Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Williams Lake has a new mayor.

Preliminary results from Saturday’s municipal election gave Walt Cobb the victory, garnering 1,334 votes and beating out his challengers, including incumbent Kerry Cook.

Longtime city councillor Surinderpal Rathor fought to a good second-place finish with 1,219 votes, while Cook received 880 votes and John Bjornstrom had 91.

“This is so fantastic,” Cobb said election night from the location of his former men’s clothing store on Oliver Street, surrounded by supporters. “I’m

so happy. When I was visiting different businesses and going door-to-door I heard that the people were ready for a change and I’m glad they chose me as the change.”

Mayor Cook congratulated Cobb on being elected and said she wished him the very best in his term as mayor.

Rathor, who served 21 consecutive years on council, also wished Cobb success.

“I respect the decision of the voters,” Rathor said.

Williams Lake City Page Chief Election Officer declares official results Voters say yes to Sam Ketcham Pool Renovations borrowing bylaw Central Cariboo – The Cariboo Regional District’s Chief Election Officer has now declared the results as official for the Sam Ketcham Pool (SKP) Renovations and Upgrades Referendum. A total of 4,240 central Cariboo residents participated in the SKP Referendum through mail-in ballots, advance polls and general voting day held this past Saturday. Sixty-eight per cent of the eligible voters voted in favour of the Cariboo Regional District borrowing up to $10 million over 20 years for renovations and upgrades to the Sam Ketcham Pool at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. The remainder of the cost of the approximately $11.3 million project will need to be made up from grants, fundraising and capital reserves.

Business sense dominates new council Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Williams Lake city council will have a new look after the 2014 election.

All three incumbents who ran from last term’s council were re-elected, however, it was the newcomers who won the most votes.

Businessman and former mayor Scott Nelson took home the most votes with 1,946.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” Nelson said of the results.

Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce president Jason Ryll, in his first race, won 1,789 votes while business owner Craig Smith garnered 1,688.

Incumbents Sue Zacharias received 1,577 votes, Ivan Bon-

nell won 1,501 and Laurie Walters had 1,500.

Mayor elect Walt Cobb described the newly elected council as one with a good range of experience, although he said he was surprised the three incumbents were re-elected be-

cause the feeling on the street was that people wanted a clean sweep.

“In a sense it will be easier for me because I’ll have some councillors there with experience,” he said.

Six other people ran for councillor positions including

Peter Bowman who received 1,106 votes, Marnie Brenner who had 1,040, Sue Lachance who had 1,452, Wayne Lucier who had 1,073, Bobbi-Joe Macnair who had 1,288 and Tovi Pare who had 1,291.

The city said Saturday a total of 3,565

of 7,777 estimated eligible electors voted resulting in a 45.8 per cent voter turnout.

This compares to the 2011 general local election in which a total of 3,638 of 7,173 estimated eligible electors voted resulting in a 50.7 per cent voter turnout,

the 2008 election, in which a total of 2,989 of 6,682 estimated eligible electors voted resulting in a 44.7 per cent voter turnout, and the 2005 general local election in which 3,857 of 7,769 eligible electors resulting in a voter turnout of 49.6 per cent.

Majority says yes to Sam Ketcham Pool upgrades Sixty-eight per cent support pool referendum The majority of voters have approved renovations and upgrades to the Sam Ketcham Pool in Williams Lake.

“A total of 4,240 Central Cariboo residents participated in the SKP Referendum through mail-in bal-

lots, advance polls and general voting day held this past Saturday,” noted a joint press released from the Cariboo Regional District and City of Williams Lake.

The amount in favour represented 68

per cent of the vote, allowing the CRD to borrow up to $10 million over 20 years for the pool while the remaining money needed for the estimated $11.3 million-project will need to be made up from grants, fun-

draising and capital reserves.

It is anticipated the next step will be for the CRD to approved the borrowing bylaw at its Dec. 12 meeting.

After that the CRD board will begin working on the design

phase with construction expected to begin in 2016.

Cobb said he’s contacted everyone who ran for council to consider working with him as he takes on the role of mayor.

“We need ideas. I don’t have all the answers,” he said.

Cobb was mayor from 1990 to 1996 and a councillor from 1980 to 1990 and said it was

a big decision to run for mayor.

“Part of it because I was mayor before and I didn’t want to be perceived as a hasbeen trying to make a comeback. But I felt so strongly that our municipality was going backwards that I couldn’t let it happen and if I could make a difference I was willing to put my name forward to do that.”

