Central Albertans remember

Tim Tobias, a member of the Delaware First Nation in Southern Ontario, attended the Red Deer Veterans Park ceremonies with a home-made sign, thanking his father, his grandfather and his greatgrandfather for their service in Canada’s military.

He watched the services in Ottawa on TV, and then made his way downtown for the outdoor services at the cenotaph “Watching the service this morning from Ontario made me cry. As you can see, my dad, my grandfather, my great-grandfather, they all served. They all came home, but it was my honour and duty to come to remember them, because I think we cannot forget the sacrifices that servicemen have done for us. We have peace. We have relative peace and calm and we have our freedom, and we can’t let go of that. Many of the aboriginal community across Canada have served for North America, and many have died. It’s things like that have to be recognized, not forgotten. I love this country. I really do.

When we see attacks on our country, whether that be a terrorist initiative, we don’t know absolutely, but we cannot allow this, and we cannot allow ourselves to be imprisoned within our own country also. We fought for these freedoms and we intend to hang onto them.”

VETERANS: Extra security posted at ceremonies Largely unnoticed among the people attending the ceremonies were members of the RCMP, standing guard. A few blocks away, at the rear of the Red Deer Arena, an RCMP member in combat dress stood by with a semi-automatic rifle in his hands as squadrons of soldiers and police officers mustered for the ceremonies inside.

Uniformed RCMP were also posted in various areas and plainclothes members circulated among the crowds. The additional security was posted this year because of the attacks on Vincent in St-Jeansur-Richelieu, Que., and Cirillo at the War Memorial in Ottawa last month, said the watch commander for the Red Deer RCMP, who asked not to be named.

Cora and Curtis Fedyk Métis elder Cora Fedyk, whose family has a long history of military service, was chosen as the Silver Cross Mothers’ representative for services held at the Red Deer Arena by Branch 35 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Fedyk attended with her son, Curtis Fedyk, whose own son is currently on active duty in Edmonton.

Her father, Rueben Blondeau, served in the First World War and three of her brothers, Walter, Louis and Edward, served in the Second World War. Edward died in the Korean War and was buried in Guam. Fedyk’s oldest son, Douglas Boyer, served in the Air Force and her grandson, Jeremy Kupsch — Curtis’s son, is a reservist with the 3rd Division in Edmonton. Kupsch served in Afghanistan in 2009 and again in 2011.

Fedyk has a long history of work with the Métis Association and the Métis Veterans Association.

She said she was surprised when the Legion asked her to take part this year.

“I shivered for about two hours when I found out.”

She said she still always feels the presence of

There is a different feel this year because it was the first time in the modern era that Canadian soldiers were attacked on Canadian soil, said parade commander Maj. Jason Snider, commanding officer of the 78 Field Battery reserve unit in Red Deer.

“It’s always nice to see this arena fill up with people who are coming out to remember the sacrifices of soldiers who came before us, at that significance is the same every year,” said Snider.

Bombardier Kevin Machan, a member of the 78 Field Battery for roughly 20 years, said he feels honoured to serve his country and to take part in the service of remembrance. He said this one does felt different because the attacks on Vincent and Cirillo struck close to home.

“Every year, we do reflect on the soldiers we’ve lost in the battery and in the country,” he said.

Veteran Bob Crites, president of the Royal Canadian Regiment Association, also said the events of the last month have made things different.

Crites commended freelance journalist Al Cameron of Sylvan Lake and his group, Veterans Voices of Canada, for organizing a display of 116 Canadian flags alongside Hwy 11, each flag representing 1,000 Canadian killed in combat since 1900.

Seated in the stands, Valerie Leeming spoke about surviving the attacks on London during the Second World War and the need to pass the lessons of history on to future generations.

“It’s overwhelming sometimes. We shouldn’t forget and neither should the kids,” said Leeming.

“I think it is (different this year) because it happened on home soil,” she said.

“People get to the point where they think nothing is going to happen to them, but it does and it will.

You have to face it, deal with it and carry on.”

Leeming spoke of bomb sites in London that have been fenced off and left as grim reminders of the Second World War blitz.

“Sometimes, from a personal point of view, I wish a few words could be said for the many civilians who are killed, because it’s just as devastating for their families. You don’t think of it, you just live your day and hope tomorrow is going to be better.” bkossowan@reddeeradvocate.com

Cpl. (retired) Horace Warden was two days short of his 18th birthday in 1951, when he signed up with the Canadian Army. He spent the next two years and Germany and was shipped to Korea after 60 days leave, returning later for another tour in Germany. He was on a training exercise in Wainwright when he was awakened at 3 a.m. and told he would be heading to conflict in the Belgian Congo. He was stabbed in Germany, but says Congo was the worst experience of all. He and his unit had flown in and were captured by rebel forces when they landed.

They were rescued by soldier from Nigerian, who took advantage of the poor discipline among their Congolese captors.

After retiring from the armed forces, Warden spent 18 years as a service officer for the Royal Canadian Legion, finding assistance for about 1,100 veterans and their families. With help and guidance from his wife, Donnie, Warden was able to make significant inroads for many of them, including getting a payment of $250,000 for a woman whose husband had fallen ill and died after being subjected to chemical testing at Canadian Forces Base Suffield.

Now president of the Korean Veterans Association, Warden laid a wreath on their behalf during Remembrance Day services at Veterans Park in Red Deer on Tuesday.

Larry and Yvonne Beeds of Sylvan Lake spent some time at the Flags of Remembrance display on Hwy 12 near Sylvan Lake to pay their respects and speak a few words of gratitude for the 116,000 fallen soldiers represented there.

“We have just heard that there was 116 flags put up in remembrance of our soldiers who fought,” said Yvonne. The recent deaths of soldiers on duty brought those sacrifices to light, she said.

“The first time I saw the flags, I was really overwhelmed. I thought, wow, who’s ever done that, what a commemorative thing to do. We watched the recent films. In a way, everything has changed, but it hasn’t changed. The memories are still there.

As Canadians, we wanted to commemorate and remember our friends and neighbours who fought, all the wonderful things they did. It’s a day of rejoicing that we have freedom and it’s also a day that we look back and give thanks to our soldiers.

We can’t do enough to thank our soldiers for what they’ve done.”

Ceremony honours lost airmen

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Four lost airmen have finally been laid to rest — 72 years after they disappeared while on a Second World War training mission on Vancouver Island.

A single coffin draped with the Canadian flag contained the remains of the four airmen — a Canadian sergeant and three servicemen from England — as they were honoured at a military service on Monday.

Family members, veterans and members of the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron and the West Coast’s operational Sea King squadron gathered to pay tribute to the men whose remains were discovered last year in the wreckage of their plane.

“We come together with thanksgiving and sorrow,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Rev. Major Angela James.

Pilot Officer Charles George Fox, Pilot Officer Antony William Lawrence, Sgt. William Baird and Sgt. Robert Ernest Luckock disappeared on Oct. 30, 1942, James told mourners at Victoria’s pastoral Royal Oak Burial Park on a crisp, sunny fall morning.

“We gather to honour these brave men today and to offer our condolences to their families,” she said. “Asking God to have mercy upon their souls, we return them to the earth that they may rest in peace, their place known and their memory secure.”

Calgary-born Baird was 25 and an avid athlete who served as a wireless operator and air gunner.

Luckock, born in Ilford, England, was 21 and had received his pilot’s flying badge on June 19, 1942, four months before he and the others took their last flight.

Thirty-one-year-old Fox was born in London. Awarded airman of the year by the Royal Air Force, he was sent to Canada for further training as a navigator, a duty he was performing when the aircraft disappeared.

Lawrence, 21, was born in Croydon, England. He was recommended for pilot instruction and his first posting as an officer was in Patricia Bay, B.C. The men’s names have been listed on the National War Memorial in Ottawa as missing, along with nearly 800 people who died in service, transport or training accidents during the Second World War and who have no known grave.

They were on a routine training mission in an Avro Anson plane when they vanished.

A trio of logging engineers came upon the wreckage in October 2013 while working on a remote mountainside near Port Renfrew, B.C., on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The site is barely 50 kilometres west of where the aircraft took off.

Tom Burdge, a Second World War pilot, said his stepson was one of the engineers who found the wreckage and the two of them went to the site to help identify the aircraft as an Avro Anson.

“My stepson realized it was part of a training aircraft and he got in touch with me,” said Burdge, 91, who attend-

ed the service.

“I was able to go in with my stepson and two or three other people to get some identification just to corroborate that it was the actual aircraft that had set course years before.”

Department of National Defence officials also went to the scene and discovered human remains in the wreckage, which prompted a call to the BC Coroners Service.

Winter weather prevented the two agencies from mounting a recovery mission until last spring, when a coroner and a forensic anthropologist recovered and identified the remains as those of the four men listed on the flight’s manifest.

“It’s very emotional for me,” Burdge said. “They should be honoured. They gave their lives for us.”

He said he recalled standing at the wreckage site in the forest feeling “very, very sad to know that there were four people there somewhere, buried.”

During the service, retired Capt.

Gary Brown, a member of the Victoria Branch of the Vancouver Island Aircrew Association, read a stanza called The Act of Remembrance from the Laurence Binyon poem, For the Fallen.

“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.”

STARS crews from Calgary and Edmonton were dispatched to the area but were called off because they were no longer required.

RCMP said road conditions were “extremely treacherous” at the time.

“At the time of the collision, highways were very icy due to the ... snowfall, cold temperatures and wind gusts over the past few days,” said a news release.

“It appears that the road was very slick,” Const. Matthew Doane of Rocky Mountain House RCMP told Global News.

The names and ages of the deceased have not been released pending next of kin notifications.

Security in a heartbeat BUT IS THE PRICE WE PAY FOR CONSUMER CONVENIENCE MORE THAN A LITTLE STEEP? Would you pay $100 and tether yourself to an electronic device every day, just so you won’t have to remember the passwords and PINs to your various debit and credit cards, laptop, tablet, smartphone and all their apps?

Or to make growing your credit card debt more secure (and probably more convenient than is good for you)?

At the rate we have accumulated these things in our lives, $100 seems almost worth it.

GREG If you (like me) NEIMAN have avoided upgrading your computer’s operating system or declined subscribing to what might be a useful service, or couldn’t reboot after a crash, all because you couldn’t recall your password, being able to do all these things with a wave of your hand seems ... almost useful.

Especially if all these transactions could be as secure as your individual heartbeat. Nobody can steal, copy or forge that.

Call it the result of paying for research at universities. A group of tech-

heads at the University of Toronto was thinking about biometrics as a means of instant, secure identification. Rather than finding another way to read a fingerprint or retina scan, they looked into the possibility that the electronic signature of every person’s heartbeat is likewise unique.

Anything that can be read electronically — like an ECG — can be digitized and stored. So they rounded up 1,000 or so volunteers at the U of T, gave them an ECG and found that no two of them matched exactly.

What do you do with information like that? You spin off a company and look for seed money.

The new company, called Bionym, got a total of $14 million from the federal government, through Export Development Canada, and investment partners like Ignition Partners, Relay Ventures — and MasterCard.

They used the money to design and build a slim bracelet, called a Nymi, that you activate with a reading of your heartbeat. That little bracelet would then be able to talk to your computer, laptop, smartphone — and your credit card — and act in your name.

It could work with any other applications a person could dream up that requires personal ID. Some articles have already suggested hotel room key access, or even ID at restaurants, which would instantly know your personal preferences and profile, just as

you walk through the door. Italian sausage pizza, no pepperoni, with extra onions, coming right up.

