France recognizes liberators Teresa Mallam arts@pgfreepress.com Every Remembrance Day for the past 70 years, Armand Denicola has put on the military jacket with his war medals and paid tribute to his fallen comrades with a silent prayer.

Today the 92-year-old still has painful and poignant memories of his wartime experiences, from role in pivotal military operations such as the June 6, 1944 landing on Juno Beach (one of five beaches in France targeted by the Allies) to the much celebrated liberation of Holland from German occupation and the ultimate defeat of Nazi military forces.

Tuesday was the first time on November 11 that Denicola could wear a special medal awarded to him by the government of France.

It was sent in the mail just a few weeks ago.

Called the National Order of the Legion of Honour, it is the highest decoration in France. In August, after a long search to find hundreds of living veterans – this medal is not to be awarded posthumously – those who took part in the liberation of France were bestowed with the honour.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

Although he’s honoured to be a recipient of the medal from France, Denicola only wishes he could share it with his fellow soldiers.

“On Remembrance Day I always think of the buddies I’ve lost in the war. So this medal really belongs to them too. It took them (French government) a long time – 70 years – but it is still an honour,” says Denicola, who has had his medal for the liberation of Holland for many years.

He’s one of two Second World War veterans in Prince George to be presented with the Legion of

Honour medal – the other is his long time friend, John Kuharchuk, 90, also of the Canadian Scottish regiment. The two sat together Tuesday observing Remembrance Day ceremonies at the cenotaph at City Hall.

Denicola considers himself lucky to have been able to return home to Canada.

He was 20 years old, living on Vancouver Island when he enlisted and became a private in the Canadian Scottish regiment. Soon he was sent overseas to join up with the other Allied forces.

Heavy casualties were sustained during the 10-week Battle of Normandy; according to historians, several thousand armed forces personnel lost their lives, many others were injured.

There wasn’t a day on the front lines in Europe that Denicola didn’t fear for his life and that of his fellow soldiers, he said. But there was a war to fight and a job to be done.

“It was a 24-hour job, you had to be on your guard all the time. You were afraid all the time because you knew the next bullet could be yours. There was always bullets flying around your head like hornets and you had to watch helplessly as

your friends were dying all around you in the trenches. I’ll never go to hell when I die because I’ve been there already.”

Amid the terrible times there were some happy events, he said.

“Whenever we went in and liberated one of these little towns in France and Holland, as we did, the townspeople were always so happy to see us. They would come up to us with flowers and give us hugs. We really felt that we accomplished something over there.”

War was serious business though. and casualties on both sides were common.

Denicola was wounded while the troops were “dug in” on an island in Orne River in Lorraine, located in north-eastern France.

“I know it sounds awful, but when we first came into a town, we would target the church tower because that’s where the Germans would go and hide to get the best vantage point from. Once when the Germans were counter attacking overnight, I got shot.

“Our medical station had been blown up. There were no medics to help so I took refuge in a church where there was five or six nuns taking care of us. I even had scrapnel lodged in my helmet – half an inch lower and I wouldn’t be here now talking to you (the reporter).”

He still relives the horrors of war in his sleep.

“Armand came home from the war a changed man,” says his wife Doreen, who has been married to him for 51 years. “Even now, all these years later, he’ll be in bed sleeping and suddenly he’ll start thrashing about and flailing his arms – he’s still fighting the war.”

Many of her husband’s contemporaries have already passed away, and Doreen is happy that Armand has written an account of his war years in his memoirs, written for his children and grandchildren.

It is titled simply My Story.

Others were not so lucky, she concedes. They did not live to tell their stories. Even those who came home without physical scars often did not have happy or productive lives due to post traumatic stress

disorder, she said.

“With the passing of every war veteran, we lose that part of the story, we lose that part of our history because their knowledge is gone with them. That worries me.”

Denicola immigrated from Italy with his parents as a three-year old. He recalls having to walk a long distance from the train station to Forman Road.

His family has lived on the same rural homestead near Prince George through five generations.

Denicola spent his working years

as a cowboy in the Chilcotin.

“He wrote his story in longhand, in five scribblers,” said Doreen. “I had to correct some of the grammar because he only went to Grade 5 with his formal education.”

The couple have three children, two boys and a girl. They have nine grandchildren.

“We’ve taught them all to respect the veterans and to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies wherever they are because it’s so important to all of us.”

Health organizations and dentists form group urging ‘yes’ vote in referendum

A coalition of organizations and individuals promoting the benefits of continuing natural water fluoridation in Prince George is urging residents to vote ‘yes’ in the upcoming water fluoridation referendum.

The group includes local dentists, health professionals, educators, professional associations, and non-profit groups.

Residents in Prince George will go to the polls on November 15 to vote on continuing water fluoridation in the city, and the Say Yes to Keep Prince George Water Fluoridation group is encouraging residents to check the “yes” box.

“It is known that the rate of tooth decay and oral health problems are greater in communities without water fluoridation, that is why it is important to continue the fluoridation practice,” said Dr. Richard Wilczek, coalition co-chair and local dentist. “This is about doing what is right for the most vulnerable populations in the City of Prince George for a reasonable rate.”