Fresh from a meeting with the city’s CAO Darrell Garceau Monday, Cobb, 70, showed no signs of his age as he was quick to embark on his election promises by meeting

with officials about city business.

“I met with the chief administrative officer to tell him one thing I don’t like is the committee of the whole meeting,” Cobb said.

“It’s perception more than anything because they do the committee of the whole and they have their discussion downstairs and then they get to the council meeting and vote.

To me that’s not open council.”

Cobb wants the discussion to happen at the council table where it’s recorded.

He also vowed to be more accessible to media.

“I want people to be able to call me or one of the council members,” he said. “How do we get to know what council members really think if all

people see is a press release?”

Cobb is also eager to meet with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure about the proposed upgrades and intersection changes to Highway 97 at Carson Drive and Toop Road, adding he hasn’t been part of the discussions.

Fifth of lakecity renters paying more than 50 per cent of income Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer A fifth of Williams Lake renters are paying more than 50 per cent of their income on rent says a housing study released this week.

In its Rental Housing Index, the BC Non-Profit Housing Association also showed another 38 per cent of renters in the lakecity are paying more than 30 percent of their gross income on rent.

“For those folks pay-

ing more than 50 per cent that’s a real crisis level of spending,” said Tony Roy, executive director of BCNPHA. “They will be having a hard time keeping their place and are at risk of becoming homeless.”

Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The Williams Lake SPCA branch isn’t adopting out any dogs this week after a puppy arrived at the shelter infected with parvovirus last week.

“It’s so easy to spread,” branch manager Liz Dighton said of parvovirus. “Anytime a puppy comes in sick we do a lockdown for at least a week.”

Parvovirus is really bad in Williams Lake, she said.

To create the index, the association pored over census data and Roy said the index will be used as a baseline for gathering further information.

In Canada higher rental rates have resulted from a downloading from the federal government, Roy said, adding there used to be lots of money in the federal budget for affordable housing and it’s still there but not being allocated.

“All the new housing that was built was

built 30 years ago and the mortgages on those are coming to an end,” Roy said. “Government is keeping the money as surplus revenue, but if they kept spending the same amount they would have billions of dollars to build new affordable housing for people in need.”

Roy said it’s important that affordable housing be part of official community plans and hopefully the index will help.

“I think people underestimate how many people in a community are renters and yet we don’t always plan our communities for renters.”

In Williams Lake there are 1,670 renters paying an average cost for rent plus utilities of $729.

That compares to Quesnel where there are 1,535 renters, paying on average $645 for rent plus utilities.

The infected puppy arrived Wednesday and began showing symptoms of being very subdued.

“They tend to internalize themselves and then you notice a bit of vomiting and diarrhea and it comes on full bang and the puppy looks sicker than a dog,” Dighton said.

The lockdown will be lifted in a week as long as no other dogs exhibit parvovirus symptoms.

But if other dogs come forward with symptoms, whether or not it’s parvovirus, the SPCA locks down for an additional week to be on the safe side, Dighton said.

When asked how many dogs are at the shelter right now, Dighton responded “a lot.”

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can produce a life-threatening illness.

The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body, most severely affecting the intestinal tract.

Parvovirus also attacks the white blood cells, and when young animals are infected, the virus can damage the heart muscle and cause lifelong cardiac problems.

Incumbent Sheila Boehm was returned to the Zone 5 seat winning 347 votes to challenger Deb Bischoff ’s 266 votes. In this election there were 66 re-

jected votes and four spoiled votes. Zone 5 includes most of the Cariboo Regional District Areas D,

Wildwood fringe, and Area E, Dog Creek fringe area.

“I am excited to serve for another four

years,” Boehm says. “I think there is lots of potential for changing policies and having a positive influence in the school district. We are currently reviewing our community use of schools policy and trying to involve students in the process.”

In Zone 4 Christine Dyment won the seat with 123 votes to Bev Goldstone’s 83 votes.

Zone 4 includes most of Cariboo Regional District Area F, 150 Mile, Likely, Horsefly

and portions of Area D, Wildwood area.

“I’m feeling great,” Clement said of her win.

“I am looking forward to working with the incumbents on the board and the newcomers. I am hoping my experience will be a benefit in striving for excellence in the district.”

She said the biggest message she received from residents during her campaign is that rural schools need to stay open.