I’m betting MasterCard got the link with the Royal Bank of Canada, which will be testing the devices in the near future. If things go as hoped, Royal Bank account holders would be able to purchase a Royal Bank Nymi, and use it as a debit or credit card at bank machines and whatever stores that are able to accept it.

After that, expect every bank to roll out their own versions.

We are so used to instant rollouts of the latest gizmo, but just be aware that making a warehouse full of bracelets isn’t all this involves. Think of all the places that will have to adopt the technology to accept these things, in numbers to make having a Nymi device worthwhile. That will take some time.

In the meantime, perhaps we should sit back and think about whether we really need this.

Even considering my own difficulties with passwords and PINs, I’m not sure this gizmo is worth 100 bucks, plus the effort of having to learn how to use it, connect it to everything in the known universe, and keep it running.

Isn’t it enough that I can just tap my bank card on the machine in the store, and the money in my bank account is transferred to the retailer?

I’m already shamed sometimes because I so seldom carry cash. It’s like

I have to make an extra trip to pick up a poppy for Remembrance Day, or remember to grab a few coins at home before I go shopping, to have something for the charity box at the grocery store, which used to be so usual as to be thoughtless.

And I certainly don’t need anything that makes buying more stuff more convenient. Or another reminder that I’m “not the target demographic.”

I’ve been wrong about these things before. Years ago, I was happily convinced I would be one of those people who would go through life without having a personal computer. Or a digital camera. Or writing a blog. Or, until this year, without owning a cellphone.

I still vow never to Face my Book or tweet my twitter. Lines need to be drawn.

I also maintain the hope to complete my time in this world without every store that I walk past knowing who I am and my complete shopping history.

Maybe The Machine has already taken over but I prefer to be the least active cog within it.

Health-care competition essential Your recent article entitled Re-inventing Alberta Health Services was written by Robert McGarvey, who reportedly is an economic historian, whatever that is. With all due respect, if his comments were intended to uncover new insights into delivering affordable health care in Alberta, it didn’t.

In my opinion, the key problem with Alberta health care is not the quality or delivery but in the cost. It eats up half of all government expenses and is rising dramatically. It’s unaffordable. We must get that through our heads!

Lets face it: monopolies, in any business, will eventually become high-cost and inefficient. It ought to be obvious by now why Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands have more efficient health care for their populations than does Alberta. These three countries are at the top of a list of universal healthcare systems like ours, but with private, parallel options. Monopolies are dangerous, competition is healthy and causes monopolies to improve or die.

So there it is — the obvious solution to ballooning health care costs in Alberta.

Why has it not been implemented? The simple answer is that our provincial government has no interest in improving our health-care system. For their selfish purposes, it is good enough, as it is for the fat and happy doctors and nurses.

So what is the selfish purpose of our provincial government? To use health care as a political football to get elected, and do it over and over until, maybe someday, the voting public will wise up to their chicanery.

Why have we not seen through this hypocrisy?

Because this government are masters of deception,

and us being proud Albertans, we personally fear the possibility of any other party getting their eager claws on our fat public purse. It really is humbling (and mind-boggling) that for at least the last decade we have been duped by our government (me also).

They have been deceiving their loyal voters, and they will do it over and over again. And why not?

It’s just pork-barrel politics, it’s legal, it’s cool and it works every time.

Do you want an egregious example of their crazy politics? Do you remember Stephen Duckett (the former head of Alberta Health Services)?

Duckett was a brilliant, super-qualified administrator and analyst. He was brought from Australia to uncover inefficiencies in our health system and recommend changes. He began to do just that. With no loyalties holding him hostage, he spoke honestly and openly.

Unfortunately his findings would not reflect well on our provincial government, so his mandate was immediately changed. In fact, he had to be silenced.

He was. Do you remember how the government managed to convince us that Duckett was some kind of an idiot with a cookie problem? It was an absolute lie, but we believed it. He was belittled and jettisoned.

Does Alberta Health Services actually know how to improve health care and make it affordable? I’m sure they do, but to mess with it would mean public blame and cost them their jobs. The health minister has absolute control over Alberta Health Services.

They are a handy whipping boy for this government.

I guess that as adult voters we must finally realize that for four decades our monopoly Progressive Conservative government has been slowly developing into the entitlement monster it is today — a slicktalking political machine that has mastered the art of political subterfuge. They won the voters trust repeatedly. They have played us as dupes repeatedly.

They have used and abused Alberta Health Services repeatedly. They win elections repeatedly.

Masterfully, they have used our fear of “a change in government” as a primary means to win elections repeatedly. Indeed, our PC government is an international sensation — who in all the world can boast of 40 consecutive years in power?

But wait a minute! Do we as voters carry some responsibility for a stagnated health-care system?

Is the ballooning cost solely the fault of the PC government? No. They are only doing what Albertans want. Do you know the mayor of every town and city in Alberta wants more health facilities and services established in their particular municipality. Why? Because health initiatives are vote-getters and attract people and businesses to their area. So why not keep the pressure on our government to spend more?

Don’t they hold the strings to our fat public purse?

We Albertans love to believe in the Alberta Advantage which equates to something like this: a nurses union (the highest paid in Canada) which is fat and happy, a doctors union (AMA) which is fat and happy. (Don’t even think of calling them after-hours.)

The AMA ridicules every suggestion for change, and they always, always, win. We revere our doctors.

They can do no wrong!

It’s a merry-go-round! So maybe we ought to vote for a party that has the courage to say no to voters.

Where is such a party? (They wouldn’t last five minutes!)

If the PC government had the courage to drop the “Let’s get elected again” mentality, and passed the torch to Alberta Health Services, who are dedicated health-care administrators (politicians know zero about health care) we would see huge improvements.

Indeed, we would see the true Alberta Advantage.

Private competition to improve a stagnated mess, and even more important than that, we would see funding based on outcomes, not the funding joke that is now in place.

OTTAWA — Tens of thousands of people surrounded the sunshine-bathed National War Memorial on Tuesday as Gov. Gen. David Johnston formally rededicated the monument in the name of all who have died in the service of Canada.

Clad in full military uniform, Johnston was standing just steps away from the spot where Cpl. Nathan Cirillo gave his life just three weeks ago in an attack on Parliament Hill that has given this year’s Remembrance Day a laser-sharp currency.

Johnston said Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was killed two days earlier in Quebec at the hands of man with jihadist sympathies, have joined the ranks of thousands of other dead, who will always be remembered. “Freedom without peace is agony, and peace without freedom is slavery, and we will tolerate neither.

This is the truth we owe our dead,� Johnston said.

He urged the crowd to look closely at the towering bronze statues of Peace and Freedom atop the monument, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which sits at its base. “We don’t know his name. He is our unknown soldier. In anonymity he honours all Canadians who died and may yet die for their country,� Johnston said. “We will stand on guard for him and for them, as did Nathan Cirillo, who takes his place among them.

We will strive for peace and for freedom, as did Patrice Vincent, who joins them also.�

There is a new inscription on the memorial’s granite wall — “In Service to Canada - Au service du Canada.� The dates of the Afghanistan mission and the South African War have also been added.

Princess Anne was on hand to deliver a message from the Queen, who said it is fitting to rededicate the monument to all Canadians who gave their lives in the service of peace, justice and freedom. “’Seventy-five years ago, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth dedicated this National War Memorial in honour of all those who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Great War,� the Princess Royal said on the Queen’s behalf. “Today, it is fitting that with this ceremony of rededication, we pay tribute to all those Canadians who in the intervening years have laid down their lives in the service of peace, justice and freedom.�’ Johnston spoke of the terrible death toll of the First World War, then called the Great War, and the promises made to remember the dead. He said Canadians refused to forget after the Great War. “We noted the names and recorded them in books and engraved them on walls in the hope that we would ever protect them against anonymity,� he said. “Today we stand as one, in silent tribute, not only to keep the vow made long ago but also to rededicate this symbol of that promise.�

As a consequence of the Oct. 22 attack on Parliament Hill — Cirillo’s killer, Michael Zehaf Bibeau, was himself gunned down in a shootout minutes later in the halls of Parliament’s Centre Block — security was visibly heightened for this year’s ceremony in Ottawa.

Jets hit Islamic State position in Iraq

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA — Canada has struck another blow against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Department of National Defence said Tuesday as Canadians gathered in cities and towns across the country to mark Remembrance Day. A CF-18 fighter-bomber used a laser-guided bomb to hit an artillery position Tuesday near the city of Bayji, north of Tikrit, said Johanna Quinney, a spokeswoman for Defence Minister Rob Nicholson.

The airstrikes were being conducted near Bayji, which sits roughly midway between the cities of Baghdad and Kirkuk, in support of Iraqi forces conducting localized offensives in the area, Quinney said.

U.S. and coalition jets have been pounding the area in recent weeks, destroying bunkers, vehicles and least one anti-aircraft gun in recent days.

A technical briefing on the strike has been scheduled for Thursday, but an update on DND’s website said, “The use of air power contributing to the destruction of ISIL infrastructure and equipment denies them the military means to attack (Iraqi security forces) or coalition assets.�

In a statement, Nicholson acknowledged the fact that the strike took place on Remembrance Day as he thanked the military personnel taking part in Canada’s combat mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. “I commend the nearly 600 men and women in uniform for their tremendous work today in the international fight to degrade ISIL,� Nicholson said. “This strike demonstrates Canada’s firm resolve to tackle the threat of terrorism and stand with our allies against ISIL’s atrocities against innocent women, children and men.�

Just over a week ago, Canadian bombs destroyed construction equipment that ISIL fighters were using to develop defensive positions near Fallujah, west of Baghdad — the only other successful strike as yet acknowledged by National Defence.

The militants had also been using the equipment to reshape a local dam, flooding nearby land to force Iraqi forces on to roads that had been mined and to deny a water supply to local civilians.

Next challenge to Canadian oil: lawsuits

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS WASHINGTON — There are new threats of lawsuits against Canadian oil pipeline projects in the United States, suggesting that the election of an oil-friendly, Republican-dominated Congress won’t end the industry’s battles here.

The most famous of those projects is Keystone XL — but it’s not the only one.

A coalition of groups will also hold a news conference Wednesday to discuss a lawsuit in U.S. federal court against expansion plans for another network into the American Midwest, Enbridge Inc.’s Alberta Clipper.

Such legal threats offer a cautionary note in a symphony of speculation since last week’s U.S. midterms that the results might be a boon for bitumen.

An activist who led the fight against Keystone XL remains hopeful President Barack Obama would veto any pipeline bill that reached his desk.

Should he sign it, she said, there will be another date in court.

Jane Kleeb said the grounds for such a suit would be constitutional, and revolve around whether Congress actually has the right to approve infrastructure that crosses international boundaries.

“You would see groups and landowners suing ... over the bill just like we did in Nebraska with the argument

That authority does not belong to the U.S. Congress, says the lawyer fighting the pipeline in Nebraska.

Attorney Dave Domina expects a decision in the current state case within a couple of months. But he says a congressional power-play in Washington could be grounds for a fresh lawsuit.

“What is the effect of Congress passing a law that says to the president, ’You have to approve it’? I think that answer to that is, ’None,”’ Domina said.

“I think that the president has constitutional authority to decide on border-crossing permits, and Congress doesn’t really have any role in here except to try to be political with it.

“People need to understand that anything Congress tries to do here, to meddle with that presidential power, is political theatre... The Congress can’t push it to the president, get the president to agree with political power, and think it’s over. The people might say, ’Wait a minute. You’ve both violated the Constitution now.”’

He said it makes no difference if the president signs the law. Cross-border pipelines must be approved by government’s executive branch, following a proper review process, not the legislative branch, he noted.

The debate over congressionalversus-presidential power is as old as America itself.

