NEW AIYANSH - A group of concerned Nisga’a citizens has launched a petition and has rallies planned in the Nass Valley and in Vancouver for Nov. 11, following news that the Nisga’a Lisims Government has signed off on provincial legislation to remove land from the valley’s Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park to allow for a better route for a planned natural gas pipeline.

The legislation, introduced last week, also provides the Nisga’a with taxation powers for industrial activity on Nisga’a lands, and comes at the same time the First Nation government announced it has signed off on a deal with TransCanada Pipelines, the natural gas pipeline builder behind the pipeline planned to go through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park.

“We support the people of the Nisga’a Nation who stand in opposition of the proposed pipeline agreement between the Nisga’a Lisims Government and Trans Canada Pipelines,” reads the online petition, created by Maxine Wright-McMillan Nov. 1 and which, as of Nov. 5, had 169 signatures.

The proposed agreement would see 63 hectares in a 12 km linear stretch running beside Hwy113 removed from the 17,781 hectare protected park. And 85 kilometres of the planned 900 kilometre pipeline from northeastern B.C. would run through Nisga’a Lands.

The petition builds on criticism directed at the Nisga’a Lisims Government on social media following the announcement of the removal of the 63 hectares – “a sacred burial site of our ancestors in the Lava Bed Memorial Park”, it reads. “We will not stand idle as this sacred land becomes desecrated by one of our own. Our government has shown where they stand on such delicate matters, now let us join together as one and share where we stand.” Two rallies will be held concurrently the afternoon of Nov. 11, one at the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver and the other in the Nass Valley at the ‘Y’ on Hwy113.

At nearly 17,800 hectares in size, the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park, jointly managed by the provincial government and the Nisga’a Nation, as a Class A Provincial Park, takes up a good portion of the Nass Valley area. A small portion of land within the park was removed several years ago to allow the construction of BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line and now TransCanada Pipelines through its Prince Rupert Gas Transmission natural gas pipeline project wants to remove nearly 65 hectares so that the pipeline can run adjacent to Hwy113 for approximately 12 kilometres. Both the provincial government and the Nisga’a Lisims Government are in support of the proposal.

Planned Rupert LNG plant now delayed

PRINCE RUPERT The BG Group said it is “pausing on Prince Rupert” when it comes to the company’s liquefied natural gas export terminal on Ridley Island, but BG Canada president Madeline Whitaker said the company is not abandoning its plans.

“We have always said the earliest final investment decision would be 2016, realistically it will probably be later than that with commercial operations beginning early in the next decade ... we are not going to be rushed in scheduling this project, we are going to take the time to do it right that is right for the BG Group and right for the people of B.C.,” she said.

Although the timeframe may have changed, Whitaker said preparation work is still ongoing on the North Coast. “In terms of our momentum here in B.C. we have a lot of work to do in 2015. The focus of our work next year will be bringing forward some additional field studies to support our environmental assessment and permitting, we

will be continuing with our community engagement, with our consultation and we will be bringing forward two new programs with First Nations for employment, training and environmental stewardship.

The team is still here and we have a lot of work to do next year.”

The company made its decision public during an Oct. 28 conference call, a decision Whitaker said is being driven in part by the development of an LNG export industry south of the border.

“This is all about how much goes ahead in the U.S. There is about 270 million tonnes of project capacity on the slate in the U.S. at the moment and the scale of the U.S. export could have an impact on when the best time is for Canadian volume to come onto the market,” she said.

Nisga’a Lisims Government executes benefits agreement

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Ltd. has cleared one hurdle in the construction of its proposed pipeline connecting Northeastern B.C. to Lelu Island as the Nisga’a Lisims Government has executed a benefits agreement with the company.

The Nisga’a Nation said the agreement, which was passed on Oct. 29, will allow for approximately 85 kilometres of the proposed pipeline to run through Nisga’a lands and allow approximately 12 kilometres to run through the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park primarily adjacent to the highway.

