The elementary curriculum includes studying the different levels of government and the local municipal election campaign has given elementary school teachers an opportunity to give their students some hands-on training in democracy. “It is great that this is happening right now in our backyard,” said Greenwood Elementary teacher Jennifer Eaton. “We talked about all of the different levels of government, but we are focussing on local because we can right now.” As part of that process the Grade 4 to 7 students at Greenwood Elementary and the Grade 6-7 kids from West Boundary hosted an all candidates forum last week. Politicians who attended the event were Greenwood mayoral incumbent Nipper Kettle and challengers Ed Smith and Barry Noll. The five candidates for Greenwood council were also there: incumbents Darla Ashton, Colleen Lang, and
Lest we forget Marge Henschel has served as the Silver Cross Mother at the Greenwood Cenotaph for a number of years. The 92-year-old mother lost family members in the war. She said when her cousin was in Holland he sent a box of tulip bulbs home, with a note that explained hunger had driven the people there to eat tulip bulbs to survive. Henschel said she used to take part in the colour party at Remembrance ceremonies in Wildwood, Alberta.

Lee Cudworth; along with first-time candidates Nola Tutti and Christopher Yates. Vicki Gee also attended—the only Area E candidate to make the forum. So did Cathy Riddle who has retained her seat as a school trustee by acclamation. The students had prepared questions before the session and Principal Brian Foy acted as moderator.
The students were encouraged to listen carefully to the statements of the candidates and try to pick out their campaign slogans and key messages. The questions were well thought out too—covering everything from the possibility of having a BMX track in Greenwood to how to deal with the high levels of poverty in the area.

The candidates were all very impressed with the two-hour session; somewhat noteworthy in that it was twice as long as the other forums that were held in the community for the adults. The students will be given an opportunity to cast their own votes for the candidate(s) they think would best represent them in a school election this week

Thursday, November 13, 2014 Boundary Creek Times Area E Rural Director incumbent Bill Baird (left) speaks at the Rock Creek all candidates forum as rivals Bill Bosovich and Vicki Gee look on. Moderator Terry Keough sits at the end of the table.

Cold Feet? Three vie for Area E The three candidates running to represent Area E of Regional District of Kootenay Boundary for the next four years had three opportunities to get their message out to the voters in all candidate forums. The first was at Big White on Oct. 22. The second in Rock Creek on Nov. 2 and the third was in Beaverdell on Nov. 6. Incumbent Bill Baird, who has held the position for the past 22 years, is recuperating from surgery and was able to attend only the Rock Creek forum on Nov. 2. Baird called the Kettle River Management Plan, “the most important project I have ever been involved in and I would like to be involved with the implementation.” Candidate Vicki Gee identified economic development and provision of services as her top priorities. “We need to think beyond resource based industries and we can’t wait for the next big industry to move into our area,” Gee told the Rock Creek forum. “We already have a big industry and that’s tourism. In regard to services it is not just a matter of attracting people to the area we need to keep people in the area, that applies to both our youth and our seniors. When we look at the Vital Signs Survey that shows that 33 per cent of residents in the Boundary have low-income households that’s double the province and double Canada and it’s 20 per cent in Grand Forks. It is a pretty big issue here.” Bill Bosovich also identified economic development – specifically small business development as the way forward. He said he would like to see tax incentive programs that would encourage small business. Gee pledged to look for opportunities to share economic development dollars within the communities and to communicate with people who are doing things on the ground. Bosovich suggested looking at underdeveloped agricultural land and attracting industry such as a small pellet plant. He said small businesses each with two or three employees can
add up. Baird offered to attract new small companies, to lobby to make economic development easier at the provincial level and to work toward anther, larger community forest. Other topics that were thrown at the candidates included their vision of how to improve communication with constituents, library services, their priorities for environmental and wilderness issues and zoning. In regard to zoning Baird said that no politician would force something onto the voters. He said the parts of Area that have zoning were communities that asked for it. Bosovich said he was generally not in favour of zoning, but could see the case for it in residential areas. Gee stated that zoning and planning are not black and white issues; that they need to be done community-by-community rather than across the entire area. Seven Beaverdell residents turned out for their forum on Nov. 6. Many of the same questions came up again—improving communication with residents. Resident Kate Crest asked what role the regional district might play in getting a provincial park or campsite in the area since Beaverdell is the gateway to the Boundary. She said it would provide summer employment and high school credits for the students. “People need a purpose to stop,” she said. It was pointed out that there are some 18 lakes within an hour of Beaverdell town that could be promoted. Unsightly premises that pose a fire hazard was raised as another concern by Beaverdell residents. They were also concerned about the possibility of dams going in on local creeks to hold the water back. “We need the freshet to clean river and streams in the spring,” said resident Vicky Tomlinson.
TGIS puts out housing survey In 2011, more than 30 per cent of the population in Greenwood was 65 years of age or older, nearly double the provincial average of 16 per cent. Many seniors would like to stay in their home community as they age but cannot do so if there is no suitable seniors’ housing; many residents have aging parents or relatives living in other parts of the province who would consider moving to Greenwood if seniors’ housing were available, maintains The Greenwood Improvement Society (TGIS). TGIS has obtained funding from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to conduct a feasibility study regarding building a seniors’ housing complex in Greenwood. Over the next few weeks, TGIS will be conducting a
housing/demographic survey in the Greenwood area. The findings of the survey will help TGIS decide if it is feasible to build such a complex and, if so, how many units should be built and what services should be provided. Surveys will be delivered to mailboxes this week or can be obtained by calling Fred Marshall at 250-445-6496 or Art Mudrie at 250-445-6631. TGIS wants to hear from all residents and especially from seniors aged 65 and older and from residents who have aging parents or other relatives who would move to a seniors’ housing complex in Greenwood if one were available. Take the time to complete the surveys and return them in the self-addressed and stamped envelope, which will be included in the survey package.

