One of those people in attendance was 17-yearold Quincy Ngo, who along with his friend Jeff Swetlikoe, read a memorial to the fallen called I Want to See the Soldiers.

“I just felt that there was something I should do to give back to the soldiers for the freedoms I have today,” said Ngo, afterwards about his reasons for participating in the service.

“When I think about it, the soldiers have done a lot for us. I don’t know where we’d be if it wasn’t for them fighting for us in the first place. I think it’s a good opportunity to take this day every year to say thank you for their hard work.”

Waiting for the start of the parade in the chilly breeze on Power Street earlier in the day was Amanda Fitzpatrick and her six-year-old daughter Natalie.

“I think it’s very important that kids learn at a very early age why it is they have what they have and who it was that is responsible for them to live in freedom,” she said.

In Okanagan Falls, there was also a good turnout for Remembrance Day with more than 200 people attending the services at the elementary school and the march to the cenotaph.

In his closing remarks in Penticton, master of ceremonies Comrade Ron Bannister talked of the men who died in the recent, hostile military deaths of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in Quebec and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa at the National War Memorial.

“So we must remember that the price of freedom is not cheap,” he said. “We must forever remember their sacrifices, lest we forget, lest we forget.”

Community rallies together for the kids Mark Brett

As they have for the previous 34 years South Okanagan Similkameen residents have rallied in support of kids who need help at a critical time in their lives.

For the annual Share a Smile Telethon Nov. 9, the OSNS Child and Youth Development Centre expects the total amount raised will be in excess of $42,000.

During the five-hour program officials also unveiled a new logo and new name (formerly OSNS Child Development Centre) for the facility which helps over 360 young people and their families throughout the region annually.

During the afternoon, along with the entertainment and video clips of what services the centre provides Shaw and online viewers got to meet some of those who utilize the centre’s skilled therapists.

People like Melanie Madill and her five-year-old son Liam (Western News, Nov. 7) whose lives have been turned around in the last two years.

“It feels great but more than anything it feels humbling,” said centre executive director Manisha Willms, after the lights dimmed and the cameras were turned off. “The number of volunteers, the number of people who sat on our panels and as I was last year (her first telethon) I am in awe of peoples’ volunteerism and just that spirit of pitching in.

“I would say we have close to 150 volunteers, middle school kids, high school kids, seniors, it’s such a community of generations that come together to help OSNS and I can’t say how much we appreciate that and everyone who has helped us with their donations.”

Willms also apologized to those people who were unable to get through on the telephone due to a glitch in the system. As well as the monetary contributions, the telethon again had an online auction which ran from Nov. 7-9. One of the people who was at the telethon to make a donation in person was Tom Cook of the Okanagan Motorcycle Riders Association.

“We appreciate what everyone does to support us and we do like to support a good cause. It’s all about the future and the children are our future,” said Cook.

The association members put in countless hours every year to help with another important fundraiser for the centre, the Harley Davidson raffle. As well, the organization participates each year in fundrais-

Fake prescription and string of offences leads to house arrest Joe Fries

An attempt to fraudulently obtain prescription medication in someone else’s name was among the string of 15 criminal offences for which a Penticton woman has been placed on house arrest for nearly a year.

In provincial court last week in Penticton, Mae Lynnette Postel, 28, was handed a 311-day conditional sentence followed by 18 months’ probation, in addition to time served of 289 days.

Her conditional sentence will be

served at home, provided she follows a number of conditions, including abiding by a curfew and not possessing identification or cheques in anyone’s name but her own.

Postel earlier pleaded guilty to offences including identity theft and fraud in connection with a sixmonth crime spree that ended with her incarceration in January 2014 for breaching a court order.

Crown counsellor Catherine Crockett told the court Postel’s run began July 11, 2013, when a nurse at Penticton Regional Hospital called police to report Postel was trying

to get a prescription for a narcotic painkiller using someone else’s identification. Police later learned the prescription was written out on a pad stolen from a Keremeos doctor’s office.

Then on Sept. 26, 2013, Postel was arrested after walking out of Save-On-Foods in Penticton with a cart full of merchandise for which she never paid. The items, with a total value of $809, included makeup and candy.

“This isn’t necessarily sustenance type of stealing,” said Crockett.

A month later, Postel was arrested

for shoplifting at a Save-On-Foods in Kelowna and told police she was someone else: a woman whose personal identification and banking information she had earlier obtained and used for other criminal activity in Penticton. Crockett said the victim of that identity theft is a single mother who has had a “very, very difficult” time putting her life back together and coming up with money to replace her stolen documents Defence counsel James Pennington said Postel “suffers from a number of challenges,” including an addiction to opiates that began when

she was prescribed pain medication for a back injury.

“When addicts are in the grips of addiction, they will go to great lengths to do what they need to do to feed that habit,” he said.

Postel told the court she has completed 22 programs, including first aid and building health relationships, while behind bars, and has been on methadone for a year.