The final right-of-way for the pipeline will be approximately 32 metres wide, while additional lands may be required for possible pipeline expansion, temporary log decking, equipment storage and camps. However, the nation emphasizes that “the rights granted by

the Nisga’a Nation are not sales of Nisga’a Lands”.

The Nisga’a say the agreement includes “substantial financial and other benefits that will accrue to the Nisga’a Nation”, including direct financial benefits, further capacity funding, milestone payments, annual right-of-way payments and additional payments “made on the basis of shared future success” for both the company and the Nisga’a.

As well as payments, the Nisga’a will receive property tax payments as a result of a property tax agreement signed with the province this month and includes commitments for the company to provide, “exclusive contracting opportunities for right-of-way clearing, camp services, security and medical services on Nisga’a lands”. The Nisga’a will retain ownership of merchantable timber harvested on their land and an “enhanced forest management fund and an environmental studies and monitoring fund” have been established.

The two groups will also work together to determine whether the Nisga’a Nation can establish future natural gas distribution to serve homes in the Nass Valley and gives the Nisga’a Nation the option to secure capacity on the line for an LNG developer who locates on Nisga’a Land.

“The agreement ... is a significant demonstration of the strength of the Nisga’a Treaty and its ability to generate substantial benefit to Nisga’a citizens over the life of this project,” said the Nisga’a Lisims government in a statement.

Terminal shift possible

VICTORIA - The completion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road through Delta and expensive refits required at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in North Vancouver could result in a shift of mainland-to-Nanaimo ferry traffic to the Tsawwassen terminal in the coming years.

BC Ferries has released a new major route strategy that proposes ending the Horseshoe Bay-Nanaimo run and putting the traffic on the Tsawwassen-Duke Point route, which has had sailings cut due to low usage.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said BC Ferries should also consider whether it still needs two ferry terminals at Nanaimo, a relic of the NDP government’s decision in the 1990s to build Duke Point. BC Ferries calculates that its Nanaimo runs have higher costs and lower ridership than the main Tsawwassen-

NEW HAZELTON New Hazelton RCMP responded to 70 calls the week of Oct. 23-29.

October 23 - 7:09 pm, police were called to the movie theatre in Hazelton for two patrons that were disturbing other customers. Two males were found to be intoxicated, acting irrationally and were arrested. They were subdued following a brief struggle and were detained until sober.

October 24 - At 11 pm, police were called to Kitwanga to investigate a reckless driver.

Three children reported almost being hit and witnessed a dog getting run over on Kitwanga Rd West at 9:30 pm. The vehicle was described as a purple or dark red pickup with a bush bumper and orange lights on the roof.

October 26 - 8:39 pm, a report was received of two males breaking a window at the New Town Pub in New Hazelton. The males were last seen walking east on 10 Ave. October 27 - At 8:30 am, two males were observed lurking around a residence on Wolf St in Kitwanga. The complainant was concerned due to recent thefts.

“We’ve said all along that there will continue to be ferry service from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo to Tsawwassen, but fundamentally it’s a fair question to ask, do we need to continue to have two terminals in Nanaimo,” Stone told reporters Tuesday.

One of the options BC Ferries is considering is a passenger-only ferry that would replace the large car ferries that serve Nanaimo-Horseshoe Bay now.

Horseshoe Bay has congestion problems

on the water as well as on land, where vehicles line up along the highway before stacking up in a two-level “transfer deck” to board the ship.

That dock structure is due for replacement at an estimated cost of $200 million.

Horseshoe Bay terminal also serves the Sunshine Coast via Langdale and a third run to Bowen Island with smaller vessels. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan compares it to an airport with only one runway, with ferries lining up to a terminal that can only load and unload one at a time.

Jingle Boat Express sets sail with Santa

PRINCE RUPERT - Santa Claus may not be riding the rails in Prince Rupert this year, but a partnership between three organizations will give North Coast youth the chance to spend some one-on-one time with him on the high seas.

Northern Savings Credit Union, Success by Six and the Prince Rupert Port Authority are teaming up for the first-ever Jingle Boat Express, a one hour harbour tour with Santa Claus aboard the Inside Passage.

