Advance polls busy If the advance polls are any indication, interest in this year’s municipal election is higher than usual in Victoria.

The first two advance polls on Nov. 6 and Nov. 10 attracted 2,600 voters – nearly double the amount of advance voters in the last election. There were three advance polls in Victoria this year, compared to two in 2011.

Numbers from Wednesday’s advancepoll are not included in the total yet, meaning the true number of advance voters is even higher.

There will be a lot of door knocking before this weekend.

Mayoral candidates in Victoria and Esquimalt will be doing everything they can to get their names out there and connect with voters before the results are in on Saturday night.

“It’s not over yet,” said Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. “We’re still out there trying to engage everybody in any way possible.”

Desjardins said for her, going door to door and talking to residents has been an effective tool.

“The residents of Esquimalt have been willing to open their doors; they’re certainly engaged, they’re asking questions.”

Besides knocking on doors, Desjardins said she has also been using Facebook as a way to generate conversations, and also meeting and greeting people in public places.

“People are very happy to come up to you and give you their thoughts,” she said.

Esquimalt mayoral candidate Scott Attrill said he has been going out door knocking as well, every night after work. Although he said he already knows many of the people through his barber shop, Floyd’s Hairstyling.

“It’s just a matter of letting them know that Scott Attrill is Floyd,” he said.

Attrill added he is running for mayor because of certain issues in the township. “If you want a true representation of your concerns, then you need to vote,” he said.

Esquimalt mayoral candidate John Ducker said he has been trying to reach as many people as he can through canvasing door-to-door as well as newspaper and radio ads. He said meeting residents in person has been crucial.

“The more you can come into contact with people directly, the better it is,” said Ducker. “I’m sensing

strongly in the community that people want a different perspective in their municipal councils.”

In Victoria, the mayoral candidates are also working hard on the last day before the election.

“We’re out knocking on every door, we’re making phone calls, we are out talking to people on the street,” said Mayor Dean Fortin. “It gives an opportunity for people to know who you are. It’s about understanding the values behind the person you’re voting for.”

Victoria mayoral candidate Stephen Andrew is also continuing to campaign up until the end of the election.

“We’re definitely calling people, continuing to have meetings with groups, standing on the side of the road with signs and creating awareness,” said Andrew.

He said knocking on doors has been an effective way of connecting with people.

“I cannot walk down the street now without someone coming up and wishing me well,” said Andrew. “You really see, when you get involved in this process, how much difference you can make in people’s lives.”

Victoria mayoral candidate Ida Chong said she will not rest until she has gotten the chance to speak with as many people as she can.

“All you can do is let people know a little more about you,” said Chong.

“When it comes to local politics, it is really about people connecting much much more than at the provincial or federal level.”

Chong said it is important to get out to vote and consider who would be best for the job.

“If you do want a change in leadership … then I would ask [voters] to cast their eyes on all the candidates, and who would be the one most [capable] for the position.”

Victoria mayoral candidate Lisa Helps said she has been door knocking since July, and continues to do so along with making phone calls and handing out flyers. She said most important for her is connecting oneon-one with people.

“Really it is building a relationship with as many people as possible that can get to know me,” said Helps.

“Word of mouth is key.”

There will be one dominant name missing on the ballot Saturday, when Esquimalt residents head to the polls to elect a new township council and mayor.

Dave Hodgins, who was first elected to council in 2011, is the only member of the current council not seeking re-election.

“I was waiting to see who might step up,” said Hodgins, 65.

“There are some very good candidates.”

When Hodgins ran for council three years ago, he wasn’t bargaining on one term, or three, or

four, he was just taking it as it comes.

He said he isn’t quite finished with politics yet. Two political parties (he wouldn’t say which ones) are wooing him to run in the next federal election.

“We did a lot of good work in supporting art and culture. That really helped a lot in terms of the impression people have about Esquimalt, he said.

Coun. Tim Morrison said Hodgins is a “toptier” councillor and will be missed around the council table.

“He was always diplomatic and always open to other opinions.”

For Hodgins, it was just about doing the right thing.

The common ringlet is one of the butterfly species that is in drastic decline in Greater Victoria Victoria Nature Guide, local butterfly specialist James Miskelly estimated that only 30 to 35 species can still be found. Unfortunately, that means about 50 per cent of butterfly species have likely been lost in the Capital Region.

