ELECTOR REGISTRATION AND ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS Registration of all electors will take place at the time of voting.

In order to vote, an elector must be eligible either as a Resident Elector or a Non-Resident Property Elector.

1. VOTER PROOF OF IDENTITY: Resident and Non-Resident Property Electors will be required to produce two (2) documents, at least one (1) of which must contain the applicants signature, providing evidence of their identity and place of residency.

For example, any two (2) of the following will be acceptable: • a BC drivers license; • a BC identification card issued by the motor vehicle office; • an owner’s certificate of insurance and vehicle license issued by ICBC; • a BC care card or gold care card; • a Social Insurance card; • a Native Status Card issued by the Department of Indian Affairs; • a citizenship card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada; • a real property tax notice; • a credit card or debit card, or • a utility bill.

Non-Resident Property Electors must also produce the following documentation evidencing proof of ownership of property and written consent of other property owners (if any): 1. Proof of Ownership: state of title certificate, registered agreement for sale, latest property tax notice, or latest property assessment notice 2. Consent: written consent of a majority of the property owners if there is more than one owner (forms available at www.tnrd.ca) that they are entitled to register the jointly owned property. Lt. Governor joins call to adopt in B.C.

VICTORIA – Lt. Governor Judith Guichon is sharing her own experience as an adoptive parent to encourage people to invite the 1,000 young people waiting to join a family in B.C. At an event at the B.C. legislature to declare November Adoption Month, Guichon described her experience adopting four children to live at her Nicola Valley ranch starting in the late 1970s.

The first two children were infants, and in 1989 a relative called and asked if Guichon and her first husband would add a brother and sister who were then aged three and five.

Their mother had two older twin boys and was “struggling on her own.

“Having always wanted a large family and having lots of resources such as wide open spaces to offer, we didn’t hesitate to say yes,” Guichon said.

“I know that we gave these children a great home, and as a mother

I worked to take care of them.

“What I never knew is how much they would take care of me. You see, when my children were 20, 16, 15 and 13, we lost their father in an accident.

“For a short time after the accident, we were all in survival mode. To say that I would not have endured without my children is not overstating the case.”

Stephanie Cadieux and Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond issued a joint statement, noting that 1,300 adoption placements have been found in the past five years. But there are 1,000 more children and teens who are still waiting.

“The reality is that many of the young people in care who are waiting for adoption are school age,” they said.

“They may be siblings

who need to stay together. Some may have special placement needs due to difficult early childhood experiences, prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs, learning delays or other developmental challenges.”

Cadieux launched a social media campaign for November to promote adoption, including a website at www.1000familiesbc. com with adoptive family profiles and videos.

Too many hunters driving with loaded guns

By Cam Fortems Kamloops This Week A recent enforcement campaign by conservation officers found an alarming number of hunters driving with loaded firearms inside their vehicles.

Kevin Van Damme, a conservation officer based in Kamloops, said five hunters were caught in the area this month driving with loaded rifles — one of which had the safety off.

Van Damme said a loaded gun presents a danger to the hunter, his companion and the enforcement officer as drivers typically scramble to unload the gun after being pulled over.

Van Damme acknowledged hunters driving with loaded guns may be doing so in order to get off a quick shot.

However, he added, rules are also in place regarding shooting in proximity to maintained roads and homes.

The Conservation Officer Service levied tickets for the offences.

Van Damme also said enforcement has turned up instances of hunters falsifying tag information, either claiming a deer was taken by a partner or that it was shot in another region.

That tactic is designed to allow for the killing of two deer this season.

Such offences can result in seizure of firearms and charges in provincial court.

“In the Interior, there’s a large number of mule-deer days,” Van Damme said.

“There’s a lot of pressure on these animals.”

Off-road vehicle registration starts in B.C. next Monday for backcountry users North Thompson Star/Journal Safe and responsible use of B.C.’s backcountry will get a boost on Monday, Nov. 17, with the upcoming launch of the registration system for off-road vehicles, as well as increases to safe access for highway crossings for recreational off road vehicles.

To provide plenty of notice and allow for a smooth transition, the new registration system is currently voluntary for operation on Crown land, but will become mandatory on June 1, 2015.

The combined cost of the number plate and registration fee is $48.