In the KPMG core review, it said the city of Prince George spends $56,100 a year to ensure the levels of naturally occurring fluoride mineral nutrient added to the water system are at an optimal 0.7 parts per million. The KPMG report also recommended continuing this practice. Water fluoridation costs less than a dollar a person a year in Prince George for an important health benefit, according to the group.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention shows that $1 in prevention equates to $38 in cost savings for the health care system, they say. Residents of Prince George have a choice of spending $56,100 a year which is less than a dollar per resident on fluoridation to prevent disease, or spend an extra $2.1 million per year, about $38 per resident, to treat disease, according to the group’s statement. Fluoridation of the water system theoretically saves the health care system over $2 million a year and prevents disease. In a time of fiscal constraint, this is a compelling reason to continue this practice.

“It costs less than a dollar a year per resident to continue this important practice, seen as one of the top 10 public health initiatives in the 20th century by the World Health Organization,” said Margit Strobl, coalition co-chair and educator. “There are people in the community that cannot afford access to dental care; therefore it is imperative we help them care for their teeth in other ways. Continuing water fluoridation is a key way we can help.”

previous forum, however, the groupings were not totally random Instead, the six incumbents were put in two of the groups while the 12 new candidates made up the other four groups.

Incumbent candidates Tim Bennett, Brenda Hooker and Trish Bella were asked where budget cuts should be made is the board was faced with another shortfall this year, as it was last year.

Bennett said, “We have to be realistic, the current provincial government will be in place until 2017. I don’t think we can assume there will be any extra funding. We need to focus on making cuts outside classroom.”

Hooker agreed with Bennett that there little chance of more funding coming.

“We need to enrol more stakeholders in discussion to really know where we can make cuts that don’t impact classrooms.”

Bella, however, said the board should not be looking at making any cuts.

“I don’t know who we’re kidding when we say make cuts away from the classroom. Every cut affects the classroom. I am not comfortable sitting on surplus when we have kids right now who need

Three other new candidates were asked about how they would deal with concerns about workload, anxiety and low morale in the workforce in the district. Bob Harris said people have to understand the system has changed.

“The nature of the school classroom is not the same as the one they went through some years ago. It’s a very different environment teachers are required to work in now.

The district leadership has to make sure supports that are necessary to help them do job are in place.”

Don Sabo said the workers needed to have more say in what happened at all levels of the district.

“I would still like to see that inclusion, to have their voices heard.”

The forum was cohosted by the Prince George District Teachers Association, the District Parent Advisory Council, CUPE and the Professional Employees Association, and was held at Vanier Hall.

Police are requesting the public’s help identifying a man involved in a suspicious incident along a local walking trail.

Monday afternoon the Prince George RCMP received a report of a suspicious incident that occurred earlier in the day along the Greenway trail near UNBC. A woman walking her dog was approached by a man who propositioned her for sex. The man departed after two adults walking by offered to help the woman. The woman was escorted back to her vehicle by the couple and no further incidents occurred.

A CEO mayor or a council mayor - you decide One of the main criticisms of this mayoralty election campaign has been that there is little difference between Lyn Hall and Don Zurowski.

They don’t seem to be too far apart on many of the issues facing the city, which, really, isn’t surprising because we all want what’s best for the city.

The choice then comes down to who will do the best job.

Now, thanks to Garth Frizzell’s open letter to both candidates, we have something that differentiates the two candidates. And, if truth be told, it’s kind of what Hall has been campaigning on all along … leadership style.

Frizzell, who was shunned from Mayor Shari Green’s inner circle pretty much from Day 1, questioned the WRITER’S BLOCK candidates on whether they BILLPHILLIPS would be a ‘council mayor’ or a ‘CEO mayor.’

There’s no question that Shari Green was a ‘CEO mayor’ by Frizzell’s definition: “A ‘CEO Mayor’ believes that ultimately s/he is responsible for the success or failure of policies at the city.”

A good example of this was last year’s snow debacle.

When the ice was hitting the radiator, Green circled the wagons and defended city staff from the shards being launched by the public and several city councillors. In fact, anyone who has watched council for the past while will have noticed that Green defends city management first and foremost on just about every issue.

A ‘council mayor’ is one, according to Frizzell, who “is one among nine, whose influence comes not from pre-determined authority, but because they can articulate the issues best, can be influential and compelling.”

Having suffered under the wrath of a ‘CEO mayor’ there’s no doubt which one Frizzell would prefer. A ‘council mayor’ is “persuasive because they’re competent, have integrity and a clear vision,” he says.

As for the two candidates, Hall said he would likely be a ‘council mayor’ because “it is imperative that a mayor treats each council member as an integral part of the team of nine.”

He adds, however, that at times he would be a ‘CEO mayor,’ because sometimes decisions simply need to be made.

As for Zurowski, he’s pretty much a ‘CEO mayor’ all the way.

“A good CEO builds a strong team and relies on the strengths and input from those team members to move the corporation, in our case the city, in the direction of the common vision,” he wrote in response to Frizzell,

adding that a good CEO leads the company with the best interests of the shareholders, in this case the residents of Prince George, in mind.

For me, I’ve never liked the notion that governments should be run like businesses and that our politicians should consider themselves chief executive officers. They’re not. They’re politicians, and in the case of the mayor, they’re the mayor.

And the unspoken message in Frizzell’s letter is that the current council was certainly on the road to dysfunction, if it wasn’t already there. At least from Frizzell’s perspective, and likely others, that dysfunction came from having a ‘CEO mayor.’

Naming the mayor Sometimes, I grow tired of seeing drivers do the same old things, usually resulting in them becoming relegated to the ranks of Blacktop Blockheads.