Attention hunters, firewood cutters, and off-road vehicle users. Please note this safety bulletin from Interfor Grand Forks Woodlands Operations regarding public traffic on Resource Roads in the Boundary Region. Please take great care when travelling on resource roads where active log hauling is taking place. These roads are “radio-assisted”, meaning that two way radios are used to assist in traffic control. Watch for signs indicating that active hauling is in progress and drive with extra caution on these roads, being sure to travel on the right side of the road. Yield to oncoming industrial traffic. If you have a two way radio, monitor the posted radio frequency, and follow directions outlined on the “haul road protocol” signs that are located at the start of the road. If you are uncertain of the procedure, ask for an explanation of the radio protocol and for assistance on how best to proceed. Industrial users are very concerned with public safety and will be glad to help you travel safely. Please observe signs indicating “active logging” or “active worksites”, and do not enter these areas. A very important issue locally A BCGEU report released last week shows that we are failing B.C.’s children. “B.C.’s child welfare system is falling apart,” says the BC Government Employees Union website (www. bcgeu.ca/choose-children). “Frontline workers can’t always get to those who most urgently need help. They are buried under massive caseloads, severe staffing shortages and a complete lack of resources. The situation is endemic, and putting vulnerable children, youth and families at risk.” The BCGEU report, Choose Children, is based on 3,418 individual surveys and face-to -ace meetings with 412 front-line workers in 14 communities across British Columbia. It reveals issues putting children at risk including chronic understaffing, serious caseload and workload management problems, and an expensive computer system wracked by malfunctions. Doug Donaldson, New Democrat spokesperson for children and family development says the Liberals are failing to prioritize the safety and well-being of British Columbia’s most vulnerable children. More than $44 million has been stripped from the Ministry of Children and Family Development over the last six years, despite the number of children requiring services increasing, meaning there are fewer front-line staff doing more work. As one team lead in the Interior said in the report, “we don’t know what we don’t know, and someone’s going to get hurt or die.” Children’s Minister Stephanie Cadieux responded by announcing that 70 temporary child-welfare staff will be hired full time. This obviously provides no immediate relief to the situation. Simply changing a front line worker from a temporary to a full time employee does nothing to alleviate the shortage of staff. With income levels in the Boundary as low as they are, this is a very important issue locally.