BRIEF Pembina building pipeline in northeast B.C.’s Montney formation CALGARY — Pembina Pipeline Corp. (TSX:PPL) said Tuesday that it’s going ahead with a $210-million expansion to its pipeline network that will transport condensates and natural gas liquids out of northeastern British Columbia.

The Calgary-based company has signed binding agreements with customers for the NEBC Expansion project, which will serve producers in the Montney formation.

“Pembina has been actively engaging with producers regarding the development of the Montney play,” said Jason Wiun, Pembina’s vice-president of conventional pipelines.

“With significant exploration in the area, our customers are looking for a solution for their liquids production.”

Natural gas liquids, feedstock for the plastics and petrochemical industries, fetch a better price than dry natural gas. Energy firms in Western Canada have been pouring more capital into “liquids-rich” areas like the Montney in recent years to boost their bottom lines.

Pembina’s NEBC project will connect Montney gas via Pembina’s existing infrastructure to the Edmonton area market hub.

Earlier this year, Pembina announced a $2.44-billion Phase III expansion project to grow capacity on its Alberta pipeline network. The NEBC pipeline will feed more volumes into that system.

“The NEBC Expansion is a great opportunity for us as it further supports the economics of our Phase III Expansion,” said Wiun. “We have been expanding our infrastructure across the Alberta portion of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and are very excited to have the opportunity to extend our service to our customers in B.C. The project not only benefits our customers, it also benefits our investors as we are able to add additional value through our integrated service offering.”

Aecon stock drops nearly 12 per cent to 2014 low on bleak outlook, Q3 miss TORONTO — Aecon Group Inc. shares fell nearly 12 per cent Tuesday to the lowest level in more than a year after the construction company reported third-quarter profit that missed estimates and warned that its margins could continue to be squeezed if soft conditions continue. The stock (TSX:ARE) was down $1.69 at $12.71 by mid-morning Tuesday. The stock had earlier traded as low as $12.60, a level unvisted by Aecon’s stock since August 2013. Aecon said Monday in its third-quarter financial report that each of its segments had been affected by uncertainty and caution about the Canadian economy, particularly in the resource sector.

The Toronto-based company — which has one of Canada’s largest construction operations — said that it expects “solid financial performance” in 2014 but could have difficulty reaching a key margin target in 2015 if current conditions continue.

Governments subsidize exploration for oil reserves that can’t be used: report

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS Why subsidize the search for oil and gas that we can never burn if we want to limit the damage from climate change?

That’s the question asked in a report from an environmental think-tank, which says Canada is one of the most generous countries in the G20 towards energy exploration.

“There’s been virtual consensus among the scientific community that we have significantly more proven reserves than we can afford to burn and put into the atmosphere if we’re going to meet the international goal for climate change,” said Stephen Kretzmann, director of Oil Change International, which co-authored the report released Tuesday with the Overseas Development Institute.

“The idea that we are spending, in the G20, $88 billion every year to find more reserves is kind of crazy.”

An industry spokesman said exploration is not subsidized.

“Oil and gas has unique economics to it that necessitate certain treatment so that it has a competitive foothold in the global economy,” said Ben Brunnen, manager of fiscal and economic policy for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. “I think this report is inaccurate.”

Scientists suggest that about twothirds of the world’s current reserves of fossil fuels must remain in the ground if increasing temperatures are to be held at 2 Celsius, beyond which consequences are expected to be dire.

The Oil Change think-tank used data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development to calculate the sum total of economic assistance to energy exploration in the world’s 20 largest industrial economies. That help comes in the form of direct payments, various kinds of exploration tax breaks, favourable financing deals and the activities of state-owned companies.

In Canada, the report says, the three largest subsidies to energy companies come from the ability of both companies and certain types of shareholders to deduct exploration expenses.

As well, oilsands development has been greatly spurred by rules that allow companies to speed up depreciation, which means they can deduct their capital spending more quickly.

Using subsidy definitions from the World Trade Organization, the thinktank calculated the total value of those breaks — not including additional subsidies offered by provinces — at $928 million a year. That means every Canadian subsidizes energy exploration by $26 a year. Only Australia, where subsidies reach up to $153, is more generous among G20 countries on a per capita basis. United Kingdom subsidies are up to about $18 per capita; Russia spends about $17; the United States spends $16. The report says the annual value of state subsidies for exploration is about twice the $37-billion cash energy companies put up themselves.

“This suggests that their exploration activities are highly dependent on public support,” the report says.

Some of the measures that it considers energy industry subsidies are in fact available to all businesses, Brunnen said. As well, the oilsands depreciation break — now being phased out — doesn’t increase the amount of money a company can claim, it just allows a firm to claim it sooner.

“These aren’t subsidies so much as a deferral of tax payments.”

The nature of the industry means exploration expense tax breaks are needed, said Brunnen.

“Exploration and development require at least 10 years of activity prior to seeing some positive production.

Because of that, there has to be a structure in place, tax-wise, that offsets those high costs, so that companies will take the time to invest in a relatively high-risk, competitive global market.”

Kretzmann pointed out that G20 countries promised five years ago to phase out “inefficient” subsidies to the energy industry.

“This is the most inefficient fossil fuel subsidy you can imagine,” he said.

“They’re actually subsidizing stuff that we’ll never be able to burn.”

The subsidies take up resources that could be spent elsewhere, from health care to developing renewable energy, he said.

Brunnen said exploration activities are needed even for proven reserves.

Those reserves need to be well studied before they can be exploited, all of which is considered exploration.

“We support all forms of energy development and we’re going to need all forms of energy development in our mix,” he said.

DEARBORN, Mich. — Russell Barnett, a Ford dealer in Tennessee, is ready for aluminum.

Ford is using the metal almost exclusively in body of the 2015 version of its bestselling F-150 pickup, which starts arriving at dealerships next month. Barnett is already answering customers’ questions about the truck.

And he’s updated his repair shop not only for the F-150, but in anticipation that other Ford brands such as the Mustang will eventually make the switch from steel.

But, just in case, he ordered some extra steel-bodied 2014 pickups.

“There will be some people who won’t want to change for a while,” says Barnett, who says pickups make up around half of the annual sales at his dealership in rural Winchester.

Ford is doubling down on aluminum, which is lighter — and more expensive — than steel but just as tough.

The new truck is the company’s response to customers’ requests for a more fuel-efficient and nimbler pickup. Ford hopes the advantages outweigh customer doubts about the durability of aluminum or potential repair costs for the pricier metal.

It’s a big risk. So far this year, one out of every three vehicles Ford sold in the U.S. was an F-Series pickup. Morgan Stanley estimates F-Series trucks account for 90 per cent of Ford’s global automotive profit.

On Tuesday, it kicked off production of the new truck at its Dearborn Truck Plant, four miles from the company’s headquarters.

“Yeah, this is a risk, but it’s one well worth taking.” said Bill Ford, the company’s executive chairman, as he stood alongside the assembly line. “For our customer, this is a big, big leap forward.”

The trucks have been the bestselling vehicles in the U.S. for 32 straight years; last year, Ford sold nearly 100,000 more full-size pickups than General Motors.

Aluminum isn’t new to the auto industry, but this is the first time it will cover the entire body of such a highvolume vehicle. Ford made 647,697 F-150 pickups at its two U.S. plants last year; that’s one every 49 seconds.

If Ford’s bet pays off, it could pad its lead in the lucrative truck market.

More importantly, aluminum “future proofs” the truck — and the company — in an era of rising fuel economy standards, says Karl Brauer, a senior analyst with Kelley Blue Book.

Ford will announce the truck’s fuel economy figures later this month. That could determine if it steals customers away from the Silverado or Ram. Truck buyers are among the most loyal in the auto market. Ford says the 2015 truck will have from 5 per cent to 20 per cent better fuel economy that the current version. A figure in the higher end of that range might sway some buyers, says Jesse Toprak, chief sales analyst for the car buying site Cars.com.

“If I own a business and if I look at the numbers, and it’s going to add up over time, then I’ll think twice about it (switching brands),” Toprak says.

Ford has the disadvantage of introducing the truck as gas prices are hitting a four-year low, with the national average now below $3 a gallon.

MONTREAL — Rona plans to reopen a couple of shuttered stores next year as the home renovation retailer, sporting improved results, begins to export its Quebec-based Reno-Depot big box banner to Ontario and Alberta.

A Rona store in Calgary North that closed two years ago will reopen as a Reno-Depot, making use of 6,300 square metres of space from the old store, with the remaining 1,350 square metres being sublet.

The other Reno-Depot will open in Aurora, Ont., at a location closed last year.

Meanwhile, a former Rona regional store will open as a larger Reno-Depot in Drummondville, Que., and smaller Rona stores will open in Halifax and British Columbia.

A new affiliated store will open in Rockland, Ont. “We’re excited because we are talking about expansion here...disciplined expansion,” CEO Robert Sawyer said Tuesday during a conference call after reporting the company’s first boost in traffic in eight years.

“We are also currently analyzing other opportunities in regions where we must protect and reinforce our market share or where the investment is justified by a strong growth potential and good return on invested capital.”

Sawyer said the new Reno-Depot stores will offer everyday low prices and targeted promotions.

“We are not coming into these markets by trying to knock down everybody we just think that in these two places there’s room for us,” he told analysts.

“Our Reno-Depot is different than our competitors in these environments and hopefully we will attract customers in our stores.”

The store openings end a couple of years of downsizing that saw the closing of 17 unprofitable stores since 2012, including 11 over the past year in Ontario and Western Canada.

The closures have produced $110 million in annualized cost savings and eliminated 1,000 front-line and management positions.

Same-store sales increased three per cent in the most recent quarter, including a two per cent gain in retail and 8.3 per cent in the distribution segment.

Sawyer said store traffic and the size of purchases — or basket size — increased in the quarter, validating Rona’s recovery strategy.

Rona said the sales were up despite the stagnant economy and sustained pressure on housing starts in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.

The Reno-Depot expansion comes after the company updated its 16 big

box stores by redesigning the shopping experience and adopting a procurement policy to ensure the right amount of merchandise is always in stock.

The company said its profit surged nearly 30 per cent to $38 million or 32 cents per share for the period ended Sept. 28.

That compared with $30 million or 25 cents per share a year ago.

Excluding one-time items, adjusted profits increased 28 per cent to $38.5 million or 33 cents per share, a penny below analyst estimates of 34 cents per share.

Revenue for the national home-improvement chain was $1.167 billion, mostly stable compared with $1.169 billion a year before, despite the closure of underperforming stores that began in June 2013.

Derek Dley of Canaccord Genuity reiterated his sell rating with a $12 target price after the company resorted to lowering its gross margins to drive sales.

“The company’s repositioning of Totem stores to Rona in the west and Reno-Depot stores in Quebec had a positive impact. :However, the company experienced a highly competitive pricing environment, and elected to reduce gross margins to drive sales,” he wrote in a report.

Gross margins as a percentage of revenue declined to 25.2 per cent from 27.2 per cent.

That was more than offset by reductions in costs from store closures over the last two years.

Adjusted pre-tax operating earnings (EBITDA) increased to nearly $84 million or a 7.2 per cent margin, up from $70.7 million or 6.1 per cent margin a year ago.

The increase includes $11.4 million from higher sales and lower costs at its operations, and $2.8 million from underperforming stores.

Adjusted retail EBITDA increased to 8.6 per cent.

Rona is also renewing its share buyback program. It spent $77.4 million to purchase nearly 6.1 million shares in its previous normal course issuers bid, paying a volume weighted price of $12.69 per share.

The new buyback program, starting Nov. 18, will give Rona permission — but not an obligation — to repurchase up 9.2 million common shares.