Effective Nov. 17, off-road vehicle owners can obtain a one-time registration for off-road vehicles that is integrated within the pre- existing structure of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s (ICBC) motor vehicle registry. This will reduce implementation costs and allows off road vehicle owners to register at any of the 900-plus ICBC insurance brokers in the province.

These changes, made possible by the passage of the Off-Road Vehicle Act on March 24, 2014, support the Province’s Off Road Vehicle Management Framework. The framework will help British Columbians get out and enjoy the beauty of the province’s backcountry and ensure offroad vehicles, including snowmobiles, are driven in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

In addition, changes to the Motor Vehicle Act regulations, effective Nov. 17 will allow off-road vehicle operators greater access to highways, including the ability to: * Cross a highway without having to obtain an operation permit if the crossing is controlled by a stop sign or traffic light. * Cross a highway where local police authorize through an operation permit. * Load or unload in a parking lot without an operation permit. * Obtain an operation permit with an extended term of up to two years.

To date, the Off-Road Vehicle Management Framework has been implemented in stages.

How to Improve Life for Rural Canadians Canada Post became a Crown Corporation to improve network services. The Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA) wants to ensure this multi-billion dollar public network remains viable and able to serve the public. We have found a way to make this sustainable.

A recent study shows that nearly half of post offices outside of Canada’s big cities are in communities with no bank or credit union. In those communities that still have a bank or a credit union, many residents have to contend with limited, part-time banking hours. Our survey of Canada’s 3,300 rural post offices: “Why Post Offices should offer banking services” is available for free download at: http://bit.ly/1r8U3fj.

Offering financial services in post offices would create a new revenue stream for Canada Post. Equally important, it would benefit numerous communities in Canada whose residents, in order to get to a bank or credit union, are forced to travel long distances. That costs time and money and stifles economic development. Many other countries similar to Canada, such as the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy and New Zealand, have very successful banking services right in their post offices.

We, at CPAA, believe that our study is significant because of the value of this public asset. Canada Post is uniquely positioned to offer financial services throughout rural Canada. When Canada Post can make more money and offer more services to Canadians who need them, we have a perfect opportunity. Let’s not lose it.

Honour our veterans by voting It’s unfortunate that we don’t spend more time helping our local students explore democracy and the reasons why voting is so important to how we live.

Then, not only would we have young adults voting for their representatives on councils, school boards, regional districts, legislatures and parliaments, but we would have the older adults who’ve never figured out why they should get off their butts and spend 30 minutes to go cast a ballot.

In that way, we have failed to pass on that vital role that makes Canada what it is. We have told them to, but not explained why. We have not passed on the torch.

Interesting that Election Day (Nov. 15) falls shortly after Remembrance Day (Nov. 11) - or it is for now and has been for a while. Local Government Elections after this year will be moved to October.

But for now, we can draw a direct line between going to war against Germany and democracy.

This quote I found from Canadian veteran William F. Starr: “Democracy was threatened in 1939, and there was no question the threat had to be stopped. Any veteran would agree. Since that time, it seems democracy is threatened from time to time, from a variety of sources. These sources are more subtle – an enemy is not clearly defined as it was during the war. The need to defend democracy is just as real now as it was then, perhaps more so. The question is how. As a veteran, I am not in favour of war as a solution. So, how to defend it?

Voting may be the only peaceful option. It is disturbing to see voting so sadly neglected today.”

Let us reflect upon this past Tuesday as we gathered around the Cenotaph - or wherever we were - to honour our veterans and renew our promise to keep democracy alive in Canada.

And let us consider how we can make our towns and cities better places to live by including those who don’t feel included: who feel that nothing will be changed by their vote.

Because all votes count, in ways you may not even realize. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we have so far.

No government protects environment To the editor; Re: Oil protest a slippery slope for cities (B.C. Views, Oct. 7).

Tom Fletcher’s analysis of jurisdiction regarding pipeline expansion and oil distribution in B.C. ignores one important fact. I have one postal address and one primary residence, one planet on which to live.

I also am governed by three political jurisdictions that are supposed to manage “the common good” on behalf of all.

None do so.

I pay taxes and idealize that some official somewhere will handle environmental issues

in sustainable ways.

Not so.

Such leaders are situated within non-government organizations – who also want money. No wonder I am an alienated citizen, disgusted with public sector over-expenditures and irresponsibilities regarding basic survival.