Butterflies are one of the most beautiful and fascinating creatures on earth and one of the intangibles that make our world such a wonderful place to live. For that alone, they should be saved, but the bigger picture is that they are an

integral part of the fabric of nature.

Most people forget that nature supplies us with essentials such as the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and medicines that cure our diseases.

Saving butterflies is tantamount to saving nature, and in many cases, that is as simple as preserving natural habitats and sensitive ecosystems. What’s good for butterflies is also good for humans.

Three of the endangered species that still exist in Greater Victoria are the

propertius duskywing, the common ringlet, and the Western branded skipper. The propertius duskywing relies on Garry oaks as its main host plant and is only found around Garry oak meadows; the common ringlet survives mainly in grassland habitats like Rithet’s Bog, Viaduct Flats and Island View Beach; and the Western branded skipper requires specific grassland habitat like Cordova Spit. Whether these species survive will depend a lot on the human commitment to

At one time, southern Vancouver Island was a mecca for butterflies and attracted scientists and collectors from all over North America.

The expansive Garry oak meadows and rolling grasslands were perfect butterfly habitats, and in 1884, prominent lepidopterist George Taylor noted that 40 species were considered abundant.

Unfortunately, after a century of urbanization and human activity, many species have been extirpated, most existing populations are in decline and several species are endangered.

Butterfly survival is precarious at the best of times. It is a challenge just to survive natural obstacles like extreme weather, parasites and predators. Those that make it must then face a gauntlet of humanrelated hazards like habitat destruction, pesticide spraying and invasive plants and predators.

The toll on butterflies in the Victoria region has been significant. The distribution maps in Butterflies of British Columbia indicate that 61 species have been historically recorded in the region. In the recently published

Voters face daunting task Voters have good reason to make their way to polling stations on Saturday to elect mayors, councillors and school trustees.

Proposed housing and commercial developments, transportation pressures, recreational needs, children’s education and policing are among the local issues. They affect people directly and often personally.

Yet if past behaviour is any guide most residents of Victoria and Esquimalt will ignore this opportunity to influence what happens in their community.

In the 2011 civic election just 26 per cent of eligible voters in Victoria cast ballots. In Esquimalt about 18 per cent voted.

Part of the reason for this feeble display of citizenship surely lies with the task facing anyone who tries to exercise the franchise.

Voters must choose from daunting lists of candidates, most of whom they’ve never heard of. They fall back on voting purely name recognition. In Victoria there are 24 candidates vying for eight seats and 12 for six seats in Esquimalt. And those don’t even include the mayor’s contests.

Trying to inform oneself of where each candidate stands seem nearly impossible – but it’s a duty we must do by scanning media reports, connecting with the candidates’ web pages and meeting them, if possible, face to face.

The choices we make are crucial to our future and our neighbours as the debate continues on the regional sewage plan and municipal amalgamation We trust that citizens throughout the region will turn out in numbers that do credit to our civic process and honour the efforts of all the candidates in the often gruelling campaigns.

B.C. should step in and lead It is encouraging that movement to improve government in the Capital Region is underway.

Citizens are interested in better local and regional government in spite of Colwood’s refusal to recognize this. Meanwhile the province appears not to take an interest in good government in the region. It says to the municipalities, ‘it is up to you to arrange things for yourselves.’

What if these arrangements are not working and getting worse?

Tax dollars flow to local government from the province.

Would the province not want to have those dollars used as efficiently as possible? Would the province not be interested in promoting good governance at the local level? It seems not.

Problems have been mounting and no action taken. The sewage debacle is only the latest example of dysfunctional government.

In jurisdictions elsewhere in Canada, senior governments have taken the lead in promoting change through intense local consultation. The process is collaborative but the senior government takes the lead.

The province should examine the problems of government in the region and propose options -in consultation with citizens -- for improvement. These would then be the subject of a referendum to be held in the short term.

You could say there is a crisis in

local government and steps should be taken now to deal with it, not in four or eight years. The province must offer the leadership that many in the region are asking for.

Municipalities need leadership and support from senior government.

Leave tweeting to the birds The embarrassing faux pas that Green Party leader Elizabeth May committed recently while tweeting about the Jian Ghomeshi scandal at the CBC provides another example why I will have nothing to do with tweets or twitters.

I think all tweeting and twittering should be left to the birds, who are clearly the experts in this area.

Indeed, I have been listening to birds for more than 70 years now and I have never once heard a bird say anything stupid while tweeting or twittering.