New Cariboo Regional District directors eager to serve Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Newly-elected directors for the Cariboo Regional District said they are ready for the challenge in anticipation of being officially sworn in on Dec. 12.

Saturday’s election named Steve Forseth for Area D, Byron Kemp for Area E and Betty Anderson for Area K. “I am eternally grateful to the people in Area D for electing me and intend to work on their behalf for the next four years,” said Forseth, who garnered 138 votes in a close race against

Blaine Wiggins with 121 votes and Pennie Daffurn who received 96 votes.

Forseth said one of the main concerns he heard from people in the area was about the Wildwood transfer station.

Now that it is staffed, it has specific open hours.

“It may have to go back to the board, but it isn’t a priority,” Forseth said of the changes, adding because tipping fees are now in place at the Wildwood transfer station people are no longer using Wildwood to avoid paying tipping fees.

Kemp, who was very pleased with the results, returns for a second consecutive term.

He received 324 votes while his opponent Phyllis Webstad garnered 141.

“I was pleased, particularly to finish up some of the projects for our area,” Kemp said.

The two main issues have been water and sewer for Mountview and a new access road to the Esler sports fields.

“The Hodgson Road approach isn’t that safe and you get an awful lot of traffic in the spring, summer and fall,” he said.

With Area K being so spread out, the voter turnout wasn’t very high, said Anderson, who received 38 votes, while Geraldine Charleyboy received 11 and Melynda Neufeld received five.

Nevertheless, Anderson said she felt humbled and honoured to be elected.

When she made some phone calls before the election, she heard concerns about the Big Creek watershed, wolf problems for ranchers, the need for more emergency signage on rural

roads, the need to get timber to mills in the Chilcotin, and the state of tourism and employment in the region.

Anderson has lived in the Chilcotin most of her life.

Four the magic number

ell it’s over for another four years.

Focussing on the city elections only, the voter turnout wasn’t great and the results weren’t what many were expecting, but the new council will have the most seasoned politicians in the city’s history.

There are just two new faces, Jason Ryll and Craig Smith.

It’s the second time around for the three former mayors. Scott Nelson and Ivan Bonnell were councillors when Walt Cobb was mayor in the 1990s.

Between them the trio must have at least 50 years of experience. Sue Zacharias and Laurie French Walters have six Connection years each.

Diana French We owe a big thank you to all the candidates.

They cared enough about the community to put their names forward to give citizens a choice. That’s what the democratic process is all about.

Four years can be a long time but hopefully some will try again.

And thanks to Kerry Cook who held the hot seat for two terms, and to Geoff Bourdon and Danica Hughes. We don’t always appreciate how much time and effort it takes to run the city.

A special tip of the hat to Surinderpal Rathor who not only devoted 21 years to council, he’s spent most of his life — 40 years — working for the betterment of this community in so many different ways.

Along with dealing with the election issues (the declining downtown core, economic development, city finances, etc.) there are many other heavy duty matters facing the new council, such as the Mount Polley Mine situation, the controversial Highway 97 intersection plan, and who knows what else will come along.

We can expect an “open for business” approach in dealing with issues as all four of the newly-elected are businessmen.

Four is the magic number, the majority on council.

Another change is that we’ve gone from having four women to two. I have no idea if that will make any difference.

A new direction As the dust settles on another municipal election here in Williams Lake, it seems voters didn’t quite embrace the old adage ‘out with the old and in with the new,’ however, there were some notable changes.

At the top of that list of course is the changing of the guard at city hall.

Former mayor Walt Cobb unseated twotime current mayor Kerry Cook, who was seeking a third term.

The air was thick with tension in the Marie Sharpe gymnasium Saturday night when at about 8:25 p.m. Chief Election Officer Cindy Bouchard started posting the election results on a lined poster paper taped to the gym wall.

The first indication Cook was in trouble was when Bouchard posted the preliminary advanced polls; with John Bjornstrom at 32, Cobb at 468, Cook at 277 and Rathor at 407.

Scrutineers and city staff had to wait a few more minutes (a lifetime in politics) before the numbers revealed the general voting would mirror the advanced polls and give Walt the win he was looking for.

My what a difference time makes.

In the 2011 mayoral race, Cook defeated her challengers Scott Nelson and Walt Cobb by a good number of votes (Cook 1,777, Nelson 1,090 and Cobb 747).

While many would agree there has been a fair share of controversy coming out of city hall during the last term, Cook should be recognized for her community service and for her positive efforts as mayor. Thank you, Kerry. The community will also surely miss Surinderpal Rathor at city hall, who gave up

his seat on council for the past 21 years to make a run for mayor. Thank you, Surinder.

