Rimbey 4-H Club

By Jenna Simpson The Rimbey 4-H club had their first meeting at the Blindman Youth Action Centre October 3, 2014 consisting of 21 members.

We are excited to be working on 3 projects with 4 new leaders. Our General Leader is Mariann Valstar, Assistant Leaders Teri Ormberg and Holly Waldron, Beef Leaders  Chris Simpson and Jason Valstar, Cooking Leader Michelle Service, and Crafts Leader Arlene Dean. We would like to thank our Leaders for volunteering their time and knowledge!

We elected new officers as well. President Megan Valstar, Vice-President Jordyn Valstar, Secretary Melissa Waldron, Treasurer Caitlin Buist, Assistant Treasurer Marlee Jaffray, Club Reporters Jenna Simpson and Steven Jaffray, Parliamentarian Kyle Valstar, Historian Mason Toussaint, Annie Service, Jack Service and District Council Gary Waldron and Steven Jaffray.

We had our beef weigh-in October 5, 2014 at Sekura Livestock Rimbey. Thank you for allowing us to use your scale and Thank you to Cindy Rose for coming to unlock the Auction Mart and help-

ing us run the scale. Thank you for your time! We saw lots of great looking calves. Let’s hope winter is kinder on us this year! Good luck Beef Members!

On October 18, Rimbey Feeds hosted a 4-H feeding workshop. Â Vince Gabert and Tyson Lybbert put together an awesome presentation for us. The 4-H Feeding Handbook will be very helpful! Thank You to Gary and Joanne Marek for hosting this presentation.

Our first Cooking class was on October 23, at Rimbey Jr/Sr High School in the foods kitchen. We are really looking forward to see what Michelle has in store for us!

Our first Crafts class was on October 18, at Crafts and Chat.

We met Arlene at our first meeting and it sounds like she has lots of fun things planned for us. At our first craft meeting we made necklaces that also can be bracelets.

Thanks Arlene it was fun!

Looking for roses in December It seems winter, with all its white on white chilly frosting, has arrived.

As usual, I’m not very seasonal and I found myself on the day of the first great, white snowstorm trying desperately to pull a snow shovel out of the shed where it was lodged somewhere behind the lawnmower.

“You’re not very well prepared,” someone said jokingly. I was prepared to be all ofTreena Mielke fended, except he was On The Other Side at the other end of the snow shovel when he said it.

Was it really only a week or two ago my son and I had winterized the back yard, storing hoses, cleaning out flowerbeds and stacking lawn chairs?

I was so proud. Now I can’t even find my snow shovel. Ice scrapers? Mitts? Boots? Where is all that stuff?

But, prepared or not, winter is here. And, no doubt, as usual it will be cold, harsh, unforgiving and last for a very long time.

Really it just goes from bad to worse.

But, still there is, even in the deepest, darkest of winter those moments that just seem so awesome; sort of like coming in from the cold to a room with a fireplace that crackles and snaps and emits heat of some sort.

Also, wrapping your fingers around a mug filled with something very hot like coffee or hot chocolate or even better, some kind of alcoholic beverage that is guaranteed to warm your insides.

Anyway, those are moments that are kind of like roses in December, except of course they may be buried under the snow, and you have to really look for them.

This year, I have already had a few such moments to warm me up.

For instance, I attended the Remembrance Day Service in Red Deer, which was outside. It seemed ridiculous for such a warm weather person as myself to even think about attending, but I did.

And, there I was freezing, snapping pictures and, weirdly enough, feeling all warm and happy.

I’m sure it had to do with all the people who were walking up to my brother, who is a Korean War vet and shaking his hand and saying “thank you.”

It was incredible, really, and it goes to show you that a person can feel proud, humble and slightly surprised all at once.

That was me, not my brother, whose smile was brighter than all his medals, so I’m guessing he

was more than pleased with all the attention.

And then there was the baptism of my youngest grandson, Jacob.

When his mom handed the child, dressed in his little white christening outfit, to me after the event, I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, I would have braved 100 snowstorms just to be there. As it was, there was only one, and as I was driving through it, I kept muttering to myself “I’ve driven in worse than this,” which I have, but, for some reason, that thought didn’t seem all that comforting.

Anyway, its only just November and we have a long, long way to go before the time changes and the sun is, once again, benevolent and the grass grows green and people sit on their decks and are all happy just because.

So, until that time, its best to find those moments, whatever they be, that keep you warm and happy, even when the thermometer goes a little crazy and registers some off the wall number that is far too cold to even write about.

Homelessness in Canada national crisis Troy Media Homelessness in Canada remains a national crisis despite the best efforts of social groups, housing advocates and all levels of government. In the 2014 State of Homelessness in Canada Report Card released recently, the most startling number remains that on any given night 35,000 Canadians have no place to call home.