The community association received a grant for $25,000, $8,600 in donations and put in $53,000 of their own toward the project. Dalziel explained that, as landlord for the building, the city is liable for $20,000 in maintenance and repairs (electrical upgrades $9,000, insulation and structural work $5,000 and plumbing $6,000). He told council that these costs should be borne by the City of Greenwood and are eligible under the guidelines of the Gas Tax Fund. After the city contributes its $20,000 portion as landlord a shortfall of $8,400 will remain. Dalziel recommended that the city contribute an additional $7,500, for a total of $27,500 coming from the gas tax fund account. Council agreed to pay the maintenance costs and provide the $7,500 grant to the community association. *** Dalziel reported on the ongoing Job Creation Project (JCP), which is seeing work done at the A-frame and at O’Hari Park. The project is currently $2,511 over budget, which the city can cover from their parks and facility maintenance budget. Dalziel said the work being done on the A-frame included new roofing and replacing a beam that was badly damaged by
carpenter ants. He said the $2,500 A-frame. No problems on Halloween, police Cpl. Judson Mayes of the Midway RCMP detachment reports they had zero calls for service regarding any concerns for the Halloween evening. Midway members made patrols in all jurisdictions and were pleased to find parents out with their little ones going from door to door in a safe manner, he said. *** On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Midway RCMP were alerted to a call in Greenwood of a male going through unlocked vehicles at dusk, described as a lone male, wearing a dark hoodie, blue jeans, approximate height 173cm (5’8), and 77kg, 170 lbs. Midway RCMP would like to remind residents to lock their vehicle doors to prevent theft of personal items. Anyone with information regarding this occurrence please call Midway RCMP (250-449-2244) and report your information. *** Winter road conditions across most of B.C. often include snow and ice, Mayes pointed out. Rapid changes in elevation and weather can make the province’s highway conditions unpredictable. You may start a trip in sunshine but face stretches of slush, ice, heavy snowfall or compact snow along the way. Drivers must obey winter tire and chain signs throughout the province

of Nov. 10 Midway residents observed a lone male on a bike looking in vehicle windows and windows to homes. The description given was a male on a bike. I have been on Council 12 years and half of that has been as Mayor. In that time we have faced adversity and seen success. There have been discussions and disagreement. Through all of this I have learned a lot about Midway, myself, and my position. I’m sure you are all getting enough declarations of things accomplished and self back-patting this time of the year, so I would instead like to take this chance to share my thoughts on the position of Mayor and the challenges I see
us facing. Our system here in Canada gives the Mayor powers roughly equal to the rest of Council with the added responsibilities of running meetings and representing Council and the community in ceremonies, hearings and in times of need. It is my responsibility to lead Council. Present them with all the options; give everyone a chance to share and ensure that they come to an informed decision, even if I don’t agree. The Mayor should then
help staff interpret that direction and implement it. Midway faces the same challenges that every small town in BC and probably elsewhere face. How do we maintain our way of life with the ever-increasing costs associated? How do we balance the desires and needs of our residents for services against their ability to pay the resulting increase in taxes? How do we attract industry and residents who will only come if we increase our amenities and servic-
es? Increases we can’t afford without a larger tax base that we won’t have until the new industry and residents start paying taxes. The same way we always have. Hard work, determination, and creativity. Midway will find it’s way into the future. A future my family and I will be proud to be a part of.
MARK DANYLUK
I have been living in the Boundary region since 2002. Prior to that I lived in Richmond where I worked and managed a group home for persons with developmental disabilities, managed, lived and created community in low income housing, was pastor of a church, and worked for an airline where I actively developed communication processes between different departments. I am married to Christine (nee Schmidt) and have four chil-
dren: three of whom have graduated from BCSS. My youngest is in grade 11 at BCSS. My formal training is in Theology. I was a pastor in Midway from 2002-2012. I have been a paramedic with BC Ambulance since 2007, assuming Unit Chief duties in 2012. I am a person who cares about people—all people, regardless of who they are. Justice, compassion and mercy are a big part of who I am. My skill set can be summed in the following descriptions: devel-
oper, restorative, connectedness, positivity and includer. I am a collaborator. I seek to listen, understand and build bridges enabling decisions to be made in a healthy and fair manner. To be honest, a week before the nomination deadline, running for office wasn’t even on my radar. When I was asked to consider running a few days before the deadline it very simply seemed like the right timing and right thing to do. I got the sense from speaking with
various involved parties that my strengths would be a good fit at this time in the school district.
CATHY RIDDLE
My name is Cathy Riddle and I have had the honour of representing you as one of SD51’s Board of Education Trustees for the past 12 years. I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue in that role for the new four-year election term. This year, instead of asking for your support, I am thanking you for the support shown to me over the past 12 years and would like to confirm that I do not take being “acclaimed” for granted. I want you
to know that you can still hold me to the same standard of accountability, and the same responsibility you expect from someone who has won by vote in the election process. I am committed to standing up for the needs of children and youth and will continue to work hard to meet that commitment. I believe in transparency, responsible governance and engaging stakeholder partnerships. I will continue to work with our staff, teachers and communities to en-
sure student achievement. I will continue to advocate for stable, predictable funding and ensure your child and our staff are safe in all our school facilities. I want to see our students come to school excited to learn, feeling safe and ready to take on the future in front of them. By working together we can ensure there are resources available for our students, we can address the unique needs of our diverse district and maintain the great working relation-
ships that have been formed with our community and stakeholders. It does take an entire community to raise a child and our Boundary Communities work extremely hard to meet that goal. I am proud to be part of that collaboration. Again, thank you for your support over the years.
ROSE ZITKO
My name is Rose Zitko and I have been acclaimed as your SD51 school trustee for Area E Kettle Valley North. I have lived in the Boundary all my life and I have two daughters now attending BCSS. My husband and I have both agreed to raise our family here where they can benefit from living in a small town by having nature at our back door, connecting with their community and schools that offer smaller class sizes and a much more personal atmosphere.
But where there are benefits there are also challenges such as the large geographic area within our school district and declining enrolment. With 12 years of experience of being involved in our schools and other organizations for children we have found how to come up with creative solutions to overcome these challenges. I feel with my experience of living in the West Boundary I can bring that view to the board table of how we can work together and collaborate
with administrators, teachers, parents and students to be able to give the best possible education for our children. I feel very passionate for all the students in our district and I will do everything I can to advocate for them so that they receive as many opportunities as they need to help prepare them for life after they graduate. I believe that great communication leads to success, so as your voice at the Board of Education table please feel free to contact
me at any time with your questions or concerns. Thank you. rose.zitko@sd51.bc.ca

