thompson Star/Journal A new report coauthored and released Monday by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) and Americans for Tax Reform shows that Vancouver Canuck players paid $29.4 million in income tax last year – 44.8 per cent of their combined $65.7 million salaries.

The report, Home Ice Tax Disadvantage: How personal income taxes impact NHL players, teams and the salary cap, shows that 57 per cent of free agents who changed teams in the off-season went to cities with better tax rates. And all five new Vancouver Canucks saved money by hanging their helmets at Rogers Arena.

Jason Garrison, meanwhile, got a bonus bump by agreeing to move to the Tampa Bay Lightning: he saves $269,368 in taxes this year.

Clearwater Midgets beat 100 Mile House twice The Times Clearwater Midgets played two exhibition games against 100 Mile House at the Sportsplex last weekend and won both. The scores were 5-1 and 11-3.

“Hundred Mile was undisciplined and took several penalties,” said Clearwater coach Tim Walker. “We had a huge landmark in the first game by taking only one penalty (never happened before) but this is one of our chief aims this year.”

Walker said one particular 100 Mile House player was a hazard, running around injuring people. Apparently he took out two Clearwater players during game one.

Because of the small size of the program, Clearwater Midgets are classified as a Tier 4 team this year. However, they are playing in a Tier 3 league because there aren’t enough Tier 4 teams nearby. Only Kelowna has another Tier 4 team.

“This puts us playing more skilled teams with more players,” said Walker. “Even so, we have done well and are growing each game.

Though we didn’t win any league games yet this year, we have come very close.”

The local squad will host the Midget Tier 4 provincial championships again this year and are looking forward to it, the Clearwater coach reported.

Wells Gray treasure hunt winner named

Winner of the draw was Michael Shook, a great-grandson of Francis Shook (Emery), one of two sisters who, as young women in 1932, built the historic Bee Farm in what is now Wells Gray Park.

The younger Shook won his choice of the Robert Bateman painting of an eagle’s head that Walchuk is holding or a cash prize. The painting was on display at the credit union in Clearwater over the summer.

The most important part of your camera is the lens Ask any experienced photographer whether to buy a new camera or a new lens and the answer will usually be, “it’s all about the glass,” or, “a good lens is more important than a good camera.”

A bad lens on a good camera will still make poor images, but a good lens on a poor or average camera will most likely give the photographer good results.

I listened to several friends talking over coffee about reviews they had read about the latest camera offering from Canon.

The discussion began with questions like, “why does a photographer that doesn’t shoot sports need a camera with seven or eight frames a second” and “I really don’t spend much time shooting in low light situations, so why would I spend extra money on a camera because it is capable of a high ISO.” However, as expected, it wasn’t long before the talk easily turned to an exchange of views on lenses. Remember, because after all, “it’s all

about the glass.”

The conversation easily moved from a difference of opinion between those that preferred prime (fixed focal length) lenses, and those, like me, that chose multi-focal length (zoom) lenses.

We talked about the importance of wide angle and, of course, wide aperture lenses.

Just because you can change the lens doesn’t mean you have to, but I don’t know many photographers that are that sensible.

Mostly we are willing to change lenses as soon as we have extra cash in our pockets, more emotional and impulsive than sensible.

I know very few are content with the short zoom that came as a package with the camera any more than they are with the tires the manufacturer installed on their car.

Yes, the lenses, just like the tires aren’t high quality, but that’s not my point. What I mean is that changing lenses is like changing the visual personality of the image, and most photographers I know are engaged in,

John E n ma n what I’ll call, a search for a perspective that fits their personality and personal vision.

The camera might capture some subject’s personality, but the lens, in my opinion, says more about the photographer than the subject.

Several photographers standing on a picturesque hillside using the same camera and lens will probably produce much the same image, but give them each a different lens and the resulting images will be diverse, distinct, and individual.

Yes, it is all about the glass, and there is such a pleasing and very exciting diversity of lenses out there waiting for each photographer to choose, discard, and choose again as they explore and create within this stimulating medium of photography.

