A red-tailed hawk named Hook soars just over the heads of West Park Middle School students during an assembly on Wednesday afternoon. The Earth Rangers paid a visit to the school. They brought along with them the hawk, an armadillo, an Argentine black and white tegu and a peregrine falcon much to the delight of the students. The Earth Rangers are touring Alberta and will be visiting Red Deer area schools for the next week and a half bringing their message of wildlife conservation to as many young students as possible. Using live animals the Earth Rangers teach students about the issues facing Canadian wildlife.
Prentice wants to rebuild trust in government BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF
LEADER’S DINNER
In the midst of trying to rebuild Alberta’s trust in the Progressive Conservatives, Premier Jim Prentice vowed a no nonsense and common sense government as he delivered his speech at the Leader’s Dinner. Postponing the originally planned October dinner to run in a byelection, Prentice headlined the annual leader’s dinner at the Sheraton Wednesday evening. Speaking to the 450 or so in attendance, Prentice
focused on re-building trust in government and how he intended to do so through good policy and good government. But above all he spoke of the party will not take constituency for granted. He conceded that oil prices below $80 a barrel have financial implications that Albertan’s need to be cautious and prudent about.

When the wind blows hard, golfers anticipate high scores and sailors brace for high waves. Tim Weis counts on low electricity prices. The Alberta director for the Canadian Wind Energy Association said gusty conditions mean the province’s wind turbines are producing a surge of power for Alberta’s electrical grid that drives prices down. “When it’s windy, the whole market comes down.” Fossil fuel generators can vary production in response to such price fluctuations, reducing their fuel costs in the process. Wind generators have no such flexibility. Another challenge facing the wind energy industry in Alberta’s deregulated electricity market is the uncertainty of future prices. That makes it tough to raise the capital to develop wind farms. “It’s hard to get that 20-year loan form the banks, given the volatility we’ve seen,” said Weis.

GUILBAULT TRIAL
Father sought help for son just days before murder BY BRENDA KOSSOWAN ADVOCATE STAFF A former Red Deer city councillor who was beaten to death by his own son had reached out for help just days before the attack. On the morning of Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, Timothy Bruce Guilbault, 58, drove from his home in Calgary to a family cabin west of Bowden to meet his son, Aaron Timothy Guilbault. Tim Guilbault’s body was found two days later, inside the entry to the cabin. His son, now 33, was arrested that same day and is now on trial for seconddegree murder before Justice Monica Bast in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench. The question before the court is not whether Aaron Guilbault killed his father, but whether he can be held criminally responsible for his actions, says defence counsel Patty MacNaughton. She opened her case on Wednesday morning with expert testimony from forensic psychiatrist Sergio Santana, who works at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre and lectures in psychiatry at the University of Calgary. Santana assessed the accused man twice in 2013, to determine whether he was fit to stand trial and again to determine if he suffered from a mental disorder that would render him not criminally responsible for his actions. Santana testified that Timothy Guilbault wrote him a letter seeking help for his son, dated Oct. 29, 2012. Santana said Timothy and other members of the Guilbault family had concerns about Aaron’s mental health, noting a pattern of psychosis that had developed over the previous two years. However, Santana said he could take no action because the hospital where he works deals strictly with assessment and treatment of people referred through the justice system.