Even more damning is that throughout the year an estimated 235,000 different individuals will experience the harshness of having no housing. Among industrialized nations, Forbes ranks Canada among the top 20 richest nations, yet we have failed to tackle homelessness in Canada despite years of sustained effort.

The mid-1990s were less than kind to Canadian cities. The economy was stagnant and the federal government shifted its policies on social housing, transferring responsibility from the federal government to the provinces. This period was marked by a significant shortfall in building affordable housing across the country and a lack of supports within a healthcare system that was already maxed out. A flashpoint was in 1999, when images of Tent City, an encampment of homeless persons in Toronto, thrust Canada into the limelight for the entire world to see that we could not house people in one of our most prosperous cities.

In reactionary fashion, the Federal government

stepped in amidst an international shaming and growing pubic fervour that something had to be done. The outcome was the establishment of a large-scale intervention big enough to have an immediate impact.

Seeded with $750 million, a national program was launched in Canada's largest cities. While the funding was not enough, the wheels were set in motion to help address the needs of our most vulnerable citizens.

Over the next 15 years the emphasis shifted from building homeless shelters to include a much broader focus in areas such as labour reintegration, supportive housing and acknowledging that our mental healthcare system has failed to address the complex needs of a large number of persons.

Today, the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS) is Canada's main source of federal policy with funds directed toward ending homelessness. HPS funds are deployed to cities via local community entities that are responsible for the implementation and distribution of dollars. This has created an important delivery mechanism by which federal monies are able to flow to local jurisdictions without much complexity. In its most current iteration, the HPS has taken the lead by promoting "Housing First" which is an intervention aimed at ending homelessness by providing specialized supports along with housing.

Housing First has been proven to be highly effective in ending homelessness for persons with mental health issues.

The 2014 Report Card notes the impact of home-

lessness to the Canadian economy is upwards of $7 billion annually, with a substantive portion attributed to the over consumption of services and supports related to mental health and social services. This includes the overuse of hospital and primary care centres, the deployment of police, as well as other areas of our social safety net that could be better used if more people had decent housing and the supports necessary to succeed.

What is needed now is the momentum to deal with homelessness in a more comprehensive manner. Solutions must come from the community, such as the Task Force to End Homelessness in Winnipeg which has penned a plan, to the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness's bold announcementof launching the "20,000 Homes Campaign" with the objective to house 20,000 of Canada's most vulnerable by 2018.

All levels of government and the private sector must begin to see the tremendous social and economic benefits of doing the right thing. Canada can end homelessness and our elected officials have a duty to work together on funding community based solutions.

Make a Wish Foundation donors helping a very worthwhile organization

By Treena Mielke Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the people of Rimbey, many youngsters with life threatening illnesses are being given an opportunity to make a wish and see it become a reality.

Michawn Giesbrecht wants to thank the community for their support of the Make A Wish Foundation of Northern Alberta.

“It touches so many lives and it makes us aware of how many good people there are in this world,” she said. “People have been so supportive.

It’s amazing.”

Giesbrecht’s own life was per-

sonally touched by the Foundation in 2008 when her 18-year-old son Shane, who had a congenital heart defect, was given a trip to Mexico.

After her son passed away, Giesbrech decided to keep the Foundation boxes going in Rimbey.

She noted the doctors at Rimbey Eye Care match whatever is collected at that business. Other businesses that have the Make A Wish donation boxes are Side Street Liquor Store, Rimbey Liquor Store and Kansas Ridge Clothing.

About $1,000 to $1,500 is donated to the Make A Wish Foundation of Northern Alberta each year.

Local 25-year-old man charged with drug trafficking again Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 57 files this week. Highlights include a major drug bust, poaching, thefts, mischief, domestic disputes and other serious matters.

Drug charges laid Mounties in Rimbey, in their continued effort to crack down on local drug dealers, executed a search warrant at a property in Rimbey located in very close proximity to a school. Rimbey officers called in members from all neighbouring detachments and a Police Dog to assist with the bust. Acting under the authority of a search warrant following a lengthy investigation, police raided the property after midnight on Friday, November 7.

Police seized methamphetamine, cocaine, marihuana, magic mushrooms and illegal pills. Illegal weapons were also seized, including brass knuckles, a high powered rifle, two semi automatic carbine assault rifles (Soviet military type machine guns) and a large amount of ammunition. In total, 4 persons were arrested at the scene and taken to jail and others questioned and released. Dustin McLaughlin, a 25-year-old man from Rimbey, has been charged with nearly 20 criminal charges in this case, including

drug trafficking. McLaughlin, who is very well known to police, has been charged with drug trafficking in Rimbey on previous occasions.