Letters to the editor

Greetings from new doctor Editor, The Times: I am pleased to announce that I will be joining your community as the physician at the Greenwood medical clinic, beginning Dec. 1. Myself and the City of Greenwood are working hard to provide you with an updated and modern medical clinic to meet your health care needs. There are many exciting changes happening to the clinic; the medical clinic will now be located in the upstairs of the building you’re familiar with, with the building undergoing a renovation, new equipment being installed and we are transitioning to electronic medical records. Needless to say we are rushing to get all of this done prior to the clinic opening in
December. I thank you for your patience in the first few months, as we transition to working in this new space. To tell you about myself, I am originally from Edmonton. I first came through Grand Forks as part of my medical training during my residency. I moved to the area in 2012 and have been here since. For the past six months I have been practicing full-time emergency medicine at Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks, as well as working regular ER shifts in Nelson and Trail. I will now be in the Greenwood clinic two days per week; these days will generally be Mondays and Thursdays although this will change occasionally. Lori Kirkham will be joining the clinic as medical office assistant, and will be there from Monday to Thursday. We will start booking appointments the
week before the clinic opens. The clinic will currently be restricted to residents of Greenwood and current patients of the clinic, to ensure adequate clinic access for Greenwood residents. I ask that over the next few months, patients of the clinic please book a “meet and greet” appointment with me so that I could get to know you and go through your paper records to learn your health history. Thank you to the City of Greenwood for working with me to bring you a modern clinic, and thank you to Dr. Figurski for looking after your medical care in this transition period. Until we meet, please stay active, and enjoy the lovely fall colours! Dr. Michael Slatnik, Greenwood Medical Clinic
Halloween party a success Editor, The Times: Kettle River Recreation sponsored the Rock Creek Halloween Party at the Little Red Schoolhouse on Oct. 31. We had an assortment of about 50 ghosts, goblins, and all sorts of guests. The haunted house was manned by two resident
ghouls, and a gatekeeper. The bonfire sent out evil flickers to all who enjoyed her warmth. The barbeque produced endless hot dogs, and the Little Red Schoolhouse housed games, the resident witch, coffee, tea hot chocolate and Halloween candy. The grand finale was at 8:30 p.m. with fireworks. Thank you to all the volunteers. The next meeting of the Ket-
Editor, The Times: I would like to thank Gary Mason for promoting the concept of a national park in the South Okanagan of B.C. He is correct in stating that this area represents one of the most important ecosystems of the world and includes nearly 60 federally listed endangered species. I have been familiar with this issue since my election in 2006 and have met with those on both sides of the debate. My conclusion is that the proposed

Park would preserve area park is the best way to preserve this pristine area. This will also create jobs and have a positive effect on our local economy. The Union of BC Municipalities recently passed a resolution in support of the park which has the support of local chambers of commerce, First Nations, environmental groups and many others. There have been legitimate concerns expressed about the continuing viability of a local helicopter school as well as the ranching community. These have been addressed by Parks Canada. It should be remembered that the establishment of a na-

tional park is a lengthy process. A few years ago, I was told by the former federal environment minister, Peter Kent, that the federal government would resume negotiations should the province of B.C. make the request. Concerns of ranchers and others can be addressed once negotiations resume between the two levels of government. I strongly urge our provincial government to re-engage in this important process. We have a chance to do something right for future generations. Alex Atamanenko, MP, BC Southern Interior

