New intensive care unit structure at hospital well underway Submitted
A new intensive care unit (ICU) for patients across the region is now rising above the excavated area at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook

begin later this month. On the outside of the new addition, site work continues including preparation for foundations for the new emergency generators and other mechanical and electrical equipment. Installation of this major equipment will begin early in the 2015. Work will continue on site from approximately 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the winter and will steadily be more focused on the interior of the new structure.
There will be periodic interruptions to normal traffic patterns during construction. Interior Health is working with the project contractor to minimize these impacts and appreciates the ongoing patience of local residents and visitors to the hospital as these major improvements to EKRH move forward. Project Background: The approximate total project cost of the redevelopment project at EKRH is $20 million. Funding is provided by
the Province, Kootenay East Regional Hospital District and East Kootenay Foundation for Health, which is contributing towards the clinical equipment. The new ICU unit will replace the current four-bed unit and feature two additional high-acuity beds, which will address current and future needs. The integrated design includes a 787 square-metre (approximately 8,470 square-feet) addition on the northeast side of the existing hospital.

The new intensive care unit at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital is starting to take shape. The size and design of the new ICU will provide for an improved work environment for physicians and staff, and added privacy for patients and their visitors. . The enhanced care environment for patients will feature integrated family spaces and maximized natural light. The project also includes a significant electrical upgrade at the facility. The new
electrical system will improve the power supply to the entire hospital, optimize the electrical system performance and allow capacity to expand for future power needs. The electrical infrastructure will be located in the basement of the new addition. Lark Projects Ltd. is the contractor overseeing the project, with full project completion anticipated for mid2016.

Free BC Verified Beef Information Session The Verified Beef Production (VBP) program, the established
on-farm food safety program for beef producers, is adding new education modules as part of the industry’s efforts to anchor a new generation of on-farm sustainability. Tentatively named VBP Plus, the modules will look at providing practical information on biosecurity, animal care (beef code of practice) and environmental stewardship in addition to the current on-farm food safety program platform. On Tuesday, November 18 from 5:30 to 9 pm at the Kootenay Livestock Association office, after tremendous feedback from her previous session last spring, Annette Moore, BC-VBP’s program coordinator will be returning to provide information and benefits on two of the four topics: the current VBP onfarm food safety program and how to implement practical yet effective biosecurity options for your operation. Handy tips and techniques to help you save time and money will be discussed, with real producer proven examples of how these practices are delivered. ARDCorp’s various funding program (equipment funding) information will also be explained. As seating is limited anyone interested in attending please contact Leanne at the KLA office (Ph: 250-426-4315 Thursdays only, email: kla@kootenaylivestock.ca) or 250489-5649, or Annette Moore (toll free: 1-866-398-2848, email: VBP@cattlemen.bc.ca) to save your seat. For those that register in advance soup and sandwiches will be provided (at no charge).

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Forcing Bulbs
1. You Can Force Me! Throughout the winter months, you can encourage bulbs that normally bloom outdoors in the spring to bloom indoors in a process referred to as ‘forcing’. The technique is simple, making it a great project for any gardener, from beginner to expert. Almost any type of spring-blooming bulb can be forced, although generally early-bloomers tend to do best. 2. Keeping it Chill. Before bringing them into your warm living space, bulbs intended for forcing need a cold treatment. For this, bulbs should be planted so that they are just under the surface of the soil, watered well and then put into a dark and cold area, such as a cold (but not freezing) garage, an unheated basement or even a fridge. 3. Timing is Key. It depends on the bulb when the plant is ready to come out of storage. Generally, they are ready to grow in your home when the sprouts appearing from their tops are firm and well-developed and there is a good supply of healthy roots. It is important to gradually let the plant adjust to the warm house, starting them off in the coolest spot possible. 4. Who Needs Soil Anyway? The planting soil you use for forcing bulbs should be light and airy, containing additives such as peat moss or vermiculite. Most bulbs are grown in potting soil, but they can prosper in just about anything, even a bunch of decorative rock. Important is that water can drain away easily so the bulbs will not rot. 5. There is no White like Paperwhite. Unlike most other daffodils, the paperwhite narcissus does not require a cold period before forcing. The bulbs are simply planted in a container with soil or decorative rock. After you have added a little water, they will rapidly grow roots and shoots. The small, fragrant flowers usually open up within two to three weeks of planting. 6. What Smells so Good? Hyacinths are often forced in special glass vases that have a pinched neck. The bottom of the glass is filled and the bulb placed on the top with the bottom of the bulb just above, but not touching the water. After sitting in a dark, cold area for several weeks, roots will fill the glass and the top will have grown an inch or two. That is when the vase can come out and the hyacinth will start unleashing its full show and sweet scent. 7. Colour for Dull Days. With their many bright colours, tulips are great bulbs for bringing some colour into your winter home. Generally, they need between 9 to 15 weeks from the time they are planted until they start to bloom, including their time in cold storage. Crocus have a slightly shorter chill time, consequently blooming a bit sooner. 8. Layers of Fun. Traditionally, shallow bulb pans have been popular vessels for forcing bulbs. In recent years, one trend has been to use deeper clay or plastic pots and planting in layers, perhaps even mixing several different types of plants. This method can give you longer bloom times and more interest with clever combinations. 9. More is More. For a stunning effect, it is best to plant as many bulbs as will fit into the container without touching each other. If you place bulbs, especially tulips, on the outside edge of the pot with their flat side facing the pot, it will give a fuller look when the bulbs flower. 10. The Show is Over. Once forced bulbs have completed their flowering, it is best to discard them. One exception are daffodils - they can often successfully be planted out and might be blooming again in the following season.