By contrast, many humans don’t seem to be able to tweet or twitter for more than a few minutes without making some dumb remark.

I attribute the birds’ incomparably superior abilities in this regard mainly to the fact that they have had so much experience honing their tweeting and twittering skills over the millennia.

Fletcher out to lunch on climate change Re: Hot gases spew from legislature (B.C. Views, Nov. 5) I beg to differ with Tom Fletcher.

There is no “climate debate” and the “jury” is not “still out” on whether climate change is actually occurring.

The vast preponderance of scientific studies on the subject support the premise that the earth is heating up quickly due to anthropogenic causes. To suggest that only those who are “left thinking” accept that climate change is real, is ridiculous.

I would suggest it is thinking people, rather than “left thinking people” who have read the studies, listened to the experts and come to the inescapable conclusion that climate change is real and it is happening now.

What exactly will it take to convince you Mr. Fletcher?

How long must we wait before our political and business leaders (and some journalists) take climate change seriously and start taking strong measures to reduce our carbon output?

There are still some people who believe the earth is flat.

They are wrong, just as those who deny climate change are wrong.

The sound from the screaming engine, the Pirelli P-Zero tires squealing under acceleration or diving into each corner was a sensory overload. After dozens of laps around the track with a top speed of 230km/h down the straight, this car is nothing short of amazing. Everything else just feels slow.

Verdict The average buyer will still opt for the ($32,495) V6equipped cars sold with a solid 300 hp going to the rear wheels or all wheels, the V8-equipped cars are not offered with AWD any longer. The most amazing, but unspectacular part of the trip was driving the Hellcat back to Washington, D.C. through heavy traffic on the highway and downtown core.

Unlike the halogen bulb, the HID bulb does not have a filament, because there is no filament the bulbs are not susceptible to vehicle vibration damaged. There are however effected by and fluctuations in the vehicles electrical system and depending on the vehicle they may require some resistors.

With the nights getting longer and the dark grey days ahead, anybody venturing out to do a little four wheeling will tell you good off-road lighting is a must.

Make sure you only operate them off-road. Good quality wiring of a set of off-road lights is important when installing them on your truck, SUV or 4x4.

Simply running a power and ground may work but is not the correct way to wire them. Most off-road lights draw a lot of power when switching them on, and this load should never be applied directly to the switch. Using a relay for the switching duties will save your switch and lights as well as make for a safer installation.

Relays are easy to install and some lights come with them, but if not, you can pick up a relay from your local auto parts store. Install a switch in the cab of your truck in a location that is , convenient for you to reach, or tap into the high-beam circuit of the headlights to power the relay. Mount the relay inside the cab, under the dash or other location out of the way and out of the elements.

Run a wire from the battery , other positive source or to the switch. This is the positive feed to switch the relay on. You will also need to run a ground wire to the switch from the frame or

other ground then run a positive feed wire from the battery to the positive in position on the relay.

There will be four connectors on the relay, a positive, a negative, a positive out and a positive in from the battery. Read the packaging or directions to determine which is which.

Find the ground position on the relay and run a wire from it to a good ground on the chassis of the vehicle.

Anywhere on the frame or other metal structure of the vehicle will normally produce a decent ground.

Run a section of wire from the switch output to the switched power input on the relay. Again, this will be marked or identified on the directions that came with your relay. Run the last wire from the relay positive out position to the lights and connect it to the positive feed on the lights. Ground the lights by attaching the black or ground wire to the frame or other ground on the truck.

HID lights have become more popular with off-roaders these days. Installation is a little more work. But the principles remain the same. Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the kit. HID stands for High intensity discharge which

‘Music saint’ is celebrated at Christ Church Cathedral

Linden Singers mark 35 years

Christ Church Cathedral celebrates music’s patron saint with an all-day open house featuring an array of Victoria performers filling the air with music on Nov. 22.

The day will appeal to all lovers of music.

The uplifting cathedral bells herald the start of the St. Cecilia Day open house at 9:30 a.m..

Under the vaulted roof indoors, choral music opens and closes the day.

Music director Michael Gormley leads the Cathedral Choir in an open rehearsal, giving a rare “backstage view” of preparations for the Cathedral’s much anticipated Advent Carol service. St. Christopher Singers choral evensong brings St. Cecilia’s Day to an inspirational conclusion.

Audiences will be entertained throughout the day by organ and piano solos (including Erik Lin who featured in last August’s Symphony Splash!), and ensembles ranging from medieval/ renaissance wind band, barbershop quartet, accordions, acoustic guitar and voice, and even an English country dance band.