Rona’s net debt has fallen to $188.4 million from $347.8 million a year earlier.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Rona’s shares closed up 19 cents at $13.85 on Tuesday.

HNZ executives said that there was less work from pipeline companies in Western Canada in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third quarter than in the comparable period last year, accounting for some of the revenue decline. But that was somewhat offset by strong demand for fire-related work, which tends to have higher margins than contracted jobs.

HNZâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s net income in the third quarter was $9.6 million, or 73 cents per share, which compared with a yearearlier loss of $5.8 million or 44 cents per share. The 2013 third-quarter included a $23.5-million goodwill impairment, reflected reduced long-term value of some of its intangible assets.

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL â&#x20AC;&#x201D; HNZ Group Inc. says the phased conclusion of military contracts in Afghanistan and reduced activity in the Western Canada resource sector pulled down third-quarter revenue by $18.8 million compared with the same time last year â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a decline of 22 per cent.

The Montreal-based company â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which supplies helicopter services to private-sector and government clients around the world â&#x20AC;&#x201D; had $58.1 million of revenue in the three months ended Sept. 30, down from $74.9 million in the third quarter of 2013.

HNZ (TSX:HNZ.A) has recently been operating a reduced fleet of three helicopters in Afghanistan for the United States military effort, which has been winding down.

The USTRANSCOM contract generated about $6 million of revenue in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 but it ended a month later, as scheduled, on Oct. 31.

The company â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which primarily supplies helicopters and flight crews to resource industries â&#x20AC;&#x201D; says it plans to move two of the three remaining Sikorsky S61 heavy lift helicopters from Afghanistan to Canada and the third to another location in Asia. Most of those costs will be covered under terms of the USTRANSCOM contract.

WSP Global foresees recovery next year in Canadian operations

MONTREAL â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Engineering consulting firm WSP Global hopes to see its Canadian operations rebound next year as important contracts are awarded in Western Canada and weakness in Eastern Canada is expected to continue to dissipate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully we will hit the trough in the fourth quarter of the year and hopefully see some positive momentum in 2015,â&#x20AC;? CEO Pierre Shoiry said Tuesday during a conference call to discuss third-quarter results.

As was the case following a reorganization in Britain a couple of years ago, WSP expects the fourth quarter will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;flattishâ&#x20AC;? before positive momentum starts in the first quarter.

Overall revenues grew 49 per cent in Canada last quarter thanks to the acquisition of Alberta-based Focus.

Organic sales in Canada decreased 4.4 per cent, although that was an improvement from declines of 11.3 and 13 per cent over the prior two quarters.

WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy operations in Canada continued to be slow in Eastern Canada as a result of weaker energy and industrial markets. Operations in Alberta performed well due to strong industrial and oil and gas markets. Shoiry noted energy is a cyclical industry, but is not showing any immediate sign of a major slowdown as a result of falling oil prices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now, the outlook is good. The backlog is solid. And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see how the industry evolves,â&#x20AC;? he told analysts.

In Quebec, WSP is awaiting decisions over the next three to six months on two large Montreal infrastructure projects â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the new Champlain bridge and Turcot Exchange highway project â&#x20AC;&#x201D; where WSP and its partners are among three groups in the running to win lucrative contracts.

Shoiry said the projects could represent â&#x20AC;&#x153;a good momentum swing for us if we were to be fortunate enough to work on one of those two projects.â&#x20AC;?

WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s profit surged 36 per cent to $29.1 million in the third quarter as organic growth in much of the world offset decreases in Canada.

The net income amounted to 46 cents per share, up $7.8 million or three cents per share from a year earlier. Excluding non-operating expenses related to WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s acquisition of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Montreal-based

WSP said that it had $34.4 million of net income, or 55 cents per share.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shares (TSX:WSP) closed up five per cent, gaining $1.72 or $36 on Tuesday. Revenue was $630.7 million, up 28.6 from a year earlier, while net revenue excluding subconsultants was $537.4 million, up 31.8 per cent.

WSP was expected to earn 53 cents of net income and $520.35 million of revenues, according to analysts polled

by Thomson Reuters.

Shoiry said the results demonstrated the company has made progress in pursuing its growth strategy both organically and from acquisitions.

Global organic growth was 12.3 per cent, helped by a 6.3 per cent favourable foreign currency adjustments and an acceleration from two per cent internal growth in the second quarter.

Maxim Sytchev of Dundee Capital Markets said WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s results were strong, especially compared with competitors who missed forecasts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s results stand in stark contrast, an impressive achievement especially with all the moving merge and acquisition parts,â&#x20AC;? he wrote in a report.

Meanwhile, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deeper U.S. footprint following the Parsons Brinckerhoff acquisition puts it in a position to profit from recovery in the U.S. economy, he said.

The US$1.24-billion acquisition of Parsons Brinckerhoff, the professional services arm of Balfour Beatty, closed Oct. 31. The deal had financial backing from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the Caisse de depot, both of which increased their holdings in WSP. In the United States, revenues were up 25 per cent, including half from internal operations driven by strong buildings and infrastructure markets.

United Kingdom net revenues grew 31 per cent on a 16.5 per cent increase in organic revenues. Northern Europe continued to face weakness in Germany that was offset by strength in WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Swedish operations.

The companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s net revenue in the rest of the world was up 28 per cent overall and 17.6 per cent internally on strength in the Middle East and the recovery of WSPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Asian and Australian businesses.

MARKETS CLOSE TORONTO â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Toronto stock market closed higher Tuesday as traders bought up gold stocks that have come under severe selling pressure recently and digested a mixed bag of earnings reports.

The S&P/TSX composite index climbed 50.47 points to 14,760.27.

It is a relatively quiet session with government offices, banks and Treasury markets closed for Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the United States. On international markets, the Canadian dollar ticked 0.35 of a cent higher to 88.27 cents US late in the afternoon.

U.S. indexes were little changed with the Dow Jones industrials up 1.16 points to 17,614.9 while the Nasdaq gained 8.94 points to 4,660.56 and the S&P 500 index rose 1.42 points to 2,039.68 .

The gold sector led advancers, up about four per cent after falling six per cent on Monday.

The December gold contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange erased early losses to close up $3.20 at US$1,163 an ounce.

But bullion prices have fallen steadily amid an end to the Federal Reserveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s massive bond buying stimulus program, a steady flow of positive American economic data and a rising U.S. dollar.

“It was a bad reaction, I think, off of the first goal,” Edmonton captain Andrew Ference said. “The first few minutes were OK, and then after the first goal it was very scrambly.”

Nashville has scored first in just five of 15 games.

Cullen extended the lead at 9:21 of the first. Fasth stopped Seth Jones’s shot from the high slot, but Cullen connected on a diving backhand that just sneaked inside the right post.

Cullen played his first home game of the season. He sustained an upper-body injury in the team’s first preseason game and returned for the

start of Nashville’s recently completed six-game road trip.

Ben Scrivens replaced Fasth at the start of the second period. Fasth stopped 14 of the 17 shots he faced in the first. Scrivens made 18 saves and did not allow a goal.

Pouliot got Edmonton on the scoreboard at 31 seconds of the second when he beat Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.

Rinne finished with 21 saves.

Yakupov drew the Oilers within a goal when he scored at 14:42 of the second off of a nice pass from David Perron.

“They are a very skilled team, a fast team and we knew they would push back,” Cullen said.

“I think we would have preferred to probably play a little better in the second and keep the game under control, but sometimes that happens.

It was nice to respond with a good third period.”

Raptors edge Magic to stay in Three teams have control in Eastern Conference questions at QB

Raptors 104 Magic 100 TORONTO — Having just given up a three-pointer and trailing by 11 points late in the first half, Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey called a timeout. Kyle Lowry took the ball and spiked it hard to the ground in frustration.

Lowry drew on that frustration, and, coupled with a huge fourth-quarter effort by Toronto’s second unit, lifted the Raptors to a 104-100 victory Tuesday over the Orlando Magic — extending their Eastern Conference-best record to 7-1. They’re a perfect 5-0 at the Air Canada Centre.

“Down the stretch in that fourth quarter, we were able to get stops when we needed stops and Kyle put the team on his back and was that leader out there that we needed, ran the team and set up the offensive plays, and we were able to hit shots,” Patrick Patterson said.

On a night that saw Toronto trail almost the entire game, a key sequence down the stretch saw Lowry feed James Johnson for a running dunk, grab two rebounds, then draw a foul and drain two free throws to give the Raptors a three-point lead with a minute to play.

Lowry would finish with 19 points while Terrence Ross poured in 17 more, and DeMar DeRozan added 16.

Johnson came off the bench to grab a game-high 10 rebounds, while Lou Williams scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth, and Patterson had nine of his 12 points in the final quarter.

Lowry credited the second unit with the win.

“We lean on each other,” he said. “Tonight we tip our hats to Lou, Greivis (Vasquez), J.J., Pat. Their intensity, their defensive pressure,” he added, when asked how they changed the game. “They really got into them, got into the ball. They stuck to the game plan to a T.” Evan Fournier led the Magic (2-6) with 24 points, while Tobias Harris added 23, and Channing Frye finished with 19.

The Raptors, wearing their camouflage uniforms in honour of Remembrance Day, were coming off two solid defensive efforts in wins over Washington and Philadelphia.

But their poor defensive habits were back with a vengeance as the Raptors fell behind by double digits early to the Magic, and trailed almost the entire game.

“Where we want to go as a team, we can’t be playing like that,” Casey said.

Patterson blamed the first three quarters on “lack of effort.”

“Our inability to communicate in transition, them getting easy buckets in transition, easy scores at the paint, and just on the perimeter on the three. . . We weren’t able to follow the scouting report and it showed those first three quarters,” he said.

“I thought during (the fourth quarter), we were able to communicate, talk a lot better, help each other out, and finish the play with a solid rebound.”

A basket by Harris pulled the Magic to within a point with 55 seconds to play, but a free throw by Patterson, followed by a miss by Harris, clinched Toronto’s victory.

“It was a test of our character and we got the win,” Vasquez said. “It wasn’t pretty, stars didn’t play the way we wanted them to play, but we got the second unit playing the

right way, so we’ve got to give credit to James Johnson and Lou Williams coming off the bench and doing a good job and the rest of the guys bringing a lot of energy.”

Vasquez referred to Johnson as “spicy,” and when asked to elaborate, said: “He’s spicy in a way that everybody knows he’s a little crazy. Personally I love his craziness. . .10 rebounds in 15 minutes, that’s energy, you can’t really teach that.

“You need somebody crazy in the locker-room. He’s not afraid to fight for you, he’ll die for you, for the whole team.”

The Magic shot 48 per cent on the night to Toronto’s 46.

Toronto had a narrow 40-39 advantage on the boards.

The Raptors’ poor start on the defensive end showed in the Magic’s 58 per cent shooting in the first quarter. Frye hit all three of his three-point attempts in the frame, and Orlando took a 32-24 advantage into the second.

A three by Fournier put the Magic up 60-49 with a minute to go in the second half, Orlando’s biggest lead of the game to that point. The visitors went into the dressing room at halftime up 60-51.

The status of Mike Reilly and three other quarterbacks are making for some very interesting storylines heading into the CFL playoffs.

The 12-6 Eskimos host the 10-8 Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division semifinal Sunday with the winner to visit Calgary in the division final Nov. 23. But there is uncertainty regarding who’ll be under centre for Edmonton.

Reilly was the starter for all 12 of Edmonton’s victories this season but there are reports he suffered a broken bone in his foot during the Eskimos’ 37-3 win over the B.C. Lions on Nov. 1.