Social media subject of presentation JAKE BIANIC
Boundary Creek Times Reporter
With technology changing by the second, people sometimes have a hard time keeping up, or know how to use it properly or appropriately. Jesse Miller, an international public speaker on the subject of social media awareness, held a presentation last Monday, Oct. 27 at Boundary Central Secondary School to help both parents and students better understand how social media affects their everyday lives. There was an afternoon session for West Boundary Grade 6-12 students and an eve-
ning session for parents and community members. “We shouldn’t worry about protecting our children on the Internet,” Miller said. “We should be worried about making sure our children are literate on the Internet. Literacy implies that they have a working knowledge of how things occur online, how their networks are shaped and, at the end of the day, when they are connecting with people, they have to realize not everyone is their friend. “What they share online can be used as a commodity and [the Internet] is something that can be used as a tool to hurt or
a tool that can help lift them up, but they have to realize what that means.” There can be real life consequences to what you do on the Internet, Miller said. He cited examples such as a potential employer or team coach looking up an online profile and seeing a compromising photo or statement, which might lead to lost opportunities. Remember the old private photo album of you being a baby in that bathtub? “Online, people and kids want to have others affirm and like them. We put them online and say ‘like the photo of my [child]’. But every aspect of your kids’ life doesn’t have to be digitized and doesn’t have to be put online.” Miller said the Internet has made us more connected but, at the same time, more disconnected. “It allows us to see things in different ways, lets us check in on people from afar, but the reality is if you
“We build the road, and the road builds us”
Thank You
Thank you to all those in the Boundary Area and beyond who have stepped forward to assist and support our family as we journey down a challenging road. We are blessed indeed to be a part of such a compassionate circle of communities. Your kindness and grace lights our path and keeps our spirits lifted. On Nov. 11, twelve people gathered at the Phoenix cenotaph to read over the names and honour the 15 men listed on the memorial. Poetry and stories were read and a bonfire lit in their memory.
With heartfelt gratitude - Agnes Srahulek & Family

have a kid beside you on the couch and you have no idea what they’re doing on their device you are extremely distant from the reality of what they’re doing even though you’re only five feet away.” Each family has different values and when it comes down to it we have to change how we parent our kids, he added. “The Internet will teach them, but if we can find new ways to bridge the gaps, and make them more aware of the realities of the world, our kids will become more empathetic, more aware, and will become digital learners who will really strive to branch out, and that’s what we should all aim for.” Parents must insist they have a place in their children’s life—both online and off. They need to know how their kids are doing and how they’re feeling; rather than discover these things on the Internet when it’s too late, Miller advised. If you want to learn more about Jesse Miller and what he has to say, check out his website, www.mediatedreality.com.