I do vote! And I am delighted that some new faces and names are appearing on ballot lists. My hope is that other voters will listen to these unknown candidates. Somewhere among them are future leaders who will help guide us to a more viable Canada.

Writer advises Barriere property owners to check their zoning To the editor; The new zoning bylaw was adopted by council recently. I checked on the new proposed zoning on my property at the Trade Show at the Barriere booth in the spring.

I have five acres. The TNRD zoning was approximately two acres two family residential, and the three acres C4 (commercial).

The new proposed zoning was to be R1(residential) on the two acres, and C2 (commercial) on the three acres.

I assumed this is what was adopted by council. A friend of mine drew my attention that all of it was adopted as R1.

I knew this was incorrect. I proceeded to the Barriere municipal office to find out that they made a mistake, and now it has to be corrected.

I would advise all property owners to check their zoning. This new zoning bylaw maybe needs to be reviewed to insure there are no other situations like mine.

The water referendum that failed was anoth-

er issue for me. The properties on my block are all on well. There is a newer main on the other side of the street.

I went into the town hall to vote on the referendum and was told I could not vote. I was not on the water map. I posed the question if this passes would I not have the fee levied against my property? The answer was “Yes”. I said, “And I am not allowed to vote!”

The next day I find out that one of my neighbours were allowed to vote . Their situation was the same as mine, on well with the same main across the street.

I called town hall and made a complaint regarding this, and the next thing I know my neighbours receive a call saying their vote did not count.

I could not believe how this situation was handled.I have 26 years municipal experience, and I have to draw into question what has happened in both these cases.

Pick candidates for mineral exploration To the editor; I have read many negative articles of late around mining in B.C. and I want to get my two bits into the discussion.

Geologists, explorers, and developers all know that B.C., which has a land mass larger than Texas, France and Germany combined, is vastly under explored.

To encourage investment and exploration, the provincial government implemented a two-zone system to provide certainty for explorers and promote investment while also protecting parks, ecological reserves, sensitive environmental areas and other potential wilderness tourism areas.

However, a strong sense of NIMBYism and relentless badgering in the media by certain well-funded special interest groups is stifling exploration of potentially rich mineral deposits that could result in foreign investment, economic development, and thousands of jobs for British Columbians.

Even local politicians are getting into the game in the lead up to the municipal elections this month.

However, the concerns expressed by these special interests and politicians are grossly exaggerated and have little or no regard to the

science or the social well-being of communities.

We have to keep in mind that the land area actually impacted by mineral exploration in B.C. is much less than 0.01 per cent of our total land base.

And the actual likelihood that exploration activity will result in a mine, after multiple environmental review and the economics of production are taken into consideration, is minuscule.

Yet the benefits are great and could potentially provide livelihoods for entire communities for generations to come and contribute directly and indirectly to the growth of many, many associated

small businesses. This is good for all taxpayers and even for the many non-profit groups all over B.C. that benefit from the voluntary financial support exploration companies provide.

In this municipal election, I would therefore like to encourage everyone to carefully consider

which candidates for election can best facilitate ongoing mineral exploration activities in B.C., and provide certainty for potential investors, while ensuring that sensitive areas and parks are protected.

We must move forward.

Large pink pumpkin part of illegal dumping Just where Highway 5 turns into four lanes for passing, while traveling south from Barriere to McLure, property owners say they are “...fed up with illegal dumping”.

“Maybe it’s the nice easy pullout there,” said one of the residents, “But they illegally dump on both sides of the highway. The North Thompson Aboriginal Cultural Centre Society (NTACC) has been awarded $120,000 by the National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC), according to NTACC spokesperson Cindy Wilgosh.

“I’m still in shock. After seven years of struggling, here we are,” she said.

“How very exciting is this ... not to mention seeing Clearwater on the map. Yaaaa hoooo!”

According to NAFC, more than 100 letters of intent were evaluated against the program’s terms and conditions. Of these, more than 40 organizations were encouraged to submit full proposals and a subsequent 20 were recommended for consideration and approval by a national adjudication committee.

The committee considered a number of factors in its decision including demographics and population, remoteness, range of services delivered and governance and financial management capacity.