The Linden Singers of Victoria marks its 35th anniversary this year with its annual Wassail concert.

The concert is Dec. 7 at First Metropolitan United Church, 932 Balmoral Rd., beginning at 7 p.m.

Danica’s lunch merely arrived in a paper bag and she might be feeling left out. I was horrified in the way that only first-time parents can understand. I couldn’t bear the sufLundy fering my child had silently endured.

Judging by the stories that have circulated the news in the past year or so, creating school lunches has become trickier than ever. I’m sure every lunchbox-packing parent shuddered at the story of the mom who was threatened with a fine in Winnipeg because she failed to include a “grain” in her child’s balanced lunch. That lunch apparently did include roast beef, potatoes, carrots and an orange. Then there was the British primary school student sent home after teachers discovered a bag of Mini Cheddars in his lunch, a violation of the school’s health and balanced meal policy.

Although I worked hard to create lunchbox masterpieces, I’m glad there were no lunch police back then. I didn’t need any-

one else hovering around taking notes. The food had to be healthy; it had to be something they would eat and – the biggie – it had to be available in either the fridge or cupboards.

The more empty the fridge, the more “creative” the lunches.

Some mornings, the father of my children scoffed at my lunchbox anguish, breezily claiming he could easily throw together a mere lunch or two. I smiled kindly, continued making the meal and hoped to God that I never died and left him in charge of our children’s lunches. In those days, I worked late most Monday nights, leaving him to make dinner. Danica and Sierra did not always appreciate his “gourmet” touch. Once, when he had created some sort of odd, raisin, pasta and pickle juice dish, he set a plate down in front of each child. Five-year-old Danica’s eyes widened in disbelief as she observed her dinner.

“This,” she said, outraged, “is bullshit!” It’s tough to chide a child for language when you’re suppressing laughter. When I got home and observed the food, I had to agree with her sentiment.

However, I guess I should have given him some slack. Just because the provision of food is “primal,” doesn’t mean it’s going to be good.

Karen Kobayashi, sociology professor at the University of Victoria, strikes a careful balance between teaching, and family time with husband, Cary Hayashi, and their son, eight-year-old Kaelan.

How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

A

I have a wonderful group of close friends both on campus colleagues and off-campus “parent” friends, who I actively seek to spend time with throughout the week. Given our busy lives, we oftentimes find ourselves combining social time with physical activity. For example, I regularly meet a group of female colleagues for runs during the week.

What are you reading right now? What about with your son?

A

I am wading through a stack of peer-reviewed journal articles on “emergent family formations” and “the timing of the transition to parenthood” in preparation for the revision and submission of two manuscripts. With my ever-curious third-grader, we are currently reading “fun stuff” like books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series with a recent smattering of historical books on World War I.

What is your favourite family activity to share together?

A

Sitting down to share a meal with people we love. On weekends, we mine the Internet for interesting (and colourful) recipes, shop or forage for the necessary ingredients, and then “go wild” in the kitchen. Everyone has a role to play from prep chef to head chef to pastry/dessert chef.

The part of your day you look forward to the most?

A

My son’s hockey, soccer, and kendo practices often prevent us from sitting down to an evening meal together during the week.

Our family pre-bedtime ritual is “catch up” time. We do homework, have a snack, and talk about the events of our day before getting ready for a bath and bed. It is the perfect time to reconnect with each other after a busy day.

As I attempted to send my daughter back to her tiny rental suite in Vancouver laden with Thanksgiving leftovers, I realized how the “provision of food” is such a primal part of parenting.

The offer was gently rebuffed: “I don’t have enough arms to carry another bag!” (I handed it to her friend). Luckily, I’d dropped off a massive bin full of supSusan plies a few days earlier, so I wasn’t concerned (yet) that she would starve.

It’s primal and it’s inherited; I remember leaving my parents’ home topped up with leftovers and bits of random groceries. In fact my mom rarely visits today without bringing a container of home-baked cookies or a bag of coffee that she “just won’t use.”

Sending my adult kids off with a few groceries is so much easier than all those years of packing school lunches. My lunch-making angst began early, all the way back to the daycare years. For months, I’d blithely gone about the morning routine of packing diaper bag, snack and lunch. I had no inkling I might be causing permanent damage to the psyche of my firstborn until the caregiver finally took me aside.