Brand food, says Ross A popular song right after the First World War asked the question, “How Ya Gonna Keep ‘em Down on the Farm (After They’ve Seen Paree?)”. While it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, today the question often asked is: “How are you going to get shoppers to return to buying local produce after they’ve seen edible pod peas from China?” Finding the answer to the question is important for local farmers and it was the topic of keynote speaker Colleen Ross at the West Boundary Fall Food Forum Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Midway Seniors’ Centre. Ross, who now lives on a 7.5-acre farm in the Grand Forks area, talked of a project she was involved with when she lived near Ottawa that worked to develop and market a brand for the farms in the Ottawa region. “The talk in this room, in this place today, will be about how we can brand the food that is grown in the Boundary region,” she told the Times before
the day began. “First we discover what we can be proud of and what we can celebrate. Then we figure out how we can market it. Because farmers in this area are struggling, we need to make people in the community excited about food that is grown in the Boundary region.” The day-long event was sponsored by the West Boundary Sustainable Foods and Resources Society (FAR). There were also talks scheduled on seed saving, four-season harvesting, dehydrating and garlic. Leda Fair is president of the society; the event was organized by Vivien Browne. Browne later told the Times that plans are afoot for a monthly gathering to continue the conversation around local food sustainability. Colleen Ross was the keynote speaker at the West Boundary Fall Food Forum last Saturday in Midway – advocating for stronger ties between consumers and Boundary-area farmers.
Recruiters meet at BCSS to talk to students
Okanagan and Selkirk Colleges, Trinity Western and the Canadian Forces to provide information to students seeking higher education, programs and trades. Cpl. Laura Matern, with the 44 Engineer Squadron 39 Combat Engineers out of Trail, said there are reserve unit opportunities for students while they are still in high school. “One weeknight a month—one exercise a month earns them an extra $200 a month,” she said. “You can even go away for training or tasking for the entire summer vacation.” She said there are units in Trail (combat engineer) and Kelowna (armoured). “It’s not about going overseas. it’s just about serving your country and I think it is important to serve your country,” she said. Okanagan College sent two recruiters, one from their business administration school and the another to cover everything else. With campuses in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton, Okanagan College is set to embark on a $33-million expansion to their trades and apprenticeship Students got to talk face-to-face with someone who has already travelled the post-secondary programs. Selkirk College also offers path last week as recruiters came to BCSS to explain options. What do you want to be when you grow up? This is a question that gets asked of young kids when they are three or five or maybe even seven years old; but the question takes on a great deal more importance for a 17- or 18-year-old high school student. Do you want a trade certificate? How
about a diploma—that’ll take two years. A degree will set you back four years. And which institution are you going to choose? To help the Grade 11 and 12 students sort it all out, BCSS held a post secondary institution day last Friday in the gym. Student recruiters were there from Simon Fraser University, Thompson Rivers,
close-to-home post-secondary opportunities. While most programs are offered at their Castlegar and Nelson campuses, they also offer courses at the Grand Forks campus. They are particularly proud of their Rural Pre-Med program. Tuition and living costs are lower than at a big-city university and Selkirk offers scholarships and awards for students from the region. Simon Fraser University (SFU) offers academic four-year bachelors degrees, with over 100 academic programs in eight faculties. They are well known for their interdisciplinary programs that draw information from different disciplines. SFU is also the only non-American University to compete in the NCAA. They have three campuses on the Lower Mainland: Burnaby, downtown Vancouver and Surrey. The main campus for Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is in Kamloops, augmented by a campus in Williams Lake offering two-year programs and foundations for trades as well as regional centres throughout their catchment area. TRU is a comprehensive university offering certificates, diplomas, full degree programs and foundation apprenticeships for trades. As the recruiter from TRU said, “The day gives students a chance to do their research and find the university that fits them best.”
How to Improve Life for Rural Canadians Canada Post became a Crown Corporation to improve network services. The Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA) wants to ensure this multi-billion dollar public network remains viable and able to serve the public. We have found a way to make this sustainable. A recent study shows that nearly half of post offices outside of Canada’s big cities are in communities with no bank or credit union. In those communities that still have a bank or a credit union, many residents have to contend with limited, part-time banking hours. Our survey of Canada’s 3,300 rural post offices: “Why Post Offices should offer banking services” is available for free download at: http://bit.ly/1r8U3fj. Offering financial services in post offices would create a new revenue stream for Canada Post. Equally important, it would benefit numerous communities in Canada whose residents, in order to get to a bank or credit union, are forced to travel long distances. That costs time and money and stifles economic development. Many other countries similar to Canada, such as the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy and New Zealand, have very successful banking services right in their post offices. We, at CPAA, believe that our study is significant because of the value of this public asset. Canada Post is uniquely positioned to offer financial services throughout rural Canada. When Canada Post can make more money and offer more services to Canadians who need them, we have a perfect opportunity. Let’s not lose it. Please Support Rural Canada. Write to Lisa Raitt, the Minister in charge of Canada Post, and ask her to make this happen. Her letter of suggestion can be found at: http://bit.ly/1pxhMVZ. CPAA represents over 8,700 employees of Canada Post who work in over 3,300 rural post offices across Canada. These offices make up over 50% of all postal outlets. Our membership, consisting of 95% women, serves communities in every province.

Thank You The family of Jack Ludwar would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to all friends and well-wishers for the calls, visits, cards, food and hugs. Your presence and many acts of kindness were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. Naude and all the care-givers who treated dad with special care and dignity. You are all angels! To Lynn for all your help and Faye Hansinger for the hospital bed. To Stacey for the power point and Randy for the audio system. To Gerry Foster for officiating. To Linda, Merry and all the ladies who supplied food and helped with the tea. To Gordie Jones for the special bagpipe tribute to dad and to the McMynns for the delicious contribution for the wake. It is during times like this that makes living in a small town so special. Sincere thanks from the Ludwar, Uphill and Rexin families.