“I’ve done a lot of work since I’ve been in here,” she said via videoconference from a Lower Mainland jail. “I’d just like to get another chance to prove myself.”

the aid of a walker, a security guard watched as she attempted to cross Main Street, where she fell down and was helped up by an RCMP officer who was driving by.

An hour later, the woman returned to the library, where she allegedly assaulted a staff member and was then escorted out.

The officer who dealt with the woman earlier found her on Fairview Road and offered her a ride home, but she became belligerent and was arrested for public

intoxication.

As he helped her into the police car, the woman struck the Mountie, who then took hold of her arm to restrain her.

She was released from jail the next day and diagnosed a week later with a broken wrist, which she claimed she suffered during her arrest.

“Crown counsel has concluded that on the available evidence, it is impossible to determine when and how the complainant’s wrist was broken,” concluded the clear statement, which

A new, dedicated performing arts centre may be a long ways off in Penticton’s future, but that isn’t stopping a local organization from trying to show potential mayors how it is done.

The South Okanagan Performing Arts Centre society is holding their annual general meeting Wednesday, and they invited Sigrid-Ann Thors, president of the Vernon and District Perform Arts Centre as guest speaker.

She’s coming, said Jake Kimberley, SOPAC president, to talk about how Vernon achieved building their centre. Kimberley said he has invited all three mayoral candidates to come listen to her speech.

“I think they can get some of the answers they need to look at whether we can achieve this in Penticton, the same as Vernon has,” said Kimberley. “I just want them to realize that the land is there and the opportunity is there, not today, but maybe in the future that we can develop this project and see it in-

fluence the economy of the downtown, that is really where it is at.”

The new mayor and council will be in office for a four-year term, and Kimberley said in that length of time, it might be possible to get the SOPAC project off the ground.

For now, Kimberley is still hoping the current council will reconsider its decision not to put a restrictive covenant on the empty lot that is the proposed site for SOPAC on the corner of Ellis and Nanaimo. He’s already talked to a couple of councillors who voted against the motion earlier this year and are willing to reconsider.

“Whether they will or not, I don’t know,” said Kimberley. “We are not going to lose sight of that.

We feel the land is worth now about $2.4 million.

It’s a valuable piece of public property that we feel should be taken to the public in the event that something other than a performing arts centre were to be constructed there.”

The AGM takes place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in the Shatford Centre, 760 Main St. The public is welcome to attend the meeting.

“Even if the complainant felt pain when the officer grabbed onto her arm, this action cannot be shown to be more than a measured response to her striking him.”

The statement added that the officer’s version of events was backed up by other witnesses, plus photographic and video evidence.

Acts of kindness are contagious Dale Boyd and Steve Kidd Western News Staff

If somebody paid for your meal or brought you Tim Hortons recently, it’s likely in celebration of Random Act of Kindness Day — and it’s even more likely it was Judy Kurulak.

She and her daughter Oceana were out in full force on Nov. 7 performing over 50 random acts of kindness throughout the day.

Random Acts of Kindness Day, put on by the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan, had community members out performing day-brightening acts followed by a small card asking the recipient to pay it forward.

Aaron McRann, executive director of the CFSO said it turned out to not be so easy to keep track of the number of random acts of kindness on Friday as he had planned.

“Everywhere I went on Friday, everyone I talked to was doing something,” said McRann. “The whole town seemed to be into it.

It was a ton of fun.”

Inspired by the kindness of her surrounding community, Kurulak has been paying it forward long before Nov.7.

“We’ve had lots of really kind people help me and my daughter out over the last nine years or so.

So I just try to pay it forward no matter what,” Kurulak said.

She started a chain reaction in a Tim Hortons in Summerland paying for a drive-thru order and the order of the person behind her, causing fellow customers to follow her lead. Kurulak then proceeded to treat local community members to some donuts including local police, her mechanic and her daughter’s teachers and classmates.

“Seeing the kids at my daughter’s school and their reaction was really awesome. A couple of them said they were going to go home and run the bath for their mom and stuff,” she said.

That was just one chain of acts of kindness formed. According to McRann, one woman who found a looney taped to her shopping cart at Safeway, was so impressed with the idea that she purchased extra groceries to donate to the food bank.

“That’s the kind of stuff that was happening all day long,” he said.

Kurulak’s daughter also wrote poems for her friends and was out delivering doughnuts and kind acts around the city. Oceana took to random acts of kindness quite well according to Kurulak.

“She was like ‘mom I wish you would have saved some because I want to be a part of it’,” Kurulak said.

The kindness didn’t stop there, the list of good deeds Kurulak performed in one day is long and impressive and was even capped off with her first ever blood donation. While a day of good deeds is nice, Kurulak can’t help but wonder why the kindness can’t keep going.

“I just wish that people did it more often because it does have such a positive effect,” Kurulak said.

Kurulak said it can be a good way to break the cycle of negativity people can fall into during the day-to-day grind.