On the weekend, though, I saw something I had never seen before, and I don’t really think it qualifies for Blockhead status, because I don’t know if the driver was distracted or not.

I was turning into a parking lot, with a vehicle patiently waiting to come out. The driver had come to a full stop, and I saw him glance both ways to see if it was clear to proceed.

When he glanced in my direction as I turned past him, I had to do a double take.

I am quite certain he had a harmonica in his mouth.

He didn’t have either hand on it. Both of them were on the wheel, where they belonged. I couldn’t tell if he was playing the instrument or not, or just holding it in place.

I do know I could not recall ever seeing that before. ALLAN’S AMBLINGS ALLANWISHART • So two weeks from tonight, Nov. 28, we start another year of Operation Red Nose.

Once again this year I will be working out of the headquarters on 15th Avenue, and the last I heard, the plan was for me to do the same as last year, working as a trainer with the people answering the phones and making sure the system is working the way it’s supposed to.

It’s always a lot of fun, and the other volunteers are great to work with. They’re even willing to (usually) put up with my sense of humour.

It’s a super cause, keeping the roads safe and making sure people get home safely on the holiday weekends.

• Some people have asked me who I’m going to vote for in the race for school trustee, since that’s the race I’ve been covering for the paper.

I tell them, quite honestly, that I haven’t decided yet (and as I wrote this Wednesday morning, that’s still true).

The other thing I tell them is that you could come to me Saturday night and say, “These are the seven people who got in”, and I would say, “Good choices.”

I don’t think there’s a bad choice among the 18 candidates. What could make the next four years interesting around the table are the personalities involved.

• I am going to do something I don’t normally do.

I’m going to make a prediction about the election results.

Generally, I wait until after the election and then tell people, “yeah, that’s what I figured would happen,” but this year, I’m going to be bold.

The next mayor of Prince George will be a man with three letters in his first name, a name which ends in an ‘n’.

I have a good feeling about this one being right.

ntrants in the Free Press Election Pool have Lyn Hall and Don Zurowski neck-and-neck heading into tomorrow’s election.

Of our 255 entrants, 130 have picked Lyn Hall to the city’s next mayor while 125 have picked Don Zurowski.

That gives Hall 50.98 per cent of the vote and Zurowski 49.02.

Remember, the winner of our pool has to pick who wins and what percentage of the vote they get.

We make no claims on the accuracy of our pool picks, but if it’s any indication of how the vote is shaping up, it could be a long night tomorrow as we wait for ballots to be counted.

With our tie-breaking question to name the eight city councillors, not much has changed there. Entrants in our pool have all incumbents returning with Brian Skakun (219 votes) and Murry Krause (212) well out in front. Garth Frizzell is next (191), followed by Frank Everitt and Albert Koehler (169 each), followed by Cameron Stolz (133) and Dave Wilbur (125). Battling for the last seat on council are Susan Scott (116), Debora Munoz (115) and Terri McConnachie (91).

hink back to 2011, right after our last municipal election. If asked where we’d be in 2014, many in northern B.C. wouldn’t have predicted our current state.

Coming out of the recession, we weren’t sure how the economy would fare, or how our communities would do.

Compare that to our situation now: intense international interest in liquefied natural gas, a restored and diversified forestry economy, growing business districts, and more. A lot can happen in three years.

Weathering changes is made possible by responsible and committed local governments – the same governments we voted for in 2011. Making the best of opportunities takes a different kind of savvy, one that our future local governments will need.

CivicInfo BC shows that in 2010, only 29 per cent of registered voters cast a ballot across B.C. The Columbia Institute recently released a study, titled “Getting the Majority to Vote.” It addressed the lower municipal turnout rate, and cites increased work (figuring out which candidates to vote for) and decreased benefits of voting (local government isn’t perceived to hold much influence).

Many aren’t aware of what powers local politicians have – from RCMP budgets to snow clearing and road maintenance, many issues aren’t as ‘sexy’ as those at the provincial or federal level. But pipeline deals, revenue sharing, and worker camps are all issues that directly impact Northern BC residents, and they are all issues that that our local governments exercise control over.

All residents, young and old, need to get out and vote on November 15, because it is our region that will change the most over the next four years in British Columbia. If you call your community home, take the time to educate yourself on candidates. Show that you care about your leadership, and who is making decisions on your behalf. Make your voice heard, because whether it is for mayor and council, or regional district, or school trustee, every vote matters.

Cut through the Zehaf Bibeau was city hall bureaucracy likely seeking death by cop, and got it Editor: So that the death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo shall not have been in vain, it is important that we look at the suicide of Michael Zehaf Bibeau.

For have no doubt, suicide was his main objective. Consider his actions. He thought that he was looking at armed soldiers. By killing one he would in return be gunned down. When this didn’t happen he was frustrated. What to do? Right, the Parliament Building, it should be heavily guarded and so off he went. There, his wish was fulfilled and he was gunned down.

This is known as suicide by police or suicide by cop.

Certainly Zehaf Bibeau had terrorist leanings but this was only to justify his actions in his own mind.

However, his actions have had some unintended consequences.

On my part a sense of gratitude that he wasn’t a dedicated terrorist or he would have known that the soldiers weren’t armed and he would have had terrible plans for the Parliament. Also exposed now is the lack of security at the building.

He should have been stopped at or before the door. Our elected representatives deserve better than this. So forewarned is forearmed. Changes should take place now. The man had a gun.

