Climate activist Laura Sacks was in New York City last month at one of the largest climate change protests in history.

More than 400,000 people turned out for the march at the end of September, which was days before leaders debated environmental action at the United Nations climate summit. Sacks said she was thrilled to participate in the global day of action, which included high-profile environmentalists including Bill McKibben, Leonardo Dicaprio and Jane Goodall.

“I came back energized and optimistic that we can make a difference. People can stand up, direct and lead our politicians and other people making decisions about our future,” said Sacks.

“Sometimes looking at the whole climate issue can be pretty despairing.

Sacks, a Nelson resident, is a volunteer member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby. She founded the Nelson chapter this year. The organization, which originated in the US, has over 7,000 volunteers in North America and 40 active chapters in Canada.

The organization is currently advocating for a carbon fee and dividend system that could win bi-partisan support.

Sacks said it will take average citizens like herself getting involved if Canadians have any hope to see a major change in climate change policy.

“We are supposed to be what the government is made up of. We’re not just lobbying our politicians, we’re trying to empower people to get involved in the political process.”

Sacks said the New York march was exhausting, but fun.

The parade was orig-

inally scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., but didn’t get started until 2 p.m. and didn’t reach the route along Colombus Circle until mid-afternoon.

“Towards the end we were feeling pretty tired. I was marching with my brother next to this great brass band, and people on the sides of the streets were dancing.

We were just boogying along.”

Unfortunately, she didn’t see any celebrities.

“My Mom was asking about that.

Did you see Leo? No, unfortunately.”

Renaming Grand Forks 2014 SLED CLEARANCE proved impossible GreG Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Seventy-sixth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week we looked at how Grand Forks got its name. In 1901, it was expected to be changed after Grand Forks and Columbia, its rival city to the west, agreed to amalgamate.

“The citizens of Grand Forks felt that life would be burdensome if the consolidated town’s name was made Columbia, and Columbia residents would prefer to remain in single blessedness to residing in a municipality called Grand Forks,” the Nelson Miner wrote.

The Grand Forks Gazette, naturally, wanted to keep it as Grand Forks and said so. This brought an anonymous letter from someone who had given the matter much thought.

The writer agreed the name should not be changed, as it was “well grounded.”

“It has required a great deal of effort to make the city well known, and that effort should not be wasted, if the waste can

be avoided. Moreover, the use of the word ‘Grand’ gives a dignity to the name, which is wanting in the names of many places. Also, the name is descriptive of the place, and very appropriate on that account.”

However, if a name change was unavoidable, the writer had a few suggestions: Piedmont, Toyebee (supposedly a First Nations name for the Kettle River), Rocklyn, Scardale, Belleview, Bona Vista, Belvedere, Monte Carlo, Melrose, Wawaosh, Wascana, Henselwood, Colonna, Granby (after the company that built the smelter), Grandola, Goldalia, and Ystradyfodwg (after a Welsh parish).

None of those ideas made the final cut, however. When a vote was held that August, the choices were Miner, Empire, and Amalga. The results revealed a further split between Grand Forks and Columbia residents: Grand Forks voted 81 for Miner, 58 for Empire, and 23 for Amalga, while Columbia had the opposite feelings: 27 for Amalga, 24 for Empire, and 10 for Miner.

Miner prevailed with a majority of nine. (Miner wasn’t chosen for the profession, but rather for Granby company president S.H. Miner.)

Yet that still didn’t settle matter.

In February 1902, a delegation from the Grand Forks board of trade appeared before city council, imploring them to keep the name Grand Forks. William Spier made a short speech, declaring himself “heartily in favour” of the idea, while an alderman started a petition to stick with Grand Forks, “which promises to be the most liberally signed petition that was ever circulated in our city.”

The last-minute lobbying worked. When amalgamation took effect January 1, 1903, the new city was called Grand Forks.

• A clarification and correction to an earlier installment about Gloster City: the north fork of the Kettle River is much better known as the Granby River, after the above-mentioned Granby company of Granby, Que. In any case, Gloster was actually on Burrell Creek.

Local photographer wins provincial contest

Salmo wildlife photographer Monte Comeau won the Wild Settings category in the BCSPCA’s annual Wildlife-In Focus photography contest. The winning photo was taken this past June on Lac La Jeune, just outside Kamloops, after floating on the lake in a kayak with camera equipment. Comeau says taking the Photo by Monte Comeau photos from the water gives him a unique angle for his shots.