As I wrote those words I wondered if

there were others that I could use that were more applicable than stimulating. I could have used, intoxicating, invigorating, or even compelling. They all fit and, I think, could apply to some of the feelings I could see and hear from those photographers lounging around my shop drinking warm coffee on a cold November day as they talked about the lenses they used and would like to use.

A new camera is a lot of fun, but it really is “all about the glass.

The scam, which has been practised for several years, sees the fraudulent telemarketers call random telephone numbers across the country in an effort to sell questionable holiday packages to Mexico.

The callers mask the real number they are calling from with a more familiar phone number from local area codes to increase the likelihood the person will answer the phone.

The company names represented on these phone calls have been: • Luxury Getaway Group (luxurygetawaygroup.com) • Caribbean Sun Trips (caribbeansuntrips.com) • Caribbean Sun Group (caribbeansungroup.net) • Global Group Travel WestJet officials say their airline does not use telemarketers or make telemarketing phone calls,

nor does it share customers’ private information with third parties for the purposes of telemarketing.

The airline is not connected in any way to any of these companies.

The public can report these phone calls and other fraudulent activity to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre by going online to antifraudcentre-centreantifraude. ca/english/index.html or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

Canadians who are registered on the National Do Not Call List should also report these phone calls to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission through the list operator online at lnnte-dncl.gc.ca or by calling 1-866-580-3625.

Information, such as the date and time of the call, the telemarketer’s name and telephone number, the telephone number that received the call and any additional information that would identify the caller, or on whose behalf the call is being made, such as a website, will help the CRTC’s enforcement officers.

Crustless Quiche 1 tbsp butter 1 medium onion, chopped 1 cup chopped broccoli 1 cup milk 4 large eggs ¾ cup bisquick baking mix 1/3 tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 1 tin (213g) salmon, drained, fl aked 1 cup grated Swiss cheese ¼ tsp dried dillweed Melt butter and sauté onion for five minutes or until tender. Stir in broccoli, cook one minute. Beat together milk, baking mix, dill, salt and pepper. Stir in salmon, cheese and broccoli mixture.

Pour into greased 10 inch pie plate.

Bake at 400F for 30-35 minutes or until a knife inserted close to centre comes out clean. Let stand for 5 minutes.

RCMP winter driving tips The Times Ice, snow and slippery highway-driving in winter conditions can be both challenging and frustrating.

Here are some helpful tips from Clearwater RCMP/Central Interior Traffic Services and ICBC to keep you and your loved ones safer on the road.

Hydroplaning Hydroplaning happens when the tires lose contact with the road surface and float on a film of water. If you find yourself hydroplaning, ease off the accelerator and keep steering in the direction you want to go. Avoid braking.

Black ice During the winter,

temperatures change quickly, which can cause unpredictable road conditions. Although the road may look the same, black ice can form unexpectedly and may not be visible.

Black ice is commonly found on roads with shaded areas, bridges, overpasses and intersections where car exhaust and packed snow freezes quickly.

If you drive over black ice and start to skid, ease off the accelerator, and look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go. Don’t brake-this will make the situation worse.

You may need to repeat this manoeuvre several times before

you regain control.

Adjust for conditions Potholes can be another hazard during the cold and wet weather. For all types of winter hazards, remember two key tips: reduce your speed and increase your following distance. The more time you have to react to the hazard the better.

• Do not use cruise control in wet or slippery conditions.

• Give yourself more time to get where you are going.

• Speed limits are set for ideal conditions.

Before you head off to your next destination, it helps to check traffic, road and weather conditions along the way.

After a lengthy battle with cancer, Art Wagstaff passed away on November 13, 2014.

Art was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. When he was four years old, his family moved to a farm in Rolling Hills, Alberta.

After the farm was sold he spent a brief stint working in construction in Edmonton and then joined the Air Force.

That’s what’s happened in my life recently.