There are many worrying things about a suicide. It looks like an easy way to get out of life’s troubles. Other people haven’t helped and often made things worse so they aren’t considered. But it does affect other people. Suicide becomes more socially acceptable.

It encourages other people to see it as a way out.

Most people who commit suicide have known someone who died that way. So it becomes a “copycat” action. There is no thought given to the people left behind who have to clean up the mess and/or who are emotionally devastated by his/her death.

Prevention is often talked about but difficult to implement. We interfere in other peoples’ lives at our own peril.

For example, the person who tries to save a drowning man and who ends up dead himself. Professional help, certainly in Prince George, has often not been immediately available, in practical terms just not available. This was due to a lack of psychiatrists, etc. In fact, even now, I suspect that only an unsuccessful attempt at suicide would get immediate attention.

The death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo has united Canadians in a very positive way.

It has highlighted the deficit in security planning, not just against terrorist but any person or persons with a grudge.

He was a symbol of what we Canadians are, honouring those who have protected us in the past, but unarmed because he was not going to shoot someone who dishonoured the memorial. We do not have the death penalty and should not make it easy for people to impose it on themselves or others.

Do not glorify or magnify the actions of Zehaf Bibeau – he was only going for death by cop.

Editor: Recently I attempted the process of subdivision and development for a commercial project on Otway near the Rolling Mix facility on Foothills.

I was somewhat discouraged and just a bit irate in my attempts at dealing with the employees, and processes at city hall.

My family has been doing business here in Prince George for close to 50 years. I, as a businessman, am somewhat baffled as to why the city leaders have not figured out that it is usually the businessperson mentality that brings growth to fruition. I question why employee attitudes and processes at city hall continue to front line our growth.

It does not make financial sense, on one hand, to spend taxpayer dollars to try and promote city growth while, on the other hand, stifle the process of growth on the front line. As a businessperson, I know that if I am going to spend money trying to promote growth, I had better have the infrastructure in place to back it up. Otherwise, it is a complete waste of time and money.

My question to our political candidates is twofold: Firstly, what is your position on implementing a better process to cut through bureaucracy at city hall? And, secondly, what is your position on advocating for a committee of businesspeople to have input on city growth by way of increased business development in our city?

Some perspective on Pine Valley Editor: Re: Hall, Zurowski on Pine Valley, Free Press, November 7.

It’s about time we put some of the hyperbole around the Pine Valley Golf Course to rest. Firstly, the biggest threat to the survival of Pine Valley are the politicians, and commercial interests who would love to get their hands on this land and use if for commercial purposes.

Pine Valley ended up on the Core Review because Mayor Green and some of her supporters at the Core Review meeting made sure that it got on. I was at that meeting when the mayor made the statement “should the City be in the golf course business?”

This is not the first time the city has tried to sell off Pine Valley. Hopefully it will be the last.

For those who are not aware of the history surrounding the Pine Valley lands,

and other lands in the area, I will give you an insight. The property along Highway 16 West, which includes Pine Valley, and at one time included the ball fields, horseshoe pits, used to be the old airport owned by the federal government. When the airport was moved to its present location in 1946, the property was gifted to the city by the federal government, with a covenant that it be used for recreational purposes in perpetuity. So, the city got the land for nothing.

Later an individual who wanted to build a nine-hole, par-three golf course, and a driving range obtained a “raw land lease” from the city and built the course. This land was later leased to the McDermids and it is my understanding that they put in an additional nine holes, and the batting cages. Later it was leased to another operator, for 11 years, and is presently being operated by the latest contractor.

So, the suggestion that the city has put a

lot of money into this golf course is pure baloney. In fact over the years they got a percentage of the gross revenue and made a lot of money. It was only after they sold off the driving range, and the batting cages, that the city began to get less revenue from this facility. It’s interesting to note that even though they made huge dollars selling the driving range and batting cage land, they put very little, if any, back into the golf course.

This golf course is easily accessible to seniors, juniors, mobility challenged, and regular golfers. With the pine beetle epidemic it has lost its pine trees, however volunteers have replanted some 800 trees a few years ago, and in time this course will be, as stated by mayoralty candidate Lyn Hall, a jewel in the city.

This land is zoned as parkland, has a nice golf course in an ideal setting, and must be left where it is, and if anything upgraded to its earlier condition before the city started

selling if off piecemeal.

The backroom machinations to get this property and sell it off to commercial interests have to stop. The less than truthful statements about the cost of this course has to stop. The fact that the city has no actual money of any magnitude invested in this course has to be considered. As far as a compromise goes, the city’s idea of a compromise is to get some money for itself, and for commercial interests, and to hell with everyone else. Seems that has been the order of the day for the past three years.

This too has to stop.

It’s time for the new mayor and council to ensure that this course has a long-term contract, which will allow the operator to make some necessary improvements, and to stop once and for all the constant backroom attempts to sell off this property.

In response to your act of vandalism, I offer this suggestion: Next time you visit such a facility and perhaps have likeminded thoughts, try parking in the lot instead and jogging a few laps around the track.

You might be surprised at the new ideas that you get and the good feeling. And possibly even a new-found respect for the facility when you drive out.

Editor: I attended at the mayoral candidate debate at the University of Northern British Columbia, on November 6, 2014 and noticed the two different leadership styles between Lynn Hall and Don Zurowski.