“There is so much negative energy around and people get

overwhelmed with stress or life responsibilities. So just to see somebody being kind to someone else is such a wonderful feeling,” she said.

Kurulak wasn’t the only one out paying it forward. Acts of kindness took place all around Penticton including the Penticton Access Centre giving away free pizza, Wildstone Construction and Engineering Ltd. treated 25 veterans to a movie at Landmark Cinemas and The Bench Market handed out free hot chocolate.

He may not have been able to keep track of the numbers, but McRann said there is no doubt that the event will be back.

“It was a lot of fun and everyone I talked to was insistent that we need to do this every year,” he said. “Any way you look at it, it was a huge success, we will definitely do it again.”

Ultimate sacrifices and contributions This Remembrance Day felt a little different than years past.

To be sure, the ceremony was much the same, honouring those Canadians that took up arms in defence of country and principal, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

Still, there was a special poignancy this year as the thoughts of many attending ceremonies across Canada, turned to two young soldiers, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, and Patrice Vincent, who lost their lives in the performance of their duties, killed not in battle, but as symbols.

It’s 95 years since the first Remembrance Day was held, marking the end of “the war to end all wars.” But war didn’t end with the First World War, it continued on, as it has through all the ages of man. How tragic that almost a century after we started to solemnly mark it, we are still adding names to the long list of the fallen.

It’s a thin line between glorifying war and remembering and honouring those who fought in war.

That’s why, to me, the poppy is such an important symbol. It focuses our attention on the sacrifices made by the soldiers, the blood spilled of foreign soil.

Remembrance Days are often fittingly grim. We gather in the dark and cold of oncoming winter, to pause, reflect and honour.

Unlike other holidays throughout the year, this isnʼt a celebration; itʼs a reminder that sometimes sacrifices have to be made to defend the freedoms Canadians hold dear, or to PENTICTON WESTERN correct injustices.

And, especially we gather to remember the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives fighting for our freedom.

Ask yourself what the world would be like without their sacrifice.

Global warming stalled politically too On most issues this column discusses, the feedback I receive is generally negative.

One exception has been human-caused climate change, where my mail runs three to one in favour of a skeptical approach. Most express relief at having someone question the exaggerated or false claims advanced by environmentalists who strive to paint Alberta and B.C. as home to uniquely evil climate crimes.

As mentioned last week, this is an urgent issue in B.C. as the government pushes to develop liquefied natural gas exports.

The B.C. Liberal approach to limit only the “intensity” of greenhouse gas emissions from LNG production, and make no commitment on the majority of emissions from upstream gas production, looks like the effective end of Gordon Campbell’s crusade to lead North America in “climate action.”

The government has

also abandoned Campbell’s collapsed effort to set up a cap-and-trade system with various U.S. states to regulate emissions. Which brings me to a key reason for public skepticism.

Going back to Jean Chrétien’s lip service to the Kyoto Accord, the world-wide effort to rein in fossil fuel emissions has been a smog of hypocrisy, hollow promises and failed experiments.

The next grand climate summit is scheduled for Paris next summer, although the vast international green bureaucracy will first have to jet to Peru for a presummit summit.

The European Union has just agreed to a Campbell-like new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 per cent by 2030. But that’s dependent on the Paris summit reaching a legally binding international deal, something the United States remains unwilling to do.

In Ontario, a grandiose scheme to replace coal-fired power with wind, solar and other renewables has produced steeply rising electricity rates and a political scandal over a cancelled plan to build gas-fired capacity.

The public continues to be bombarded with ginned-up stories of environmental destruction. You may have seen shocking TV reports in October of a “haul-out” of thousands of walruses on beaches around the Chukchi Sea in Alaska and Russia, with animals trampling

each other.

The World Wildlife Fund and U.S. biologists rushed to media to frame this as a crisis caused by a lack of sea ice.

This claim has been demolished by Susan Crockford, an evolutionary biologist who teaches at the University of Victoria. If you Google “Walrus mass haulout hype refuted” you will find Crockford’s brief video showing a long, pre-industrial history of these events. She concludes that they are a sign of overpopulation in the now-protected walrus herds.

Crockford’s website, polarbearscience.com, debunks similar claims made about supposedly disappearing polar bears that have been a mainstay over the years to drive the global warming catastrophe narrative.

In terms of actual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, there are signs of progress. The United States has made

considerable strides, thanks to abundant shale gas that has allowed it to switch from some of its 600-odd coal-fired power plants.

Which brings us back to B.C.’s push for natural gas exports. The NDP claims to support this, but has spent hours in the legislature warning of a giveaway of the resource, imagined fracking disasters and LNG tanker explosions and everything else they can dream up to throw at it.

This is the same party that campaigned against the carbon tax in 2009 and hasn’t had a coherent energy policy since.

But this isn’t some partisan game. It’s about whether B.C. maintains its gas industry. And so far natural gas is the only thing that has substantially cut carbon emissions.