Turning to the councillors, it wasn’t a surprise that Scott Nelson garnered the most votes, coming in at 1,946. After Scott, former Chamber president Jason Ryll came in a close second followed by businessman Craig Smith.

Judging by the voting, residents are sending a clear signal they want a more businessfriendly city hall.

It was interesting to see all three incumbents Sue Zacharias, Ivan Bonnell and Laurie Walters were re-elected, however, they did come in fourth, fifth and sixth place. You can bet residents will be watching closely to see how well they work with the newcomers this term.

In CRD politics, voters chose political blogger Steve Forseth as their Area D director, realtor and rancher Betty Anderson took Area K while Bryon Kemp kept his seat in Area E. Second-term School District 27 trustee Sheila Boehm kept her seat on the board while newcomer Christine Dyment also won a seat.

Last but not least, city and rural residents voted yes to proposed pool upgrades.

Though the proposal has had its share of opposition, it’s good the see residents understand the value in having modern amenities available in our community.

Thanks to all the candidates who were brave enough to put their names forward to serve the community.

Balancing budgets and reducing debt in city Editor: Balancing a budget is easy. Anyone can do it. No imagination required.

At the household level, cuts to heat and electricity are not possible.

So we look to the shopping cart, child care, and clothing.

At the government level, we look to services and infrastructure.

Since the financial crisis of 2008, caused by the reckless deals of investment banks, the federal government has been cutting spending to balance the budget for the 2015 election.

Bailouts by government to the banks have returned these institutions to prosperity.

It has been estimated by economists that Canada is in a similar situation of spending on infrastructure and services comparable to 1948.

The justification for this approach is the theory of supply-side economics favoured by the current federal government — fewer or no regulations for corporate interests, reduced trade barriers in the form of lower taxes and tariffs, and a balanced budget signalling a safe place for investment.

The justification is to promote growth.

The theory promises a trickle down of money to those cutting household budgets while trying to balance child care with a job while feeding a family.

John Kenneth Galbraith said

“that supply-side economics was merely a cover for the trickledown approach to economic policy — what an older and less elegant generation called the horse-and-sparrow theory: if you feed the horse enough oats, some will pass through to the road for the sparrows.”

When I read the policy statements expressed by some of the prospects who were seeking municipal political office, I wonder how many of them have torn a page from the current federal government’s playbook?

Balancing the budget is easy and requires no imagination.

I see lots of sparrows picking up crumbs already this winter.

How to provide laundry will be put the through the wringer at Interior hospitals.

The Interior Health Authority notified unionized staff Wednesday that it’s exploring the future of laundry service and specifically whether using a private contractor is financially feasible.

“There is no predetermined option,” said Lori Holloway, IHA regional director of facilities management.

IHA currently has five large and six small laundry sites with 175 employees. In Williams Lake, there are five full-time equiva-

lent staff.

“We want to ensure we have a sustainable laundry service,” said Holloway of the need for the review.

“We have limited capital dollars to support our aging infrastructure.”

IHA spends about $10 million a year to operate the laundry service and it’s believed about $10.5 million is needed over the next several years to replace equipment

such as washing machines.

“Interior Health is not in a position to make significant investments in laundry, but rather place priority on the most pressing patient care needs such as medical equipment, and development of new or upgraded patient care spaces,” states a release.

In the next week, IHA, along with Lower Mainland health

authorities, will issue a joint request for qualification to see if private companies are interested in providing laundry services.

IHA is also meeting with the Hospital Employees Union, which represents laundry staff, to discuss alternatives beyond going to the private sector.

“Nothing is changing today. We are just in the process of determining our options,” said Holloway, who wouldn’t speculate on possible options that could see the service continue under IHA’s mandate.

The earliest any changes could occur is April 2016, but HEU hopes privatization can be stopped.

“We’re really disappointed IHA is considering contracting out,” said Mike Old, HEU communications director.

“Clearly these are important jobs to our members, their families and their communities. They deliver a quality service to the health care system.”

Old says the union will participate in the consultation process with IHA. “Our experience is that contracting out results in lower wages for employees and less control over the service by the health authority,” he said.

“We will try and make sure we protect these jobs and the service.”

The City of Williams Lake has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a non-profit housing society to enter into a partnership for redevelopment of the Cariboo Lodge site, to help address the City’s affordable housing needs.