Sitting silently in a kayak with a camera and a lot of patience has led to an award for Salmo photographer Monte Comeau.

On June 14, while floating on Lac Le Jeune near Kamloops, Comeau snapped an ethereal shot of a baby Loon hitching a ride on its mother’s back. The shot went on to win a top spot in the BCSPCA annual Wildlife-In-Focus photography contest.

Out of more than 650 photos submitted for consideration, Comeau got first place in the Wild Settings category.

The Salmo-resident says capturing a moment like that requires some waiting and a knowledge of bird behaviours.

“I took the shot from the kayak,” he said. “I find that you can slowly drift up close to wild birds with

a kayak as long as you stay out of their comfort zone. Over the years, I have learned that approaching from the water side is much easier that approaching from land. They do not seem to think you are a predator as much as when you are on land.”

Comeau says that birds are creatures of habit, more so than people may think, making his photo-taking a bit easier.

“I spend a great deal of time on the water in search of wild birds,” he said. “I get to know where they hang out, so to speak. They are often very predictable. I find Eagles and Osprey landing on the same branches at the same time of day throughout the summer.”

Spending so much time on the water gives Comeau a unique angle when it comes to capturing images of birds in their natural habitats.

“If you look at the Loon images in particular, you will see how I am getting a very low point of view,” he said, adding that other photographers might think he is a bit crazy for lugging all that camera equipment out onto the water. “This is because I am right down on the same level as they are. In my opinion, this gives the image a much different and pleasing look.

Many of my fellow nature photographers... consider me a bit crazy for taking thousands of dollars of gear out in a kayak, but then, they don’t get the shots I do.”

Comeau, for most of his photo-taking expeditions, likes to keep it local, with a surprising number of species just a short distance away.

“I personally love to share with others what I see when out exploring the small lakes in our region,” he said. “We have a small lake near Sal-

mo called Erie Lake. I have documented over 70 bird species and photographed more than 60 species on this tiny lake alone. I usually post the images on Facebook and many people are in awe and disbelief at just how many birds frequent the tiny lake in our backyard.”

As the winner of the Wild Settings category, Comeau will see his photograph in the BC SPCA’s spring edition of Animal Sense magazine, as well as a prize pack with gifts from Broadway Camera, a magazine subscription and more.

The amateur photographer has been taking pictures for years, and has some advice for aspiring wildlife photographers.

“Patience,” he said.

“Get out and find the creatures and birds, they rarely come and find you.”

Equipment is a big part of photography,

but Comeau says not to let a lack of equipment stop a future photographer.

“Equipment is important for the genre of photography,” he said. “Point and shoot cameras simply will not work well, and low-end DSLRs with slow lenses will struggle.

Super telephoto lenses and cameras with fast frame rates are essential to getting quality images. Having said that, do not let it stop you from

getting out there and taking pictures of wildlife. I am dedicated to this hobby and have invested in good gear. If I did not have it, I would still be out

taking pictures.”

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products.

This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada.

Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts.

In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager.

Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe.

Motoring Maui: The Bliss and the Bad

Lahaina, Maui - Locals call it the “Maui Merge.”

It’s enough to take a blissfully mellow tourist and perhaps get them as heated as their freshly acquired crimson sunburn.

It’s a merge that doesn’t take place within the lines of an ending lane, as one would imagine. Somehow that merge extends onto the shoulder and beyond. Watch out for the cyclist and the stray dog!

It’s almost like a game, I’m told, to see how far ahead of

all the other cars you can get.

As I observe this type of manouevre in action from a Ford Escape rental vehicle, I can’t help but chuckle to myself. I guess some things stay the same no matter what kind of paradise you’re driving in.

But it’s not all bad, right?

The Escape is roomy, though not that roomy. But when a chronic noise came from the brakes, the minivan was out of commission. Luckily for only a few hours, chaos could have ensued.

Being the car person, I accompanied her to a local shop.

Not only did her car get fixed very quickly, it gave insight into the local racing scene. Yes, there’s one on Maui and it’s probably not what you would have expected.