Dad and Mom are weary of the upkeep of their home, gardens and the day to day responsibilities. It also interferes with volunteering, which they love to do and have always done, no matter where they have lived. How will the retirement community (RC) lifestyle affect their volunteer connections?

A:

Great Question! Why would they stop volunteering? They would have more time now to spend on their passions. The beauty of living in an RC is it frees you up to do all the things you simply haven’t had time to do or were too tired to do. Some residents move to an RC for the basic services of security, meals, cleaning and laundry, allowing them time to stay ‘connected’ to their outside community; some residents move in to an RC to become ‘connected’ to the community; and some enjoy maintaining both their outside and new inside ‘connections’.

Volunteer opportunities are certainly available and welcomed within the RC. Evidence suggests when seniors volunteer, it can reduce rates of cognitive decline and dementia; there are significant reductions in symptoms of depression and, they live longer. When we focus on helping others we focus less on worrying about ourselves.

November is often the time of year when students start to struggle: the novelty of the new year has worn off and the countdown to winter holidays has begun.

If midterm results and teacher feedback show students have challenges in certain subjects, it can be a good time to think about engaging a tutor. And this year in particular, with an accelerated schedule to make up for time lost to the teachers’ strike, some kids are in greater danger of falling behind.

“There definitely is a crunch going on this year, especially with the high school students,” says Mike Lander, director of Sylvan Learning’s West Shore centre.

“There’s a lot of need for extra tutoring sessions throughout the schools.”

Three groups of students can benefit from tutoring, he says.

Those who are behind, those who are doing well and want to maintain that level, and the “get ahead” students who may not be getting the challenges they need from regular classroom hours.

With students who are struggling, it’s important to remember they may need to go back to earlier foundations to rectify a current gap in their learning. “A student may be struggling with Grade 6 math, for example, and they may need to go back to Grade 4 concepts,” Lander says.

Whether parents decide to use a centre like Sylvan or go with a private tutor, he says, it’s imperative parents know who’s going to be working with their kids.

“I would always suggest having a conversation with them. Learn what their philosophy is, and you do want to make sure that you’re working with somebody that is

Also vital to tutoring success is a regular schedule, with time slotted in just like for hockey or band practices. “Our most successful students are coming three or four hours a week. With just one hour a

week, you’re really not making any progression.”

Academic struggles can get lost in the maelstrom of sports, extracurricular activities, or things happening at home, but it’s vital that struggles are dealt with before

they balloon into larger and larger struggles.

“Often education gets put on the back burner, but it’s so important,” Lander says. “It’s the most important factor for their economic future.”

The Victoria-based soccer franchise is joined in the marketing category by 2013 PDL Champion Austin Aztex, 2013 expansion side Lane United FC and FC Tucson. Awards will be handed out Dec. 10-14.

Royals down Cougars The Victoria Royals scored two shorthanded goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night, with Austin Carroll scoring the game winner.

Ownership means more for members Co-op housing creates a tight-knit community, says a Friendship Housing Co-op resident Steven Heywood News staff

Residents of Sidney’s Friendship Housing Co-operative pitch in and work together to create a sense of community.

That’s the verdict on co-op living

by Lisa Wilson who has been living in Sidney at Friendship Housing Cooperative for more than three years.

Wilson has spent eight years in similar co-ops around the province and said what keeps her coming back is how the residents have a say in how the co-operative is run.

“It’s better than renting, she said in a recent interview with the News Review. “We have secure housing and no landlord but ourselves.”

Located on Fifth Street, the Friendship Housing Co-Op is a collection of units ranging in size from two to four bedrooms.

Fiona Jackson, communications director with the Co-operative Housing Foundation of B.C. told the PNR last month that it’s one of 262 coops in the province and the 34 on Vancouver Island. Most of those, she continued, are located throughout Greater Victoria.

Members of a housing co-op, Jackson said, get security of tenure, meaning they can stay as long as they pay their housing charge and follow the rules.

Residents are also expected to take part on the local board of directors, helping create a better sense of ownership. In the case of Friendship, it is a non-profit business, managed by its members.

For Wilson, she said residents there pay around $1,100 a month, but that varies. Rents only go up,

“We can usually (keep costs) at just below market prices in Sidney,” Wilson said, “generally speaking.”

That means there is almost always

a waiting list of people wanting a unit in the co-operative. With 15 units in all, and a few that have subsidized housing charges, demand is there, she said.