The vision of the partnership is for a non-profit society to work alongside the City of Williams Lake to vision and design the project. The Society would take on the role of managing the development process, including taking a lead role in identifying funding, and would eventually be responsible for operating the project.

This EOI will be followed by a Request For Proposal for a Development Consultant to initiate a preliminary design and feasibility plan for the project.

In Williams Lake, housing developments have primarily been single family, large lot developments both inside and outside city boundaries. Of the total housing stock in Williams Lake 63% of the housing is owner-occupied while 37% is rented. The average house price in Williams Lake is $259,203, an increase from 2013.

Affordable housing is not only an issue for those who are not employed and are in receipt of government subsidies. While income assistance recipients find it nearly impossible to find rental housing that is within their shelter funds (maximum $375 for a single person and $570 for couples), many of those who are employed in the retail and service industries and in other low paid positions have problems finding affordable rents. Rental rates have generally increased since 2008 despite economic decline.

Expressions of Interest will be accepted until Dec. 15, 2014, and the City will be moving forward with a feasibility study in early 2015.

Community, business and Child Development Centre volunteers are gearing up for the 17th annual Yuletide Dinner and 9th annual Christmas Wish Breakfast.

“As in the past, we are extremely appreciative that the Ramada has kindly offered to host both of these events again this year at their convention centre,” says organizer Vanessa Riplinger in her letter of request for community help with the events.

The Yuletide Dinner takes place Tuesday, Dec. 9 between 4 and 7 p.m. The Christmas Wish Breakfast Buffet will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16 from 6 to

The dinner is provided free to families or individuals who are experiencing difficult times financially and might otherwise not experience a true holiday meal.

Admission to the breakfast is a way to provide toys for children in need this Christmas.

“The breakfast is a fantastic way for us to generate gifts for countless local families that cannot afford to buy gifts for their chil-

dren during the holidays,” Riplinger says.

“The cost of the breakfast buffet is either a cash donation or a new unwrapped child’s toy which can be brought at the time of event.

As the breakfast is a very popular event, with the Ramada’s Carmen’s Restaurant doing the catering, Riplinger asks that people contact the Ramada at 250-392-3321 to reserve their table.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at the Child Development Centre at 690 North Second Avenue, or made payable to the Child Development Centre.

In 2013, the Yuletide Dinner fed more than 475 people. This year that number is expected to escalate.

“In 2013, the CCCS Waste Wise program

converted 116 bags of leaf litter into compost and garden mulch, and we want to do even better this year,” van de Wijngaard says.

Cowboy Christmas part of busy weekend The Museum of the Cariboo Chicotin’s 10th annual Cowboy Christmas takes place Saturday, Nov. 22 in the Gibraltar Room.

The trade and craft fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring cowboy crafts and art such as paintings, blacksmithing, jewellery and more plus an open mic in the afternoon.

Tickets for the evening concert starting at 7 p.m. are $15 and available at the museum and at the door.

Lead entertainers include Alan Moberg with his cowboy, country and folk songs and Bruce Rolph with his poems based on everyday life in a rural setting.

New venue, more vendors for Medieval Market Christie Mayall Special to Tribune/Advisor In addition to more vendors than ever, the big news for the Medieval Market this weekend is its new venue.

After about 15 years at the Columneetza Campus the Medieval Market returns to its roots at the Williams Lake Campus of Lake City Secondary on Carson Drive.

This new venue provides more space for the vendors, multiple venues for music and interesting opportunities for street theatre.

This year we are adding a theatrical component to the market, with street theatre being performed by the Lake City Secondary School drama crew.

Town crier Harry Jennings from the Williams Lake Studio Theatre will open and close the market.

We are thrilled to let you know that there will be 89 vendors in 78 booths this year, the most vendors since the heydays of the market close to 20 years ago.

Along with 56 returning vendors, we are happy to welcome 33 new vendors to the market.

There will be local and visiting artisans, artists, and food producers selling paintings, books, leather work, photography, weaving, jewellery, pottery, bird houses, whimsical signs, metal work, wool products, hand made furniture, tarot card and rune readings, herbal and handmade body care products, chocolates, baking, organic vegetables and much, much more.

Live entertainment on two stages, a concession offering hearty soups, wraps, smokes and coffee, round out the event to make it a family friendly community gathering.