Support for National Park I would like to thank Gary Mason (The Globe and Mail) for promoting the concept of a national park in the South Okanagan of B.C. He is correct in stating that this area represents one of the most important ecosystems of the world and includes nearly 60 federally listed endangered species.

I have been familiar with this issue since my election in 2006 and have met with those

on both sides of the debate.

My conclusion is that the proposed park is the best way to preserve this pristine area.

This will also create jobs and have a positive effect on our local economy.

The Union of BC Municipalities recently passed a resolution in support of the park which has the support of local Chambers of Commerce, First Nations, environmental groups and many others.

Identity crisis in Summerland

How would you imagine Summerland in 20 years? What kind of community would you identify Summerland as being?

What brought you to Summerland and what keeps you here?

These are several questions I ask myself and ponder all the time, tough questions at times. Now turn back the clock 20 years and ask the same questions? They were as relevant then as they are today. Why, because Summerland suffers from an identity crisis and has suffered from nearly 20 years of stagnant growth.

I moved to Summerland with my family in 1979 and at that time and through the 1980’s we identified Summerland as a mainly retirement community, but with a vibrant growing tourism component, strong downtown business environment and a longstanding history in agriculture.

The community was thriving and growing and was beginning to attract a growing younger demographic. The population in 1979 was just under 7,000 and growing at a healthy, but sustainable rate. I recall in high school calculating the district’s growth rate and it was projected to have a population of 20,000 around the year 2010. Wow, that certainly did not happen! Twenty years of 0.5 per cent growth hit and we are at approximately 11,700 today.

There have been legitimate concerns expressed about the continuing viability of a local helicopter school as well as the ranching community.

These have been addressed

by Parks Canada. It should be remembered that the establishment of a national park is a lengthy process. A few years ago, I was told by the former federal Environment Minister, Peter Kent that the federal government would resume

since 1996. What happened? We cannot blame this on global or regional changes to economy, as many of our Okanagan neighbours have flourished, during the same period.

Many residents have moved to Summerland to enjoy the small town feel and security etc. Many would suggest that they like to keep it this way, however stagnant growth such as this is being on the verge of the death of a community. Yes this is a retirement community and always will predominantly be that way and that is good too, but we also need to attract families, professionals, business, etc. to allow the town to flourish and be sustainable for years to come.

I recall many years of missed opportunities, and opposing opinions that have chased good development projects away.

Ideas such as Patagonia Resort, Summerland Hills, among others.

How about delaying large projects, which in turn cost us more in infrastructure costs, such as turning down the idea of a joint 911 services building to the tune of a maximum of $3 million, and then eight years later paying $4.5 million for the RCMP building alone.

This just scratches the surface of missed opportunities. The results that I have seen are friends and co-workers moving away, businesses leaving for a better business climate, service professionals such as teachers, doctors, pharmacists, not living in Summerland raising their families.

It would appear that many candidates running for council and residents alike are making the “land swap” the main issue during the election. It is not, the issue really is the lack of direction and progress regarding Summerland.

As for the land swap, I have seen and heard opponents of this speak out and say this is not where the growth should be, but towards the hills. Less than 10 years ago, those same voices spoke out against devel-

negotiations should the province of B.C. make the request.

Concerns of ranchers and others can be addressed once negotiations resume between the two levels of government.

I strongly urge our provincial government to re-engage in this important process.

We have a chance to do something right for future generations.

As for the “good” agriculture land, take a look around, it has been mainly vacant for 30 years.

So with the civic elections only days away, keep this in mind when you vote, do you want Summerland to stay exactly the same or to actually grow and flourish for generations to come? Some of our candidates do not want any change.

I was extremely surprised at the lack of attendance by the business community but pleased that this allowed me oneon-one time with each candidate. Throughout the evening I met individuals that are obviously very passionate about Penticton and concerned about all the hot topics of the current city council with a lot of opinions on what needs to be done or changed but perhaps a lack of answers as to how this would be achieved.

There were a few in the running that I believe realized they may be in over their heads but want to give it their best shot for the experience, some fantastic and intriguing individuals that are focused on environment and “local empowerment” and some that I have known for years and have worked with directly in the community who are all great and qualified contenders.

I want to thank the chamber for hosting this event which enabled me to decide, without a doubt who would get my vote and made me want to speak out in support for one of these candidates of my generation that has been brave

enough to put his hand up for the job. Max Picton has a tourism focus being a stakeholder in the industry here for 10 plus years, holds a seat on the tourism committee, organizes events and encourages visitors to the area, providing a unique experience for everyone who stays at his beautiful creation and small paradise on Skaha Lake. I know there are some out there that feel that tourism is a seasonal industry that doesn’t sustain the economy year round and shouldn’t be our focus, but let’s be honest, it is one of our largest industries and it is extremely underdeveloped on an international scale and deserves/needs attention.

However, tourism aside, I had a discussion with Max at the Ramada that confirmed my belief that he deserves a spot on city council. He has taken the time to educate himself beyond the buzz words of the local media coverage and has rolled up his sleeves and done his homework on a wide range of topics that concern the community. He is a young, smart, community-focused business man and I believe that if what we are looking for is change, than he is a man that deserves our vote.