The following 10 organizations will be brought into the network of service delivery under the realigned Urban Aboriginal Strategy: NunatuKavut Community Council Inc. (Labrador City, N.L.); Native Council of Nova Scotia (Truro, N.S.); Native Friendship Centre of Montreal (Que.); Peel Aboriginal Network (Mississauga, Ont.); Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development Inc. Thompson Regional Hospital Board approves 2015 provisional budget North Thompson Star/Journal The Thompson Regional Hospital District Board of Directors has approved the 2015 Provisional Budget.

Total expenditures for 2015 have been budgeted at $34.4 million, which is up approximately $16 million from 2014.

Included in the 2015 expenditures is partial funding for the Clinical Services Building at Royal Inland Hospital along with provisions for capital projects, minor equipment and carry forward projects.

Also included is contribution from a capital reserve of $11 million. The capital reserve balance at the end of the 2015 fiscal year will be $4.2 million.

The 2015 residential tax rate for the TRHD will remain the same as it was in 2014 — $127 for the average house. 2014 will be the last year of increases in taxes as per a three-year strategic direction provided by the board in 2012 to increase taxes by approximately $21 per year for the average house.

The TRHD also approved a bylaw for costsharing ($788,196 of $1,970,490) with Interior Health Authority (IHA) for minor equipment in facilities within Kamloops (RIH), Ashcroft, Barriere, Chase, Clearwater, Lillooet, Logan Lake and Merritt.

Each fall IHA presents a list of minor equipment with which they would like to cost share with the TRHD at 40 per cent.

District of Barriere staff wages lowest in B.C. for similar-sized municipalities

Huntley Cooper was a good hearted, hard working man with so many creative abilities, and is missed very much by the group and the community of Barriere. He was always found working behind the scenes at many of the Thompson Valley Players productions, and he was a key factor in starting the their junior group.

TV Players say, “We congratulate Brittany as our choice for the award and thank her for the amazing job she did this past year working on and off the stage, and for entertaining us with her great singing voice. This talented young lady was also a great mentor to the younger children in their standout performances at the Communities in Bloom Salute to Heritage production this past summer.

A number of questions have been asked this past week regarding the wages being paid by the District of Barriere to staff.

We have investigated what the wages of staff in the municipality are, and how they compare with other municipalities of similar size.

Here are some factual wage comparisons for local government managers in British Columbia.

Barriere’s CAO and finance officers are paid a salary of $90,000 and $68,350.

Clearwater, Ashcroft and Lumby are close at $100,358/$90,000, $103,000/$75,190 and $104,000/$86,275 respectively.

Valemount, with a population of just over 1,000 only pays their CAO $76,132, but they also have a corporate officer, a finance officer and an economic development officer on their management team.

In Barriere the CAO and corporate officer are the same person, one salary. The CAO is also the Subdivision Approving Officer, a position that is apparently often contracted in many smaller municipalities.

We have been told that Barriere’s CAO is also a Registered Professional Planner, and that this can save the municipality a minimum of $5,000 to $30,000 a year in regards to the Zoning Bylaw and other planning documents.

Barriere does not have a paid economic development officer at this time.

On further research it appears that the District of Barriere staff are paid a wage that is at the bottom of the wage scale for local government staff in British Colum-

bia, and they do not currently have any union employees.

We have also been informed that the majority of District staff have certifications that could possibly enable them to seek a higher wage working elsewhere, but most of the staff say they want to work where they live, which is in Barriere.

“Taxpayers in Barriere need to know that we have an incredibly well-educated, experienced and dedicated staff that saves the community thousands of dollars a year in external consultant fees that smaller municipalities usually pay for planners, subdivision approving officers, economic development officers, grant writers, plumbers, tree fallers, etcetera,” stated District of Barriere CAO Colleen Hannigan, “If at all possible, work is assigned internally to save money.”

At the District of Barriere Regular Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the following resolution was brought forward from closed session into Business Arising from Closed Session: “That Council approve a stipend of $13,120 to Nora Johnson, Finance Officer, for her efforts above and beyond her required duties prior to a full time Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) being hired in August 2010 and that the required amount be taken from General Surplus.”

Those who opposed this were: Mayor Humphreys, Councillors Kershaw and Sabyan. In favour were Councillors Ward Stamer, Virginia Smith, Glen Stanley and Pat Paula.

RCMP tightens volunteer security after Ottawa attack Police officers in red serge will also now be armed due to policy change

By Jeff Nagel Black Press Last month’s attacks on Canadian soldiers in Ottawa and Montreal have prompted the RCMP to arm officers who appear in public in red serge and to take extra steps to protect auxiliary constables who volunteer unarmed in the community.