Hall seeks to have broad, open communication in order to learn about the concerns of citizens, in order to help him make decisions. Zurowski, on the other hand, says he is going to sit down with the city manager on day one and suggest that council and employees respect one another, but that he would not seek permission from others to make his decisions. He is going to be a CEO. Power from the top. In helping me decide which candidate I want as mayor, I have to look at the underlying issues plaguing city hall in the past

few years. Lack of communication, and lack of morale.

If Zurowski is not willing to loosen up and listen to the concerns of others before he makes his decisions, we will be led by another mayor much like Shari Green who says to heck with those who disagree with her (remember, “naysayers can go to greener pastures”). If he thinks he is going to march into city manager Beth James’ office and demand that everybody respect one another without reaching out himself, we will continue to see a lack of communication and morale.

We’re not a big city, Mr. Zurowski. We are a small city no matter how hard you want us to be a big city. Many of us know each other. Some of us are bold enough to go to chambers without being intimidated, but most of us are not. We need to know what is going on in city hall, and we want to be contributors to that effort.

Children of war helped in any way they could on the homefront Teresa Mallam arts@pgfreepress.com Doreen Denicola, like thousands and thousands of Canadian school children spent the Second World War years (1939 to 1945) getting an education which included learning new skills and showing support – often in seemingly small ways – for the troops serving overseas.

“I had five brothers. My oldest brother, Cyril, was blind in one eye so he couldn’t join up but three of my brothers did,” said Denicola, 85.

“My youngest brother, Charles, was too young to enlist but he joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons cadet force.

It was a home protection force that included older men and young ones.”

All hands left at home learned to knit, she said.

“Even if all you could knit was an eight-inch square that could be made into an afghan to be sent to soldiers recovering from their war wounds in hospital in Europe, you learned to do that. Those who were wounded and suffering had so very few comforts of home during their recuperation, so this was a way for us to help.”

The emotional impact and fallout from war in Europe was felt far away in Canada, in cities and towns all over the country. Denicola lived in a very small, close-knit rural community in Manitoba with a population of 1,100 or 1,200. Recruiting officers often visited small Prairie towns like hers, and young boys were very eager to sign up, said Denicola.

“Everyone knew each other. We knew all the boys who had gone to war and our little town was empty without them. They were like our brothers. I am 85 now and the one thing that stands out indelibly in my mind – even though we were far removed from the war – was brought home in a terrible way when those telegrams would arrive [from the war department] about our casualties.”

At a young age, Denicola said she learned about loss.

“When the news came that our friends’ or neighbours’ husbands or brothers or sons had been killed, our mothers would take us girls over to their family’s home and we would do what we could to comfort and help them. We were shown at an early age how to be compassionate.”

Her own family’s boys were not killed in battle but two were seriously injured.

“My mother got a telegram about my brother Dick, a transport driver with the Regina Rifles regiment. His truck was blown up during the D-Day invasion in 1944, he and his men hit the ditch but they were riddled with bullets and shrapnel. Dick had his left

side, his leg and foot badly injured (there was minute metal fragments from the truck lodged in his skin).”

Another son and brother, Harry, in his mid-20s, was badly injured while still in combat training on home soil, and like many, many others did not even make the war front as they had hoped for.

“Harry was at Camp Shiloh in Manitoba. They were training with an explosive device, a thunderflash.

It was meant to go off outside the range of the men taking cover on the ground but instead when it came down, it fell through the trees above them and landed by the men.

“Harry tried to kick it away from them, but it was in winter, February, with lots of snow. So he picked it up and just as he got it over his head to throw it, it exploded and blew off his right hand, just above the wrist. He was blinded for a few weeks but did recover his sight.”

Denicola says, rather than feel sorry for himself, her brother was ‘browned off ’ that he never got overseas like his friends did. Another brother, Victor, was born with dislocated hips and when recruiting officers saw the 18inch scar on his leg, they deemed it unsafe to send him into battle.

He remained behind, stationed in Winnipeg and – like Harry – he was “livid” that he couldn’t join his friends and his brother Dick to fight with the Allies in Europe.

Along with all the horror stories of the conflicts in Europe, there were things that came out of their wartime experience that made quite funny stories, she said.

“There was rationing of sugar and tea and other food items and we had to do without a lot of things. Coffee was at a premium, it was just for the rich who could afford it. That is what war was to me at that time in my life.

We all had to sacrifice. We couldn’t buy nylons – the nylon was needed to make parachutes, so we painted our legs. We used black marker to make the seam down the back. In those days, you wouldn’t be caught dead without stockings.”

For teenage girls, there was another fashion item they had to do without.

“They needed all the material for the war effort, to make soldiers’ (also sailors’ and airmen’s) shirts and uniforms so we could no longer buy our dresses with its five yards of material.

Instead, we had mini skirts – long before it was the fashion. I just kept wearing my old skirts with the five yards of material.”

New shoes were out of the question, she said.

“We couldn’t buy new shoes, they needed all the leather for the soldiers’ boots, so we’d take our old shoes to the cobbler to put new soles on them.

When you’ve lived through wars and the Depression, you learn a valuable lesson, that things don’t come easily.

We have all these things now that we take for granted when we should all appreciate what we have now in this ‘throwaway’ world.”

Over the years, Denicola kept a few of her family’s ration books, including one for gasoline, that have stamps still intact. Everyone did their part to conserve and to help the war effort.