On Nov. 15 I’m voting for Andrew Jakubeit.

Recently at an open forum Mr. Vassilaki started his speech by admitting he sometimes has diarrhoea of the mouth and there is no telling what words are going to come out. Andrew Jakubeit thinks before he speaks, wants to mend fences and improve engagement within the community.

At a recent mayoral forum Andrew Jakubeit was very inspiring, he spoke directly to the issues and didn’t dress it up with patronizing motherhood sound bites.

I like to think of Andrew as the face of our community. As a young business owner, he’s community minded, and willing to work to make things happen. Voters set a new record for advance polls Western News Staff

Penticton voters set a new record this week for turnout to the city’s advance polls.

On the first day alone of advance polls, nearly as many Penticton voters cast their ballots as both advance polls for the 2011 municipal elec-

tion. A total of 746 ballots were cast on Nov. 5 at city hall, and another 1,147 turned out Nov. 6 for the advance poll at Cherry Lane Shopping

Centre. Overall, that adds up to 1,893 votes cast over the two days, more than double the 790 votes cast in 2011.

The vocal ensemble musica intima based in Vancouver has been performing their brand of intimate, unconducted vocal performances for more than 20 years.

The 12-piece choir will be joining the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (OSO) for their performance of GLORIA at the Cleland Theatre on Nov. 14.

Musica intima will be playing many of their signature pieces, drawing from a long history, including Exaudi written by composer Jocelyn Morlock and commissioned by musica intima. The choir will be joined on Exaudi by OSO principle cellist Audrey King.

Rosemary Thompson, music director for the OSO, has worked with the choir in the past and has based much of the upcoming performance on the lengthy catalogue of commissioned pieces available.

“It’s great for us as a guest artist for her to look at our career and pick some repertoire based on that,” Dundas said.

After the night is through, audience members will be treated to a multitude of different sounds.

“You will get a variety of different textures,” Dundas said. She said the different pieces range from sombre to contemporary and upbeat.

With a unique take on traditional choir placement, musica intima will be shifting members to spots around the stage and incorporating more movement than usually associated with choir performances.

“It wont just be a choir in the back on

the choir stalls, it’ll be a variety of different places,” Dundas said. “So it will be a variety in texture and also a variety in terms of what you see on stage.”

Audience members can expect an intimate performance with more eyecontact with concert goers than usual at an orchestral performace. Thompson will be conducting the OSO as the two groups collaborate, but intima’s solo sets will take on a non-traditional composition.

“We don’t have a conductor so when you come to an intima show, it’s a direct connection between the audience and singers,” Dundas said.

The choir is self-directed and works with a collaborative leadership model, as opposed to traditional choirs who work with a director. This opens up an on-stage connection between members who take cues from each other during performances.

“We make all the decisions together as to how it (the performance) is going to be shaped. So, during a performance you’ll see we have to look around to each other and show each other what we’re doing so we can move through the music,” Dundas said. “We kind of consider our audience the 13th member. We look around to each other, but we look to the audience and consider the audience a part of that as well.”

It has been 15 years since the adventures of the musical nuns from the Nunsense series were portrayed by the South Okanagan Amateur Players (SOAP).

Nunset Boulevard begins its run at the Osoyoos Mini-Theatre on Nov. 21 and starts in Oliver the following weekend on Nov. 28 at Frank Venable’s Auditorium.

Part of a series of plays written by American writer and composer Dan Goggin, Nunset Boulevard follows five nuns as they leave their convent for California to play their unique style of song and dance at the Hollywood Bowl — or as they soon find out, the Hollywood Bowl-a-Rama.

Nunset Boulevard marks the second performance of Nunsense series by South Okanagan Players, with a performance of the original Nunsense taking place in 1998.

Diane Gludovatz, who plays the Reverend Mother, sister Mary Regina, one of five nuns journeying to California, said revisiting the dancing nuns has been an enjoyable challenge.

“It’s been a lot of work. The sisters and I have been doing extra rehearsals and trying to get the dance routines correct. It’s very hard for nuns to be dancing,” said Gludovatz, who added, the nun costumes and shoes tend to make the dance steps more difficult to perform.

Sister Regina is the firm-but-fair mother figure to the nuns, a character Gludovatz knows well.

“She tries to look hard on the outside, but she’s really just a softie on the inside,” Gludovatz said. “The older I’ve gotten, the more I can connect with the Reverend Mother.”

Gludovatz played the same role in the 1998 performance of Nunsense. As the years have past, the character has become more relatable.

“I was much younger and I think it was more of a stretch to play the older woman, but now that I’m older I do feel like the mother of the girls,” Gludovatz said.

Penelope Johnson plays Sister Mary Leo, the most artsy of all the nuns, who has a penchant for dancing.