“In the three organizations taking over the event, we wanted to see if we could rebrand it and do something that would allow more children to have more access. We wanted to do the same type of event, but put a bit of a different spin on it,” said Northern Savings Credit Union branch manager Stefan Delloch, noting the increase in rail traffic created too much uncertainty about running the Jingle Bell Express again after it was cancelled last year.

“People can expect to have a fun, festive event for children and families. They’ll get to experience the wonder and beauty of the Prince Rupert harbour, which is not something everyone is able to do. We are really

excited we are able to put this type of event out to the benefit of the community at such a low cost so the most number of people can participate.”

One hundred tickets for each of the two scheduled trips will go on sale at 9 a.m. on Nov. 15 at Northern Savings Credit Union. The boat ride itself will depart at 10 a.m. and at noon on Dec. 11.

The other partners said bringing something back to Prince Rupert for children at Christmas time was an important undertaking, one they are glad to be involved in.

“We are just thrilled to see this wonderful event return to Prince Rupert. I know how excited my kids were for the Jingle Bell Express each year so it is such an honour to be able to work in partnership to carry on a greatly anticipated and much loved tradition,” said Success by Six coordinator Kate Toye.

“The Prince Rupert Port Authority is pleased to partner with local businesses and organizations to bring this popular seasonal family event back to Prince Rupert. Celebrating more than 15 years of putting smiles on kids’ faces in our community, we are happy to be a part of the Jingle Boat Express this year,” added Prince Rupert Port Authority community relations manager Maynard Angus.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed LNG Canada Export Terminal Project, Kitimat, B.C. Open House and Invitation to Comment LNG Canada Development Inc. (Proponent) is proposing to construct and operate a natural gas liquefaction facility and marine terminal for the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The proposed project is called the LNG Canada Export Terminal Project and will be located in the District of Kitimat, B.C. (proposed Project). TransCanada donates funds to Prince Rupert Minor Hockey

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association (PRMHA) has received a financial boost from TransCanada, a North American energy company based in Calgary.

Ten thousand dollars was donated to the PRMHA earlier in the year as TransCanada added its name to the list of PRMHA’s sponsors for the 2014-15 season. A new banner has been posted above the entrance way for Rampage games in its name.

“They’ve asked us to do as we see fit with the money in any way that can benefit the hockey season for everybody and so that’s what we’ve done,” said PRMHA vice-president Tanya Ostrom last week, adding that the money went towards purchasing the new Zamboni that is being used for the season after the civic centre’s 2008 model broke down repeatedly in the past.

“TransCanada was advised about [the need for a Zamboni] through a parent and then contacted PRMHA for more information. Even though the Zamboni was purchased before the donation was received, this did not hinder TransCanada from supporting minor hockey and the numerous ice users,” said Ostrom.

TransCanada is hopeful in its plans to build and operate a Prince Rupert Gas Transmission project with a 900-kilometre pipeline delivering natural gas from the District of Hudson’s Hope to the proposed facility on Lelu Island within the District of Port Edward.

Pacific NorthWest LNG installs equipment on buoy for mariners

PRINCE RUPERT - Mariners in Prince Rupert will be able to get realtime data from Agnew Bank follow-

ing the installation of an Automatic Information System (AIS) on the Ocean Data Acquisition System (ODAS) buoy, which has been in place since January.

Pacific NorthWest LNG installed the equipment in late October, which will now broadcast data such as wind speed and direction, air temperature, air pressure, tide level, surface current speed and direction and water temperature to any vessel equipped with an AIS receiver of the AIR mobile app.

“This data is helping Pacific NorthWest LNG learn more about the complex marine and weather environment on the North Coast. We are making use of the information to assist in the design of our marine terminal and to determine operating procedures for LNG carriers that would be calling on the facility.

It only makes sense to share this information with the wider marine community,” said Capt. David Kyle, head of marine services for Pacific NorthWest LNG, noting the data is being

Dispute’s end results in more funds for Port Ed

PORT EDWARD - The end of a dispute between the City of Prince Rupert and the Prince Rupert Port Authority has resulted in a windfall of sorts for the District of Port Edward.