In the final firing the dragon fly image comes through as dark blue while the main piece reflects a light bluejean blue. “I’m working with the same recipies I started with, just changing the colour. I just lucked out,” Pemberton says. to create a lively atmosphere and bring people together.

The main stage in the Commons will feature Big Lake Symphony Orchestra, Oren Barter, Carmen and Dena, The Cariboo Men’s Choir, Youth Fiddlers, Ebony, Christine Constabel and Sherry Taylor, Jean Wellburn, The Williams Lake Community Band, Brandon Hoffman, Troy Forcier, and LCSS students Lauren, Harry, Jin, and Kevin.

The gym stage will enjoy music by the LCSS Chimes students, Jim Savage with his original mellow grooves on instrumental guitar, Angie Holdal on Chinese Harp, and a variety of student musicians who will perform either on stage or as wandering minstrels.

The Medieval Market is organized entirely by volunteers so all profits go to Lake City Secondary students.

Students working throughout the weekend earn money towards team sports, leadership, drama, music, and the science trip.

The recently established Emerging Artist Awards provide two bursaries, each for $750, for students in financial need who are pursuing a future in the arts.

Assistance is also provided for busing students to Scout Island Nature Centre and teacher volunteers earn money towards extracurricular programs of their choosing.

The musical and theatrical components of the market are generously supported this year

by the Cariboo Regional District and the City of Williams Lake through the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

So make a day of it. Come and peruse the market stalls, buy a few Christmas presents, enjoy a hearty lunch, have your fortune told, and listen to the talented entertainers.

Maybe you’ll even win one of the many door prizes donated by the vendors. Random tickets are marked as door prize winners.

If you receive one of these on your way in, you will be able to select one of the door prizes in the display case.

All of this for a $3 admission fee (kids under 12 free).

If you prefer to shop at a quieter time, we suggest coming on Sunday afternoon.

Ice Princess float adds sparkle to Santa Claus Parade Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer The annual Winter Light-Up and Santa Claus Parade will have a new twist this year with the addition of an Ice Princess Float.

“It will be fun,” says Cindy Chappell, the Winter Light-up event chair.

“Peterson Contracting has generously donated a flat deck and truck for the float.”

She says there will be room

on the Ice Princess Float for about 20 women and girls and she hopes to have representation from all of the local cultural groups.

Chappell says she was inspired to initiate the Ice Princess Float because of the overwhelming popularity of the movie Frozen.

To help out with the float she says Belles and Brides has some gowns to loan for little girls who might like to participate but may be unable to find a costume.

Chappell says Sasha Star has

also volunteered to make up ice princess participants with sparkling ice princess face paintings.

She says young and old alike will need to wear warm clothing under their ice princess costumes.

There will also be lots of bargains to be had during the Midday Madness downtown shopping hours of noon and 6 p.m.

Herbalist among Medieval Market vendors Herbalist Maggie Ranger will be among the many vendors participanting in the annual Medieval Market this weekend.

Her Earthdance Botanicals booth will feature the wildcrafted self-care products which she makes by hand.

“As a herbalist living in Horsefly there are so many wild medicinal plants to wild craft and work with,

I can harvest all the herbs I need right at my home,” Ranger says in the introduction to her new job with the Women’s Contact Society.

She gathers and grows a variety of herbs and plants that she makes into salves, facial cream, tinctures, aromatherapy bath salts and medicinal teas.

Ranger has spent the past few years

working to establish The Belles Lake Resort and Wellness Centre, which is an alternative and holistic centre located just outside of Horsefly.

The centre offers bed and breakfast, retreat cabins, teepee camping, a spa, workshops, music events, sweat lodge ceremonies, and an observatory where people can get a glimpse of the universe from a

dark rural setting on a clear night.

Ranger has worked with women in the community for 20 years and was recently hired as the new facilitator/outreach worker by the Women’s Contact Society in Williams Lake.

“Having worked in the Williams Lake area and surrounding communities for 18 years has been a great learning experi-

ence and I am excited and looking forward to working with this agency,” Ranger says of her recent appointment.

Help the Stampeders Stamp out Hunger

Shooters take aim at clay targets during an Annie Oakley shoot at a Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association Turkey Shoot on Sunday at the Bond Lake Road range. Participants competed from Williams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House.

Prizes awarded at annual turkey shoot Sunshine and moderate weather brought out a crowd of 38 shooters, young and old, novices, intermediate and expert competitors to the Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association for the annual fall Turkey Shoot.