Reilly didn’t play in Edmonton’s 24-17 loss to Saskatchewan on Saturday as the club had already clinched second place in the West. Thirdstringer Pat White suffered a head injury in the game and is also questionable for this weekend.

If the six-foot-three 230-pound Reilly can’t play, Matt Nichols will start for Edmonton. Nichols is a five-year CFL veteran but 0-3 as a starter this season.

Eskimos GM Ed Hervey was unavailable for comment Tuesday. On Monday, he told Edmonton radio station 630 CHED that the club was still gathering medical information on Reilly but, ’We do have reason to be concerned.“ The Eskimos were off Monday and Tuesday and are scheduled to resume practising Wednesday.

Matt Scott was Edmonton’s third-string quarterback against Saskatchewan. If neither Reilly nor White can play Sunday, the Eskimos will have to find a new No. 3 behind Scott.

Reilly threw for 3,327 yards and 16 TDs this season, completing 64.6 per cent of his attempts with 11 interceptions.

Reilly was also the league’s top-rushing quarterback with 616 yards (7.8-yard average) and eight touchdowns.

Nichols had a 62.3 per cent completion average (94-of-151) for 1,014 yards but threw more interceptions (five) than TDs (four). He also ran for just 41

yards on 16 attempts (2.6-yard average) with two touchdowns.

Edmonton isn’t the only team with quarterback issues.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have begun their playoff preparations unsure whether incumbent Darian Durant or veteran Kerry Joseph will start in Edmonton.

Durant hasn’t played since Sept. 7 after suffering an elbow injury in a 30-24 win over Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan was 8-2 with Durant in the lineup but just 2-6 without him as Joseph was the starter in Saturday’s win.

Durant was recently cleared to return to practice.

Head coach Corey Chamblin expects the star pivot to be on the Riders’ 46-man roster but will wait until Thursday to decide Durant’s status for the playoff game. Chamblin said a best-case scenario would be to have both Durant and Joseph available to play against Edmonton.

“I think having those guys in either order is good,” Chamblin told reporters. “And if one of the guys starts to struggle a bit then we have something to go from there.

“That’s the thought right now. Hopefully it gets to that point because they’re our two strongest quarterbacks and they’re both starting quarterbacks and have a lot of experience.”

Experience would certainly be an asset for the Riders, who face the Eskimos for the third time since Oct. 19. Edmonton won two of the meetings but the defending Grey Cup champions halted a five-game losing streak Saturday.

“I think it comes down to how your roster is set,” Chamblin said. “What’s your personnel, who is playing, who is not playing?

“Both teams will come with (new) wrinkles and if you can survive their wrinkles and be stout (against their attack), then that team will win.”

There’s also quarterback news in the East Division semifinal involving B.C. and the Montreal Alouettes. The Lions have placed veteran Travis Lulay on their 46-man roster, allowing him to resume practising. Lulay, who guided B.C. to the ’11 Grey Cup title, re-injured his right shoulder Sept. 5 in a win over Ottawa.

It was Lulay’s first start in almost a year.

Raonic falls to Murray at ATP Finals ships over the years, dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 decision to Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Despite a 0-2 record, Toronto’s Nestor and Zimonjic are not officially out of contention for the semifinals, but they, like Raonic, will need to win their final group match to have any hope of advancing.

“Not so great I would imagine,” a despondent Nestor said of his team’s chances. “We’re trying to win the last match and that’s it.

“It would be good to win this last match, you always want to finish a season on a better note. When you don’t do so well you are motivated to try and get back into the winner’s circle.”

The defeat was the second for the pair in four meetings with the French team this season, with Nestor and Zimonjic winning at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and in Sydney.

Nestor and Zimonjic were defeated in just under 90 minutes, with six aces and four double-faults. The team saved 12 of the 14 break points they faced but were able to break the French serve only twice in 10 attempts.

The second-seeded duo went down in the 29-minute opening set after Nestor was broken in the seventh game. But in the second, the veteran pair fought back as Zimonjic saved three break points to hold for 5-all. A break of Roger-Vasselin in the final game sent the match to a tiebreak set.

Nestor and Zimonjic trailed 2-4 and faced five match points at 4-9, with Nestor pounding a service return forehand into the net to lose.

“They were better and returned much better in key moments,” Nestor said. “They came up with big shots and put a lot of balls at our feet.”

Nestor and Zimonjic won the title in London in 2008 and 2009. Nestor, who is making a record 15th appearance at the season-ending event, also claimed the trophy in 2007 with Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and 2011 with Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

LONDON — Canadian Milos Raonic lost his second straight match at the ATP Finals on Tuesday and is now a longshot to make it to the weekend semifinals at the season-ending event.

Raonic dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Britain’s Andy Murray to fall to 0-2 in round-robin play. The Canadian will face Japan’s Kei Nishikori on Thursday in a must-win match.

Raonic could not seem to get his usually strong service game on track in the 91-minute match. The hard-serving right-hander was limited to just four aces and his first-serve percentage barely cleared 50 per cent.

“I didn’t do my job today,” said Raonic. “To be frank, my first serve percentage at this moment, at least today, shouldn’t have been above 40 per cent.

I started hitting serves 115 miles an hour to get it past 50 per cent.

“I haven’t served well, I’ve been too passive on the court. I’ve been trying to beat the two guys playing their tennis and that’s not going to work for me.”

The Canadian was forced to save two break points in the fourth game, then lost serve on a forehand error as Murray took a 4-2 lead. Raonic later saved two set points before eventually dropping the opener in 37 minutes.

Murray picked up a late break in the second set to move ahead 6-5 and completed the victory when Raonic sent a return long.

Raonic, from Thornhill, cannot lose a set against Nishikori in order to keep his faint semifinal hopes alive.

“I have some slim possibilities,” Raonic said. “I have to win in straight sets, but I’m not going to start counting games now.”

GLOBAL WARMING’S HARSH IMPACT ON WEATHER PATTERNS INSPIRES LOCAL ARTIST DAVID MORE’S LATEST PAINTINGS

BY LANA MICHELIN ADVOCATE STAFF Central Alberta artist David More often has his eyes to the skies — and he’s been troubled by changes he’s noticing.

Extreme weather patterns, due to global warming, are causing more turmoil above us, said More, whose latest paintings on this theme are showing in the Vanishing Point exhibit at The Coconut Room, upstairs at Sunworks in Red Deer.

The Benalto resident can trace his interest in unusual weather progressions back to a hot afternoon on July 14, 2000.

More was painting the prairie landscape just north of his community when he noticed the buildup of strange storm clouds, like nothing he had ever seen before.

He was suddenly overcome by an ominous impulse. “Something compelled me to reach down and grab a big swab of red paint and smear it on the canvas and work it into the clouds I was painting,” he recalled.

A few seconds later he was perplexed by what he’d done. The retired Red Deer College art instructor remembers questioning his instinct, since the unsettling red on his canvas didn’t match anything he was actually observing in nature.

“I was fascinated, but it also frightened me.”

More was even more shaken that evening after learning that a tornado killed 12 people in a campground near Pine Lake. The deadly twister was thought to have originated from a storm cell that began building in the exact vicinity where he had been painting at 3 p.m. that day.

“Some instinct that I had scared the hell out of me, because somehow I knew — yet I didn’t want to know ... I didn’t want to be a forecaster of doom,” said the artist.

His prescience weighed on his mind. “For years, I didn’t know how to cope with it,” said More.

Although he set aside his first painting of the redtinged sky, titled Storm of Sorrows (More refuses to sell it), he ended up with something of a sky obsession. “I thought: how do I deal with this, as an artist?”

He began regularly painting the more turbulent cloud patterns that emerged overhead. “Slowly, as the decade wore on, I came to terms with it,” said the 67-year-old, who has become attuned to climate change.

Most weather experts now agree that global warming is causing more extreme weather patterns, including wind storms, flooding and wildfires, on the Prairies and everywhere else.

The 10 paintings and three pastels drawings in his Vanishing Point exhibit, are divided between East Coast seascapes and Central Alberta landscapes.

More said peculiar clouds are regularly hovering over all of us — and he sought to capture some of their strangeness and scale in his artworks.

There’s a reoccurring theme of immense nature dwarfing humans and our man-made world.

In Figure on a Shore, viewers can hardly pinpoint the tiny person walking along the ocean in New Brunswick. A monstrous purple cloud stretches like an arm overhead, contrasting sharply with the orange sunset sky. “It’s almost pretty, but there’s something not quite right about it,” observed More.

In Prairie Flash, three grain bins are made insignificant by an ominously churning sky. Some acid undertones in this landscape painted north of Benalto suggests the unnaturalness of the scene.

The artist admitted there could be Biblical allusions to the painting Fire and Hope, which contains a tiny country church found east of Eckville. Rising plumes of white smoke from a wildfire are being pushed forward by the wind and contrast sharply with looming black clouds overhead.

Morning at Percé was painted on Quebec’s Gaspé peninsula and shows the famous flat-topped rocks that can be seen from shore. Although giant to us, they are small in relation to the unrestful air movements above. More noted the absolute calmness of the water is contrasted with the disturbance. “Something is going to happen. It’s a suspended moment.”

Another striking water scene is Last Sailing at Percé: From a tiny Gaspé village, a miniscule ferry crosses ocean waters that look eerily luminescent, reflecting the yellowish sky. More used a pallet knife to create a windswept atmosphere.

The artist often uses an unexpected salmon hue to suggest unnaturalness in his clouds. The colour is often considered decorative but “put into a different context, it changes quite a bit,’ said More.

He admitted the sky paintings offered a release, since they allowed him to “exorcise” some of his feelings about climate change, the same way as his earlier series of forest paintings with acidic hues allowed him to say something about his acid rain anxieties.

The artist is pleased that many industries have cut emissions to reduce the problem of acid rain over the past couple of decades. But climate change has emerged as even more of a seemingly insurmountable global problem.

“I feel powerless about global warming,” said More, who hopes to stir discussion and awareness of it through his powerful and subtly disturbing paintings.

“I’ve discovered I’m not very good at shouting my message out and I’m not strong enough to beat people over the head because a factory is polluting the air ... so I asked myself, how can I deal with what I’m feeling?”

Commercial gallery launched downtown

BY LANA MICHELIN ADVOCATE STAFF Paul Harris often pondered how a city of nearly 100,000 people could not have a commercial art gallery.

Well now Red Deer does.

Harris and his partner Terry Warke are turning the retail space they own beside their Sunworks store on Ross Street into a new centre for art sales.

The 700-square-foot storefront used to house the Petit Jaune Fleur florist before it moved to Alexander Way. It was transformed last week into a gallery with hardwood floors and white walls.

The space opened on the weekend with an exhibit of 17 forest and garden paintings by artist David More. The Benalto painter is also showing more of his oil paintings of skyscapes in the Coconut Room Cafe, upstairs at Sunworks. Both exhibits will run to early January.

Harris said he’d been wondering what to do with the empty retail space just west of Sunworks, when the subject of Red Deer having no commercial art galleries came up. Suddenly, he

knew exactly what to do with the storefront.

Harris made the decision to open the art space, knowing that it’s been hard for commercial galleries to make a go of it.

“I know they’ve struggled to keep the lights on and staff them.”

Red Deer’s last commercial gallery, bilton contemporary art, closed in 2010. And the Gallery IS, on Alexander Way, was turned into art studio space, although it still opens to the public for special shows.

But Harris believes the benefits of having a new gallery operating with access through Sunworks is that his current store staff can also staff and curate it. “We already have lights and staff, so it’s natural to extend into that space.

“Now people have just got to buy some art. ...”

The business owner and Red Deer city councillor still has lots of details to work out — including the gallery’s name and the kind of art it will sell.