McLaughlin remains in jail until his next court appearance on December 5th in Rimbey where he will stand before the Judge.

Deer and rifle seized A Mountie patrolling near Leedale stopped a truck with three local men headed for home only a mere mile from their destination. The so called “hunters” were found to have a mule deer buck they had shot in the back of the truck with no tag on it. Also, they had not taken the time to gut the animal and gave a story of how they shot it “way out west by Oras Road”. What they didn’t realize is that the officer who stopped them had been photographing this buck in the summer where it had been seen often in the field just over the hill from where the bandits were stopped. Sure enough, when the officer checked the field in the daylight the following day, a fresh kill site was found where a mule deer had been shot and loaded in a truck but not field dressed on private land. In this case, the deer and rifle were seized by police.

Multiple charges are pending as the investigation continues in this case

including hunting without a license, trespassing, misleading a police officer, and firearms offences. In total, police seized four hunting rifles and laid numerous charges for hunting and firearm offences in the Leedale and Gimlet area.

Domestic assault On November 14, a local man was arrested for assaulting his common-law spouse during an argument where he even went so far as to throw her out of her own house. Police quickly obtained a warrant and arrested the highly intoxicated 37-year-old accused in the residence without further incident. The man was transported to jail and held in custody facing numerous criminal charges.

D-Day happens, June 6, 1944 and the war continues to rage

By Treena Mielke This is part two of a two part series about Michael Jarmoluk, a longtime Rimbey resident, who was born in Poland, spent almost two years in a Siberian work camp and later served in the Second World War. After arriving in England in 1942 Jarmoluk was placed in the ranks of the Second British Army under General Montgom-

ery and assigned the First Polish Armored Division under Commanding General Maczek.

The language barrier proved to be a problem for Poles who could speak no English, but one that could be overcome and people were friendly and helpful.

Training continued in Scotland until 1943 when the armory division Jarmoluk was with moved to southeast England.

Although physically Jarmoluk was far from his homeland, his thoughts and those of his comrades remained in Poland.

Jarmoluk, who had received extra ranks and special recognition with the Battle Cross, stayed in Germany’s British zone with occupation forces for over two years, eventually joining the military police.

The occupation forces were gradually reduced and Jarmoluk moved to London, where he enlisted in a photographic course.

“I found it quite interesting and I stuck with it, hoping that it would sometime come useful in life.”

While living in London, he heard from his brother Leon who had come to Canada as part of a Canadian government program.

A prominent Rimbey businessman, O. B. Moore had applied for a soldier through the program.

“That soldier happened by my brother Leon,” he said.

Leon encouraged Michael to join him in Canada and before long he decided to follow up on the offer.

He arrived in Lacombe on Nov. 5, 1949. It was a warm day and there was no snow.

“It was short sleeve weather,” he said.

When they arrived in Rimbey, Jarmoluk wanted to notify the police of his arrival but was assured it wasn’t necessary.

“I was here, I was free,” he said. “I was very happy.”

happy ending to a long and turbulent journey. He married, raised three children and successfully operated Michael’s Studio for 42 years.

It’s been a good life, he said.

“I lost my home and country and was separated from my family. But here

I have found wonderful people who accepted me as one of their own.

“Rimbey has been good to me through my years in business and raising a family, and I continue to enjoy friendships with many wonderful people. I am very proud of my Polish heritage, and I

A strategy to improve Rimbey’s business sector is a powerful tool, but business owners need to work with council to ensure its success, says a Rimbey town councillor.

“We need to have businesses buy into it and come on board with us,” said Coun. Matt Jaycox.

The councillor is in favour of the plan which he sees as picking up steam as businesses work together.

“We need businesses to show other businesses the benefits,” he said.

Jaycox said the strategies are part of a five-year plan to encourage growth in Rimbey, but the ideas presented can be kept into play indefinitely.

A controversial tax incentive which was in place a few years ago in Rimbey was proven to be illegal, but Jaycox said that should not be a deterrent to commercial

growth in the community as there is potential here for businesses to be successful.

Now that the bylaw is approved, council can start advertising for interested people to join the committee, said CAO Lucien Cloutier.

“This bylaw gives council a great deal of latitude in appointing members to the committee,” said CAO Lucien Cloutier. “While guidance is provided for the composition of the committee, there isn’t a specific number of appointees allocated for various stakeholders. This is intentional to provide council with the greatest degree of flexibility in appointing members.”

Forming the committee is the first of several suggestions presented in Rimbey Business Sector Sustainability Strategy which was also approved by council at its meeting.

During the service, Const. Tyler Hagel, president of Rimbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion gave a short address in which he spoke about dreams and images.

“Everybody has dream,’ he said, “but all we have for war is images.”