District of Barriere Road Closure Bylaw No. 118 The District of Barriere Council hereby gives notice that it is considering adopting a Bylaw to authorize the closure of a portion of a dedicated highway and dispose of the land identified as cross-hatched on the plan below. This half of the existing 100’ wide highway allowance is not required for road purposes and would be offered for sale at fair market value only to the adjacent property owner in order to correct existing encroachments.

Pursuant to the Community Charter, Council may by bylaw close a portion of a highway to traffic that is vested in the municipality and remove its dedication as a highway.

Prior to the District of Barriere Road Closure Bylaw No. 118 being adopted, public input is being sought by Council. Anyone who believes that their interest in property is affected by the proposed bylaw, shall be afforded a reasonable opportunity to provide input on the proposed bylaw.

Simpcw unveil their new Cenotaph

The ribbon cutting and unveiling of the new Simpcw First Nation Cenotaph, followed by Remembrance Day Ceremonies at Chu Chua took place on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Spiritual Centre. Numerous supporters and dignitaries turned out for the occasion from Barriere and the surrounding area.

“Over 100 people attended the Ribbon Cutting,” reported Louisa Celesta, the organizer and director of the Simpcw Cenotaph Committee who raised funds and created the monument for their community.

“I am so glad so many people came to this wonderful event. It was great to see relatives travel from near and far to witness this special day.”

Celesta noted here is another phase to go in creating the landscaping and the placement of an eagle to finish the project, and she is eagerly looking forward to continuing on towards its completion.

Riders must be a member or join either the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association ($10), or the Barriere and District Riding Club (www.barrieredistrictridingclub.com) for insurance purposes to be able to use the facility. There is a $10 fee charged per rider each Sunday for public riding.

Walk to Little Fort dedicated to grandmother

By Terry Gorley Five years ago, on Sept. 24, after walking from Barriere to Little Fort, I wrote that I had hoped to do it again one day.

However, the time never seemed to be right, until five years later I decided it was time.

I planned to retrace my steps on Saturday, Sept. 27, the day after my 60th birthday. It’s different this time, I’m five years older and I look at it more as a test of endurance than an adventure. I would walking with memories of my grandmother, who lived to be 99 years with a myriad of health issues, partially, if not all due to being diabetic.

She always said, “You take care of it, it won’t take care of you,” and “you gotta keep movin’.”

Just like the last walk, I had no idea what to expect, I decided to take it one step at a time and go as far as my legs would take me.

So, on Sept. 27, I got up at 4:45 a.m. and did my usual morning routine, leaving the house in Barriere at 7:00 a.m.

The morning was a warm 10° degrees celsius with mist on the hills as I set out on my journey.

A much easier start than last time with the much warmer temperature.

“Good Morning Starshine” was playing in my head. Don’t know where it came from, but I liked it. I stopped on this side of the bridge to take my first photographs. Nearing PetersonBetts Road, one of my toes that gives me ongoing problems began to burn and the scent of skunk was in the air. It dissipated only to greet me with a stronger scent a little further on. It too dissipated, then much to my chagrin, my bladder was asking for attention. I kept going … toe burning … bladder calling.

As I passed where the old Chinook Cove Hall had once stood I was grateful for the reminder that 42 years ago we had our wedding reception there. In that moment, I was once again grateful for my husband who has shared his life with me, and who was following in the truck behind me.

Toe burning… bladder calling, then toe burning… bladder bursting… toe burning … bladder bursting. So much for “Good Morning Starshine!”

Like a broken record… toe burning … bladder bursting… toe burning… bladder bursting as I wondered what to do.

Finally, I came to an old driveway long since abandoned. Making my way down the beaten path I found a discreet place to relieve myself.

With a feeling of gratitude and great relief, I was on my way once again.

I stopped to take a couple photos of a dead bat that was lying in the gravel. Not far ahead, a young white tailed buck stopped, looked at me, then crossed the highway in front of an oncoming car. Thankfully, the buck made it to the ditch and up the embankment without incident. In that moment of stillness and serenity I took several pictures of him.

At 9:00 a.m. the sun peeked out from behind the clouds heralding the glorious,

golden autumn day.

I made it to the turn-out at the bottom of the Darfield hill almost an hour and a half after starting out.

