What you need to know for Saturday Election 2014: Plenty of civic voting information at your fingertips John McKinley

n 2011, just 33 % of eligible voters cast a ballot in the Duncan election. In North Cowichan, the percentage was 32. It remains to be seen if that level of apathy will be repeated in Saturday’s civic election. Between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., voters will be deciding who will be leading the City of Duncan, the Municipality of North Cowichan, the Cowichan Valley School District and the Cowichan Valley Regional District for the next four years. There you will find links to candidate profiles submitted in their own words, as well as all the election news coverage leading to the vote. Voters are also being asked their opinions on whether to study a boundary adjustment for Duncan and North Cowichan, and whether to fund the Cowichan Sportsplex. North Cowichan residents can vote at the Chemainus Seniors Drop-In Centre; Crofton Elementary School; North Cowichan Municipal Hall; Cowichan Secondary School’s Quamichan campus; École Mt. Prevost Elementary; and Maple Bay Elementary School. Duncan voters go to the Duncan Fire Hall at 468 Duncan St. Rural voters go to the following locations: Area A: George Bonner Elementary School, 3060 Cobble Hill Rd., Mill Bay Area B: Shawnigan Lake Community Centre, 2804 Shawnigan Lake Rd. Area C: Cobble Hill Hall, 3550 Watson Rd. Area D: Bench Elementary School, 1501 Cowichan Bay Rd. Area E: Eagles Hall, 2965 Jacob Rd. Area G: Chemainus Elementary School, 3172 Garner St. Non-registered resident voters can vote if they bring two pieces of identification to the polls that prove both residency and identity. Expect election results to be posted at cowichannewsleader.com about an hour after the polls close tomorrow.

A
truck driver wanted by police after Monday’s Malahat injury collision has been identified. “The 26-year-old man from Crofton is alleged to have left the scene of a crash in which the occupant of a second involved vehicle — a 64-year-old woman from Mill Bay — was injured,” Shawnigan Lake RCMP’s release says. “The man is now under investigation for failing to remain at the scene of this collision. This investigation is ongoing.”

The driver of this SUV suffered injuries after Monday’s Malahat roll-over collision with a small truck whose driver allegedly fled the scene. As charges have yet to be laid, Investigators thanked the public the suspect’s identity was not and media for assistance in the released. investigation.

The Malahat Drive wreck happened at about 10:25 a.m. Shawnigan Lake RCMP were called to the single-vehicle rollover where a small truck entered the highway and allegedly collided with a southbound SUV. That hit caused the SUV to veer across two northbound lanes of traffic, and roll down an embankment, police say in an earlier release. Paramedics and Malahat volunteer firefighters attended the scene to help rescue the SUV’s lone occupant. The female driver was taken to Victoria General Hospital with undetermined injuries, RCMP said.