He talked about images of the trenches, the mud and the poppy and the soldier leaning over the top of the trenches to fire his rifle at the enemy.

Bentley School holds its annual Remembrance Day Service

By June Norvila This year the annual approximately hour long Bentley School Remembrance Day performance, which is always open to the public, was staged on November 6.

Although the crowd was smaller than usual, the event was as reverent as ever.

Red Deer piper Murdoch Cameron led the color parade at the Bentley school Remembrance Day service.

A lone piper, Murdoch Cameron from Red Deer, led the march in instead of the usual members of the Red Deer Royal Canadian Legion Pipe & Drum band that have been attending for years.

It was a little disappointing for director Marla Kolybaba but she said she was thankful for the piper.

The color party was also smaller but still included a few members of the Lacombe Royal Canadian Legion Branch #79 and some ladies from the Legion Auxiliary who have helped out by attending for so many years. As the number of Legionnaires continues to decrease, it is harder for them to fulfill their commitments to help in so many locations.

The RCMP was represented this year by Corporal Hallwin, dressed in full red serge from the Sylvan Lake detachment. Bentley Mayor Lynda Haarstad-Petten, the Bentley District Fire Department / school assistant principal Stephen Lush, members from the Bentley Sparks, Brownies, and Guides and leaders, and some Beavers and a Cub who attend Bentley school and a leader made up the rest of the procession.

Some Bentley Care Center residents were in attendance along with the gymnasium full of students, staff, and community members.

The singing of “Oh, Canada” was led by Ava Brown who is in grade two.

“In Flanders Fields” was read by Finn Haarstad and Wellington Sheppard also from grade two.

Kelsey Vig from grade 8 led the “Lord’s Prayer”.

The Bentley school handbell team from the Junior High Fine Arts Option played “It’s A Small World”.

Vivien Schunk, Christianna Alapo and Chris McLaren sang “We Need Each Other”.

June Norvila Photos Ashley Cumming from grade 11 gave a talk called Reflections that was based on the story of her great uncle and how he survived the Great War and was able to come home. It is documented in a family history book.

This year the traditional laying of the wreaths included mostly hand made wreaths and the grade two’s and three’s had each made their own wreaths for a special display area of their own.

Grade 5 student Kesaly VonKuster led the closing “God Save the Queen” before the piper led out the color party.

It was another great time of reflection involving the entire elementary school and the public and was another admirable production under the direction of fine arts teacher Marla Kolybaba who said each year is a challenge but she is happy to be able to do it.

For you, what comes next might involve working in a different occupation, dedicating more time to charity work or becoming a coach. Taking the time for this introspection early in the sale process greatly increases your odds of successfully getting to the closing table.

3. Be armed with the facts. It is natural that, as a business owner, you value your business higher than most buyers. You have spent years of blood, sweat and tears building your company and know it inside and out. Unfortunately, buyers don’t have that same level of understanding or legacy. Before buyers begin to ask questions, perform your own pre-sale due diligence on your business. View your business through the eyes of a potential buyer to identify impending issues and arm yourself with detailed facts about the business. Sellers who can answer detailed questions with facts and data (as opposed to opinion and anecdote) instill confidence in buyers and make the due diligence process easier.

4. Minimize surprises. Surprises are fun for birthdays but not when selling a business. When dealing with a potential buyer, it is human nature to want to avoid discussing a negative issue such as a troubled customer relationship. Especially for proud business owners who feel confident the relationship issues can be resolved. Buyers may not have that same confidence without the years of history with that customer. Instead, identify potential negative issues during your pre-sale diligence, and disclose them immediately while you still have negotiating power. Once you sign the letter of intent, a negative surprise in due diligence could result in a reduced purchase price or a failed deal.

5. Don’t take it personally. Due diligence is the most personal thing you will do in business, and it’s critical you don’t take it personally. Buyers routinely perform due diligence to confirm what you have told them and to find potential reasons to reduce the purchase price. This is standard business practice. Buyers question everything about the business and want facts to support the answers you have provided. You might feel like you are being attacked and a buyer is criticizing your business. By having a vision for your life after you sell, and by being prepared to answer the difficult questions, you can keep your emotions in check and get to the closing table.

Ella is survived by her children, Carole Cech (Frank) of Bluffton, Alberta, Don Sutherland (Marie) of Princeton, British Columbia, Allen Sutherland (Cheryl) of Bluffton, Jim Sutherland (Mary Anne) of Calgary, Kathleen Smith (Rick) of Port Alberni, British Columbia. Ella also leaves to mourn six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Ella’s life was held from the Rimbey United Church on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Interment of Ella’s cremated remains will take place in the Iola Fairview Cemetery at a later date.