Johnson was also involved in the 1998 performance of Nunsense, however the character she played then happens to be the exact opposite of Mary Leo. “When I auditioned, I put on my audition form ‘I do not want the part of Sister Mary Leo’,” Johnson laughed.

When she got the role, she was unsure if she could play the part. However, Johnson looked back on some of her more challenging roles in the past and decided to take the leap.

“Some of the most fun roles I’ve been in are the ones I initially didn’t want,” Johnson said.

Part of the difficulty for Johnson was hitting the upper register for some of the musical notes, but she surprised herself.

for awhile, but I’m actually really enjoying it. I usually enjoy doing the harmony,” Johnson said.

Despite the difficulty of dancing in a nun costume, the SOAP have been having a great time during the lead up to opening night.

“We’re having a ball, we’re all really enjoying it,” said director Ray Turner. “The people who are involved with SOAP have worked together so long that we’re a really well oiled machine. We get along really well and each person knows what his or her role is.”

Area F on the board of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, squared off in front of about 50 people inside the community’s school library Brydon, a university professor seeking a third term as director, told the crowd he’s running on his track record and will take direction from voters about what his priorities should be.

Johnson, a semiretired dentist, outlined a platform with three planks: fencing out feral horses, ending mock water bills and creating an oversight committee to keep tabs on the director.

On the issue of horses, Johnson said he would immediately get to work drawing up a plan to repair and install the necessary fences, gates and cattle guards to keep the animals out of Area F neighbourhoods, then let voters decide if they want to go ahead with it.

“Every community on their own should be able to talk about it, we should have a plan that says this is going to cost you this much, this is what it’s going to look like, and we have either a petition or a referendum to say: Do you approve this?” Johnson said.

Brydon countered that such a plan already exists, but it hit a snag after some residents reported seeing horses getting across cattle guards, which, if proven true, would limit effectiveness of the fencing.

“We keep quiet about it, because we’re not sure cattle guards will solve the problem,” he said. “What will solve the problem is active horse management by the band, and we’re getting there.”

Brydon also called for a new deal with the City of Penticton to permanently eliminate the perception that West

Bench residents are getting a free ride on public amenities in the larger neighbouring community.

He said the West Bench got “extremely lucky” with the deal to purchase water from the city, and a similar pact could soon be sought for other services, such as sewer, which would require both sides to “renegotiate our relationship.”

“We can’t be out here on the cusp of Penticton forever. The idea, though, is can we do it without paying city taxes?” Brydon said.

Johnson indicted he’d favour a more hard-line approach with the city.

“As West Benchers, we have to stand up to Penticton,” he said.

“So many positive achievements have occurred during the last 3 year term that have established a good foundation on which to build a new council team.”

The Penticton Vees penalty-killing unit is now ranked No.1 on the road in the B.C. Hockey League.

The Vees returned from a Vancouver Island road trip that saw them go 1-1-0-1, but their penalty kill was at its best as they didn’t give up a goal on 12 chances. On the season, the Vees have allowed five goals on 43 chances, an efficiency rate of 88.3 per cent.

In a 4-3 overtime win over the Victoria Grizzlies to open the trip, the penalty kill unit went three-for-three.

Against the Clippers in Nanaimo in a 3-2 loss, the Vees again went three-for-three. In the final game of the trip against the Cowichan Valley Capitals, a 4-2 defeat, the Vees went five-for-five on the penalty kill.

The Vees, who were short of forwards for the trip, are now 17-3-0-1 and their road record slips to 9-2-0-1.

Massive slam dunks and slick alleyoops are the plays that will be seen during the Harlem Ambassadors charity basketball game Nov. 30 at Pen High.

The Harlem Ambassadors hit the court at 2:30 p.m. against the Lions/Habitat Slam Dunk team thanks to the Penticton Lions and Habitat for Humanity, who are presenting the event.

Splash ‘N Dash fun series Western News Staff

Splash ‘N Dash is a new swim/run series offered by the City of Penticton aimed at giving people something fun to do while being active.

Kids will complete 50/100/200 metre swim distances and 400/800/2 kilometre runs, while adults do a 750-m swim and three-km run. The first series is Nov. 16 at the Penticton Community Centre starting at 9 a.m.

“We’re trying to get families to come,” said organizer Shelie Best. “Get together with a group of people that are like minded.”

Among the rewards for completing the races? A cookie. Finishers will receive a cookie courtesy of Dogtown Cafe Co. Awards will also be given to overall male and female finishers of each series in each age category after the championship race. There will also be a top prize for the overall male and female of the championship race. Progress is tracked using a physiological equalizer system and results will be posted online at www.penticton.ca/ splash after each race.

The series, sponsored by Peach City

Runners and Dogtown Coffee Co., continues on Dec. 7, Jan.18/15, Feb.22 and the championship race on March 15. The championship race is free and athletes who complete at least two of the four races will be eligible to compete. It is a stand alone race and consists of a surprise twist to the standard course. Participants must sign up ahead of time.