On Aug. 26 my father passed away after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure in February.

It was hard to believe because my dad was a runner and walked everywhere.

I was able to visit with him the weeks leading up to his death and find myself talking to him more often now than I did the last few years.

came a farmer/rancher for 20 years. Following the sale of the farm in 1991 he worked as a real estate agent until he retired in 1994.

After being married for 31 years, my husband and I just bought a home that we keep pinching ourselves about.

It’s the 12th home we’ve lived in together and the third home we’ve owned.

When our six children were all living at home, our house measured 960 square feet and it was all on one level.

Add to that the fact it was in Prince Rupert where it rains two thirds of the time.

Lego featured largely in the lives of our kids and sleepovers mainly happened when one of the siblings was sleeping over at someone else’s place.

The year I stayed behind to let our eldest son graduate from high school before we moved to Williams Lake, our small house felt quite comfortable with the three boys and myself.

We fixed it up to rent it out and on the day of our departure we ran around taking photographs for insurance and I said to my husband that if we were ever coming back it would be roomy if it was just the two of us.

Two years after renting the house out our tenants skipped town and left a disaster so we fixed it up, sold it and continued renting here. That was until last month when we noticed a home we felt could suit us for the next few decades.

As for the puppy, that decision emerged after our youngest decided if we were buying a home then we could get a dog. A few days later his father noticed George on the BCSPCA website.

She was one of nine puppies from a German Shepherd/Husky cross mom who was rescued. Within a few days of joining our family, George became Luna, part of our pet family — cats Java and Mooch.

I have never expected much and realize things can vanish quickly. However, this morning as I walked with Luna in the woods behind our house I knew deep down I was home.

Making sense of disasters: Manmade or natural Pause For Thought

Two major anniversaries are being observed this month on two different continents and with varied emotions.

The 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is a cause of major celebration in Germany, with songs and music by souls set free from separation and division.

On the other side of the world, the first anniversary of Super Typhoon Haiyan that hit the island nation of the Philippines, with much loss of lives and intense property damages, also falls in November.

It’s heartening to learn this week the Canadian government is fast-tracking family sponsorship of some of the victims of the typhoon, including orphans left behind, to settle down in Canada.

I wish I could distance myself from the accompanying questions raised by manmade or natural disasters on such gigantic scales affecting huge number of lives.

In some ways, it is easier for me to address human needs than to process such disasters, particularly natural ones, theologically — to find the reasons for mass suffering and death.

As the death toll mounted in the Philippines a year ago, ques-

tions gnawed at my soul: Why all of this meaningless madness of epic proportions?

It’s estimated the Berlin Wall accounted for 1,300 lives lost in pursuit of freedom.

Is God telling us something specific?

On one hand, I wish I knew a final and definite answer. But, that requires me to be God. Barring such possibility, I can propose some tentative responses with scriptural and circumstantial warrants.

The causes for unexplainable natural disasters are complicated since the perpetrators seem invisible and their purposes incomprehensible (unlike manmade disasters, like uprooting of lives where we can identify someone or group to blame).

The Bible does speak about God’s judgment on sin through natural disasters.

The flood was directly related to human sin, as was the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

God’s righteousness, in combination with his mercy and goodness, calls for judging sin with restraint.

The most radical event in the early history of the earth was humankind’s fall away from God. The mother-of-alldisasters put earth un-

der God’s curse, and humanity lost immediate existential relationship to him.

Earth is not heaven and, often, feels like hell — for it is groaning, grunting and growling in futility.

Our blue planet is still paying for mankind’s original departure from the Creator.

That fall feature comes close to the best biblical explanation for natural cataclysms.

Yet, the issue of death’s randomness remains.

Why do disasters seem so arbitrary and haphazard?

Why are ‘good’ people affected as much as ‘bad’ ones?

And why are some bad people spared?

The question of apparent randomness brings us to the demonic factor in executing natural disasters.

Whether directly or indirectly, we factor in Satan’s role in human suffering and death.