“As kids, we saved every piece of tinfoil. We all walked around with rolls of tinfoil in our pockets that we’d found in the lining of cigarette packages or inside our gum wrappers. Then we sent them away to be recycled back into metal – we were recycling long before the word was made popular.”

Then too, their little town had an important role as an air training centre for British pilots: Number 19 Elementary Training Centre.

“Britain had been badly bombed and so the airforce would send their new pilots over to Canada for training. Our little town had hundreds of them go through. We opened our doors to them and we looked after

them like our own boys. We formed a Victory Club so in their time off or on short leaves they could socialize, dance, listen to music and just feel at home before they had to go overseas.”

Her parents, who both came from London, England, always welcomed their countrymen with open arms – and so did the rest of the town, said Denicola.

Indeed, the townspeople kept in touch with the families of the pilots who trained in their town and that’s how Denicola came to know of their respective fates.

Some died in the war, others returned home safely, many suffered physical and emotional injuries (now called post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD), then known as shell shock or to some, as “cowardess.”

“The British pilots had an important role to perform once they left our town and we tried to show our respect and appreciation for what they were doing by making them less homesick before they had to go off and fight the war. I remember they taught us the English waltz – and we taught them the ‘Canadian’ jitterbug,” said Denicola, smiling at the memory.

Patron Saint a family thing Teresa Mallam arts@pgfreepress.com It’s all in the family for three actors who appear in Theatre North West’s production of The Patron Saint of Stanley Park.

Anita Wittenberg and real-life children, professional actors Sabastian Tow, 12, and Emma Tow, 16, of Kamloops, portray a family. So they already have the familiarity of being a “built-in family” when they take to the stage this month.

Emma says her future path as an actor was cast at a young age. Her father was an artistic director, her mother, of course, is an actor.

“It’s hard to avoid when you grow up in theatre. We went along with my mom to rehearsals,” she said.

Vancouver actor Brian Linds who has the role of “Skookum” Pete, is also just like one of the family.

“The world of theatre is very small so actors’ paths cross in our work. I’ve been in other productions with Anita before – and I’ve known Sabastian and Emma since they were very young,” Linds said Wednesday.

Linds played the engaging but enigmatic Pete in the Vancouver run of the play where it debuted at the Arts Club Theatre in 2010.

“I liked the script immediately,” said Linds.

“We had the director and a dramaturge [researcher and developer of play] there during our rehearsals and in the original production, we had actors playing a family. It ran for two years, people love this play.”

Set in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, the action takes place during the windstorm of 2006 when trees are falling down and two young children are caught up in its wake. They encounter Pete, a stranger, who knows things are not as they should be.

“It’s a very unusual day and Pete doesn’t understand what’s going on. He’s like a homeless person but he calls himself ‘displaced,’” said Linds.

“He’s a crusty character who walks around with a cart and collects and recycles things. He’s very critical of people who throw things away. There is mystery surrounding who he really is. It’s all very magical and mystical, it’s bittersweet and heartfelt.”

Linds is sure the Prince George audience will really enjoy this family-oriented production directed by Melissa Thomas.

Wittenberg and her children can vouch for that.

in Kamloops, so I write every day to my teacher and classmates and tell them how rehearsals are going and what it’s like to work eight hours a day.

“I’m working on a project about the show (he and his sister get credits for their work on the play) and I do math on my days off, so I balance my acting and studies.”

Emma is doing her own documentary about working on the play.

“It’s different working up here (in Prince George) on a show because at home we go to school during the day and join other cast members for rehearsals in the evening. I’m in high school now, so and I have to balance things but being here every day, I feel

more a part of the production.”

This play has a lot to offer in terms of universal themes, she says.

“Really the play is about finding your way,” says Emma.

Literally and figuratively?

“Yes, both” she says.

“My role as Jennifer is challenging because she’s completely unlike me as a person and Melissa (director) helped me to find Jennifer.

Mattila, who plays with the Prince George Tier 1 Midget hockey team, has been chosen as the first Community Health Star by Northern Health.

The program recognizes individuals throughout northern B.C. who are making a difference in the health of their communities.

Mattila was recognized for his work with mindcheck.ca, a website which promotes mental health in young people by helping them recognize warning signs in themselves or others.

“I make all my pieces to be one-of-a-kind. For commission work, I actually sit down with the person and I teach them how to do it. That way they have a hand in creating it, they put their own stamp on it.”

Valcourt’s new series, entitled Plethora, is on display at Studio 2880’s Feature Gallery until Jan. 15. It features 13 mixed media pieces, all with different subject matters – owls, Beta fish, toad, flowers, “Monet-inspired” scenery – different textures and different elements.

The artist used pieces of bur-

lap sack (rolled up to look like bamboo), aluminum foil, charcoal and pumice, poppy pods, dried roses, clay and pewter, dry wall mud and leaves to create her unique works for Plethora.

One, called The Cycle of Life, which shows salmon spawning, was inspired by the fishing and adventure trips she takes with her son, Diordan, and her husband, Ken. “I get my ideas when I’m out with them and I use them later back in my studio. I get bored easily and I never want my work to look ordinary.

“It has to be different – so I am always looking for something new to add to my paintings.”

Valcourt says she was “born knowing how to draw” so for her, creating art is second nature.

“I started drawing at a very early age – I was selling my drawings in Grade One for pocket money,” she says, laughing.

These days she’s a serious artist with students of her own and lots of admirers for her work.