Fair group hears good news JAKE BIANIC
Boundary Creek Times Reporter
The first post-fair meeting of the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association heard some good news: income for the 2014 weekend was up and expenses were down compared to 2013. Treasurer Lisa Sims reported that food vendors were especially pleased. There were only 22 vendors this year (there were 29 in 2013). Since they grossed $133,981 it meant a bigger pot went to fewer people. Attendance was up too, according to the wrist band/day pass count. In 2013 there was 8,773 given out, and in 2014 there was 9,519. Sims said that Saturday was busier this year than last, but Sunday was not. Plans for a new gatehouse were also proposed, with four lanes in, and two offices up stairs. Members of the Lions Club are willing to volunteer their time to erect the building. Four copies of plans
were donated by Harmony Homes. The project was referred to the next budget meeting. Freeman’s Country Store donated a rack for fence panels and the association has purchased 15 new Hi-Hog panels. Louise Fossen will not be taking over the pavilion manager position next year. Jill Kellerman is willing to take some of the load, but she does not want to take on all the responsibilities herself. The association is still looking for someone else to help with the position. The nominating committee was established for the annual general meeting to be held on Jan. 21, 2015. Pierre Sinclaire will chair; Lincoln Blaine, Ilana Fraser and Sharon Funnel will assist. James Delisle approached the members with details of an offer of in-kind donation to the association by Emcon. The company supports the communities in which it operates by assisting with projects (the Louisa Street bridge in Greenwood was put in through the program).
Jesse Wray Leiss July 22, 1992 – October 23, 2014
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend whose free and outgoing spirit will be missed by all. Jesse leaves to mourn his mother Tracy (Adrian), father Ken (Lee), siblings Kim (Bart), Krystal (Kevin), Lucas, Sean and grandparents Ruth, Jack and Eleanor. There are also many more family and close friends too numerous to name. Jesse lived his life by his own rules. He came into this world full of curiosity and with a wild sense of adventure. He lived his entire life this way, and always marched to the beat of his own drum. Jesse grew up in St. Andrews, Manitoba, then moved to Greenwood, B.C. where he completed his grade 12, before returning to Manitoba. Jesse was the happiest when he was outdoors. He loved to go fishing and camping and would spend many hours with his family out on the boat. Jesse had a contagious laugh that was often referred to as the “Tigger Laugh”. He had an infectious smile that could cheer up anyone’s day. Jesse was, and will always be loved by all who knew him. Though his life was taken too soon, he will never be forgotten. A Celebration of Jesse Leiss’ Life will be held on Sunday November 16, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at 123 Copper St. Greenwood, BC (McArthur Centre—big red building with Legion below). Please join us. Open mic to follow for stories that you may want to share. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone for all the support in this most saddest time of our lives.
Delisle suggested the offer could be used to provide dust control; however, since it is tricky to keep the water trucks going all fair weekend because of the amount of traffic, he suggested having the area sprayed with dust control suppressant a couple of weeks prior to the fair. It was agreed that the Emcon offer was too good to pass up, but that drainage was a bigger issue than dust control. It was proposed that a drainage line be dug, and filled with drainage rock. “I think we’re on to something here, Jamie,” fair president Lincoln Blaine remarked, “because we already discussed drainage and were trying to figure out what we were going to do, so if we could get some help in that regard, I think that will be more beneficial to us.” Delisle will contact Emcon and get back to the board at a later meeting. The next meeting of the fair association will be Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
Fair was awesome Submitted
It is always nothing less than awesome, the contributions of time and caring, which go into making the Rock Creek Fall Fair happen, and happen in such “Boundary” style and spirit. From people tying strings on exhibitor tags to scheduling gate volunteers, booking judges, hanging wasp traps, flagging the parking lots, cleaning stalls, shuttling sawdust, assembling tents, decorating buildings, displays, the stage; washing tables, testing sound systems, lugging tables, chairs, shelves and screens; organizing and deciding classes, writing articles, labelling envelopes; the list is massive, what efforts go into one great weekend. If there were ever one thing to learn from the Rock Creek Fall Fair, it is that every person counts. The months ahead planning classes, discussing new ideas; the set up beforehand transforming the grounds to fit the thousands that come to tromp our fairgrounds for two days; and fulfilling the great slate of manpower needed to ensure everyone is comfortable and entertained for their stay with us; this can only be done by many, many people—people with great hearts for their community, their families, friends and livelihoods. There was a person to secure the chinstrap for every brave mutton buster, an announcer for all show arenas, someone on hand all day at both information booths, cheerful first aid attendants, stage MCs, gate personnel from dawn till dusk, security all day and all night, kid “wranglers” for the children’s games, and on and on. Every person counts! The weekend was beautiful and sunny, the opening ceremony was respectfully jam-packed, all the barns and buildings had steady streams of people looking, talking, petting the baby goats and guffawing at the piglets romping around their mommy, visiting—everyone wanted to see and experience what we had to offer. The 2014 Rock Creek Fall Fair was a truly fun and fantastic fair, a great example of our communities. Thank you to everyone who pitched in. You should be nothing short of proud.