As a result of the increased payment-in-lieu of tax (PILT) assessment, the district has received an additional $580,000 in unbudgeted revenue from the port authority that falls into two categories.

“The first part, $424,000, is our share of the tax revenue from Ridley Island. We get 17 per cent of the taxes, so when they paid the additional money to the city our portion was larger,” explained chief administrative officer Ron Bedard.

“The other $156,000 represents the additional PILT value of Lelu Island, which falls into Port Edward’s jurisdiction anyway.”

Prince Rupert Port Authority manager of corporate communications Michael Gurney noted there are six lots in Port Edward that the port pays PILT payments on, with Lelu Island being the largest. As with other undeveloped port properties, the valuation of the land changed when a review of the PILT values was undertaken.

“It appears to be a fair assessment and valuation and the PILT payments have been made to Port Edward,” Gurney said.

Bedard said the additional money will be put into general revenue and has not been earmarked for any particular purpose.

Legislation introduced to give Nisga’a Lisims Gov’t taxation powers on par with other governments VICTORIA - The provincial government has introduced legislation giving the Nisga’a Nation taxing authority on Nisga’a Lands, putting it on the level with other government bodies.

It will enable the Nisga’a Lisims Government to levy and collect property tax from Nisga’a persons and from other than Nisga’a citizens, including companies that operate industrial installations, such as LNG pipelines and associated infrastructure.

The legislation states the Nisga’a Nation will set residential property tax rates at the same rate as provincial rural areas. However, the Nisga’a Nation will have the ability to tax non-residential property at rates higher than the provincial rural rates.

Provincial aboriginal relations and reconciliation minister John Rustad noted the ability to collect property tax sets the stage “for a prosperous future for the

Nisga’a Nation, while respecting Nisga’a cultural and environmental values.”

The legislation follows on an agreement between the Nisga’a and the province signed this summer.

It is not exactly known when the legislation might pass in the legislature and when it might become officially the law.

Details include having the Nisga’a Nation become part of the North West Regional Hospital District, a taxing authority which collects money based on assessments for health care capital projects.

Typically, the North West Regional Hospital District provides 40 per cent of the money for major health care construction and facility maintenance projects in the region.

The Nisga’a Nation will appoint a representative to the regional hospital board, joining other municipalities and regional districts and

MITCHELL STEVENS forward money to the hospital district through property taxation.

And the taxation agreement will provide the means for the Nisga’a Nation to pay for services provided by the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District.

Regional district administrator Bob Marcellin said payments to support general regional district government services would be a prime example.

The Nisga’a could very well be included in 911 service run through the regional district, he said.

“It will also be a two

way street and Nisga’a Nation may provide a service back to the regional district like they currently do for refuse site service for the site they own and operate for the general valley population,” Marcellin added.

Nisga’a Lisims Government president Mitchell Stevens said it was still too early to indicate dollar values the property tax authority might generate.

“The taxes will be based on mill rates,” he said.

And tax revenues from projects such as pipelines won’t be known until if and when projects are constructed and their value is determined, Stevens added.

“This agreement is a long-standing obligation that was supposed to have come in 2000,” said Stevens of the year the Nisga’a Final Agreement was signed which set out Nisga’a self-government powers.

He expressed frustration at the pace of establishing the tax

authority when speaking at the last Nisga’a Nation biennial special assembly held in May, connecting the tax issue with pipeline development.

“I have gone on record to the federal government of Canada and the government of B.C. and said that we are absolutely not interested in your pipeline unless there is a facility on Nisga’a lands and unless you deal with the property tax—because that’s where the money is,” he said at the time.

PRINCE RUPERT Thanks to the Prince Rupert Harley Riders Club, there will be something under the tree for everyone once again this Christmas.

On the evening of Oct. 28, the club presented Capt. Gary Shiels of the Prince Rupert Salvation Army with a cheque for $10,000, along with 272 toys for the annual Christmas Hamper program.

The program provides families and children with gifts to open on Christmas morning, along with food for Christmas dinner.