EKFH’s Starlite Campaign is preparing for its 7th annual appearance later this month. In the meantime, many health care departments have started to receive pieces of equipment secured from donations from the 2013 campaign. One such department is the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s Respiratory Unit. EKFH recently purchased 10 cases of aerochambers for the unit. An aero-
chamber is a plastic tube with a mouthpiece that has a sealed end that attached to a metered dose inhaler. Inside the tube is a valve that controls the delivery of the inhaled mist of medicine. The aerochamber makes a whistling noise if it is not being used properly. This helps the user know that he or she needs to adjust their breathing effort. This aids in the effectiveness of the delivery of medicine into the lungs
as well as ensuring the proper dosage. Donations to the Starlite Campaign support and strengthen health care in hospital and health care facilities in the East Kootenay. The 2014 Starlite Campaign will begin on November 28 and run through to the end of January. Donations can be made at your local hospital, on-line at www.ekfh.ca or by mail to EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9. For more information contact Donna Grainger at 1-877-4896481 or 250 489-6481.

Roadways are a very dynamic environment with situations and circumstances that can change quickly. There is great potential for injury and property damage if drivers are not obeying the rules of the road. Signs and signals such as school zones, stop, yield signs and traffic lights are only a few tool used to assist drivers in keeping safe while they navigate City streets. In order for these signs and signals to work, they first need to be seen then obeyed. Please be aware of and respect all traffic signage and signals when driving all year. Make sure our streets are safe for everyone! A Message from the Cranbrook RCMP and the City of Cranbrook.
Snow Removal – On Street Parking
During snow events in the winter months, City of Cranbrook crews and contractors will be out busy clearing the streets. Residents are encouraged to avoid parking their vehicles on the street if possible, as the City of Cranbrook will not be responsible for vehicle damage caused by snow removal operations.

With great looks and some of the best and sportiest interiors of American cars of the era, even European collectors have taken a new look at Hawks, where the car’s small by American standards proportions make more sense. Ten years ago, these were $25,000 cars. This past January, a not terribly well optioned car sold at an auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., for more than $100,000. Let’s hear it for the underdog. 2. 1965-69 Corvair convertible: The air-cooled rear-

foray into the mid-engine exotic world. Just over 450 were built. With a little development help early on from Lamborghini and some inspiration from an earlier Paul Braqdesigned concept car, BMW produced a credible supercar and the first officially badged M-car that spawned a long line of special Motorsports BMWs. Back in the flamboyant 1970s, though, the car was deemed too low-key inside and out. But its subtle good looks have aged extremely well. As recently as 2003, an M1 sold for just $49,000 at an auction in the UK. Three years later, they were still going for well under $100,000. This past March, one sold at an auction in Florida for $379,000. 4. 1976 Porsche 912E: Porsche has always
struggled with the entry-level stuff. They know that they should have an entry-level car, but they’ve often either fumbled the execution and/or suffered a backlash from the Porsche snobs. The 912E was a one-year-only stop-gap effort that held down the downmarket fort after the end of 914 while the front-engine, water-cooled 924 was readied for the U.S. It was essentially a stripper 911 with a VW Transporter-derived 2.0-liter Type IV air-cooled four-cylinder en-