Small majority in favour of prohibition AL DONNELLY
Chronicles of Boundary Country from the pages of The Boundary Creek Times Volume V, No. 6 – October 15, 1898
Alcohol Prohibition Plebiscite – “The plebiscite of last week was disappointing to the prohibitionists. About one-fourth of the electors of the Dominion cast their ballots… with only a small majority in favour of prohibition. It is scarcely probable that the government will feel bound to take any notice of the vote as it cannot be considered an expression of public opinion. In Greenwood, there are about 140 registered voters in the city. Of these, 27 showed sufficient interest in the question of prohibition to record an expression of their opinion. Sixteen were against prohibition and eleven in favor.” Poor, Miserable Grand Forks – The Boundary Creek Times and the Grand Forks

The prosecutor smartly threw out the case and the charge was dismissed.” Driven off the Street – After the city of Greenwood announced that they intended to level Government Street to a height, or perhaps a depth, deemed more appropriate, the Times had these comments. “Government Street is no longer a thoroughfare. Business men finding that the Government Street ‘cut’ would leave them in mid air, have moved as fast as they could get suitable buildings elsewhere. The west side of the street is not so seriously affected by the cut. But Alderman Barrett, on the east side, will be forced to build a six-foot stone wall to keep his lawn from sliding into the Government Street cut.” (ed. - Barrett’s house is better known today as the McArthur House, at 326 S. Government Avenue—and the stone wall still looks very nice.)

From the Back Pew Just saying, by the sometimes irreverent Ed Brouwer. No claims of absolute originality are made for this material. As one man said, “I milk a lot of cows, but I churn my own butter.
We love to talk. Nothing is opened more wrongly at the wrong time than our mouth. Our mouths get us into a lot of trouble. James in Chapter 3 says, “If you can control your mouth, you’re perfect‌.â€?— literally “mature, healthy.â€? Three reasons we have to learn to manage our mouth. MY TONGUE DIRECTS WHERE I GO: Our tongue is like a rudder that steers us. Don’t like the way you’re headed, change the way you talk. Some people think it may be best not to say anything. A guy joined the monastery. He was given a three-year probation period where he was not to speak at all, at the end of each year he could say two words. At the end of the first year he said, “Bed hard.â€? At end of the second year he said, “Food cold.â€? At the end of the third year he says, “I quit.â€? The head priest says, “Doesn’t surprise me. All you’ve done is complain since you got here.â€? MY TONGUE CAN DESTROY WHAT I HAVE v. 5 James gives another illustration: Imagine a beautiful forest, tall beautiful trees everywhere. Now imagine it in one minute up in smoke, completely destroyed by a tiny match. A careless camper can destroy an entire forest overnight. A careless word can destroy a life overnight. Gossip like fire, spreads quickly, wrecks havoc. Fire and words under control can give tremendous warmth and light, but fire and words out of control can be devastating. A couple comes in for marriage counseling. “I said this and then she said that, then I said
this... Then what happened? “All hell broke loose. MY TONGUE DISPLAYS WHO I AM. It reveals my real character. It tells what’s really inside of me. James says, “With the tongue we praise God and with the same tongue we curse men who’ve been made in God’s likeness. From the same mouth come praise and curses. My brothers, this should not be. Cursing here means any kind of put down. Have you heard someone say, “I don’t know what got into me. It’s not like me to say that. I don’t know why I said that. It’s totally out of character. James would say, “No, that is exactly like you. Quit kidding yourself. What’s inside is going to come out. What comes out of a well is what is inside of it. Jesus said in Matthew 12:34, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. Your tongue problem is more serious that you think, for it is heart related. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Get a new heart Ezekiel 18:31: “Rid yourself of all the offenses you have committed and get a new heart and a new spirit! Painting the outside of the pump doesn’t make any difference if there is poison in the well. Ask God for help every day. Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips so my tongue can direct where I go; it can destroy what I have; and most of all, it clearly displays my true character. Bottom line—don’t let your tongue lick you.

All aboard! Casey Bot made these signs and Jim Hinks helped dig holes for the ones at the west end of the Hwy 3 straightaway as it passes through Midway. John Kohlhauser and Steve Stewart came out to help set the signs into place. Bot said the Kettle River Museum bought the plywood and posts and he cut the letters out of repurposed hockey rink boards from the arena.