Nasal spray vaccine may not protect young kids against swine flu

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — The nasal spray version of the flu vaccine did not protect young children against swine flu last winter and might not work again this year, health officials said Thursday.

Preliminary results from three studies found that AstraZeneca’s FluMist had little or no effect in children against swine flu. That was the most common bug making people sick last winter.

Because this year’s version of FluMist is the same, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it’s possible the spray vaccine won’t work for swine flu this season, either.

But officials say the spray is still OK to use. Though the flu season is just getting started, early tracking suggests swine flu — the H1N1 strain — won’t be a big player this year. Other strains are expected to be the major threat and the vaccine works against those, said Dr. Alicia Fry, a CDC flu vaccine expert.

That’s why she’s choosing a squirt up the nose for her 7-year-old daughter. And “she’d rather have FluMist than a shot” in the arm, Fry said.

But another flu expert, Vanderbilt University’s Dr. William Schaffner, said pediatricians might want to opt for flu shots for their young patients “just to be on the safe side.”

Why the nasal spray didn’t seem to work last year is a mystery: it has strong track record. The company said inadequate refrigeration of some doses shipped last summer could be an explanation.

Annual flu vaccinations are recommended for all Americans ages 6 months and older. Flu shots are made from killed flu virus. FluMist is made

using live but weakened virus, and is only approved for ages 2 to 49. The vaccine’s makeup can change from year to year, based on what three or four strains are expected to be circulating.

For years, studies have indicated FluMist is the better choice for young children because it prompts a better immune response in kids who have never been sick with the flu. In June, a federal scientific panel took the unusual step of advising doctors to give FluMist to healthy young kids instead of a shot, if available.

Confidence in that decision was shaken a bit last week during a meeting in Atlanta of the same panel — the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices — when a CDC official presented the results of the three observational studies. The research was done separately by the CDC, the Air Force and AstraZeneca.

“Everyone was sitting around, scratching their heads” at the puzzling results, said Schaffner, who attended the meeting and helped review the research for the panel.

The panel did not vote to change any of its guidance, but there was a consensus more investigation is needed quickly.

“We are working with the CDC to try and understand why this observation is being seen,” said Dr. Chris Ambrose, AstraZeneca’s vice-president of U.S. medical affairs.

The H1N1 swine flu strain first emerged in 2009 and caused a global pandemic. It had been mostly in the background since then but made a strong showing last year.

Flu vaccine effectiveness tends to vary from year to year and from age group to age group. Last winter, flu vaccine was about 60 per cent effective overall, which experts consider to be

And there was no unusual number of flu-related deaths in children, despite FluMist’s apparent lack of effectiveness against swine flu.

The bulk of flu-related hospitalizations and deaths last winter were in people ages 25 to 64. Swine flu has a history of being particularly dangerous in younger adults.

The CDC issued a statement Thursday that detailed the results of the three studies. The AstraZeneca study was the largest, involving more than 1,000 children.

It found protection was terrible for children ages 2 through 8 but about normal for older children.

It also found lower effectiveness for doses distributed in August and early September. The H1N1 component is

easily ruined if the vaccine is not carefully refrigerated. Company officials are investigating the possibility that late-summer lots were exposed to too much heat somewhere along the line, Ambrose said. Records show the lots were kept at the proper temperature while in the company’s possession, he said.

Of children ages 2 to 17 who get flu vaccine, 44 per cent get FluMist, according to the drugmaker.

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement Thursday, echoing the CDC’s advice that it’s important that children be vaccinated — with either a shot or nasal spray.

U.S. govt proposes Medicare coverage of lung cancer screening

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — Medicare may soon begin paying for yearly scans to detect lung cancer in certain current or former heavy smokers.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Monday issued a long-awaited proposal to begin covering the screening for high-risk beneficiaries if their doctors agree they meet the criteria.

Lung cancer kills nearly 160,000 Americans a year, in part because tumors aren’t usually detected early enough for treatment to stand a good chance. A major study found low-dose CT scans of the lungs of people at especially high risk could cut their chances

of dying from lung cancer by 20 per cent.

Last December, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended the test for certain people ages 55 to 80 who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years, or the equivalent. Under the Affordable Care Act, that meant private insurers had to begin covering the screening.

But the health care law doesn’t require Medicare to pay for the scans, which can cost $100 to $400. CMS had to decide the issue separately, and its advisers questioned if the test really would benefit seniors. Only a quarter of participants in that lung screening study were 65 or older, and no one over 76 was screened.

Among the issues was whether the

test would catch too many seniors with multiple health problems who couldn’t withstand cancer treatment. Plus, screening tests can cause false alarms that require invasive follow-up tests to rule out cancer.

Monday, CMS proposed covering the test for certain high-risk Medicare recipients, but capped the age for testing at 74. It said the decision “strikes an appropriate balance” between access to the screening and ensuring that benefits outweigh the harms.

To be eligible, Medicare patients would be current smokers or have quit within the last 15 years, and have that 30-pack-year smoking history, verified by a health provider’s written order for the test.

Before the first CT scan,

they would have to receive counselling about the pros and cons of screening — and about the importance of quitting smoking.

“Tens of thousands of lives will be saved by providing America’s seniors with fair and equitable access to the same lifesaving lung cancer screening that is now being offered to those with private insurance,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose of the Lung Cancer Alliance, which had requested Medicare’s decision.

The alliance estimated 4 million Medicare recipients would be eligible for screening.

Medicare’s proposal is open for public comment for 30 days; a final decision is due in February.

Ottawa’s fiscal update to reveal magnitude of projected surplus OTTAWA — The Harper government will deliver its fall fiscal and economic update Wednesday, an outlook expected to answer a key question: How big will the projected 2015 election-year surplus be?

Finance Minister Joe Oliver has remained confident the government will eliminate the deficit next year, even as the world economy struggles and Canada deals with the sudden drop in the price of oil — a significant influence on Ottawa’s bottom line.

Analysts and budget observers, meanwhile, have forecasted Canada’s bank balance will grow along with the expanding U.S. economy.

Amid the careful optimism, the government has already begun earmarking the projected surplus.

In recent weeks, the Conservative government unveiled a multibilliondollar tableau of cost-cutting initiatives for families with children under 18.

Oliver, who will issue the update at a downtown Toronto hotel, is expected to reveal Wednesday just how much cash is left over.

Internal document urges government to raise cap on aboriginal education OTTAWA — Documents show the federal government’s own department believes it needs to spend more money if aboriginal children are to get the same kind of education as other kids in Canada.

Since the mid-to-late 1990s, there has been a two per cent cap on the amount that spending on aboriginal education can grow each year.

But an internal Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development document says the cap is too low and needs to be more than doubled, to 4.5 per cent.

The document is among several filed as part of First Nations advocate Cindy Blackstock’s long battle at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Blackstock is fighting to get aboriginal children the same level of funding from the federal government as nonaboriginal kids get from the provinces.

The document also shows Aboriginal Affairs has shifted half a billion dollars meant for infrastructure over a six-year period to try to cover shortfalls in social and education programs.

WINNIPEG — The family of a 16-year-old Manitoba girl who was beaten and ended up in a frigid river is thankful she survived the attack and is now recovering.

Grand Chief David Harper is a distant relative of Rinelle Harper and has visited her and her family in hospital.

He says the girl is slowly recovering her memory after taking a bad beating, but she doesn’t remember much about what happened the night she was attacked.

Police say Rinelle was out with friends Friday when she was attacked near a downtown bridge and ended up in the Assiniboine River.

She managed to pull herself out of the water onto a walkway, where she was discovered by a passerby and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Harper says Rinelle is originally from the Garden Hill First Nation in northern Manitoba, but has been attending a high school in Winnipeg for the last two years and is in Grade 11.

The grand chief says most Harpers from that part of Manitoba are related and Rinelle is the great niece of the late MP Elijah Harper.

Police took the unusual step of identifying the victim, with her parents’ permission, in the hope of cracking the case.

Magnotta told psychiatrist that letter to tabloid wasn’t foreshadowing murder MONTREAL — A psychiatrist says Luka Rocco Magnotta told her that an email he sent a British tabloid foretelling the murder of a human being was meant only as a threat to a journalist who’d ambushed him.

The Crown contends the communication to the London Sun suggests Magnotta was planning a slaying up to six months in advance of Jun Lin’s killing in May 2012.

But defence witness Marie-Frederique Allard testified at Magnotta’s first-degree murder trial today he was only trying to intimidate reporter Alex West, who’d interviewed him at a London hotel a few days earlier about videos showing cats getting killed.

It was Magnotta himself who had published the videos, which angered animal-rights activists who were trying to track him down.

Allard says Magnotta has always maintained he didn’t plan to kill anyone and that he believes writing the email in December 2011 was “stupid” and showed a lack of judgment.

The Crown has withdrawn charges of first-degree murder, sexual interference and aggravated sexual assault against Jason Allen Kines.

A Crown attorney told Court of Queen’s Bench in Brandon that new DNA evidence and uncertainty over bite marks put the case in doubt.

Venecia Audy died in August 2006 at her home in Bowsman, Man., from injuries that included a fractured skull, lacerated liver, broken ribs, numerous bruises and several human bite marks.

Kines, who was dating the girl’s mother at the time, was found not guilty of the charges at a trial in 2012.

The Manitoba Court of Appeal overturned the acquittal and ordered a new trial, but the Crown’s decision means that will not go ahead.

Accident, disease, genetics, and neglect are just some. Nobody can help it if they hit a dashboard in a vehicle accident and damage their teeth.

Genetics does play a role – I have one very large family where almost everyone over 30 is in full dentures. Someone didn't smile on them genetically, and their teeth are very susceptible to decay. Neglect comes under a few headings. Patients actually show up at their dental office sometimes with food caked to their teeth. One guy told our hygienist 'No point in me brushing my teeth. You're being paid to do that!' His mouth was an oral garbage can. He had a brand new truck with nary a piece of dust on it – clearly that was where he spent his effort. Pity he had less respect for his mouth than he did for his glossy paint job! Neglect comes under other names too. How about 'crystal meth'? Using that drug is the equivalent of pouring nitric acid on your teeth. In dentistry we see a lot of that – and the term 'meth head' is quite common. If the patient is alone, we ask them directly and we receive the truth back the majority of the time. They usually state they 'used' to do it but no longer. If Mom or Dad is present, it is almost universally denied and we often get accusations from well-meaning parents who are outraged that we might accuse their child of being a drug addict. A parent cannot understand why their child's teeth are disintegrating but if we tell them the reason they choose to shoot the messenger!

Dentists invest over 6 figures for our education. We may invest 7 figures to outfit a modern dental office. Professional team members need to be paid market value or we couldn't attract good ones. The overhead in an average dental office in Canada today often tops 80% of revenue. Drivers of new automobiles pay $138 an hour for labour at car dealerships, yet never quibble. That same person, upon hearing that years of neglect have contributed to severe deterioration in their mouth and are facing a substantial reconstruction fee often say 'So you want me to buy a new BMW for you?' The true answer is that the actual revenue on many of those cases might simply contribute to the next legislated change in dental equipment. Recently we were hit with new regulations and averaged $40,000 each in new sterilization costs!

Teeth require maintenance. In your husband's case, he appears to have deferred maintenance. There is a cost to fix that, and I am confident your dentist isn't overcharging. For his piece of mind, I'd be happy to provide him with a second opinion. It is a significant investment and you are wise to check it out.

Short reflects on comedy, tragedy in new memoir

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO — Martin Short says the reason he found the strength to keep going after his wife’s death is simple: “We go on.”