“I have used all kinds of techniques including acrylics, inks, mixed media and I teach all those things to my students.”

Lisa Redpath, who set up the exhibit for the gallery, says the works are exciting for art lovers because they have a “fascinating mixture” of textures, colours and form.

Valcourt teaches art with her own business, Kat’s Eye Original Art, as well as with Studio 2880’s Artist’s Workshop and Artist’s Co-op on Hart Highway.

Consisting of 25 acrylic on canvas paintings, the artist’s series features colourful landscapes, abstract and representational works. It will be on display beginning Friday with an opening reception and artist’s talk.

“This series has paintings from a few years ago and some are recent. I have a home studio all set up now – so I’m ready to go,” Bogle said.

She left Prince George in 2003 and returned here from Nanaimo last spring. Although her latest works are acrylics, she’s widely known for her watercolours.

“I liked doing watercolours but they had to be framed, with glass, and I found that was pretty cumbersome to move them around to the various art shows and get them all set up.”

Bogle said she also wanted to experiment with different mediums.

“I love the vibrant colours you get with acrylics. In working with acrylics, you’re putting light over dark and with watercolours, it’s dark over light.”

In her artist’s statement, she says: “Although I have painted for many years, it never ceases to amaze me how colour works, and how it can make the mundane beautiful and exciting. My work can be somewhat representational or it might develop from an idea that often changes as the work progresses. The mystery of ‘what can be’ is what, I believe, keeps bringing me back to the easel.”

Bogle has enjoyed a long-standing art career and she often combines it with travel, painting on location or “plein aire” and taking her inspiration from picturesque places she visits and what she sees along the way.

“I love colour,” says Bogle.

Indeed, her works in the Just Paint exhibition stand out with deep aqua, shades of blue, pink, peach, orange and bright red.

Just Paint, a collection of Anne Bogle’s latest works, opens tonight (Nov. 14) with a reception and artist’s talk starting at 7 p.m. The exhibition runs until Dec. 20 at Groop Gallery, 1127 Third Avenue. Visit the gallery’s website at www.groopgallery.com.

BF Goodrich supplied a series of offroad exercises in which we pushed the limits of the KO2s, all of which were 20-inch 55-series tires shod upon new Chevrolet Silverado 4X4 pickups. It’s important to note that these weren’t extra-large off-road tires, they were typical replacements.

Forty minutes after departing the majesty of Lake Louise and its aquablue waters, we exited Banff National Park and headed for private testing lands. Moving from tarmac, we encountered just about every conceivable surface one might face during an off-road excursion.

Despite my best effort to burrow the KO2s deep into a mud pit, the putty-like ooze never overwhelmed them. With a little throttle prodding, the tires managed to clear away the earthen oatmeal, finding footing enough to pull 5,500 pounds of truck out of the quagmire with ease.

Hard driven to deflate a puncture resistant tire crawl, steep ascents/descents, and a log pit with sharp upward-pointing knots. The latter reputed for inflicting sudden death on typical trail tires.

Sidewalls are vulnerable, and the weakest part of a typical tire. A truck was parked atop a pointy knot. Despite the pointy knot digging into the sidewall with extreme pressure, the tire never succumbed to the silent killer in the bush.

Our day in the Rockies saw 20 Silverados – in other words 80 KO2s – performing exercise after exercise with zero failures. No flats and no stuck trucks. rrothwell@telus.net

The proposed duration of the PMP is from June 10, 2015 to June 10, 2020.

Kaitlyn, who just turned 14, is the face on the mural unveiled Nov. 6 on the Intergis Credit Union building at Sixth Avenue and Victoria Street. She says she’s excited about having a photo of her in full flight, larger than life, but . . .

“It’s a little nerve-wracking.

Now I feel like I need to make the Games and do well.”

Kaitlyn is hoping to make Team BC for the 2015 Canada Winter Games in two sports:

Alpine skiing and skicross.

“For the downhill,” she said after the unveiling, “they take your results from last year and the races this coming season an use that to pick the team. I have no idea where I stand.

“I was sick for part of last winter, so I had some good races and some bad ones.”

In skicross, though, she feels more comfortable, even though she’s only been competing for a year.

“I won the Junior Canadian Championship last season.”

She likes the photo that was chosen for the mural, saying “it’s one of my best photos.”

“What I like about it being that big is you can see the ‘speed

sparkles’ on my cheek.”

Integris manager of partnerships Dan Wingham said they wanted to show their commitment to the Games in a unique way.

“We knew we wanted a female athlete from an Alpine event, and we wanted a look that was fierce and showed competitiveness.

“We saw this picture of Kaitlyn and figured it was the one.”

Before the unveiling, Wingham made Kaitlyn an ‘unofficial’ Integris member, presenting her with a number of gifts, including a copy of the photo used in the mural, signed on the back by a number of Integris staff.

Lavanna Laass picks up pair of medals in judo Lavanna Laass of the Hart Judo Club may want to spend more time in eastern Canada.

Laass was one of three local judoka who travelled east over the past couple of weeks for a pair of competitions.

Laass won a pair of bronze medals at the Quebec Open Judo tournament in Montreal at the beginning of the month, then followed that last weekend with a silver in Senior Women -63 kg and a bronze in U21 Women -63 kg at the Ontario Open in Whitby. Those were the same divisions she competed in at the Quebec meet.