A “family” reunion just happened to be taking place on one of Hawaii’s eight islands, which gave me a perfect excuse to beat the fall blah’s and grey skies that this time of year blesses us with. A five-speed automatic transmission was a popular option, An automatic model also comes with steering wheel mounted paddle-shift (manual) controls. The Acura CSX was made in Canada and only sold in Canada. Essentially it’s a sportier and more luxurious Honda Civic as it shares most major parts, other than engines. So, an owner not only gets the renowned reliability, fuel efficiency and functionality of a Civic, but also a higher level of performance and luxury ... very nice!

First released for the 2006 model year, CSX came with a 2.0-litre four-cylin-

der engine that can also be found in an Acura RSX, with slightly different tuning. A suspension upgrade also gives CSX better handling than a Civic and it originally came in Touring and Premium (with leather upholstery, Xenon headlights and a power sunroof) trim levels.

A new more performance oriented version called the Type-S replaced Premium for the 2007 model year. The standard 2.0-litre engine can produce 155 horsepower, but the 2.0-litre in a Type-S version can churn-out 197 horsepower.

An Acura made in Canada,just for Canada 17-inch wheels, fog lights and USB port for audio players all became standard equipment. The CSX Type-S became the CSX i-Tech (and came with xenon headlights, a navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity) for the 2011 model year, its final year of production.

A used CSX doesn’t cost too much more than a topline Civic. Not only do you get more content and performance, Acura models also come with a longer warranty than Honda. Full coverage is for 4 years or 80,000 km, compared to 3 years/60,000 km from Honda.

You won’t find ratings for an Acura CSX in Consumer Reports or the results of any US crash testing.

However, it’s safe to assume that it would achieve similar results to the Honda Civic, which does spectacularly well in owner survey ratings and also receives top ratings occupant protection in a collision.

Used prices may be on the high side, but if you like the Honda Civic, yet desire a little extra pampering and performance, take a look and a drive in used Acura CSX. continued on page A11

2011: There’s an increased risk of fuel leakage in a roll-over crash due to a

Hard driven to deflate a puncture resistant tire

The rush of air escaping a tire is not a sound one hopes to hear deep in the outback.

According to a tire industry study, 84 percent of tire failures incurred offroad are due to sidewall puncture, often rendering tires irreparable. BF Goodrich has done something about this deflating fact.

High in Canada’s rugged Rocky Mountains is where they chose to launch their

revised KO line of all-terrain tires. Termed “KO2,” the new boots bring forth many improvements to a tire already considered by many in the off-roading community to be the benchmark. That reputation was earned through a longstanding commitment to off-road racing and motorsports – winning the Baja 1000 more than all other tire manufacturers combined – and its advances in tire technology since introducing the

first all-terrain tire back in 1976.

The tire manufacturer claims that the KO2 sidewall is 20 percent stronger than the original KO tire, and incorporates an advanced deflection system designed to prevent protruding objects, such as pointy branches, from snagging and splitting the sidewall.

A handful of crusty auto journalists, more used to testing cars rather than tires, ventured to Lake Lou-

ise in the Rockies to put the tires through a reality test.

BF Goodrich supplied a series of off-road exercises in which we pushed the limits of the KO2s, all of which were 20-inch 55-series tires shod upon new Chevrolet Silverado 4X4 pickups. It’s important to note that these weren’t extra-large off-road tires, they were typical replacements.

The highway portion of our drive delivered a pleasant surprise; the KO2s produced much less road noise than expected given their heavy lug-based tread

pattern. While likely not as quiet as the original-equipment tires on Chevy’s latest Silverado, their whine was modest and unobtrusive.

Forty minutes after departing the majesty of Lake Louise and its aqua-blue waters, we exited Banff National Park and headed for private testing lands.

Moving from tarmac, we encountered just about every conceivable surface one might face during an off-road excursion.

Despite my best effort to

burrow the KO2s deep into a mud pit, the putty-like ooze never overwhelmed them. With a little throttle prodding, the tires managed to clear away the earthen oatmeal, finding footing enough to pull 5,500 pounds of truck out of the quagmire with ease.

Other testing locales included a rock crawl, steep ascents/descents, and a log pit with sharp upward-pointing knots. The latter reputed for inflicting sudden death on typical

Kootenay Kids hosts families with Down Syndrome

November 1 through 7 was National Down Syndrome Awareness Week information about the development of their children.

Birk said when her daughter was born, she was given a referral to Kootenay Kids. She said within a week the organization was in contact with information for the new parents.

“They really are a fantastic group of people who just want to help these kids,” said Birk.