I took a photograph and said hello to a couple from Wadman, Alberta. Then to my great surprise and admiration our daughter, Kim, joined me with camera in hand ready to take on the journey with me.

We munched on Nature Valley Granola bars and made our way up the hill. I found the hill more difficult to do this time. My left knee had shooting pains going through a scar from a fall I took when I was about 12-years-old, and my hips had joined in the protest.

We trudged along, took photos and felt disappointment that the bear who had been eating apples on my previous walk wasn’t there again.

Eagles and hawks soared above us, and a bald headed eagle across the field caught our attention. Stopping for a time to take pictures gave us a break, and for a time muscles and feet didn’t complain as much.

There was cooing coming from down by the river that we assumed came from doves. The sound was almost a whisper and added a calmness to the walk.

To our delight at 11:30 a.m. my three nephews honked and waved on their way to Kamloops.

The sun was so warm in places that it felt like we walked in front of a heater. We laughed and joked about “another heat wave.” Falling leaves reminded us that it really was autumn despite the heat.

We took notice of the number of dead and alive black and orange caterpillars and snakes.

As I write this, curiosity had been sparked. Interestingly enough, when I did a search for symbolism of the caterpillar, snake and bat, they all represented transformation and change.

We laughed at the antics of the two lively white tailed deer in the bushes. Following the same curiosity, I found, “By inspiration from the deer’s qualities, you can achieve ambitious goals and tackle difficult situation smoothly with a touch of gentleness and grace.” The quote seemed fitting for our day.

The crowing roosters, barking dogs and those who came to greet us, the cows, horses and the baby goat who cried until his mother was found were reminders of my grandmother and how much she loved her animals and this beautiful valley.

I found a “lucky” loonie lying in the dirt and was reminded that luck is what we make it. It will be a precious souvenir that will always remind me of this day, of love, of support, of family, of gratitude for the little things that may seem insignificant.

Kim ended her walk at Webb Rodd, fourand-a-half hours after starting with me. I continued on and completed my journey to Jim’s Market in Little Fort at 2:30 p.m., seven-and-ahalf hours after leaving home in Barriere.

So the question remains; how did I fare walking the same distance five years later?

As previously mentioned, I found the Darfield hill a little more challenging. There seemed to be more times when my joints and muscles protested and yet, my legs didn’t feel like lead weights and I wasn’t dragging my butt on the final stretch. I wasn’t tired, and could have kept walking had my feet been doing better.

When I finished the first walk, I had no stiffness and only three small blisters. This time, for three days whenever I sat for any length of time my muscles protested.

My toes are still complaining and likely will for a few more days. It took me approximately 15 more minutes this time than last. Overall, my stamina was greater on this walk.

Our walk was dedicated to my grandmother, Ada Mackenzie, who loved life and was active throughout her 99 years. It was about physical, emotional and spiritual health. It was about memories, healing and wellness. It was about testing ourselves and our abilities.

I believe that sometimes as we age, we underestimate ourselves and our abilities.

When my grandmother came to live with us in 2006, just before her 91st birthday she would say, “The doctors tell me to exercise and I tell them I can’t.” When she moved into the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence in the fall of that year, she became more physically active. She began by walking from her #12 suite to the gate, then she would go to the gate and down the side of the building, and finally she was able to go

around the building.

In January, 2008, she moved to the assisted living side. She told me she didn’t like ‘sit and fit’, so she started throwing a small ball. Before long she had a group of her own who played wallyball three times a week. This was throwing, kicking or hitting a beach ball around the group for an hour. She was proud of herself and her group.

She would tell me how much easier it was to move and bend, and of others who were more flexible after playing.

Granny had given up wallyball a few months ago, but still loved playing carpet bowling on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. Despite having poor eyesight due to macular degeneration, she would tell her “horse” where to go and I gather often hit her target.

My grandmother was an inspiration to me and those who knew her.

The importance of depth-of-field Making Pictures A topic that I recently discussed in my classes, that I repeatedly explain to photographers that come to my shop complaining about what they believe are lens focusing problems, and have written more than once about is “depth-of-field”, but it still seems to be an elusive concept for many. However, it is really important and photographers should make the effort to grasp it even though it appears difficult.