Wilson said she has been on

the co-op’s board of directors for two terms — the first time she has served on a co-op board.

“We are legally and financially responsible for running the co-op,” she explained. “It has been a steep learning curve.”

Keeping up with unit maintenance is only the beginning of the duties overseen by the board of directors, she said. They must stay on top of finances, approve capital expenses and follow their 10-year plan.

“It’s very involved. It’s worth it for me because you get to know your neighbours very well. For me, that’s very important.”

Wilson said Friendship has a strong community atmosphere.

When she was living between cooperatives before finding a unit in Sidney, she said she really missed that.

“You have to find solutions to problems together and you have to get along.”

One of the questions she hears the most is from people asking if Friendship Housing Co-operative is a commune. Wilson said it’s not, in any way.

“We’re just a group of home owners.”

Like-minded home owners, she added.

“There’s some really great people here.”

Wilson said she would not have been able to afford to live in Sidney if it wasn’t for Friendship. She said she loves being a part of the entire Sidney community and enjoys living close to everything she and her family needs.

“It’s got that small-town feel. We have everything here.”

An Acura made in Canada, just for Canada

PThe Acura CSX was made in Canada and only sold in Canada. Essentially it’s a sportier and more luxurious Honda Civic as it shares most major parts, other than engines. So, an owner not only gets the renowned reliability, fuel efficiency and functionality of a Civic, but also a higher level of performance and luxury ... very nice!

First released for the 2006 model year, CSX came with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that can also be found in an Acura RSX, with slightly different tuning. A suspension upgrade also gives CSX better handling than a Civic and it originally came in Touring and Premium (with leather upholstery, Xenon headlights and a power sunroof) trim levels.

A new more performance oriented version called the Type-S replaced Premium for the 2007 model year. The standard 2.0-litre engine can produce 155 horsepower, but the 2.0-litre in a Type-S version can churn-out 197 horsepower. The manual transmission in a base CSX is a five-speed, while the Type-S has a six-speed. A fivespeed automatic transmission was a popular option, An automatic model also comes with steering wheel mounted paddle-shift (manual) controls. Using the newly revised (and more realistic) fuel economy rating method, a CSX (auto) should get 10.9/7.8 L/100 km (city/ highway) and 10.0/7.6 L/100 km (city/

highway) with the manual transmission.

Other than leather upholstery, which became standard on every CSX, there were no significant changes for 2008 model year. In 2009, the CSX got a minor facelift up front and 17-inch wheels, fog lights and USB port for audio players all became standard equipment. The CSX Type-S became the CSX i-Tech (and came with xenon headlights, a navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity) for the 2011 model year, its final year of production.

A used CSX doesn’t cost too much more than a top-line Civic. Not only do you get more content and performance, Acura models also come with a longer warranty than Honda. Full coverage is for 4 years or 80,000 km, compared to 3 years/60,000 km from Honda.

You won’t find ratings for an Acura CSX in Consumer Reports or the results of any US crash testing. However, it’s safe to assume that it would achieve similar results to the Honda Civic, which does spectacularly well in owner survey ratings and also receives top ratings occupant protection in a collision.

Used prices may be on the high side, but if you like the Honda Civic, yet desire a little extra pampering and performance, take a look and a drive in used Acura CSX. Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase.

With the nights getting longer and the dark grey days ahead, anybody venturing out to do a little four wheeling will tell you good off-road lighting is a must.

Make sure you only operate them off-road. Good quality wiring of a set of off-road lights is important when installing them on your truck, SUV or 4x4.

Simply running a power and ground may work but is not the correct way to wire them. Most off-road lights draw a lot of power when switching them on, and this load should never be applied directly to the switch. Using a relay for the switching duties will save your switch and lights as well as make for a safer installation.

Relays are easy to install and some lights come with them, but if not, you can pick up a relay from your local auto parts store. Install a switch in the cab of your truck in a location that is convenient for you to reach, , or tap into the high-beam circuit of the headlights to power the relay. Mount the relay inside the cab, under the dash or other location out of the way and out of the elements.

Run a wire from the battery or , other positive source to the switch. This is the positive feed to switch the relay on. You will also need to run a ground wire to the switch from the frame or

other ground then run a positive feed wire from the battery to the positive in position on the relay.

There will be four connectors on the relay, a positive, a negative, a positive out and a positive in from the battery. Read the packaging or directions to determine which is which.