Two members of the Prince George Judo Club were also back east. Branden Edwards finished fifth in his division in Quebec, while Kyle Wilkinson was ninth in Quebec, then picked up three wins and two losses in Ontario.

Prince George curling coach Joe Rea was honoured last week with a Coaching Association of Canada Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award.

Rea coached the Canadian Paralympic curling team to its third consecutive gold medal this year in Sochi, Russia.

Grounding the Rockets Allan Wishart allanw@pgfreepress.com The Kelowna Rockets have lost just once in regulation time in their first 20 games this season.

Prince George Cougars coach Mark Holick knows it won’t be easy to stop the top team in the WHL, but they’re going to try this weekend.

“We’ve watched a lot of video of them this week,” said Holick, whose Cougars take on the

Rockets tonight (Friday) and Saturday at CN Centre. “They are what we think they are.

“We’ve got to be real good to beat them.”

What that means, in some respects, is playing more the way they did against the Victoria Royals on Friday night at CN Centre, a 3-2 win, and less the way they did against the same team a night later, losing 6-2.

“Friday, I thought we played one of our best games of the season. I didn’t like our d-zone coverage on Saturday. We got a

little sloppy and careless.”

The power play also continues to be a concern for the Cougars, as they gave up two shorthanded goals to the Royals on Saturday.

“These things are mental. A lack of focus cost us on those goals.”

That’s something they can’t afford to have happen against Kelowna.

“We have to play with discipline,” Holick said. “That means no turnovers, no bad penalties, stick to the game plan.

“Everybody n this league can

be beaten on any night.”

Holick isn’t sure if Chance Braid will be available for the games this weekend, after he took a second major in Saturday’s game.

“We haven’t heard anything from the league on a suspension, so we’ll have to wait and see what they decide.”

Northern Cougars on a roll Allan Wishart allanw@pgfreepress.com When you’ve won 14 games in a row, a team gets a feeling about it.

That’s what is happening with the Northern Cougars, the Prince George-based team in the Female Midget AAA League. After splitting the first four games of the season, the Cougars have run off 14 straight wins to hold a five-point lead at the top of the standings.

“There’s a different feeling to the team this year,” coach Mario Desjardins said after the team swept three games at home on the weekend from the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers. “There’s no panic if we get down. The last couple of years, sometimes we’d give up a goal early and lose our concentration.”

Forward Madison Fjellstrom, a third-year player with the Cougars, agrees.

“There’s lots of confidence on the team this year,” she said. “The first year I played, we were pretty young. Now we’ve got a fairly even split between second- and third-year players, and just a couple in their first year.”

She says the team had a feeling coming into the season that this might be a good one.

“We’ve always kind of expected this sort of year.

All the lines are pretty strong, so everybody gets playing time.”

Desjardins has said a number of times this season that depth is a real strength for the Cougars, since it means they are usually fresher in the third period than teams that rely on just a couple of lines. He also knows with the success they’re enjoying, they’re a target.

“Everybody’s gunning for us now. They see us as the measuring stick to see how good they are.”

The league is off this weekend, before the Cougars travel to Coquitlam for three games against

the West Coast Avalanche, who are in second place in the league.

“It’s good to have the weekend off,” Desjardins says. “It gives us a chance to reflect on how things are going and rest a

few little injuries we have.”

In December, they’re heading to Notre Dame Academy in Saskatchewan for a showcase tournament before returning to Calgary for the Mac’s Tournament just

after Christmas. Fjellstrom is looking forward to getting back to Calgary.

“Last year, we didn’t do too bad there.

This year, we have lots of confidence going in.”

First-place Cariboo Cougars can still get better, says coach Trevor Sprague Allan Wishart allanw@pgfreepress.com The Cariboo Cougars are at the top of the B.C. Major Midget League standings, but coach Trevor Sprague sees room for improvement.

“Our power play has been dismal,” he said after the Cougars swept a pair of games on the weekend from the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. “You have to be able to capitalize on it when you get the chance.

“That’s something we have to work on this week.”

The Cougars dumped the T-birds 8-1 in the opener, then beat them 4-1 in the second game.

“The first game was good,” Sprague said.

“The second game, they (Thunderbirds) played better, and we didn’t get the ‘jam’ we wanted from some of our top players.”

That said, he did praise the team’s effort when the score was 1-1 after two periods.

“We showed good character in the third period to get the win.”

It’s been somewhat of a theme for the Cariboo Cougars this year, and Sprague said some of that comes down to team depth.

“We’ve been rolling the lines pretty good all

year. A lot of teams don’t play all their lines all game, and they get tired in the third period.”

The Cougars called up a couple of players from the Tier 1 Cougars, and both Myles Mattila and Chris Jandric played well on the weekend, Sprague said. He knows his squad will be doing some juggling this weekend as well.

“Griffen Outhouse is going to Victoria to be with the Royals for a while, so Dorrin Luding will play both games this weekend.

“Both those guys have been playing really well.”

The Cougars host the Vancouver NW Giants this weekend at Kin 1. The Giants are

currently three points behind the Cougars, but have two games in hand.

“This is the first time we’ve played them this year,” Sprague said. “They’re going to be good games.”

The teams meet on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 9:45 a.m.

The Cougars also found out earlier this week they will once again be spending the Christmas holidays in Calgary, as they have received an invitation to the Mac’s Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament.

The tournament begins on Boxing Day, with the finals played on New Year’s Day at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