They came from Quesnel, 100 Mile House and Lakes, and Williams Lake, proving that trap shooting isn’t just for the top shooters.

Prizes for the fun shoots, which involved nearly 30 shooters at a time, were awarded to Ernie Schmid, Adam Feeley and Barry Jenkins for the first Annie Oakley, and Adam Veley, Reid Williston and Peter Malic for the second Annie.

Tops in the popular Bushwhacker event were John MacDonald, Adam Veley and Ernie Schmid.

MacDonald also won the second Bushwhacker. A third novelty event, buddy shoots, brought prizes to Lori Williston and Brett Bradshaw, first, and Adam Veley and Barry Jenkins, second.

The Williams Lake Stampeders hope to deliver truck loads of food to the Salvation Army Food Bank this Christmas season.

Billed ‘Help the Stampeders Stamp Out Hunger,’ the program, in partnership with Heartland Toyota, is now in its second year following a successful inaugural debut.

“Any fan who brings two non-perishable food items to our Saturday, Nov. 22, game against Terrace will receive half price on their ticket at the gate,” Williams Lake Stampeders sponsorship and marketing director Calvin Dubray said. Also, anyone who delivers a bag of food items to Heartland Toyota leading up to the game versus the River Kings will receive a free game ticket.

Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Friday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 23 Midget House Tournament

The Williams Lake Minor Hockey Association hosts its annual Midget House Tournament at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. On top of five Williams Lake teams competing, teams will be travelling from Houston, McBride, Smithers, Prince George and Kamloops. Action gets underway Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. and wraps up Sunday morning with finals.

Additionally, Friday morning drop-in goes at 10 a.m.

Williams Lake chess sensation Kai Richardson finished fourth Nov. 7-9 in Richmond at the 47th Annual B.C. Junior Chess Championship.

Kai, 11, completed the tournament with three wins and two losses in a field of 84 players (18 of the top players in B.C. played in the championship division) in the under-20 class at the championships.

“In his last game on board one playing for the championship he was in an equal position making his older, more experienced, opponent nervous,” said Kai’s dad, Scott Richardson.

“Just going into the endgame after two hours of play he [Kai] brushed his bishop with his hand by mistake.”

His opponent, Langley’s John Doknjas, seized the opportunity and disrupted the game by seeking out the tournament director only to have the director ask them 3 5/16 x 5 to continue

McLellan and old friend Dos Santos to clash Greg Sabatino Staff Writer After a five-month hiatus, Williams Lake undefeated professional boxer Stuart McLel-

lan will step back into the ring this Friday, Nov. 21, in Calgary to take on an old friend — Vancouver’s Antonio Dos Santos.

Now completely

healed from a shoulder injury McLellan, 28, with a professional boxing record of 11 wins, no losses and three draws, said he’s eager to get his gloves back on to fight his former opponent and training partner in the 42-year-old Dos Santos.

“We fought back in 2007,” McLellan said.

“It was my second pro fight and I won a close decision.”

The duo kept in touch and also trained together for two weeks in 2009 at the former Astoria Boxing Club (now Action Boxing)

The bout will take place at the 154-pound light middleweight division in Calgary at the Chinese Cultural Centre.

McLellan, the current middleweight Eastern Canadian Champion and the Maritime Champion, said his opponent, who has two wins and eight losses as a pro, fights an unorthodox style.

“He’s tall and lanky, kind of like me, but he’s got a real awkward style,” McLellan said.

“I’m just going to take my time and box for the first few, but I’m looking for the knockout. He’s an old friend so it’ll be a little bit weird.”

Dos Santos, originally from Angola, South Africa, arrived in Van-

couver after escaping the war-torn country during its civil war by hopping on a navy ship as a stowaway. “He’s got quite an interesting story,” McLellan said.

Travelling with McLellan to be in his corner will be his dad, Gary McLellan, Chris Cousineau and Bryan Delaronde — all Williams Lake Boxing Club members.

McLellan added special thanks goes out to his employer, Woodtick Construction Ltd., for giving him time off for the fight.

“I’ve been training hard,” he said.

“I did some one on one training with [former Canadian Olympic boxer] Adam Trupish the past couple of months so looking to try some new things.”

Stamps continue to roll Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Williams Lake Stampeders scored 18 goals in two winning outings during the weekend to improve to a league-leading nine wins and no losses on its Central Interior Hockey League campaign.

On Saturday night, while election votes were being counted, Stampeders players did some tallying of their own in a 9-5 victory over their southern rivals, the Lac La Hache Tomahawks.