Satan defied God’s sovereignty, cast out of heaven to earth.

Our earth began to shudder and continues to tremble. That could explain why there are earthquakes, occurring almost daily.

Only when humans are present do complex natural phenomena — many of them observable to physicists — turn into disasters.

If no one died, we would have simply viewed it as natural, even normal, events.

Cataclysms only turn into catastrophes when humans are affected.

Nature is wobbly, infected and terrorized by Satan.

He has been thrown down from heaven in eternity and toppled on earth in history.

Natural disasters are not “acts of God,” as the insurance industry would describe them.

They could easily be “acts of Satan.”

We can underestimate Satan’s power, but anything he does is under the determinative control of God. When God’s plans for this worn earth are done, the sovereign Creator will create the new earth, one totally attached to him.

But disasters, sadly, provoke mankind’s resistance and defiance of God. Christians can function as watchmen warning people of future disaster and respectfully pleading for the apathetic to awaken and the defiant to become compliant to God’s terms for spiritual salvation (Ezekiel 33:1-6).

Added to that, on a temporal level at least, disasters bring out the best in compassion and community.

The whole world — united for search and rescue, recovery and aid, love and unity, relief and development — is fulfillment of God’s mission through human hands.

Christians, with their special obligation to love their neighbours and especially to do good to the household of faith (Galatians 6:10), ought to serve in the forefront of relief efforts with unselfish abandon and generosity. * Narayan Mitra is a columnist for Kamloops This Week. mitraryan225@yahoo.ca

The Dairy Dilemma: Should you be drinking cow’s milk?

I have found that going down the dairy aisle has become a long process, trying to pick between soy, almond, coconut, hemp, or cow’s milk. It is even more difficult when the media is saying that we should move away from cow’s milk, but is this true? The simple answer is: if you can drink cow’s milk without having any adverse reactions, it is a safe and nutritious beverage choice.

Why Cow’s Milk is a Good Choice: Cow’s milk is an affordable source of protein. Compared to milk alternatives it has the most protein with 8 grams per cup. Soy milk is close behind with 6 grams, whereas almond milk, rice milk and coconut milk have only 1 g or less of protein per cup. If you drink a milk alternative it is important to make sure you are choosing protein foods in your diet such as lean meats, beans, nuts and tofu. This is because most milk alternatives are not considered a good source of protein.

Cow’s milk is also a great source of vitamin D and calcium, which are important for bone health.

These nutrients protect you from issues like osteoporosis as you age.

Some people have argued that humans cannot absorb the calcium in cow’s milk; however a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that the calcium in cow’s milk is more readily absorbed than the calcium in fortified milk alternatives and foods such as spinach and almonds.

Choosing a Milk Alternative: Despite being a nutritious choice, there are many reasons why people cannot drink cow’s milk.

For example, some people have a dairy allergy, lactose intolerance or follow a special diet such as veganism. If you do not drink milk, here are some tips for choosing a healthy alternative: -Make sure you choose a product that is fortified. The nutrition label should have at least 30% of your Daily Value of calcium and 45% of your Daily Value for vitamin D. -Choose a product that is unsweetened. Many milk alternatives contain added sugars so check the ingredients list.

Adding milk into the diet everyday can be easy, especially with this delicious recipe!

Home Brewed Chai Tea: Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 cinnamon stick 6 whole cardamom pods, lightly crushed 6 whole cloves 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger root, peeled and thinly sliced 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns 2 single-serve black tea bags or 1 tablespoon loose black tea 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 cup low-fat (1%) milk or unsweetened milk alternative 3 cups of water Preparation: Place cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, peppercorns and 3 cups water into a small pot and bring to a boil.

Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and set aside to steep for 10 minutes.

Return pot to the heat and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add tea, cover and set aside to steep for 3 to 5 minutes.

Strain through a fine mesh sieve, discarding solids, and then return liquid to the pot.

Stir in sugar and milk and heat over low heat for 1 minute.
