Remembrance Day
Lest we forget Meet the man behind the famous poem In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
SUBMITTED The name of John McCrae (1872-1918) may seem out of place in the distinguished company of World War I poets, but he is remembered for what is probably the single best-known and popular poem from the war,
‘In Flanders Fields’. He was a Canadian physician and fought on the Western Front in 1914, but was then transferred to the medical corps and assigned to a hospital in France. He died of pneumonia while on active duty in 1918. His volume of poetry, ‘In Flanders
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow John McCrae, Physician, poet, soldier Fields’ and Other Poems, was published in 1919. Before he died, John McCrae had the satisfaction of knowing that his poem had been a
success. Soon after its publication, it became the most popular poem on the First World War. It was translated into many languages and used on billboards ad-
vertising the sale of the first Victory Loan Bonds in Canada in 1917. Designed to raise $150,000,000, the campaign raised $400,000,000. In part because of the poem’s popularity, the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance for the war dead of Britain, France, the United States, Canada and other Commonwealth countries. Today, people continue to pay tribute to the poet of “In Flanders Fields” by visiting McCrae House, the limestone cottage in Guelph, Ontario, where he was born. The house has been preserved as a museum. Beside it are a memorial cenotaph and a garden of remembrance. The symbolic poppy and John McCrae’s poems are still linked and the voices of those who have died in war continue to be heard each Remembrance Day.
Remembering those who served
A message from the B.C. Legion president “When people wear the Poppy in November, it is a universal symbol of respect. What people often don’t realize is that while we are indeed recognizing veterans from long ago battles who fought and gave their lives, there are others who need to see us wear it - modern-day veterans. They are here and so are their families, and they are deserving of our respect. We wear the poppy for them with even more determination, because they continue to make sacrifices day in and day out.” ~ Angus Stanfield, president of the Legion in B.C. and Yukon
Veteran’s meeting An evening to connect with fellow Veterans is being held at the reading room upstairs in the Kimberley Public Library. This is a social, coming together for coffee, and an opportunity for veterans to meet old friends and make new ones. All Veterans are welcome. As the mother of a military Veteran, it is my intention to help Veteran’s get recognized and know they are appreciated. I understand the importance of fellowship and the power in camaraderie for our men and women
that have served. The name of the group, Military Ames, is in homage to Bruce Ames, a veteran who served with the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 78. The Military Ames meeting takes place on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 6:30-9 p.m. upstairs in the Kimberley Public Library reading room. The reading room can be accessed through the back door of the library (115 Spokane St.) off Kimberley Ave. at the north end of the Platzl.
These pages contain photographs submitted by our readers of their friends and loved ones who have served this country in conflicts since 1901. Veterans of the Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict and United Nations peacekeeping missions are all represented here. Some of the photographs are official portraits, others are family snapshots—including more than one wedding photo. All of them carry profound meaning for families, friends and neighbours of these veterans. In light of that, the Kootenay News Advertiser would like to thank our readers for entrusting this newspaper with your precious photographs and memorabilia. This is of particular interest to the readers of a regional journal like ours, which has been part of the East Kootenay for many years. Any errors or omissions are completely unintentional.

Dear Papa, I wanted to send you a letter to express to you how grateful I am to have you in my life. I never new until now how much of a hero you are and always will be. I always had questions but the video you shared with us could not have said it more. You don't have to say more than two words for us to understand what you went through and I just wanted to thank you for all of our freedom. People don't often talk about it any more and my generation has no clue what you went through for your family and our country. I want to promise you my kids will know and remember. None of us can comprehend the heartbreak and pride that will never leave you. I am proud to be your granddaughter and thank you for our freedom I will not let anyone forget. Kelly

Private Bill Nowell joined up in Edmonton with the 49th Loyal Edmonton Infantry Battalion in 1940 and was shipped over to England, North Africa, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany in Captain Asher Hamer's platoon in A-Company. Bill saw his worst fighting around Christmas 1943 at Campobasse and Ortona, along the East coast of Italy. Ortona was close-quarter house to house fighting where you had to use your boots and bayonets on the Germans. The Germans paratroopers had Ortona mined and booby-trapped with snipers hidden everywhere, dropping grenades down on the Canadians advancing in the open streets. The German mines took out three Sherman tanks in the first hour—the infantry was on it’s own. The Loyal Eddies weren’t dumb enough to go down the one remaining street the Germans had left invitingly open. Instead they ended up blasting their way through the walls on one end of a row of houses, fighting to the top floor, and blasting through each separating wall, working their way along the rows of houses, one at a time, chucking in grenades as they went. A lot of Eddies got killed but they captured the town. (Today in Ortona there's a graveyard memorial there marked with a Sherman Tank. There's a lot of Loyal Eddies in it). Bill made it through the war with a few scars, some shrapnel in the neck, and food poisoning from the awful army food. He brought his bride Nora back from England in 1946 and lived in Cranbrook until his heart attack in 1993. The photo shows Bill and his buddy Glen Hyland taken in Rome in 1944.
