Sugar

Consuming too much sugar increases your risk of dying from heart disease and is likely overall more dangerous than consuming too much fat. For years, fat has been much maligned for its health dangers including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. There is mounting evidence that we have missed the mark by pointing the finger at fat and many researchers are looking to sugar as the primary culprit in the fat vs sugar duel. A recent article in JAMA Internal Medicine is supporting this trend. The US study found that a higher percentage of calories from added sugar significantly increases the risk of dying from heart disease. For an adult consuming a typical 2000 calories a day, having one can of pop (10 teaspoons of sugar) a day exceeds the amount that this study found to raise the risk of dying from heart disease. The more sugar you consume, the greater the risk of dying. Sugar is a major part of our diet and extremely

important to the trillion dollar processed food industry. Canadians consume about 25 teaspoons of added sugar every day (about 150 pounds a year). In the late 60's sugar consumption declined due to evidence that it was dangerous to your health. The processed food industry mounted an aggressive campaign bankrolling "research" that presented sugar as healthy in a bid to increase consumption and limit legislation restricting its use. By the 1980's research into the dangers of sugar had ground to a halt and the use of sugar continued to explode (along with our waistlines, diabetes and heart disease). This research suggests that you should consume no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar a day. Here is a tip: to determine how many teaspoons of sugar in a food look at the nutritional information on the label and divide the number of grams of sugar by 4. Prepare to be shocked and use this as motivation to eat less processed food and more vegetables.

Q and A with mayoral candidate Lee Pratt

Lee Pratt

Q: How long have you lived in Cranbrook and what is your background? A: I’ve lived here for 65 years. For 45 years I was in business. I was in automotive industrial sales for 25 years, then became financial advisor for Midland Walwyn. In 2012 I retired as a Vice President, Branch Manager and Investment Advisor for CIBC Wood Gundy. When I retired I managed nearly $100 million After I became branch manager, I handled other advisors with over $600 million in assets. Q: Why have you been in Cranbrook for so long? There must have been opportunities elsewhere? A: I’ve had many opportunities to move on, which usually meant relocating to a larger centre, including the U.S. But I love the four seasons. When I was younger I was involved in all the sports. From golf to soccer, to baseball to hockey. Nothing has changed. Cranbrook offered everything I needed and I could visit a larger centre if needed. It’s good to raise your family here. It’s a safe town. My grandkids are here. I bought into a business so my son could remain here and make a decent living

and raise my grandkids. I have a passion for Cranbrook, I really do. Q: Why are you running for Mayor? A: There are a number of reasons and there are some things done by the present council that don’t make sense. The economy is flat, no matter what some people say. This becomes apparent when you dig down and look at the numbers. If we are to grow and prosper we need new leadership and more financial responsibility. We need to pursue an economic strategy that will work. I would stop the frivolous and unnecessary spending and put common sense back. Examples? Paving the road to the spray irrigation site that no one uses except for employees and hunters. The west entrance sign was totally unnecessary, $75,000 for 11 new benches in five blocks, $195,000 for two new bathrooms in the library, and the list goes on. Q: What would your priorities be? A: Well, some of the spending I’ve uncovered in the 5-year budget, released this year, has a lot of unnecessary spending. If you redirect that money alone and put it into roads and infrastructure, that would almost equal the $3 million they put in now. There is also new technology and design we can put into roads to help increase the amount we can do. Doing five or six blocks a year, we’ll never catch up. I also want to increase the tax dollars available. We have to grow and have to increase our tax base. It isn’t only about attracting businesses with 200 to 300 people, it could be only 2 to 20 employees. We have to become salesmen. It’s not good enough to

say we have great views and a good lifestyle, we have to sell them on our resources. We have to cooperate with existing businesses, work with the College of the Rockies, the International Airport, the provincial government and Columbia Basin Trust. We have to partner with them. We have to engage all the businesses and the real estate people in town—they are the first point of contact. With them on side it will help to get people to move here. With an increased tax base, the economy will improve and there will be more money for infrastructure. The big thing is we have to get out and talk to people not just about lifestyle, but about our resources. Q: You speak about smaller businesses. What would you do for them? A: Small business is the backbone of the economy and we have a lot of them in Cranbrook. If they want to expand, renovate or relocate, they come up against barriers at City Hall. City Hall is not cooperative with existing businesses. For anyone new, there are a lot of charges, permits, landscaping charges, you name it. Q: Is there anything else you want potential voters to know about you? A: I do have a vision for Cranbrook. I love Cranbrook and have lived here all my life. First and foremost, we have to get our financial house in order and I have a plan that won’t take 3 years, but six months. I’m a common sense guy, I cut to the point and don’t put political spin on things. I’m a decision maker and want to get on with it and get the job done.

Letter: Volunteer services not accepted I am writing this letter to let the Cranbrook Press and Community know what happened on October 7. Before I continue further, let me give you a brief idea of this yearly event called Community Christmas Dinner. This started in the year by 1978 by the volunteers which included me to create this event for the Cranbrook Community to be able to give these people a Christmas Dinner which is open to all Cranbrook residents. We, the volunteers, gathered and decided

to start fund-raising programs to make this event possible. This has been going since then and in 1987 the Mental Health Association presented me an award because of my active participation to make this event a success. I was so honoured to receive this gesture and promised the community who has been attending this yearly Christmas Dinner that I will be there every year for as long as the Lord will grant me physical, emotional and spiritual strength to continue volunteering. Every year as early as

October, I always go to the Mental Health Association to inquire as to what date in December this year will will take place. I was told that my daughter’s and my services are no longer needed. This action has made me feel like dirt and feel that the coordinator made me break my promise that I made to the community that I would be there every year to volunteer. I felt that I was not deserving of the award that Mental Health gave me for this purpose. I decided to give back this award to Mental Health. No matter what happens I will continue volunteering for this event. I don’t believe

that anybody can put a number as to how many volunteers are needed for a certain event. A person volunteers his/ her time and there’s not any time that a volunteer has nothing to do because for this kind of event, little things can make big things. To end this letter, I just want to ask the press and community if what happened to me was right and fair to any volunteer whose services are refused or turned down. Thank you for letting me express my views. ~Edward Potekal

In Memoriam

Shirley Irene (Crozier) Carpendale November 10, 1935 - November 12, 2012

We thought of you today, But that is nothing new. We thought of you yesterday, And will tomorrow too. We think of you in silence, And make no outward show. For what it meant to lose you, Only those who love you know. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day. It’s the heartache of losing you, That will never go away. Love Always Your Family