Find the ground position on the relay and run a wire from it to a good ground on the chassis of the vehicle.

Anywhere on the frame or other metal structure of the vehicle will normally produce a decent ground.

Run a section of wire from the switch output to the switched power input on the relay. Again, this will be marked or identified on the directions that came with your relay. Run the last wire from the relay positive out position to the lights and connect it to the positive feed on the lights. Ground the lights by attaching the black or ground wire to the frame or other ground on the truck.

HID lights have become more popular with off-roaders these days. Installation is a little more work. But the principles remain the same. Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the kit. HID stands for High intensity discharge which

refers to a new technology that relies on an electrical charge to light the xenon gas contained in a sealed bulb.

Unlike the halogen bulb, the HID bulb does not have a filament, because there is no filament the bulbs are not susceptible to vehicle vibration damaged. There are however effected by and fluctuations in the vehicles electrical system and depending on the vehicle they may require some resistors.

The HID bulb creates light by bridging an arc between two electrodes, instead of heating a filament. This light is similar to the energy transfer when lightning strikes. The arc stimulates the xenon gases producing bright white beam of light.

Motoring Maui: The Bliss and the Bad Lahaina, Maui - Locals call it the “Maui Merge.”

It’s enough to take a blissfully mellow tourist and perhaps get them as heated as their freshly acquired crimson sunburn.

It’s a merge that doesn’t take place within the lines of an ending lane, as one would imagine. Somehow that merge extends onto the shoulder and beyond.

Watch out for the cyclist and the stray dog!

It’s almost like a game, I’m told, to see how far ahead of all the other cars you can get.

As I observe this type of manouevre in action from a Ford Escape rental vehicle, I can’t help but chuckle to myself. I guess some things stay the same no matter what kind of paradise you’re driving in.

But it’s not all bad, right?

If you’re not stuck in traffic on Maui’s west island’s main highway – which doesn’t always move at a highway-like speed – you’re in luck. You’ll have a warm, tropical breeze flowing through the cabin, unless you’re in need of an air conditioning overdose to counteract the humidity.

Hawaii Route 30, also known as the Honoapi'ilani Highway, is a 56-kilometre stretch of road that you end up on when traveling to Lahaina or close to it.

A “family” reunion just happened to be taking place on one of Hawaii’s eight islands, which gave me a perfect excuse to beat the fall blah’s and grey skies that this time of year blesses us with. I use family in bunny ears since my BFF since childhood, Nikki, and I have been sister-like since grade three. Her family is my family. And vice versa.

And as families do, they try to figure out logistics and transportation; who will be going in whose car when it came to outings. A total of nine of us were vacationing together.

Luckily, my other sister, Minti lives on the island and had her Honda Odyssey to shuttle some adults, and her three daughters. Good thing. The Escape is roomy, though not that roomy. But when a chronic noise came from the brakes, the minivan was out of commission.

Luckily for only a few hours,

chaos could have ensued.

Being the car person, I accompanied her to a local shop.

Not only did her car get fixed very quickly, it gave insight into the local racing scene. Yes, there’s one on Maui and it’s probably not what you would have expected.

Owner of Kaanapali Car Care, Bill Throckmorton, had his 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 on the hoist. With a small block Chevy inside that produces upwards of 400 horsepower, this vehicle meant business. Dirty business.

From March to October, those looking for some wholesome family fun (and maybe some tailgating, whatever you interpret that to be!) are invited to the dirt track to watch him, along with fellow sprint car racers and demolition derby participants.

It takes place at the appropriately named “Paradise Speedway Maui.” Here’s the website in case you’re as curious as I am (http:// www.paradisespeedwaymaui.com) Regardless, I thanked him for his invite to the endof-season event but our schedule was packed to the brim. Lahaina was a quick commute (sometimes) from the Honua Kai resort where all of us gathered.

It was a breath of fresh air. Not only because we got off the resort, but it borders along a picturesque coastline. It’s the kind of coastline that postcards are made of: full of palm trees shimmying to the music of the wind.

There you encounter scooters buzzing by, happy couples hand-in-hand and many modes of transportation intermingling.

Front Street in Lahaina has a little bit of magic to it, too. In 2011, it was named by the American Planning Association as one of the “Great Streets.”

Not every street can be great. They have guidelines.

The visit was all too short and then traffic met us on the other end. What happens when you want to escape the drawbacks of paradise driving and you’re stuck in in the back seat of a car?

Perhaps this is the answer.