Shiels said he expects the program will help out approximately 800 families and 1,400 children this holiday season, which is about the same as last year.

Prince Rupert Harley Riders Club president Chris Rose said he was happy with how much the event raised during his first year as president.

Royal BC Museum highlights objects from Haida Gwaii

PRINCE RUPERT - Curators, archivists and other experts from the Royal BC Museum (RBCM) agree that some of the most interesting objects in the province originated on Haida Gwaii.

The museum launched an online collection last month that features 100 of the most fascinating and seldom seen objects in the province, including at least eight from on the islands.

“Regardless of size or frame, each object has a compelling story and special connection to a place in British Columbia or a period in our history,” said the RBCM of the collection.

Several of Emily Carr’s paintings were selected to be part of the collection because they celebrate B.C.’s complex history and rich natural and cultural heritage, including one of her most popular works, Tanoo and Q.C.I. At five feet long, this monumental painting depicts the Haida village Tanu, located along the east coast of what is now Gwaii Haanas. Carr portrayed the longhouses and poles in oil and on canvas. At the time of her visit, around 1913, the village was uninhabited.

“In recognition of the immense cultural, political and historical impact of First Nations peoples on British Columbia, 24 of the objects are First Nations artifacts or artwork, both ceremonial and contemporary,” said the museum.

Four pieces of Haida artwork, created over the span of 100 years, are featured in the collection. Each is a different material: gold, silver, wood, or argillite, showcasing the breadth of Haida design.

A carved wooden plaque, which was once part of a headdress adorned with flicker feathers, sea lion whiskers and a train of ermine skins, stands alone as an object of interest.

It is attributed to Haida carver Simeon Sdiihldaa, who lived in Old Massett from 1799 to 1889.

An argillite chest carved by Charles Edenshaw sometime before 1920 is also included in the collection. The lid depicts the story of raven discovering humankind in a cockle shell, with raven transforming between his human and bird forms.

A small gold chest carved by Bill Reid is the only non-argillite

work to be included in the Royal BC Museum’s Haida argillite exhibit. This unique piece was created in 1971, combining a novel material with traditional Haida formline design.

Robert Davidson’s silver bracelet Happy Negative Spaces was created in 1980, “beautifully designed and executed“ and included in the collection because it is considered “one of his most important early abstract works”.

RBCM unmistakable, but the RBCM’s collection also contains astonishing items from land and sea that islanders may not recognize.

Bubblegum coral, which thrives in the Northeast Pacific, is a soft coral of ecological importance and slow growth that is considered the “old growth trees of the sea”. The specimen featured in the RBCM collection was harvested in 1991, just south of Moresby Island at a depth between 100 and 125 metres.

Ethnobotanist Nancy Turner donated her plant collections to the RBCM herbarium, which included a branch of common juniper (Juniperus communis L.) collected while she was on Haida Gwaii in

1970. This species of shrub can be found in boggy areas around the islands and has landed itself in the RBCM’s 100 Objects of Interest.

Finally, those scrolling through the collection can see a marvel of Haida Gwaii fauna that no one will ever see roaming the islands again.

“This taxidermy mount of a Dawson’s Caribou (Rangifer tarandus dawsoni) is one of only five specimens in the world. All are at the Royal BC Museum,” said the RBCM, noting three of the last four ever seen were shot in 1908.

Highway widening underway in Terrace

Work is continuing to construct a second lane and improved passage for pedestrians and cyclists on Keith Ave./Hwy 16 west across from Walmart.

TERRACE - The provincial transportation ministry is adding a second vehicle lane and a wider shoulder for pedestrians and cyclists on Hwy16, also known as Keith Ave., across from Walmart.

The work is on the north side of the road from Walmart stretching from the intersection east to the Dudley Little Bridge.

“The project involves extending the current westbound two lane section of Keith Ave. from Kerr St. to the Dudley Little Bridge,” said a statement from the transportation ministry.

The project is designed to “enhance safety” and will allow for better vehicle flow through at the intersection with Walmart and also “provide a widened and paved pedestrian/cyclist shoulder through the length of the project,” the statement continued.