I pondered this last Thursday when a local photographer showed me an image she had made during a wedding. She showed it to me proudly and commented that she has chosen that lens because it let in more light when photographing in low light, but complained that the expensive lens she had didn’t seem all that sharp.

The image showed a view of the central aisle of the church with pews left and right, leading up to the bride in the distant centre, approximately 20 feet from where the photographer was standing.

The overall exposure shot at an aperture of f/2.8 was fairly good.

However, what that

photographer saw was the lack of sharpness everywhere, except for the bride standing in the aisle.

The definition of depth-of-field is “that area around the main subject, in front of, and behind it, that is in acceptably sharp focus”. In application the wider the lens’ aperture is set the less will be the depth of field, or that area of sharp focus, around the main subject will be.

Wide aperture lenses are very popular these days and using a lens at a wide aperture like f/2.8 when making a portrait isolates the main subject and produces a soft, out-of-focus background referred to as bokeh by reducing the depth of field.

Bokeh is a pleasing soft blur produced by a wide aperture lens in the out-of-focus area directly behind the subject.

In this instance the photographer was relying on the wide aperture to increase the exposure in limited lighting conditions. That additional light allowed a faster shutterspeed for handholding, but along with the benefit of additional light reaching the camera’s sensor the resulting

John E n ma n effect was to reduce depth of field.

Using that wide aperture created a field of focus in front of the subject of a couple feet and only a bit more behind that would be fine in a portrait, however in that photograph of the church aisle with pews on both sides, that included lots in the foreground and much of the background, looked outof-focus.

Many photographers unwittingly rely too much on their photography equipment to (magically?) make good images, and blame faults in their photographs on that same equipment. Understanding the basic concept of depth-of-field would have made that photograph more to the photographer’s liking.

The smaller the lens aperture is the less depth-of-field. I prefer using a small aperture for scenic photography and, as in this instance, inte-

riors. The answer to that photographer’s low light problem would be to increase the ISO and use a smaller aperture. (I would be surprised to find a modern DSLR that wouldn’t shoot noise free at ISO1600 or even more) Assuming the lens isn’t sharp when the real problem is with photographic technique is expensive if the photographer goes so far as to replacing a lens. My recommendation is to spend time learning the basics of depth of field instead of blaming equipment when problems occur.

A few tips on getting you draft free for winter Keep cold air out and save money on your heating bill Submitted Old Man Winter is headed our way. But don’t worry: plastic insulation and caulks can make it easy to keep the cold, drafty air at bay while saving you money on your monthly heating bill.

Start at the most typical place warm air escapes to the outside: your attic. Making sure you have adequate insulation is very important in keeping your home warm this winter. There are many types of extremely effective plastic foam insulation- spray polyurethane foam, polystyrene and polyiso panels, and more - that can save you a lot of money on those heating bills.

Another area where warm air escapes is your doors and windows.

Just adding a simple bead of silicone plastic caulking around the inside and outside of their frames can greatly reduce the amount of warm air that slips away. Adding plastic foam sealant which expands to fill cracks (available in easy-to-use cans) or plastic weather stripping around the inside of the door frame is yet another way to stop airflow.

If your doors or windows need to be replaced, modern vinyl plastic windows and patio doors are fairly inexpensive and do a great job of keeping cold air outside. Another place where warm air escapes – but one you might not think of – is at your wall switches and outlets. You can purchase inexpensive plastic foam insulation sheets that fit tightly around the hardware when you remove the plate cover.

Another frequently overlooked place to seal up: around your outside water taps. Sealing those gaps with a can of insulating plastic foam sealant can help keep the cold air out of your crawl space or basement.

Also check the spot where your dryer vent exits to the exterior. You can apply more plastic sealant around the vent to ensure that no warm air finds its way out there.

So, as you can see, just a few simple things can really add up to great savings this winter. And let’s not forget, savings in the winter means savings in the summer, too!

Ingredients 2 C. uncooked orzo 1 C. coarsely chopped tomatoes 1 C. peeled, seeded, diced cucumber ½ C. diced yellow or orange pepper ½ C. chopped green onions ½ C. frozen green peas, thawed ½ C. crumbled feta cheese ¼ C. chopped black olives ¼ tsp. black pepper Dressing: 1/3 C. Italian dressing 2 tsp. honey

1 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar Instructions: Whisk together, set aside. Cook orzo according to package instructions.