“Whatever we think it’s going to be, the sun will come up and you have to eat lunch,” he said. “It’s just life. We are all going to perish. I think we all naturally, understandably, live in denial of that.”

Martin Short Short, 64, reflects on both comedy and tragedy in his new memoir I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend. The book details his journey to the top, from his early years as a member of Toronto’s Second City improv troupe to the set of Saturday Night Live and to the big screen in films.

He writes that the death of his beloved wife of 30 years, Nancy Dolman, in 2010 is “by far the most awful thing I’ve been through.” But he says he found strength for the sake of his three adult children. The night before Nancy died, Short told his youngest son Henry, “This will make you stronger. This will make you more determined.”

“If I had no children, maybe I could have said, ‘You know what? That’s it for a public life,”’ Short said. “But I have three kids, so they look to you to see what’s the next step. ‘Do we still have a family? Are we still a united front?’ It’s up to papa to make sure.”

Short recalled throwing himself into work in the time after his wife’s death.

In a notorious episode of the Today show in March 2012, host Kathie Lee Gifford asked Short about his “great” marriage, unaware Nancy had died.

He addresses the incident in his book, saying he has never felt any malice toward Gifford for the gaffe. “Besides, Kathie Lee wasn’t wrong,” he writes. “Nan and I did have one of the greatest marriages in show business.”

While growing up in Hamilton, Ont., Short’s four older siblings and both parents were constantly cracking jokes: “It was trickle-down funny,” he said.

But his youth was marked by loss as well. When Short was 12, his brother David died in a car accident. Then when he was 17, his mother died of cancer, and two years later, his father died of complications from a stroke.

Short said writing about painful memories wasn’t necessarily “cathartic.”

“I remember everything. I’ve lived with everything. So there were no surprises,” he said. “What you don’t know when you start is how open you’re going to be: what you’re going to tell, what you’re not going to tell, what you feel comfortable telling.

“As you write it, you start to realize that it can’t be a bunch of anecdotes about funny things that happened when I met Richard Burton. It has to have a little depth and understanding.

That’s why you write the book, because you gained wisdom in life and maybe you can give some of that wisdom to other people.”

Rosewater no laughing matter

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — A bleary-eyed Jon Stewart is sitting outside his offices reflecting on his directorial debut, Rosewater, a drama about the unjust imprisonment of journalist Maziar Bahari in Iran.

It’s the morning after The Daily Show broadcast live for the midterm elections, including a sketch that reported from the campaign headquarters of the night’s big winner — Money, as played by a hard-partying Rob Riggle — and the desolate base of the night’s loser, Ideas.

Humour, Stewart says, is an “amoeba-like substance” that can grow in even the harshest of conditions, like life at the bottom of the ocean.

“It may be grotesque and absurd life. It may be a fish with a crab growing out of its head that lights up like a Lite-Brite,” says Stewart. “But it’s there.”

For 16 years on The Daily Show, Stewart has found comedy by wading through the muck of TV news, partisan politics and some horrific current events. Rosewater may seem like a story far afield from the satire practiced on the The Daily Show, but Stewart was drawn to the true tale by Bahari’s levity in recounting his 118 days imprisoned and tortured after reporting on Iran’s 2009 elections.

In his memoir, Then They Came for Me, Bahari (played by Gael Garcia Bernal in the film) relates an uncommon sympathy for his interrogator, recognizing the absurdity of an authoritative regime that would so desperately fear his opinions. In a film about preserving one’s sanity in an insane system, the moment of triumph is a joyful, overflowing laugh.

“It’s a process that I need to use for myself,” says Stewart. “That’s the way I process events.”

Rosewater is a subtle mission statement of Stewart’s worldview, one where humour is an essential tool for disarming the powerful, for claiming one’s humanity.

“Certainty is the enemy of humour,” says Stewart. “Authoritative regimes are nothing if not certain and dogmatic. One of the things about (The Daily Show) is a lack of certainty. It really is confusion being worked out through whatever silliness we’ve thrown out there.”

Stewart was connected to Bahari because he appeared in a segment by Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones, filmed in Iran. (The footage was later treated as evidence that Bahari was a spy.) After Bahari was released, a friendship developed between him and Stewart.

Stewart offered to help Bahari get his book adapted into a film, but when four months went by without interest, an impatient Stewart wrote the script himself. He would meet Bahari at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast to go over notes, and write in the evening after taping The Daily Show and putting his two kids to bed.

“I basically did what we do here: I threw a bunch of cards up on the board and I structured it,” says Stewart of his first stab at screenwriting.

Stewart shot the film last summer in Jordan while on hiatus from The Daily Show. In extreme heat, working with a largely international cast and with a small budget, the novice director summoned naturalistic performances from his actors.

“Once you’ve survived doing standup at a Fuddruckers outside of Rochester, Jordan is much more luxurious,” says Stewart.

Returning to The Daily Show, he moved the film’s editor into a coat room at the show’s offices. In between work on the show, he ran and up and down floors to sneak in editing sessions.

“There were definitely moments

where I thought, ‘OK, you always wondered just how far you can push this.

Well, now you know,”’ says Stewart.

But the results are impressive, particularly for a first-time filmmaker.

Stewart, said The New York Times, “turns out to be a real filmmaker.”

“Who knew?” says Steve Carell, the former “Daily Show” correspondent.

“I had no idea he was a filmmaker, and he is. Right out of the block, he has a voice and a style.”

Part of what makes Rosewater unique is its resistance to Hollywoodizing Bahari’s tale. Just as Stewart — ever a champion of nuance — laments the media’s penchant for exaggeration, he recoiled at making “a one-dimensional, victim-versus-monster tortureporn movie.”

“There’s an infrastructure of torture that is officious, business-like, absurd, Kafkaesque,” says Stewart. “Violence is there, but there is a much broader context that it all lives in.”

Bahari, who now lives in London, says he and Stewart share a resentment of those who believe they have “a monopoly on truth.”

“It’s futile to regard a government or a person as a monster or evil,” says Bahari. “There’s no evil or monster.

There’s just human beings in bad systems.”

Will Stewart, whose Comedy Central contract is up next year, make another movie? The form he operates in, he says, doesn’t matter.

“It’s a journey. It’s a conversation,” says Stewart. “One thing I won’t do is write music or sing.”

ROBERTS Bryan May 2, 1957 - Oct. 28, 2014 Born and raised in Calgary, Bryan always had a dog by his side. Growing up in Canyon Meadows, he found his other best friend, Jay Westman.

From their early start together with paper routes, cutting grass, gas jockey at the neighbourhood Shell station, Bryan and Jay were a team that was never broken. Bryan was the very proud first employee of Jayman Homes, working by his dear friend’s side for 30 years. All of Bryan’s friends and family knew that if you had a project to build, a car to fix, or a new deck to build, Bryan was the, “I’ll show you how guy”, working by your side teaching what he knew. Clara, his wife of 10 years, recently commented that they would give each other new decks or a new project to build for their anniversary gifts. Even in his last months, Bryan made sure that Clara had all the womanly tools and equipment to maintain their happy place, their home, (recently referred to as a “Disney Frontier Land”), in the Garrington area west of Bowden. In the winter, Bryan and Clara travelled south in their motorhome, with their dogs by their side to Pine, Arizona, where they spent time with his Arizona family, Kathy and Roy. Of course, there were more projects there too, and a new deck to build! In the past two years, Bryan achieved all his wishes.

He had all his children on an unforgettable family legacy cruise. he completed his dream cabins at his home for his and Clara’s children, with the help of family and some very kind neighbours. He travelled to places he wanted to see and he leaves us a content and happy man.

Bryan was a loyal friend, a helpful neighbour, a loving and giving husband, father, stepfather, brother, and uncle.

He leaves behind his wife, Clara; his sons, Ryan and Devan; Clara’s children, Colin and Adelle; and his daughter-in-law, Jami.

He also leaves behind his niece, Tiffany, whom he always considered one of his own.

Bryan will be missed and loved from here to the moon!

Donations can be made in Bryan’s honour to the Kids Cancer Care - Camp Kindle.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Vander Wekken, his children and grandchildren; Ben and Maria Vander Wekken, Lisa and Jason, Stephanie and Gord Littel, Dawn (Evan) and Kayla (Hayden), Ted and Jennifer Vander Wekken, Ruth and Kevin Visser, Elisabeth and Dean, Jobena and Tyler Westera, Isaiah and Daine.

He is also survived by his sister; Sylvia Fokkens, and 2 sisters-in-law; Ann Vanderwekken and Donna Vanderwekken.

Obituaries ROWBOTHAM Kenneth Walter Nov. 28, 1930 - Nov. 6, 2014 Ken passed away peacefully on November 6, 2014 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 83 years. Ken had taken a fall a few weeks back and broke his hip, and complications from the trauma and stress to his body mounted.

Ken fought hard and was making daily improvements, and things were looking good, but perhaps the thought of losing his independence to illness was too much, and he just gave up. Twelve hours before Ken died he was not very responsive, but when asked if he liked it in the hospital, Ken looked up with a great smile and shook his head left to right, meaning absolutely not! Ken was born in the twenty-two room Red Deer Municipal Hospital on November 28, 1930, the second of four sons to Walter and Ellen Rowbotham. Ken was raised at the family homestead near Pine Lake, and attended the Grassy Lake School House, all the time working on the farm. In his adult life Ken continued to farm at Pine Lake, and lastly at Blackfalds, before retiring in 1992. The last few decades Ken resided at times in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Eckville, Innisfail, Calgary (that was a mistake!) and the past year at the Westview Manor in Bowden. Ken was predeceased by his father Walter, his mother Ellen, and his brothers Aubrey and Vernon. Ken is survived by his stepson, Jason Laurie and family of Calgary, stepdaughter, Alison Senycz and family of Calgary, stepdaughter, Tiffany Haynes of Mesa, Arizona, and brother, Austin Rowbotham and family of St. Albert. Also left to cherish Ken’s memory is his wife and best friend, Alida Rowbotham of Calgary. Ken was an all around great fellow with a terrific sense of humour, and a friendly and charitable disposition. Ken was always a great admirer of nature, and he loved everything to do outdoors, especially gardening, fishing, trapping, hunting, berry picking, and simple drives to the countryside. Ken always knew more than he let on, and often knew how things would unfold long before they would happen. Ken was overly generous person, and willfully or reluctantly, he ended up giving away everything the last few decades. Despite this, Ken remained a humble and trusted friend to all that remained close to him, and he didn’t begrudge anyone, although he could have. It is hard to find people like Ken these days; perhaps God doesn’t make them anymore, but Ken was definitely one of the good ones, and he will be truly missed. Ken’s son Jason extends his sincere appreciation to the attending physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and support staff of the ICU at the Red Deer Hospital, for the exemplary care provided to Ken the last few weeks. There are too many names to mention, but if you are reading this, you probably spoke with Jason, and you will know who you are. Much gratitude goes out to the families of Dale Herbert, Tom Herbert, and Shane Havervold for helping out in the manner they did. Ken thought the world of you guys, thanks for a lifetime of friendship! Thanks to Tom at the Innisfail Funeral Home for helping Jason make sense of things the past week. The Pine Lake country was always in Ken’s blood, and he often recounted stories of his upbringing there, life was an adventure back in the 30’s and 40’s, and a book should probably be written about the mischievous and fun filled times of that era. It is fitting then, that a reception in his memory be held at the Pine Lake HUB on Saturday November 15, 2014, between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. If you knew Ken from years ago, or in more recent times, you are welcome to attend. A great lunch that Ken would approve of, and beverages will be provided. Sixth doctor catches Ebola

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — A doctor in Sierra Leone has tested positive for Ebola, dealing yet another blow to the country’s fight against the deadly outbreak, an official announced Tuesday.