The project is scheduled to finish the end of November at an estimated cost of $200,000.

Linda Paterson

Linda age 54, passed away on October 16, 2014 surrounded by family at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace.

She fought a courageous, and short battle with cancer. She will always be remembered for her infectious smile, gentle heart and kind spirit.

Her family would like to thank everyone who has generously provided heartwarming cards and words, flowers and food.

Everything has been greatly appreciated.

Ed Burnip It is with heavy hearts and wonderful memories that the family of Ed Burnip announce his death on October 29, 2014.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Ed will always be remembered as a generous, thoughtful and honourable man who had a dry sense of humour. He was a guiding force in his family and he leaves behind a legacy of a strong work ethic, integrity, the importance of family, unparalleled generosity and the traditions he kept alive and created after his wife, Jeanne, died.

Ed was born in Coleman, Alberta and moved with his family to Prince Rupert in1938 where he attended high school. After graduation he joined and served 2 years with the Air Force before entering the University of B.C. While finishing his degree in Mechanical Engineering he married his sweetheart, Jeanne Husoy, in 1951. After graduation he joined Alcan and moved to Arvida, Quebec where he and Jeanne started their family. They returned to BC in 1954 when Ed moved his family to Kitimat where he progressed through Alcan’s management ranks over the next 33 years until his retirement in 1985.

Ed will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his sons Arne (Patricia) & Denis (Gail), his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other extended family. He was respected by all and his absence will be keenly felt by those who knew him.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and a heartfelt thanks to his doctors and to all the staff at Terraceview Lodge who treated him with the compassion and respect he deserved At Ed’s request there will be no funeral service. Instead the family will gather next spring to say a final goodbye at one of Ed’s favorite places, his cabin on Shuswap Lake.

We rejoice that he lived; We took delight in his friendship We treasure that we shared in his life; We cherish our memories of him So it is with love that we leave him in peace And it is with the greatest of respect that we bid him farewell.

TERRACE - “Shames may be the only place where there are friends on a powder day,” writes Christopher Solomon in Outside magazine’s November issue. Featuring a flurry of familiar faces, Solomon’s piece is pure love for Shames Mountain, its backcountry, and the rest of what he calls “the big north”.

It’s one of several let’s-getstoked-on-northwest-B.C. articles expected this pre-season, including one in Air Canada’s En Route magazine that is even more focussed on the co-op aspect of the mountain’s operation, and is further indication that more eyes are on the area than ever before.

“Of course we hope it translates to more visits,” said Shames general manager Christian Theberge last week, on the media attention.

But “the heart of Shames will always remain its local clientele ...

Shames will grow with the growth of it’s local population. I would say that the amount of houses, and lots being built in Terrace is a much stronger indicator than the magazine coverage – though it surely won’t hurt.”

This latest article’s release coincided with the snow line’s slow creep down the mountain. As of Oct. 29 there were 10 centimetres of snow at the top chair with the snow line sitting around the 10th tower, according to Theberge.

He says that’s average for this time of year, and that, looking at the forecast models, his educated guess/ hope is “that we will get pounded with snow through November and beginning of December, switch to milder blue bird weather for holi-

days, then back to heavy snowfalls from mid January to mid March, then ending with fantastic sunny spring skiing.”

This summer was packed with projects at Shames – replacing the T-Bar cable, a major repair of the chairlift return station that saw the 3000-pound wheel removed, re-

paired, and then reinstalled.

“We could not have accomplished what we did without the help volunteers and the assistance of numerous businesses in town,” he said.

“The truth about Shames remains unchanged – the mountain can sustain itself operationally, but cannot afford to finance its necessary capital

infrastructure upgrades and repairs from operations alone.

“This is the co-op advantage at work,” he said, noting nearly $50,000 in savings. “Without this kind of help our only option would be to increase prices which would go against our founding principles of affordable, sustainable, and innovative.”