Drain. Rinse with cold water and drain again. Mix orzo and other ingredients in a large bowl. Add dressing and toss to coat salad. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight for best flavour.

Always in need of more food Submitted The Wikipedia definition of a food bank is: “A nonprofit, charitable organization that distributes food to those having difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger.”

Well, Hallowe’en is over and according to the stores and advertisements, Christmas Season is upon us. To some of us, this can include a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings, but alas, not all of us are in a position to do this on our own, we need a helping hand.

This is where the Barriere and District Food Bank Society (BDFBS) can help.

We are now accepting applications for Christmas Hampers and ordering can be done by phone until Dec. 1. Please leave your name and phone number and one of our office staff will call you back and confirm your order. The hampers will be available for pickup or delivery on Dec. 17.

The BDFBS is open each Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 12 noon for food distribution, but phone messages are retrieved periodically throughout the week.

For those unable to pick up their orders in person, delivery can be arranged. If you are phoning in an order for delivery, please do so before 10 a.m. as after that time we are extremely busy filling pick up orders.

The McLure Volunteer Fire Department and Recreation Association recently held their annual General Meeting with 11 members present.

The annual election of officers resulted in the entire board being voted in by acclamation.

McLure Fire Chief Noel Johnson reported that the annual community Hallowe’en party was quiet, and had spectacular fireworks.

Guest Speaker for the AGM was Thompson Nicola Regional District Area ‘P’ director, John Sternig, who presented a safety report on railway crossings. Sternig also noted that the upcoming TNRD elections will be held Nov. 15, with the area’s polling station at Pat Brown’s house on Pine Grove Road in McLure - signs will be up.

A paint party will be held on Jan. 17, 2015, at 8 a.m. upstairs in the McLure Fire Hall.

The next meeting of the Association will be on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, 7:30 p.m., at the McLure Cafe.

According to “Hunger Count 2014”, in March of 2014, the number of people who received food from a food bank in British Columbia was just short of 98,000 of which 30.8 per cent were children. Looking at these figures you can see why, as an organization, we are always in need of more food.

Teenagers, prayer and my place in the universe I am the father of two teenagers. That means that no matter what I say or do, no matter how wonderful, brilliant or inspired it may be, it will almost always be ignored, rejected, or written off.

It is not uncommon for my children to respond to my requests with grumbles, rolled eyes, or the ever popular question, “Why?” I love my children dearly, but they are in that part of life where they are trying to figure out who they are, where they fit in, and how they will be in the world.

An important part of forming their individual identity is to differentiate from their parents, to do things and think things not quite like the way they have always been taught.

It is a good and necessary thing, I know - psychologists have long said so - and for the most part I celebrate it, but when I have to explain every little thing and can never ever be given the ben-

Again, I love my children, and for the most part they are absolutely wonderful, but every once in a while couldn’t they be just a little less like teenager-ish?

As a parent of teenagers, I have learned to pick my battles. I won’t get everything my way, so which issues are important enough for me to dig my heels in and insist on it being my way?

One of those things has been saying grace before meals. It’s a small thing but it is important in my eyes.

I don’t insist on praying before meals in a restaurant, I don’t feel it is necessary to pray before having a snack. But when we are at home, sitting down at the table together for a

meal, I do insist on saying a brief prayer of thanks before beginning.

My reasons are quite simple. It’s not because asking a blessing on the food somehow changes the nature of the food, makes it better or healthier or “holy” or whatever. It has more to do with recognizing and acknowledging the God’s presence in our lives and our presence in God’s world.

By pausing to give thanks to God for the meal we are about to eat, we become conscious of that which exists beyond us and it connects us to the larger reality of God and others in our world.

We are just one small part of the universe and although we have an important part to play, but we are not the end all and be all; there is more than just us.

Pausing to pray before a meal helps to give me perspective. So much has gone into bringing this food to this

table, so many have been involved, from the ones who grew and raised it, to the ones who packaged it, to the ones who marketed and sold it, to the ones who prepared it. And through it all, there is God, who gives life to the world and everything and everyone in it.

We are all connected. And saying grace before a meals helps me to remember that and keep me in my proper place.

I am part of a larger reality, I am a part of that which God has willed and created.

I am not the one ultimately in control, there are forces beyond me and my powers at play in the world I live in.

Saying grace before meals fills me with awe and humbles me. Even more than having teenagers.