“It’s just to get people together in the winter for training,” said Best. “Races don’t usually start until the spring. It’s a good opportunity for people that are training to use this as a time trial.”

The series will be held at the Penticton Community Centre with the run in the community centre parking lot for kids and the adults will complete a loop around the Community Centre and South Okanagan Events Centre. Kids start at 9 a.m. in waves 10 minutes apart, while adults will start at 9:45 a.m. in similar waves.

For families that enter, there will be child minding activities to keep kids aged three and up busy while they race.

“To do that is kind of fun,” said Best.

Princess Margaret Mustang volleyball teams utilized home court advantage Thursday to win the South Central championship.

With berths into the Valley championship as the motivator, the senior girls defeated the George Elliot Coyotes in three straight sets, while the junior boys defeated the Pen High Lakers in a best-of-three showdown.

“It was a good night for Maggie,” said Mustangs senior girls coach Tim Haberstock.

Mustangs junior boys coach R i c h Corrie said it was a hard-fought win against the Lakers, who won the first set 25-22, then lost 25-21 and 1512.

“The boys started the match a little nervous and tentative, but came back in the second set, led by the aggressive defence and attacking from Todd Corrie,” he said.

The Mustangs received strong net play from Reece Haberstock,who won key points in the must-win situations. Corrie also praised Graedon Freeman for his ability to block well in the third set. Lakers coach Annika Everton said games against the Mustangs are always hard fought and evenly matched. What hurt the Lakers were key errors at critical points. While the Lakers were not able to defeat the Mustangs, they earned the second berth for the Valley Championship by defeating the Oliver Hornets 25-13, 25-11.

“The team played much better in the second set with some great blocks from Josh Gowe and big hits from Nicholas Everton,” said Everton. “Setter Kobe Loewen also deserves credit for his smart play and good decision making.”

Another Mustangs volleyball team, the senior boys, won the South Central League and the zone playoffs to advance to the valley championship. The junior girls took second in the zone and playoffs.

The Valley Championship will be held in Kamloops Nov. 14-15.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Matthew Carson, 14, helped the Penticton Heat U14 field lacrosse team win the Interior Field Lacrosse zone championship in Vernon. Carson’s coach Dan Chetner said that he used his strengths as an athlte and player to help his team suceed.

Carson, a rookie, said he just tried to do his best and was happy with how he played. Carson said “it was really exciting” to win the zone championship.

Development was key in the success of the Penticton Minor Lacrosse Association in 2014.

The PMLA had its midget B, bantam A1 and peewee C teams advance to provincials this season.

“While having teams compete at provincials is an important success, the most important measure of success is every player developing, improving and enjoying the game,” said outgoing PMLA president Dan Van Os. “Providing a proper and positive teaching and learning environment is very significant in determining an organization’s success.”

Players showed improvement in skill development and team play.

Van Os said that having two practices a week is important to develop skills, while game play reinforced what has been learned and what needed more work.

The association also received $10,8000 from the provincial government, which can be used for equipment, training and development.

On the field, the association has Connor Ramage on Team B.C. “It’s amazing, it’s great,” said Ramage. “It feels good to be able to represent my province for lacrosse.”

Ramage attended a camp in Langley during Thanksgiving weekend and said he learned a lot while also meeting sev-

Ramage will begin playing for Team B.C. next September. He was joined by Trenton Henson at the camp.

Dan Chetner, who coached Ramage in the U14 Interior Field Lacrosse League, said it was a great opportunity for both as they have had tremendous seasons.

Result: there would be a garbage can in front of almost every business and the city’s cost for waste removal would be minimized.

One of the reasons recycling is rising in popularity is that there is money in it. Penticton is the appropriate size community for establishing our own recycling facility and an aggressive city wide recycling program. We then sell the sorted materials on the open market as the major waste management corporations are currently doing. The income produced from the sales would off-set the waste management costs incurred by the city and create a few jobs.

Initiate a local grow-local buy program. We are surrounded by sufficient arable land to be able to produce food products for ourselves. Start with a couple vegetables and work our way up from there. Carrots, for example, grow enough carrots to supply the needs of the people of Penticton.

Then we the people insist on buying only Okanagan carrots. Presto, we have farmers and farm workers making income Find an organization willing to take on the role of organizing a Seniors Festival. Have the Penticton Trade and Convention Center prospect for a group willing to put on a Seniors Trade Show. As we get older there are a number of devices, aids, fitness program and supplements that help us maintain our quality of life. Such as, mobility devices, walk-in baths, exercise equipment, diet supplements, etc. Penticton has a concentrated market for these types of items.

Establish youth community centers. Where the youth would be given a great deal of autonomy, under the guidance of a mentor, to run the centers for themselves. This would enable young people to learn organizational, management and business skills while putting on events and having programs they want to do.

Rock the vote a success Dale Boyd Western News Staff

With advanced polling closed and the election just days away, one candidate is pushing citizens to get out and rock the vote.