PRINCE GEORGE - Caledonia’s grade 10 Junior Girls volleyball team had a strong showing in Prince George two weekends ago, placing fifth out of 23 teams.

The Oct. 24 and 25 tournament started with a second place finish in pool play after beating DP Toff two games to one, losing two to one to the eventual tournament winner College Heights, and bouncing back to beat Fort St. James two to one.

This meant the team played Skeena Middle School in the next round, beating them two games to one and “unfortunately knocking Skeena into the consolation rounds of play,” wrote coach Adri MacKay in an email last week.

Caledonia then played Duchess Park, losing 2-1 in a very tightly contested match.

“With a win we would have made semi-finals, but the loss sent us to play for 5th and 6th against Dr. Kearney (Fort St. John),” MacKay said.

Terrace defeated this team in two games straight to take fifth place overall.

“Correina McNeice was chosen for recognition as our most consistent player of the tournament,” she said. “Some great volleyball was played over the two day event.”

KITIMAT - Six skaters from the Snow Valley Skating Club travelled to Prince George on October 3-5 for the Cariboo North Central High Performance Seminar. The Snow Valley Skating Club has a number of up and coming skaters and many were in the competitive group during the seminar.

PRINCE RUPERT - With the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre’s pool maintenance finally over with, the Prince Rupert Amateur Swim Club (PRASC) isn’t wasting any time getting back up to speed with the 2014-15 swimming schedule – one they’ve fallen behind on by a month with the pool’s closure.

“We’re going to ramp right back up to a full practice schedule right away,” said PRASC head coach Chris Street, noting that while formal assessments for registrants happened on Tuesday, registration for new members is always ongoing for the season.

“If people aren’t there for Tuesday, we’ll do the assessments as they come,” he added.

Among the expected returnees include Amy Leighton, who won nine medals at the 2014 North American Indigenous Games, and Avery Movold and Brandan Hagen, who both compet-

ed in the 2014 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships in Winnipeg.

Until now the team has been running dryland training drills which, while important, is hardly a comparable replacement to that much time away from the water, said Street.

“The dryland’s a substitute but it’s not a good substitute so we’re looking forward to getting back to work. We’ll do some freestyle [strokes] to start with,” he said.

The team won’t send a bus or the whole squad to an upcoming Prince George meet in three weeks, since not enough time has passed for them to train adequately, but Street mentioned there may be some athletes who choose to go on their own.

On Sunday morning, the Prince Rupert recreation department announced that the main pool and hot pool are ready but the tot pool will be closed “for a few extra days until a replacement part arrives”. PRASC’s first meet as a team will be in Kitimat in December.

Lt. Governor joins call to adopt

VICTORIA - Lt. Governor Judith Guichon is sharing her own experience as an adoptive parent to encourage people to invite the 1,000 young people waiting to join a family in B.C. At an event at the B.C. legislature to declare November Adoption Month, Guichon described her experience adopting four children to live at her Nicola Valley ranch starting in the late 1970s.

The first two children were infants, and in 1989 a relative called and asked if Guichon and her first husband would add a brother and sister who were then aged three and five. Their mother had two older twin boys and was “struggling on her own.

“Having always wanted a large family and having lots of resources such as wide open spaces to offer, we didn’t hesitate to say yes,” Guichon said. “I know that we gave these children a great home, and as a mother I worked to take care of them.

“What I never knew is how much they would take care of me. You see,

when my children were 20, 16, 15 and 13, we lost their father in an accident.

“For a short time after the accident, we were all in survival mode. To say that I would not have endured without my children is not overstating the case.”

Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux and Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond issued a joint statement, noting that 1,300 adoption placements have been found in the past five years. But there are 1,000 more children and teens who are still waiting.

“The reality is that many of the young people in carre who are waiting for adoption are school age,” they said. “They may be siblings who need to stay together. Some may have special placement needs due to difficult early childhood experiences, prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs, learning delays or other developmental challenges.”

Cadieux launched a social media campaign for November to promote adoption, including a website at www.1000familiesbc.com with adoptive family profiles and videos.

Funding provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada–British Columbia Job Fund