The following day Williams Lake skated circles around a slumping Kitimat Ice Demons squad with a 9-1 drubbing.

Brenner picked up the win for the Stampeders on Saturday in his second start of the season, while Andrew Fisher notched five points (23-5) to lead all scorers.

Nathan Zurak (2-13), Matt Lees (2-0-2), Chad Wilde (1-0-1), Dylan Richardson (10-1) and Jassi Sangha (1-1-2) also scored for the Stamps.

For Lac La Hache Willie Sellars faced 39 shots in the loss with Jordan Sellars (1-0-1), Wilfred Robbins (10-1), Francis Johnson (1-1-2), Brad Crump (1-0-1) and Drew Rose (1-0-1) tallying.

On Sunday versus the Ice Demons the Stampeders spread the scoring around as eight different players including Nathan (1-2-3),

Aaron Zurak (1-1-2), Lees (1-2-3), Stu Sasges (1-0-1), Richardson (12-3), Sangha (2-0-2), Cody Lockwood (1-12) and David Gore (10-1) lit the lamp, while Justin Foote picked up his sixth win of the season for the team.

Jordan Gonclaves notched the lone marker for the Ice Demons on a power play in the third period.

With the loss Kitimat slips to 1-6-1 on the season and is last in the CIHL’s west division.

The Tomahawks, meanwhile, have two wins and four losses and are six points back of the Quesnel Kanga-

roos — who also beat the Ice Demons Saturday, 6-2 — for second place in the east division.

Next up for the Stampeders is the west division’s first-place Terrace River Kings (51-0). Puck drop is Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Motoring Maui: the bliss and the bad

Lahaina, Maui - Locals call it the “Maui Merge.”

It’s enough to take a blissfully mellow tourist and perhaps get them as heated as their freshly acquired crimson sunburn.

It’s a merge that doesn’t take place within the lines

of an ending lane, as one would imagine. Somehow that merge extends onto the shoulder and beyond. Watch out for the cyclist and the stray dog!

It’s almost like a game, I’m told, to see how far ahead of all the other cars you can get.

As I observe this type of manouevre in action from a Ford

Escape rental vehicle, I can’t help but chuckle to myself. I guess some things stay the same no matter what kind of paradise you’re driving in.

But it’s not all bad, right?

Hawaii Route 30, also known as the Honoapi’ilani Highway, is a 56-kilometre stretch of road that you end up on when traveling to Lahaina or close to it. A “family” reunion just happened to be taking place on one of Hawaii’s eight islands, which gave me a perfect excuse to beat the fall blah’s and grey skies that this time of year blesses us with. I use family in bunny ears since my BFF since childhood, Nikki, and I have been sister-like since grade three. Her family is my family.

And vice versa.

And as families do, they try to figure out logistics and transportation; who will be going in whose car when it came to outings. A total of nine of us were vacationing together.

Luckily, my other sister, Minti lives on the island and had her Honda Odyssey to shuttle some adults, and her three daughters. Good thing. The Escape is roomy, though not that roomy. But when a chronic noise came from the

brakes, the minivan was out of commission. Luckily for only a few hours, chaos could have ensued.

It takes place at the appropriately named “Paradise Speedway Maui.” Here’s the website in case you’re as curious as I am (http://www. paradisespeedwaymaui.com) Regardless, I thanked him for his invite to the endof-season event but our schedule was packed to the brim. Lahaina was a quick commute (sometimes) from the Honua Kai resort where all of us gathered.

It was a breath of fresh air.

Not only because we got off the resort, but it borders along a picturesque coastline.

It’s the kind of coastline that postcards are made of: full of palm trees shimmying to the music of the wind.

There you encounter scooters buzzing by, happy couples hand-in-hand and many modes of transportation intermingling.

Front Street in Lahaina has a little bit of magic to it, too. In 2011, it was named by the American Planning Association as one of the “Great Streets.”

Not every street can be great.

They have guidelines.

The visit was all too short and then traffic met us on the other end. What happens when you want to escape the drawbacks of paradise driving and you’re stuck in in the back seat of a car?

Perhaps this is the answer.

Envision yourself on a beach, holding a (virgin) piña colada.

You’re lying on your towel with your eyes closed, let the crashing waves penetrate your ears. Then picture yourself driving your fastest lap at the Nürburgring.

Now that’s paradise.

Until the driver behind you honks and you get to crawl forward a metre or so.