Mayoral candidate Andrew Jakubeit put on a Rock the Vote event at the Barking Parrot on Nov. 6, not to promote his campaign, but to encourage citizens to vote — regardless of the candidate.

“We were talking about how there’s below 30 per cent voter turnout, so why don’t we do a blitz on just get out and vote. Not get out and vote for Andrew Jakubeit, just get out and vote,” Jakubeit said.

The initial concept started out as a fundraiser for Jakubeit’s campaign, but the event eventually turned into an unbiased attempt to encourage anyone and everyone to vote.

“It’s an opportunity to take off the political hat, so to speak,” Jakubeit said.

He said the event was geared towards the youth vote, but the message is the same for every citizen, get out and vote.

“That’s part of the problem with politics is voter apathy. You have the vocal minority who don’t like things and one or two people who are willing to put their voices out there. The rest just don’t care or don’t want to get engaged,” said Jakubeit. “I think we need to change that culture. There’s no magic fix for that.”

Rock the Vote was also a chance for some local talent to hit the stage during a time of year where shows and events generally slow down in Penticton.

They may not be old enough to vote, but the Summerland-based band Silent Alarm showed they were old enough to

rock. Daniel Raitt, Silent Alarm’s 17-year-old vocalist and lead guitar player, was excited to play the event at a venue he and his bandmates have been eyeing for some time.

“It was lots of fun,” Raitt said. “It’s one of the things on our tick list. We did Action Fest, Peachfest and now the Barking Parrot, which is like the best venue in Penticton.”

He can’t hit the polls on Nov. 15, but Raitt would still like to see fiscal responsibility from whomever is elected.

“I’d like to see them not waste any money,” Raitt said.

Local rock trio Cosmic Brew also hit the stage to close out the night. Vocalist and lead

guitarist of Cosmic Brew, Mason Burns, feels getting out the youth vote is crucial to changing the status quo.

“It’s important for everyone to vote. Especially the 18 and 19 year olds, they don’t care about voting. So it’s good to try and get them out,” Burns said.

“We have the power to choose. If you want to complain about how things are run then you can change it.”

Bassist Kris Marsel added that there is more to it than just going and voting and that an uninformed vote is worse than not voting.

“Know what you’re voting on. Definitely do your research. Don’t just vote because someone told you to,” Marsel said.

Richard was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan but lived most of his life in Penticton, surrendering to cancer after a short but difficult struggle. He had an indomitable spirit and a distinctive sense of humour. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Katherine; brothers, Leopold, Theodore, Boniface, Frank and Conrad; sisters, Mary, Hilda and Helen. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Marie, of 58 ½ years and his five children, Albert (Marlene), Lorinda (Kevin), Aleta (Russ), Raymond (LeAnna), Donna (Jeff) and 6 grandchildren, Matt, Justin, Brandon, Tyler, Bailey, Katisha; brothers, Werner, Chuck (Arlene), Bob (Margaret); sisters, Bernadetta, Rose, Petronilla (Jim), Louise (Burnie) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. June 5th , 1935 – November 7th, 2014 Jurgen, our cherished husband, father and Opa, passed away at Penticton Regional Hospital after a short illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Rita; daughter Monica (Manuel) Borba of Penticton; son Martin (Darcie) Schori of Oliver, and two treasured grandsons, Trevor Schori and Joaquin Borba. He also leaves behind four brothers; Siegfried (Margrit) of Switzerland; Dieter (Gretel), Peter, and Rudi, all from Germany and brother and sister-in-law Manfred (Bri) Oehmichen also from Germany, plus numerous nieces and nephews in Germany, Portugal and USA. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 and made a successful life as a masonry contractor for over 40 years in Penticton and area. TARR Harvey

Our family is sad to announce the death of Harvey Tarr on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by family at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Harvey leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Florine (nee Tackaberry), who is also in care at the Grace Hospital. He’s survived by his three sons, Grant (Mary Ann) and their children Jeff (Trisha) and Micheal (Saundra); Neil (Moya) and their children Keith (Andrea) and Carey (Chris); and Dennis (Laurie) and their children Jordan, Chelsey (Jesse) and Ainsley (Mathieu); as well as his sister, Agnes Selin, sister-in-law Catherine Tarr, sister-in-law Pat Parke, eight greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother, Leslie Tarr.

Harvey and Florine met at church camp in their early teens, and he stood lovingly by her side until his final days. Born in Assiniboia, SK, Harvey worked most of his career at MTS in Portage, Brandon and Winnipeg. After retirement he and Florine spent over a year travelling North America in their RV before settling in Salmon Arm, BC. There, he worked with Investors Group. In 2001, they relocated to Penticton, BC. Harvey and Florine moved back to Winnipeg in 2013 to be closer to family.

Throughout his moves, Harvey remained involved in the Presbyterian Church. He was a wonderful man with a heart for helping his family and community, and he’ll be greatly missed. Thank you to the staff at Grace Hospital ER and 5 North for their kindness and caring.

Cremation has taken place, memorial service to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to charity of choice.