Dr. Martin Salia, a specialist surgeon at a major hospital in the capital of Freetown, is the sixth Sierra Leonean doctor to become infected in this outbreak. Salia is receiving treatment, said Dr. Brima Kargbo, Sierra Leone’s chief medical officer. He offered no other details.

Health workers are at particular risk because Ebola is transmitted through the bodily fluids of the sick — who are often vomiting or bleeding uncontrollably — and more than 500 have become infected in this outbreak. Even with the proper protection, staying safe while treating Ebola patients requires rigorous attention to detail, and the smallest mistake can lead to an infection.

Nearly 5,000 people have died of the disease in this outbreak, the majority of them in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair met with officials in Sierra Leone on Tuesday and urged the international community not to let up the fight against the disease.

“More beds, more medical personnel and laboratory testing need to be done, faster, to be on top of this situation,” said Blair, who founded the Africa Governance Initiative to help leaders make reforms and meet development goals.

In Mali, which has recorded just one case of Ebola, officials said Tuesday that nearly 30 members of a family that was visited by a toddler who brought the disease to the country have now been released from a 21-day quarantine after they showed no symptoms of the disease.

The family is now free to move about, health department spokesman Markatie Daou said. The girl, Fanta Kone, visited their home with her grandmother in the capital, Bamako, and the toddler succumbed to the virus soon after.

People with Ebola are only contagious when they are showing symptoms. The girl’s case alarmed health authorities because she was bleeding from her nose as she travelled from Guinea to Mali, passing through the capital en route to the western city of Kayes where she died.

About 50 others who had possible contact with the girl remain under observation in Kayes. They will

be released from quarantine on Nov. 16 if they don’t show symptoms, Daou said.

Mali, which shares a porous land border with Guinea, has long been seen as vulnerable to Ebola because of the large number of people moving back and forth between the two countries.

The World Health Organization has said that the girl had been living in Guinea, where other members of her family are believed to have also died from Ebola, including her father. The girl’s mother, grandmother and two siblings — aged 3 months and 5 years — appear not to have contracted the virus.

Meanwhile, authorities in Liberia have released an update on their investigation into the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Shaki Kamara last August during the quarantine of a slum in the capital.

While the government said it didn’t find conclusive evidence that military personnel had fired the fatal shot, they sanctioned a platoon commander saying he “should have been able to handle simple crowd control and dispersal.”

He and four other servicemen could face detention or correctional custody and a reduction in rank following the government’s findings.

The commissioner of the township, known as West Point, is also being reassigned, the Liberian government said.

BEIRUT — Traction is growing for one of the few ideas left for peace in Syria’s civil war: Work out a series of local cease-fires to try to quiet the bloodiest fronts around the country, without tackling the core issues of the conflict between President Bashar Assad’s government and the rebels.

The U.N. envoy to Syria called Tuesday for such an incremental truce in the northern city of Aleppo as a building block for more — an idea that Assad has said is “worth studying.”

The Islamic State group’s onslaught has given greater urgency to finding some sort of solution for the nearly 4-year-old conflict. But reaching even small-scale truces in the fragmented country of multiple, divided fighting forces could be a near impossible task.

Staffan de Mistura is the third U.N. envoy to try to mediate a solution to the Syrian war. Previous peace initiatives and cease-fire attempts brokered by veteran U.N. diplomats Kofi Annan and Lakhdar Brahimi all ended in failure, including the brief deployment of a U.N. monitoring mission and two rounds of peace talks in Geneva earlier this year meant to discuss a political transition.

Since then, the situation has become infinitely more complicated with the growing influence of extremist groups like Islamic State and the al-Qaidalinked Nusra Front, and U.S. airstrikes targeting militants in the country.

On Tuesday, de Mistura suggested “freezing” the conflict, starting with Aleppo, the last major metropolis where mainstream rebels fighting to topple Assad hold large areas.

“That means stop fighting, stop fighting. No one moves from where they are,” the U.N. envoy told a

news conference in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

This would not be a substitute for a political solution but could become a “building block” for an eventual political process, de Mistura said.

He did not elaborate on how the freeze could come about. Much of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once-vibrant commercial centre, is in ruins. Rebelheld areas in the eastern part of the city are pulverized and abandoned after thousands were killed in government bombings. Rebels there are under attack from advancing government forces and increasingly feel squeezed by approaching Islamic State militants trying to take nearby communities. Residents in the government-held west live in fear of shelling and explosions.

Opposition activists said local truces would only help Assad unless they were part of a comprehensive political solution.

“Cease-fires without a clear vision for a full and comprehensive political solution will give the regime time to regroup and reorganize itself to continue its crimes against the Syrian people at a later stage,” said Hadi Bahra, head of the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition.

Noah Bonsey, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, said Assad’s stated willingness to study the local cease-fire idea is nothing new. The Syrian government has accepted almost every peace initiative offered in the course of the war, only to disentangle from them later on.

“Unless the regime fears consequences for continuing with the status quo, it’s hard to see why it would agree to a deal in Aleppo that preserves the mainstream armed opposition, which remains its first priority” to defeat, Bonsey said.

WASHINGTON — John Doar, a top Justice Department civil rights lawyer in the 1960s who was at the centre of key battles to protect the rights of black voters and integrate universities in the South, died Tuesday at age 92.

The cause was congestive heart failure, said his son, Burke Doar.

Doar, a Republican, was a Justice Department civil rights lawyer from 1960 to 1967, serving under the administrations of President John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and rising to the position of assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Division.

In 1962, he escorted James Meredith, the first black student to enrol in the University of Mississippi, onto the campus while then-Gov. Ross Barnett and angry crowds sought to keep the school segregated. Doar later was the lead prosecutor in the federal trial arising from the deaths of three civil rights workers, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner. Those killings inspired the 1988 film “Mississippi Burning.”

Later in his career, he served as special counsel to the House of Representatives as it investigated the Watergate scandal, where he recommended the impeachment of President Richard Nixon. Among the lawyers on the impeachment committee staff was Hillary Rodham, now Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former secretary of state.

Working for the federal government at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Doar challenged discriminatory policies in Southern states that curtailed minority access to the voting booth and state universities.

Iraqi troops recapture heart of refinery town

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BAGHDAD — Iraqi soldiers battling the Islamic State group recaptured the heart of the town of Beiji, home to the country’s largest oil refinery, state television and a military official said Tuesday.

Retaking Beiji, 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of Baghdad, could allow Iraqi forces a base to attack neighbouring Tikrit, taken by the extremists after their lightning advance this summer. It also represents a morale boost for Iraq’s beleaguered security forces, which saw many of its troops flee the militant offensive.

State television quoted the top army commander in Beiji, Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, as saying troops recaptured the city’s local government and police headquarters at the centre of the town. It aired what appeared to be archival footage of the town showing Iraqi army troops firing their weapons from behind sand barriers.

Al-Saadi later spoke to state television by telephone but the line appeared to be cut off after he said his forces were meeting stiff resistance.

A senior military official reached by telephone in Beiji confirmed the recapture of the city centre, but added that intense clashes continued elsewhere in the town. He told The Associated Press that 75 per cent of Beiji was now in the hands of government troops. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

Government officials in Baghdad offered no immediate comment on the reports. Al-Saadi said Saturday that his forces had recaptured most of the city and that it would soon be entirely rid of Islamic State group fighters.

There was no word on the fate of the refinery, which lies on the outskirts of the town and has been besieged by Islamic State fighters since June. The small army unit inside the refinery, resupplied and reinforced by air for months, successfully resisted wave after wave of extremist assaults.

Iraq’s army and security forces partially have regrouped after melting away in the face of the summer’s Islamic State offensive. In recent weeks, they recaptured a string of small towns and villages, but taking Beiji would be strategically significant in what is shaping up to be a drawn-out campaign against the extremists.

Recapturing Beiji also would be a major boost for Iraq’s Shiite-led government and could pave the way for a fresh offensive to drive Islamic State militants from the nearby city of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein’s hometown and the capital of Salahuddin province.

The campaign to retake Beiji suffered a serious setback Friday when a suicide truck bomber struck the convoy of a top Iraqi police officer, killing eight people, including the ranking official, Lt. Gen. Faisal Malik al-Zamel.

Al-Zamel and al-Saadi jointly led the Beiji campaign, carried out by a contingent of troops and security forces drawn from a nearby military base and airlifted from government-controlled areas elsewhere.

Airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition have aided Iraqi forces, militias and Kurdish peshmerga fighters battling Islamic State militants. Hundreds of U.S. advisers and trainers also have been working with the Iraqis.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean ferry captain was sentenced Tuesday to 36 years in prison for negligence and abandoning passengers when his ship sank earlier this year, but the court acquitted him of homicide, concluding there was no proof he knew his actions would cause the more than 300 deaths that shocked and outraged the country.

The highly anticipated verdict came on the same day searches were called off for the final nine victims and amid continuing grief and finger-pointing over one of the worst disasters in South Korean history. Victims’ relatives immediately criticized the sentences for Capt. Lee Joon-seok and other crew members as too lenient, with some weeping and shouting during the court proceedings.

“Do you know how many children are dead?” one relative said, according to Kook Joung-don, a lawyer for the relatives.

ern South Korea also concluded that Lee had issued an evacuation order and had left the ship after rescue boats arrived on the scene, the court said in a statement.

Most of the ferry passengers were teenage students taking a school trip, and many student survivors have said they were repeatedly ordered over a loudspeaker to stay on the sinking ship and that they didn’t remember any evacuation order being given before they helped each other flee the vessel.

Lee, 69, has said he issued an evacuation order. But he told reporters days after his arrest that he withheld the evacuation order because rescuers had yet to arrive and he feared for the passengers’ safety in the cold, swift waters.

The widely vilified captain could have received a death sentence had he been convicted on the homicide charge.

Dozens killed in head-on collision in Pakistan

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MULTAN, Pakistan — A head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck on a highway in southern Pakistan killed 58 people on Tuesday, police said. The collision ignited a fuel fire and a rescuer later described how he carried out a survivor, a four-yearold girl, from the burning bus.

The bus, with about 70 people, had left Swat Valley and was en route to the southern port city of Karachi when it collided head-on with the truck near Khairpur district in Sindh province,

said police official Ghulam Jhokhio.

He said the bus quickly caught fire after its fuel tank exploded.

The fatalities included 21 women and 19 children, all below the age of 14, said local hospital official Jafar Soomro and warned the death toll was likely to rise. Fifteen people were injured and in hospital, several of them in critical condition, he said.

Initially, Jhokhio said the accident might have happened because of heavy fog.

But later, deputy chief of highway police, A.D. Khawaja, said the bus was speeding on a part of the highway un-

BRIEF Maine man says he was ‘foolish’ when he inadvertently broke into flower shop PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man who authorities originally said fell to the sidewalk while rappelling down a fire escape after breaking into a Portland flower shop was actually part of a stunt that had gone awry.

Ronald Podlaski told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1qCaHDU ) on Monday he was trying to surprise a friend Saturday by sneaking up the fire escape and climbing in her apartment window. The 29-year-old Podlaski, an artist who uses the name RookSye, says he got the wrong building and ended up in the florist.

He says he fell from a third-floor window after realizing his mistake and tripping the alarm. He suffered minor injuries.

He says he’d been drinking beer and what he did was “foolish.”

Authorities have decided not to charge him. But he plans to apologize to the florist.

The 15 crew members tasked with navigating the ferry Sewol have faced scathing public criticism because they escaped the sinking ship while many passengers were still trapped. A total of 476 people were aboard the ship and only 172 were rescued in the April disaster.