lived forever in the shadow of its bigger, sportier and more powerful sibling the 300SL. And while they’re outwardly a bit similar, they’re in a whole different league performancewise. The 190SL used to be dismissed as “a German Thun-
derbird,” or a car whose looks wrote a check that its performance couldn’t cash. But as 300SLs rose to over $1 million, collectors began to accept the 190SL for what is was—a very well-built and pretty sunny day cruiser. Cars that traded for

dog. The hatchet job that Ralph Nader did on the first generation of the car tainted even the vastly improved second-generation Corvair. In truth, it was a fantastic car, with great looks and even an optional turbocharger. Jay Leno loves his. Yet, historically, they’ve appealed to a narrow market—fans of front-engine Chevy muscle shun the car as do import snobs, to whom the car’s size, looks and handling should appeal. Collectors were fond of saying that Corvairs would always be cheap. How wrong they were. Nice convertibles struggled to break $15,000 less than 10 years ago; they’ve since doubled in value.

An Acura made in Canada, just for Canada By Bob McHugh
The Acura CSX was made in Canada and only sold in Canada. Essentially it’s a sportier and more luxurious Honda Civic as it shares most major parts, other than engines. So, an owner not only gets the renowned reliability, fuel efficiency and functionality of a Civic, but also a higher level of performance and luxury ...
very nice! First released for the 2006 model year, CSX came with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that can also be found in an Acura RSX, with slightly different tuning. A suspension upgrade also gives CSX better handling than a Civic and it originally came in Touring and Premium (with leather upholstery, Xenon headlights and a power sunroof) trim

You won’t find ratings for an Acura CSX in Consumer Reports or the results of any US crash testing. However, it’s safe to assume that it would achieve similar results to the Honda Civic, which does spectacularly well in owner survey ratings and also receives top ratings occupant protection in a collision. The rush of air escaping a tire is not a sound one hopes to hear deep in the outback. According to a tire industry study, 84 percent of tire failures incurred off-road are due to sidewall puncture, often rendering tires irreparable. BF Goodrich has done something about this deflating fact. High in Canada’s rugged Rocky Mountains is where they chose to launch their revised KO line of all-terrain tires. Termed “KO2,” the new boots bring forth many improvements to a tire already considered by many in the off-roading community to be the benchmark. That reputation was earned through a longstanding commitment to off-road racing and motorsports – winning the Baja 1000 more than all other tire manufacturers combined – and its advances in tire technology since introducing the first allterrain tire back in 1976. The tire manufacturer

A handful of crusty auto journalists, more used to testing cars rather than tires, ventured to Lake Louise in the Rockies to put the tires through a reality test. BF Goodrich supplied a se-

Hard driven to deflate a puncture resistant tire ical tire. A truck was parked atop a pointy knot. Despite the pointy knot digging into the sidewall with extreme pressure, the tire never succumbed to the silent killer in the bush. Our day in the Rockies saw 20 Silverados – in other words 80 KO2s – performing exercise after exercise with zero failures. No flats and no stuck trucks.

VENDOR FAIR
November 15 •10-3pm Prestige Hotel, Cranbrook
Slugs: Big Slug to a local preserver company that despite taking local wood, refuses to sell to locals. I advise going to Coleman for posts at half the price. Hugs: To the Chamber of Commerce for your recent ad that encourages people to vote. Hugs: Huge hugs to all the staff at Grubstake Pizza in Kimberley. Busy, busy place but not too busy for everyone to smile and be friendly. Amid all the hustle and bustle on a Friday night, everyone had a smile and all were so very friendly and kind to a young boy who wanted to place his order and wait and watch while his pizzas were made and others ordered before him were built and baked. He said “it was worth the wait”. Delicious Pizza. Excellent Service.
Hugs: To all of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Hugs: Many heartfelt Hugs to the young man who stopped his pick-up on Nov 1 near the corner of Kootenay Dr & 30th Ave to help the elderly lady who had fallen on the bike path (with her walker). I ended up in the hospital but am on the mend now. Who knows what could have happened if not for your kindness and selfless actions. Many thanks and Hugs again from a grateful Senior. Slugs: To people that let their dogs bark for hours on end. If you aren’t home, and you know you have a barker, maybe keep your dog inside. I have a dog, it barks, but I always run outside and get my dog in once it starts to bark. To hear your poor dog bark and bark and bark, it’s very annoying.

Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list.
